How It Started W/ CSM Characters #2 [Gender Neutral Character]
Hey! Thanks for waiting for this next post, finals have been killing me :'). Don't forget that you can request scenarios. I hope you enjoy it! Denji
Tumblr media
Denji has been a lonely dude since losing everyone he cared for working for Public Safety.
He shuffles along with his depressing school life not expecting anything to come out. During his lunchtime, he eats alone and scrounges around hoping to find anything valuable to sell
If you were to ask Denji what he does at school, he wouldn’t be able to remember in the slightest
Today is a normal, boring day of school with Denji making 500 Yen from letting girls sit on him
During his lunch break you walk up to him as he finishes his lunch
He assumes you want to use him as a seat so it surprises him when you sit beside him.
When the two of you start talking, he immediately starts to feel things for you since no one has paid him this much attention Before the conversation ends, Denji decides to make the move by asking you out on a date (Bro moves a bit quickly)
You accept much to his surprise and plan to go to the movie theater to watch several movies
It’s the day of the date and you meet him outside of the movie theater
During the movies, you constantly talk to him about the movies that you’re watching because you love analyzing the movies you watch
Denji has no idea half of what you’re saying but he likes talking to you about the movies
Once the date is over, you two leave the theater and he drops you off at your apartment, mind rushing with more ideas of dates to go on
Aki
Tumblr media
As someone who was more emotionally invested in avenging his family, he hardly had much time to consider finding a partner
He had Himeno as a great friend but since she’s out of the picture (dead as hell), he’s pretty much emotionally alone
He had been anxious to meet the new members of Division 4 mainly due to his trauma
You were probably one of the most promising of the newbies, being the one who was easiest to train
After Division 4 defeats the Katana man and Akane Sawatari, you guys go out to celebrate the victory
This is where you and him begin to hit it off as friends.
Of course, he’s a bit distant but after a few patrols with the guy he becomes a bit friendlier
You quit devil hunting to get a job that’s less dangerous but still stay in touch with Aki
After the international Devil Hunter arc you go to check up on Aki to make sure that he’s doing alright
After that point, you practically move into his apartment to give him a helping hand :) with everything like cooking and cleaning
This is when Aki starts to truly understand how he feels about you and asks you out
He asks you to go everywhere with him as you are his home away from home
When Aki tells Kishibe about quitting being a devil hunter, he thinks of Denji and Power, but most importantly, he thinks about a future with you.
Today is a relaxing day where you decide to sleep in.
Aki takes this as an opportunity to meet up with Angel and go to meet Makima at the beach on a nice sunny day

— konoha as your boyfriend.
Tumblr media
sigh... can’t resist him for long. tsk tsk. hope you enjoy
waiting for konoha world domination.
PATIENTLY waiting because how could you not fall in love with this man?
anyways, it’s about that time for boyfriend konoha to make his debut here.
won’t get too deep with the crush phase but let’s talk about it for a second.
aki is the kind of guy who’s bold when it comes to crushes, or you in this case.
doesn’t believe in giving mixed signals since he knows what he wants and clearly it’s you.
also isn’t the type who starts acting funny/avoids you or struggle with trying to befriend you (if you two had been strangers and konoha had one of those ‘love at first sight’ moments.)
yet in this route, you two are actually good friends and he found out had a crush on you when thoughts of you kept clouding his mind along with how he no other person could keep his interest romantically except you.
didn’t rush himself on telling you how he felt towards you. rather, he decided to let things flow just in case his mind and heart were playing a trick on him.
when konoha is ready then he’ll most likely dropped the biggest hits that he wants you.
definitely made more time for you whenever you asked to hang out, didn’t hesitate to reject others and make it known to them that you had his full attention either, and always complimented you more as well.
he finally asked you out when going out to watch fireworks together.
the confession wasn’t tooth rotting sweet yet it wasn’t dry as the desert either. konoha had planned his words perfectly and told you exactly how he felt towards you before asking “will you be mine?”
of course that night led to you two being together now~
which brings us to how the relationship is like.
for starters, i firmly believe akinori is the kind of boyfriend who wears hair ties/scrunches on his wrist for you.
he never knows when you might ask or text him about needing one so he keeps it on him just in case.
doesn’t care if some dudes get on him for it either. same with friends.
in aki’s mind at least he thinks what he does is normal and deems himself as a good boyfriend for it.
most definitely likes getting his nails done with you or by you.
if you mention going to the nail salon, best believe your boyfriend is tagging along and getting his done.
although the first few times he went with, aki went for clear nail polish because he wasn’t ready for color yet.
only started going for it for when you jokingly said you two should get matching nail colors and he was like “yeah. sounds good with me.”
and didn’t mind it. actually fell in love with the concept.
as for home, if you’re bored and just want to play pretend nail tech then aki is already sitting at your little set up ready.
“make my nails look extra pretty, princess. i want to show them off later and brag about how you did them.”
“of course~ since you said that, i’ll add a design on them. my initials.”
“sounds better than doing plain. think i can get a heart too?”
“mhm!”
i FIRMLY believe he’s also the kind of boyfriend who lets you use his face to do makeup looks you saw online.
although he may complain sometimes, deep down he actually loves it since he gets to stare at you up close and find amusement with how focus you are about making sure the look comes out just like the picture.
“close your eyes aki. please”
“then i can’t see you.”
“you’ll see when i’m done. now close your eyes unless you want eyeliner in them.”
“fine fine.”
vvv  supportive and uplifting. konoha loves and i mean LOVES the idea of being there for you, helping you out whenever he can as well.
the relationship is filled with jokes. mainly a lot of inside jokes that outsiders find it so odd— even going as far to question what some mean, but ofc none of you talk about it.
konoha wasn’t into face care/didn’t think much of it before he met you.
so if you’re someone who LOVES face care or generally taking care of your skin then you definitely changed his mind.
dude will indulge in your little spa nights at home. asking you what each products does for his skin and what some do to yours (assuming you two have different skin types).
will definitely take pictures of moments like those and make them his lock screen because he finds its cute even those the face mask on you both looks hella weird.
loves LOVES spoiling you.
whether it’ll be with actual gifts, physical affections (which is limited) or his words— he’ll spoil you without hesitation.
konoha enjoys the concept of making it known he’s truly in love with you and doesn’t plan on stopping either.
also loves when you spoil him too.
something about you doing it makes his heart and mind do about 2937748 backflips and laps around the track.
don’t know if this will make sense, but aki still likes to woo you over as if you’re still in the beginning stage of dating when you two aren’t anymore.
suppose this can be labeled as him just being extremely affectionate which i strongly agree that he is but it’s only around you.
it’s been hinted at during the crush part, but i’ll make it known now— he’s extremely loyal to you.
ever since aki decided to commit himself to you.
which is rare due to the fact that commit to him is something that shouldn’t be handed to just anyone. even in previous relationships, he never really gave much of it since he’ll either notice things about that partner that were hidden (by that partner), he just isn’t into them anymore due to lost of feeling or things seeming boring.
so any thoughts of konoha cheating or looking at anyone else is impossible. his heart belongs to you and only you <3
something to quickly add.. arguments with him are extremely rare.
aki isn’t into conflict so he’ll do everything in his power to avoid.
however, if it still occurs then he’ll end up speaking his mind without filtering himself. now that can either put out the fire or fuel it even more. truly depends on how you take it, but if it gets worst then apologizes will be issued in a means to fix it.
anyways— can’t convince me this man doesn’t binge watch those weird videos that are recommended to you on YouTube or any of your favorite shows and/or movies on Netflix with you.
sticking by that statement because it’s true.
now let’s quickly talk about nicknames, pda, and dates.
starting with nicknames, i’ve mentioned one but aki main nicknames for you: princess, my love, gorgeous, juliet (after romeo and juliet. it started off as a joke to call each other that but now it stays), and peach.
pda with konoha isn’t much.
in public and private, it’s just the basic. private may be a little more ahead depending on how aki is feeling, but it’s not much.
not because he doesn’t like your touch since he does yet physical affection just isn’t something that gets his interest most of the time.
so don’t take it personally when he doesn’t want to do much, but i’m sure if you beg a little then he’ll give in.
with that out the way— time to talk about dates.
dates with him range from almost anything and everything.
konoha is someone that is adventurous and likes change once in awhile so of course that’s going to incorporate itself within dates.
although do except picture to be taken while on those dates. aki finds it heartwarming to capture those moments together and he can always look back at them if you are far each other.
can’t think of much so i’ll call this the end.
overall: a relationship with konoha is enjoyable. things are always changing within the relationship so it never turns boring.
you’re the luckiest person ever to date this cutie <3

Makeno/Akimax headcanons PT2
Tumblr media
So I'm back with more headcanons, hope you all like it (plz don't be so hard on me, English is not my first language so if you see any mistakes please let me know😭🖐🏻)
This one is kinda long since I wrote some back story to support the headcanons, it's not accurate at all but let me dream🚶🏻‍♀️This time is from Max's point of view
Whenever people try to figure out who fell first, it comes as a surprise that Aki giggles and Max gets flustered all of the sudden. Max Wolfe, oh lord, he has been deeply in love with Akeno Menzies since they were little kids. Later did he understood that in fact, he liked Aki, no, that wasn't accurate at all, he loved Aki.
But as he grew older he realized Aki was just, so pure, he couldn't bear the thought of corrupting him with all his mess so when Audrey confessed him that she wanted to date Aki since he would look great by her side, Max just slip a dirty joke and let them be.
When he first slept with Audrey he was really hoping she felt guilty enough to confess what she did to Aki and then they would break up -he didn't even liked Audrey, he just wanted to fuck things up with her relationship- but when finally gave the situation some thought, he was already in bed with the pink haired boy and yes, Audrey. God, he wanted to end things quickly with her tonight so she would just get bored and go to read one of those annoying novels she was always talking about.
After the threesome, Max was so sure he didn't want to spend more time sharing Aki; he knew someone as kind and loving as Akeno wouldn't want to be tied with someone as Max. He ghosted Audrey when she texted him for another round of sex and he disappeared from Aki's sight soon after this. Max tried to go back to his old lifestyle- God knows he tried- but as soon someone tried to kiss him under the neon lights of some fancy club, he felt sick, Jesus, he felt as if he were cheating Aki. Max just went home that night.
He was sleeping (not really, he was thinking about a certain boy with dark lashes, ethereal brown eyes and bubblegum pink hair) when he heard someone knocking at his door, he wasn't in the mood for late night sex or drugs
-jesus, it's 4am, who the fuck knocks at 4am?- he groaned as he opened the door but he stopped middle sentence when he see Akeno right in front of him, this was the last straw, he didn't care about Audrey, he didn't care about their lovely relationship and he certainly did not give a fuck about what people might say when they find out Max has been in love with Aki all this time.
But Aki is the first one to confess his feelings without hesitation, that night he let Aki into his house and stay over (he could say something cheesy like he also let Aki get into his heart but he has been there for years, growing into all the lovely shades of pink Max could ever imagine)
A couple of weeks later they reveal to the group they are in fact, dating. It is not a revelation at all, Max has been asking Luna and Monet for the perfect way of saying "I love you" to a certain someone who loves romantic movies, is a huge fan of skateboarding and has a weird fascination with airports. It doesn't take a genius to know Aki fit the description perfectly, so when Monet casually says to Aki that his boyfriend is being a pain in the ass, he just blushes and tries to ask how she knows but he just tells her "He told me he is doing some investigation about something, usual Max stuff" he says softly as he smiles.
Two days later, Max takes Aki to the airport and tries to say the three words, eight letters thing but he is stumbling with his own words -Aki deserves the world, he deserves an award winning love confession-
Aki just looks at him confused and tries to hold his hand but Max just runs to the end of the corridor leaving Aki standing alone in the middle of the hallway, the passengers were looking at him pitifully imagining he got dumped, but then a song started playing from the speakers and Max appeared from the end of the corridor singing cheerfully.
"You're just too good to be true, can't take my eyes off of you" he sang loudly as he pointed his finger to Aki "You'd be like heaven to touch, I wanna hold you so much"
People in the background were recording the whole thing, being amazed by Max Wolfe singing in the middle of an airport. Aki knew this would be in every single newspaper, his dad will be asking him questions and subtly judging him,but for once Aki felt like he could breathe freely; he had nothing to be ashamed of.
As Max was singing, he came closer to Aki until they could hear each other heartbeat; people noticed it was a private moment between the two boys and let them standing alone in the middle of the hallway.
"I love you, baby" Max muttered while he caressed Aki's cheek "And if it's quite alright I need you, baby"
Aki smiled and Max stopped singing, looking at him full of love "I have never thought I was a romantic nor did I thought I would be singing in the middle of the airport" he said "But your shades of pink have coloured my heart and your name has filled my senses Akeno"
He held Aki's face with both of his hands "I'm deeply in love with Akeno Menzies"

