The YASHA CD Drama, Stage 1; A Long-Awaited Arrival To Our Arsenal
The first thing my beloved collaborator, @toichinagae, told me about when they reached out to me was the existence of the YASHA CD drama. I was very intrigued, as I'd never heard of it before. I knew of the TV drama, in fact I'd archived it a month or so beforehand, but I never knew that there was a CD drama that not only followed the manga more closely, but also featured some anime voice actors that I NEVER would've expected to work on it!
There are two CDs, this post will be focusing on the first one, referred to as "Stage One." This CD was released on March 24th, 2000, and produced by Pioneer LDC(Currently known as NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan.). This drama's screenplay was written by Asami Watanabe(I could not find any information about them online, it seems there is a key animator by the same name, I am unsure as to if they are the same person.), with music by Nobuo Ito.(Once more, there is very little information about them online.)
The cast list, as sent to me by @toichinagae via email, is as follows(I added some notes on notable characters each voice actor has played, just because I find it interesting.):
有末 静:石川 英郎   Arisue Sei: Hideo Ishikawa(You may know him from Doukyuusei, where he played Hara-sen.) 雨宮 :辻谷 耕史  Amamiya Rin: Koji Tsujitani 有末 比佐子: 井上 喜久子 Hisako Arisue: Kikuko Inoue(You may know her from Kiki's Delivery Service, wherein she played Maki.) 雨宮 協一郎:梁田 清之  Kyoichiro Amamiya: Kiyoyuki Yanada(You may know him from Perfect Blue, wherein he played Kantoku 永江 茂市:松本 保典 Nagae Moichi: Matsumoto Yasunori(You may know him from Sk8 the Infinity, wherein he played Joe.) 永江  十市: 野島 健児 Toichi Nagae: Kenji Nojima(You may know him from Banana Fish, he voiced Eiji.) 三上 尊:子安 武人 Takeru Mikami: Takehito Koyasu(You probably know him from somewhere, I personally know him from Jojo's Bizzare Adventure as DIO, and Adam from Sk8 the Infinity.) ケン・クロサキ: 古澤 徹 Ken Kurosaki: Toru Furusawa(You may know him from the '98 Trigun anime, wherein he played Millions Knives.) ライアン博士 池田 勝  Dr. Ryan: Masaru Ikeda ホッジス少佐:中 博史 Major Hodges: Hiroshi Naka(You may know him from Cowboy Bebop, where he plays Jobim.) 伊東 泰之:飛田 展男 Yasuyuki Ito: Nobuo Tobita (Unclear on who exactly this character is. This va was in Darling In The Franxx, but I don't think he had a notable role there.) 有末 静 (12才): 山田 美穂 Sei Arisue (12 years old): Miho Yamada(..She seems to have done work for a number of projects that are not appropriate for this blog. More power to her.) (*Note Toichi's voice at 12 years old is currently unknown.)
These CDs are currently untranslated, but you can find the .wav files for both in this drive folder.
I intend on creating youtube uploads for each track, for ease of use to potential translators and general accessibility for people who's devices cannot run .wav's(..if any exist lol.)
More to come soon!!

Mystic Sisters- Ch.15 Broken Trust
Hikari’s Pov
“Hikari, can you take this order to Mr. Suzuki? It’s his and his wife’s anniversary cake.”  Mrs. Hino said from the back room. I nodded taking off my apron and hanging on its hook before picking up the cake box. Mr. Suzuki’s apartment wasn’t that far from the cafe. He and his wife always came in at least once a week ordering cookies and lattes. I quickly dropped off the cake and headed back to the cafe. Walking back is when I felt a familiar cold breeze. I looked around and there weren't too many people around. “Great, the perfect time to attack” I  thought to myself. I stood there for a few moments thinking what I should do. Suddenly the air no longer felt cold. All I could focus on was a strong scent. The more I took in this scent the more I was thirsty.  I walked closer towards the scent but stopped in my tracks when I made eye contact with the blue eyed boy that I was too familiar with. The longer we had this staring contest the thirstier I grew. I started to walk towards him picking up my pace as I went. I don't know what I was thinking. I wasn't gonna actually fight him was I? Someone called my name, stopping me in my tracks. I turned around to see Mr Hara.
