Warnings: Agnst, Fluff and some mild heart break.
Note: This series is coming to an end, I feel very pleased with the story I have told, and as a result, I will only have a total of 8 parts to this story. I will not leave you without new stories though, my amazing followers. I have a new Loki multi-part fic in the works and a wonderful new Peter short coming soon.
For now, enjoy this new part! It is much shorter than usual but that is simply because I have been struggling with this one and I want to get something out for you guys so I can carry on the story through Part 8. So this is more of a little half chapter :)
[Catch up here! P.1 P.2 P.3 P.4 P.5]
A superhero is defined by more than how he treats his equals. He’s more than just how hard he tries to save the people he loves, whether it be family or strangers. He is judged more by how he fights the villains he takes on. Does he sink to their levels? Does he kill? Or does he subdue them enough to turn them in?
More than that. A real superhero knows when they have a weakness. A true, god it would break them if anything happened to them, weakness.
And the villains, well, they target that weakness when they want to see a hero fall.
Your head ached, you shoulder felt as though it was on fire, and you were in a pitch black room. No door visible to you, and no windows as far as you could tell.
Slowly, you stood up, your headache causing you even more pain that it had before.
A voice arose from one of the darkened corners of the room.
“She’s awake, boss.”
Peter walked down the hall, searching for his girlfriend. She hadn’t been in school all day and she hadn’t responded to his text messages. He knew she wouldn’t be here, but still his feet pounded the familiar path towards her locker, hoping that maybe she had decided to come after lunch.
Homecoming had come and gone, the danger the Vulture had brought gone with it. But his powers were growing, and something still felt off deep inside him. It was as though every fibre of his body was screaming at him, telling him to go out, to find what was making him feel this way, because it was important.
But what could it possibly be? The only thing weird was that [Y/N] wasn’t here. Her locker was shut tight, no beautiful girl standing beside it waiting for him. He shook himself and sighed in frustration. Why won’t she talk to me?
So he left for his patrol. Once he had gone about his usual routine of stopping by Delmar’s and abandoning his bag in an alley, he felt the sensation upon him again. That there was immediate danger, and it was close to him. But the streets below him were calm, not even a cat seemed to be in trouble.
“Karen, scan a perimeter, give me heat signatures that appear abnormal.”
“Sure, Peter. What’s going on?” The AI spoke to him as he watched her scan commence in front of him.
He shook his head before responding, “Something’s wrong. I just don’t know what.”
Her scan was nearly complete when her voice came loud in his ears again. “Incoming call from [Y/N]. Should I reroute to your heads up display?”
“Yes,” he felt himself let out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding. She was calling him, she was okay. “[Y/N], where have you been? Ned and I tried-”
The deep rumbling voice of a male Peter halfway recognized came through the line instead of her voice. “So, Spider-kid. I take it you’ve been a little anxious looking for her, haven’t you?”
Peter didn’t even have to speak to clue Karen in to trace the call.
“Who is this?” Peter tried to speak quietly, deadly, even but he heard the wavering in it.
Suddenly, though it was muffled, he heard [Y/N] speak, calling out a warning to him. “Don’t come! I’ll be okay! DON’T-” But then she was silenced and the man on the phone laughed.
“Staten Island Ferry. Remember me now, boy?”
“Leave her out of this,” Peter spoke, images of that occurrence flashing before him as Karen pulled up video footage, attempting to get a voice match.
“Now where’s the fun in that?” he growled, lowly. “Keep your eyes open on your patrol tonight, you just might see her hanging around.” The line went dead.
Whoever this man was, he had her. Karen spoke to him again. “Voice match failed.”
“Call tracking?”
“Failed.”
He stared out over the horizon, the sun still high in the sky. “It’s going to be a long night, Karen.”
