uhm, for your prompts: geraskier, with jaskier hiding geralt (and maybe ciri) from nilfgaard in plain sight, like. without magic, he manages to make the soldiers go away with empty hands? thank you!

sorry this took longer than expected! i haven’t been feeling very well recently so it got left alone for a while. hope you like it though!

“You there!”

“Oh fuck,” Jaskier mutters sharply recognising the no nonsense tone of a solider and feeling the dread settle in his gut like a block of ice. 

Geralt’s fingers twitch at his side, his swords are sadly tucked away under Roach’s blanket just under Ciri’s leg for safekeeping as she sits astride the saddle. 

They’d been reluctantly placed there - at Jaskier’s suggestion - so they could move through town unhindered by locals looking for a Witcher’s aid or at least so the trio could draw a little less attention than they normally would. Something they might have gotten away with if Geralt hadn’t been sour about hiding his swords so much he’d childishly left down his hood. Revealing his rather distinctive and famous white hair for all the land to see.  

And now there are soldiers.

So the idea of going incognito had clearly failed in it’s execution and now Geralt is without his weapons in easy reach as the squelch of many heavy boots marching through the mud approach them from behind. 

Jaskier watches out of the corner of his eye as Geralt’s hand releases the reins for Roach’s bridle and skims along her flank to the hidden pommel slowly. Jaskier shakes his head in warning and thankfully the Witcher listens, stilling his hand. 

The last thing they need is more attention and Geralt beheading the local guardsmen would be like sending up a flare for Nilfgaard. 

Jaskier chews on his lip, racking his brain for a way out of their predicament. He see’s Geralt’s hand move again, not for the swords this time but to rest on Ciri’s shaking knee in comfort. The princess huddles under her cloak, shrinking away from the danger approaching them and Jaskier’s heart aches for her. The lingering trauma of being hunted has left a stain on the once happy princess that Jaskier and Geralt have tried their best to erase. But situations like these always undo that hard work in moments.  

Jaskier sighs at the loss of progress shrinking deeper into the folds of her cloak and decides on a course of action, one that might just avoid darkening that stain on Ciri’s heart. 

“Oi! You deaf?” Another voice yells and Jaskier straightens his spine and prepares to dazzle his audience into submission. 

He spins round dramatically, plastering a wide happy grin across his face. It’s not his most eye-catching outfit but he should be able to draw attention away from the Witcher and his child surprise well enough. Presentation is key for misdirection after all. 

Jaskier glances over the small patrol quickly, filing away the small details that he can use to his advantage. Just like any other ballroom or tavern he’s stepped foot in. Reading the room is how you own it and Jaskier wouldn’t be a famous bard if he couldn’t quickly and effectively discern the lay of the land. A loud tavern full of boisterous laughter needs dance music and bawdy songs, a noble wedding with dignified guests needs jaunty jigs with easy beats to dance to and when enough wine has been drunk, a few romantic epics to get everyone in the mood. The stage is a little different but the details are the same. 

He silently curses as he recognises the dark armour and golden sun stretching across it and prays to whatever deity likes Geralt in one piece in the vain hope that things will go smoothly. But for now, it's up to him and every skill he’s honed at every banquet and party he’s ever been to, to get them through this peacefully. 

“Fine gentlemen, what can I aid such noble soldiers with today?” he greets loudly as he skips forward putting himself between the approaching soldiers and Geralt. A few of the men flinch at his volume. Jaskier notes the overly red cheeks and bloodshot eyes, the slight sway in their stance. Too much patrolling the tavern rather than the streets and very recently too.  

He has to play this right. Be loud and obnoxious and they’ll want to get rid of him quickly to ease their aching heads. Too much though and he runs the risk of raising questions. It’ll be a fine line to tread, a thin tightrope between freedom and a noose but it’s something he’s managed before and for far lesser stakes. 

“Your friend, where does he hail from?” The Captain asks shrewdly, eyeing Geralt’s exposed white hair with narrowed eyes. Jaskier rocks on his heels full of nervous energy. 

“My cousin you mean? Well he and his daughter come from Lettenhove of course! As do I,” Jaskier bows deeply, throwing as much theatricality into his performance as possible, “Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove. A pleasure to meet you, good sir!”

He doesn’t often drag out his nobility but the situation calls for it. Perhaps enough for the men to back off, in fear of upsetting nobility. 

“And your...cousin’s white hair? A familial trait?” The captain asks skeptically. His title isn’t enough to brush away their questions but there is a touch more hesitancy than before so Jaskier counts it in his favour.  He still grimaces a little and racks his brain for a plausible lie to help them escape the situation with as little screaming and entrails as possible. Tiny streams in deep forests are not ideal for removing Nilfgaardian guts from a Witcher’s hair after all and after this fiasco getting Geralt to agree to enter any form of civilisation will be a nightmare. 

So Jaskier does what he does best. 

He tells a story. 

He lets his face drop into a more serious expression and sidles up closer, a little too close for comfort, for a not so much conspiratorial whisper, “No, no, my good sir. Not at all. You see, it's such a terrible thing. Truly terrible. A curse.”

At least two of the men take an involuntary step back as though such a thing could be catching. Good, Jaskier thinks snidely, superstitious morons swallow a lie father easier than a wise man. 

“Twas laid upon him by a spiteful sorceress. He’s quite sensitive over the whole thing as I’m sure you can imagine,” Jaskier placed a hand over his heart as he hammed up the performance a degree or two, “My poor dear sweet cousin spurned the witches advances you see, his heart already belonged to another. Fiona’s mother, she hailed from Nilfgaard, such a sweet woman. Not that it mattered to the spiteful witch! The sorceress was quite enraged by it all and so cursed my poor cousin to bear the likeness of the ugliest creature she knew, a Witcher.”

Jaskier winces internally and sends a silent apology to Geralt and hopes the man won’t take too much offence but there’s no other option for them. 

