How and when did you first listen to Leonard Cohen?

having been into folk music for as long as i can remember i always had an awareness of who leonard cohen was but didn't know much of his music besides "hallelujah," which as a person born in the late nineties i associated much more with john cale and rufus wainwright's covers because of its inclusion on the shrek soundtrack lmao; i got into his music properly in undergrad and really have come to gain more appreciation for him and his work, both literary and musical, over the past five years or so; his music (in conversation with the work of other jewish songwriters in the sixties) also makes up a fair part of my research for one of my dissertation chapters, so my relationship to his work is also now included in my academic life. i also just think he was/is/remains a genius songwriter and storyteller, and would put him and joni mitchell as the two best singer songwriters of the twentieth century full stop
