A wearable electrical nerve stimulation device can provide relief to people experiencing the persistent pain and fatigue linked to long COVID, a study co-led by UCLA and Baylor College of Medicine researchers suggests.

Long-COVID, a complex and lingering condition following COVID-19 recovery, affects approximately 1 in 13 adults in the U.S. Symptoms such as widespread pain, fatigue, and muscle weakness often continue to disrupt daily activities, including walking and basic tasks.

The study, published in the peer-reviewed Scientific Reports, focused on a wearable Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) device, which uses low-voltage electrical currents to reduce pain, fatigue, and mobility issues associated with long-COVID.

The project was co-led by Dr. Bijan Najafi, research director of the Center for Advanced Surgical & Interventional Technology at UCLA Health and co-director of NSF IUCRC Center to Stream HealthCare in Place (C2SHIP), who said the device could have wider applications.

"While this study focused on managing pain and fatigue caused by long COVID, it may also have potential applications for addressing similar symptoms in individuals with other respiratory diseases, those who have experienced extended ICU stays and developed post-hospitalization weaknesses, and conditions involving chronic fatigue and pain, such as fibromyalgia or chemotherapy-related side effects," Najafi said. "But further studies are needed to confirm these potential uses."

In the study, 25 participants with chronic musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and gait difficulties were assigned either a high-dose (active) TENS device or a low-dose (placebo) device. Both groups used the TENS device for three to five hours daily over a four-week period.

Researchers measured participants' pain levels, fatigue, and walking performance before and after the therapy period. Findings indicated that the high-dose TENS group experienced notable improvements in pain relief (26.1% more relief compared to placebo) and walking ability (8% during fast walking), suggesting that wearable TENS therapy may help reduce long-COVID's impact on daily life.

The high-dose TENS group also reported a slightly higher perceived benefit (71.2%) compared to the low-dose group (61.4%), underscoring the potential of wearable TENS technology to support long-COVID recovery.

One factor in the study's success was likely the high rate of daily device usage, Najafi said. The wearable nature of the TENS device allowed participants to use it seamlessly throughout the day, without disrupting their routines.

"This wearable TENS system offered immediate, on-demand relief from pain and fatigue, making it easy to integrate into daily activities," Najafi said.

He also cautioned that more research is needed. "This study provides some hope for finding an effective, non-invasive solution for managing lingering COVID-19 symptoms that continue to affect millions," he said. "But our sample size was limited, so further research is needed to confirm these findings."

A: no, the team working on the site has doubled over the past two years and everyone is working hard to revive not just the brand but the site itself. these teams' commitment to both neopets,com and spinoff projects and merchandise for brand relevance is described as "unwavering"

Q: why are they making money with nc releases but not improving the site?

A: there are different teams working on engineering, improvements, and nc releases simultaneously. the engineering and improvement team is much larger than the team working on nc, it's just less visible to players than new items because it's "wizard behind the curtain" changes (they described it as fixing issues on an older tech stack). every dollar they make goes back into neopets in some form, including events, collaborations, and further development. the company is still at a loss but it's not as dire as it used to be two years ago (which is a great improvement, NC discourse aside).

the air purifier advice please 🙏

hello!!!!! yes, i will info dump some of the things i come across at work everyday, hopefully it helps!

Quick overview on how air purifiers work: ok so purifiers don't "kill" bacteria/particles which is a lot of the marketing you'll see, air purifiers take in air, filter out particles, and push out clean air back into your home so you don't breathe in the dangerous particles: it's all about airflow (created with a strong motor) and filter type

ONLY trust HEPA and activated carbon filters. every other "technology" out there is not sound, there's no definitive research that proves the effectiveness of any other tech on the market. at best it's ineffective, at worst it's dangerous, i wouldn't trust any of it. some common types of technologies to avoid: ozone generators, ionizers, uv light, when a company has their own "patented tech" that isn't HEPA or carbon

HEPA: this targets airborne particles. dust, pet dander, mold spores, pollen, smoke particles

ACTIVATED CARBON: this targets gasses, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), odors, smoke odors

Try to find a purifier that's going to cover a lot of your home or at least an entire room - they're portable so I suggest moving them around during the day if you can and bringing them into your bedroom at night.