“How unfortunate,” one of the men comments in a heartfelt manner and Jaskier dabs at his dry eye in agreement.

“Yes it is and such happenstance that we should be looking for a Witcher,” the Captain says, unconvinced. But Jaskier has the rest of his audience on tenterhooks and a crowd can sway a single mind.

He scoff’s loudly and slams his hands onto his hips. 

“Nothing but trouble I say, for we’ve been stopped by every knight and good soldier from here to the Pontar! It’s made our journey to Oxenfurt doubly long and I’m due to begin teaching next week! The delay!” Jaskier wails dramatically and the men collectively wince at his volume and shrillness, “Thankfully with my tenured position the faculty will be most forgiving of my lateness! But truly it has been nothing but trouble!”

“Hmm,” the Captain wavers and Jaskier pushes his advantage, leaning in a touch too far again. 

“I shall tell you good sir the best way to tell a Witcher from my unfortunate cousin is the swords, for Witcher’s carry two on their backs and my dear sweet cousin can only swing a pitchfork!”

“Viscount’s right Captain, no swords,” one of the men speaks up and they all turn to look at Geralt’s back, covered in a muddy cape but bereft of the notable twin swords. 

“He could have thrown them,” the Captain suggests but quietly, not fully believing his own words and Jaskier tries not to let his relief show. 

“Thrown them?! Why my dear Captain, that would be a waste of fine silver and steel! Who in their right mind would throw away a silver sword! Pah! A fool, that’s who!” 

The Captain ruminates for a few moments and then nods, “Right you are, carry on m’lord.”

Jaskier’s knees feel a little weak as the men shuffle round and begin their march back up the street they came. He waves them off jauntily despite the nausea swirling in his gut. 

“Many blessings to you and safe journey my good men!”

As soon as the men are out of sight Jaskier stumbles as the relief falls on him like a ton of bricks. Geralt grips his bicep, pulling him back up as he stares down the street after the patrol. 

“Gone?” Jaskier asks and Geralt nods. 

“Thank Melitele,” Jaskier exhales and drops his head against Geralt’s shoulder heavily. 

“Ugliest creatures?” Geralt asks and Jaskier groans.

“Darling I apologise wholeheartedly for such a lie but how else was I to excuse your appearance?”

Geralt snorts, thankfully with more amusement than anger, “Good thinking.”

“Thank you love but might I suggest putting several fields between us and them before more questions are asked?” Jaskier points out and Geralt wraps an arm around Jaskier’s shoulders, squeezing him close for a moment before letting him stand on his own steadying legs. 

Geralt takes Roach’s reins once more as Jaskier falls into step next to him, he spares a glance over his shoulder at the near empty street behind them and hopes they can put enough road between the patrol and them before nightfall to breathe a little easier. 

“Are you really a viscount Jaskier?” Ciri questions quietly, hunched over under her heavy cape atop Roach. Jaskier startles at the sudden question but settles into a sardonic smile.

“Unfortunately so my darling, though the title does have its uses here and there.”

Ciri thankfully doesn’t press the issue as she flicks her gaze over her shoulder worridily. More concerned with the soldiers than his checkered past. 

“I didn’t think they’d leave so easily,” she mumbles and Jaskier reaches over to pat her leg softly. 

“Fear not my dear, they were easy to fool and won’t be following us anytime soon.”

“How can you be so sure?” Ciri asks, her tone skeptical and a little sharp. A princess on the run yes, but still a princess and one growing from a child into a woman and not shy about demanding she be treated as such. Jaskier chuckles. 

“Simple. I saw all I needed to, to lead them astray. I’ll teach you how to read men like open books soon enough darling,” Jaskier winks and Ciri worried at her bottom lip for a few quiet moments.

“Teach me now?” 

Jaskier shares a glance with Geralt, raising an eyebrow up in question and Geralt simply nods his permission. Well if his Witcher is okay with it then who is he to argue giving the young exiled princess another knife in her growing arsenal. 

“Very well, what did you notice about them?” 

She ponders for a moment, “There weren’t that many?” Ciri offers hesitantly. Jaskier beams encouragingly. 

“Well spotted! A small patrol left in an unremarkable town. Tells us quite a bit. These fools aren’t high on the pecking order. They aren’t given more responsibility or better yet aren’t trusted with more,” Jaskier explains and Ciri leans forward in rapt attention. “What else could you see?” 

“They hesitated,” Geralt says and Jaskier turns his attention on the Witcher’s soft smile. 

“Very good my love,” Jaskier pecks Geralt’s cheek in reward, earning a giggle from Ciri. 

“That matters?” she asks. 

“Indeed, a lack of confidence speaks to their inexperience or perhaps they’ve acted hastily in the past and been reprimanded making them hesitant to act similarly again,” Jaskier explains, falling into his old teaching habits easily. 

“What else did you see,” Ciri questions curiously and Jaskier hums thoughtfully. 

“Dented armour that hasn’t yet been fixed, means coin is tight or flowing elsewhere. Mud caked into clothes and bulging chest plates. These men have become lazy and spend more nights in a tavern than marching around town. Ruddy cheeks and bloodshot eyes tell me they enjoy their drink, a bit too much most likely. Given the hour it was either a heavy night of drinking with a spectacular hangover or they’ve just come from the tavern. Whichever it is, their minds and body long for beds not battle and that my fair girl is where you can take advantage,” Jaskier lists and Ciri looks suitably impressed with his observations. 

“Enough to confuse them?”

“Perhaps enough to lose them in a winding tale with dramatic flair,” Jaskier shrugs, remembering many a glazed drunken gaze and how he used it to his advantage in the past. 

“The loudness helped too,” Geralt offers slyly and Ciri laughs as Jaskier pretends to take offence though he preens at the small but fond smile on his Witcher’s face and the ease settling around Ciri’s shoulders once more. 

“Nothing makes a drunken soldier recoil quicker than a loud bright bard,” Jaskier winks.

