Ikani is mostly self-aware of reality’s hardships yet tend to keep up an ‘’whatever goes, is what happen and I cannot potentially do anything to change that.’’ carefree, reckless, will only believe when she has seen attitude that pretends to be a healthy optimistic nihilist way of dealing with life but when unmasked turns out to be a faulty uncertain self-hate of pessimism that pretends to be optimistic or a realist way of thinking and solving problems. This can badly affects her creative ability to do any problem solving, thinking outside the box or standing up for herself and the people she loves alone unless she has encountered that situation before or has help from someone with far more experience. She does not rebel that much to authority or dictatorship as she believes rules are rules or the law is the law and whatever unintended consequences that follow or reports of abuse of power are normal and natural but she’s open-minded and adaptable enough to consider changing rules and regulations peacefully if she’s convinced or confident enough. Either way, Whatever happens is whatever happens in the present and she won’t make any effort to neither change or preserve any rules or laws that much. Backstory:

Ikani Rinyu was born as a second child to a worker class family (Rinyu family) who mostly had time for her. Many years went by and her parents had to focus on things they deemed far more important in order to sustain a family with regular income. Her family’s income condition worsened when the day before Ikani 7th birthday, She, her brother and her parents were robbed of a lot of yen at gun-point by a gang after they went to the store and bought a digital tablet for her as a gift (because they felt as if they were neglecting Ikani because of work). After the incident happened, Ikani's mother divorced with her husband because it turned out that Ikani's father had connections with the gang that robbed them and never told her about it. Another reason for her parents divorce is that both of her father and mother had an underlying conflict in which both were never really interested in each other and only agreed to marry back when they were friends so that they can decrease their tax and avoid debt and they both felt guilty about divorcing each other because both felt that they were selfish with their underlying mutual motivations for marriage, they were still saving up money and investing and couldn’t afford to divorce early, and that divorcing will affect their children greatly if they will be honest about it to them at an early age (suprise suprise, bottling up your feelings worsens everything, yourself and everyone around you). This robbery incident went mainstream after the time Ikani’s mother divorced Ikani’s father and her remaining family was secretly interviewed by a group of ''journalists'' and this is how (insert academy name) found and scouted Ikani just so they can replace and -cover up an ultimate's death.- So her mom and the group of journalists made a contract in exchange for financial gain and basically free education for Ikani and her brother and also medical + financial insurance. Ikani started setting things on fire (mostly flowers, sticks and wood) on ‘’accident’’ just to gain attention from her busy mom, brother and everyone else she was close to and was forming a relationship with, in which her ‘’habits’’ slowly spiralled and developed into impulsive Pyromania because she felt that she was never loved enough + with her parents divorce taking a toll on her (her brother tried to help but also didn't know what to do and was busy with their own school). Around this time, she also felt like eating would decrease her family's money greatly so she tried skipped eating snacks at school but not basic meals yet she still developed peptic ulcer. On her 11th birthday, Ikani’s brother finally took a stand and consulted a ‘’reliable’’ therapist/psychiatrist and a dietician (who helped with the insert academy's goals) despite it being expensive and discouraged by her mom. Her therapist/psychiatrist then noted to her parents that Ikani should focus more on expressing her emotions in more artistic and creative ways in order to cope with her bottled up emotions, trauma and urges and using the digital tablet she got at age 7 when everything was still relatively alright should be a good head start. Her dietician also helped her with resolving her peptic ulcer and convinced her that she shouldn't feel bad about eating extra snacks and set out a diet for her to follow. Soon, The academy’s contract money given to her parents was enough to sustain her creative urges as Ikani eventually learned to create moving and still digital artworks including complex 3d and photography by simply using her tablet that had limited features over the years despite her age as she contributed to many famous and iconic company logos, designs, presentations, artworks, animations, movies, edits and videos that are found in the media. Over the years, Ikani secretly wished that the contract would stop as that diverted corporate's financial wants for themselves because of her hidden relations with the academy journalists and she wishes she was never born and regretted that time she was too ''needy'' at age 7 (she shouldn't blame herself though) but never took her own ground against it to her mom as she felt like she was selfish for wanting to do something her mom didn't desire so she ended up ONLY EVER venting her emotions through her work/hobby and sometimes forgot how to express her emotions.