“Hikari? Are you okay? Are you heading to work?” I turned back around and blue eyes was gone. “I was heading back.” I told him turning back around to face him. He told me he was on his way to the cafe so we walked back together. One the way back I thought about that time Mr. Hara showed up when I was being chased. This was the second time he had showed up like this.  Was he really just in the neighborhood or was he watching me? I mean weirder things have happened. Returning back to the cafe I drank two glasses of water within the span of a minute. Hisako watched me while finishing off a cookie.
“Someone is thirsty.” She laughed. I rolled my eyes at her putting my apron back on and walked into the front. When I got back Mr. Hara was rushing out the door. He always seemed busy. He rarely showed up to school anymore. Maybe there was something going on. Our other teachers always said he had family business to attend to and that’s why he was almost never there. He always seemed to be in the neighborhood though. Almost every time I had a run in with one of those boys he was there. I shook my head not wanting to think about the possibility of my teacher watching me. There were no customers right now so I started cleaning the table. When I was cleaning the last table I knocked over a glass of water. Reaching out to grab the glass when the water on the table froze. I quickly drew my hand back looking at the now frozen water. Did I do that? I touched the water and it went back to its liquid state.  I stepped back for a moment staring at the water. Waving my hand over the water it all went back into the glass. The table was dry like nothing happened.  I can control water now? What’s next?
Hisako was locking up tonight so I got  to go home first. It was windy and pretty cold but luckily the train station wasn't that far. The wind blew harder sending a chill throughout my body. I was walking along the same path I was earlier when I felt his presence. I stopped in the exact same spot where we had locked eyes earlier. I don’t know how long I stood there but I jumped when I heard footsteps approaching me.
“Well, well you must be the one he can’t seem to stay away from.” A tall boy smirked at me.
“Who?” I asked confused. “The blue eyed boy that’s been stalking you.” He laughed taking a few steps closer. I stepped back with every move he made.
“Why are you so afraid hm? Akio was right you are pretty cute.” So that’s his name. Akio.  He tried to grab my face but I swatted his hand away. He raised his  eyebrows, surprised at my actions.  “Playing hard to get? How cute.” He leaned down so we were now eye level.
“I like girls who are feisty.” he winked. With that I punched him in his nose causing him to stumble back a little.
“Is that feisty enough for you?” he looked up at me angrily with blood running down his face.
“Do I need to punch you again?” A sudden rush of confidence rushed over me and I walked closer to him. “Or do I need to break your nose so you’ll get the message?!’
“You bitch.” he snarled, getting ready to attack me when another figure tackled him to the ground punching him repeatedly. I watched as he punched the boy over and over, not missing once.
“Stop before you kill him!”
“Maybe I should.” the boy growled turning back to face me. It was Akio. His eyes were darker and filled with anger. Just like how Haru’s were before. A punch to his jaw sent him flying off the boy and closer to me.
“You really are whipped aren't you? You look at her for one second and you lose your focus.” the other boy said from the ground. His right eye was black. The boy jumped up trying to hit Akio but Akio kicked him sending him flying. Akio grabbed my hand and took off running. For him to have a cold exterior his hands were warm and comforting. Within seconds we were in front of the train station. Looking around it was the same train I always took. He really is stalking me. I heard the train signaling that it would be here any second.
“Get on and go home. I'll handle him.” He finally said.
“Wait why are you helping me?” He didn’t say anything but took off his beanie and put on my head.
“Here. It’s cold.” The train showed up and he nudged me into the train. I watched him from the window running back the direction we came from. I sat back on the seat and let go of a breath I didn't know I was holding. Everything is getting weirder and weirder.
“Im home.” I said tiredly, taking off my shoes and hanging my bag up.
“Why are you so late? Did something happen?” Yua asked from the couch eating a bowl of chips. “You look tired.” Yua followed me into the kitchen as I heated up leftovers. I told her everything that happened.
“So if I were to throw a glass of water at you, you’d be able to stop it?” She grinned hand gripping the glass in front of her.
