Weeklies: Stronger
Tumblr media
Happy Monday to everyone!
Last week's new learnings:
Here's some general overview of what we learned this week. I'll be making separate articles on some of them once I've actually finished them, so be sure to check them out! In the mean time, here's the gist of this week's new knowledge:
A. Online Courses
We finished three courses of an ongoing project titled "Dr. Mendoza Series" which involves finishing four special courses in the DOST-PALMS website taught by Balik Scientist Dr. Guillermo Mendoza. Each course has its own certificate, and we've acquired three already! The first seminar introduced the basic principles of the Geographic Information System, which we finished a week earlier, but still had remaining activities for strengthening the learned principles. Last week, we finished two more, which delved into more specific applications of GIS in agriculture, and an introductory course on remote sensing and satellites. It was fun re-learning about the functional capabilities of GIS and which career tracks suit you if you decide to become an expert in geospatial technologies. Don't forget to check them out in case you're interested! [1, 2, 3]
We watched the first six videos of the Rhetoric and Composition course from YouTube, taught by Dr. Emily Zarka, in the hopes of improving my writing and composition skills. There's already been a long list of principles that we could use to enhance our writing skills and habits, including learning about the writing process, and introducing writing as a literacy which allows even the good writers to hone their craft deeper. I'm basically taking this course to pave way for a more structured and in-depth learning of an MIT OCW course I'll be taking next month. [4]
B. Scientific Articles
I'm currently trying to understand the concept of tipping elements in the Earth's climate system through a research by Lenton et al. (2008), and it discusses what particular subsystems of the Earth system as a whole could improve policy making in the field of climate science and in hopefully mitigating the effects of climate change. So far, I've learned how the tipping elements are small things that could affect big changes in the processes that happen in our planet. The team had devised a special mathematical criteria on how they consider a system to be a tipping element, and three more criteria to consider if they could potentially drive policy. I'm still in the early stages of understanding this topic, but I do hope I could talk about it more simply soon. [5]
I read about a scientific article that could potentially change our current science textbooks! A team by Dr. Joanne Stephenson (a geophysicist) from the Australian National University confirmed in a 2021 study the presence of an innermost inner layer of the Earth's inner core—it's a handful to say, I know. They used a search algorithm to "trawl through" previously-made models of the inner core and matched these models with decades-worth of observed data on seismic waves. Simply put, seismic waves are basically just vibrations that happen in the earth that transmit energy in waves caused either naturally by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, or artificially by man-made explosions. Here I also learned a new word, anisotropy, which in this context is how the differences in a material's composition affect certain properties of these seismic waves. The team found out that there were several "more likely" models that matched with the seismic wave activities and it could be due to the different structural configurations of iron crystals within the inner core (anisotropy of iron, whoosh). Although I still have to read the paper to fully understand this, the team concluded that their research might have revealed two separate cooling events in the Earth's formation and proved the inconsistencies in our current planetary models. Knowing full well during my younger schooling that the Earth only has three layers (the crust, the mantle, and the core), this discovery is shockingly awesome, since it means we're still learning a whole lot more about our own planet and it's exciting that the knowledge taught in schools is still evolving! Fun times! [6, 7]
A more recent study (published just this year) by Michinobu Kuwae and his colleagues from Ehime University in Osaka, Japan, have shed some light on the ongoing debate within the scientific community: are we already in the Anthropocene? Basically, the Anthropocene is a proposed geological epoch characterized by how human impacts significantly changes the way Earth systems work. There was an earlier article from the New York Times that I could not read because it needs a subscription, but the headline says that some scientists do not believe we're already in the Anthropocene. The study, however, suggested that we may actually be in this epoch since the 1950s! Through their research, they listed three candidate points when the Anthropocene began, but concluded that the huge increase in the rates of human impacts between 1948 to 1953 may hold the greatest evidence to establish the 1950s as the origin point. During this brief time period, organic pollutants, microplastics, and byproducts of the nuclear age (i.e. plutonium and carbon-14) were first spotted. Moreover, these increased rates in 'anthropogenic fingerprints' uncovered in rock layers were found to be simultaneously occurring across the globe, which is indicative of a global scale shift. How is this finding relevant? Well, to this day, there still is no final agreement within the scientific community whether we're currently living in the Anthropocene, and this discovery clearly changes our perspective on the relationship between humans and the planet in the context of the long history of the Earth. With this knowledge, we can hopefully spread increased awareness to the public so we can develop policies that could reduce the impacts of human activities on the Earth system in order for the future generations to thrive in a safer environment. [8, 9]