On Love
So as you know I made this uquiz with an open-ended question at the end, tell me something about love, and I’ve gotten the most wonderful responses! They range from descriptions of wonderful partners:
Lauren: oh, how long I went without being myself until I met him and he showed me who I truly was and that my worth was higher than I ever thought was possible
Levi: I love who we are with each other. I love who I am with you. In your company I am me. In your company I am the best of me. The best with the best, I've told you. I wouldn't give you up for anything
Daniel: i fell in love for the first time when i was 17... at the time, i didn’t realize it was the first time, i thought i’d been in love before, a couple times actually, but falling in love at 17 was such a fulfilling experience, it felt so forceful yet so right. it’s when i first truly understood what love was. never before had i felt so understood and so cared for as i did when i was in love with her, and she was in love with me. it’s been nearly 4 years since then, and nearly 3 years since we broke up and stopped talking, and still, i think about her almost every day. i’ve never known anyone like her; to me, she was love itself.
El: oh i’m in love with everyone that i know op!!! especially my girlfriend, of course ,but also my friends and my family and random people on the street and uh
Grace: i’ve met my soulmate and we plan on getting an apartment and marrying after college
A: I’m going to ask the woman I love to marry me and I just wanted to tell someone because I am so excited
Jeremy: you ever have that feeling where basically after years of denying that someone couldnt understand you in a way or love you and then the next thing you know you happen to find that person and its just great from then on out? idk how to explain it anyways I love my boyfriend so much he means the world to me
Lucy: i am so happy i have found the one i love
to descriptions of best friends and favorite people:
Nightbyrd: Love is a hug from an alzheimer's patient who hasn't the foggiest idea who you are, but they know you're worth hugging.
H: I have been doing so much yoga with my roommate recently!! It's a great way to center my mind for an hour
Riv: [platonic] i’ve literally never met anyone who understands me in the way that my best friends do. they’re literally the best people in the whole world and i genuinely don’t know what i’d do without them. i love them with my whole heart
Cillian: when i talk about how much i love my best friend i get so teary eyed because i cant believe that such a genuinely wonderful person wants to speak to me every day - i care for her more than anyone else on this planet
O: my two besties are my sources of happiness and they’re so pretty i would die for them :D
to beautiful quotes:
Kai: "you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on." DARCYYYY PLS MY HEART CANT HANDLW THIS PAIN
Dorian: When the plane went down in San Francisco, I thought of my friend M. He’s obsessed with plane crashes. He memorizes the wrecked metal details, ____the clear cool skies cut by black scars of smoke. Once, while driving, he told me about all the crashes: The one in blue Kentucky, in yellow Iowa. How people go on, and how people don’t. It was almost a year before I learned that his brother was a pilot. I can’t help it, I love the way men love. (accident report in the tall, tall weeds- ada limon, bright dead things)
Adam: every day I think about lemony snicket I will love you if I never see you again I will love you if I see you every Tuesday or however it goes. and it KILLS ME. love only fits in small things
Hero: “Your heart beats in my ribs and mine in yours, and both in God’s… The divine magnet is in you, and my magnet responds.” - Herman Melville to Nathaniel Hawthorne
Mary: "Love is watching someone die."
Alex: "meet me at blue diner, i'll take coffee and talk about nothing baby"
Sparrow: "How dare you love me like you've never known fear?" and "For you, the world," and "Darling, I was born to press my head between your shoulder blades," and "Will you start where I end?"
V: " You want to die for love. You always have. " and "someone will remember us, I say, even in another time" are living rent free in my mind 24/7 and I'm shaking. When will I finally be not the only one falling ?
Sahar K: To love another person is to see the face of god!!!
Miriam: all the love in the world is useless when there is total lack of understanding- kafka
Juls: Don’t you think they are maybe the same? Love and attention
to practices of love:
Leo; i love feeling happy bc somebody that i love is happy and comfortable....like its not about me i just love seeing you smile. we are safe together...idk i just feel it bro
A: I like to think love is leaning on each other during the light or dark days. Its a personal mission of mine to find out who I am and what I want. Yet I never seem to find my place in this world and as I look and look , I realise the only place I can be myself even with or without the efforts to find myself was done on that day or not, I am always tired so shall I lean on you? And you can lean on me as well. I shall be your fig tree and you shall be my favourite willow tree.
L: It's too late at night to be soul searching, but it's a journey we all seem to find ourselves on these days.
Anthi: feeling safe and at home, I guess (also I love frogs)
Julia: ive found that loving someone is like becoming your own thesaurus. you have to find or come up with infinite ways to say, you’re beautiful, or, i love you. it’s a gift
Galexies: ive been writing letters to the person i'd love one day since i was 14. i write them in a little journal usually, but i've been digitizing them into emails and sending them to one account that i'll give to them someday. i'd like to put pictures, but i haven't been outside much recently so theres that. i wonder if they'd like the sunsets i have on file, or if they'd find my cat cute in a bowtie.
Caeles: Love is sharing fruit slices and making someone tea at random
Dundy: Love is sending your friends cursed shit and watching them react in horror
to crushes and potential loves:
Jess: I have a crush on my roommate. It sucks, but it's also wonderful. I get to be around him all the time when we're at school. we share a life together; it's rather domestic. I think a lot about marrying him and being domestic with him forever. It won't happen, and I'll move on eventually, but I'll be happy with him for as long as I can. I hope you feel loved tonight, because you are. Sleep well.
Aki: I so desperately want to believe that love is fake because I’ve seen what happens when loved ones leave but whenever I start to convince myself that I’ll never love anyone my best friend messages me telling me she loves me. She’s the only person I’ve ever pictured having a future with but love scares me and I don’t really know what to do but I think as long as she’s with me in some way, I’ll be fine
Hi: her her i keep thinking abt her.... gonna see her in 8 days or so i really miss her. its ok if shes never gonna love me like i want her to really being her friend spending time with her makes me the happiest girl on earth.... outsold antidepressants
Kit: this guy i have a crush on has hypnotically dark brown eyes and he's wonderful and shows me kindness like no one else
Juno: my crush has all the stars in his eyes
Mads: When I have the courage to meet my eyes with hers, the world stands still
Be Nice To Me: Look bro I never do these but I am yearning to hold them SO badly right now and someone needs to know it besides me
to the trials of love:
Pppppp: I just wanna love like from the movies and what I read about.. but everyone tells me that that’s fictional and rare to find in the real world and it sucks bc it seems like all the guys I’ve met are terrible and the norms of society are all about not respecting women and uthdjdjdk
Manny: I have been in love before and I will be again but I’m not now and I miss it
Ok: I don't think I've ever been in love, though I love many people. I am waiting for the day I look at someone and can say, YES. IT'S YOU.
Chloe: idk rn i'm like okay with my love and i'm happy so we'll see i'm just a little cautious rn bc my last partner told me i didn't know how to love
L: love is so fucking complicated I don't even know where to start
Corrin: He’s not real and it worried me that I will never allow myself to live or be loved because I will always be waiting for him
Sean: Good luck it dont exist
Serena: i want 2 b in love :(( </3
13: I don’t know anymore
M: I just really don’t like dealing with it lol
to beloved characters:
Janaya: I’m madly in love with my comfort and kin character and I hope maybe in the afterlife I can relive a life with him in some sort of dimension
Jhgjdf: when i was a kid i had a crush on ash ketchum from pokemon and id always daydream about being a female pkmn trainer and meeting him and we fall in love
to advice and prose:
Mikolai: Love is earth, gentle and soft at first flight but upon being broken, drowns you in the dry choking wastes of its consequences...
Thex: Your hands will not go cold without someone to hold them. I am here. I will be here.
Kat: it is the nearest proof to god that i find myself surrounded by people who love in a way that complements so wonderfully the way i love
H: believe in love out of spite believe in love to prove everyone wrong believe in love because you were told not to and we will not do what we’re told anymore believe in love because it’s the strongest act of teenage rebellion we have left believe in love because it’s easier not to and when is easy worth doing? believe in love because everything says otherwise but you are untouchable, you are your own, you are not made by their design believe in love because, perhaps, you are love
Ali: I used to want a kind of love that feels like coming home and now I want nothing more than to be away from home on many different adventures
Em: you dont need to love yourself to accept it from others
to the small, the simple, and the sweet:
Ireal: Poems
O: Flowers
Fay: ah im sorry that i’m feeling unmotivated but you are very kind.
Ad: we love LOVE
A: <3
Isak: small things

thoughts on free! s3? what do you think went wrong/right/what you wish it would’ve went etc
I could quite literally go on FOREVER about season 3 and y’know what you asked for it so I’m just gonna ramble until I feel good about it lmao.
Now first I have to say that I wholeheartedly love season 3 with the deepest passion in my bones. I genuinely didn’t think that we were ever going to GET a season 3 in the first place, so the fact that it exists is just... so meaningful to me as someone whose favorite franchise is Free! and someone whose life was saved by these dumbass swimmers.
I will say that season 3 isn’t what I wanted from it. I wanted it to be centered on Nagisa, Rei, Gou, Sousuke, Ai, and Momo. I love Haru with my entire being but I really really REALLY wanted to see a series centered on the Iwatobi trio. They’re so underrated and I felt like they were lowkey sidelined in Eternal Summer so I wanted to see them shine and grow together in their third year. But of course Kyoani has just been setting them aside more and more as time has gone on so I feel like that was nothing but a hopeless dream lmao. I have a lot of headcanons and AUs about what went on with everyone who was still in Iwatobi while the rest of the gang was in Tokyo. The little bits that Kyoani gave us of them were beautiful, I will admit. Episode 11 is my FAVORITE episode of season 3. The fact that Rei WON A NATIONAL RACE??? Like, come on. I wish we could’ve seen the work that he put in to even be able to do that in the first place. That moment where he ponders what he’ll be doing after high school really gets to me too because I would love to know what the fuck he and the others are gonna do. I wish we could’ve seen the moments in their third year that led to whatever decisions they will make. I wanted to see the Iwatobi trio go through the absolute wringer together lmao. I wanted angst I wanted to see their journey that led them to where they are now. I wanted to see more of them growing with the new trio too. I wanted to learn more about Gou and Sousuke’s past through their interactions in her third year. If the season was longer I feel like they could’ve had it be half the Iwatobi arc and half the Tokyo arc, y’know what I mean?
Nonetheless, I love season 3 for what it was. I’m so beyond happy that they brought in Asahi, Ikuya, Natsuya, and Nao, you have no idea. The High Speed! characters hold such a special place in my heart. I wish Asahi would’ve had more of an arc/character development though, and I wish Nao was more included. I think Natsuya’s character arc was my favorite of the whole season. Seeing the trash traveling man that he had become and his interactions with Rin and Sousuke really stuck with me for some reason. And that line that he had when he was talking to Ikuya and fucking crying like, “a dream to fight for my strength and pride, plain and simple.” That shit fucked me up bro. We all meme about Natsuya a lot but I feel like there’s a lot of deeper shit there that’s yet to be explored. When we met Ryuuji I was genuinely convinced that he was Ikuya and Natsuya’s father because it would explain a lot about Natsuya’s behavior. A trash dad who wasn’t really there for his family and just kinda fucked off to travel the world training swimmers until he found one that met his expectations? That would’ve added so much to Natsuya and Ikuya’s background stories and their character arcs. Like can you imagine? Natsuya not initially going into professional swimming because the fact that his father LEFT to find a swimmer to train instead of training his own damn son because he didn’t see that potential in him??? Natsuya being inspired by Ikuya to work hard to prove their father wrong??????? Nao punching Ryuuji square in the nose the moment he sees him???????????? A fucking gold mine that Kyoani could’ve dove into, but no he’s related to Shizuru lmao.
I could go on forever about Natsuya in season 3 cuz I just really, really loved his arc but I’m gonna keep rolling haha. Hiyori was probably the most unexpected thing from season 3 and I just... love him so much. Like his absolute snakey behavior gave me the same chills that that scene of Sousuke pushing Haru against a vending machine in episode 2 of Eternal Summer gave me. I LOVE that shit. The Free! antagonists just keep getting bitchier and bitchier lmao. I also relate to Hiyori on a deeper level. I too have been selfishly protective of my best friends in a way that... really just wasn’t the way to go. Like jeez Hiyori I understand how you feel but maybe let them talk to Ikuya at least once??? Chill with the possessiveness? Idk I know Hiyori is the source of a lot of discourse lol, but that’s just how I feel because of my own similar experiences with myself and others who’ve acted in a similar way. I do wish his beef at the other boys wasn’t solved by just fuckin... swimming with Haru lmfaoooooo. Like I wish they just would’ve added more to his conversation with Ikuya when he asked him to join the relay with him.
I was quite satisfied with Rin’s arc in season 3. It just like, made perfect sense to me I guess lmao. I know he wasn’t there much but I don’t know what else they could or should have done with him, if that makes sense. The fact that his coach is Ai’s uncle is just the best thing ever too lmao.
I was also very happy with Haru’s arc actually!! Seeing how much he has grown makes me feel like a proud mom. Ya boi is tired of the bullshit and the miscommunication haha. Of course I’ll always wish he didn’t go into pro swimming but alas, gotta deal with it I guess. I love his dynamic with Ryuuji and the way that he has dealt with pro swimming though. And his decision to go into the individual medley absolutely made me lose my mind. I didn’t know I needed to see him swim the other strokes until it happened and I just, I loved that so muchhh.
I alsooooo enjoyed Ikuya’s arc. Seeing someone from your past again like that can 100% have that effect on you. I just kinda wish we understood more about like, why he just randomly faints while swimming sometimes? I feel like they didn’t solidly explain it? Cuz I don’t think it was always from overworking himself. Idk maybe I’m just a dumbass and remembering incorrectly.
Kisumi deserved better. YOU CAN’T TELL ME THIS BOY DOESN’T HAVE UNDERLYING ANGST THAT KYOANI HASN’T DELVED INTO. He gave us that line of “We’ll never make friends like the ones we had back then” and then him worrying about whether or not there was anything he could do to help with the Ikuya situation. This boy feels left out and you can’t tell me otherwise and it is 100% because of the fact that he’s not a swimmer. Someone give this boy a basketball team that he can experience that kind of bond with PLEASE. I AM BEGGING ON MY KNEES!!!
Makoto also deserved better. Like, okay, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved his arc with the kids and Nao and all that. I love his new dream. BUT!!! Kyoani has yet to go into depth with his insecurities with Haru. I’m still not over that damn dream he had on that bus. All we got in season 3 was Makoto’s aNGSTY looks when it came to his relationship with Haru lmao. GIVE MAKOTO A BIGGER ROLE AND A BIGGER ARC DAMMIT. He’s one of the most popular characters I’m surprised his angst hasn’t been touched on more. This dumbass just needs to stop holding things in i SWEAR TO GAWD.
I thought the inclusion of Albert was kinda weird, dunno what the point of him is aside from making Haru shake in his bones. Kinjou is definitely interesting. He scares me lmao, but I am here for that. Give us an antagonist who is just absolutely unhinged at this point LMAO. I have some headcanons about him too but I feel like the new movie coming up is going to crush my dreams soooo yeah.
Isuzu is a goddess. I’m so happy she’s finally here and she has a name and a FACE. We learned that the Mikoshiba bros had a sister before we even knew that Momo existed lmao (Sei mentioned her in a drama cd from season 1). I almost thought they were never going to give her to us but she’s here and she’s beautiful and she’s everything that I wanted her to be. I’m so happy she thinks Gou is cute and that GOU LIKES HER and I just ugh yes thank you so much Kyoani I never expected that we’d actually get this but I’m so happy we have it. I hope she goes to Hidaka Uni and gets to race Haru like she wanted haha. And I’m so happy we got to see her swim! Our first in-anime female swimmer with a name. I love her.
Speaking of FEMALE SWIMMERS. Sighhhhhh.... My biggest disappointment. Aki Yazaki. Where is she? We deserve her!! I promise we do!! She was SUCH an important character in the High Speed! novels and kyoani decided that she just doesn’t exist anymore lmao (biggest reason why I’m not the biggest fan of the Starting Days movie). At this point I’ve lost hope that she’ll ever be included in the anime, and it makes me so sad. I love her so much and there’s so much potential for an amazing beautiful story arc with her if she reunited with the boys. I don’t think we’re going to get a season 4, (the new movie is scaring me making me think it’s the end of the series with the way it’s been advertised...) but if we DID get one I imagine it beginning with Haru walking through a snowy day, huddling close to himself to shelter from the cold, when he passes by a tall figure and catches a glimpse of familiar caramel hair with a loose little braid peeking out from behind one ear and a large scarf that has gotten quite messed up over years of wear and tear, a memory clicks in his mind like a light switch and he stops in his tracks to turn around and let a long forgotten name slip from his lips: “Yazaki Aki?” ... cue opening sequence. LIKE WOULDN’T THAT BE SO AMAZING???????? I WOULD FUCKING SHIT MYSELF OKAY YOU DON’T UNDERSTANDDDD. Aki is one of my favorite characters I’m so mad she wasn’t in season 3. I’m also mad that Satomi Nii wasn’t there either like!!! She would make a great trio with Ikuya and Hiyori that’s all I’m sayinggggg. I would probably start crying if either of them showed up at some point like genuinely I would just be a mess sobbing on the floor. ALSO I FEEL LIKE GOU AND ISUZU WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM LIKE PLS GIVE ME THE GIRLS THAT WE DESERVE!!!
The art style of season 3 was pretty good. The only thing that bothered me about it was how fucking WIDE the characters’ shoulders were sometimes. Especially with the big bois like Makoto and Sousuke. Like please god no stop that. I’m always gonna miss the art style from season 1 tho, the crazy expressions n shit that were there were just too GOOD lmao. I feel like in season 3 they kind of attempted to bring that back but it just wasn’t executed the same and done to the same extent. R.I.P. the comedy from season 1, it will be forever missed.
I love the opening and ending themes, always. So fucking good. I’m so happy all the characters were included in the end theme animation sequence. I’ll never get over Gou and her BEAUTY.
ANYWAYS. Those are my thoughts in the general sense. Idk if I forgot anything because I have so many thoughts that’re all unorganized haha. If anyone wants me to talk in more detail about anything specific I am soooooo down! Thank you for sending in this ask, talking about this show makes me happy hehe.

