A new study has revealed an increase in antipsychotic drugs use in long-term care homes across Canada despite no significant increase in behavioural symptoms of residents – something that may expose a potential area of concern for quality of care, researchers say.
The study, published in Health Services Insights, examined data from yearly Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) reports to assess how COVID-19 impacted resident admission and discharge rates, resident health attributes, treatments, and quality of care.
The report data was collected two years pre-pandemic and in the first year of COVID-19, and was from more than 500,000 residents across Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia. [...]
There was an approximately 10 per cent in risk adjusted odds of potentially inappropriate antipsychotic drug use across the provinces studied, compared with the pre-pandemic period, according to John Hirdes, professor at the School of Public Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. [...]

˗ˏˋ 𓂃 ( angela bettis (1999-2003). cis woman. she/her ). meet EUGENIA O’NEIL, a twenty five year old, who has been in cloyne for twenty five years. they are a vet tech at cloyne veterinary services, known for being inquisitive and morbid. they are often heard humming along to pretty girl by clario. residents would describe them as THE RED HERRING. ( ty, 25, they/them, cst ) WARNINGS FOR : neglect, bullying, assault, and animal death
FULL NAME : eugenia o’neil.
NICKNAME : genie.
AGE :  twenty5.
DATE OF BIRTH :  2/20/1999.
PLACE OF BIRTH : cloyne, ontario.
ETHNICITY : caucasian.
GENDER : cis woman.
PRONOUNS : she/her.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION : bisexual.
ROMANTIC ORIENTATION : biromantic.
RELIGION : catholic.
OCCUPATION :  vet tech.
EDUCATION LEVEL :  associates in veterinary technology.
LIVING ARRANGEMENTS : mobile home, with her mother and father.
FINANCIAL STATUS : lower class.
SPOKEN LANGUAGES : english.
FACECLAIM :  angela bettis.
CLOTHING STYLE :  homemade and mended clothes, particularly long maxi skirts and patterned blouses
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS : amblyopia in her left eye, corrected with glasses.
eugenia was born kicking and screaming in a trailer on the outskirts of town. her parents were like a nuclear reaction—bad for each other in the best possible way. her mother was sickly and her father was something of a free spirit, so by the time she was old enough to be trusted around an open flame she was practically raising herself. she’d come to school reeking of cat piss and cigarettes, teeth yellow and marred with cavities and fractures. the children around her had a tendency to be quite wicked and unrelenting, whenever they had an opportunity to make a mockery out of the young eugenia they would take it in spades. she was spat on, stolen from, sneered at. at first, it didn’t bother her. she spent most of her time the school library reading anything she could find about pets and barn animals, oblivious of what was to come.
she was passionate about mammalian life from an incredibly young age. sometimes it would be all she could think about. her teachers picked up on this and oftentimes she was the one responsible for caring for the class pets on the weekends. as it turns out, her peers at school took notice of this habit as well. as always, they had a plan in place for turning her life into a living nightmare. one friday, as school was letting out for the day, eugenia turned her back on the class guinea pigs for one second before a group of boys ran off with them. she woke up the next morning to the sight of them lifeless on her front doorstep. one weekend was all it took for her to go from being teased and jeered at to being feared, with everyone looking at her like the blood was still on her hands.
animal killer is the type of reputation that sticks throughout one’s adolescence. even the people who would pity her before looked at her with a tinge of disgust. still, she stayed afloat, trying her best to pass her classes and obsessing over boys she knew would never give her the time of day. any semblance of normalcy came to a halt when in her junior year of high school another group of kids followed her home to pick on her. they threw stones, torn ketchup packets, and rotten food at her. to them, it was vigilante justice. to her, it was her final straw. she still remembers how it felt to dig her nails beneath the skin of the ringleader—leaving five twin gashes across the length of his face. it was the only time she ever submitted to violence, the only time she refused to turn the other cheek, but the family still pressed charges.
eugenia was forced to grow up quickly that summer. after months of being paraded through courts and juvenile detention centers, she tried her damnedest to run from the events of her past. she went to school online, found a career that she loved, and managed to support her mother through her illness. she’d later realize that this was something of a calm before the storm. that moment ended when the police department came knocking on her door, asking her about her connections to damien costello. one of the names she’d never be able to forget, a boy that tormented her through school and a witness to her brutal attack on their ringleader. there wasn’t much the police could do, considering their lack of physical evidence—but cloyne is a town that talks. once again, she began to notice sideways glances in her direction, unmarked vehicles outside of her trailer park, and policemen talking to the only people who give her the time of day. she hopes that somehow she’ll be able to prove her innocence, that she could escape this with some shred of dignity left, but with her track record? she might not be so lucky.

