- Without really realising it, I think I probably started this account to post and reflect on music videos like this by Hiperson, an indie-band from Chengdu. To my untrained ears they sound a bit like Carsick Cars (perhaps the most globally prolific Chinese ((indie)) band of the past two decades), albeit with a few more poetic and post-rock leanings.
- It’s a bit more ‘art’ with a capital ‘A’ than the usual punk rock nonsense I listen to in my day to day, but maybe that’s part of the reason this video does something so weird to me. Like, I’m struggling to put my finger on where exactly in my feels this hits me but I know it packs a really powerful punch; so much so, I even shed a tear re-watching this video for the 5 or 6th time the other day. And yet, I’m still at a bit of a loss as to why I find this song and music video so affecting...
- If I had to put my finger on it, I’d say a lot of what’s driving the emotional resonance is the vocal performance. My instinct, usually, would be to balk at this kind of abstract lyricism and the beat-poetry style spoken word delivery as something overly pretentious. And yet if I think about it, it’s probably this very sincerity and emotion in the vocalist’s ‘speak-sing-speak-sing’ style that really grabs me and pulls me into the emotional core of the song. The fact it’s in Chinese also makes me judge it less harshly than I perhaps would if it were in English.
- Aside from the vocals, I also love the simple beauty of the video. The direct to camera performance heightens the intimacy of the lyrics, and the backdrops of the desolate English woodland and hills add to the slightly other worldly feeling of the song also. There’s probably something interesting to say about the band’s use of some older, almost ancient, sounding Chinese wind instruments that give the song an almost mythical romantic quality, but I wouldn’t know how to say it...
- So often I find myself in the mode of looking for the art in stuff in that wouldn’t always be classified that way, and as such I can be put off by bands or people who are often very intentional in their desire to ‘make art’. Whilst I can imagine Hiperson falling into that latter category of ‘Artist’ they’ve very much disarmed with this piece of their art, and I can only thank them for it.

Female-fronted February - Masterpost
So, that was that month, I guess. Time flies. For your convenvience, here are all the albums in one post :) Spotify is linked here along with the posts, additional streaming links can be found within the posts. If you haven’t been following along the TL;DR is that I’ve been spending my February picking out a new female-fronted album every day. It’s been fun. There’s both some hidden gems as well as some well-respected icons, spread over a good mix of genres. A playlist of all the albums can be found here (in all it’s nearly 20 hours glory), and a shorter version with a few songs from each album (handpicked by yours truly xoxo) can be found here. Statistics for said playlist (including more specific genres, at the bottom) can be found here, if you’re into that sort of thing. Have fun!
#1: Vulpes - Vulpes (x) #2: Liima Innui - Republik / Liima Innui - Inri (x  / x) #3: Maud Lindström - Strategivisor för kärlekskritiker (x) #4: Otoboke Beaver - Otoboke Beaver (x) #5: Sibongile Khumalo - Ancient Evenings (x) #6: Jacqueline Taïeb - Jacqueline Taïeb (x) #7: Alisha Chinai - Kamasutra (x) #8: Sabrina Malheiros - Equilibria (x) #9: Eneida Marta - Lôpe Kaï (x) #10: 海朋森  / Hiperson -  她从广场回来 (She Came Back From the Square) (x) #11: Maria Peszek - Jezus Maria Peszek (x) #12: Dobet Gnahoré - Couleur (x) #13: Joanne Shenandoah - Peacemaker’s Journey (x) #14: Hans-A-Plast - Hans-A-Plast (x) #15: Rasha - Sudaniyat (x) #16: Rossa - Rossa (x) #17: Sister Carol - Black Cinderella (x) #18: Kareyce Fotso - Mokte (x) #19: Nanna - Små Blå Breve (x) #20: 이달의 소녀 오드아이써클 [LOONA ODD EYE CIRCLE] - Max & Match (x) #21: Ivy Queen - En Mi Imperio (x) #22: Shaddaï Ndomboxe - Raison (x) #23: Googoosh - Pol (x) #24: Nótár Mary - Cigánylány (x) #25: Pastorita Huaracina - Nuestro Tesoro (x) #26: Najwa Karam -   شمس الغنية / Chams El-Ghinnieh (x) #27: Lijadu Sisters - Danger (x) #28: Giusy Ferreri - Fotografie (x)
So, yeah, end of the project! Would I do it again? Probably. Was it time-consuming? Definitely. At the moment I’m working on a women’s music canon (because gen canons tend to have around 15% women (*including mixed group and being very generous in my counting) and I think that’s a well shame.
Really, what this is, is an encouragement to seek out more female artists, old and new. They deserve to be heard. The music industry has historically been terribly male-centric - it’s about time to center the women once in a while, don’t you think?