“Yua don’t!” Before I knew it water came flying towards my face. I put both of my hands in front of my face, stopping the water. This time it froze mid air. I sighed, taking the glass from her and touched the water returning it back into the glass.
“I wonder if you can control other elements.”
“Yuaaaa.” I whined. “That’s not important. What is important is why Akio protected me.” I told her cleaning my dishes.
“Maybe he thinks you're cute.” She winked. I hit her arm with the wet dish towel. “You're not helping.”
I was finally back in my room after a long day. I changed into my pj’s and sat on my bed. I stared at Akio’s beanie sitting on my desk. He seemed so different from the time he attacked Yua and I. He was more gentle and caring. I walked over and picked up the hat running my fingers over the soft material. I closed my eyes and smiled. “Hikari don't cry. I hate it when you cry.” I heard a voice in my head say. I dropped the hat and my eyes shot open.
“Akio?”
A few days later
“Why don’t you believe me?!”  Yua yelled from the other side of the table at our dad. He sighed resting his chopsticks on the table next to his bowl. We were supposed to be having dinner but like most night lately there was more fighting being done than eating.
“If these boys attacked you why didn't you say anything before? You waited until now to tell me or your mom.”
“How can I tell you when you're never home? When you are home all you do is get into fights with mom. What happened to you?!”
“Don’t raise your voice at me.”
“No, because the only time you listen to me is when I'm yelling. Otherwise you forget that you have a family.”
“Yua I didn’t forget-”
“Who is she? Who is that girl you were having dinner with? Remember you said you had a “work dinner”.  He stared at her without saying anything.
“Hikari and I saw you. Haru saw you too. Are you cheating on mom? Why are you trying to break our family apart?”
“Yua that’s enough!” mom cried out finally saying something. Her and I had both been quiet this whole time.
“You always jump to conclusions. You’ve been so wrapped in Haru ever since he left and now that he’s back it’s even worse. He’s changed you. He’s the reason you don’t trust me or anyone. You're just afraid that someone will leave you again like he did.” I could tell Yua was hurt at this point. She was on the brink of crying.
“I'm more afraid of being raised by someone like you. I can't even trust my own parents. I rather be abandoned again than to be raised by you.” Yua got up from her chair and headed straight to her room. Dad turned his attention to me. “Are you gonna follow her like you always do?” He asked angrily. I did follow her. I found Yua sitting on her bed angry. I sat down across from her waiting for her to talk. After a few minutes she finally looked at me.
“You made me stay once but this time we’re leaving.”
“And where are we going?”
“I don’t know. Anywhere but here.” Yua continued on with her rant but I couldn't really hear her. I could hear that voice that I always heard trying to say something. I closed my eyes and focused on what they were trying to say.  “You need to leave. Get out of there and we’ll find you. No matter what we’ll find you. If you need me, focus on me. My name is Saki -”  ” We’ll find you? So there was more than one person looking for us. It seemed like Saki wanted to say more but was cut off. Maybe it was time for us to leave. Neither one of us felt safe here anymore. I opened my eyes and Yua was already looking at me.
“The voice came back. What did she say?”
“We need to leave.”

Valkyrie Connect voice actors
I’ve been looking all over the Internet for a cast list of this game, but came up with nothing (really, people?). So I figured I’d make one myself! Mind you, I don’t have all characters so feel free to let me know anything I missed. Aoi Yuuki, Asami Shimoda, Marina Inoue, Megumi Han and Yukari Tamura are the only women I’ve found so far that play both male and female characters. 2. Listen to the differences between Taishi Murata’s characters. His range never ceases to amaze... the only English voice actors with similar ranges (that I know of) are Ben Diskin and Sean Chiplock. 3. On the female side, Umeka Shouji has a surprisingly large range. I’ve mostly heard her play deeper-voiced roles, and then Corona shows up... 4. I love Hiro Shimono’s evil laugh. He doesn’t go all out with Loki, but he sounds like an insane seagull when he does. 5. As a mythology fangirl, I’m a little annoyed by all the changes. Frey, Mani and Vali are supposed to be male; Skuld is supposed to be a Norn (with Verdandi and Urd); Hel, Fenrir and Jormungand are supposed to be Loki and Angrboda’s kids; Idun is supposed to be Bragi’s wife; Thrud is supposed to be Thor’s daughter and Magni and Modi his sons. I’ll update this “lore correction” once I find more characters.