Hi! Someone who works in the non-profit/charity sector!
At least in Canada, a lot of our non-profits have been suffering from inflation. For example, food bank operating costs have gone up by 25% while we’re seeing less food being put out due to shrink-flation.
I do strongly suggest reaching out to charities and non-profits because we need them more now than ever! My local food bank has almost doubled in attendees in less than a year (400 originally, now 1000).
Ontarian Non-Profits 2 Checkout:
• Hamilton Regional Indian Centre
An indigenous outreach I strongly support. They focus on our cultural healing, prenatal care, supporting Canadian Indigenous families and so so so so much more!
A lot of events are run through them as well if you’ve ever wanted to partake in pieces of Indigenous culture.
• Alzheimer’s Society of Ontario
Our country’s leading charity in Alzheimer’s education and the leads for trying to find a cure. Old people get neglected a lot and especially old people with this illness.
They support and fund activities for them as well, which is important for stimulating the mind!
• Knight’s Table
Traditional food bank, focuses in mostly on non-perishables. I’ve used this organization in the past and they made sure me and my family were looked after.
1/3 Kids are food bank users.
• Regeneration
Traditional food bank that also serves hot and fresh foods. Provides a clothing closet for homeless and underprivileged as well, paired with a station to gussy up for job interviews. Think of it as a food bank with DLC.
• Rainbow Railroad
LGBTQ+ foundation that focuses on bringing queer folk who’ve been victimized in their home countries here to Canada for asylum. There’s too many countries that fund and support violence against LGBTQ+ people. Rainbow Railroad aids in the immigration process and helps people of our community from around the world.
Conversion therapy and similar methods are still widely accepted and encouraged in certain parts of the world.
• CAMH (Canadian Association of Mental Health)
Mental health non-profit focused on providing humane and healing treatment to Canadians FREE of cost. They run psychiatric facilities both stay overnight and drop in. They also host a 24/7 Crisis Hotline for those in dire states. Furthermore, they run free mental health programs such as DBT, CBT, Talk-Therapy, Group Therapy, Addictions counseling and so much more.
CAMH received a lot of funding cuts back when COVID hit, paired with a huge influx of people needing to use their services. Still they continue to provide these services, though now with wait times due to funding.
I encourage you to research charities within your area and donate either money, supplies or funds to them! There’s a huge need for it. Thank you to everyone who has supported non-profits so far. I can promise you they use every cent.

SHAFIA FAMILY MURDERS
30 June 2009, Canada
HONOUR KILLING
The Shafia family took place in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The victims were sisters Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17 and Geeti, 13 as well as their stepmother, Rona Muhammad Omar, 52. The victims were found deceased inside a car which was discovered underwater. They were killed by their father Mohammad Shafia, brother Hamed, 20 and mother Tooba Mohammad Yahya.
Shafia and Tooba also had three other children. Rona was the first wife of Shafia; she was infertile and had to live in a polygamous home with his wife Tooba.
Tooba had seven children and Rona raised them and had a strong bond with them. The family left Afghanistan in 1992 and moved to Australia and later moved to United Arab Emirates. Shafia made a fortune in Dubai working in a car company and then real estate and became a multimillionaire and settled in Canada in 2007. Rona was in a loveless marriage, and was abused by her husband and wanted a divorce. Rona was treated like a servant and a slave by Shafia and Tooba, who kept her passport from her. Her family stated that Rona feared for her life. The oldest daughter, Zainab fell in love with a Pakistani boy which made her father angry, so much so, he threatened her.
In June 2009, a worker at Kingston Mills locks found a black car in the water, divers found four victims inside. Hamed had earlier reported an accident with a different vehicle belonging to the family in an empty parking lot that morning. It was believed the car in the parking lot was the same vehicle that pushed the black car into the water. The four women were locked inside the vehicle and drowned as a result.  It was believed that they were murdered due to the four victims bringing shame onto the family through their relationships as well as wanting more freedom.
In July 2009, Mohammad Shafia, Tooba and Hamed were arrested on charges of murder under the guise of honour killing. They were found guilty in 2012. The surviving children of Shafia and Tooba were placed in the care of social services.

WRITTEN BY: Brooke (she/her), cst.
