The real life embodiment of the Ben Afflick meme. I've been here a while now. November 5th 2020 changed everything. Ex SPN fan who has begrudgingly been dragged back into the dumpster fire thanks to the unhinged choices of a certain Mr Jackles. Current obsession is The Sandman (Netflix show and original comics). I have started diving back into meta analysis for the first time because The Sandman gave me brainworms. It feels good to be analysing decent media again! Big fan of Neil Gaiman's works in general. Other interests include Our Flag Means Death, Good Omens and WWDITS. I just wanna have a fun time and chat really nerdy things with other fun people. Call me Saz. She/Her. It's not queerbait, but taking the marketing into consideration it is definitely ship bait.
Deadpool is a queer character, and it is his character to make jokes about that part of himself. I've seen people moan that he is always sincere when it comes to Vanessa but I would argue that's simply because she's the love of his life - outside of her he's hypersexual regardless of sexuality. He's still a textually queer character no matter how much the homophobic Marvel fan boys wanna deny it.
Wolverine is much more up for debate. In the movies he is very heterosexual (I've been rewatching them and can confirm this with confidence - there is zero queer coding there even if we all wish his rivalry with Scott Summers could present that way).
In the comics though I believe Wolverine is teetering on being bisexual but it's only ever been confirmed in an alternate universe version of him and not the marvel 616 main comic wolverine. (Though I believe certain writers and artists have been coding his relationship with Nightcrawler as queer for a while - still not textually confirmed though).
But the movie is absolutely chockerblock full of queer coding. It's all very hays era subtext and it's on the nose subtext at several points - like Late Stage Destiel level subtext in my opinion (for those who watch Supernatural I'm talking seasons 8 - 15 level subtext which is basically "the story doesn't work if we don't accept these guys are romantically together" subtext).
They knew what they were doing when they made this movie, and whilst they keep the whole thing very tongue-in-cheek, you can tell that there is a sincerity behind it. I think if it weren't for the Disney overlords they could have pushed it further for sure, but there were enough moments whilst watching where I had to draw a breath in shock wondering how Disney signed off on any of this. But let's face it, anyone going into this movie expecting Deadpool and Wolverine - two of the biggest and most popular current Marvel characters - to actually be explicitly, textually gay together with kisses and onscreen fucking and hooking up in any way that will make the homophobic fanboys scream WOKE GARBAGE at the top of their lungs, was just not gonna fly with the studios.
I think perhaps they went a little too far with the marketing. They played on love story style marketing and used lots of hearts and shots of Deadpool caressing Wolverine to really play up the idea that they were in a love story. If the marketing was for a male and female superhero team up, the expectations in the movie would be clear, and had the movie been the same I reckon the Marvel fanboys would have been lamenting the lack of an obvious sex scene - though im sure mainstream audiences would have had more to say about the Honda Odyssey fight had it been Deadpool vs Black Widow for example.
In the end, the marketing plus the lack of explicit hooking up of the characters can arguably be looked at in a "hahaha it's funny cos it's gay" way. Gay as the punchline is such old news that I can understand why there have been articles in notable queer publications criticising the movies somewhat juvenile treatment of homosexuality.
Then again, that's Deadpool for you. Don't expect too much from a Deadpool movie, because it will ultimately come down to dick jokes and sexual innuendos.
It does irk me that the pegging thing - which has made so many fanboys soooo uncomfortable - is treated as if that is connected to Deadpools queerness. Which, it's not. At all. Pegging doesn't have anything to do with sexuality. It's just a sex act, and if a woman is pegging a guy, that doesn't make him gay. Deadpool seems to forget this.
At the end of the day, the movie's "love story" starts with Logan being propositioned by Wade in a dive bar, breaks the sexual tension with a very obvious hate fuck in a Honda Odyssey, overloads the soundtrack with on-the-nose songs about love and sex, has a climax that is an incredibly clear parody of Spock and Kirks greatest love scene, and ends with a classic "and they were roommates" trope.
It's not queerbaiting. But it's shipbaiting because there is definitely no intention among anyone involved to explicitly confirm that these two guys end up together. Even though the movie works hard to "wink wink nudge nudge" us that actually yes they ARE together.
