for starters, i am from a family that is at least partially norwegian. i have a norwegian prayer in the kitchen from my great-great grandmother who visited and brought it back. i worship norse gods, and because of this read a lot of history papers and academic sources (because a lot of people will just Fucking Lie about this shit) to get a better understanding of my gods and various other spirits and religious systems that would have been in place in antiquity, as well as tracking how these folk stories have evolved.

but the nords. the nords are just terrible pop culture vikings by and large. they barely resemble any actual norse people, but its very clear they are based on that. and there is a lot of Bad implications of it, as well as it just not making any fucking sense.

a lot of the shitty violent pop culture viking bullshit is based heavily on conan the barbarian. which is weird because conan is not norse at all. why he became conflated with viking shit is beyond me, but i am not an expert on pulp fiction novels or bad 80's fantasy movies. perhaps it is because of the connotations of "barbarian" being given to northern europeans by the greeks (and i believe romans). maybe he is conflated with vikings in the novels or movies. idk.

we get a double dose of racism in that the "barbarian" aesthetic is just a bunch of non white "tribal" clothes and customs and aesthetics all shoved into a blender, pureed, and then poured all over white people. with a heavy dash of violence added on top, because why not conflate all "barbaric" cultures with warmongering and violence. the only reason pop culture "vikings" are exalted for this violence is because they are white. but other cultures get conflated with a hyper specific northern european raiding culture, and then are treated with violence because of it.

also, i find this kind of militant violence to be frankly fucking stupid and makes no god damn sense. vikings were a specific profession that existed in a specific period of time. most norse people were farmers, fucking obviously. but with this conflation of purely war mongering barbarians with nothing else to their culture besides war and violence means you get the majority of their people being people dying in war.

the esteemed halls of the dead in norse mythos were not the pinnacle of honor people were expected to strive for, but instead stories told to grieving families who couldn't even bury their loved ones properly, as taking a dead body back across the sea in a boat wasn't really feasible. but now those stories have become equated to the goals in life the norse people had the same way christians want to go to heaven. the norse people weren't even a culture that focused on the afterlife all that much! it was more so concerned with living a good life for the sake of having a good life. the afterlife most people went to would just be a continuation of their life on earth. but again, there is one big nord afterlife in TES, based on valhalla, where people strive to go to after death so they can be ready to fight a big battle with shor at the end of time.

the nord lore and pantheon is likewise irritating to me because i keep getting the vibe they are trying to fit the norse pantheon and stories into a very christian framework. kirkbride's work slightly less so but its instead trying to put the norse pantheon in a different framework, one i don't fully know. but when you know most of the moving parts of old norse religion, you begin to see that its quite difficult to rip parts out and shove it into something else and have it all work right.

so basically i think the nords are a confusing amalgamation of pop culture nonsense, christianity, and bullshit that is seeped in real world racism regardless of how much people want to just. not think about it. it annoys me at best and royally pisses me off at worst. even today there are still white supremacists eating skyrim slop up and racist skyrim content used to further radicalize people to white supremacist ideology. this wasnt even intentional on bethesda's part, but that doesn't mean its not painfully obvious.

About once a month, I get a comment on one of my posts saying something along these lines

“Uhhh, you left out the part where Nissa was a fascist!”

To be perfectly frank, I think both of these points are stupid and not worth my time, but just to give these posters the benefit of the doubt, I’ll assume they mean well and respond to them, once and for all, this way:

To address the first point, you’re right: in my posts celebrating Nissa and the journeys she has taken, I do tend to leave out material that was retconned. This isn’t entirely true, however, as I wrote an entire essay about this on my Tumblr page, which I doubt people slipping into my comments to post “gotcha!” have bothered to read. But anyway, to assume the best of these posters, let’s take a brief look at this retcon. Outside of a few brief blurbs in the “Duels of the Planeswalkers” video game and her 2009-era character description on Magic’s website, the “racist Nissa” characterization comes entirely from the In the Teeth of Akoum novel from 2010. And yes! In this book, Nissa is a hilariously stupid racist (frighteningly like real racists, imo). However, many aspects of this book were retconned in Nissa’s Magic Origins reboot. To note, in the 2010 novel, Nissa has no idea what the fuck Akoum even is and lets herself get led there by Sorin and Anowon. In the reboot, we learn that, among many other changes, she went to Akoum previously in her life, as that journey is what led to her sparking. Either way, post-Origins, many aspects of Teeth are questionably accurate at best. It’s quite safe to assume that with how horrified Nissa is when she sees Lorwyn elves hunting goblin children for sport that that particular aspect of Nissa’s personality (white supremacy) is no longer a part of her characterization.

For the second point, this one is just crazy, man. I don’t know y’all come up with this stuff. I don’t even know how to address this politely. Keep in mind that I am not by any stretch saying that Nissa is now a perfect cinnamon roll that never did anything wrong ever. Nissa is at fault for not trusting Sorin and setting the Eldrazi free. This is a decision that forever will, and should, haunt her. In the newer lore, she still distrusts vampires and outsiders in her youth because of how she was raised, and this is wrong of her. But Nissa does not distrust them because she thinks she is somehow morally superior to them by nature of birth. Nissa was raised as a member of the Joraga nation. The Joraga, as even the most basic of searches into the Magic wiki tells us, “eschewed outsiders and held even the other elves of Zendikar in disdain.��� Nissa carries this distrust of outsiders with her into her adult life and doesn’t really learn to let go of this until she meets the Gatewatch and learns to expand her horizons. And again, Nissa was wrong for this xenophobia. But don’t get it twisted: there is still a big difference between fear and distrust of outsiders and fascist, ‘hierarchy of races’ bullshit. Both are rooted in fear, but for all her many shortcomings, the retconned Nissa of the new lore would never advocate for elves ruling the multiverse at the top of a racial hierarchy like the older Nissa would (and did). This is hammered home in her Origin story where she is horrified by watching Dwynen lead other Lorwyn elves as they slaughter entire tribes because they think it's funny. Furthermore, on the subject of Lorwyn elves, I would argue that old Nissa is fairly boring as a villain, as “racist elves” as a concept was already explored in depth in the Lorwyn stories. An entire planeswalker with that as her bit would get boring very quickly.