BACKGROUND / BIO
The journey of Lia Haugen began within the walls of the Brightwood Orphanage, nestled amidst the bustling streets of Ottawa. Born to unknown parents, she spent their early years within the orphanage, her days defined by the firm but fair tutelage of caretakers and the company of their fellow orphans. Despite the absence of familial ties, Lia found solace in the camaraderie of her peers and the guidance of the caregivers, who were doing their best to provide for the growing needs of their charges. It was hardly a perfect existence, but, for the young orphan, it had been enough.
A few months before her eighth birthday, things took an unexpected turn when they were adopted by Silas Haugen, a solitary farmer from rural Vermont. For Lia, the transition from orphanage life to the countryside encompassed a whirlwind of emotions — excitement, apprehension, and the prospect of hope for a better future. A man of few words and boundless compassion, Silas welcomed her into his home with open arms, his face softening with a grin as he embraced his new child for the first time. With a heart of gratitude and quiet determination, Silas made the decision to move her from the bustling streets of Ottawa to the serene beauty of his home state, where he planned to provide his child with a life of stability, security, and love.
Under the guidance of her father, Lia flourished amidst the fields and rustic charm of the family maple farm. With each passing day, they both embraced the rhythms of rural life: the crisp morning air, the earthy scent of freshly turned soil, and the soft symphony of nature’s song echoing through the countryside. They tended to the land and its animals with care and devotion, their days filled with the timeless rituals of planting, harvesting, and nurturing life in all its forms. Yet, amidst the tranquility of their existence, a shadow loomed on the horizon — the passing of Silas’ father, a stoic patriarch whose memory lingered like a whisper in the wind. For Lia, the loss was keenly felt, a profound lesson on the fragility of life and the inevitability of change.
In the wake of his father’s passing, Silas found solace in the land that had been his family’s legacy for generations. With Lia at his side, they sought to honor the Haugen family patriarch by preserving its legacy and nurturing new growth. Meanwhile, as Lia grew older, they embraced the opportunities afforded to her in her new home, completing their secondary education at Woodstock Union High School and eventually pursuing an undergraduate education at Boston University. They hadn’t really been particularly inclined towards the idea at first; the prospect of attending college was a wholly unappealing prospect, as far as she was concerned. But Silas had been particularly insistent on the matter, and she eventually decided upon the bright lights of Beantown.
Lia’s first two years of college passed in a blur. It had been a time of growth and exploration for the young woman, both academically and socially. They thrived in the vibrant atmosphere of campus life,  distinguishing themselves as a diligent and dedicated student, immersing in their studies with passion and enthusiasm. Socially, she found herself surrounded by a diverse and dynamic community of peers. Their warm and compassionate nature endeared her to those around her, and she quickly became a cherished member of the college community and their growing social circles.  With each passing semester, they grew more confident in her abilities and  fostered an eagerness for what would come in the months and years ahead.
Upon returning home at the end of her sophomore year, however, Lia was met with a unexpected surprise — Silas had found love in the arms of Gavriil Kushnir, a man whose smile was as infectious as his positive and optimistic disposition. Initially, they felt conflicted about the partnership, grappling with feelings of uncertainty and fear, wondering if their newfound love would change the dynamics of the family, and how they fit within it. But it wasn’t long before Lia understood the depth of their love and the happiness they found in one another. And in Gavriil, Lia had found both another loving father, and a kindred spirit whose presence brought endless light and laughter into the family home.
It wasn’t long afterwards that Silas and Gavriil decided to solidify their partnership by getting married, celebrating their union with an intimate ceremony on the Haugen farm. Lia proudly stood by their side, a proud witness to a commitment of their love for one another, and, by extension, herself. It was this experience that incited a desire to explore new horizons and experience the world beyond the confines of the familiar. With the blessings and encouragement of their family, she set off on a journey of self-discovery.
After visiting a few locations, Lia was immediately captivated by the charm and tranquility of a small coastal village in Cornwall, and decided to settle there temporarily. It wasn’t long until she also found herself drawn to a vibrant group of individuals, ones who shared her love for exploration and adventure. Through a series of chance encounters and shared experiences, Lia and her newfound companions decided to take the leap and move into a quaint house nestled amidst the winding streets of the village. Together, they transformed the space into a cozy sanctuary, one where they navigated the joys and challenges of communal living with humor and adventure. Through their shared adventures and quiet moments of connection, Lia found a sense of belonging and kinship, each of them growing increasingly grateful for the bonds they forged in the heart of the village by the sea.