Finally, the last article I've read was actually related to one of the training courses I took this week (Dr. Mendoza's Introduction to Satellites and Remote Sensing). Dr. Olly Bartlett, a remote sensing specialist from the University of Hertfordshire, together with his colleagues, used satellite imagery taken by Landsat from 1986-2021 to reveal a rapid change in land cover across the Antarctic peninsula. From less than a square kilometer of vegetal cover in 1986 to almost 12 km^2 in 2021, the region experienced an alarming rate of plant growth, particularly moss, during the four-decade time frame used in the study. What's more surprising is that the rate is significantly higher between the years 2016 and 2021. Further spread of moss would actually lead to a buildup of a soil layer that would provide a habitat for non-native (and potentially invasive) species of more complex plant life that would compete with the native species that are more adapted to the colder conditions of the region. It is to be emphasized that higher amounts of vegetation was caused potentially by the increasing global temperatures, with the Antarctic region experiencing the biggest increase in temperature (3°C) compared to what was observed across other parts of the planet since 1950 (which is oddly related to the previous article suggesting that the Anthropocene might have started during this time period). As native and non-native species compete for space and resources, most of the native plants would eventually be lost due to rapid changes in the Antarctic ecosystem, thereby implying species and biodiversity loss in the region. The authors suggested that the main driver of this landscape shift is most definitely the changes in the Antarctic climate. There are several opportunities for this research area, as this was actually the first study that looks at a regional scale. This study provides a 'baseline data' to further investigate the land cover change across the Antarctic region. It must be an exciting time for polar scientists! [10, 11]
C. Other areas of learning
I just finished last Monday (October 7) my I-don't-know-how-many-times-already re-watching of the Haikyuu!! anime, and I am still in awe with the many values portrayed within the different episodes. Values are generally the core principles by which we should live by, and the anime holds in its episodes values of passion, perseverance, determination, teamwork, and even how healthy competition could lead to immense growth (which is actually a concept of Darwinian evolution). I can't even begin to list down all the notes I took because of the shocking facets of my life that I see within the series.
I bought a secondhand MacBook Air (2015 model) from a friend and it's my first week of familiarizing myself with the Apple ecosystem. It was fun, and a little bit challenging in the first night and the next day, but eventually I got the hang of it. There are still several features I haven't encountered, but when I switched to a Windows platform yesterday (Sunday), my fingers were trying to adjust again due to some small differences in the positioning of keys. Switching between environments is one thing I have to get used to, but at least now we get to practice in case we decide to buy a newer model of the Mac in the near future.
Although this did not happen last week, but rather last October 6, I still would like to include how a friend who literally ghosted the entire friend group for five long years taught me about the true meaning of independence and how she actually embodied the word. I mean, she still had other groups of friends, but she was one of my closest friend during college (and I'd like to believe she considers us that way, too—hi Mai!), so I just got really shocked that that Sunday was her last day in the country! She moved to Japan the following day and I'm glad we've been in contact since. Talk about surprises, though, but really her story during the past five years really taught me a lot about independent life, and how you shouldn't really depend on others for your decisions, really. It's inspiring how she was just really set on doing things, and she accomplished it. I hope she's having a fun time there, though. She got a nice view of her apartment, after all!
I won't elaborate on this one but there is this video by Stephen Antonioni in YouTube about how the world is in the middle of something big, like a major global event (yes, the pandemic is just the beginning). Using three books, he discussed how the Earth in general is just stuck in cycles of 80-year periods, if I remember correctly, whereafter a major shift occurs, in the form of wars or economic depression. It was mind-boggling to say the least. [12]
Finally, one of the highlights of this week: the Nobel Prize [13] announced this year's winners! A lot of really well-deserved wins. Here's a succinct list:
Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine: Viktor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of the micro-RNA, a type of RNA involved in the regulation of gene expression.
Nobel Prize in Physics: John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks"
Nobel Prize in Chemistry: divided into 2, first to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half to both Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper for their research on protein folding which has its applications in the medical field!
South Korea gets their first Nobel Prize in Literature as Han Kang bags the award for her poetic prose that "confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life." I'll be sure to add her to my reading list!
Finally, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo for their advocacy on completely ridding the world of nuclear weapons.
Here are some of the music that kept me sane throughout the week:
Alat & Tupa, both by Munimuni
Nang Makita Kang Muli, a really short song by Unniko Ijo but got me thinking about the moon
The Fray's comeback EP! I mean, the entire EP is fire!
Multo by Cup of Joe
Kung Sino Man by Benj Pangilinan
Soup by Amiel Sol (I'm blushing!)