I’ve been in a Monster Hunter mood lately, and I know you play it, so I was wondering if you could please assign armor and weapon mains to the HWS characters of your choice! If that’s alright with you! :)

I went a little wild….so uh ehe also I got to Ukraine before I realized I forgot that hunting horns exist

America

Great Sword or Hammer for weapon

Alfred is only picking weapons that look fresh af or funny af

So like the Tuna fish great sword or the Val Hazak hammer

Armor wise he likes bulky, cool looks so something like gravios or diablos is among his top late game picks

He would also like the Great Wroggi set from Rise

England

Arthur 100% mains the bow

And he’s only picking bows that look as natural as possible while still being powerful

He also is rather fond of the Kelbi slingshot even if it doesn’t look like traditional bow

For armor he likes cloaks, so a mixed set with the slagoth cowl or the pukei pukei set are his top choices

France

Francis likes bug glaive and if you know you knowJe suis monte

I don’t think he really has a preference on what he uses as long as it has good dps

Armor doesn’t matter as long as it has good defense and skills without decorations

He plays fashion hunter with layered armor so he changes the looks often

Canada

Heavy bowgun or Hunting Horn

Matthew enjoys the pretty looking ones

So Mizutsune is a top choice for him

Loves mixed sets, he really likes playing fashion hunter without layered armor while also having great skills

Russia

Ivan feels like a Hammer or Switch Axekind of guy

If it’s hammer he’s gonna pick the teddy bear one

For switch axe I picture him as someone who wants the strongest one so looks don’t matter

Armor wise it’s the same deal, best defense is a must, but Ivan might play fashion hunter and try to make his character wear what he does irl

China

Dual blades or light bowgun

Yao likes the pretty and elegant looking weapons

So he’d go for mizutsune weapons or possibly the odogaron ones

Armor he likes to use is odogaron and Val hazak

Italy

Sword and Shield all the way possibly maybe uses a charge blade every once and a while

I can see him using the raithian rapier or the xeno’jiva charge blade

Also I can see Feliciano using the xeno’jiva set for looks, the gratitude set from world for wide range, or the Bishaten set from Rise for the wide range skill

Romano

Charge blade or dual blades

Lovino likes the event weapons a lot because he thinks they’re cute and funny

Definitely also uses the Ruiner Nergigante or Devil jho weapons just for the flex

Picks any armor that’s got good skills & defense and fashion hunters a cool outfit to go with his weapons

Spain

Lance or Sword and Shield

Antonio likes the simplicity of them and how cool they can look I also think he’s complete ass at the game and needs a role that doesn’t have to be directly in front of the monster

Uses everything but I think he likes the more realistic looking weapons

This man is a clown and he’s showing up in the silliest of armor that actually has god tier skills for some reason

Germany

Great Sword or Heavy Bowgun

Ludwig finds it the easiest to use and it’s a really important role to have in a party

Uses whatever, he just wants his armor and weapons to support each other so he picks armor based on weapon and weapon based on what monster he’s up against

He’s all about those elemental advantages and attack boosts

Prussia

Dual blades

Gilbert thinks they rock and he likes how fast they attack

Likes the beer mug ones because it’s funny

Definitely uses the arena earned armors like the brigade set

Austria

Roderich probably uses bow or light bow gun

He’s not much of a ‘be in the monsters face’ kind of guy

Likes regal looking weapons like Velkahna or event weapons

Enjoys the Brigade set and sets that look like normal clothes

Japan

👉👈 long sword or bow

Kiku is a beast with both but more so the bow

You can’t tell me this man isn’t using the funniest looking weapons with the most serious of armors

His sword looks like an umbrella or his bow looks like a stuffed animal but he’s wearing the most samurai looking armor

Latvia

Charge Blade or Sword and Shield

Raivis probably wants an option to protect himself from damage so a shield is a must

Likes the chrome weapons or anything that looks like a normal sword

Armor wise he wants the best defense and skills for whatever he’s using/fighting against and doesn’t care for the looks/fashion aspect

Lithuania

Lance or long sword

Toyls is amazing with it and never hits anyone a miracle really

Has zero preference for weapons as long as they are strong and have good elemental/blight damage

Like the more knight looking armors or the bulky armors like Diablos

Poland

Sword and Shield 100%

It’s easy to use and does decent dps so it’s Feliks’ favorite

Likes the Mizutsune one because it’s pink and pretty but also likes the Nargacuga one because it’s kinda cool

You know he spent like an hour or more making his character look as pretty as possible and uses event layered sets like the spring blossom set

Estonia

Gun Lance or Light Bow Gun

Eduard likes how cool gun Lance is and how easy to use light bow gun is

Picks something he thinks is cool like the nargacuga or black diablos weapons

For armor picture the most generic Monster Hunter armor and you’ve got his look, he spends 0 time on armor choice as long as it’s got good skills, defense, and gem slots

Hungary

Great Sword or Switch Axe

Elizabeta likes the heavy weapons and likes having an important role

Love weapons that do paralysis or poison and have high normal damage so something like Barroth or Chameleous

Uses the bulkiest of female armors or the most feminine ones there is no in between

Czechia

Bow

Hedvika likes the bow because it’s able to stay away from the monster and apply status effects like poison, exhaustion, and paralysis

She has no preference on what bow she uses but definitely has a slight draw towards cute designs

Same for the armor, will wear anything but is draw more towards the cute outfits from events and arenas

Belarus

Dual Blades or Hammer

Natalya enjoys the quick pace of dual blades and the demon mode and also like the feel and damage of the hammer

Likes any weapon that looks especially cool or scary like the Val Hazak or Gore Mangala

Same for armor but her favorite is the Val Hazak

Ukraine

Hunting Horn or Hammer

Yekaterina just seems like the type to use the heavy hitting, blunt, slow weapons

She uses the cute and funny weapons a lot

Enjoys playing fashion hunter and will likely find the time to make an outfit that looks like something she wears irl

Belgium

Light Bow gun or bow

Emma doesn’t want to be on the monster but likes doing high dps

Likes using the rajang weapons because of the high attack

Uses armor/gems it out to have affinity boost and sharpness so her weapons don’t have any negative set backs

Finland

Heavy or Light Bow gun

Tino definitely mains these because yes?

