Accessibility Is Baked Into The DNA Of Digital Theatre
By RnD
We’ve heard so many times in the recent news just how inaccessible in-person theatre can be for audience members with disabilities. From parents with autistic children being asked to change seats, to an audience member watching closed captions being called out from the stage. They serve as reminders that it is very easy for in-person audiences to be “othered” or ostracized for no apparent reason other than they cannot conform to some arbitrary norm that able-bodied audiences follow without even thinking about it. I even wrote a blog post about this years ago for Howlround talking about my life with Tourettes. While sometimes the audience members get an apology many times it seems there is no recourse unless they make enough of a stink that the theatre companies are shamed online. There is one movement in the arts where these audience members can be accommodated with no problems. In fact they barely have to ask because the accommodations are baked into its DNA. That artform is Digital Theatre.
Tumblr media
Say it's impossible for little ones to be quiet watching a family show on Zoom. Then you mute your mic. Say that you are deaf or hearing impaired and want to watch a livestream. It is very easy to incorporate an ASL interpreter or simply turn on auto captions. What if you're chronically ill or have mobility issues which preclude going to see a show in a venue that may or may not be accessible. Good news! The show is happening right there in your living room. You are in a space that is created by you for your comfort. You don't normally have to ask for these accommodations and, while CC and ASL aren't standard practice in digital yet, they happen often enough to be common. There is no shame and no one watching or listening in. You can be your whole self in comfort. Because of this we like to think of Digital Theatre as a breath of fresh air in terms of accessibility. However that does put the fledgling artform in a predicament.
We don't want to see digital theatre known ONLY as a haven for those artists/audiences that would be marginalized in in-person venues. This is mainly because it isn't true. There are thousands of artists with disabilities working in brick and mortar venues everyday. Also there are several able bodied artists that work in digital theatre. What we hope to do is highlight how well a relatively new artform in its third year is already miles ahead of the older venue in terms of accessibility, collaboration, and flexibility.
As much as the mainstream industry likes to adopt and absorb whatever will make it money they are still very slow to make changes especially when there is a healthy and able bodied subscriber base that has bought up all of the season tickets. There are very few in-person theaters that I have seen take a very proactive approach and tried to solve a problem with accessibility BEFORE it cropped up. At least with Digital Theatre so many of the questions with accessibility are answered already so that audience members don’t have to ask as often. Digital Artists still need to be urged to be just as proactive. Digital Theatre just happens to accidentally cater to some of the very same people that in-person marginalizes.
It’s that accidental nature of Zoom accessibility hat scares us. The fact is that no amount of pulling and prodding in the world will make a system that doesn’t want to budge make the needed changes. The system has historically favored a very particular subset of the population and very little hand wringing and fear of having to close their doors has made Theatre Companies search for ways to bring new audiences in. Unless it is made incredibly clear to the mainstream theatre sphere they won’t see the potential of Digital Theatre to reach the audiences that aren’t coming. It would require them to ask themselves why they weren’t coming in the first place.

Slow Cooking Live
Food-sharing is an act deeply connected to our ideas of home, nourishment and community.
Slow Cooking Live are two special ‘An Evening with…’ style live events, with home-made food sharing and conversations with artists Selina Thompson and Toni-Dee Paul (Fri 14th) and Sonia Sandhu (Sat 15th).
Hosted by Xavier de Sousa and video work directed by Richard Warburton, SCL is a live podcast-video art experiment, inviting artists who have a history of migration and also work with food-making and food-sharing as creative tools. Together, they will spend the day buying food from local markets and independent shops, cook together and then travel to Theatre in the Mill to share it all with you.
Cooking recipes that are relevant to the guests’ own creative practices (or their favourite foods), Selina, Toni-Dee and Sonia discuss the origins of the food, the impact on their communities and how they have incorporated it into their creative practices.
These events will were broadcasted live on HowlRound Theatre Commons website, and you can watch the post-live stream here: https://howlround.com/happenings/slow-cooking-live
The events were recorded as part of the Slow Cooking project, which will be fully edited and released as a 5-part series of video and sound art works on the performingborders platform.
Art work by Anna Corfa.
Slow Cooking Live is commissioned by Theatre in the Mill and performingborders. Broadcast by HowlRound Theatre Commons, and live captions by National Captions Institute. Produced by Lee Smith with support from The Uncultured, and Project Managed by Lydia Tissier. Sound art by Olive Mondegreen

One of my most rewarding theatre experiences to date was a track in the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s As You Like It, where I played one male, one female, and one non-binary character. The team that created that opportunity would never have known that’s what I wanted had they not given me the chance to explain what I would find most gratifying.

Happy Tuesday! Found this site - HowlRound Theater Commons- “a platform for theatre makers”-an entry from 2016 mentions the 1983 play “Mud” and its production in The Theater for a New City (New York City) The play was directed by the Playwright Maria Irene Fornes and starred Pattye as Mae; a play about the human condition, redemption and human suffering. Bet Pattye was totally awesome; Fornes and Pattye collaborated many times- Pattye became one of her most popular actors… #patriciamattick #pattyemattick #mud1983 #thetheaterforthenewcity #newyorktheatercity #mariairenefornes https://howlround.com/theatre-and-social-justice

Theater Blog Roundup: Assessing 2023, Hoping and Fearing for 2024
“For the theatre community, it was a time of tumult, turnover, ‘the field is in crisis’ essays, show cancellations due to illness, and budgetary shortfalls.” But also a response: “If our field is on fire, [we] want to be water.’” This is an observation in a post offering highlights of 2023 from HowlRound, which is arguably still a theater blog, although it calls itself a theatre commons. In any…

Quote
Diversity expands the scope of our work by accessing a broader range of experience. By choosing to work with disabled artists, companies gain access to the opportunities that can only be found by “cripping” the work: embracing the disruptions created by disability to open up previously unimagined possibilities.