Hirap Kalimutan, a recent release from a new therapy artist: Jan Roberts
Satisfy Me by Anderson East: This was in my liked songs since college and the instrumentals and East's gritty voice still impresses me to this day!
Crying Season by UDD, just because! Note: I might release playlists soon in this blog!
Lastly, here are some realizations I've had this week from my captured thoughts:
You are capable of change—simple words that hold significant weight in my life right now. My gratitude journal entry last Tuesday read: "new day, new opportunities, new challenges, new you." Although the idea of novelty might scare some people, I am instead kept excited by it. Every day gives you a chance to live a completely different life than before if only you choose to, not that it requires you to (that would be exhausting!), and create a life you really want for yourself. There's this notion that because you were previously known by people around you as this and that, it means that you're eventually going to be like that all your life, unless of course, you leave the place or the people. But that, to me, is a lie. Everyday, new circumstances arise and you're being asked to respond differently depending on what that particular circumstance requires you to. But it's also a choice. You are capable of change, but you have to choose to change. Being aware of this allows you to explore opportunities you never thought possible, and plants within you an idea of how you are infinite, boundless; that you are capable of accomplishing great things regardless of your past. This eventually destroys the notion that you have to be perfect on the first try; it rejects perfectionism in such a way that you can actually revise your life over and over again, if you think that the current situation is not working. Yes, it is absolutely helpful to have a vision and values to guide how you live your life, but that doesn't mean that you can't adjust along the way. Our current circumstances require different things, and it is completely okay to modify your life track along the way, because simply, you are capable of it. It's scary and comforting and nerve-wracking all at once, but if you do not resist these changes, it might lead you to heights you never thought possible.
I am still in a healing phase, and that involves learning new things, re-learning old ways, and unlearning bad habits. Last Tuesday, I wasn't productive, really, so I assessed myself what was the primary reason for this reduced interest in doing productive work. What stood out was that I was so sleepy which points out to my lack of sleep the night before and the fact that I opened social media first thing that morning which added to more energy lost in things I do not enjoy. So I listened to myself that day, and actually took an afternoon nap, because what else can I do but rest? It's really important to find the right balance between being stern to yourself about the things you need to improve and being gentle when the situation requires you to. It doesn't hurt that a day wasn't spent on productive activities, but it certainly helps that you listen to how you feel when you're in a stage of transition within your life, especially coming from a place of burnout.
I wrote this last Friday, but I thought I was becoming too comfortable with the idea of platonic relationships and maybe I was losing the feeling of magic of romantic relationships. I don't know if it's a bad thing or a good thing, but it might be stemming from the fact that romance isn't in my list of priorities right now. It might be, in the future, but as of now, I am more entranced by the beauty I find in nature and the banal moments of daily living. That doesn't mean I don't get infatuated; in fact, I still do--the simplest thing could make my heart skip a beat. Like a reaction from an Instagram story, or a common ground in music taste, or the tiniest bit of attention given to me at the right moment. I'm not a robot, it's just dating might not be a central tenet of my life right now, and it's okay.
Lots of novel realizations with the Building a Second Brain (BASB) book, which I'll be making multiple separate articles soon! [14]
Finally, I started building my career portfolio through compiling my previous records, and systematizing an inbox of non-digital files which reflects my current PARA setup introduced by Tiago Forte in his BASB book to maintain uniformity with my workflow.
It's a long read, I know, but I'll try to keep it succinct in the future entries, or maybe I won't. This is basically my way of keeping track of my weeks in my life, summarized in journal-like entries.
That's it for the previous week, and this might just be my tagline: keep wandering and chase what excites you!

June 7th, Monday. Day 1 & 2 of 100.
I haven't touched a book that isn't my uni textbook in a year and after having a quarter-life crisis at the ripe old age of 21, I have decided to start reading again. I am currently 2/3 of the way through Demian by Hermann Hesse and I already adore this book. Going into it blind, I thought it would be a dark mythical fantasy sort of book but it was more like The Picture of Dorian Gray but instead of being a bastard (love you dorian), the main character Sinclair is a charming wreck that has an identity crisis every chapter and I enjoy every bit of it. Oh, and I wasn't sure if the author intended for all the romantic subtext about him towards Demian or if I was reading too much into it but it was a welcomed surprise. The excerpt above is from the same book and it just resonated with me a lot.
I also...
- Continued my Chinese learning
- Re-learned Data Structure and Algorithms ( because I took it in uni last year during the worst part of the pandemic and I couldn't focus and didn't do well in that module despite passing)
Hopefully this week is going to be just as productive and if anyone finds this post and feel motivated by it even just a bit, I wish you a productive week ahead as well!

