The extended family
So you may say that there is not one single "Romanov" in this photograph...but it is possible to identify at least a full-blooded one (the daughter of an Emperor no less) and the others are very important characters in the story of the dynasty.
From left to right, standing:
Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia (Duchess of Edinburgh then Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, married to Queen Victoria's second son Albert).
The little girl next to her is her youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice of Edinburg first, then of Saxe Coburg and Gotha (she was quite in love with Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich at one point, but they were first cousins and could not marry, later she married into the Spanish nobility.)
Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse (brother of Tsarina Alexandra and future husband to Grand Duchess Maria's second daughter, Victoria Melita (I don't think they were married at this point although I could be wrong).
A very young Ferdinand, Crowned Prince of Romania (probably not married to Marie yet, but I am not sure);
Victoria Melita, Princess of Edinburgh, later Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, second daughter of Grand Duchess Maria
The future George V (this was the man that Marie's father Alfred dreamed of his daughter marrying but his wife opposed the idea. George himself was very amenable.
From left to right, sitting
Young Alfred, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, son of Grand Duchess Maria and of Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (second son of Queen Victoria).
The third daughter of Maria and Alfred, Alexandra, Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha
Alfred, Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha, second son of Queen Victoria.
A very young Marie, Crowned Princess of Romania (or very nearly so)

Queen Victoria and family at Coburg on 21 April 1894, assembled for the wedding of Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1876-1936) and Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse (1868-1937), both grandchildren of Queen Victoria. The wedding took place on 19 April 1894.
The group includes members of the Prussian and Russian royal families. This photograph was acquired by Queen Victoria to be part of her series of albums titled 'Portraits of Royal Children'. She is surrounded by descendants from across Europe, assembled for the wedding of Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (the daughter of Queen Victoria's son, Alfred) and the Grand Duke of Hesse (the son of Queen Victoria's daughter, Alice). Sitting the with the Queen is her eldest daughter Victoria, now Dowager Empress of Germany, with her eldest son, Kaiser Wilhelm II. The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia are also in the group. Nicholas and Princess Alexandra of Hesse, standing next to him, had announced their engagement on 20 April 1894.
The photograph represents Queen Victoria's position as the 'grandmother' of Europe, at the moment before family alliances began to collapse and Europe eventually erupted into war in 1914. Queen Victoria wrote in her journal for 21 April 1894, 'the whole of our large family party were photographed by English, as well as German photographers. Many groups were taken, & some of me with Vicky & my 3 sons, & William.'

The children of the Duke and Duchess of Edinbrough - (left to right) Victoria (‘Ducky’), Alexandra (‘Baby’/later ‘Sandra’), Alfred and Marie (‘Missy’), 1879
“My little Darlings!
Mama is very well and sends you many kisses. We have most beautiful weather, all this week and even very hot, we had breakfast and luncheon in the gardens and had long drives. Yesterday, Monday afternoon it rained a little and today it is grey, but I think it will clear. I am so pleased you are all so good and that you have also some fine weather at last. Uncles Serge and Paul have arrived. Uncle Serge has brought some nice little toys for you and asks much about you and especially Ducky, whom he calls his great friend. He has brought some nice little wooden toys for you all.
Mama has good news from Papa who has shot many fine stags. He will soon come back here! Grandmama is pretty well she enjoyed so much the fine warm weather. I hope you don’t tease darling baby. Has she any new teeth? Have you good appetites and do you still get good fruit? I send Nana [Annie Pitcaithley] some Bulgarian postmarks. I have not yet received your new photographs. Now my darlings, good-bye. Many Kisses from
your own Mama.
Gran Papa has arrived at Livadia. Has Nana good news from her little girls?”
- Marie, Duchess of Edinburgh to her children, 9th September 1879

Queen Victoria’s Descendants (LIVING DESCENDANTS ONLY)
If you see any mistakes or can offer info on something like “Child 1” or an unknown birth or death year, please let me know. The only non-living descendants I kept on this list were her children
Key
Bold names=Queen Victoria’s children
* Descendants are already listed elsewhere on this list or the ones who would follow said person Examples:  Mark Nicholas van Eyck should be followed by  Princess Dorothea of Hesse but she and her descendants are also descended elsewhere. Another examples are Queen Elizabeth II & The Duke of Edinburgh’s descendants and the descendants of Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg und Gotha and  Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten
** I’ve seen reports that she died in 2002, but no obituary. Any ideas?
Bold and Italics together on one name denotes this person is presently the eldest and longest lived person of Queen Victoria (The Duke of Edinburgh)