Literally picks any weapon he finds cool, so possibly gore mangala, seregios, or an event weapon

Armor doesn’t matter because he will pick layered armor to look as camo or military as possible

Denmark

Great Sword or Charge Blade

Matthias rocks with a great sword or charge blade because leader roles and big boy damage

Definitely picks silly or scary looking weapons the more ridges and spikes the better

Likes the bulky armors but sometimes plays fashion hunter to look silly if he helps low ranks

Sweden

Gun Lance or Lance

Berwald just seems like a Lance guy, the mechanics are somewhat easy, the damage is good, and the designs aren’t bad either

Prefers realistic looking lances and gun lances

He likes the more regular clothes looking armors from event quests or arena coins

Iceland

Bug glaive

I can imagine Emil likes zipping and zooming through the air plus he gets a little bug friend

Likes gore mangala, Chameleos, and Zinogre weapons

He likes their armors too, but would probably opt for best defense or a mixed set

Norway

Hunting Horn or Bow

Lukas likes the support role that can do big damage and bows are just cool

Chameleos weapons are his favorite because of the magical designs but he also likes the mizutsune weapons

He likes any armor that isn’t too bulky or silly looking and will 100% use layered armor if he has no choice but to wear something like that

Try, Try Again (pt. 6)

Good news! I’m finally done being murdered by schoolwork and can actually post stuff again! I’ve got a few good ideas for other stuff, but in the meanwhile, here’s some more fanfic :p 

Chapter 6 (4537 words)

The first rays of sunlight trickled over the horizon, streaking the sky with the same orange glow as the desert sands below. Disturbed by the light, Rex sat up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Commotion had already begun in the street below, and he could see more than a few early birds up and about their morning errands.

With a deep yawn, Rex stretched, arching his arms above himself and working out the stiffness left in his spine from having slept on the hard floor. As he did, he felt the tell-tale buzz of Emmet’s cell phone vibrating in his pocket. Curious, he pulled the device out, inspecting the bright screen.

Rex grimaced as he thumbed through the messages. If he was the sort of guy that felt regrets, he would definitely regret having told Lucy yesterday that we would meet up with her this morning. But, obviously, he had no such regrets. If any cowardly portion of his mind was shying away from the idea of seeing her and the others again, of being treated like some goody-two-shoes again, then Rex would just have to ignore that part until it shut up and went away.

Unfortunately, it was starting to look like that part of himself wasn’t planning on shutting up anytime soon.

Pulling his knees up to his chest, Rex rested his chin on top of them and tried to reason with himself. Meeting with Lucy was a strategic decision; it was as important to his disguise as the construction worker outfit and the yellow paint on his face. If he truly wanted to keep up his facade, that meant continuing to be Lucy’s Special Best Friend.

Of course, Rex thought, scowling to himself. I might not have to pretend forever.

Once Emmet was done with his training, once he was Rex as well, the odds were high that he’d see Lucy and the others the same way Rex currently did. Therefore, if Rex were to break things off with Lucy, it would likely benefit himself in the long run.

BEEP BEEP BEEP

A tinny, beeping noise emanated from Rex’s pocket, shaking him out of his thoughts. He reached for his cell phone again, only to realize that the device was still resting inertly in his palm. Tucking the phone back into his pocket, he pulled out the sleek black radio that he had taken from the Rexcelsior. The device continued to beep and blink at him, indicating an incoming call.

“Emmet?” Rex asked hesitantly, as he pressed the button on the side of the device.

“Rex!” Emmet’s voice came through the speaker clearly. “You’re there! How are you?”

“Uh,” Rex paused, casting a look down towards the people meandering in the streets below. “I’m super awesome, little buddy. How are you holding up?”

“I’m awesome too! I’ve been doing a lot of push ups, though. Snake says they’re the toughest form of exercise.”

“Yeah,” Rex chuckled. “That sounds like her. Have you all started your mission then?”

“Yep!” Emmet squealed loudly enough to elicit a sharp shriek of feedback from the radio. “The mission is going really well! I was all like, ‘Oh my gosh, why did I think I could do this? We’re all going to die out here!’. But then, we totally didn’t!”

Rex smiled, listening to Emmet regale him with the entire story of his adventure - sound effects included. He tried to pay attention, but couldn’t help but get distracted by the small part of himself was was quietly thrilled at how far Emmet had already come.

He had been hesitant to send Emmet through the glastroid field so early in the training process, especially considering Rex’s personal history with the area, but he had faith in Emmet and his raptors.

Clearly, his faith had paid off.

Clearly, the plan was working.

Rex had let himself get distracted. His goal wasn’t to have a good time in Apocalypseburg. It was to keep an eye on Lucy and make sure that neither she nor anyone else interfered with Emmet’s training. He had let his emotions run wild and, if he continued to do so, then he would never be able to complete his half of the plan. He would fail to protect the one person he cared about.

Emmet was still chattering in his ear, but Rex had long stopped listening. He just had to stay focused on playing his part. If he didn’t - if Lucy and the others undid all of Emmet’s training as soon as he got back, like had happened before when Lucy found them in Undar - then Rex would have to start all over, again.

Yesterday had proven that this was going to be an uphill battle, but Rex had been in situations far, far more hopeless before. He was prepared to tough it out.

“Rex?” Emmet’s inquisitive tone grabbed Rex’s attention.

“Uh,” Rex’s brow furrowed as he tried in vain to recall what Emmet had just been saying. “What is it, buddy?”

“I have to go now. We’re having a mission briefing, and they need their captain.” Emmet couldn’t help but giggle at the thought of that title applying to him.