I am currently taking APCS which doesn't have a textbook and I am not doing well. Mr. Billington doesn't return tests/quizzes back either so I can't even learn from my mistakes. Please suggest ways to study. I get full scores on my labs but I can't seem to do well with writing code using pencil and paper. Thanks.
Response from Parvati:
Hi! Fellow Billington APCS student here:D The tests are definitely the hardest part of APCS, especially the free response section can be pretty hard to conceive and write within the time frame. I've learned a few ways that help me to study, and I'll share them below! If anyone else wants to add other strategies they've found, feel free to add on.
- use the debugger! a lot of the free response is often similar to previous labs we've done. Before a test, I'll usually just use the debugger to see how my code works again in case I forgot
- continued practice of implementation of the current topic over and over. I know we do practice it in class, but just practicing it out of class with practiceIt and codingBat help me fully understand ways we can implement the data structure. Often, there are very common ways to traverse through a data structure that are repeated, so practicing more and recognizing those can help you write similar code quicker.
- write pseudocode and draw on the paper! I don't use this one too much, but it helps some people. You have the paper right there, so if it helps you, take use of it! Take whatever notes you want on the class given, circle the fields to remind you to use them, and literally anything else. Use the paper to help you. Also, if it's a data structure, track how it should look through different stages of your code. What should happen first, last? This helps you order things and figure out what you need to do. Also, if you're running out of time, Mr. Billington will award you some points for pseudocode.
- write the base cases first - do this even if you're running out of time. Often almost half the points come from the base cases. Plus, they help you narrow the scope of what you have to write
- read the problem all the way through. I'm guilty of my attention lapsing halfway through reading the like 3 paragraphs we're given before actually coding the thing, but it is really important to read the whole thing and the comments above each method. Often they provide an algorithm or a more specific hint toward the direction you need to go.
- read through all the old assignment sheets before the tests! All the information is on these and often having seen something specific on paper stops me from second-guessing myself.
Sorry this is long, hopefully it helped though!

college woes
i was talking to a friend who's also a cs major today and she was asking me why i don't like coding anymore and to be honest i don't really know if i ever really did like coding. like it is really relaxing and when i was struggling in my classes for my other major i would code to calm down but it doesn't excite me and i think maybe that's why i don't care a lot about my cs classes outside of getting a decent grade (also realized that everyone in my lab section had already teamed up and now it feels awkward to join in another group and i think my cs teacher who's also my advisor knows but she's just not saying anything and i missed the due date for the last week's lab because i misunderstood or maybe i just didn't care so i'm dying because there's no turn in on the site and i haven't even started lab 3 which requires a write-up apparently and most people are working in groups again so i don't want to get involved with this. i'm just going to try emailing her my lab tomorrow when i make sure that my circuit works but i don't know because i suck at hardware but i did the logic diagram on a site that tests it so it should work if i can implement it correctly or just make an appointment with my teacher to tell her what's going on which means telling her that i've been avoiding people in the class when i should have been working with someone but everyone else knew each other so it was just awkward so how do i even say that. god i need to set up an appointment with her except she never answers her emails so who knows if she'll even see it before tuesday).
i really want to feel passionate about what i'm learning and i think that i definitely enjoy classics and i do enjoy aspects of coding and i feel that what i would want to do in the future is work in archiving at a museum when i graduate but it just feels like it won't happen. my other advisor told me i would be a competitive applicant because not a lot of people are classics/cs majors but i don't know because i don't have a lot of archiving experience or even a lot of technical experience so i need to get an internship this summer so i can at least really see what the work environment is like instead of just working in retail again but i like earning money and it's easy even though people are mean but i know i really need to push myself.
i feel like the other thing is that i like the algorithms and data structures in cs more than i actually like coding because it just interests me more so maybe i should have just been a cs minor instead but at this point it doesn't even matter and i just need to get through systems and then 4 more cs courses and i'll be done with the major
i don't want it to stress me out too much but it does and my gpa can afford if i get a B in any of my classes this semester but i really don't want to and i feel like it'll be a struggle to get a B in systems and then have to take operating systems which is even harder and requires really good knowledge of systems to do well so i need to really get this material but it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me and it's so hard to read the textbook because i have to reread it to even know what it's talking about sooooo
and latin and greek right now is fine and i like my other class about museum history a lot even though i know that i'm not the best student because writing isn't my strong point but i like the topic a lot and the teacher is nice. i want to get better though but my thoughts just spill out and i can't word them all properly so the teacher understands them as well as i do so maybe i should make an appointment with that teacher to talk about what i need to do to get betterr (also not sure if i even organized that last assignment correctly)
i'm coping with my uncertainties in my classes right now by telling myself that it's still early on so if i start getting the material and doing better that even if i do poorly in the beginning it won't mean a lot because i can still bring my grade up so hopefully that'll be true and if i talk to my teachers i hope that they'll help me and not make me drop the classes before the end of the term because i'm really trying and i want that to mean something without having me spend nights just studying to get a passing grade

How a Guy From a Montana Trailer Park Overturned 150 Years of Biology
We here at the lichenloglichenblog encourage you to read this.