It's reverse wishlist time: my favorite things of 2023, regardless of whether or not they actually were released in 2023.
Fiction: Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
Time traveler gets stranded in the wrong time period, weathers the Black Death while her team struggles with their own pandemic in the near-future. This book was beautiful and human and soft and so so sad. Genuinely I've been thinking about it on and off for months.
Nonfiction: Off-Earth: Ethical Questions and Quandaries for Living in Outer Space by Erika Nesvold and The Possibility of Life by Jamie Green
Useful books for people in the space sphere to read, but also would be useful for anyone writing SF. "Off-Earth" covers exactly what the sub-title says with compassion and an intersectional lens, "Possibility of Life" dives into various elements of alien life - how they've been presented in fiction, how they might exist scientifically.
Blog/newsletter: She's A Beast
No-BS, holistic newsletter about being strong. There is far, far more dangerous nonsense in the wellness space than there is clear-headed, humanistic sunshine. I look forward to reading everything Casey puts out.
Music: Maggie Rogers, "Surrender"; Caroline Polachek, "Desire, I Want to Turn Into You"; Tove Lo, "Dirt Femme"; Chappell Roan, "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess"; HOLYCHILD, "The Shape of Brat Pop To Come"; Nickel Creek's "Celebrants".
I'm in my pop girlie era, what can I say. Maggie's "Want Want" and "Anywhere With You" were both in my Spotify top 5, Chappell's "HOT TO GO!" got a lot of play as well, and I'm fully in love with Caroline's "Welcome To My Island". HOLYCHILD's "Running Behind" is such a bop. Dark horse candidate is Hiperson / 海朋森, who don't fall under the pop girlie umbrella who certainly deserve more airtime.
TV: The Mike Flanagan horror anthology-verse. (Hill House, Bly Manor, Fall of the House of Usher)
I can't pick a favorite. Hill House was the scariest, Bly Manor is the only piece of media in recent history to make me genuinely sob, Fall of the House of Usher was masterful. They were all wonderful, heart-ful horror.

Havoc Studio's channel on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpHQ...
Hiperson Evening 2019 is an activity hosted by Hiperson, situated in a recording studio in Chengdu, China, providing an intimate atmosphere between the performers and audiences. The band revisited and performed their debut album, No Need for Another History, after almost 4 years after its release, featuring a chorus by the band's friends and a special installation in the venue by the band.”
More links:  Weibo,  Spotify,  Instagram,  douban,  xiami page,  their 2018 album (她從廣場回來) is at Bandcamp (Maybe Mars) and their Nov 2019 4-song ep is at Damnably Bandcamp. (Spotify seems to have a couple of singles also.)
Let’s check out their new single, Spring Breeze. Posted a few days ago, and a simple MV concept and a beautiful song, with lighter acoustic sections building in power:

MUSIC MONDAY 幕布/ Mùbù /The Curtain
Hiperson (Or  海朋森) is a five-piece rock band from Chengdu, Sichuan, China. While the Chinese rock scene has traditionally been associated with Beijing and, to a lesser extent, with Shanghai, Hiperson, coming from the comparatively ‘poppy’ Chinese South, have made a name for themselves in the last couple of years. When asked about the band’s name, one band-mate explained ‘It’s supposed to be the first thing an outsider would say to humans when he reaches earth. But the alien thing is just a metaphor – it’s about having a different point of view, which leads to different answers.’
Of the lyrics of their album ‘No Need For Another History’, released in 2015, songwriter Chen said  ‘In the songs, I’m most interested in maintaining a kind of childlike attitude toward oneself, toward society… They’re filled with fluctuating emotions about the things around us – the changes everywhere, the chaos of this time. We don’t know what this time in history will hold.’
Keep reading for lyrics in Simplified Chinese, Pinyin, and English…

Someone says it’s a comedy Straight away someone laughs Someone says it’s not necessarily interesting So why is he walking towards it? Some people are about to see themselves The luckier ones are about to see their future selves The unknown stage glitters And this long road is the curtains
This is the main street leading to the theatre  This is the main street leading to the theatre
He’s one of tonight’s actors  He’s mingling with the theatre audience  They try to guess at one another’s performances But fails to recognise each other on sight

Tumblr media
Hiperson
 Kolibri Rekords
Tumblr media
[Kolibri Rekords
Tumblr media
Grrrl Gang [Not Sad, Not Fulfilled] (2018)
Tumblr media
Jirapah [Planetarium] (2019)
Middle Class Cigars
Tumblr media
[Middle Class Cigars
Tumblr media
Subsonic Eye [Nature of Things] (2021)
Tumblr media
Sobs [Telltale Signs]
Smallroom
Tumblr media
[Small Room
Maybe Mars
[Maybe Mars
Tumblr media
Carsick Cars [Carsick Cars]
Tumblr media

Day one. Hiperson (海朋森) at NUTS Club, #Chongqing. It's been five years since my last trek in the face-melting, crazy city just a few hours from #Chengdu. A return to the beginning, really, when I was first blown away by their opening set for P.K.14 back in 2013. Their new material is great, and they say they've now got enough for a new LP. I got a taste of this last year at the Maybe Mars showcase, but they're tighter now, more confident. I love this band. Thank You, Hiperson. It's really meant so much to watch you grow all these years. What a perfect start to this thing. Next stop, #Osaka, Japan. ❤️🤸‍♂️ (at NUTS LIVE HOUSE)

Just seeing this in the news...
"We are devastated to share this news with you," SXSW organizers wrote in a statement. "'The show must go on' is in our DNA, and this is the first time in 34 years that the March event will not take place."
Hiperson/海朋森 had already announced last week they wouldn’t be able to make it because of the coronavirus.
Fire EX. 滅火器 and Enno Cheng 鄭宜農 were both going to sxsw and also tour the US together in March, I’ll keep an eye on what they post...  (no announcements yet, but of course they are probably still asleep as of this writing)
UPDATE: Enno and Fire EX. both posted the same message a few hours ago:
Bing Translation: Hello, America, and in Taiwan care about " World Attack Vol. 2 fire extinguisher x enno the us tour " friends who are moving:
Following yesterday, the ministry of culture announced that " following the ministry of culture's recommendation and comprehensive risk assessment, the taiwanbeats will be suspended from participating in the 2020 American Southern Music Festival (SXSW) performance :" The City government has demanded the suspension.
I think a lot of friends are anxious about what will happen next. In fact, we are also waiting for all kinds of news while discussing with the relevant units, please give us a little more time.
Thank you all for your patience and everything is safe.
