Costa Rica: Day Seven. More Rain, And A Change Of Plans At The Arenal Observatory Lodge
One of the main reasons for  my stay  at the Arenal Observatory Lodge in Costa Rica was the many hiking trails that were accessible from the lodge. I would be able to  explore the surrounding gardens, ranch lands and rainforest  whenever I wanted, without relying on transportation. This certainly was helpful with all the rain we had during my stay. I did however want to  visit the nearby Arenal…

Around the Arenal - Hanging Bridges, Volcano, and Waterfall
Around the Arenal – Hanging Bridges, Volcano, and Waterfall
The pick up for my first guided tour in La Fortuna was at 7:20 and I was the first on the bus. Next up was Judith, the girl I had met on the bus the day before, and then a Brazilian couple from São Paulo called Isabella and Felipe. The four of us would spend the day together with Jason Torres, our guide from Desafio. We started our Arenal combo tour by going to Mistico, the Hanging Bridges Park.…

Guanabana Gang
On Friday morning, our chauffeur Stacia transported us to La Fortuna. As we approached where we thought our Airbnb was, we lost service. The directions were not at all clear, and our hanger won out, so we quit and went for lunch at the first place we saw.
Tumblr media
It turned out to be everything we needed: fresh dragonfruit, maracuya, and guanabana juice accompanied by fresh ceviche, garlic shrimp, and wait for it…more fish. We hopped on the wifi, downloaded the map, and successfully found our Airbnb!
Tumblr media
After checking in, we went to the Don Olivio chocolate tour. Immediately upon arrival, we were greeted with bananas, papaya, and chocolate fudge. To say the least, we were already into it. We took a quick look at the surrounding fruit trees and saw a two-toed sloth named Maria munchin’ on some hibiscus leaves.
We saw pink bananas AKA bird food, green-rinded oranges, guanabana, and cacao, and we took shots of sugar cane rum. Our guide cracked open the cacao and gave us each a bean covered in a sweet mango-flavored coating. At the end of the tour, we sat down and somehow consumed hot chocolate and pure hot coffee with a bit of fresh vanilla extract.
Tumblr media
On our way back from the tour, we stopped at a local grocery store where we got some local coffee and an assortment of road trip snacks including ceviche-flavored plantain chips, which we ate for dinner because we were too pooped to go out.
The next morning, we had some of that 100% Arabica coffee, and Stacia & Jess were twitching, but it helped us get on the road by 7 am! Less than an hour later with a few bumps along the way, we were at Arenal River canyon for our canyoneering/zip-lining adventure.
Tumblr media
We did 4 repels through waterfalls, 2 zip-lines, and 3 jumps into the water. Stacia was the most scared with me at a close second but only for the free-jumps. Frances took everything like a champ. Our lunch was included at the Mistico Hanging Bridges Park where we got a spectacular view of the Arenal volcano, saw an anteater, and got a huge plate of Costa Rican almuerzo.
Tumblr media
Back at the BnB, we relaxed by reading in the hammock before getting dressed up and listening to our old college playlists. We hit up downtown La Fortuna and got two excellent tangerine ceviches because what is a meal in Costa Rica without ceviche?? We then got a drink at Lava Lounge, where we listened to some sub-par live reggae and hung out with a pregnant cat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next morning, we all woke up at our leisure and went to Mirador El Silencio for our morning rainforest hike, which included a trail with a great view of Arenal along volcanic rocks. We said “¡buenas!” to a few cows on our way out and then headed to the Ecotermales Hot Springs.
Tumblr media
This is Arenal’s only truly natural hot springs, and it felt like paradise. We ate a wonderful buffet of fresh food and Stacia announced “I’ve never been happier in my life” as she held the bare chicken in her hands.
It was a little hot outside to be jumping from hot pool to hot pool but luckily we found a cooler spot and some shade. We left feeling completely relaxed.
Tumblr media
For dinner, we went to La Street where Stacia and Frances split a huge taco platter, and I got fish with hearts of palm and mashed potatoes with a gooseberry on top. We ate until we could eat no more, and then we walked it off. Frances dove into a hearts of palm rabbit hole and learned that we should avoid single-stemmed hearts of palm.