Biology textbooks tell us that lichens are alliances between two organisms—a fungus and an alga. They are wrong.
ED YONG, JUL 21, 2016 SCIENCE
In 1995, if you had told Toby Spribille that he’d eventually overthrow a scientific idea that’s been the stuff of textbooks for 150 years, he would have laughed at you. Back then, his life seemed constrained to a very different path. He was raised in a Montana trailer park, and home-schooled by what he now describes as a “fundamentalist cult.” At a young age, he fell in love with science, but had no way of feeding that love. He longed to break away from his roots and get a proper education.
At 19, he got a job at a local forestry service. Within a few years, he had earned enough to leave home. His meager savings and non-existent grades meant that no American university would take him, so Spribille looked to Europe.
Thanks to his family background, he could speak German, and he had heard that many universities there charged no tuition fees. His missing qualifications were still a problem, but one that the University of Gottingen decided to overlook. “They said that under exceptional circumstances, they could enroll a few people every year without transcripts,” says Spribille. “That was the bottleneck of my life.”
Throughout his undergraduate and postgraduate work, Spribille became an expert on the organisms that had grabbed his attention during his time in the Montana forests—lichens.
You’ve seen lichens before, but unlike Spribille, you may have ignored them. They grow on logs, cling to bark, smother stones. At first glance, they look messy and undeserving of attention. On closer inspection, they are astonishingly beautiful. They can look like flecks of peeling paint, or coralline branches, or dustings of powder, or lettuce-like fronds, or wriggling worms, or cups that a pixie might drink from. They’re also extremely tough. They grow in the most inhospitable parts of the planet, where no plant or animal can survive.
Lichens have an important place in biology. In the 1860s, scientists thought that they were plants. But in 1868, a Swiss botanist named Simon Schwendener revealed that they’re composite organisms, consisting of fungi that live in partnership with microscopic algae. This “dual hypothesis” was met with indignation: it went against the impetus to put living things in clear and discrete buckets. The backlash only collapsed when Schwendener and others, with good microscopes and careful hands, managed to tease the two partners apart.
Schwendener wrongly thought that the fungus had “enslaved” the alga, but others showed that the two cooperate. The alga uses sunlight to make nutrients for the fungus, while the fungus provides minerals, water, and shelter. This kind of mutually beneficial relationship was unheard of, and required a new word. Two Germans, Albert Frank and Anton de Bary, provided the perfect one—symbiosis, from the Greek for ‘together’ and ‘living’.
“That was the eureka moment. That’s when I leaned back in my chair.”
When we think about the microbes that influence the health of humans and other animals, the algae that provide coral reefs with energy, the mitochondria that power our cells, the gut bacteria that allow cows to digest their food, or the probiotic products that line supermarket shelves—all of that can be traced to the birth of the symbiosis as a concept. And symbiosis, in turn, began with lichens.
In the 150 years since Schwendener, biologists have tried in vain to grow lichens in laboratories. Whenever they artificially united the fungus and the alga, the two partners would never fully recreate their natural structures. It was as if something was missing—and Spribille might have discovered it.
He has shown that largest and most species-rich group of lichens are not alliances between two organisms, as every scientist since Schwendener has claimed. Instead, they’re alliances between three. All this time, a second type of fungus has been hiding in plain view.
“There’s been over 140 years of microscopy,” says Spribille. “The idea that there’s something so fundamental that people have been missing is stunning.”
The path to this discovery began in 2011, when Spribille, now armed with a doctorate, returned to Montana. He joined the lab of symbiosis specialist John McCutcheon, who convinced him to supplement his formidable natural history skills with some know-how in modern genetics.
The duo started studying two local lichens that are common in local forests and hang from branches like unruly wigs. One is yellow because it makes a strong poison called vulpinic acid; the other lacks this toxin and is dark brown. They clearly look different, and had been classified as separate species for almost a century. But recent studies had suggested that they’re actually the same fungus, partnered with the same alga. So why are they different?