Apparently in 2015, Matsui was on an NHK show called Switch Interview, where two people from different fields take turns being the “interviewer” and the “guest” as they learn about the other person’s trade. Matsui was paired with architect and designer Oki Sato, the head of nendo.
There's a video of it on YouTube but it doesn’t have any audio and it’s looped and a bit jumbled, so the episode proper has kind of been scrubbed from the internet.
Matsui’s “office” in his apartment complex has a nice view of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government buildings and Shinjuku Park Tower.
What was interesting to me were Matsui’s reference sheets. One of many which were stuck around his desk outlined whether characters used Android or iOS phones, no joke. Sato thought it was funny that Maehara in particular had a zebra-striped phone case.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s the list; italics are my own comments:
Karasuma - iPhone (black)
Nagisa - iPhone (black)
Sugino - Android (white case)
Maehara - iPhone (Zebra case)
Kataoka - iPhone (black)
Boss - iPhone (black)
Karasuma’s subordinate (female) - Android (white case)
Karma - iPhone (white case)
Okano - iPhone (black)
Yoshida - iPhone (white)
Fake Ritsu - iPhone (white)
Terasaka - iPhone (black)
Sugaya - iPhone (black)
Fuwa - iPhone (white)
Okajima - iPhone (black)
Sugaya - iPhone (white) (I don’t know why he’s listed twice and with different colours)
Shindou - iPhone
Bitch-sensei - iPad (Kind of out of place here, but that’s what it says.)
And these three only had colours listed beside their names:
Isogai - white
Kayano - white
Yada - white
He also had character sheets for Class E put up around his work space, laid out in their class seating arrangement:
Tumblr media
These character models are found as an extra in one of the volumes too, but Matsui’s original papers have a lot of other scribbles and notes written on them, like screen tone numbers, or Shindou’s phone model (iPhone 5) and phone case design which happens to be in the likeness of a baseball:
Tumblr media
For the record, Shindou’s baseball phone case is seen in chapters 50-51 of the manga, along with Sugino’s white phone case. And if you squint, you can tell the latter isn't using an iPhone either.
Tumblr media
The anime didn’t keep most of those little details, though Sugino’s phone still looks like it runs something vaguely similar to Android:
Tumblr media
Back to the character model sheets, we actually get a cleaner look at one of them which happens to be the one containing all the kids sitting in the two rows at the back of the class prior to Ritsu’s transfer.
Tumblr media
One of the interesting things about the reference sheets is that Matsui appeared to have scribbled down voice actors beside each of the kidsーmaybe he had voices in mind when he created them. Or maybe he just scribbled them down when they greenlit the anime. Other important characters are also listed on the side with VAs beside their names.
Tumblr media
This image is a bit sharper.
Tumblr media
The list:
Korosensei: Ono Daisuke
Karasuma: Nakamura Yuuichi (Funnily enough, Sugita Tomokazu, who is good friends with Nakamura Yuuichi, ended up voicing Karasuma in the TV anime.)
Bitch-sensei: Kawasumi Ayako (Aguri in the TV anime)
Board Chairman (Gakuhou): Sakurai Takahiro
Woman in flashback: Ohara Sayaka (Likely referring to Aguri. This interview aired in early March 2015, right around the time volume 13 was released; the magazine serialization was running somewhere at chapter 129-130 [volume 15], which is the big reveal with Kayano, and the anime was only about seven episodes in, hence why she’s still listed as the woman in flashbacks.)
Ritsu: Yukana
Terasaka: Konishi Katsuyuki
Karma: Miyano Mamoru (This is hilarious to me in hindsight because Miyano actually voiced Asano in the anime. Also, Matsui actually missed a kanji in Miyano’s name, but what he wrote can still be read the same way.)
Muramatsu: Yoshino Hiroyuki
Hazama: Sanada Asami
Chiba: Fukuyama Jun (Korosensei in the TV anime)
Okuda: Kanemoto Hisako (Kurahashi in the TV anime)
Sugaya: Suzumura Kenichi
Hara: Inoue Marina (?) (It’s quite blurry though so I’m not entirely sure.)