“Alright kid, keep up the good work.” Rex held the radio in his hand, listening to it spit static for a moment before falling silent as he finally released the side-button. Slipping the device back into his pocket, he pushed himself to his feet and started pacing.

He had to do something to show everyone that he meant business, but what?

His hair was still messy from last night, which was a good start. With a practiced motion, Rex brushed the disheveled mess into his signature hair style.

Next, he clutched at the fabric of his shirt sleeve. Ripping them off would look pretty tough, as they were currently hiding his sick muscles from an unsuspecting world, but would such a drastic change strike the others as particularly un-Emmet-like? Uncertain, Rex settled for sloppily rolling the sleeves halfway up his arms.

Satisfied, he took off down the statue, heading into the city. It had been years since he had walked to Larry’s coffee shop, and yet his feet carried him there as easily as if he’d gone only yesterday.

As he entered, Larry turned and met him with an achingly familiar derisive scowl. As Rex scanned the crowd, the other patrons all shot equally scornful stares in his direction. Unperturbed by their reactions, Rex found himself with a more pressing concern.

Lucy wasn’t here.

With a frown, he pulled out his phone to double-check the messages she had sent. As the screen blinked to life, Rex suddenly realized his mistake.

He was late.

He was really, really late.

He had been so distracted during Emmet’s call earlier, he had completely lost track of time. Lucy must have left already. The meeting with their Master Builder friends had likely already started as well.

Rex hissed a word under his breath - one which cannot in good conscious be included in a PG story - and bolted back out the door.

Approximately ten minutes later, Rex hauled himself up the stairs in front of the former Wayne Manor and, with a grunt of exertion, rapped on the front door with the intricate and incredibly heavy, bat-shaped knocker. A moment past before Batman’s butler swung the door open.

“Master Emmet,” he said with a slight bow. “Please follow me to the drawing room.”

With a nod, Rex stepped through the doorway and proceeded to follow Alfred through the maze-like halls of the cavernous mansion. As they approached a particularly tall, stately looking door, the sounds of muffled voices grew louder and louder.

“Through here sir,” Alfred gestured towards the door before turning neatly on his heel and walking off in the direction they had come from.

Rex watched him leave. Once the butler was out of sight, he turned back to the door, pressing an ear against the cold wood and listening intently to the conversation on the other side.

“I don’t understand why you all voted against the giant steel dome.” Batman’s characteristic deep growl was difficult to make out. “It’s clearly the best and coolest option.”

“Batman,” Lucy responded, her voice strained with exasperation. “I am not going to explain again why blocking out the sun is a bad idea.”

“Sunlight is overrated.”

They’re arguing over how to prevent another alien attack, Rex thought, chuckling to himself. No one in that room had any idea how very relevant those concerns would become before the week was out.

“Maybe we should go over the blockade idea again.” Benny interjected.

“Yar, I be agreeing most with that sentiment.” Metalbeard’s loud voice was unmistakable. “Blockading yon Stairgate is quite clearly a better idea than anything this be-caped fool has suggested.”

Rex grimaced. Space was awful big, but if they started poking around the Stairgate then Emmet and the Rexcelsior could be in trouble. He needed to convince them to drop the idea, but as things currently stood, they would likely ignore whatever suggestions he made. However, if he could just show them how tough he was, then they’d have to take his advice. Determined, he pushed the door open.

“Hey guys, sorry I’m late.” Rex stepped into the room, watching as everyone’s heads swiveled at the the sound of his voice.

“Emmet!” Lucy exclaimed. “I, uh, I thought maybe you just weren’t coming today.”

“Nah,” Rex waved a hand dismissively. “I wouldn’t miss something as important as this.” With a grin and a cocky laugh, he pulled out a chair and flopped into the seat. “After all,” he continued smugly. “You guys clearly need my help.”

The other figures around the table exchanged confused glances.

“Right,” Batman huffed. “We heard you’re tough now, or whatever.” He was seated at the end of the long table, opposite from Rex and directly underneath a large oil painting of himself, whose expression of disbelief perfectly matched his own. At the sound of his voice, Rex bristled involuntarily.

“Well,” Rex forced himself to continue smiling cheerfully. “I’m certainly getting there!”

“Emmet,” Lucy, seated to his left, interrupted. “Are you wearing your hair differently?”

“Oh,” Rex reached up towards his hair absentmindedly. “Yeah, I thought it looked tougher this way.”

“That it does, matey.” Metalbeard piped up. Benny, sitting beside him, nodded in agreement.

“I like it,” Lucy added. “It kind of suits you.”

Rex’s grin softened into something genuine.

“Uhhh…” Batman tilted back in his chair until he was almost parallel with the floor. “Newsflash, but changing your hair doesn’t automatically make you tough, bro.”

“Yeah,” Lucy laughed nervously. “Of- of course it doesn’t… Um, for a totally unrelated reason, I have to leave right now.” Hastily, she stood up, pushing herself away from the table and exiting the room in the direction of the bathroom.

Rex watched her leave, his expression growing taut. “That’s not the only thing that’s changed, you know.”.

“No, yeah, totally,” Batman responded facetiously. “I did notice the whole… sleeve thing you’ve got going on, and that’s just super tough.” He paused briefly. “Also, you can’t tell, but I’m totally rolling my eyes right now.”

Rex felt his fists clench at his sides. Deliberately, he forced himself to take deep breaths.

“Maybe someday,” Batman continued, “you might even be tough enough to patrol the wasteland all on your own. Of course, maybe not, considering that I’m the only one currently tough enough to do that.”

Rex laughed, a burst of manic energy erupting from him. “Well, maybe someday!”

“Well,” Batman scowled, “maybe not.”

“But maybe!”

“But maybe not.”

“I am very uncomfortable with the atmosphere we’ve created in this room.” Benny said, mostly to himself, as no one happened to be listening to him.