To find out, Spribille analyzed which genes the two lichens were activating. He found no differences. Then, he realized that he was searching too narrowly. Lichenologists all thought that the fungi in the partnership belonged to a group called the ascomycetes—so Spribille had only searched for ascomycete genes. Almost on a whim, he broadened his search to the entire fungal kingdom, and found something bizarre. A lot of the genes that were activated in the lichens belonged to a fungus from an entirely different group—the basidiomycetes. “That didn’t look right,” says McCutcheon. “It took a lot of time to figure out.”
At first, the duo figured that a basidiomycete fungus was growing on the lichens. Perhaps it was just a contaminant, a speck of microbial fluff that had landed on the specimens. Or it might have been a pathogen, a fungus that was infecting the lichens and causing disease. It might simply have been a false alarm. (Such things happen: genetic algorithms have misidentified plague bacteria on the New York subway, platypuses in Virginia tomato fields, and seals in Vietnamese forests.)
But when Spribille removed all the basidiomycete genes from his data, everything that related to the presence of vulpinic acid also disappeared. “That was the eureka moment,” he says. “That’s when I leaned back in my chair.” That’s when he began to suspect that the basidiomycete was actually part of the lichens—present in both types, but especially abundant in the yellow toxic one.
“Toby took huge risks for many years. And he changed the field.”
And not just in these two types, either. Throughout his career, Spribille had collected some 45,000 samples of lichens. He began screening these, from many different lineages and continents. And in almost all the macrolichens—the world’s most species-rich group—he found the genes of basidiomycete fungi. They were everywhere. Now, he needed to see them with his own eyes.
Down a microscope, a lichen looks like a loaf of ciabatta: it has a stiff, dense crust surrounding a spongy, loose interior. The alga is embedded in the thick crust. The familiar ascomycete fungus is there too, but it branches inwards, creating the spongy interior. And the basidiomycetes? They’re in the outermost part of the crust, surrounding the other two partners. “They’re everywhere in that outer layer,” says Spribille.
Despite their seemingly obvious location, it took around five years to find them. They’re embedded in a matrix of sugars, as if someone had plastered over them. To see them, Spribille bought laundry detergent from Wal-Mart and used it to very carefully strip that matrix away.
And even when the basidiomycetes were exposed, they weren’t easy to identify. They look exactly like a cross-section from one of the ascomycete branches. Unless you know what you’re looking for, there’s no reason why you’d think there are two fungi there, rather than one—which is why no one realised for 150 years. Spribille only worked out what was happening by labeling each of the three partners with different fluorescent molecules, which glowed red, green, and blue respectively. Only then did the trinity become clear.
“The findings overthrow the two-organism paradigm,” says Sarah Watkinson from the University of Oxford. “Textbook definitions of lichens may have to be revised.”
“It makes lichens all the more remarkable,” adds Nick Talbot from the University of Exeter. “We now see that they require two different kinds of fungi and an algal species. If the right combination meet together on a rock or twig, then a lichen will form, and this will result in the large and complex plant-like organisms that we see on trees and rocks very commonly.  The mechanism by which this symbiotic association occurs is completely unknown and remains a real mystery.”
Based on the locations of the two fungi, it’s possible that the basidiomycete influences the growth of the other fungus, inducing it to create the lichen’s stiff crust. Perhaps by using all three partners, lichenologists will finally be able to grow these organisms in the lab.
In the Montana lichens that Spribille studied, the basidiomycete obviously goes hand-in-hand with vulpinic acid. But is it eating the acid, manufacturing it, or unlocking the ability to make it in the other fungus? If it’s the latter, “the implications go beyond lichenology,” says Watkinson. Lichens are alluring targets for ‘bioprospectors’, who scour nature for substances that might be medically useful to us. And new basidiomycetes are part of an entirely new group, separated from their closest known relatives by 200 million years ago. All kinds of beneficial chemicals might lie within their cells.
“But really, we don’t know what they do,” says McCutcheon. “And given their existence, we don’t really know what the ascomycetes do, either.” Everything that’s been attributed to them might actually be due to the other fungus. Many of the fundamentals of lichenology will need to be checked, and perhaps re-written. “Toby took huge risks for many years,” says McCutcheon. “And he changed the field.”
But he didn’t work alone, Watkinson notes. His discovery wouldn’t have been possible without the entire team, who combined their individual expertise in natural history, genomics, microscopy, and more. That’s a theme that resonates throughout the history of symbiosis research—it takes an alliance of researchers to uncover nature’s most intimate partnerships.

8 Books for Getting Started With Computer Vision
Computer vision is a subfield of artificial intelligence concerned with understanding the content of digital images, such as photographs and videos.
Deep learning has made impressive inroads on challenging computer vision tasks and makes the promise of further advances.