For it to have been better they could have left out the bit at the end where Logan encourages Wade to win Vanessa back because that just screams like a mandatory "no homo" ordered by the studio execs. It would have worked better if Wade and Vanessa had had an amicable split, with her still being a hugely important part of his life.
It would have worked even better if Wade had just fucking said to anyone, even the audience, that yes he did want Logan to fuck him, to be his lover, whatever. It would have been entirely in character for him to do so. The perfect opportunity was after the bartender asked "are you guys gonna fight or fuck?" Wade should have answered "hopefully both if I'm lucky!"
Anyway that's my two cents. Whether this will be further played up in future films - because there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Disney will milk these two prime cash cows as much as possible going into the next confusing AF phase of the MCU - we'll have to wait and see. At this point I'm just hoping that in Secret Wars when whoever draws the short straw in the MCU to go collect these two from their universe, they find them in bed together wrapped around each other, and it's just never explained or mentioned again. I would personally find that hilarious and adorable. They could get away with it I think - just claim it's cos there's only one bed in the crack house - bonus points if Blind Al is also in bed with them lmao.
Until then, at least we have fanfiction - that and it will take at least another 2 watches to pick up on every one of Wades insane jokes and references. Perhaps I missed some other more subtle queer references? It'll be fun to pick the movie apart once it's more accessible for everyone.
So I stand by the fact that it's not queerbaiting. It's not committing that cardinal sin that was so popular in the early to mid naughties. It is definitely ship baiting us though, with no intention and no follow through on making a queer relationship between the characters undeniable no matter how much we wanna believe they fucked in the Honda.
Okay i am gonna tag it this time, i want genuine opinions not looking to fight but discuss: is Deadpool and Wolverine “queerbaiting”?
I have THOUGHTS….
I think it is towing a line of trying to benefit from ✨subtext✨ and “bromance” while we all KNOW the powers that be of Disney will never canonize them as a couple or make implicit subtext explicit text. MARVEL MIGHT have had Wade (their canon queer character) go for it, but under Disney I feel a sinister purposefulness in the two becoming ✨roommates✨ but mentioning Wades ex GIRLFRIEND to remind us “no homo tho” . I personally think this movie and its script does meet the classical definition of “queerbaiting”
I AM NO SCHOLAR I am genuinely trying to sort out the current state of media ….

I watched X-Men 2000 tonight. Yup the Deadpool and Wolverine brain worms got me - at least for a little while - so I figured I'd rewatch the old movies that I havent seen in over a decade and have basically forgotten entirely at this point.
You know what really stunned me? Even more than the slow pace, serious tone, actual dedication to telling a coherent and interesting story with layers of meaning and social commentary attached to it, as well as a sincerity that's been missing from most superhero films since the MCU was born (thanks Josh Whedon).
Nope, what shocked me most was this:
This is a perfect specimen of a man. Look at him. He's gorgeous. But look at his chest? His arms? He's muscular, he's pretty well toned, he's hairy. He's definitely got a six pack - but it's nicely covered by a healthy layer of fat. His skin is plump, he has a bit of squish to him. He'd probably be great to hug (Jean Grey certainly gives him a good squeeze lol).
When he sits down he looks like his stomach will roll just nicely. Like a stomach should.
I know my point here is obvious. It's just that scrolling the Deadpool and Wolvering tag is basically 50% "oh they definitely fucked in the Honda Odyssey" (yes lol) and the other 50% is just horny posting over Wolverine's topless scene like the entire site suddenly adopted Deadpools horny brain.
I gotta give props to Hugh Jackman for his dedication to turn himself into an actual comic book character - because that's what this new movie does. It gives us a comic accurate Wolverine in practically every way (except for his height lol) the suit is amazing, the cowl was a joy to see brought into live action. The body too though was straight out of a comic book artists male power fantasy.
What I wanted to emphasise was that this:
Is extremely tough on the human body. What I wanna know is how long he starved and dehydrated himself for before filming this scene? How long before they shot this did he last drink some water? Because damn that must have been tough. The oil and the lighting probably help further emphasise the muscle, vein, and sinew definition. It's probably similar to how body builders prepare before a show.