As her travel visa neared its expiration date the following year, Lia was faced with a difficult decision. While she had grown to love her new home in Cornwall, a part of her knew they needed to return home. With a sense of bittersweet nostalgia, they bid farewell to the village and its people that had become her sanctuary. As much as their departure had been a sorrowful experience, they returned to America with a newfound sense of purpose and determination. With a heart full of memories and an enriched sprit, after a quick stay with Silas and Gavriil, she made her way back to Boston University to resume her studies, approaching their final year of education with renewed focus and passion.
With degree in hand the following spring, the world was truly at their fingertips, Lia knew that it was time to embark on the next chapter of her life. This venture brought her to the quiet and quaint existence found in Merrock, Maine. Nestled between rocky cliffs and rolling waves, the small town captured Lia’s heart from the moment she arrived. It just felt like home, the perfect place to begin anew. As they continue to embark on this new chapter and the adventures that will follow, they know this next journey will be like all the others: full of growth, excitement, and endless possibility.

Having another one of those days where it feels like I am living on a different planet from most of the world, so:
1) there’s a funeral home in Quebec offering MAID services (that’s Medical Assistance In Dying)
There’s a nice room at the funeral home, you rent it, go there, and a doctor comes to legally murder you, just like they would at your home
(I am now wondering if you can be MAID-ed in other places like the park. Probably no, but the funeral home feels like a very logical place to have it? Cuts down on travel time?
There are a faction in this argument that believe it should be available, but for free not $700)
2) at the same fucking time, people are trying to expand MAID so that fucking poverty is an acceptable reason to apply, and homelessness
So yes, the government is now debating offering assisted suicide instead of social programs and financial supports for vulnerable communities
You could choose to die rather than, I don’t know, receive financial assistance to improve your quality of living, addiction support and counselling, or anything that might actually help
We already know that a good chunk of the people currently choosing MAID are choosing it because they are living on disability, aka government enforced poverty
(Even inheriting a house from your parents can get you kicked off disability in Ontario, because gods know you’ll never need to pay property taxes, buy food or medication, or travel ever again 🙄
You probably can’t even afford to keep the house, but selling it? Oh no no no, no more ODSP for you that money better last the rest of your life)
3) people are somehow more concerned about issue 1
How.
The government is debating killing people to save money on providing care for them.
They’ve already relaxed the standards to make it easier for people on ODSP and other provinces’ disability assistance to choose death rather than living on what they tell themselves is a reasonable income
(The max you can get from ODSP is less than half of the COVID benefit from the federal government that calculated the bare minimum everyone needed to live)
Meanwhile, they’re dragging their feet for the fourth year running on the first attempt to increase disability benefits in decades
Clearly there is nothing wrong with society if we let people volunteer to be killed instead of rounding them up at gunpoint, right? Just make their lives unliveable first and all those moral qualms disappear

My nephew and I have started sorted through decades worth of boxes and bags of documents and files going back to his paternal grandfather’s time - my sister and BIL were both masters of procrastination so a lot of things that should have been sorted through and discarded before they moved to this house have instead been sitting around unsorted since the move. Technically since well before the move for a lot of it.
This particular item discovered in an old file box of my sister’s brought back memories for me.
The summer of 1985. She’d moved to Toronto some months previously and was renting a room in a house on Bathurst Street, working for a home care service by day and doing laundry at a women’s spa downtown in the evenings. I came down that spring to (in theory) find a summer job, and the two of us would look for an apartment to share, while I attended the Ontario College of Art starting that fall.
(I never did find a job that year, nor did we end up sharing an apartment.)
The 40th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was coming up. Reagan was talking Star Wars (not the movie) and nuclear umbrellas. Brezhnev and Chernenko had died in fairly rapid succession; Gorbachev was just in and already talking about reform iirc. The Berlin Wall had yet to come down. An American warship capable of carrying nuclear missiles was due to visit Toronto’s harbour front. Nuclear disarmament was a big topic.
My sister and I saw something in a free Toronto newspaper about an upcoming protest related to most of the above - the shadow project. The goal: to use chalk paint to mark hundreds of people-shaped “shadows” on streets, sidewalks, and buildings, reminiscent of the images etched into surfaces when the bombs fell. We decided to participate. Everyone was given one of the above cards, marked with our name and providing contact phone numbers and the legal hotline to use if we were arrested.
I remember it mostly as a minorly scary (chance of arrest, ack!) but mostly fun night, spent with a group of other people while we ran around with our little buckets of chalk paint and paint brushes, painting life sized “shadows” every few metres along the stretch we’d been assigned. I think we were on University heading south from Bloor, because I can remember coming up to where the road split to either side of buildings (but it might have been Spadina).