Beside him, Metalbeard scoffed. With a cacophony of metallic squeaks and squeals, he maneuvered his prosthetic body such that it leaned over the table conspiratorially.

“I dunno why the two of ye be bothering to argue about toughness,” he mused, “when neither of ye be tough enough to seek out Lord Business’s lost treasure vault.”

Rex gaped at him. “Lost treasure vault?”

“Of course!” Metalbeard clambered onto the table, posing dramatically in the center. “When me crew and I first infiltrated that landlubber’s treacherous office tower, we stumbled across a vast chamber housing his most powerful relics - mysterious and terrible things, the lot ‘em.”

“His relic room?” Rex frowned. “But, we've been there before.”

“We found but one room of many,” Metalbeard insisted. “The powerful relics, the dangerous relics, be kept much, much deeper in yon tower.”

“Rumor has it,” he continued, “that some poor fool tried to find this vault, claiming that the relics belonged in a museum, only to instead find himself flattened by none other than the dreaded Orb of Tee-ti-lus!”

Benny gasped. “That’s horrible!”

“Aye,” Metalbeard assented. “That’s why I'll be sure to avoid his careless mistakes once I get me body working again and can seek out this treasure on me own.”

Batman said something about that, but Rex didn't hear it over the sound of gears turning inside his head. If he could find Lord Business’s vault, break in, and steal a relic, then these idiots would have no choice but acknowledge how tough he truly was.

“I can do it,” he said to no one is particular, before pushing out his chair and briskly walking out of the room.

“Uh,” Metalbeard watched him leave, his mouth agape.

“Well, that's… not good.” Batman stared at the closing door.

“Let's get Lucy?” Benny asked.

Batman nodded. “Let's get Lucy.”

“I can't believe you guys would just let him run off like that!” Lucy, sat in the passenger seat of another of Batman's cars, twisted herself to glare backwards towards the other passengers, who for the most part, had the decently to look properly chastised. As they sped across across the rough terrain, the vehicle jostled violently underneath them, forcing Lucy to hold tight to her armrests in order to maintain her position and fierce scowl.

“Has he not undergone a be-toughening, though?” Metalbeard asked from where he'd been crammed into the backseat. “Is he not tougher now?”

“He's a little tougher, but…” Her scowl softened, revealing a fraction of the worry she really felt. “Come on guys, this is still Emmet we're talking about. Do you really think one day is going to make much of a difference if five years didn't?”

“I hope he's okay.” Benny mumbled, squashed somewhere underneath Metalbeard.

“You guys worry too much,” Batman interjected. “We're all, like, superheros. Obvis, we'll save him.”

He reached over towards the dashboard, cranking up the music in order to drown out the others’ voices. If any of them noticed how his own grip on the steering wheel was deathly tight or how concern was etched into the brow of his cowl, they didn't mention it.

Outside of the car, the wasteland rushed by. Recognizing their need for speed, the group had elected to take the Bat Racer - the fastest custom vehicle in Batman's arsenal. The twin rocket engines on the back were howling furiously, propelling them nearly fast enough to turn the sand to glass underneath them.

In the distance, surrounded by the remnants of other fractured buildings, the imposing silhouette of Octan Tower grew steadily closer. Despite having been ravaged by aliens for years, it was still the tallest building in what remained of Bricksburg. As such, it was not particularly hard to find.

Upon arriving at the base of the tower and clamoring out of the car, Lucy and the others surveyed the area around the building, searching for any signs of Emmet.

“Emmet!” Lucy shouted, cupping her hands around her mouth. “Emmet, are you out here?” She paced nervously in front of the main entrance, worry gnawing at her gut.

“Avast!” Metalbeard exclaimed from around the corner of the building. At the sound of his voice, Lucy ran over to see him gesturing toward the twisted remains of some kind of motorcycle.  

“Is that Emmet’s?” Benny asked, floating closer towards the wreck.

“Yar, most likely,” Metalbeard nodded. “The engine still be hot.”

Lucy felt dizzy. “But if this is here, then where is Emmet?”

“Look,” Batman said, pointing towards the building. “There are tire tracks on the windows.”

“You be thinking he done rode up vertically?” Metalbeard asked, stroking his chin thoughtfully with a metallic claw.

Tracing the tracks upwards, they could see a freshly broken away section of the building - a gaping hole in the glass with fragments of debris still flaking off and falling away.

“Okay,” Lucy said, breaking the tense silence. “Odds are that Emmet went in there. How can we-”

“On it,” Batman interrupted, lunging towards the Racer. With a trained Master Builder hand, he quickly stripped the vehicle apart, reassembling it into a sleek plane. “All aboard,” he barked, leaping into the cockpit. The other three followed him in, and with a tremendous roar the jet took off, streaking up the side of the skyscraper.

Elegantly, Batman piloted the jet through the hole in the side of the building, landing it in a clear enough spot for everyone to disembark.

Climbing out of the plane, they took a moment to look around. The room they were in was an utter disaster zone. Fragments of debris, miscellaneous office supplies, and the occasional robotic limb were littered around the room. A number of desks had been tipped over, and now laid on their side, surrounded by broken chunks of computer monitors and piles of official looking paperwork. In one corner, a beaten-up copier sat by itself, intermittently spitting out blank papers.  

Lucy moved away from the plane, shards of glass and wall crunching under her feet as she maneuvered around the larger pieces of debris. On her left, the room opened up into a narrow hallway. Above the entrance, a laminated sign read “Super-Ultra Top Secret Relics This Way”. Hanging slightly below it, a second sign read “Enter at Your Own Risk”.

Peering into the corridor, Lucy’s view was illuminated by the subtle red glow of laser grids. Beyond them, she could just barely see the rotating head of a sentry turret. Beyond that, there was only darkness and deeply concerning noises.

Unsettled, she turned away from the hallway, shifting her focus towards another worrisome aspect of the room - a giant hole that had been blasted out of the neighboring wall.