Reasons for acting the way she does during the killing game:

The reason why she doesn’t vent her emotions and only bottles it up during the killing game is because just like in the original Danganronpa series, Monokuma would confiscate your belongings that allowed access to communicating with the outside world (and it just turned out her only venting item was a digital tablet that would probably screw up Monokuma) Also, it’s because the idea of ‘’Survival of the Fittest.’’, ‘’Being weak will kill you.’’ and ‘’No time for crying because it is not yet over’’ is in her head all the time + fear of being impulsive again and accidentally resurfacing her Pyromania and basically rendering her brother’s efforts to help her with her problems useless so yeah she’s guilty of wanting to feel emotions so she eventually becomes numb to the things happening around her. All of these are her ways of justifying being emotionless, being unintentionally ignorant and coping with loss and grief in a dangerous game that could kill you any moment.

Most of the time, Cyl has a rather nihilistic and pessimistic (but sometimes, realistic and optimistic at times) views and mindsets of life and would rather die rather than following strict regulations // rules. Although he is a passive type of Nihilist and knows there isn’t that much value in life despite searching it (even with religion), He still is sort of a coward and ends up helping other people out of pity, jealousy, admiration or respect and will still be willing to fight for people’s rights things society deems unworthy despite the odds and his diminishing motivation on doing so. ― born and raised in los angeles, her parents moved to usa right after they got married in their mid twenties only because of the feeling of adventure. they both got stable jobs there and even though her mom was the one that struggled the most with the different language, with the help of her husband she was able to improve steadily.

― ever since she was young, inna has showcased exceptional skills when it came to drawing and painting (if you consider the crayon scattered all over the walls of their apartment back in los angeles as art). always restless, she got easily bored with the common toys and games, only truly finding joy in the coloring books her parents always got her instead of dolls and an easy bake oven.

― she has always been heavily spoiled by every member of their family and inna grew used to this. it was no surprise that she always got what she wanted with a simple smile and her trademark grabby hands (she still does this till now and it’s absolutely gross). the one that spoiled her the most was her brother.

― inna holds dear every member of her family and despite being the ultimate spoiled princess, she always offered help around the house when she became older and realized that everyone had to do something for their household. she hated washing dishes though and always traded that task with her brother to the point that it became a natural thing for him to wash them and for her to mop and take the trash out. to this day, she will avoid washing dishes at any cost and her apartment often has a pile of dirty dishes which only makes it worse when she runs out of clean ones.

― the divorce of her parents hit her hard (spoiler alert: her father was awful when no one was seeing and cheated a lot on her mom, which she forgave every damn time until he crossed the line and brought another girl to their place) mainly because she didn’t understand what was happening at the moment and no one took their time to explain it to her. it was difficult to deal with her behaviour back then, she threw really loud tantrums and demanded to see her father almost daily and, whenever this didn’t happen, she’d go on a silent protest by not doing anything they asked her to. it’s years later that she understands everything (thanks to an argument she had with her brother for defending her dad and he just exploded). this, of course, greatly disappointed her and made her feel bad for still standing by her dad’s side.

― after that, inna just like her brother, closed a little to their father even though he was still as kind, loving and caring as ever with them despite everything. his attitude made her doubt her mother and brother several times, but then came the first girlfriend he ever introduced to them, and then the second… and so on.

― it was obvious that her mother drastically changed after the divorce and this scared inna a lot: letting someone in and become vulnerable with them only to have your heart broken sounded absolutely painful. and she didn’t want that. plus, her mom’s constant reminders of how she can’t trust anyone that its not her or her brother stayed deeply engraved within her.