Karasuma’s subordinates
A (Ukai)
Glasses (Tsuruta)
Woman (Sonokawa): Fujimura Ayumi
Ryuuki (the leader of the delinquents who abducted Kayano and Kanzaki on the school trip) was also listed in the bottom right hand corner, but no VA was attached to him.
Lots of random information. To say nothing of the phones (long live Sugino and Sonokawa, the only Android users on that list), all the supplementary material Matsui’s put out about the students and other characters really shows how much thought he, and I’m sure a lot of other authors as well, put into their characters.
Maybe in some strange parallel universe, they got Kamina as Terasaka and Jotaro as Korosensei instead.

My Pocket Auntie characters
Ayami Kayama
Voiced by: Hisako Kanemoto
The third-grader protagonist, who lives next door to her father’s siblings. Her attempts to avoid boredom by finding something new to do every day are sometimes impeded by her clumsiness. After her aunt Miyako is accidentally shrunken, Ayami finds herself having to hide her while seeking a way to restore her regular size. At times she can be childish and selfish, but she has a good heart.
Miyako Kayama
Voiced by: Naomi Nagasawa
Ayami‘s aunt and the deuteragonist, the middle child of three children. She is magically reduced in size to a height of five inches by the well-meaning wizard Hikaru, soon being forced to hide in Ayami’s house. She is usually intolerant of Ayami’s antics, and won't hold back from bluntly criticizing others, even if they are children. Due to her pride, Miyako struggles when it comes to honestly talking about her feelings or when she has been hurt by someone else and doesn't handle being talked down to very well. However, she does truly care for Ayami and her friends deep down, and begins to soften up over the course of the series.
Yasumi Hara
Voiced by: Kayo Sakata
One of Ayami’s classmates, and a skilled seamstress. When she and Daichi learn of Miyako’s plight, she begins providing her with handmade clothes and accessories. She is crafty, yet sweet, and she tends to be one of the smartest students in Funatama’s elementary school. She is also the voice of reason when Ayami and either Daichi or Miyako bicker.
Daichi Ibuki
Voiced by: Rikako Aikawa
Another of Ayami’s classmates, who lives with his widowed father. He is bossy and somewhat arrogant, but despite his sometimes unfriendly attitude, he truly cares for his friends and is always there for them when they need him most. Both he and Yasumi faithfully keep Miyako’s predicament secret and often cover for her and Ayami in times of need.
Ichika Ojima
Voiced by: M.A.O
Ayumi’s younger cousin, the daughter of her mother’s sister. She acts older towards her cousin, often criticizing her ideas. Over time, however, after discovering Miyako’s situation, she begins to show her nicer side as she starts to get along with Ayami. She is a reliable person with a responsible head on her shoulders. Similar to Miyako, she hates being small.
Hikaru Matoi
Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano
A bumbling 14-year-old wizard who wants nothing more than to become a true, powerful magician who does not rely on card tricks and cheap illusions. He accidentally shrinks Miyako while trying to grant Ayami’s wish to turn the former into a child. Throughout the series, he searches for a spell to return Miyako to her normal size. Like Ayami, he is a bit childish, but he also possesses a bit of a temper.
Rino Shida
Voiced by: Emiri Katō
A girl the group meet whose adoptive mother Farita has also shrunken. Rino still lives in Farita’s house, vowing to find her runaway brother, who was responsible for her foster mother’s condition. She is cold to the group at first, but warms up to them after meeting Miyako.
Farita Murakami
Voiced by: Keiko Toda
Rino and Gaku’s adoptive mother. After losing her son, she adopted Rino and Gaku after their parents died in a car accident. Her situation is very similar to Miyako’s, in that she was shrunken via being sprayed with a potion by her rebellious adopted son Gaku. Though she can be strict, she genuinely loves Rino and Gaku, even after being shrunk by the latter.
