“One of the thing that surprised me is how much Illumina is like a tech company,” deSouza says. “I was expecting to see similarities to other healthcare companies I had known. But the biggest surprise is Illumina really is run like a tech company.” How? Discussions are fast, executives think like engineers and the focus is on rapid, incremental innovation, things that are not usually possible in healthcare thanks to regulation and the vagaries of biology.