I also joined a protest group that occupied Nathan Phillips Square for a few days; I can remember sitting in circles singing protest songs, sleeping overnight on the grass in the little parkette there with other protesters wrapped in sleeping bags and blankets, going on coffee runs to refill thermos or use publicly available bathrooms in the underground PATH commercial zones nearby (including the very high class ones with perfume dispensers underneath the Hotel York, among very few open at oh-my-fucking-god early in the morning). The dog in the bandana who the police were unsure of what to do with when they arrested his owner (iirc they just picked out a few known faces to take in, most of us were ignored and just sat around and sang some more). I remained involved with the protest movement for several months afterwards, until my college work load got to be too much. Oh, and I was introduced to Bloom County at one of the evening coffee shop meetings, when a member brought in his anthologies (thank you random person for getting me hooked on the adventures of Opus et al).
It was an interesting time to be on that line between teenaged and adulthood.

Ontario pharmacies will officially be able to assess and prescribe medication for 13 common ailments as of Jan. 1.
The service is intended to make access to care more convenient by eliminating a doctor's visit, according to a release from the Ontario Ministry of Health. And it's free for patients with a health card, the ministry says.
"Empowering pharmacists to use their expertise to assess and treat minor ailments helps patients get the care they need sooner and closer to home," Justin Bates, CEO of the Ontario Pharmacists Association, said in the release.
The move comes as Ontario hospitals and clinics have been hit hard with a surge in viral illnesses.
The government first announced in July that it intended to give pharmacists more prescribing power in the hopes of reducing the load on primary care physicians and emergency rooms. While pharmacists said at the time they were glad to see the changes, they also said the changes should have been made sooner and don't go far enough.
"Ontario is taking a very cautious approach with only 13 conditions," Bates previously told CBC News. "We need to expand it."
Here are the conditions you can skip the doctor for:
- Allergic rhinitis.
- Candidal stomatitis (oral thrush).
- Conjunctivitis (bacterial, allergic and viral).
- Dermatitis (atopic, eczema, allergic and contact).
- Dysmenorrhea.
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease.
- Hemorrhoids.
- Herpes labialis (cold sores).
- Impetigo.
- Insect bites and urticaria (hives).
- Tick bites, post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent Lyme disease.
- Musculoskeletal sprains and strains.
- Urinary tract infections.

My Competition
Although my idea to specifically target professionals within the equestrian industry is new, there are many other dog walking/care services within the area of these different horse shows, so I think that it is important to keep this in mind. The three big competitors that I have chosen seem to be some of the most popular dog walkers within the surrounding area’s of Ontario’s two big horse shows. We spend most of the summer split between Caledon and Erin, which provides me with a unique advantage over these competitors being that I go where the horse shows are, meaning I am in both locations rather than just one like the competition. First is Wags N Wiggles Dog Walking and Pet Sitting, located in Caledon. Their website is definitely adequate, although it is nothing exciting. I can’t seem to find anything about the pricing, although I see that they seem to offer many different levels of service when it comes to dog walking and pet care. The advantages that this company offers would definitely be how many different needs she can cater to, however she does have the disadvantage of not already being at the horse shows. I would say that the website is another weakness because although it is alright, it isn’t the easiest to navigate and I think if I were to be searching for a dog walker I would probably look for a website that looks a little bit more professional and easy to use. Next is Bold Canine which is a dog walking/pet sitting service located in Erin. This website is a lot more user friendly compared to the last, and just seems a bit more professional. They have the advatage of offering many different services as well, such as training classes, however for the audience that I’m trying to reach I don’t think that this will sway them. I can’t find prices for the dog walking services however I can see that training classes are $275, so I’d Imagine that the walking service is fairly pricey as well. They also have the advantage of already having a strong team assembled consisting of many professional animal trainers. The final competitor I’ve chosen to look into is Trishs Pet, another service located in Erin. This seems to be another one of the more popular dog walkers in the area, because there is a waitlist for almost every service that they offer. Once again, the website is underwhelming and definitely looks a little “DIY”. A 30 minute individual dog walk is $25, but she also offers longer group walks as well as in home pet sitting. One common strength amongst all of these competitors is that they offer many services whereas I would only be offering dog walking, however for the problem that I am trying to solve I don’t think that this will be a problem. Wags N Wiggles have testimonies on their website and it seems like they are doing a great job at what they do, and from what I could find about the other two businesses people seem overall quite happy with them and their services as well.