Its somewhat ironic that a movie about time travel can’t be reviewed properly until your future self rewatches the movie. It’s bold of Nolan to make such a thoroughly dense blockbuster. He assumes people will actually want to see ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án more than once so they can understand it properly, which some may not. This movie makes the chronology of Inception look as simplistic as tic-tac-toe. Ergo, it’s hard for me to give an accurate rating, without having seen it twice, as I’m still trying to figure out whether everything does indeed make sense. If it does, this movie is easily a 9 or 10. If it doesn’t, it’s a 6. It’s further not helped by the fact that the dialogue in the first 15 minutes of the movie is painfully hard to understand / hear. Either they were behind masks; they were practically mumbling; the sound effects were too loud; or all of the above. The exposition scenes are also waayyy too brief for something this complex — a problem also shared with Interstellar actually. (Interstellar had this minimalist exposition problem explaining Blight, where if you weren’t careful, you’d miss this one sentence / scene in the entire movie explaining that Blight was a viral bacteria: “Earth’s atmosphere is 80% nitrogen, we don’t even breathe nitrogen. Blight does, and as it thrives, our air gets less and less oxygen”). I guess it’s a Nolan quirk. Hopefully, a revision of the film audio sorts the sound mixing out. I do like the soundtrack, but it’s too loud initially. I liked all the actors. You think John Washington can’t act at first, but he can, and he grows on you as the film progresses. And Pattinson is his usual charming self. Elizabeth is a surprise treat. And so on. Its worth a watch either way. See it with subtitles if you can. And definitely don’t expect to fully understand whats going on the first time around. Its one hell of a complicated film. It will be very hard for an average viewer to gather all the information provided by this movie at the first watch. But the more you watch it, more hidden elements will come to light. And when you are able to put these hidden elements together. You will realize that this movie is just a “masterpiece” which takes the legacy of Christopher Nolan Forward If I talk about acting, Then I have to say that Robert Pattinson has really proved himself as a very good actor in these recent years. And I am sure his acting skills will increase with time. His performance is charming and very smooth. Whenever he is on the camera, he steals the focus John David Washington is also fantastic in this movie. His performance is electrifying, I hope to see more from him in the future. Other characters such as Kenneth Branagh, Elizabeth, Himesh Patel, Dimple Kapadia, Clémence Poésy have also done quite well. And I dont think there is a need to talk about Michael Caine Talking about Music, its awesome. I dont think you will miss Hans Zimmer’s score. Ludwig has done a sufficient job. There is no lack of good score in the movie Gotta love the editing and post production which has been put into this movie. I think its fair to say this Nolan film has focused more in its post production. The main problem in the movie is the sound mixing. Plot is already complex and some dialogues are very soft due to the high music score. It makes it harder to realize what is going on in the movie. Other Nolan movies had loud BGM too. But Audio and dialogues weren’t a problem My humble request to everyone is to please let the movie sink in your thoughts. Let your mind grasp all the elements of this movie. I am sure more people will find it better. Even those who think they got the plot. I can bet they are wrong. ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án is the long awaited new movie from Christopher Nolan. The movie that’s set to reboot the multiplexes post-Covid. It’s a manic, extremely loud, extremely baffling sci-fi cum spy rollercoaster that will please a lot of Nolan fan-boys but which left me with very mixed views. John David Washington (Denzel’s lad) plays “The Protagonist” — a crack-CIA field operative who is an unstoppable one-man army in the style of Hobbs or Shaw. Recruited into an even more shadowy organisation, he’s on the trail of an international arms dealer, Andrei Sator (Kenneth Branagh in full villain mode). Sator is bullying his estranged wife Kat (Elizabeth Debicki) over custody of their son (and the film unusually has a BBFC warning about “Domestic Abuse”). Our hero jets the world to try to prevent a very particular kind of Armageddon while also keeping the vulnerable and attractive Kat alive. This is cinema at its biggest and boldest. Nolan has taken a cinema ‘splurge’ gun, filled it with money, set it on rapid fire, removed the safety and let rip at the screen. Given that Nolan is famous for doing all of his ‘effects’ for real and ‘in camera’, some of what you see performed is almost unbelievable. You thought crashing a train through rush-hour traffic in “Inception” was crazy? You ain’t seen nothing yet with the airport scene! And for lovers of Chinooks (I must admit I am one and rush out of the house to see one if I hear it coming!) there is positively Chinook-p*rn on offer in the film’s ridiculously huge finale. The ‘inversion’ aspects of the story also lends itself to some fight scenes — one in particular in an airport ‘freeport’ — which are both bizarre to watch and, I imagine, technically extremely challenging to pull off. In this regard John David Washington is an acrobatic and talented stunt performer in his own right, and must have trained for months for this role. Nolan’s crew also certainly racked up their air miles pre-lockdown, since the locations range far and wide across the world. The locations encompassed Denmark, Estonia, India, Italy, Norway, the United Kingdom, and United States. Hoyte Van Hoytema’s cinematography is lush in introducing these, especially the beautiful Italian coast scenes. Although I did miss the David Arnold strings that would typically introduce these in a Bond movie: it felt like that was missing. The ‘timey-wimey’ aspects of the plot are also intriguing and very cleverly done. There are numerous points at which you think “Oh, that’s a sloppy continuity error” or “Shame the production design team missed that cracked wing mirror”. Then later in the movie, you get at least a dozen “Aha!” moments. Some of them (no spoilers) are jaw-droppingly spectacular. Perhaps the best twist is hidden in the final line of the movie. I only processed it on the way home. And so to the first of my significant gripes with ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án. The sound mix in the movie is all over the place. I’d go stronger than that… it’s truly awful (expletive deleted)! Nolan often implements Shakespeare’s trick of having characters in the play provide exposition of the plot to aid comprehension. But unfortunately, all of this exposition dialogue was largely incomprehensible. This was due to: the ear-splitting volume of the sound: 2021 movie audiences are going to be suffering from ‘~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  ánis’! (LOL); the dialogue is poorly mixed with the thumping music by Ludwig Göransson (Wot? No Hans Zimmer?); a large proportion of the dialogue was through masks of varying description (#covid-appropriate). Aaron Taylor-Johnson was particularly unintelligible to my ears. Overall, watching this with subtitles at a special showing might be advisable! OK, so I only have a PhD in Physics… but at times I was completely lost as to the intricacies of the plot. It made “Inception” look like “The Tiger Who Came to Tea”. There was an obvious ‘McGuffin’ in “Inception” — — (“These ‘dream levels’… how exactly are they architected??”…. “Don’t worry… they’ll never notice”. And we didn’t!) In “~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án” there are McGuffins nested in McGuffins. So much of this is casually waved away as “future stuff… you’re not qualified” that it feels vaguely condescending to the audience. At one point Sator says to Kat “You don’t know what’s going on, do you?” and she shakes her head blankly. We’re right with you there luv! There are also gaps in the storyline that jar. The word “~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án”? What does it mean. Is it just a password? I’m none the wiser. The manic pace of ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án and the constant din means that the movie gallops along like a series of disconnected (albeit brilliant) action set pieces. For me, it has none of the emotional heart of the Cobb’s marriage problems from “Inception” or the father/daughter separation of “Interstellar”. In fact, you barely care for anyone in the movie, perhaps with the exception of Kat. It’s a talented cast. As mentioned above, John David Washington is muscular and athletic in the role. It’s a big load for the actor to carry in such a tent-pole movie, given his only significant starring role before was in the excellent BlacKkKlansman. But he carries it off well. A worthy successor to Gerard Butler and Jason Statham for action roles in the next 10 years. This is also a great performance by Robert Pattinson, in his most high-profile film in a long time, playing the vaguely alcoholic and Carré-esque support guy. Pattinson’s Potter co-star Clemence Poésy also pops up — rather more un-glam that usual — as the scientist plot-expositor early in the movie. Nolan’s regular Michael Caine also pops up. although the 87-year old legend is starting to show his age: His speech was obviously affected at the time of filming (though nice try Mr Nolan in trying to disguise that with a mouth full of food!). But in my book, any amount of Caine in a movie is a plus. He also gets to deliver the best killer line in the film about snobbery! However, it’s Kenneth Branagh and Elizabeth Debicki that really stand out. They were both fabulous, especially when they were bouncing off each other in their marital battle royale. So, given this was my most anticipated movie of the year, it’s a bit of a curate’s egg for me. A mixture of being awe-struck at times and slightly disappointed at others. It’s a movie which needs a second watch, so I’m heading back today to give my ear drums another bashing! And this is one where I reserve the right to revisit my rating after that second watch… it’s not likely to go down… but it might go up. (For the full graphical review, check out One Mann’s Movies on t’interweb and Facebook. Thanks.) As this will be non-spoiler, I can’t say too much about the story. However, what I can is this: ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án’s story is quite dynamic in the sense that you won’t understand it till it wants you to. So, for the first half, your brain is fighting for hints and pieces to puzzle together the story. It isn’t until halfway through the movie that ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án invites you to the fantastic storytelling by Christopher Nolan. Acting is beyond phenomenal, and I’d be genuinely surprised if neither Robert Pattinson nor John David Washington doesn’t receive an Oscar nomination for best actor. It’s also hard not to mention how good Elizabeth Debicki and Aaron Johnson both are. All around, great acting, and the dialogue amps up the quality of the movie. The idea of this movie is damn fascinating, and while there are films that explore time-travelling, there’s never been anything quite like this. It has such a beautiful charm and for the most part, explains everything thoroughly. It feels so much more complex than any form of time-travelling we’ve seen, and no less could’ve been expected from Nolan. Oh my lord, the score for this film fits so perfectly. Every scene that’s meant to feel intense was amped by a hundred because of how good the score was. Let me just say though, none of them will be found iconic, but they fit the story and scenes so well. In the end, I walked out, feeling very satisfied. Nevertheless, I do have issues with the film that I cannot really express without spoiling bits of the story. There are definitely little inconsistencies that I found myself uncovering as the story progressed. However, I only had one issue that I found impacted my enjoyment. That issue was understanding some of the dialogue. No, not in the sense that the movie is too complicated, but more that it was hard to make out was being said at times. It felt like the movie required subtitles, but that probably was because, at a time in the film, there was far too much exposition. Nevertheless, I loved this film, I’ll be watching it at least two more times, and I think most of you in this group will enjoy it. I definitely suggest watching it in theatres if possible, just so you can get that excitement. (4/5) & (8.5/10) for those that care about number scores. At first, I want to ask Christopher Nolan one question, HOW THE HELL YOU DID THIS? Seriously I want to have an answer, How did he write such as this masterpiece! How did he get this complicated, fabulous and creative idea? What is going on in his mind? The story is written and directed perfectly, the narration style was absolutely unique. I have no idea how can anyone direct such as this story, that was a huge challenge, and as usual Nolan gave us a masterpiece that we’ll put beside (Memento), (Inception) and (Interstellar) The movie is so fast-paced in a good way, there was no boring moment. The chemistry between John David Washington and Robert Pattinson was great and funny and both of their performance was really good. Elizabeth Debicki performance was the best in the movie because she had the chance to show her acting abilities and she cached up that chance and showed us an A level acting. The music wasn’t unique and distinct as the music of Interstellar for example and I think this movie needed the touch of Hans Zimmer, I’m not saying that Ludwig Göransson failed but Hans Zimmer in another level. If there was something I’d say that I didn’t like it in the movie would it be that Nolan discarded any set up or characters backgrounds except Elizabeth Debicki dramatic story but it wasn’t that bad for me, I didn’t care about that, the exciting story didn’t give me the chance to focus on it. But the actual problem was the third act, it was really complicated and I got lost and I convinced myself to discard the questions that were in my head and enjoy the well-made action sequences and Elizabeth Debicki performance. I think this kind of movie that gets better with a second and third watch. I honestly don’t quite know where to begin with ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án. I love Christopher Nolan’s work but I have never seen a more complicated film (and I understood Memento). ~After nearly three hours, I came away from ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án not knowing myself, my mind reduced to nothing more than piles of ash. Was there time travel involved? Hmm, there was definitely something about time inversion. I mean, does Nolan even understand what he wrote? Look, I give credit to the director because he’s one of the few directors left who knows how to create a compelling and intelligent blockbuster. ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án is full of Nolan trademarks — the gratuitous Michael Caine cameo, a loud, really loud score, complete with stunning cinematography and slickly inventive action set-pieces. This time around however, Nolan has finally managed to ‘out-Nolan’ himself: the palindromic plot, whilst creatively ambitious, is simply far too complicated for its own good. ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án is overlong, overstuffed, pretentious and too exhausting to comprehend in its entirety — it makes Inception and Interstellar look like Peppa Pig by comparison. I’m aware of the technical wizardry and creative mastery in this film and lord knows I’ll have to watch this again. For those who want a puzzle, ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án at least provides a unique cinematic experience. But to actually enjoy solving it Nolan wants you to work very very hard

Gratsu Weekend 2020 Prompt: Soothe Pairing: Gray x Natsu A Collaboration by @mdelpin and @oryu404
AO3 | FF.Net |Takes place after Into the Lion’s Den
June 27, 2021
“We should get going,” Gray murmured, not wanting to wake the two boys who had fallen asleep between them while watching the movie.
Hana, who was snuggled up against his other side, immediately complained, and Natsu couldn’t help but laugh. They looked so right like that. Hana had been shy towards Gray in the beginning, but now she seemed to accept his presence, even welcome it. Natsu felt a pleasant warmth fill him as he looked at all of them huddled together, looking so much like a family.
One that was made up of the somewhat broken remains of two others, but he couldn’t help but feel like they fit well, and seeing his kids so comfortable around his boyfriend made him feel more confident about his choice.
The noise of rain pit pattering against the house was soothing, and he could see that the boys weren’t the only ones affected by the sound. Gray seemed like he was getting drowsier by the second, and Natsu was reminded that Erza was away at some flower show and wouldn’t return until the following afternoon.
“You don’t have to go, “Natsu offered, “You were coming back tomorrow morning anyway. Just stay, Aki can sleep in Atlas’ room.”
Gray peered at him in surprise, but after a moment or two, he replied, “Okay,” his eyes returning to the television. He shifted slightly to allow Hana to curl into him more.
Natsu honestly hadn’t really thought about anything other than the fact that he didn’t want the night to end yet, but the moment Gray agreed, he realized what he’d done.
He’d asked his boyfriend to spend the night without giving any thought to where he was going to sleep or what it would mean for them to share a bed.
Shit!
It was too late to take it back, and it’s not like he wanted to. He just wasn’t ready to do more than what they were already doing, and now he was afraid he’d given Gray the impression that he was eager to take the next step.
The movie ended, and after turning off all the downstairs lights and checking all the doors and windows, they headed upstairs. Each of them held a sleeping little boy in his arms while Hana ran ahead, turning the lights on for them. She got ready for bed on her own, entering Atlas’ room to kiss them good night, and Natsu left Gray with the boys so he could tuck her in.
All the while, his heart was fluttering, joyful, and anxious. He already knew he was in love with Gray, even if he’d never dared to say the words out loud. Experience had taught him that bond had to have been in place before he saw Gray as anything but a close friend. While he hadn’t really given much thought as to where he wanted their relationship to go moving forward, this taste of domestic bliss made him wonder.
Could they have something like this sometime in their future?
He really hoped so.
He read Hana a short bedtime story and kissed her goodnight one last time before returning to Atlas’ room to make sure both boys had everything they needed. Neither had woken up, and they had already snuggled into each other in their sleep.
Gray waited for him there, and Natsu could tell that he was a bit nervous as well. He grabbed his hand and led him to his bedroom, heart racing with every step they took as the door loomed nearer.
“This is it right here,” Natsu chuckled nervously before entering, thankful that for once, his room wasn’t too messy. He let go of Gray’s hand, immediately moving to his dresser to find a pair of pajama pants Gray could wear, trying to keep himself busy so that he didn’t say or do anything stupid.
“Uhm, the bathroom is over there, I think there might be an unopened toothbrush in one of the drawers,” Natsu babbled, tossing the sleepwear to his boyfriend and pointing him toward the en suite before moving to remove the cushions from his bed.
“Has anyone ever told you you’re kind of adorable when you’re freaking out?” Gray snickered, quickly closing the door of the bathroom, only narrowly escaping the cushion Natsu had thrown his way.
His entire face burned from Gray’s teasing compliment and the realization that he hadn’t been as smooth as he’d thought. He placed both of his hands on the dresser pushing against it in an attempt to calm down his racing heart at hearing Gray say he was adorable.
Once he’d calmed down some, he grabbed another pair of pajama pants for himself, ignoring the sound of the bathroom door opening and of his bedsheets rustling as Gray lay down on them. Taking off his pants, he quickly replaced them with pajama pants, not sure whether Gray was watching him or not. He thought about leaving his t-shirt on, but he knew he tended to overheat at night, and he reasoned that Gray had seen him shirtless plenty of times.
He turned around slowly, attempting to prepare himself mentally for what he knew he was about to see and failing miserably. Gray was casually sprawled on his bed wearing his pants and looking every bit the male model he was.
It was rather unfair that any person could be that effortlessly attractive. And to his dismay, Natsu felt his body respond with interest as his eyes trailed over his boyfriend, from his intense dark blue eyes, settling on the lips that felt so good against his when they kissed. He swallowed thickly as his eyes continued their journey south over broad shoulders and taut pectorals, down to the well-defined abs that he longed to trace. He stopped himself before he could continue, quickly moving his hands to his groin in utter mortification, trying to keep Gray from noticing how much seeing him like that had affected him.
Gray kindly chose not to comment on Natsu’s predicament feigning interest in the room’s decoration instead. However, his eyes lingered on a framed picture of him and Lisanna far too long for Natsu’s liking, and that helped with his problem a bit.
“Are you planning on coming to bed soon?” Gray asked in a neutral tone, “I’m kind of tired.”
“Uhm yeah, just need to brush my teeth,” Natsu called out, hurrying to enter his bathroom. He grabbed the toothpaste and began to brush his teeth, all while trying to give himself a pep talk.
He was turning it into a bigger deal than it was. They were just going to sleep. Next to each other. In the same bed. Nothing to worry about at all. He took a few deep breaths and exited the bathroom.
His body may have been overwhelmed by the sight of Gray in all his beauty, but it was nothing compared to what it did to his heart to see him lying comfortably under the covers, but he had no words that could express that. Instead, he griped, “Scoot over, you’re on my side of the bed.”
“And here I thought romance was dead,” Gray muttered, but he moved, lying on his side so he could look at Natsu, who had finally braved his bed after turning off all the lights.
“Not dead, just kind of petrified,” Natsu admitted at long last, lying on his back and covering his eyes with his hand.
Gray chuckled, “Are you afraid that you’re so irresistible I’ll have no choice but to jump you?”
The words had been said in jest, but Natsu knew there was some truth to them, he was sort of afraid.
“I don’t know,” he hedged, “I guess I’m more afraid of what you think this might mean.”
“I think that I was tired, it was raining and you offered me a place to sleep,” Gray assured him, pulling Natsu’s hand away from his eyes so that they could look at each other in the dim moonlight. “It doesn’t have to mean anything more than that unless we both want it to.”
Natsu thought about that, trying to decide what he wanted, but Gray’s voice cut right through his thoughts.
“Hey dumbass, wasn’t it you who said you’d tell me if I did anything you weren’t ready for? Or have you already forgotten?” He moved closer and pulled Natsu into his arms, kicking the blanket away with one foot so he could put his leg on top of it. “Geez, what are you, a furnace?”
Natsu snickered at the comment and found himself relaxing again, getting comfortable in the embrace.
“Is that your subtle way of telling me I’m hot?”
Gray snorted at that, “I think we’ve established I don’t really do subtle.”
“Ain’t that the truth! Or tactful, or patient,” Natsu began to giggle loudly when Gray cried out, “Why you little jerk!” and promptly began to tickle his sides.
Natsu let out a high pitched squeal as Gray’s fingers poked and danced across his sensitive spots.
“Shh, you’ll wake up the kids,” Gray taunted, challenging him to remain quiet despite his onslaught.
“Jerk,” Natsu managed to pant out as his stomach began to ache from all the laughing.
“But you love me!” Gray exclaimed as he stopped tickling, and though he was trying to play it off as part of their game, Natsu could hear the underlying question hiding in the quip.
He turned to his side to look at his boyfriend worriedly, “Are you really ready to hear me say that to you?”
Gray frowned, remaining silent for a moment, “I don’t know, I-” he fumbled around for words as he lay on his back and stared up at the ceiling. Natsu moved until his head was on Gray’s chest, draping his arm casually over his boyfriend’s stomach.
“I thought I’d never have this again,” Natsu murmured, “but here you are, and you’re so much more than I could have ever asked for.” He kissed Gray’s chest gently, not really in the mood to start anything when Gray seemed so lost, “I’m so grateful I met you, and that you’ve been so understanding.”
“You’re worth the wait,” Gray whispered, making Natsu feel shy. Gray chuckled, searching out his lips for a sweet kiss, and even as it deepened, their tongues played lazily, neither wanting to start something that might complicate the moment. With one final kiss, Gray wrapped his arms around Natsu, each shifting until they found a position where they were both comfortable.
“You know, for a minute there, I was afraid I was the one who was going to get jumped.” Gray teased as he caressed Natsu’s arm in slow circles. “Don’t think I didn’t see what your eyes were doing,”
Natsu could only be thankful he’d already turned off the lights because the burst of red that was surely spreading across his face couldn’t be seen in the dark.
“Goodnight, love,” Gray snickered, the triumph in his voice unmistakable.
“Good night,” Natsu could still hear Gray chuckling at him, but he shrugged it off, refusing to give him the additional pleasure of getting a rise out of him. So what if he saw him? It’s not like it was a bad thing. He closed his eyes, vowing to get him back tomorrow before drifting off into the most peaceful slumber he’d had for a very long time.