Lastly, and I suppose this is subjective, but isn’t a nuanced character, deeply flawed but trying her best to shed the xenophobia ingrained in her more interesting that an unrepentant, racist dumbass learning that “goblins are people actually!” only after she condemned an entire world to death? The latter might be (darkly) funnier, I’ll give you that, but the former makes for a much more interesting and emotionally satisfying narrative arc.

💞2025 Purchases💞 (yap incoming)

Last year I sold quite a lot of my old wardrobe. Stuff I’ve had since I was 13/14- which was a mix of lacklustre quality taobao, impulse purchases and classic dresses I haven’t worn in literal years and was holding onto because I’m entirely too sentimental. I bit the bullet and threw them all on Vinted/lacemarket. So my wardrobe has been pretty empty for a while now.

This year has been fab for finding holy grails and wishlist pieces- most notably the Honey Cake Tokyo special set jsk (bottom pic/headbow is from the 2019 mto instead of the original set barrette, at some point a monster came in the middle of the night to split a special set up) I’d seen this specific hybrid set float around British/European second hand markets for a couple of years- I’d never been in the financial position to afford it. The stars aligned for once and I snatched it up.

The honey cake special set has been my personal white whale for years- although it’s unknown exactly how many of this specific release were made, I spoke to a couple other owners of the Tokyo special set jsk and estimates for the yellow colourway are at about 5-8 dresses. The second I found this dress 6 years ago whilst browsing lolibrary I made it a person goal to own it. Honey cake is one of my favourite prints of all time, but I’ve never fully liked the bib bodice of the switching jsk or the frill-less bodice of the round jsk. I think the Tokyo special set is very elaborate in its construction. It has pockets + a built in petticoat (BRING THEM BACK AP) the front waist bow is comparatively huge when judged against the other jsk cuts. It’s everything a stupid little 2010s ott sweet supremacist like me would want.

The other big purchase of mine recently was the Milky Chan the Fawn Necklace Style JSK in white. Over the past couple years I’ve noticed a massive, massive resurgence in the love for this print. This has lead to the obvious and the price for this dress (and it’s accessories) has skyrocketed like hell. I have a complicated past with this print- I owned a very bad oo jia (??) replica of it when I was a literal child (11-12) and I was tricked into thinking it was authentic. It left a sour taste in my mouth and I would never imagine myself regaining my affection for the little pink deer. But over time I found myself falling in love with the print again, pulling myself away from mercari lest I spent £600+ on an op with no waist ties or a ‘full’ set with pieces missing.

Luckily for me (and my bank account) I found a heavily yellowed milky chan necklace style jsk at a very very reasonable price. I’m no stranger to fixing up staining and damages (joys of being dyspraxic in expensive, delicate clothes) so I decided to take a shot at it. After a couple of oxi baths I’m happy to say that I saved both the dress and my bank account a lot of pain and sorrow!! The details on this dress are amazing- three types of lace, the faux gem detailing. It’s so decadent and lovely. The dress itself is also LONG. It’s a good few inches longer than most of my other ap pieces. I’m 5ft/153cm and it goes slightly past my knees. The skirt can hold a ridiculous amount of volume, definitely break out your poof monsters for this one.

You'd think that by spending so much time online that I'd be desensitized to insanity, but it really is physically jarring coming face-to-face with someone who honestly, genuinely believes that Trump is akin to some kind of grand wizard from the KKK. There's this odd extremism coming out of some disability advocates recently that is literally relabeling words as slurs. They chime in when you use words like stupid and idiot and crazy saying "that's a eugenicist slur" and while they have a point that some of the ideas around intelligence and ability and cognition make us use some words as place-holders for what we actually mean (such as "gay" being used in the place of "stupid" or "uncool" back in the 00s), saying a word is a slur doesn't make it a slur or mean that it's being actively used as one. Bitch and cunt can also be slurs, but they ain't always. So while I think it's important to look at your beliefs and the language you use 1. I don't think it's actually helpful to treat people who say "moron" like they're ideologically identical to white supremacists 2. It's really telling that people often throw around the phrase "the n-word" in their discussions and it's like how is stupid or idiot a slur worthy of 'he who shall not be named' censorship, but that slur you can't eveb bring yourself to say is just "-word" like come on. "Stop using the m-slur it's just like the n-word for disabled people" fuck at least 20 miles off for several reasons. These are a same people who think policing the use of words like narcissistic and obsessed are more helpful than fighting the system of ignorance and patholigization that allows so many to have their rights and humanity taken away as "treatment." English is a contextual language. You can... sandwich a wrong word and people can still figure out what you mean. Not every sentence is well formed and thought out, and they don't all have to or need to be for people to be your friends and comrades. Quit dividing and abandoning community because someone you don't know very well used a word you don't like. Talk to them as a peer, not as a ruler to a commoner. Get to know them, and quit the ultimatums. Your definition and your experience aren't the only ones, and if that's all you care about, all you're gonna get is isolated.
