Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction:

The widespread use of technology has brought in a gigantic transformation in the field of medical sciences and healthcare. Technology has even made it possible for doctors to treat their patients in a virtual environment. The many inceptions that took birth in the surgical field have supplemented to the benefits of the patients. One such origination that constituted to the knee related surgeries is the Arthroscopic Surgery. The knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique, that allows orthopedic surgeons to assess the injury (joint) and repair any injuries without needing to fully open the joint.

What Happens During The Surgery?

Arthroscopic ACL surgery aims at restoring the functional stability of the knee while retaining the full range of movement. After inserting a special camera (known as an arthroscope) through the hole/incisions made, the surgeon can see and assess the extent of the damage. Then, special tools (such as scissors or lasers) are inserted through the other hole and used to repair/remove and replace the damaged ACL.  

Graft:

Once the doctor removes your torn ACL, he puts a tendon (Tendons connect muscle to bone) in its place. He may take a tendon from elsewhere in your body (like your knee, hamstring, or thigh) during surgery. Or he may use one from a deceased donor as well. Both types work well. When the tendon is placed within your knee, it’s known as a graft.

The doctor will place the graft at the right spot, and he’ll drill two holes, called “tunnels”, one in the bone above your knee and another in the bone below it. Then, he’ll place screws in the tunnels and anchor the graft in place. It serves as a sort of bridge that a new ligament will grow on as you heal. It can take many months for a new ACL to grow in fully.

Allografts.

Advantages of Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction: Better surgical methods and rehabilitation lead to return to work soon and return to activities and sports within 4 to 6 months. Sports such as soccer, basketball, and football, may, however, require up to 9 to 12 months of rehabilitation.

Most people will have a stable knee that does not give way after ACL reconstruction.

Less pain and stiffness after surgery.

Navigation Joint Surgeon:

Navigation Joint Surgeon uses special instruments which are attached to the patients. Using the surgical navigation system (camera), the location and the movement of the patient’s knee/hip is tracked and navigated throughout the surgery. The system provides a feedback of the instrument location which is particularly useful in situations especially in minimally invasive surgeries where the surgeon cannot see the tip of the instrument.