“Jeez,” Lucy breathed, stepping closer. “What could have caused that?”

On cue, Rex appeared in the mouth of the hole, holding some kind of large gray tube in his hands.

“Huh,” he looked at the others in surprise before smiling cheerfully. “Uh, hey guys. What’s up?”

“Emmet!” Lucy cried out as she ran up to him. She stopped just short of embracing him to cast a quizzical glance towards the object he held in his arms. “Uh…” She gestured vaguely towards the tube. “What exactly is that?”

“It be a powerful relic,” Metalbeard exclaimed in astonishment, striding towards Rex in order to examine the object more thoroughly.

“Really?” Benny floated closer as well. “But, uh, what actually is it?”

“Unless I be mistaken,” Metalbeard said reverently. “This be the Tape-estry of Ducks!”

Rex frowned. “That’s a stupid name. It doesn’t even have any ducks on it.”

“Me thinks it be a metaphor.” Metalbeard shrugged. “Regardless, legend says that anything ye stick onto its surface will remain stuck for all eternity!”

Lucy gasped. “Emmet! Are you sure you should you be holding that?”

“Relax Lucy,” Rex laughed. “I’ve got it covered.” Holding the tape up, he explained. “Only one side was sticky, so I just rolled it up a little. That way I only have to touch the safe side.”

“Ooh…” Benny nodded appreciably. “That’s super clever, Emmet.”

“Yeah, that’s cool or whatever,” Batman muttered. “Totally what I would have done, you know.”

“Wow Emmet,” Lucy pressed a hand to her temple, shaking her head in amazement. “You actually pulled it off. I’m…” She looked up at him, an apologetic smile playing on her lips. “I’m sorry I doubted you.”

Rex shrugged, struggling to keep his expression cavalier. “It, uh, it wasn't that big of a deal.”

"Not a big deal!?” Metalbeard exclaimed. “Mayhaps you hit your head, matey.” Plucking the relic from Rex’s hands, he carefully turned it over in his hands to admire it. “Any pirate worth their salt knows that whenever ye be laying your hands on some treasure, it be cause for a celebratory shindig!”

“Yeah!” Benny reached over, clapping Rex on the shoulder. “We haven’t had a party in ages, maybe it’ll be fun!”

Rex smiled as his friends started chattering away, eagerly planning a party. The expression sat easily on his face. This kind of reaction was much closer to what he’d been expecting. It almost felt nice, just being with his friends again.

Rex was loath to admit it, but the party turned out pretty cool. The music was intense and loud, the floor was already sticky with spilled drinks, and the whole place stank of sweat and body spray. It wasn't necessarily a fun party, but it was definitely a cool one.

Given the number of people attending, they'd been forced to use the Bat Fortress, as it was the largest available space in Apocalypseburg. However, considering Batman's infatuation with high-end speakers, as well as his recent installation of a snazzy new lighting rig, the fortress was actually a top notch choice for a party venue.

Despite its enormity however, the place still managed to feel claustrophobic. Swarms of people, crushingly close to each other, moved across the dance floor in seemingly random patterns.

In the center of the giant room, raised on a makeshift pedestal, was the relic. The Tape-estry was still rolled up for safety, a wise decision considering that a number of fights had already broken out on the dance floor.

Above all the ruckus, smaller groups sat on the suspended catwalks, talking amongst themselves and generally seeming above it all. Among them sat Lucy, another passive observer of the chaos below.  

Batman, the self-appointed DJ, put on another song. It was something loud and angry sounding, comprised of shouted vocals and industrial noise. It wasn't one that Rex had heard before, but he found himself enjoying it as he started making his way over to where Lucy was perched.

As he pushed through the crowd, people kept slapping him on the back, congratulating him and shouting banal phrases about how they'd always known he had it in him, or whatever. That bitter sense of resentment still simmered in his gut, but Rex couldn't deny that, at the same time, something like pride was slowly joining it. He'd finally gotten everyone to see him, see how tough he could be, see the person he was underneath Emmet's saccharine schtick.

There was one person that needed to see the new Emmet more than anyone else, one person that could undo all his hard work if she didn't. Lucy's opinion of Emmet could make or break Rex's entire plan.

It was for that reason, and that reason only, that Rex clambered up to her place on the catwalk.

"Pretty rad party, right?" He shouted as he approached.

"Yeah," Lucy turned at the sound of his voice. "It's uh, it's great, Emmet. Listen, I, uh..."

Her voice trailed off. Rex sat down beside her, watching her expression shift and grow thoughtful.

"I just..." Lucy scooted closer to him, pulling Rex into her arms. "I'm really glad that you're safe."

Stupefied, Rex wrapped his arms around her in return, pressing his palms against her jacket's velvety back.

"I'm proud of you." Her voice was barely above a whisper, but it didn't need to be any louder. Rex felt the words more than he heard them. He clutched at her like a drowning man, squeezing her tight against himself. The strains of discordant music faded into the background. He couldn't think of anything; for a moment, everything was just soft and warm and perfect.

Lucy patted him on the back, and instinctively he let go. It had been a sort of signal that the two had developed when it became clear that Emmet liked hugs a lot more than Lucy did. It wasn't to say that she didn't enjoy them, just that Emmet tended to hug longer than she was comfortable with.

Rex leaned back, out of her space. She was still smiling up at him, and distantly, Rex could feel a dopey grin mirrored on his own face.

She reached out to take his hand, slipping her fingers in between his own.

"I love you, Emmet."

"I love you t-"

Rex cut himself off with a sharp inhale, the sudden breath causing him to cough profusely.

"I just- I need a drink." Quickly, before she could protest, Rex shoved himself off the platform, dropping into the crowd below.

He didn't run to the drink table, electing instead to turn and race out a side door, out into the chill

evening. The brisk air felt nice, as his skin suddenly seemed entirely too hot and clammy. From behind him, he could hear Lucy's voice asking the other partygoers if they'd seen where he'd gone.