Gray awoke to the sound of snores. Blinking his eyes open, he peered at his boyfriend. Natsu was splayed out over most of the bed, arms stretched out, mouth gaped wide open, pink hair sticking out every which way, and yet Gray still thought he looked stunning.
He turned on his side so he could get a good look at him, reveling in the intimacy of the moment and the elation that came from having Natsu invite him into his bed. He smiled as he remembered some of the things they’d said to each other before falling asleep. It had been peaceful and pleasant, a breath of fresh air compared to the way he’d been treated by his husband. It was everything he had been starving for.
Siegrain had always been in the mood for sex, but he rarely allowed himself to be vulnerable enough to do something like cuddling. And while their sex had been pleasurable, it had lacked affection. Their encounters, while frequent, were meaningless and disconnected. More often than not, Siegrain would turn on his side and go to sleep immediately after they were done, or he’d go off to a club claiming he was scouting, leaving Gray alone to wonder what he’d done wrong.
That was why, while Gray was definitely looking forward to having sex with Natsu at some point, he wasn’t in any hurry. He was beyond happy to enjoy what they had right now. Knowing that he was in this bed because Natsu cared about him as a person was incredibly satisfying, in a way he’d only experienced briefly in previous relationships.
Every touch, every word out of Natsu’s mouth, while sometimes idiotic, was honest and full of affection for him. Filling him with a sort of pleasure that while different from what he was used to felt infinitely more satisfying after years of being treated as nothing more than a pretty face or a piece of meat.
When he was with Natsu, he felt loved.
He moved a little closer and stroked Natsu’s hair carefully so as not to wake him just yet. The rays of the sun slipped through the gap underneath the door. The house was still quiet, aside from Natsu’s snoring, and Gray wanted to savor the serenity of the moment for as long as he could.
However, not even two minutes had passed when he heard the footsteps of two pairs of small, bare feet. Tiny, hushed voices and giggles were quickly coming closer. Gray couldn’t help but smile when the door handle went down oh so slowly, and as the door opened, Atlas and Aki came sneaking in.
He closed his eyes, pretending to be asleep until the boys had climbed on the bed, and it took almost all of his self-restraint to keep a straight face and hold back his laughter. How those little monkeys thought they were stealthy was beyond him, but even more surprising was the fact that Natsu was somehow able to sleep right through it. He waited, keeping perfectly still until he was sure they were both close enough, and then he sprung, wrapping them both in his arms.
The two boys squealed and giggled and thrashed around a little from being startled so suddenly, and only then did Natsu began to stir, opening his eyes and grinning at the scene that was unfolding. Gray had started a tickle war, and Natsu didn’t need more than a few seconds to catch up and join in. Once the boys were exhausted from laughing so hard, they moved them in between them, letting them catch their breaths as they all formed a big cuddle formation.
“Morning boys, did you sleep well?” Natsu asked, ruffling Atlas’ hair.
They both nodded happily chattering words at the same time, “Hungwy dada, down, eat!” Though a bit overenthusiastic, the message was loud and clear. But mostly loud.
Hana appeared in the doorway and hesitated for only a few seconds before joining them, and Gray was more than surprised when she didn’t give just Natsu a soft peck on the cheek but him as well. They barely fit in the bed with all five of them, so it wasn’t particularly comfortable, but none of them cared, content just to be together. And although Gray knew it was way too soon to be having thoughts like these, he couldn’t help but think that this was what being part of a family felt like.
“Hey dad, can we have pancakes?” Hana cajoled, really selling it with fluttering eyelashes and all.
“Sure-” Natsu stretched, or tried to as the lack of movement space was making it hard for him to do so, “but you all have to get off us first if you want us to get up.”
He didn’t have to say it twice. The kids scrambled off the bed, cheering and making their way downstairs ahead of them. Natsu got up as well, after a yawn and a proper stretch, but when Gray didn’t follow, he turned around to look at him, “You coming?”
“Yeah, I’ll...be right there,” Gray nodded.
“Kay,” Natsu smiled and leaned over to give him a kiss, “but I don’t want to hear any complaints when you take too long, and we already ate everything!” He then quickly went after the kids before they decided to get started without him or raided the pantry for snacks to bridge the wait for breakfast.
When Natsu was out of sight, Gray finally gave in to the emotions he’d been suppressing, not because he wanted to hide them from him, but because he didn’t want the kids to worry or get upset. Tears flowed freely from his eyes as he thought about moments like these in his past.
Waking up to Aki trying to climb into his and Siegrain’s bed, only to receive complaints and a foul mood if Siegrain had been in bed at all. Seeing the disappointment on his son’s face when he got scolded because he “smelled”, “drooled” or was “too loud.”
But he also remembered better days from his own childhood, when he was the one sneaking into his parents’ room. Times when his mother was pregnant with Rogue and let him feel her belly, how excited he’d been to feel the kicks and how he had promised to be the best big brother ever.
He had failed at that, and he felt like he had failed in his marriage as well. Not for his own sake and definitely not for Siegrain’s, but for Aki’s. He’d deserved to wake up to a loving family too. Like Atlas and Hana did and Gray and Rogue used to in the past.
He thought about all the times he’d failed Rogue after he left for college. He’d neglected to live up to the promise he had once made to always watch over him. But out of all his failures, Rogue was the one he could still do something about.
With that thought in mind, he sent his brother a text asking if he wanted to hang out sometime that week, just the two of them. And after that, he dried his tears and got up, ready to join Natsu and the kids for breakfast.

Gray could hear music playing on the radio as he came downstairs still wearing Natsu’s borrowed pajama pants, it was some catchy tune that had been popular that summer, although he didn’t know the name of it. The sound of Hana singing it made him smile, but not as much as Natsu singing offkey, more than likely in the hopes of annoying her if his laughs at her protests were any indication.
To his surprise, both Atlas and Aki were also in the kitchen, not planted in front of the TV set or in the playroom. Natsu was asking them to bring different ingredients from the refrigerator or pantry, and it had turned into a game, each boy trying to be the first one to figure out where the ingredient was located and bring it back to Natsu.
Aki was smiling, looking every bit as if he belonged there with the others, and Gray couldn’t help but to stand back and watch for a bit longer, feeling shy and a little out of place. None of them had noticed him yet, and as the next song came on, Atlas tried to dance, wiggling his butt and bouncing from one foot to the other. It wasn’t long before Aki tried to imitate him while Natsu and Hana looked at each other and burst into giggles. Each one doing their own version of the dance.
Gray snorted, and they all looked up at the noise, but rather than being embarrassed, Natsu coaxed him to join them, offering him his hand in invitation while the kids yelled out his name, welcoming him into their game.
“Get in here Princess, let’s show them how it’s done,” Natsu grinned, well aware of how much he hated the nickname and not caring in the slightest.
Gray shook his head at him in disapproval, but grabbed on to his hand all the same, letting Natsu lead him around the kitchen in complicated twirls and dips that were harder to keep up with than he’d first thought, especially while laughing. The kids ran after them, giggling at their antics and yelling encouragement.
He noticed Natsu staring at his face, brow furrowing in concern as he examined his puffy eyes, the remains of his earlier crying.
“Is everything okay?”
“It will be,” Gray smiled, caught up in the moment, in the joy of being part of something. It was like he had stolen a peek at his future, and he was already in love with it.
Almost as if he had heard his thoughts, Natsu’s eyes flashed with mischief as he teased, “Just think all this could be yours someday.”
God, he hoped so.
He wanted nothing more than for this to become his new normal. To wake up with the man he adored and be part of a loving family. One that actually enjoyed each other’s company. And while it was too soon for them to take such a big step, more than ever, he was determined to free himself of Siegrain’s shadow for good, so that someday when they were ready, they could.
Gray turned the tables on Natsu, smirking as he noticed his boyfriend had trouble following his steps, not used to being led, and when Gray dipped him, making sure he held on to him tightly so he wouldn’t fall, he teased, “Who’s the princess now?”
Everyone laughed as Natsu fluttered his eyelashes, playing along. Gray could feel his eyes well as he realized just how lucky he was to have fallen in love with this ridiculous man who had accepted him into his heart. He only hoped that they could heal each other and move forward into their very own future. One that Gray was determined would be full of laughter and love.

It’s bold of Nolan to make such a thoroughly dense blockbuster. He assumes people will actually want to see ~Lelki ismeretek more than once so they can understand it properly, which some may not. ~Lelki ismeretek is the long awaited new movie from Christopher Nolan. And so to the first of my significant gripes with ~Lelki ismeretek. This was due to: the ear-splitting volume of the sound: 2020 movie audiences are going to be suffering from ‘~Lelki ismeretekis’! And we didn’t!) In “~Lelki ismeretek” there are McGuffins nested in McGuffins. The word “~Lelki ismeretek”? What does it mean. Is it just a password? I’m none the wiser. The manic pace of ~Lelki ismeretek and the constant din means that the movie gallops along like a series of disconnected (albeit brilliant) action set pieces. However, what I can is this: ~Lelki ismeretek’s story is quite dynamic in the sense that you won’t understand it till it wants you to. So, for the first half, your brain is fighting for hints and pieces to puzzle together the story. It isn’t until halfway through the movie that ~Lelki ismeretek invites you to the fantastic storytelling by Christopher Nolan. But the actual problem was the third act, it was really complicated and I got lost and I convinced myself to discard the questions that were in my head and enjoy the well-made action sequences and Elizabeth Debicki performance. I think this kind of movie that gets better with a second and third watch. I honestly don’t quite know where to begin with ~Lelki ismeretek. I love Christopher Nolan’s work but I have never seen a more complicated film (and I understood Memento). ~After nearly three hours, I came away from ~Lelki ismeretek not knowing myself, my mind reduced to nothing more than piles of ash. Was there time travel involved? Hmm, there was definitely something about time inversion. I mean, does Nolan even understand what he wrote? Look, I give credit to the director because he’s one of the few directors left who knows how to create a compelling and intelligent blockbuster. ~Lelki ismeretek is full of Nolan trademarks — the gratuitous Michael Caine cameo, a loud, really loud score, complete with stunning cinematography and slickly inventive action set-pieces. This time around however, Nolan has finally managed to ‘out-Nolan’ himself: the palindromic plot, whilst creatively ambitious, is simply far too complicated for its own good. ~Lelki ismeretek is overlong, overstuffed, pretentious and too exhausting to comprehend in its entirety — it makes Inception and Interstellar look like Peppa Pig by comparison. I’m aware of the technical wizardry and creative mastery in this film and lord knows I’ll have to watch this again. For those who want a puzzle, ~Lelki ismeretek at least provides a unique cinematic experience. But to actually enjoy solving it Nolan wants you to work very very hard.

It’s bold of Nolan to make such a thoroughly dense blockbuster. He assumes people will actually want to see ~Lelki ismeretek more than once so they can understand it properly, which some may not. ~Lelki ismeretek is the long awaited new movie from Christopher Nolan. And so to the first of my significant gripes with ~Lelki ismeretek. This was due to: the ear-splitting volume of the sound: 2020 movie audiences are going to be suffering from ‘~Lelki ismeretekis’! There was an obvious ‘McGuffin’ in “Inception” — (“These ‘dream levels’… how exactly are they architected??”…. “Don’t worry… they’ll never notice”. And we didn’t!) In “~Lelki ismeretek” there are McGuffins nested in McGuffins. The word “~Lelki ismeretek”? What does it mean. Is it just a password? I’m none the wiser. The manic pace of ~Lelki ismeretek and the constant din means that the movie gallops along like a series of disconnected (albeit brilliant) action set pieces.

