“For Marx, labor is a special commodity in that it generates the value of other commodities. Workers are hired to either bring forth or create all commodities, including the machines that produce objects and the factories that produce the machines that produce objects. Because capitalists are competing with other capitalists, they do not necessarily profit from sticking a high price tag on commodities; their prices, generally speaking, must trend down. This means that, to maximize profit, the costs of the commodities used to make other commodities should be as low as possible per unit, which in turn reinforces the necessity of low prices. Whereas dead labor – i.e. machines (which are produced by living labor) – distributes into each commodified unit an irreducible amount of its cost, living labor, because it is waged and not bought outright, can be forced to work longer and faster for less, reducing the cost of each widget produced. The limit to the reduction of living labor costs is the minimum required to keep the worker’s body and mind on task”

Book haul at HPB
First, here's a pic of everything.
Tumblr media
Here, you can see each of the P. G. Wodehouse titles I got. Never bought Jeeves and Wooster books before, but this should be a great read. The BBC series was hilarious, what I recall seeing when I was a kid. Always adored Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry; in fact, I already have books written by them, too. Also got a couple Jane Austen titles and a Fyodor Dostoevsky that are part of a special edition series.
Tumblr media
Then I got a bunch of books in this gorgeous special edition collection by Chiltern Publishing. I already had Jane Eyre and a couple other titles in this series, so I hope I don't have any extra copies of anything. I don't think so, but I'll have to unbox my books to find out for sure. I'm a bit worried that I might already have a copy of Wuthering Heights....
Tumblr media
And then these books that are more random. I already had books 1 and 2 of Parasyte, so now I also have book 3. Then I already had Baking Yesteryear by B. Dylan Hollis, but this is a signed copy! The Philip Pullman book is a collection of his essays about the writing process. The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce is considered by some to be one of the 100 greatest masterpieces of American literature. And then Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the one book I actually went there for. 😅 Too bad they didn't have a pretty copy, but that's ok. Maybe Chiltern will release one later. 🤔

The Deep Dark by Molly Knox Ostertag
Tumblr media
From Molly Knox Ostertag, writer-illustrator of the New York Times and Indie bestselling The Witch Boy trilogy and The Girl from the Sea, comes a darkly beautiful story of identity, family, love, loss, and magic.
Everyone has secrets. Mags’s has teeth.
Magdalena Herrera is about to graduate high school, but she already feels like an adult with serious responsibilities: caring for her ailing grandmother; working a part-time job; clandestine makeouts with a girl who has a boyfriend. And then there’s her secret, which pulls her into the basement each night, drains her of energy, and leaves her bleeding. A secret that could hurt and even kill if it ever got out -- like it did once before.
So Mags keeps her head down, isolated in her small desert community. That is, until her childhood friend Nessa comes back to town, bringing vivid memories of the past, an intoxicating glimpse of the future, and a secret of her own. Mags won’t get attached, of course. She’s always been strong enough to survive without anyone’s help.
But when the darkness starts to close in on them both, Mags will have to drag her secret into the daylight, and choose between risking everything... or having nothing left to lose.

EIN: 'One of the most astounding photographs in the book [Inside The Dream] is of you with Jerry lee Lewis playing piano while Buddy Holly plays guitar and Don Everly of the Everly Brothers looks on. Imagine you and Jerry Lee, and Buddy Holly and Don Everly all jamming together! How did that unique moment come about?'
Velvet: 'We were on a Florida Tour and had fun jamming on stage before showtime. Phil Everly actually took the photo with my camera. We had a great time.'

So I accidentally deleted my tumblr account awhile ago which is now my new Roman Empire, or my Library of Alexandria if you will. Maybe I’ll try to recreate posts maybe not but I was thinking about this one post of mine that compared Carmilla/First Kill fans vs Non Carmilla/First Kill fans. It went smth like “Oh you don’t like the camera angles on First Kill, on Carmilla we had one angle and never complained why everyone was conveniently standing on one side of the room. Oh you don’t like the plot, on Carmilla the plot was entirely off screen. And yk what we loved every single minute of it.” It was one of my most popular post, maybe my most popular post of all time and even just thinking about it makes me laugh. So if anyone else even vaguely remembers that post and what else I said lmk pls 😭