Tommorrow my travel partner in crime (alittle to literally) leaves to go back to NZ. From hiking volcanoes in Guetamala, fighting pirates around Nicaragua, magriattas in Costa Rica, flashing divers in Utila, alligator in the canal, broken boat parts, noodle soup, cake, 36 days at sea, equator crossings, chore charts and not being able to speak any French or spainish, I will miss you heaps. Beyond thankful you were crazy enough to join me on this 5500nm adventure and I wish you the best with your new partner, may he be as badass as me 😉😘

Visiting Irazu Volcano- the highest volcano in Costa Rica
Irazu Volcano reaches over 11,000 feet above sea level. You can book a tour to visit it or go on your own. It’s about 1.5 hour drive from San José and is located in the Cartago Province. It is about an hour away from another active volcano, Turrialba. (You can read about my visit to Turrialba here) If you want to go on your own so you can explore at your own pace, you just need to purchase your…

Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Garden
We left the coffee farm and drove up to 7500 feet to the Poas Volcano. Before Max let us out of the van he warned us about the sulfur gas that was in the air around the crater. He didn’t recommend spending more than 30 minutes near the crater because of the gas which gave me expectations of the volcano we had hiked up in El Salvador with the dog. It was a short and shaded walk up to the crater viewpoint but we were all coughing on the way up as the sulfur caught in our throats. It was a good temperature at the top, with a beautiful view over the bright turquoise coloured crater and a lot of space to take photos. I had Max take some photos of me since he said he knew the best angles to do that since he took them daily. I walked up a smaller path which took me out to the laguna, it was steeper so a bit tougher than the initial walk up but was still nice because it was through a cloud forest. There weren’t any clouds, but a lot of moss and the sulfur smell has dissipated here too. I headed down to the gift shop and ordered a coffee, they were a bit rude to me when I ordered since I wanted a small strong coffee but then they handed me a large milky cappuccino. I asked them to remake it since it had cost me $4 and not what I ordered/wanted. They begrudgingly did so and scalded the milk for me too. I’m starting to appreciate that this is the last day of my trip and getting away from Costa Rica where people seem to see tourists as dollar signs and don’t really care about customer service. At least in the USA the service people are friendly to your face as a customer. After the volcano, we stopped by some random souvenir shop to try Max’s mate’s homemade cheese which had a weird gummy texture that I was not a fan of at all. I did buy some coconut cookies that Max said were a local treat and they looked decent. We drove the continental divide which had the dry forest and Pacific Ocean to one side and the rainforest and the Caribbean to the other. Along the way we passed loads of pineapple farms and Max told us that Costa Rica produces 40% of the world's pineapple supply.
Our next stop was the La Paz Waterfall Garden where we started off in the aviary to see some macau and toucans, and loads of butterflies. There were some sleeping sloths in a tree in the next area and then we entered the snake house. It was fascinating to see all the different kinds of snakes that live around here…although a little scary! We had a buffet lunch where I went for pork, salad, fries, vegetables, garlic bread and some fruit for dessert. After lunch we walked the waterfall path with our umbrellas from Max. We’d picked up another couple in the afternoon that were joining us only for the waterfall portion and they were really annoying because they kept lagging behind the group, so we’d all be ready to go and they’d be nowhere to be found so everyone had to stand around waiting for them to show up. Myself, the American couple, and the poncy British guy reached the end of the waterfall path first so we all sat down at the one table together and awkwardly chatted. The British guy had been insufferable the entire day, but insufferable in the way that it was entertaining to listen to his constant moaning and bragging and laugh internally at him. In this particular discussion at the end of the day he was saying how low the wages were in Costa Rica. He gave the example of a lawyer and said “they’d earn about $4500 a month and oh, you can’t live on that!” which someone would say if they were staying in an expensive Marriott suite and flew business class to get here (both true of him – I know because he loved bragging). Then he hit with the “cleaners here, $500 a month for full time work, I pay my cleaner that for 4 hours a week in London.” When we finally dropped him off back at the Marriott, the two ladies from New York were commenting how nice it was and he quipped “oh yeah it’s alright. I stayed here 25 years ago and I’ve stayed there ever since. It gets the job done.” But at last he was out of the van and swaggering over the front desk to get his boots licked by the concierge. Once we reached San Jose, it was just me and the other American guy who I’d worked out was autistic, or has some kind of stutter or speech impediment because he was not able to speak. He hopped out and dumped a handful of change into Max’s cup holder as a tip. I was the last one out and got dropped off around sunset, I made sure to give Max a good tip because he had worked really hard for us today, driving and guiding and didn’t pressure us into buying anything for his kickbacks. He was quite possibly the best guide of all the Central America trips I had done, and he’d done the whole day repeating everything he said in Spanish and English – the girl from Mexico didn’t really speak English so he translated his whole English tour into Spanish for her.

🏞️ - don’t go chasing waterfalls • closed starter for @xjaylahopkins
As much fun as the resort was and the activities they had offered seemed like a good time, it was hard to convince Chloe to stay on the grounds when they were near some of the most beautiful places. While travel was nothing new to her, there was something so special about being in Costa Rica, she’d never get over it. Her favorite part about this whole vacation, though, had to be dragging someone along on an adventure for the day. And the first person she happened to see on this particular day was a familiar face and she grinned in excitement as she called out to her. “Jayla!” Weaving through the crowd, she immediately made her way to the woman’s side. “Any chance I can convince you to go to a waterfall with me? There’s a tour that takes you to the base of a local volcano and it says it has a waterfall near it! And just imagine the beautiful views we’d get from the small hike to get there!”