Mako-fam (a pq2 fanfic)
{Made another commitment to @thieves-in-the-palace so let’s go! (It’ll be a short fic I said, I’ll only hint at my ships I said. I might actually write a sequel to this focused on 20XX) Rated T, for strong language, “slight” (Ha, this thing is flooded with ship content) Okijuma, Yukichie, Souyo, Pegoryu, Annshiho, Yukamitsu, Junpei x Chidori and Akimina[just gonna shove a bunch of ships in here. I actually hit the tag limit.] and spoilers for Ticket 32}
Makoto Niijima, a girl with three families. One, the Phantom Thieves. Two, the Investigation Team. Three, SEES. Though she didn’t exactly know about the persona part. Until now.
They’ve just rescued the IT from Junessic land. Except for Yosuke. But they’ll have to find him later.
“Goro, can I speak to you for a second?” Makoto asks the brown-haired boy next to her.
“Yeah sure, in the theater?”
“Of course”
They walk over to the Kamoshidaman theater and plop down into the seats.
“FUCK, GORO! AUNT CHIE AND AUNT NAO HAVE PERSONAS?!”
“I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!”
They screamed for about another five minutes before they calmed down.
“Okay so, we just have to act normal. We can deal with this. It’s just Aunt Chie and Aunt Nao.”
“Yeah, I mean what are the odds that Uncle Aki has one too?”
*A.I.G.I.S*
“Goro, can I talk to you? Please?!” Makoto almost yells out, letting the slightest amount of panic into her voice.
“Yeah... sure...”
As they walk back into the Kamoshidaman theater, Goro‘s eyes start to widen. He’s finally comprehending.
“UNCLE AKI HAS A PERSONA?!”
“FUCK, MAKOTO I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!”
“YOU THINK I CAN?!”
Another five (20) minutes of screaming later...
“Okay, so our entire family has personas. We can deal with this.”
“Makoto. Uncle Aki just used an honorific on you. He never does that. It’s always either Mako-chan or Makoto. Same thing with Aunt Nao and Aunt Chie. And the rest of the family.”
“...I still remember how proud Aunt Nao was when they started calling you “the second coming of the detective prince”. She literally screamed out “THAT’S OUR BOY” when you were on tv. She was so happy.”
“Ha, remember when on your 15th birthday Uncle Aki and Aunt Chie gave you brass knuckles? Sae was so pissed”
“And then they got me Steel-toed boots and taught me how to do a roundhouse kick!”
“Do you still have those?”
“I never go anywhere without them.” And she pulls the brass knuckles from her bag.
“We’ve just got to bite back a few nicknames, and we’ll be fine.” Makoto whispers.
“Yeah.” Goro says back to her, with a small smile.
*ticket 32*
Makoto’s talking to Haru.
“Mako-chan, you’ve got to be a little less reckless! I don’t have my grenade launcher here to protect you!”
“I know, Haru. It’s just that I can’t help it when I see someone hurt my family.”
“Hmm...” Haru says, with a contemplative look on her face. Makoto wonders how she got this lucky to have this beautiful and sweet of a girlfriend.
“I guess I have Ren to thank for that” she thinks
And then Elizabeth talks about a new special screening.
“Maybe this is our chance?” Akihiko says to Chie.
Oh god oh no oh fuck- Makoto thinks
“Huh?” Chie replies to him
“Remember what Makoto said?”
And suddenly, Makoto’s having a flashback.
“Makoto, learning close-combat battle’s all well and good, but you need to learn a proper diet. Don’t eat meat 24/7 like they do” Naoto says to a younger Makoto.
“Aw, come on Naoto! Steak’s delicious!” Chie fires back.
Makoto smiled, a rare occurrence since the death of her father.
“Hey, look! She’s smiling!” Akihiko said to the other two.
“Aww, you’re so adorable, Makoto!” Chie said to her.
“I’m 13! Not three!”
Akihiko laughed, and said “I think she’s been hanging out with Ken too much.”
“Now come on! Show me a kick that could punt someone into the stratosphere!”
“Chie-!”
“Watch me go, Coach!” Chie says, and Makoto’s violently thrown back into the present.
“Heh! My fists have been aching for some action. Time for a one-two punch into the finishing blow!”
“*sigh* Whatever you say. Let’s just get going for now.”
As they’re walking, Yukiko walks up to Chie.
“Chie, you’re starting to scare her. Calm down a bit. I mean, you barely know her and you’re calling her Coach!”
“I’m sure she’s fine!”
“...I still can’t believe you’re my Prince Charming.”
“Ha! No take-backs, Yukiko! You’re my princess and I’m your Prince!”
And then Yukiko falls into a laughing fit.
And right behind them, Goro and Makoto are having a panic attack conversation
“I can’t believe they’re asking you to train them. They taught you everything you know!” Goro says, shocked.
“I know!”
“...Don’t you already know their weaknesses?”
“Yeah, Aunt Chie moves just slow enough to sweep her stable leg out and if Uncle Aki gets riled up enough he exposes his stomach.”
“Then fight them!”
“That’s not actually a bad idea...”
“There it is! Let’s get in there and land the first strike!” Akihiko yells.
Goro rolls his eyes and says “There he is. I was wondering when he was gonna go battle crazy.”
“Roger that, I’m ready to learn from the best!”
“And there she goes...” Makoto whispers
“...Wait, there’s no road!?” Chie screamed
“Whoa!”
Goro was barely able to restrain his laughter
“Calm down, you two. First, we need to assess the situation. See the enemy’s orientation. Gauge it’s speed, movements, and position. Observe, then predict its actions.”
This time it was Goro’s flashback.
“Come on, Goro. You need to observe. Predict their actions.” Naoto whispered.
“She’s right. Now, come at me!” Akihiko told him.
“Wait!” Minato walked in. “Use this!” And he handed him a wooden rapier.
Goro’s eyes glittered. “It’s just like the ones heroes from those movies use!”
“Très Magnefique!” Mitsuru exclamimed. “A one-handed sword!”
“Babe, Mitzi, come on. You know that the best weapon is a pair of fists.”
“You’ve got Makoto, let us have him!” Minato said to him.
“Come on, Lances are the best weapon to use!” Minako said, as she walked in.
Everyone in the room shot her down.
“You have Ken!” Chie said.
“What about me?” Ken said as he walked in.
“Nothing, we’re just arguing about weapons again.” Minato said to him, with a small smirk on his face.
“Nothing beats a Katana!” Yu said as he walked in.
Yukiko said, “You’re all wrong! Fans are easy to hide, and they can pack a punch!”
“Yukiko. My princess. I love you, but you’re wrong.”
The squabbles between them brought a sweet smile to Goro’s face. He had a family.
“Okay, come on! This is how you use a sword!” Minato said, and Minato and Mitsuru did a demonstration on sabers and swords.
“Let’s go, Chie! I’ll race you!” Akihiko said to the brown-haired girl, just as Goro’s flashback ended.
Makoto backed up to join Goro.
“Think we should join them?” She asked
“Of course we should, Queen.”
And they both bolted off to join them.
*after the ticket*
“So, a special diet, huh? You know they’re gonna cave. Aunt Nao’s been trying and failing for years.” Goro whispered to her.
“I know, but I might as well give it a shot, huh?”
Meanwhile, in the background, Minato and Yukiko are chatting.
“God, why is she so similar to both of them? They never told us what year they were from... Do you think that maybe they left us for each other or something and had her?” Yukiko said to him.
“No... that’s crazy. At least I hope not.” Minato replied to her.
“I mean, if they’d be happier with each other, then I’d accept it. Because I love her too much to not see her happy.”
“Yeah, same.”
“Ugh, I’m weirdly jealous. I mean, it might not even be true.”
“Yeah...”
And a few more battles in ??? later...
“Ugh!” Yosuke said, as he collapsed in a heap.
“Partner!” Yu said, as he took out the shadow and bolted to Yosuke’s side. “Yosuke, are you alright?!” His voice going a few octaves higher than it normally would.
Makoto gets another flashback.
“Partner?” Yu asks a half-asleep Yosuke, as they watch a movie. “Come on, we’re with Makoto and Goro. Weren’t you the one who wanted to watch this movie?”
Yosuke plants a sloppy kiss on Yu’s cheek
“Yeah, but I’m tired. I mostly wanted an excuse to spend time with you.”
Yu had the tiniest hint of a blush on his face.
Makoto and Goro stopped watching the movie in favor of watching the romcom taking place right next to them on the couch.
“P-partner please there are children watching”
“Aw, getting flustered already?”
“Mako-chan! Behind you!” Haru screeched out
Makoto dodged it and kicked it in the face to kill it.
“Thanks, babe!” She yelled to her as she got back onto her feet.
Akihiko walked up to her, and asked “Are you alright?”
“Yeah thanks u- Akihiko-san”
Phew, that was close she thought to herself.
Meanwhile, back to the salty s/os...
“She cut herself off. She was going to call him something different. It seems more and more likely that Akihiko’s her dad.” Yukiko muttered.
“Earlier, I think she did the same thing to Chie.” Minato whispered back.
“I’m so fucking jealous”
“God, same”
“Ooh, my brother’s jealous, huh?” Minako said, as she popped in.
“Minako-!” He said back to her.
*back in the theater*
Hikari clapped her hands as she welcomed them back.
“Yeah! No sweat! Eff those shadows!” Ryuji said as he threw his fist into the air.
“I still don’t understand why you can’t just say fuck, like the rest of us.” Chie said to him.
“Well, you see...” Ren started. “My boyfriend here is a total momma’s boy. We love him for it. His mom told him to never say fuck, so he doesn’t. He loves his mom. And so do we. She’s basically all our mom now.”
“Yeah, I still remember the look of horror on her face when I said it around her!” Ann said to everyone else.
Ren planted a soft kiss on Ryuji’s cheek.
“Ugh, why is everyone so affectionate here?! I miss my sweet Chidorita...” Junpei exclaimed.
“Oh yeah, same. I miss Shiho so much. I should take her out for crepes when we get home.” Ann said.
And then
“Whoa, the room just got a bit colder...”
“I can feel it. Someone’s salty.”
“It’s coming from... over there!” And Junpei points to an obviously pissed off Yukiko and a Wildcard Mode Minato.
“Okay, what are you two so salty about?” Ann asks them.
And then Minato does his catchphrase. “I don’t care”
“Aw, are your s/os not paying enough attention to you two?” Ren teases.
Minato’s hand slightly curled and the other three protags show their shock.
“Guys! What has you all going insane?!” Ann screams out.
“That thing Minato did with his hand? That’s the wildcard equivalent of ‘I’m gonna cut a bitch’” Ren explains.
“...That little hand thing?”
“Yeah!!”
“Okay, but that still leaves the question, why?”
“That, I don’t know.”
“I’m just going to say it!” Yukiko says, with barely restrained anger
“Makoto, what were your parents names?” She asks.
“Wait! Hold the fuck up! If you’re thinking what I think you’re thinking, you’re wrong! I’m Ken’s age! I’m not the child of anyone here!” Makoto screams out in a single breath.
“Oh. Well now I just feel like an idiot.” Yukiko says.
Minato rubs the back of his neck with his hand and blushes just the tiniest bit.
And Makoto gets another flashback.
“Hey! Uncle Mina! Didn’t you say that Aunt Mitzi and Uncle Aki were teaching you french? Could you help me with my homework?” Makoto asks.
“I’m... not very good, but alright.”
“It’s just a reading assignment. We’ll be fine.”
Goro gives a small smirk from where he’s sitting on the dorm couch.
“What is it supposed to be?” Minato asks the girl.
“I don’t know, just read it!” She yells out.
“Okay, okay!” He chuckles as he starts translating it
“My love, your hair is as soft as a flower’s petals, yet your heart is thorned. Never to let anyone too close. I’m glad that you let me and everyone else into your heart. I never thought I had an eye for beauty, until I saw your face. I’ve traveled the world, and yet I’ve always wanted to come home to you. You’re a warrior. And I’d like to fight by your side until the end. So, will you be by my side forever? Love-” Minato choked on the last word. He dropped the letter and slammed his hands over his mouth. He turned around, not quite trusting his voice. There, Akihiko Sanada sat, blushing so hard that it seemed he might pass out. Minato thought a nod yes would suffice. It did. The entire dorm went up in cheers and everyone was excited for the newly engaged couple.
Makoto loved that memory. She always thought it was romantic, the way he proposed.
So when she saw them on the couch, Minato asleep on his boyfriend’s shoulder, she was happy knowing that a couple who fights together, stays together.
But there’s something more important to do, soon. After Minato wakes up.
After he does wake up, Makoto finally challenges Akihiko and Chie to a fight.
“A fight?” Chie asks her
“Well, a training bout.” Makoto says. “Both of you, against me.”
“If you insist.” Akihiko says, and he throws a punch that Makoto dodges easily.
“Too easy! Give me a challenge at least!”
Chie throws out a kick. Another dodge. And Makoto takes out her leg from under her.
“Huh!” Chie screams, as she collapses into a heap.
“Chie!” Yukiko screams from the back.
“That’s one down!” Ren screams from the back.
Another punch. Makoto pirouettes out of the way.
“That all you can do?!” She taunts him
Akihiko’s temper gets the better of him. Makoto smirks. He leaves his stomach exposed for a split second. Makoto throws as much force as she can behind a punch directly to his gut
Makoto shakes out her hand, as Akihiko goes crumbling to the floor.
“Damn. I’m impressed.” Mitsuru says from the back. “Are the two of you alright?”
“Yeah, I’m fine” Chie tells the redhead.
“Same here.” Akihiko says as he brings himself to his feet.
And then their eyes start sparkling. Makoto’s bombarded with questions.
Makoto and Goro have the same flashback at the same time.
“Alright, is everyone ready?” Minako asks the kids, who are holding wooden weapons. She kicks off a training match between Goro, Makoto, and Ken.
(Everyone knows Ken’s going to win, but it’s good experience for the others.)
Unfortunately, Ken forgets that this is a training match. He puts too much force behind his hits and accidentally knocks Makoto’s arm so hard that he dislocates her shoulder.
“Ow, damn!” She mutters out, not wanting to seem weak.
“Sorry, sorry!” Ken yells as he throws the wooden lance to the side and runs over to her.
Yukari runs over to her side and starts to examine it. She sighs in relief. “It’s okay, we just need to pop it back in.”
The entire dorm sighs in relief.
Yukiko plops down on Makoto’s other side, and grabs her hand.
“Look at me, alright?” She tells the girl.
Yukari pops here shoulder back in, which gives her pain for a split-second, until a cool, soothing sensation permeates her body
Looking back on it now, Yukari had probably used diarahan on her.
“-oach? Coach? Coach!” Chie’s voice snapped her back to the present.
“I’m sorry, I got distracted. What were you saying?” She asked the brown-haired girl.
“Makoto, are you feeling alright? You seem a bit out of it.” Akihiko asked her.
“I’m fine” she says. She’s a liar.
*another run in ??? later*
“Makoto-san, I’ve been wondering. How did you learn to be so good at riding a motorcycle?” Mitsuru asks her.
You taught me! She thinks
“Johanna taught me. She is a part of me after all!” Makoto quickly says, trying to act casual.
It seems to satisfy the red-headed executioner, as she walks away.
Flashback time~
“Mitsuru, I swear to god if you take her out on your motorcycle-” Akihiko starts
“She’ll be fine! We’ll be with her!” Yukari replies
“That’s what I’m worried about! Mitsuru, you once used a pileup as a ramp, and Yukari, you once took a sharp turn on an icy road so fast that we almost skid into another car!”
“Just because you can’t handle the way I drive-” Mitsuru starts
“You once told me ‘I paid for the whole speedometer, I’m using the whole speedometer!’”
“Exactly!” Yukari replied to him.
“...I’m not going to talk you out of this, now am I?”
“Not even close!” They both replied, in unison.
“You two are perfect for each other... just don’t get yourselves killed.”
And that was the day that Makoto learned how to ride a motorcycle like a maniac, with a crash course from Mitsuru and Yukari.
Makoto literally drives herself off a tree.
“Mafreidyne!” She screams, and takes out the shadows.
She returns her mask and walks with the rest of the group.
Surrounded by all three of her families, she thought that this alternate dimension thing might not be so bad after all.