Before diving into the application of deep learning techniques to computer vision, it may be helpful to develop a foundation in computer vision more broadly. This may include the foundational and classical techniques, theory, and even basic data handling with standard APIs.
One of the best ways to get up to speed quickly with the field is to get a book on the topic.
In this post, you will discover the top textbooks and programmer books on computer vision.
Let’s get started.
Overview
This post is divided into three parts; they are:
Top 5 Computer Vision Textbooks
Top 3 Computer Vision Programmer Books
Recommendations
Top 5 Computer Vision Textbooks
Textbooks are those books written by experts, often academics, and are designed to be used as a reference for students and practitioners.
They focus mainly on general methods and theory (math), not on the practical concerns of problems and the application of methods (code).
I gathered a list of the top five textbooks based on their usage in university courses at top schools (e.g. MIT, etc.) and recommendations on discussion websites (e.g. Quora, etc.).
The top five textbooks on computer vision are as follows (in no particular order):
Computer Vision: Algorithms and Applications, 2010.
Computer Vision: Models, Learning, and Inference, 2012.
Computer Vision: A Modern Approach, 2002.
Introductory Techniques for 3-D Computer Vision, 1998.
Multiple View Geometry in Computer Vision, 2004.
Let’s take a closer look at each in turn, including the target audience and table of contents for each book.
Computer Vision: Algorithms and Applications
This book was written by Richard Szeliski and published in 2010.
Computer Vision: Algorithms and Applications
A draft version of the book in PDF format is available from the book’s homepage.
I like this book. It provides a strong foundation for beginners (undergraduates) in computer vision techniques for a wide range of standard computer vision problems. The book was developed by Richard based on his years of experience teaching the topic at the University of Washington.
This book also reflects my 20 years’ experience doing computer vision research in corporate research labs […] I have mostly focused on problems and solution techniques (algorithms) that have practical real-world applications and that work well in practice. Thus, this book has more emphasis on basic techniques that work under real-world conditions and less on more esoteric mathematics that has intrinsic elegance but less practical applicability.

Computer Vision: Models, Learning, and Inference
This book was written by Simon Prince and published in 2012.
Computer Vision: Models, Learning, and Inference
A draft version of the book is available on the book’s website in PDF format.
This is a great introductory book (for students) and covers a wide range of computer vision techniques and problems. The book takes more time to introduce computer vision and spends useful time on foundational topics related to probabilistic modeling.
This modern treatment of computer vision focuses on learning and inference in probabilistic models as a unifying theme. It shows how to use training data to learn the relationships between the observed image data and the aspects of the world that we wish to estimate, such as the 3D structure or the object class, and how to exploit these relationships to make inferences about the world from new image data.

Computer Vision: A Modern Approach
This book was written by David Forsyth and Jean Ponce and published in 2011.
Computer Vision: A Modern Approach
This is an introductory textbook on computer vision and is perhaps more broad in the topics covered than many of the other textbooks. Although broad, it may be less loved (popular) than some of the other introductory text as it can be challenging to read: it dives right in.
… vision relies on a solid understanding of cameras and of the physical process of image formation (Part I of this book) to obtain simple inferences from individual pixel values (Part II), combine the information available in multiple images into a coherent whole (Part III), impose some order on groups of pixels to separate them from each other or infer shape information (Part IV), and recognize objects using geometric information or probabilistic techniques (Part V).

Top 3 Computer Vision Programmer Books
Programmer books are playbooks (e.g. O’Reilly books) written by experts, often developers and engineers, and are designed to be used as a reference by practitioners.
They focus mainly on techniques and the practical concerns of problem solving with a focus on example code and standard libraries. Techniques may be described briefly with relevant theory (math) but should probably not be used as a primary reference.
I’ve gathered a list of the top three playbooks based on their rank ordering in lists of top computer vision books and on recommendations on discussion websites.
The top three textbooks on computer vision are as follows (in no particular order):
Learning OpenCV 3, 2017.
Programming Computer Vision with Python, 2012.
Practical Computer Vision with SimpleCV, 2012.
Let’s take a closer look at each in turn, including the target audience and table of contents for each book.
Learning OpenCV 3
This book was written by Adrian Kaehler and Gary Bradski and published in 2017. The subtitle of the book is “Computer Vision in C++ with the OpenCV Library.”
Learning OpenCV 3
The book focuses on teaching you how to use the OpenCV library, perhaps the premiere open source computer vision library. All code examples are in C++, suggesting that the target audience are professional developers looking to learn how to incorporate computer vision into their applications. Importantly, the authors are board members and founders of OpenCV.