― she’s never had a stable relationship, if anything, the longer she’s “gone out” with someone is a couple of weeks and after that, she ghosted them with no remorse. inna has had crushes in the past, but rarely ever actively pursues someone unless she’s really curious or interested to know more about them. nonetheless, she's a bit of a flirt and tends to get clingy and touchy when she's comfortable/close enough with someone.

― school is difficult in every stage for her, always getting rather mediocre grades in most of her classes except those that required a more creative and practical approach. simply put: she was bad at theoric classes and anything related to math and physics. though, inna was always close to failing but never did so. this was just one of the many reasons she didn’t want to pursue a college education.

― the creation of her channel is all thanks to her brother, her self-proclaimed number one fan and the one person that’s always encouraged her to keep going with her art. he suggested the idea and told her that they could do a testing video to see how comfortable she felt with it before uploading it. turns out, inna was more than okay with the camera for it focused on her hands and process the whole time. voice over was not necessary back then but as her channel evolved, so did the quality and content of her videos. steadily, she introduced different aspects of herself, starting with her voice by doing easy-to-follow tutorials and later on, her face was revealed when doing an art haul video. this helped her become more comfortable with the camera and now, every couple of weeks she posts vlogs of her visits to museums or events or just updates for her community.

― despite her popularity and some people even recognising her on the streets, inna has never considered herself to be a celebrity. in fact, she feels awkward with the title for she considers her channel to be just another one. she appreciates though whenever her prints get sold out or when someone asks for her autograph and a photo or even when she is invited to events as a special guest.

― the kind to get really excited when talking about things she likes. don’t get her started on her favorite medium or her favorite painting because she might go on for twenty seven minutes straight about how watercolors are the superior medium to work with.

― she likes experimenting with any and every medium out there, particularly enjoying art subscription boxes that always surprised her and push her out of her comfort zone. her specialization is landscapes and character design, though she’s recently learning to draw more animals and plants.

A Visual Conversation: Meet Art Director Samantha Kallis

ArtCenter: What are you working on right now? Samantha Kallis (BA Illustration '10) Art Director of Development at Disney Television Animation: I can't give specifics, but broadly I work on Disney projects before they go into production. My job is to generate artwork in the early stages of the storytelling process, shepherding a project along until it's green lit.

I help the showrunner or creators figure out visually what they're going to say. It's more like a visual conversation. I'm just planting seeds because eventually another art director will come in after me. It's just enough to draw out the core story points, so those who end up making the show can have their own voice.

AC: What’s the most unique thing you’ve designed? SK: As animation evolves, I’m constantly thinking about how my work also has to evolve. I’m seeing a big movement toward the VR space — if viewing is headed in this direction, it poses a whole new area of visual problem-solving. I've been trying to figure out how to design for a medium that might go beyond linear narrative since the audience in VR can look wherever they want.

AC: How do you define success? SK: For me, success has never truly been tied to the work. It's about doing something that allows me to live a full life outside of the work. Success is balance, which I'm not always successful at.

AC: What’s the design cliché you’re most tempted to use? SK: I don’t think we need to be too afraid of clichés, so long as you are designing to the story you’re trying to tell. Clichés are shorthand storytelling. Part of my job is to get the easy read — it’s the most effective tool when you don’t have a lot of time on screen.

AC: Do you have any superstitions? SK: I try to force a previous solution in a new situation, and I have to relearn each time that a new problem requires its own unique approach. It's a craving for a formula, but for me the only thing that’s ever worked is to research obsessively.

AC: What’s the one tool you can’t do without? SK: Pinterest is a real lifesaver. It allows for tangential researching; clicking on one thing, then another. The drawing and painting come fast, but the research takes a long time.

AC: What’s the first site you look at when you open your computer in the morning? SK: WhoWhatWear. I find I can't jump straight into working.