My Review of Given
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*this exists* Huh? Fuck Isekai shit! GIMME SOME BL LIKE YESTERDAY! Yes, I know what I said before but…it’s an anime with boys and music! Could this be the next Gravitation that many of us have waited for?
Tumblr media
Ritsuka Uenoyama on the outside has always seemed listless when it comes to many things and can’t be bothered with most people or demands. One day, he was about to take a nap in a stairwell when he comes across another student by the name of Mafuyu Satou. At first glance he’s pretty aloof, but the second Mafuyu met Uenoyama he couldn’t stop hanging around him. After having quite the hard past, Mafuyu took to Uenoyama’s kindness (or whatever you call it) and took a fascination with him. He even managed to join the band Uenoyama was in. While Uenoyama had his reservations over this sudden change, he finds himself dealing with feelings he’s never felt before.
Tumblr media
Is this love that he’s feeling? God, I hope so! BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: At the moment, no licensors have taken this anime and it’s only available through Crunchyroll. I swear Yuuma Uchida is having one hell of a year in the anime voice world. I know he’s been around for a couple of years and really hit it off with roles on Banana Fish and ReLIFE. But this year with his main roles on Kono Oto Tomare and the Fruits Basket reboot have really given him quite the boost. Give this boy a Seiyuu Award! Here’s what you might recognize these folks from. *Uenoyama is played by Yuuma Uchida (known for Kyo on Fruits Basket 2019, Eiji Ootori on UtaPri, Chika on Kono Oto Tomare, Ash on Banana Fish, Ooga on ReLIFE, and Shirazu on Tokyo Ghoul :re) *Mafuyu is played by Shougo Yano (known for Nanao on Tsurune) DISLIKED CHARACTER: In a yaoi-esque series, what is the one element I despise more than life itself? The cock-blocker! Actually, this is a trait I see in other genres of animes. Simply put, these are the characters who think they know one character better than anybody else and have this aura of jealousy because some new guy is in the picture. But when I see an annoying bitch hanging around a potentially cute ship and cock-blocking the cuteness, I lose my shit!
Tumblr media
Fuck is this lady’s name? Kasai?! Whatever, cock-blocks like you need to go away! Though I will give her some leeway as she does apologize later in the series! It’s just that I found what she did to Uenoyama to be a bit of a “dick-move”. I’ll just be happy if I don’t see her in any upcoming projects this series has. SHIPPING: I knew I was expecting something to eventually happen with the Uenoyama x Satou ship. But I didn’t expect much from Haruki x Aki! Let’s get crackin’!
Tumblr media
*Uenoyama x Mafuyu: From the beginning, I'm like, I want this to happen one day…but I know Mafuyu is still in pain after losing the love of his life. For the majority of this series, I see Mafuyu being aloof and depressed. The only exception is when he’s playing the guitar with Uenoyama (at least at the beginning). As we all know, Mafuyu has been in pain ever since losing his best friend and boyfriend, Yuki a year prior. As for Uenoyama, feelings started to develop once he spent a lot more time with Mafuyu. We even get a realization for Uenoyama when he learned about Mafuyu’s love, he got jealous. Aw, our boy loves Mafuyu! I’ll delve deeper into what happens after a certain point in the ending.
Tumblr media
*Haruki x Aki: So I didn’t expect any kind of chemistry with these two outside of the band. But it turns out Haruki has had a crush on Aki since meeting him at college. Their friendship and becoming bandmates kind of came without any kind of super drama. And Haruki has been able to keep his feelings in check when he’s playing in the band with Aki. I mean, Haruki is pretty strict about dipping your pen in the company ink (if you get my meaning). It’s just that he does get blushy when he’s super close to him. Like when he’s being pinned down on the bed because Aki had a few too many beers and Haruki is just embarrassed. Unfortunately for this ship and for Haruki…Aki has a boyfriend!
Tumblr media
I don’t like Aki’s boyfriend. No way, no way, I think he needs a new one! *sighs* …Yeah, I gotta talk about it…
Tumblr media
*Mafuyu x Yuki: So Yuki’s reveal was building throughout the series that made the audience wonder if this was an unrequited love of Mafuyu’s, a sensei who can’t love him now, or someone who is no longer with us. But once you understood that Mafuyu and Yuki’s relationship dates back to when they were children and they have such a history, you can feel that pain Mafuyu carries with him everyday. Yuki would be there for him during tough times, including dealing with an abusive father, yeah, our boy had some issues. Yuki was a seemingly good friend and lover to Mafuyu. There was even a cute moment when Yuki takes him to the ocean, saying he wants Mafuyu to remember this moment. But what happened to Yuki? Unfortunately after the boys began high school and went to different schools, their relationship strained. And then one day Yuki was found dead due to alcohol poisoning (weird, I would have guessed suicide). Yes, Yuki’s death was freakin’ traumatic for Mafuyu. This was a big enough shock to the system to cause him to not be social and to carry around his dead lover’s guitar everywhere (even though he doesn’t know how to play it). And yes, in that song the group sang in the 9th episode, Mafuyu went the extra mile to express his feelings to his long-lost love. I would have to wonder a bunch of ‘what ifs’ with Yuki. Because poor Uenoyama is fighting against a dead guy. MAFUYU’S SONG: Just watch.
youtube
My boy Mafuyu here is giving me some super feels with this song!
Tumblr media
EPISODE TITLES: Ever notice how all the episode titles are named after famous songs. Let’s just say I was thrown off when the episodes were named Creep (song by Radiohead), The Reason (song by Hoobastank), and Wonderwall (song by Oasis). God only knows what the name of the movie will be! I’ll laugh if it’s The Dope Show, Bittersweet Symphony, or I Alone. ENDING: So Haruki, Aki, and Uenoyama were given the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. Now the big question is if Mafuyu is up to the challenge of performing with the rest of the group. He only just recently joined the group and isn’t that great playing on the guitar. But the boys have hope with his vocals. He does have a good voice. It’s just that up until the night of the performance, Mafuyu hadn’t written down any lyrics. No question this boy has something to get off his chest, it’s just that Mafuyu was conflicted moments until they go on stage. It wasn’t until they were on stage where Mafuyu let out everything in their opening song. That heartbreak of losing the person you loved just shook the audience to its core and hit every single person there. Mafuyu’s friends were happy that he finally released all that pain he’s been holding in. Uenoyama’s classmates were inspired to hold onto the person they love tightly. And after the performance, we got our moment we fangirls have waited for since episode 1…
Tumblr media
A MOTHER-FLIPPIN’ KISSUUU! Although this kiss (while passionate), was kind of forgotten on Uenoyama’s side as he forgot what he did and Mafuyu caught a fever shortly after the performance. I know Uenoyama has been wanting to do this because throughout the series, we kept seeing the boy conflicted over him liking Mafuyu. He even got jealous over a dead guy! We know he likes Mafuyu and we know that kiss after Mafuyu's performance was more than just a "Good job, mate" kiss. So will Uenoyama's feelings be returned? After Uenoyama came to terms over what he did and Mafuyu recovered from his fever, Mafuyu took Uenoyama to the ocean. I know this was a little symbolic for Mafuyu as Yuki brought him there when they were dating. And while there, Mafuyu told Uenoyama that he liked him. And Uenoyama noticed that...
Tumblr media
IT’S MUTUAL! HIS LOVE IS MUTUAL! But then, Uenoyama remembers an ugly reality. Long before Mafuyu joined the band, the other guys were talking about a band breaking up over two of the bandmates getting involved with each other (romantically) and Uenoyama said some pretty…well, hypocritical things. That’s why many folks try to steer away from dating someone who’s a co-worker, a co-star, and in this case, bandmate. This is also a driving factor why Aki will never be the one to step up and tell Haruki he loves him. Haruki’s gotta be the one to leave that dickhead boyfriend of his. LEAVE HIM ALREADY! Regardless, Haruki and Aki are both happy for Uenoyama and Mafuyu’s new love. And now the boys feel refreshed in trying to come up with a second song, do a photo shoot, and even come up with a steady band name, “Given”. And so we get this cute end with a lingering hope that a season two will come and… Or a movie! Damn, that was fast, guys! Okay Crunchyroll, when this comes out, I want you guys to hop on it and get this movie in theaters. I don’t care if it’s in Seattle, just get it shown in WA. The ball is in your court now, don’t fuck this up! Also...
Tumblr media
Uenoyama, please protect this boy's smile. I like this anime! I have such a weakness for animes involving characters in bands. And believe it or not, it was not because of Gravitation. For me, it was because of NANA. I fell in love with the songs and the characters and the simple story. Now of course this anime fell way too close to Gravitation’s orbit and that’s because of the yaoi aspect. My only gripe is that we really only got one memorable song (aside from the opening and ending theme). But it’s only the beginning the way I see it. I hope that Mafuyu is able to sing some more. And with a new movie on the horizon, I’m severely hoping for a soundtrack filled with awesome music. Seriously, I will laugh if the title of the movie really is, Given: Bittersweet Symphony. I give a recommendation to those who love musical animes or those of you into Shounen-Ai. I’m into both and I don’t judge. Currently, Crunchyroll has all 11 episodes available for streaming.

Jashi Week-Day 2-Table For Two
Today’s drabble, a modern au in which a nervous Jack invites Ashi over for dinner. She accepts, but things go awkwardly all the way!
***Brace yourself, kind of long.
The sound of the school bell rang, signaling the end of another day. Seventeen year-old Shinjiro “Jack” Iwamatsu got out of his seat and grabbed his back pack and sighed before leaving the classroom with the other students. He asked Ashi to wait for him in the front of the building after school; he wanted to tell her something important. Jack headed to his locker to grab the rest of his stuff before heading outside. This was it. He was going to do it, he was going to to stop being scared and ask Ashi out on a dinner date.
Jack saw Ashi sitting patiently on a blue bench, backpack beside her, phone in her hand. She was smiling, so Jack hoped she was happy. And since she was in good mood, things could probably go a little smoother.
“Hi Ashi,” said Jack, walking up to her.
“Hello, Jack,” said Ashi. “Did you have a good day?”
“I sure did,” said Jack, already feeling the butterflies in his stomach. “Did you?”
“It was alright, just ready for the weekend,” said Ashi with a shrug.
“I’m ready for graduation,” said Jack. It was almost May, so senioritis had long ago kicked in.
“Yeah,” said Ashi chuckling.
“You want to walk home together? I mean, like we always do?” Jack asked.
“Of course,” said Ashi, smiling.
Jack and Ashi lived so close to the high school that they could walk to and from school by using the sidewalk and crossing over into their neighborhood. Jack lived on Franklin street, and Ashi lived only one block of a street down on Washington avenue. They had known each other since seventh grade. It seemed only destiny that Ashi had moved into Jack’s neighborhood and they had met and become friends. Both secretly liked each other, but were too nervous and too nervous about what their peers would say if they got together, until now.
Jack decided he didn’t want to waste anymore time, so he went in for it.
“Hey Ashi, I was wondering if you would like to go on a d- act-activity with me?” Jack said, stumbling up. He cursed himself for messing up already.
“Um...sure?” said Ashi with an amused, but slightly confused look on her face. “What kind of activity?”
“Well, I was wondering if maybe Friday we could hang over at my house, I could cook something, and we could watch a movie,” said Jack, rubbing the back of his head.
“You like to cook?” asked Ashi.
“I do!” said Jack. He knew how to cook some, but he still had trouble following certain recipes, knowing when to add certain ingredients, when to stir this, or boil that. But he was determined to try his best.
“So, what do you say?” asked Jack, hoping she would say yes and that he wasn’t embarrassing himself in any way.
“I thinks it’s a great idea, I’ll be there,” said Ashi with a smile.
“Great!” said Jack, smiling big. “Is six-thirty PM okay?”
“Sounds perfect,” said Ashi. “I’ll talk to my parents.”
“And I’ll talk to mine,” said Jack. He arrived at his house and they stared at each other silently for a few seconds.
“Well, I better go and get my math homework done,” said Ashi. “Plus, I have three out of my six other sisters who think just because they’re a couple minutes younger than me, they get to be the babies of the house. You know how that goes.”
“Yeah,” said Jack chuckling. “Well, see you tomorrow, and I hope to see you Friday.”
“Same to you Jack,” said Ashi. “See ya!”
Jack went inside his house, and Ashi walked on to her house.
Ashi asked her parents about going over to Jack’s house, and they said yes. Well, Ashi’s father wasn’t so sure at first, you know how fathers can be, but they had both agreed, so Ashi was happy. Jack’s parents said yes, that of course it was alright to bring Ashi over.
“Your father and I will just go upstairs and leave you two down here,” said Jack’s mother.
“Alright,” said Jack, with a smile.
“What will you be fixing for dinner?” asked Jack’s dad.
“I don’t know yet,” said Jack, rubbing the back of his head. “I need to think about it.”
“You could look in the cookbook,” said Jack’s mother, reaching on top of the fridge and pulling it down and handing it to Jack. Jack opened the cookbook and looked at the pages of different recipes to make, family recipes, passed down over the years, friend’s recipes, recipe’s from online.
“Now son, you don’t have to get too fancy, but whip up something nice, you know?” said Jack’s father.
“I understand,” said Jack, flipping pages. So many good recipe’s, but he was scared to try and cook one!
“Why not try the chicken and asparagus dish? It’s simpler than you think. Just follow the instructions step by step and you should be fine,” said his mother.
Jack nodded, but didn’t say a word. He knew he was bound to eff something up, he had a feeling.
When Ashi told Jack that her parents said it was okay to for her to come over to Jack’s house for dinner, he was excited.
“That’s great!” said Jack. He was nervous, but he couldn’t wait. “What movie do you want to watch?”
“I don’t know,” said Ashi. “What kind of movies do you have?”
“Spiderman, X-men, Fantastic Four, mostly action and comedy movies,” said Jack.
“One of my favorite movies is Howl’s Moving Castle, but you probably don’t have that,” said Ashi rubbing her arm.
“I have it on DVD,” said Jack.
“You do?” said Ashi excitedly.
“Yes,” said Jack. “If you want to watch that then it’s fine with me.” He smiled.
“Sounds like a plan,” said Ashi.
Friday finally arrived. The school day seemed to zoom by, and Jack and Ashi went home to get ready. Close to six, Ashi combed and brushed her hair, she put on a pink sundress with yellow flowers on it, and she sat at the vanity she and two of her other sisters shared, and put on a little foundation and lip gloss. Her sisters joked with her as she got dressed.
“I can’t believe little Ashi is going on a date with The Nerd,” said Avi, the “first-born.”
“He’s not a nerd,” said Ashi, reaching for her eye shadow.
“Does he even know how to cook?” asked Ami. “I bet he doesn’t even know how to boil some ramen noodles.”
Aki chuckled. “Watch him ask for help when he can’t tell if the water is boiling or not.”
“Come on you guys,” said Ashi angrily. “Please be nice. He’s gonna try his best.”
“Alright, alright,” said Avi. “Just remember that if you are unsure, number seven on the football team has his eye on you.”
“No thanks,” said Ashi, putting her makeup away. She wasn’t really interested in the football jock guys. Ashi said goodbye to her sisters and parents, and left the house and headed across the street. Meanwhile Jack was rushing to get everything prepared. He had gotten the casserole in the oven in the nick of time, but preparing it earlier had been nearly hell. First, he had totally overcooked the noodles and asparagus, but he hoped the cheese and the other spices would cover it up, that is, if he and Ashi could taste anything other than oregano, because he had accidentally shook the canister so hard, the top popped off and he had fumbled to catch it and so much of the herb had spilled into the casserole. Freaking out, he had dumped more cheese on top of everything in hopes it would mask it. He had also overcooked the chicken, and it looked dry. His parents had come down to check on him to see how everything was doing, and Jack told them that everything was okay and that the casserole was in the oven.
“Something smells a little funny, like too much oregano,” said Jack’s mother.
“Oh, well, I added just a tiny little extra because Ashi really likes that herb,” said Jack, lying.
Jack’s parents looked at each other then back at Jack.
“Well son, if you say so, good luck,” said Jack’s dad, patting his shoulder. Then his parents retreated back upstairs. Jack gulped. His parents already knew, he had probably messed up on something. Not long after, Jack was washing dishes when he heard the doorbell ring. He quickly moved away from the sink and in doing so, knocked into the vase of white roses he was keeping for Ashi when she arrived, and in doing so he managed to spill some water on the floor whilst keeping the vase from falling over.
“I’m coming!” cried Jack trying to hurry to the front door and he slipped in some of the water he spilled on the floor. Regaining his posture, Jack fixed his hair and clothes in the hall mirror, then he opened the door to see Ashi standing there, looking beautiful as always, but tonight, she looked exquisite.
“Hi!” said Jack, with a big smile.
“Hello,” said Ashi, returning the smile, what was all that noise I heard?”
“Oh, I, uh, just dropped something,” said Jack. “It’s all cool, come inside?”
“Gladly,” said Ashi, then she stepped inside, and Jack shut the door behind her.
“Mom, dad, Ashi’s here!” cried Jack, and a few seconds later, his parents came downstairs to greet her and give her a hug.
“Hello dear, you’re looking well,” said Jack’s mother. “Glad you could come on over here on this Friday night.”
“Me too,” said Ashi. She sniffed. “What’s that strong oregano smell?”
“That’s what we asked Jack, but he seems to be not telling us something,” said his mother. Jack shifted nervously. Ashi gave him a look.
“Well, we’ll be upstairs if you need us,” said Jack’s father, then he and his wife headed back upstairs.
“These are for you,” said Jack, handing Ashi the white roses.
“Aww, thank you Jack,” said Ashi, then she stood on her tippy toes and kissed him on the cheek.
Jack felt himself beginning to blush. If anything else unfortunate went down that night, at least he had the kiss on the cheek to remember it all by.
“Why is there water on the floor?” Ashi asked curiously.
“Oh, I tipped the vase by accident,” said Jack. He grabbed a paper towel and dropped to his knee’s and wiped up the water.
“Okay, well, that’s done, let’s pop in the movie, then we can fix our plates and eat!” said Jack. While Ashi took a seat, Jack booted up the DVD player. Still nervous about everything, he fumbled with the system for a few seconds, then he got the disc inside and got the movie playing.
“Something smells like it’s burning,” said Ashi.
Jack immediately ran into the kitchen and opened the oven.
“Heh, heh, I guess it would help if I didn’t burn the food,” He said chuckling nervously as he grabbed oven mitts to pull the dish out the oven, but he still managed to burn himself taking it out.
“Ouch! Dammit!” cried Jack, holding his pinkie finger.
“Are you alright?” asked Ashi, coming to his aid.
“Yeah, I think I should be good, just a tiny burn,” said Jack. He went to go run his finger under the water for a few seconds before slathering some Neosporin on it. Luckily, he managed to fix him and Ashi a plate, and carry it to the table with no issue; perhaps the rest of the evening would go over well.
“Well, this looks...appetizing,” said Ashi, looking down at her plate and poking at the crispy brown cheese crust that lay on top of the concoction on her plate.
Jack didn’t like how she hesitated before saying the word ‘appetizing’. Jack stirred the food on his plate before putting a forkful into his mouth. Ashi did the same.
“A little chewy,” said Ashi, talking about the chicken.
“Yes,” said Jack nervously.
Ashi swallowed. “How much oregano did you put in here?”
“Well,” Jack began. He tried to think of some other explanation to tell her, other than that he was bad at cooking, and he was so nervous right now, but he couldn’t.
“Well, you see, the recipe and everything, it calls for a lot of stuff....you see... I-I tried to do it all right... but then I couldn’t seem to understand....and then I-I”
“Jack!” said Ashi, reaching across the table and laying her hand on his. “It’s alright, we’ll go to Mcdonalds.” She smiled warmly. Jack couldn’t help but smile too.
“Mom, dad, we’re going to Mcdonalds!” cried Jack to his parents as he grabbed his keys.
“Okay!” was all Jack’s mother said. And so off they went. Jack and Ashi got a quarter pounder with cheese meal, and returned home, and sat on the couch and ate them while watching Howl’s Moving Castle.
“And so, the rest is history,” said Jack to his wedding guests, as he concluded his story on the microphone. Ashi sat smiling in her seat, makeup, jewelry, wedding dress and all. Her parents, Jack’s parents and sisters, who had heard the story a thousand times over the course of the five years they dated, were still greatly amused as though they were hearing it for the first time.
“It wasn’t the best official first date, but it remains special because it sparked something that we both knew, we would have our hearts for each other forever,” said Jack.
“Awww,” said all the wedding guests as Ashi teared up with joy.
“To longevity, peace, and happiness, forever and ever,” said Jack raising his champagne glass in toast.
“Forever,” said Ashi, and the rest of the guests, as they all too raised there glasses, and drank.
Phew! And there’s that! I hope it’s not terribly too long, but it is lengthy. I hope you enjoyed it! All credit for Jack’s “true” name goes to @sallychanscraps

