Okay, mis petite amores, today’s fish is a little less flashy, but still - they glow. In this post you will learn about fish candles, overland grease trails, and a theory on the state of Oregon.

I would like to introduce you to Thaleichthyes pacificus, also known as the eulachon (you-luh-con, in the lower 48; hooligan in Alaska; oolighan in Chinook Jargon)Also known as the candlefish.

These are tiny smelt - but they are also extremely fatty fish.

With up to 15% of their body weigh being fat tissue, if you dry one out and string it on a wick, YOU CAN LITERALLY BURN IT LIKE A CANDLE.

They’re anadromous, like salmon, so they live in the ocean during most of their lives but spawn in freshwater rivers - though they’re rather less predictable.

Indigenous communities on North America’s Pacific coast included eulachon as part of their diet, and often processed them for oil - which is done by letting them rot in a hole in the ground for about a week before adding boiling water and skimming the oil off the top.

Eulachon oil was so widely traded between coastal tribes and inland tribes that the trade routes were called grease trails.

In fact, one archaeologist argued in a paper that the name of the state of Oregon was derived from the Chinook Jargon word - oolighan.

A few distinct population segments of eulachon are threatened or endangered, so at this point I would not in good conscience recommend setting any on fire.

I wanna introduce my cat on here because she is the angel that potentially saved my life.

Meet Hooligan the way I did 🖤 I had the shittiest birthday last year, and she just popped up on my porch a few days later. I felt like she was a birthday gift from God. I see myself in her. Lost little baby scared in the big world, she’s actually the most cuddly cat I’ve ever met in my life and so loveable despite what she’s been through. She was only about 3 weeks old when I found her. She was dying of dehydration and starvation.

My boyfriend really didn’t want a cat, but he couldn’t say no when she popped up, I had been asking to get one for years and he always said no.

I nursed her back to health and she’s an extremely curious baby now, she got stuck in a tree a few weeks ago and it scared the hell out of me. She had to stay there overnight until I paid these two men $100 to come climb it and get her down.i couldn’t sleep all night I was out there talking to her to let her know she wasn’t alone.

I say she’s my angel because I was struggling with the toughest depression. I couldn’t get out of bed in the morning and when I found her, she forced me to get out of bed to feed her and take care of her and play with her. And every time I was doing something I wasn’t supposed to be doing she would meow incessantly at me. It was the weirdest and cutest thing. Tumblr wouldn’t let me post more images than this so this was the first few days that I had found her. I’ll post some more progress pictures of what she looked like on her journey to health and happiness . She is hope that somebody someday will love me the way I love my cat.

Review: This album wins an award in my mind for making me remove my earbuds in confusion more times than any other piece of music. What starts off as a typical rock beat— clear, bright guitars and heavy vocals— immediately takes a sharp left as the panning and echos crash harmonies in your ears just far enough apart to disorient. It’s disruptive and cacophonous, unharmonious in just the right way as to be surprising but not unpleasant… at least not completely. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I enjoy the album— it’s not something I don’t think I’d ever listen to twice— but it’s an enlightening experience all the same and I think everyone needs to check it out at least once.
