I understand that this is wildly different from my usual posts but I literally had to come out of hibernation to say that I am so sick of every single new age book I find saying that shadow work is somehow the best and easiest and first thing that any practitioner should do. I find a new age book. I read the back. I look into the author. I buy the book. I bring it home and I have a great time reading it until the FIRST FUCKING THING it says you should do after they finish with all the introductions is shadow work and then I sigh and skip a couple pages because I am not mentally well enough, and almost never have been, to do it without feeling like absolute filth for weeks.

Like I understand that as a practice that doesn't technically require any materials it could be a really great thing for some people, but as someone who has had very serious mental health related consequences every single time I've tried to do it, every time I read about how it's this wonderful practice that everyone should do all the time with absolutely zero drawbacks I gag a little. Shadow work is hard. It takes a toll on you. I know the idea behind it, but telling everyone that they NEED to do it is fucking ridiculous. No one needs to do anything. Some people (such as myself) just aren't in a position to do shadow work because of their already somewhat fragile mental state.

I consider myself pretty grounded. I've got a much better sense of self-assurance than I ever used to have. But I still think that doing shadow work would be downright dangerous for me, because it took a lot of hard work to get here and I am not going to make myself stare at all of my worst insecurities because then what would the point of all that work be? Maybe in the future I will be comfortable enough to try it again, but until then, anyone who says that not doing shadow work is incorrect somehow can suck my dick.