Oricon News: aiko “May Dream” interview
Tumblr media
aiko’s album “May Dream” became her 3rd album at #1 on the Oricon charts in May. She’s been constantly active during the approximately 18 years since her debut as an artist, and is currently in the middle of a nationwide tour. Writer Yoshirei - who interviewed aiko at the end of 2012 - had the opportunity to speak with her in depth about her album and her concerts. This columnist is well-known for his culture and romance columns, and has also written book adaptations of romance movies... Will he reveal what’s on aiko’s mind too?
(Thank you parasmichael for the commission!)
When I’m spending time alone, sometimes I feel like I’m not sure where my dreams end and reality begins (laughs)
―― Your nationwide tour of Japan’s already begun. How does it feel?
aiko: I just finished the second performance of the tour (at the time of this interview). I’m doing some of my older songs on this tour, and it’s made me happy to hear the audience’s voices get louder depending on the song. It really feels like they’ve been waiting for this album, and the concerts.
―― What’s the reasoning behind the title?
aiko: I included the season in the titles when I released the albums “Sakura no Ki no Shita (Underneath the Cherry Tree)”, “Natsufuku (Summer Clothes)” and “Aki Soba ni Iru yo (Fall, I’m By Your Side)”, so they bring up memories and things about the time period they came out in. I guess you could say I’m able to make up different albums for each season. “May” can also mean ‘possibility’, so it has the added meaning of dreams coming true.
―― You’ve used the word ‘dream’ a lot in your songs.
aiko: Yes, I do. I write most of my songs when I’m at home alone. Even if I was just spending time with my friends, parents or staff members, once I’m in my room it’s like WHAM! The world and my whole concept of time just changes.
―― You feel like you’ve changed channels, almost.
aiko: Yeah. I’m always doing things on my own and staying up late. When I’m in my house thinking about things and daydreaming, time passes but there’s this place in my head where everything’s just stopped. It’s sort of like I’m not sure where my dreams end and reality begins. (laughs)
―― Dreams and reality seem to be parallel worlds in a lot of your songs.
aiko: They are, aren’t they? I was going for that with this album especially. The songs all got started with something that actually happened but the rest of the song develops within dreams.
Lately I’ve come to accept that I’m fine with living my life freely
―― I hope you don’t mind me going back to my impression of the album, but I thought it was excellent. Your last album “Awa no You na Ai Datta (Our Love Was Like a Bubble)” was so gutsy and almost manly for a woman. This album is also bold in its own way. It’s pretty standard to describe your work as ‘bittersweet’, ‘cute’ or ‘impassioned’, but this time you also seemed really cool and just downright profound to me.
aiko: That makes me so happy! Thank you very much.
―― I feel like you’ve made some huge changes. Not just the new arrangers that worked on the album. Maybe something psychologically too?
aiko: I think that started a little bit before “Awa no You na Ai Datta”. I’ve been wanting to change, even if it happens slowly, and I’ve wanted to try new things. I find myself unconsciously resisting new things too, and sometimes people disapprove at first. But I wasn’t worried by that-- I’d already made up my mind to try. I think that’s how I was able to make a changeup song like “Yume Miru Sukima (Room to Dream)” a single.
―― I really like that song. It feels like a brilliant daydream that’s gone in an instant.
aiko: Thank you very much.
―― Speaking of which, a few months ago you said that you used to worry a lot about what people thought of you, but now you don’t really mind if people hate you aside from the people who are important to you.
aiko: I’m finally at that age now! It was one of my big hang-ups. Like, I worried about not waking up in the morning and eating three square meals a day ― living a ‘normal’ life ― or about not being able to say what was on my mind the right way. I didn’t have any self confidence except for those moments when I was writing songs by myself. I lived my whole life wondering to do. But lately I’m just like, “It’s fine, I’ll live my life freely.”
―― You’ve come to accept yourself the way you are. (laughs)
aiko: I’ve accepted both the good and the bad. (laughs) So now I’m gonna give each and every one of my dreams a shape, one at a time. From now on I’m gonna take all those precious things that vanished like dreams in the blink of an eye, and give them all a form in my head. From now on I’ll live my life, eating my dreams as I go.
―― So you’ve gotten stronger, but you also spend more time deep inside your own head. Would you say the way you live life is the same way you make music then?
aiko: Maybe so. I’ve been spending more and more of my days off alone at home. (laughs) But I made an album, and it’s fun to me so I guess it’s fine. I might just be super aggressive by the next time we see each other though!
―― I interviewed you three years ago in 2012... Did that happen then too? (laughs)
aiko: No. (laughs) Maybe I won’t really change all that much. But that’s not something I can help either.
―― Didn’t you talk about your childhood the other day when you were on (the Fuji TV show) “Bokura no Jidai (Our Era)”? You said, “On the outside I played more actively and diplomatically than anyone else, but when I got home I stayed in my room and all I did was listen to the radio on my headphones alone.” I think there’s a connection there with the current you, aiko. Now that you’re 40, you’ve accepted both those sides of yourself and unified them.
aiko: Yeah, exactly!
―― The aiko who almost can’t get enough communication during her concerts, and the aiko who dreams all by herself co-exist together.
aiko: I think so too.
I’m able to better immerse myself in writing music when I’m having some kind of problem
―― Let’s talk more specifically about the songs. I thought the first song “Nanji Nanpun (What Time is It?)” was especially amazing. The arrangement of the melody and the story that plays out in the lyrics was so unexpected. How should I put it... it’s got some drama. It was exciting.
aiko: I guess it is surprising that I started the song with Kansai slang. I wasn’t sure if people outside of Kansai would understand. (laughs)
―― It starts with you looking for a piece of candy and finding a ring you meant to throw away, though. (laughs)
aiko: That really did happen to me. I was rummaging through my bag for a cough drop that day and found something that made me go, “Oh, so THAT’s where it was!” That “How come I couldn’t find it when I was looking for it before?” feeling is what started it all.
―― The fourth line in the first verse is very symbolic. You’re thinking about the things you lost together while you were in a romantic relationship, and the things you were looking for.
aiko: I’ve always had a bad habit of leaving important things all over the place like some kind of treasure hunt. And sometimes, I forget where I put them. I look and look but can’t find it, and then after a few years pass I find it and go, “A-HA! You were here all along!” It’s almost a game to me. (laughs)
―― You mysteriously find things after you’ve stopped looking for them. (laughs)
aiko: Yeah. Sometimes I’m happy to find things, but sometimes bad things happen because of it, or it’s already stopped being important to me by the time I find it, or it even turns into something I’m glad I lost. That’s sad. The song came about because it’s been a bad habit of mine for a while.
―― Speaking of relationships between lovers, it’s sort of like when you both can’t bring yourself to say the things you really want to say and end up growing apart because of it.
aiko: Right. In this song, it’s over because they did that and slowly grew apart.
―― In the first half you’re mostly narrating, but then you get to the chorus and the melody soars for a fleeting moment. The words ‘goodbye’ and ‘I love you’ are repeated, and your vocals are so passionate. The surprise attack made my eyes water.
aiko: I sang the second half of it very naturally and emotionally. Is that how people feel way when they hear me? I’d be so happy if that were the case.
―― By the way, when did you write the song?
aiko: It was this February [2016]. This album has a lot of recent songs on it. To me it feels like I was able to make my current everyday life into an album.
―― But there’s a lot more profoundly sad and heartbroken songs on it than usual. (laughs)
aiko: There are, aren’t there? (laughs)
―― You’ve said before that you write sad songs when you’re feeling happy, though.
aiko: Yes. (laughs) It doesn’t matter whether I’m happy or unhappy, I’m able to better immerse myself in writing when I’m having some kind of problem. Being sad or frustrated or negative feeds into that better than being happy, which turns on my songwriting switch.
―― You’re just a very sensitive person. Do you have a really hard time when sad things happen to you?
aiko: I do! (laughs) It only gets easier for me when I’m able to turn it into a song. Lately I’ve been getting letters from people who listen to those songs telling me they feel the same way though. I tell ‘em not to worry about it ‘cause there’s actually quite a few awkward girls out there. Maybe there’s about the same proportion of guys like that out there too. Now I’m like, “Oh well, whatever then!” (laughs)
―― (laughs)
aiko: I have pretty extreme emotional ups and downs, and I tend to nitpick. Even though there might just be a lot of difficult and painful things that happen to me, I just enjoy myself anyway now. It might bother any partner of mine, but even that’s not really a bad thing. (laughs) I’m pretty sure there’s someone out there who can accept me just the way I am.
―― Oh wow, you’ve achieved enlightenment there. Didn’t you say on TV once that an old lover told you that if they dated you, to leave him out of your songs?
aiko: Yeah! That... fell on deaf ears. (laughs)
―― You said it yourself, you get self-contained in your own daydreams. You probably seem very mischievous and flighty from your his point of view. (laughs)
aiko: Hey now! I really do think about what I should be doin’ all the time. (laughs) But it IS true that whatever I’m feeling from moment to moment ends up in the song I’m writing. I have so much fun in my head when I’m alone that sometimes when I go see my lover, I come off really cold. That even makes me feel bad.
―― That’s because you’ve always been so romance-oriented.
aiko: Whaa!? Speaking of which, a long time ago someone told me I’d be in love my whole life. People kept telling me so many times I’ve lost track. And I thought, “That’s not true!” I guess I’m just alright with thinking by myself and playing make-believe in my head.
―― I think no matter which path you end up taking, you’ll be falling in love your entire life.
aiko: You sound like a fortune-teller. (laughs)
Now that I’m over 40, I’d rather just have fun
―― “Kakera no Kokoro (My Heart, in Pieces)” looks back on your teen years, and to me it felt linked to the last track “Aoi Hi (Blue Days)” because the words ‘dream’ and ‘star’ come up in both songs. You keep dreaming all by yourself, but also keep hoping to look at the stars with someone else.
aiko: That was a completely unconscious thing. I think my hopes and prayers came through there.
―― The thought ‘Someday...’ in “Aoi Hi” is pretty hopeful.
aiko: But I’m not sure when that will be. (laughs)
―― When “Yume no Naka no Massugu na Michi (The Straight Path in My Dreams)” came out (in 2005), you talked about wanting to keep walking down the road you were on even though you couldn’t see what was up ahead, which shares ties with the song “Tunnel” (on the album “BABY”). Wouldn’t you say that song is about hoping you’ll be able to walk with someone even though you’ve broken up with your lover, while still walking down the path you personally believe in?
aiko: Yeah, exactly.
―― As I listen to the last track “Aoi Hi”, you’re still walking down that same path now, aiko. And you’re hoping to see the people you’ve met and love so far again someday.
aiko: Different people all walk down their own different paths in life. I just hope I’ll get to see them again in the end, and when I do, I’ve always hoped that I’ll be able to stand there and be proud. I wanna ask them how they’ve been with a smile on my face. It’s something I’ve always thought. There’s a line in “Eriashi (Back of Your Neck” (2003) about it too that goes, “If I find you 5 years from now / I’ll hold my head high and say hello”.
―― That’s right! You joked lately that you’re sort of wanting to get married now. You’ve been walking down your own path. I’m sure you’re just waiting for someone to come along at the right time.
aiko: I am. I definitely wouldn’t get married or nothin’ just ‘cause. Music is an absolute for me. If I fall in love in a split second, it might happen pretty fast though. (laughs)
―― As someone in the same situation, it’s one of those “If it’s not meant to be, it’s not meant to be” sort of things.
aiko: I totally get that! (laughs) Now that I’m over 40, I’d rather just have fun. Although I’ve had plenty of fun already. (laughs)
―― It gives you the guts to say that either way, things will turn out just fine. (laughs)
aiko: It really does! I’m gonna make the whole world try that. (laughs) I wanna have fun whether I’m alone or with somebody. The only thing I can really do when things are hard or sad is enjoy myself anyway. Being like, “Oh, it’s fine! I can just write a song!” helps me brace for the worst. (laughs)
―― Our last question’s pretty standard. (laughs) What are the dreams you’d like to have now, and the view you’d like to see?
aiko: Hmmm. First and foremost would be to stand on stage with a smile after singing my heart out at the very end of a concert.
―― That’s a dream you keep making come true, right?
aiko: But, more. ...Recently I’ve been dreaming about how there’s no such thing as a ticket to show up in the dreams of the guy who’s been on my mind 15 times. (laughs)
―― He’d fall in love with you if he dreamed about you 15 times for sure!
aiko: I’m always thinking to myself, “They don’t sell that.” I want a ticket that makes me appear in his dreams instead of love potions.
―― Wouldn’t a love potion be faster?
aiko: Nah, that’s too direct for me. (laughs)
―― Hahaha!
aiko: I wanna be in the dreams of people I haven’t even met yet. (laughs)