AC: What do you do to detox from media and screens? SK: Hiking — I'm Swiss, so it's pretty much required. I live in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, and on the weekends, I'm pretty ready to go off and not look at a screen.

AC: If you could trade jobs with anyone for a day who would it be? SK: I've always wanted to do what I do, so that's a tough question. I wouldn't mind trading with the head of the studio, so I could green light anything and raise my salary a couple million. Or I'd do something completely outside myself — like a spy in the CIA. I've been catching up on Homeland.

AC: What book is on your bedside table? SK: I have a few right now: The Dutch House , The Witch’s Daughter, and Red, White & Royal Blue. For me, reading is an escape, and I like to switch between books based on my mood.

AC: Who are the most interesting designers working today? SK: Those working in VR; they're pioneering the next iteration of viewing. I'm excited to see how it could be applied to our pipeline. Although choosing where you point the camera is such an important part of filmmaking. I just saw 1917 and how the camera was used to create a third character and enhance the narrative and drama — that’s something I’d miss if VR became the norm.

AC: Describe a moment in your childhood when you first identified as a designer. SK: I come from a line of artists, so it was like going into the family business. My great grandfather was an art director; my grandfather was an art director who worked on movie posters — the most famous one he worked on was the Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. My uncle was a writer for television; my dad has done documentary films; my grandmother was an illustrator for magazines.

My grandparents had a studio with an old, mid-century modern cabinet with a thousand drawers full of every art supply you could imagine. We were allowed to open any drawer we could reach and play with all these amazing, professional art supplies. Growing up, you got a crayon instead of a rattle.

AC: If you could have a superpower, what would it be? SK: Definitely teleportation. I'm so sick of my commute. And for dinner — how about Rome?

AC: What’s your most prized possession? SK: I have a lot of art from my grandparents hanging all over the walls of my house. I love being surrounded by it all; it’s like a hug.

AC: Where is your happy place? SK: In my front garden. We live in a 100-year-old Victorian cottage, and we recently redid the garden with plants native to California. It attracts so many butterflies and humming birds. In every place my grandmother has lived, she’s always had an amazing garden. And I knew I'd do the same.

AC: How would your closest friend describe you? SK: Competitive, I hope trustworthy and compassionate. My husband says I have an over-active sense of moral responsibility that keeps me in line; I get very upset if people don't play by the rules.

AC: What’s your best piece of advice for an ArtCenter student who’s interested in following your career path? SK: Many of the people in animation had such a different path than I did. So I would say not to compare yourself to others and don't expect something that worked for someone else to work for you. When I was a student at ArtCenter, I wanted to be a freelance editorial illustrator. But I realized I wanted the lifestyle of going to work in a studio, having a regular paycheck and working collaboratively.

I was attracted to animation, so I pursued becoming a storyboard artist. But once I got the job, I absolutely hated it. So my other piece of advice would be to trust your gut and don't be afraid to change course.

AC: If you could add a course to the ArtCenter curriculum, what would it be? SK: Television animation classes. The majority of jobs in animation are in television, especially with streaming. The industry will likely grow exponentially in the next couple of years, and there just aren't enough artists.

What is your full name?

The lalafel tapped her chin in thought before a frown settled on her face. “Kanna Na Kan, but let’s keep that between you and me, shall we?”

What do your friends call you?

Her frown deepened at that, but she shrugged. “Kan or Potatoe.”

What is your favorite animal?

“Dragons. Without a doubt. They’re just so big and majestic and best of all, they don’t take nonsense from anyone!“

Where were you born?

What had been the makings of a genuinely excited expression on the lalafel’s face quickly darkened to a scowl. “Ul'dah,” she said through gritted teeth.

Do you have children?

With a shrug, she relaxed a little. "Nope.”

Is there a person/people you love?

Kanna blinked in surprise before shifting in her seat a bit. “Hmm… There is this xaela I’m keen on. See her every so often around the realm and we spend time together when we cross paths.” Her blush says there’s more to it than that, but that’s all she’ll say on the matter.