Kensuke Kayama
Voiced by: Hisao Egawa
Miyako’s older brother and Ayami’s uncle, the eldest of three children. He often tries to look like he knows everything, only to have it backfire in his face. He has a bit of a temper, but he is very dependable, courageous, and nice. For much of the series, he searches for the whereabouts of his younger sister after she seemingly vanishes overnight. Much later, when he learns that his mother knows the truth about Miyako’s disappearance, he confronts her about it. This leads to him finally finding his sister and learning her true reason for disappearing.
Gaku Shida
Voiced by: Marina Inoue
Rino’s brother. After learning that he was adopted, he met a mysterious wizard who gave him a spray that shrank Farita. Having fled into the streets, he hides from Rino until he understands that Farita still loves him and truly considers him as her son, at which point he joins the group to find a cure for Miyako and Farita.
Mamiko Kayama
Voiced by: Yōko Asagami
Ayami’s grandmother and the mother of Miyako, Kensuke and Ayami’s father. She discovers her daughter’s shrunken state at the summer festival. She is very kind and friendly, and makes it clear that, no matter what, she would always love her children.

Like you, the team here at Impulse Pictures has been staying safe at home to help flatten the curve and stop the spread of COVID-19.  As we await the reopening of our offices in Michigan and of our replicator and warehouse facilities in San Francisco we're staying anything but idle during this lock down as we've been busy at work on a slew of new releases.  Our July 28th, 2020 release of Nikkatsu's LOVE HUNTER (1972) is just one of the many titles we'll have in the marketplace once the teams at Synapse Films/Impulse Pictures and our distributor, CAV Distribution, can finally get back to releasing the best in cult cinema in high-quality Blu-rays.  Among the additional titles nearing completion are THE LIVING DEAD AT MANCHESTER MORGUE, Josh Becker's RUNNING TIME (starring Bruce Campbell), Roger Nygard's SUCKERS (starring Lori Loughlin) and Nikkatsu's STAR OF DAVID along with several others that we hope to have out before the end of 2020.  But in the meantime...
There are controversial movies, and then there's LOVE HUNTER.  You may not have heard of it, but it was a cause célèbre upon its release in Japan in early 1972 and remains an important film there for several reasons.  The Impulse Pictures release is the first-ever official release of LOVE HUNTER in North America and the first time it's been made available on Blu-ray anywhere in the world!
Twenty-year-old Kazuo is in love with his college girlfriend, Hisako, but he can’t help but be intrigued by a mysterious older woman named Kyoku, a promiscuous woman unsatisfied with her marriage. As time goes on, both Kazuo and Hisako are pulled into the seemingly rules free, borderless world of Kyoku – with all of its many pains and pleasures.
LOVE HUNTER is a landmark film in Nikkatsu’s history. Not only is it one of their earliest “Roman Porno” erotic productions, but it was so controversial for the time that director Yamaguchi and some executives of Nikkatsu Films were arrested. Employees of Eirin, the Japanese equivalent of the MPAA, were even indicted for allowing the release of this film! It took eight long years for all to be acquitted of the obscenity charges. Nikkatsu Films provided Impulse Pictures with a brand-new high-definition master of this unexpected and seductive classic.
Impulse Pictures is proud to present THE NIKKATSU FILMS COLLECTION, a continuing series of critically acclaimed, classic “eroductions” designed to shock and titillate fans of Japanese erotic cinema.