Finding a purifier that covers your home/room: suggested air changes per hour (ACH) is 4.8 - many companies will list 1 ACH for their square foot coverage to make it seem like it can cover a lot, and it's just not true. Companies SHOULD be sharing their clean air delivery rate (CADR) information that is connected to ENERGY STAR and is tested by the regulatory agency so they cannot fudge their numbers, if they don't share this information it's a red flag

Check CADR and square foot coverage at 4.8 ACH for a product HERE

For example: an air purifier that can clean 1,000 sq ft in 60 minutes with 1 ACH, can clean 500 sq ft in 30 minutes with 2 ACH, and 80 sq ft in 12.5 minutes with 4.8 ACH (it's confusing, i know, but it's important to have a purifier(s) strong enough to clean your indoor space)

Air quality sensors built into purifiers are cheap, i don't trust them to accurately portray your indoor air quality readings, also the apps are...awful: the markets been flooded with smart purifiers it's tough to find one that DOESN'T have an app attached to it. there's nothing wrong with a smart purifier, its up to the user, but its that they can up the price with the add-ons that don't help the main goal of your purifier: clean your indoor air and create healthy indoor air quality in your home

Cross ventilation helps, open those windows!!! air out your home!!! but don't open them on high pollen count or bad air quality days or if you're located near high pollution or close to an active wildfire or smoke. you can check US location air quality HERE ALSO, don't run your air purifiers while you have the windows open. they'll try to clean the outside airflow too, rendering it pretty ineffective.

Look for certifications!!! ENERGY STAR, AHAM, CARB, INTERTEK - these are independent safety and performance certifications that companies have to go through a testing process to receive them, it's not just marketing these are regulations and are standard - if a company doesn't share these results or aren't certified MAJOR red flag

Run those purifiers 24/7!!!!! If they're ENERGY STAR certified (they should be, look for the logo!!) it shouldn't affect your energy bill in a significant way

Just because a purifier costs more doesn't mean it performs better!! just focus on the air cleaning ability: the thing a purifier IS MEANT TO DO: and try to forget about the rest

Unfortunately, a good purifier is always going to be a bit of an investment. the mini purifiers out there and the wearable ones just do not do anything, i wish they did, but filters need surface area to be effective, they're too small, and the motor isn't efficient.

1. The First Drama I Watched

The Hope

Nothing can be better than a Zhang Ruoyun drama to start the year with. One of the best High School shows I've seen in the recent years, it had an amazing balance of explosive emotions of youth and jaded realism. It would appeal to viewers of all age ranges and I felt so so much nostalgia and relatability from beginning to the end. It was funny, it was smart, it was beautifully acted down to every minor role. (I pretend that last 30 minutes didn't happen, though)

2. Actors I Newly Discovered

Wang Qiang (as Li Ran from The Hope), Zheng Hehuizi as Yang Caiwei from In Blossom)

LOOK at that babie😭🥺. Don't you want to pinch his cheeks? One of the most darling characters I had pleasure of watching recently, I wish a bright, bright future career for Wang Qiang. He portrayed the classic outwardly-prickly, marshmallow-inside teenager archetype with amazing nuance.

And Yang Caiwei oh Yang Caiwei.... as one of the shows and characters that created quite the buzz recently, I don't have anything more to add to the discussion. I can only say: lady, thank you for taking up a role that is FINALLY convincingly scarred, unkempt, dirty and not strikingly goddess-y from the first glance, and playing her with such gusto the true, genuine beauty of the character was drawn out with no external effort at all.

3. BGM I Fell in Love With

The Hope

This drama utilized music so beautifully than 99% idol romance dramas ever would. Atmospheric music that elevated the scenes with lyrics that fit, not to mention writing three whole songs to be FULLY performed in-drama for character purposes. It felt like a musical at times. Talk about dedication.

4. Best Wardrobe

Pan Yue's, from In Blossom, Legend of Shen Li (Only few)

I mean

How many costume drama wardrobes can top these embroidery and visibly high quality fabric? Not to mention they actually look wearable in daily life, and not just ornate for "main character's costumes" reasons. They are actually quite simple, if you think a bit- but immensely tasteful. AND

My FAVORITE thing about not just his, but all costumes in this show that I've rarely seen other dramas do is: They repeated the costumes! Many times! Almost all of them! And that added so much to the groundedness of the character. Rich young master having a runway-worthy wardrobe? Nothing new. Him wearing them again and again because that's what a normal, reasonable person does? I'm sold.

I loved the plain but in an elegant and carefree way styling of the two leads of Shen Li whenever they were having recluse times. *This* is exactly how I imagine immortals too- just vibing and not decked in gold from head-to-toe because they are simply beyond it. Whenever the show changed to the typical bejewelled guzhuang garb in heaven scenes, it immeadietely visually reduced the show to just another xianxia. First Till the End of the Moon and now this😭. Guys, pick a consistent style and rock it proudly! A signature look is very important especially if you are aiming to create an impactful all-powerful character! I see no reason the gods couldn't do all the grand court and fight scenes in these robes either, honestly that would've served drive home the nail that the gods function on a different wavelength than humans.