What is your favorite color?

“Favorite color? I don’t have one. I think it’s dumb,“ she says, though the way her clothes are meticulously dyed to match her coat would say otherwise.

What is your full occupation?

“Freelance adventurer. Have been ever since I picked up a pair of knuckles.”

Are you good at physical fighting?

With a smug grin, Kanna unbuttons her coat and flexes her arm; an obviously smug smile breaking across her face. “Very.”

Which form are you best at?

“Greatsword combat. Takes a lot of muscle to heft those things around, but I dabble in a lot of other physical disciplines as well. As an adventurer, you can never be too prepared.”

What about magic?

Shrugging, she buttoned up her coat again. “Eh, I’m alright at it, I suppose. Never was one for the magical arts; felt weird to me.”

Which type are you best at?

“If I had to pick? Um… I’d say Thaumatergy. Though I have heard rumors of this man in red who was wandering around helping people with a sword and some magic. Might chase him down; see what’s up.”

Craftsmanship?

“I’m learning to be a blacksmith. Would like to stop spending so much money getting my gear fixed by other people,” she says with a huff.

Any other skills?

“Surprisingly, I’m a pretty competent Alchemist. Something about brewing potions calms my nerves after a long day’s work.“

Are you an only child?

“As much as I am loathe to admit it, I do, in fact, have a brother.” Her expression darkens to a dour frown as she looks off into the distance, elbow propped up on her knee. “I hope he rots away in the Bloodsands.”

Where do you see yourself in five years?

“In five years? Probably settled down with a husband who isn’t too clingy. Gives me my space, you know?“ she says with a cheeky grin. "Nah, realistically, I’ll probably end up in Othard. I heard some great hero made it safe for us normal folk to go there now. Always wanted to try some xaela cuisine…”

Have you ever almost died?

“Are we talking near fatal wounds or near death experiences? Cause those are two different things in my book.” Sitting back in her chair, she rubbed her chin. “Near fatal wounds, at least five times. Near death experiences? That list is as long as my greatsword. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Do you have a secret, not just a secret, but like a really big secret, hardly anyone knows?

Leaning forward a bit in her seat, she smiled conspiratorially and cupped a hand beside her mouth. “If I told you I knew, I’d have to kill you,” whispered Kanna, a gleam of seriousness in her eye.

Salty or sweet?

“Sweet, without a doubt. Can’t have one without the other, really.”

Do you like yourself?

Kanna was quiet for a moment. Looking down at her flaggon of ale, she sighed before draining the rest of it in few stiff draws; a weary sag dipping her shoulders as she set it down. “I don’t particularly like myself, no. Some days are easier to ignore the niggling doubts gnawing at the back of my mind. Others… It’s hard to get out of bed in the morning and not just cry the day away into my pillow.

"I’ve done things I’m not proud of, lost a lot of friends because of it. Do I regret a lot of my decisions? Honestly, not all that much. If I had to, I’d make the same choices again, in a heartbeat. If saving a life costs my self-esteem, then so be it.”

Do you believe in the Twelve?

“I believe in them, but I am not an active worshipper.”

Are you religious?

“To an extent. I believe that religion is a way for someone to find clarity and peace of mind just as much as it can be used for greed and destruction. You take the good with the bad, as it were.”

Do you carry prejudice with you?

“I hate everyone equally. Doesn’t matter if you’re any of the races that share Eorzea as a home, you have to prove to me that I should spend my time with you. For every beast tribe, there’s a group who actively rail against their kin for because they choose to. Prejudice does nothing but make everyone annoyed.”

What do you consider entertainment?

“Adventuring. On occasion I’ll pull out my harp and noodle on it, but I’m not very good at it yet.”

Favorite drink?

“Tea.”

Do you have any family traditions?

“I actively try to ignore my family whenever I can. So no, I do not have any family traditions I regularly practice.”

Are you a good person?

“As good as a person can be when they go around fighting others as a job.”