ALFRED
Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha
(born 1844 - died 1900)
Tumblr media
pictured above is a portrait of the Prince of the United Kingdom, by Franz Xaver Winterhalter from 1865
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
SERIES - On this day July Edition: Alfred died on 30 July 1900.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
ALFRED ERNEST ALBERT was born in 1844, at Windsor Castle. He was the second son of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom, and thus he was a member of the British brach of the HOUSE OF SAXE-COBURG AND GOTHA.
From birth he was a PRINCE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM and for almost 20 years he was the second-in-line to the British throne, passing to third in the line of succession after the birth of his nephew Prince Albert Victor of Wales in 1864.
By 1866 his mother created him DUKE OF EDINBURGH, EARL OF ULSTER and EARL OF KENT.
In 1874 he married MARIYA, a Grand Duchess of Russia, the only daughter of Alyeksandr II, Emperor of all the Russias and Mariya Alyeksandrovna. They had six children (check the list on the post about his Royal Wedding).
Having served in the Royal Navy since a young age he traveled and lived throughout the British Empire and achieved the rank of ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET in 1893.
That same year his uncle Ernst II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha died and he succeeded as DUKE OF SAXE-COBURG AND GOTHA, because his father was already dead and his older brother Albert Edward, Prince of Wales had renounced his rights of succession in 1863.
His only surviving son Alfred, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha died in 1899, aged 24.
Over a year later, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha also died of throat cancer aged 55, on 30 July 1900 at Schloss Rosenau in the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
As he did not have any other sons his British titles reverted to the Crown. And in the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha he was succeeded by his nephew Charles Edward, Duke of Albany, who during World War I was excluded from the British line of succession to do his German connections.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
Check my posts on ALFRED's wife and their Royal Wedding!
His wife was Mariya Alyeksandrovna, a Grand Duchess of Russia from her birth in 1853.
He married her in 1874.

On This Day In History . 23rd January 1874 . Prince Alfred married Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. . . ◼ Alfred reigned as Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha from 1893 to 1900. He was the second son & fourth child of Queen Victoria & Prince Albert. He was known as the Duke of Edinburgh from 1866 until he succeeded his paternal uncle Ernest II as the reigning Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in the German Empire. . ◼ On 23 January 1874, he married the Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, the second (& only surviving) daughter of Emperor Alexander II of Russia & his wife Marie of Hesse & by Rhine, daughter of Ludwig II, Grand Duke of Hesse & by Rhine & Wilhelmine of Baden, at the Winter Palace, St Petersburg. . ◼ To commemorate the occasion, a small English bakery made the now-internationally-popular Marie biscuit, with the Duchess' name imprinted on its top. The Duke & Duchess of Edinburgh made their public entry into London on 12 March. . ◼ The marriage, however, was not a happy one. She was surprised to discover that she had to yield precedence to the Princess of Wales & all of Queen Victoria's daughters & insisted on taking precedence before the Princess of Wales (the future Queen Alexandra) because she & her father the Tsar considered the Princess of Wales' family (the Danish Royal Family) as inferior to their own. . ◼ Queen Victoria refused this demand, yet granted her precedence immediately after the Princess of Wales. Her father gave her the then-staggering sum of £100,000 as a dowry, plus an annual allowance of £28,000. . ◼ They had five children; Alfred, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; Marie, Queen of Romania; Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, later Grand Duchess Victoria Feodorovna of Russia; Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; & Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #D23Jan #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1874 #RoyalWedding #PrinceAlfred #GrandDuchess #MariaAlexandrovna #TheWinterPalace #stpetersburg #Russia #Historic #Wedding #Weddings #Duke #Duchess #weddingday #HouseofSaxeCoburgandGotha #RoyalFamily #BritishMonarchy #History #saintpetersburg #WinterPalace (at Saint Petersburg, Russia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs_lNKaFGN1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gsvt6vtinq4x

Alfred, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Alfred Alexander William Ernest Albert; 15 October 1874 – 6 February 1899), was the only son and heir apparent of Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He died aged 24 under circumstances still not entirely clear. He was a first cousin of George V of the United Kingdom, Wilhelm II of Germany and Nicholas II of Russia.