The best dog names, and how to name your puppy
Naming your family pet is one of  the most beautiful moment when owning a pet. Petbacker has been committed to help pet owners to decide how they should name their pets, and it took Petbacker more than 2 years to conduct a comprehensive surveys and gathered information from 400,000 pet owners in regard to the questions of “why you give this precious name to your dog” , “does the dog name match your character of your pet”, as well as “do you name your dog based on their breed”.
Based on our surveys, we want to share with all pet’s owner some inspiring and fun ideas that are relevant to giving names for your fur babies!
For instance, we found that many owners named their pets after childhood movie characters, famous celebrities, their human friend, different seasons of the year etc. It is amazingly shocking to note that there are even pet owners who named their pets based on numerological method.
Method that owners use to name their pets.
Tumblr media
Less than 4.5% of owners named their Pets based on Seasons of the year
Each season represents its special meaning. Some owners love to name their dogs based on the seasons and months which they were born such as spring, summer, autumn and winter. For example, babies who were born during spring season can be named Haru, in Japanese, ha ru は る) means spring. Some babies who are brought home by their owners in summer are directly named as summer. For babies born in the cold winter, they can be named as winter.
From the above ideas, the following are some of the names which you may take into consideration:
Spring - Asher, Abril, Lily or Spring rolls
Summer - Sunny, Lia, Lilac or Summer ball
Autumn - Pablo, Raven, Mooncake or Cinnamon
Winter - Polar, Santa, Sparkle or Gabby
More than 55.2% of owners named their Pets based on Human Names
Human names make great and meaningful names for dogs and puppies too. If your dog loves running, you may consider one of the suggested human names below to give him or her some cool attitudes.
Female dogs can be named as Anne, Anna, Angel, Alice, Lucy, Emily, Juliet, Amy, etc. Alternatively, the owner can use the characters from TV series as reference. Male dogs can be named as Jack, Nick, Mike, Peter, David, Henry, Irwin etc.
Less than 4.1% of owners named their Pets based on Foodie Name
Food naming method is also a very popular naming method. The pet owner can base on food names according to their pets’ fur colours or their own favourite food.
White fur – Tofu, Cauliflower, Onion, Garlic
Yellow-ish fur – Milk Tea, Coffee, Potato, Banana
Black fur - Cola, Sesame, Pepper, Seaweed
You can also call these little guys directly with your favourite snacks, such as pudding, buns, milkshake, noodle, cheese, cupcake, dumplings and other food.
To our surprise, about 30.3% of owners named their Pets based on Numerology method
Pet owners can actually name their pets using numerology naming method, owners will count the number belonging to their pets by deriving it from the dates of birth of their pets, and put a name that matches the pet birthday so the pet will have the character they want to have.
This can be done by finding the pet Life Path number, these Number can be obtained by adding the birthday numbers together until you get a single digit, for an example, a pet was born in November 14th, 2018, it would be = 1+1+1+4+2+0+1+8 = 18 = 1+8 = 9 …, So their Life Path is a “9”.
With the life path number, they will then decide what name to give so the number changes slightly to what they wanted. How to count a name with number so they add together to become single number.
For an example EDDY, E= 5,D=4,D=4,Y= 25 =2+5=7
Birthday date + Name = 9+7=16
The final digit would be, 1+6=7
Here you go ! Your best friend Life Path Number is a “7” .
Here are some of the attributes of the different Numbers :
Number 1, is a number that represents Self, and it brings a very independent character. If your pet has a name that reduces to “1”, you expect them to be more independent, this pet will probably be headstrong! Your best friend is going to do what it wants to, so be patient. They can make excellent guard dogs or protective animals.
Number 2, this is a Number of Cooperation and Relationships. This is the pet that will be happiest sitting in your lap! They will also like company, other pets, and humans. They don’t do well alone for extended periods. They can be naturally shy, and will dislike fireworks and thunderstorms.
Number 3, this is a Number of Creativity and Communication. With humans, they are likely to be on stage and often have a good sense of humour. They are quite social, and hyperactive, they love to be out & about, meeting new humans and other pets.
They are sometimes difficult to be trained due to a short attention span. They can be talkative too, so expect a lot of barking! They are typically good with children as they enjoy the busy energy that children brings.
Number 4, is a Number of Structure. Pets or animals with this Energy do best in structured environments. They like routines, such as feeding and training or exercise at the same times each day.
Number 5, This is a Number of High-Energy, Chaos and Adventure. These animals love adventure! They don’t like to be cooped up too. They love riding in cars, going for walks at the park. They might not be the best choice for small children, but they will be entertaining!
Number 6, This is the Number of The Nurturer. Ideally suited to home and family, this is a very devoted and loving animal. They love affection and are quick to give it too. They love to sleep in bed with you and will love cozy warm places to snuggle in. These dogs also make for the best service animals and can be trained to help a human who has disabilities.
Number 7, This is a Number of Intelligence and Curiosity. Your best friend would probably like games or toys that challenge them …plus learning Tricks too! But they often need their own space and time. They probably have their own favourite place, and it will probably be away from everyone else. They need space, so I hope your bed is big, or they will try to dominate the space!
Number 8, This is a Number of Abundance and Prosperity. They love studded collars, luxurious bed, even those animal-outfits! They love attention, and can be demanding. They are usually high-energy, be prepared to be lead around!
Number 9, This is a Number of The Philanthropist, Old Soul, Wisdom. They are Natural Leaders, but do not have a competitive streak, so not the best choice for a show animal. They are extremely sensitive. They know when you are hurting and when you are happy. They like a lot of physical contacts to assure that everything is alright.
Less than 3% of owners named their Pets based on Movie Character
Many young owners have their favourite cartoon characters, comic protagonists and so on. Hence, they can name their dogs by their favourite characters. For example, One Piece's Luffy, Qiaoba, Naruto, Kakashi, Doraemon etc.
About 2.9% of owners named their Pets based on Celebrity name
Pet owners do have their own favourite celebrities who they like and admire. Therefore, it’s pretty cool to name their pet according to the celebrity name, or the name of their fan club.
Imagine when he is running around on the street, and you call his name, people who passes by will think that there is a big star coming!
How to make your pets remember their name fast?
Giving a name to your pet is easy, but how do you want your pet to remember the name you gave or effect the change of name ASAP? We provide below some methods which you may adopt to make your pets remember their name.
1. Food temptation: After giving your dog a name, you need to patiently let him remember his name. One of the best ways is giving them food and treats!
2. Changing of tone: Under different circumstances, use different intonations to call the dog's name.
3. Name Tone: Calling names is limited to giving instructions and compliments, to give the dog a good impression. The next time you call its name, it will run to you right away.
After all the above suggestions, if you are still not sure of what name you give your dog, we would want to inspire you of what others named their dogs by sharing the names of the list below.

This is a list of my favourite films of the year. That sounds like a simple statement, but in some quarters the long-running arguments about what is and isn’t a film got very heated in 2017. Even the year bit of that can get very messy.
But for at least this one last time, I’m keeping things simple: these are the films I enjoyed most out of the ones that were released in UK cinemas in 2017.*
There were plenty of films I didn’t see: some I wanted to but didn’t get round to – Colossal is the one that stands out. Others I just wasn’t drawn to – Detroit, Dunkirk (give money to Christopher Nolan and he’ll only keep making movies) and the critically adored Call Me By Your Name (the super-annoying title probably didn’t help).
There were lots of movies I did see and like, though, and that’s what we’re here to talk about…
*This decision was made simpler because I didn’t love any of the films that Netflix streamed without even giving a token cinema release, which included Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New And Selected) and Sundance favourite I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore. The best of the bunch was The Incredible Jessica James.
Tumblr media
1. Manchester By The Sea
Back in October 2016, I wrote: ‘If a better film is released in the UK in 2017, I’ll be very impressed.’ Well, I have been impressed by the excellent movies below on this list, but none of them beat Manchester By The Sea as far as I’m concerned. In outline, it sounds like nothing special: a story of some grim stuff happening to a fairly ordinary family, in particular a bloke who likes to pick fights in bars and his teenage nephew. But writer-director Kenneth Lonergan turns the ingredients for a predictable drama into something very special, not least by lacing this grief-laden story with lots of (appropriately) funny moments.

2. The Handmaiden
A lot of the films on this list are fairly light on plot, so if you want a movie with scheming, counter-scheming and deception, not to mention pretty costumes, sex, cherry blossoms, perviness (its 18 certificate is richly earned) plus differing Korean views of their Japanese occupiers, this is the one. It’s directed by Park Chan-wook, best known for Old Boy, and loosely based on Sarah Waters’ Victorian-set melodrama Fingersmith, which turns out to be perfectly suited to Korea in the 1930s.

3. Certain Women
Resolutely low-key collection of three slightly overlapping short stories set in wintery Montana. It’s a character piece, with Laura Dern, Michelle Williams and (the excellent, previously little-known) Lily Gladstone leading each segment. Director Kelly Reichardt knows exactly who these women are, and how the place they live shapes them. It seems modest at first, but it stuck in my mind long after flashier films had faded away.

4. Moonlight
So much of what I read about Moonlight made it sound so much less interesting than it is. Around awards time, you could have easily formed the impression it was a heart-tugging issue movie, not helped by the campaign to get Naomi Harris an Oscar (‘Look! Pretty woman getting grubby to play junkie skank!’)**
What makes it a remarkable film – and it is a remarkable film – are the extraordinary cinematography and the telling of the story via often fragmentary scenes, and how little is explained, at least until the much more conventional, even theatrical (and thus slightly disappointing) final segment. Great moviemaking is about the how, not the what.

**The classic awards-season tendency to grade performances by perceived difficulty points led to people talking about Harris rather than the way better Janelle Monae.

5. The Happiest Day In The Life Of Olli Mäki
Lovely, bittersweet based-on-real-life tale of Mäki, a small man who was Finnish boxing’s big hope in the early 1960s. It’s not really a boxing film, more a story about two decent young people trying to work out what they want. Which probably doesn’t sound like the most gripping core of a film, but it works. My favourite Finnish film of the year, narrowly shading…

6. The Other Side Of Hope
Why should social realism be the only way of looking at problems like the refugee crisis? Aki Kaurismäki brings his taste for dramatic lighting, deadpan acting and vintage rock’n’roll to this story of a young Syrian braving bureaucracy and street racism in Helsinki. Less funny than most Kaurismäki films, but I found it very moving.

7. Spider-Man: Homecoming
I’ve had enough of super heroes on screen – Marvel’s The Defenders on Netflix was the last straw. I’m voting for a moratorium on them*** and gangsters. So it took a lot to persuade me to see yet another Spider-Man reboot. ‘Don’t think of it as an action movie, think of it as a high-school comedy,’ said my friend Jess, and she was right. It’s nimble and funny and doesn’t take itself too seriously – the best surprise of the year.

***I’m totally prepared to believe that Thor: Ragnarok is enjoyable in a bonkers, proggy kind of way, but I’m not risking it. Too many people insisted Captain America: Civil War was good.

8. The Death Of Stalin
After dealing with the (by comparison small) monsters of the Blair era in The Thick Of It, Armando Iannucci turns to the worst – by at least one measure – men in history: Beria, Molotov and Uncle Joe himself.
I don’t think by portraying the farcical nature of the days after Stalin’s death the film is disrespectful to all those who died. I think humour has always been part of how we confront the horror.
The Death Of Stalin has the best ensemble cast of the year – Jeffrey Tambor as Malenkov, Steve Buscemi as Khrushchev, Jason Isaacs giving the performance of his career as Marshal Zhukov, and – best of all – Simon Russell Beale as Beria. And, crucially, it’s definitely a film, not a bit of TV that has snuck on to the big screen.
Tumblr media
9. Daphne
Essentially, a classic US indie movie transplanted from Brooklyn to Walworth. The title character is a pretentious and self-centred 30-year-old failing to get her life together – she’s just like women I used to meet at parties in south London 10 or 15 years ago. That could make for a dull film, of course, but the writing, the feel for the place and Emily Beecham as Daphne make it funny and involving.

10. After The Storm
Once promising writer with a gambling problem becomes low-rent PI and uses his new skills to keep tabs on his ex. If you think you can imagine how this film goes from that description, you’re probably miles from Hirokazu Kore-eda’s typically patient, generous-spirited and occasionally funny family drama.

11. A Ghost Story
Or that one with the white-sheet-with-eye-holes phantom. A Ghost Story is definitely a film you either buy into or you don’t, an austere tale about grief and loss. I did, and found it sad and moving and pleasingly different.

12. Neruda
It’s a playful movie about a playful title character – the Chilean poet and dilettante politician during his dramatic time on the run from the authorities –  but Neruda has a melancholy underlying mood that rises to the surface as the film goes on. It’s a smart, complex and entertaining film.

13. The Florida Project
A group of small kids living in a low-rent long-stay motel have adventures and misbehave a bit. And that’s mostly it, with a few dips into the struggles of the mother of one of the kids, plus a sense of the endless patience and generosity of spirit of the motel manager (Willem Dafoe, the sole big name in the cast). What’s impressive is the way Sean Baker maintains a tone that manages to dodge both ‘look at what grindingly terrible lives poor folk lead’ and being a whimsical adorable-kids-running-wild picture. It does drag a little about three quarters of the way in, but the ending pulls it back.

14. La La Land
First it was an instant masterpiece that was going to change the game, then it was a deflating bubble as the haters managed to shout louder than the lovers. So which take on this nostalgia-soaked showbiz musical do I agree with? Well, there are problems with the film – mostly to do with director Damien Chazelle’s continuing attempts to foist his rotten ideology of music on the rest of us via his movies – but I think the people who were swooning were closer to the truth than the raspberry blowers.

15. Lady Macbeth
Bracingly bleak and at times hard to watch, this is very much in the anti-heritage industry counter-tradition of British period dramas. It’s about the rebellion of a young woman against a grim arranged marriage in Victorian Yorkshire, a struggle that makes strange and grim turns. Unpleasant, but an impressive and memorable piece of filmmaking.

16. Blade Of The Immortal
‘Blood-drenched’ would be an understatement when it comes to this gleefully violent supernatural samurai tale in which an almost unkillable ronin is hired by a young girl to revenge her father’s death. If it doesn’t match up to veteran director Takashi Miike’s kinetic 2010 masterpiece 13 Assassins, Blade Of The Immortal is still full of staggering set pieces. Not for the squeamish.

17. I Am Not Your Negro
In a variant on the title of this blog, I’d describe this documentary as kind of unsatisfactory yet powerful. It’s got a curious premise: it’s an ‘adaptation’ of a book that was only vaguely started: James Baldwin’s look at the meaning of the lives and deaths of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.
The result is a slightly rambling wander through what Baldwin wrote and said about black lives in America. The clips of Baldwin on TV and at the Oxford Union are electrifying. The chunks of his writing are beautifully read by Samuel L Jackson in a warm, wise deep oak-aged voice than sounds precisely nothing like either Samuel L Jackson or James Baldwin.
Dropped in around the place are news stills from the last couple of years by way of saying, ‘Yes, Obama made it to the presidency, but otherwise things are still fucked.’ That’s a bit clumsy and crude. What makes the film is Baldwin himself – a great writer (I’m still annoyed that someone nicked my copy of The Fire Next Time in 1991) but also a figure who confounds our condescension of past times: here was a black gay man who was an international public intellectual in the 1960s.

Scarface
Not every rapper’s favourite movie – this is the terrific 1932 original, a ripped-from-the-headlines account of the rise of a ruthless Chicago gangster that’s as electrifyingly urgent as current organised-crime dramas are weary.

Un Flic
Jean-Pierre Melville, whose career stretched from the 1940s to ’70s, made some of my favourite films ever – Bob Le Flambeur, Le Samurai, Army Of The Shadows – and the BFI showed all of them in a splendid full retrospective this autumn. Of the ones I’d never seen before, my favourite was Un Flic, his last film, a bleak, minimalist film in which a laconic, sadistic cop (Alain Delon) slowly gets on the trail of a heist crew. Moody, stylised and very cool.

The Cobweb
Over the top, and unashamedly so, Vincente Minnelli’s undervalued mid-’50s melodrama is set in a psychiatric clinic, has a great cast and a plot in which the choice of a set of curtains causes all manner of scheming, bitching and betrayal.

La Vérité
An uncharacteristically meaty role for Brigitte Bardot is at the centre of this courtroom drama from Henri-Georges Clouzot. BB plays a beatnik girl on trial for murder, but what made her do it and can a patriarchal justice system treat her fairly? I suspect this felt dated when it appeared in nouvelle vague-era Paris, but it seems pretty relevant now.

Salesman
Extraordinary documentary about a group of travelling salesman doing their damnedest to flog absurdly overpriced Bibles to low income Catholics in a late 1960s US where the Age of Aquarius most definitely isn’t in effect.