Nothing about body building is healthy though. So in the coming weeks as the whole entertainment industry rides on the coat tales of this movies success, and everyone goes crazy over Hugh Jackmans physique, please don't feel pressured into thinking that his 2024 physique in the movie is remotely realistic - or realistically attractive. Like I get the fantasy sure, but come on. I'd personally rather lie on a cushioned bed than a concrete floor.
Deadpool may disagree with me, but he's a masochist lol.
Oh and whilst I stand by the shade I threw at the MCU above, I think Wolverine's different physiques in the movies is a good standard of comparison for how much superhero movies have changed. Because when superhero comics first started getting adapted I think a lot of the choices made were about how to bring them to live action realistically and believably and the attitude was to try not to make them look ridiculous. The first X-Men movies definitely do this.
It was about bringing the comics to life in a way that fit in our world. But over the years, as audiences got more and more used to comic book movies the movies became more and more like comic books and less like a realistic adaptation of a comic book. Does that make sense? So as the movies attempted to bring the comics to life in a way that was less realistic and more comic accurate, the demands on the actors to sculpt their physiques to meet the standards of comic book art became normalised.
I think Deadpool and Wolverine is the MOST comic book accurate of all superhero movies made in the past 2 decades. Half the time the images from the movie look like they could be literally pulled from the pages of the comic books. The story is convoluted and stupid, the plot is barely there and is full of gaping plot holes and elements that don't fit any past stories. The action is ridiculous, extremely fast paced, gratuitous, and violent to a hilarious level. But it's so entertaining, joyful, exciting, and laugh out loud hilarious throughout.
It reminded me a LOT of my attempts at reading through the Deadpool comics (I've read a lot of them but no where near all of them).
To sum up this rambling message with multiple points, I'll say that Deadpool and Wolverine is a really fun movie that I thoroughly enjoyed, but make no mistake there is nothing real in it at all. It is almost literally a comic on screen. Don't expect anything more than that and you'll enjoy the experience.

Saw Deadpool & Wolverine yesterday. Insane fucking movie. Absolutely bonkers. Plot was ridiculous and nonsensical but Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman clearly had enough chemistry and fun to make it work. No spoilers but a certain trashed Honda Odyssey is about to star in a LOT of explicit AO3 fanfiction. Wow. Just wow.
#deadpool & wolverine#im not an mcu fan these days#but i enjoyed this stupid movie#it was way more gay than i thought it would be#people may have joked they wanted to see them fuck nasty#but the implication that they actually did certainly came as a shock#i mean sure it was tongue in cheek subtext#but the fact disney allowed them to include that subtext alone is jawdropping#also all the references to them fucking throughout the move#and deadpool was the gayest he's ever been#the pegging joke aimed at disney had me rolling#anyway#thats enough tag spoilers

I fancied a period drama tonight and Effie Gray was available on BBC Iplayer. I remember I watched it ages ago but couldn't remember much about it other than knowing the general gist of the story of the woman who was close to the Pre Raphaelites.
Well. Watching this movie is something I do not recommend. I think I was getting it confused with the old BBC TV show with Adrian Turner about the Pre Raphaelites.
There is a Tom Sturridge jump scare in this movie and he does his best (the boy is a perfect period drama actor) but the choice to focus solely on the painfully depressing abuse and neglect Effie suffered in her marriage to John Ruskin and then not devote any time to the joy and happiness she felt in her love story with Millais is just bad.
I remember when this story was told in the drama series it was so great to see Effie and Millais finally be together and be able to express their love. It made all the pain worth it.
This is why I dont do the "hurt, no comfort" trope. You gotta have the payoff in a decent story. If you know she gets a happy ending please show us it, don't just tell us.
(It's also a travesty that all that sexual tension with Tom Sturridge doesn't get resolved at all. Not even a kiss! Argh!)
Anyway, it's a fine movie and not traumatic or violent at all, but it is fucking depressing, even when she does get free. So prepare yourselves for that if you feel like watching it.