Special Features:
-Newly Translated Removable English Subtitles
-Original Theatrical Trailer

Subtype of Schizophrenia Can Be Identified by Enzyme in Hair
Tumblr media
Dr. Yoshikawa MedicalResearch.com Interview with: Dr.  Takeo Yoshikawa MD PhD RIKEN Center for Brain Science Japan MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings? Currently available drugs for schizophrenia are the dopamine D2 receptor blockers. These compounds were serendipitously discovered over half-century ago. But about 30% of schizophrenia are resistant to the dopamine D2 receptor blockers. In spite of these conditions, pharmaceutical companies have abandoned the development of new drugs. This is because we do not know the principle of drug design. Therefore, we need to understand the molecular underpinning of as-yet unknown schizophrenia pathophysiology. Schizophrenia is diagnosed by only patients symptoms, not by biological examination. To search for biological underpinning for schizophrenia using experimental animals, we thought that we should examine an endophenotype (biological trait) relevant to schizophrenia. Then we targeted prepulse (PPI) performance. Here, dampened PPI is considered as a biological marker of psychiatric disorders, typically of schizophrenia. Importantly, PPI can be measured using the same behavioral paradigm between experimental animals and human. C57BL/6 (B6) inbred mouse shows higher (better) prepulse inhibition (PPI) performance, while C3H/He (C3H) inbred mouse shows lowered (worse ) PPI. We premised that C3H mouse is “schizophrenia-prone” and B6 is not. To know the molecular basis for differential PPI levels between the two inbred mouse strains, we performed comprehensive protein expression level analysis (proteomics analysis) using the brains of B6 and C3H mice. The expression levels of Mpst, a hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-producing enzyme, is elevated in C3H mouse compared to B6 mouse. Biochemical analysis also supported the elevated H2S production in C3H mouse compared to B6. The examination of human samples including postmortem brains, iPS-derived neural stem cells (neurospheres) and hair follicle cells, gave evidence that H2S production system is indeed up-regulated in schizophrenia. MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?  The previous studies regarding H2S have mainly focused on the beneficial role of H2S.  This is because organisms including mouse and human synthesize H2S endogenously.  Our study shows that H2S, when it is excessively synthesized, brings a detrimental effect in the brain. A functional consequence elicited by excess hydrogen sulfide production, or  how brain function is damaged by excess H2S production, is that excess H2S hampers  energy metabolism in the brain. An origin or cause that induces the hyper H2S production state is, epigenetic changes of genome DNA (DNA methylation), not inherent genetic (genome) polymorphisms (variants). Epigenetic changes can be elicited by subtle brain insults including viral infection of pregnant  mother. This scenario conforms to the so-called “neurodevelopmental hypothesis of schizophrenia genesis”, and our work deciphered one of concrete entities (mechanisms) underlying this hypothesis. Our study provides a quite novel paradigm for schizophrenia pathophysiology, and is hoped  to provide a new principle for drug design.  MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? Response: Development of inhibitors of H2S-producing enzymes could be a boon for schizophrenia patients, in particular those who are not satisfied with current drugs. MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work? Response: We call the hyper production state of H2S as “sulfide stress”.By further delineating the precise mechanisms for “sulfide stress”, for example identifying the proteins that are susceptible to “sulfide stress”, we could know additional druggable targets for schizophrenia. MedicalResearch.com: Is there anything else you would like to add? Response: Schizophrenia is thought to be etiologically heterogeneous. Examination of MPST (a H2S synthesizing enzyme) expression in hair follicle cells could identify the subgroup of schizophrenia suffering from “sulfide stress”, or stratify schizophrenia. We need just around 10 hairs, and such collection should be noninvasive. This could lead to precision medicine of schizophrenia. Thank you very much again for your interest in our work.  Citation: Masayuki Ide, Tetsuo Ohnishi, Manabu Toyoshima, Shabeesh Balan, Motoko Maekawa, Chie Shimamoto‐Mitsuyama, Yoshimi Iwayama, Hisako Ohba, Akiko Watanabe, Takashi Ishii, Norihiro Shibuya, Yuka Kimura, Yasuko Hisano, Yui Murata, Tomonori Hara, Momo Morikawa, Kenji Hashimoto, Yayoi Nozaki, Tomoko Toyota, Yuina Wada, Yosuke Tanaka, Tadafumi Kato, Akinori Nishi, Shigeyoshi Fujisawa, Hideyuki Okano, Masanari Itokawa, Nobutaka Hirokawa, Yasuto Kunii, Akiyoshi Kakita, Hirooki Yabe, Kazuya Iwamoto, Kohji Meno, Takuya Katagiri, Brian Dean, Kazuhiko Uchida, Hideo Kimura, Takeo Yoshikawa. Excess hydrogen sulfide and polysulfides production underlies a schizophrenia pathophysiology. EMBO Molecular Medicine, 2019; DOI: 10.15252/emmm.201910695   The information on MedicalResearch.com is provided for educational purposes only, and is in no way intended to diagnose, cure, or treat any medical or other condition.