It is a technical book and perhaps more an elaborated API documentation than a playbook.
This book provides a working guide to the C++ Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV) version 3.x and gives a general background on the field of computer vision sufficient to help readers use OpenCV effectively.
— Learning OpenCV 3, 2017.
This book may be considered an updated version of the older (2008) book Learning “OpenCV: Computer Vision with the OpenCV Library” by the same authors.

Programming Computer Vision with Python
This book was written by Jan Erik Solem and published in 2012. The subtitle for the book is “Tools and algorithms for analyzing images.”
Programming Computer Vision with Python
A final draft version of the book is available from the book’s website in PDF format.
This is a hands-on book that focuses on teaching you how to perform basic computer vision tasks in Python, mostly with PIL, although with a basic introduction to OpenCV as well. I’m a fan of this book, although minor modifications are required to use updated libraries (e.g. Pillow). An update to this book is due!
The idea behind this book is to give an easily accessible entry point to hands-on computer vision with enough understanding of the underlying theory and algorithms to be a foundation for students, researchers, and enthusiasts.

Practical Computer Vision With SimpleCV
This book was written by Kurt DeMaagd, Anthony Oliver, Nathan Oostendorp, and Katherine Scott, and was published in 2012. The subtitle of the book is “The Simple Way to Make Technology See.”
Practical Computer Vision with SimpleCV
This book teaches you how to perform basic computer vision operations using the SimpleCV library in Python. This provides a nice alternative to working with PIL (Pillow) or OpenCV, although I’m not convinced that SimpleCV has been broadly adopted (I’m happy to be proven wrong).
Learn how to build your own computer vision (CV) applications quickly and easily with SimpleCV, an open source framework written in Python. Through examples of real-world applications, this hands-on guide introduces you to basic CV techniques for collecting, processing, and analyzing streaming digital images.

Recommendations
I love books and am reading a few different books at any one time. As such, I own all of the books listed in this post.
Nevertheless, if I was forced to recommend one textbook and one playbook, my recommendations would be as follows:
Recommended Textbook
Computer Vision: Algorithms and Applications, Richard Szeliski, 2010.
I recommend this book because it provides a short, focused, and very readable introduction to computer vision with relevant theory, without getting too bogged down. Straight to the point and a useful reference text.
Recommended Programmer Book
Programming Computer Vision with Python, Jan Erik Solem, 2012.
I recommend this book because it focuses on real computer vision techniques with standard (or close enough) Python libraries. It’s an excellent starting point for getting your hands dirty in computer vision.

The 7 Common Stereotypes When It Comes To SEO 2019
Professional SEO solutions can lift your site over your competition. Without the doubt, one of the greatest trends that has already started to take place and may continue well into 2018 may be the consolidation of niche MarTech gamers by larger content cloud suppliers, with the role and significance of SEO increasing significantly all through this transformation. SEO Internet marketing offers major components, which develop the particular website traffic, and top research engine rankings. SEO is brief for Seo, and there is usually nothing really mystical about this particular. You might have heard the lot about SEO and exactly how it works, but basically exactly what is a measurable, repeatable procedure which is used to deliver signals to search engines that will the pages are worth displaying in Google's index. Topic clusters have got been lauded because the future associated with SEO and content strategy, yet are widely underreported on (so now's the time to hit! ) 93% of B2B companies use content marketing. Teresa Walsh, Marketing Professional at automobile site, Cazana, forecasts that hyper organic targeting will increase its importance in 2019 with more location search plus more voice search. We get to the particular bottom of on-page SEO issues in order for search motors to clearly see what your own website is all about. SEO requires you to continuously become a student because of exactly how quickly the algorithms of research engine companies change. Google's punishing methods probably class pages as some thing akin to a poor UX if they meet certain detectable criteria e. g. lack associated with reputation or old-school SEO stuff such as keyword stuffing a site. The traditional strategy to SEO has been devoted to creating excellent content that will is easily searchable via research engine bots. To realize SEO, you'll also need in order to know how Google search functions. 2019 will certainly still use many of all these newly implemented tactics, but research engine optimization experts are likewise suggesting there will be a lot more. Currently more than half associated with searches account for mobile products, and the number will definitely proceed up in 2019. Within the remaining 2018 quarter, a person need to invest in mobile-first content that will rank a person higher in mobile search within 2019. The vast majority of your SEO learning ought to come from online resources, yet there are a few textbooks that will help you conceptually understand the history of research, search engines, and how SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION has changed through the yrs. There are numerous methods that webmasters use within order to entice potential clients to their site—one of the particular most important and effective associated with those being Seo (SEO).