(Also Wtf was even that Shen Li in a Greek goddess like getup? [last image] Not that it's not pretty BUT *waves hands around helplessly..)

In Blossom posters had a perfect balance of traditional Chinese ethereal elegance mixed with gothic horror mystery vibes.

I LOVED the "how I imagine the peaceful cottagecore fairytale like life of my great-grandparents" vibe of Shen Li posters. It's giving lore.

Really liked the "hooligan teens on retro album cover" aesthetic of The Hope posters too.

The whimsical food posters of Baking Challenge were also fun.

I didn't even know a Detective Chinatown S2 was even coming like...until it did and it was like a second new year because I LOVED that show and it was the most unexpected pleasant surprise of the year- especially when almost all the main cast members were returning. And the first few eps were amazing too and didn't do a disservice at all to the previous season and I got my hopes up thinking we'll get to see a continuation of the Roy Chiu-Janine Chang arc too... only for the show to pull the rug and did the exact same thing as the previous season- the main character withdrew from the story by midpoint. Oh my gods. I want to find this show's creators and give them a good shake. Have some Janine jiejie pics from first season though just for the nostalgia's sake.

As promised, here is the second part of our Born This Way Ball fashion series! Make sure to read the first part as well.

The white patent cage “Bad Romance” dress as well as the jackets worn by the dancers (in my opinion one of the top 3 most notorious TBTWBT costumes) are fruits of cooperation of the London fashion house Void of Course and Gaga’s stylist Brandon Maxwell. 

The white leather mask with ram horns and sharp cheekbones was created by Cecilio Castrillo.

During her show in Melbourne on June 27, Gaga debuted a brand new costume.

The bespoke electric blue cape jacket with sculpted short sleeves and matching mini skirt ensemble were custom made for her, and belong to the Void of Course for TBTWBT collection!

The matching blue perspex crown with metallic golden prongs was custom-made by Tentacle Studio.

Gaga kicked off the Latin American leg of tour in Mexico City, where she performed at the sports and concerts venue Foro Sol in front of more than 40,000 people, where Gaga debuted a new costume for her “Judas” performance.

The embroidered silk bustier dress with exaggerated sculpted hips was custom-made by Christian Lacroix, based on a Haus of Gaga design and a selection of archive pieces hand-picked by Sacha Walckhoff, the creative director of the French fashion house.

Now, “Fashion of his Love”. The first look was this custom Versace body-hugging one-shoulder wet-look gown with side peek-a-boo detail and ultra high side slit. 

In other photos, we can see her wearing matching thigh-high platform boots made by Armani Privé for her.

Next, a bespoke Perry Meek sleeveless red tuxedo dress with notched lapel, architectural exaggerated shoulders and tapered cape-like back.

Gaga said it’s been her life’s dream to be dressed in Italian designers and she has collaborated on her TBTWBT costumes with some of today’s biggest Italian designers. 

Heart Attack look, the purple flounced taffeta cape with bow detail and giant heart shaped helmet is based on the Moschino Fall/Winter 2012 collection.

The winged solid black statement sunnies with dark grey lenses are the Rana from ksubi’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

The most popular “Fashion of his Love” costume comprises a custom Christian Dada pink origami crane dress featuring deep V-neck and column skirt, matching straw hat, sunglasses and custom Moschino cape made entirely of pink marabou powder puffs.

When I asked Christian about this satin pink dress with foldable skirt, he said: “The origami crane has long been a symbol of healing in the Japanese culture, a symbol Japanese people always put feelings and prayers into. I’ve made it with ‘the reality of Japan’ and ‘hope for the future’ in mind”.

There are about 120 hours of work behind this bespoke wearable piece of art.

Right now, the thing I'm most lacking in is expression. For the sake of winning my next competition, I have to learn everything I can, and master it.

I've been figure skating since I was little. My training is very strict, but when I think about seeing all my efforts come to fruition in the end, I don't feel tired at all.

Whenever I hit a setback, you're always there for me. If I imagine what it'd be like without you, I feel fear from the bottom of my heart. I'm really lucky to have met you.

The people who see my performances often feel something, and sometimes they'll tell me how they felt. This has always made me happy to hear, ever since I started figure skating, but until recently I haven't been able to express that happiness in words.

The skating rink is a huge mirror. A merciless mirror, that reflects the true skill of the athletes atop it. That's why effort is indispensable, if I want to like the me in the mirror.
