A new report calls out the B.C. government for falling behind other provinces when funding medication for some ailments, including rare conditions.
The report from the Gastrointestinal Society says between 2018 and 2023, the B.C. government rejected coverage for 31 critical medications that are approved by most provinces.
In comparison, it says Ontario and Alberta declined coverage for two to three of the same medicines.
The report stated that when medications were covered, B.C. allocated only $257 per person, compared to the Canadian average of $442. [...]

A group of grassroots NDP activists is planning to push for pharmacare to be a make-or-break element of the federal party’s supply-and-confidence deal with the Liberals at a policy convention next week.
The agreement has the NDP supporting the minority Liberals on key votes in exchange for progress on shared priorities, including pharmacare.
The activists are submitting an emergency resolution to declare that the future of the deal is contingent on legislation that commits to a universal and entirely public pharmacare program, which they hope will be debated on the convention floor in Hamilton.
The group, called Stand Strong For Pharmacare, launched a website for delegates to encourage them to take a strong stance on the policy and hold the Liberals to their agreement.
“Our NDP convention resolution would make it clear that if (Prime Minister) Justin Trudeau breaks his promise for universal, comprehensive, and public pharmacare, it will have consequences,” the website states.

Mr. Bouchard: For much of our recent history Alberta has paid far more in federal taxes than we get back in programs or transfers. Even during the last economic downturn we were the largest net contributor to federal finances, yet we consistently receive less than our provincial neighbours in per capita funding. When we do receive funding, those federal dollars come with ideological strings attached, offering funding on its own terms, bypassing the provinces and forcing municipalities to dance to Ottawa’s tune. In other cases Ottawa ignores programs already in place and wastefully spends on identical programs like pharmacare and dental care when what we really need is envelope funding to expand existing provincial programs in these areas.

We're finally getting public dental care! (it's expanding to all low- and middle-income ages in 2025) Things can change. They can get better. Who's in government can make a difference. Getting a minority and needing to work with other parties can make a difference.

the fucking. the fucking lack of thought put into ‘opening up’ maid to people with mental illness as their sole ‘issue’ is deplorable and reading the faq that camh put up is nauseating, including ‘we’re not sure how they’ll differentiate between people who are suicidal and those who ‘genuinely need’ maid, or that there are, in fact, any standards to satisfy.
What happens if someone with a mental illness wants MAiD because they don’t have enough money or a decent place to live and experience intolerable suffering as a result?
This will be another the key challenge for people whose sole underlying medical condition is mental illness when MAiD becomes legal.  We know that people with mental illness are over represented among those who live in poverty or those who experience homelessness, and it is unclear if or how that will impact requests for MAiD where mental illness is the sole underlying medical condition.
At this time, there is a requirement that for MAiD requests where a person’s death is not reasonably foreseeable that the person be informed of all available means to relieve their suffering, including ‘community services’, and be offered consultations with those who provide those services. There is also a requirement that the person and their healthcare practitioners agree that reasonable means to alleviate the person’s suffering have been discussed and seriously considered.
Recently, a government-appointed expert panel recommended that ‘community services’ be interpreted to include income and housing supports as a means available to relieve suffering.  It is important to note that this is just a recommendation at this point. It is also unclear what would happen if the income or housing supports that are offered are inadequate, inappropriate, or inaccessible.

To quote the article, "Alberta intends to opt out, and instead intends to obtain a full per capita share of the funding," and the health minister's office said that Albertans already have access to pharmacare through health insurance plans with their employers or the government. As if everyone has a job with benefits or can afford Blue Cross... 🙄