Rex snorted. Of course she was looking for him. Now that he was tough, she and the others actually wanted him around.

This was proof that Rex was doing the right thing. It was proof that Emmet had to change so that his friends wouldn't abandon him.

It was proof that Rex should have just listened when his friends had tried to toughen him up all those years ago.

It was proof that if he had just been tough, then they wouldn't have left him there.

Rex slumped down against the wall and pulled his knees up to his chest. He hadn't listened back then. He'd chosen to cling to childish naivety, chosen to do things the hard way. A cold but familiar voice in the back of his head whispered how, in the end, it had really been his own fault that he'd spent so long in Undar.

This was his own mistake to fix. But, it was at least a mistake that he knew how to fix. In less than a week now, he would finally be successful. When Emmet returned, toughened up and accepted by his friends, the mistakes of the past would disappear.

He would never admit it, but Rex was afraid of not existing. It was an uncomfortable idea to consider. Of course, as he routinely reminded himself, it wasn't like dying. He- Rex would still exist, just with a different backstory, a different set of memories.

In the end, that's what he wanted. After all, the only way for him to move on, to get over Undar, was to make sure that it never happened in the first place. Losing those memories would fix him. It would fix everything. It had to.

Until then, he just had to stick to the plan.

The Best of Luck - USUK FF

This is a fic trade with @x-silkplants-x​. I haven’t written in a while and boy I got a little carried away sorry! (I went over our word count but honestly don’t worry about it! It’s my apology for being late) This was a prompt they had requested so I hope I did it justice >< and I hope you like it!!! 

Summary - On Arthur’s birthday, there is a competition held in which alphas will compete for Arthur’s hand in marriage.  AU - Omegaverse, Wealthy AU  Rating - SFW 

It was that time of year again. Most people looked forward to their birthdays, and Arthur did have to say coming from a wealthy family parties did have their perks. However, his birthday also doubled as another event. It had started from his 18th birthday, from old traditions that had run in the family. On his birthday each year there was to be a competition where alphas from all around would come to compete for his hand in marriage. Since these were modern times though Arthur had been given the right to deny the winner each year since his 18th birthday if he was not satisfied with them. Which he had done. Besides, 18 seemed rather too young to get married. It was only on the condition that he would accept someone by his 25th birthday. It was his 24th birthday now, which meant he had this year or the next to decide, and honestly the thought was terrifying.

He was up late, tossing and turning. It wasn’t like he was… nervous. Probably it was the light from laptop charger, or not being able to get into a comfortable enough position, or the temperature of the room was wrong. Either way, he was unable to fall asleep. Part of him had contemplated that if it came to it, he would run away by his 25th birthday if there was no hope. However, he still was an omega so finding work and support would be more difficult for him than an alpha. And what if he were to get his heat in a place with no security or protection? Arthur had never particularly felt trapped here. He loved his family. But he hated the traditions their family had to uphold, and he hated the unfairness it brought to omegas.

Morning did eventually come. In the grand hall the competitors would gather for pre-event greetings. Arthur was expected to attend, of course. It did give him a sense of their personality before they went into the competition. Most of the time though the same competitors came back each year, persistent alphas who had nothing else to do it seemed. The maids came to help Arthur ready himself, helping him into his attire. He thanked them for their help- It was always such a troublesome task with all the different layers and pieces that went into his outfit. A tailored and fitted suit, with flares to accentuate his frame. He eyed himself in the mirror and ruffled his hair once the maids were gone, not liking when it stuck down on his head too much.

The event was an all-day one, the finale being a grand party held in the ballroom. It was at the end of the party, with a toast to all the competitors, that Arthur would make his decision.

When Arthur got to the grand hall everyone was gathered. His mother greeted him with a kiss to the cheek and a smile, his younger brother tugged at his sleeve and grinned up at him. Arthur gave him a pat to the hair and smiled.

“Martin is here again,” Peter said, looking over in the man’s direction.

Arthur caught a glimpse of the alpha and rolled his eyes. “Back for another round is he?”

“Ava is here as well.” Peter pointed her. She was near a group of Arthur’s housemaids, chatting them up. It wasn’t uncommon for female alphas to perform in these competitions either. After all, the alpha who would wed Arthur would have claim to the Kirkland fortune. That was enough to draw anyone.

“She performed well two years ago, if I recall,” Arthur said, thinking she looked more fit than before, as if she had been prepping for this year’s competition.

Arthur went around and made his introductions, or reintroductions for most, and was about halfway through when he spotted Alfred coming over to him. “Alfred?” Arthur was surprised to see the alpha. He was a bank teller full time and had a brother who was married to a cousin of Arthur’s. Arthur had met him at first at Alfred’s brother’s wedding, and then a few more times after that. He was an awkward alpha, but sweet all the same. He had a confidence in himself but no need to impress anyone. He always had some sort of awful joke he had saved to tell Arthur, and spent a lot of time telling him facts and trivia about ice cream. Arthur didn’t know if it was because the alpha loved ice cream, of if he somehow knew of Arthur’s secret love of the dessert. He was also an American but had moved to London after graduating university, so he still had that American accent Arthur secretly adored.

“H-hey Artie,” Alfred said, looking nervous for once.

“Are you dropping by Alfred? Were you interested in watching the competition?” Alfred had never come before, so Arthur didn’t know why he was suddenly interested now.

“Actually I’m going to compete,” Alfred said, standing up a bit straighter than before.

Arthur laughed. “Is this one of your new jokes you’ve saved for me?”

Alfred’s expression was stuck between a grin (he couldn’t help but smile when Arthur was laughing) and one of embarrassment. “No jokes here today. I’m really going to compete. I-I hope you’ll wish me luck.”

Arthur quieted a bit, seeing the seriousness in Alfred’s expression. He didn’t know how he felt. It was a lie to say he had never considered Alfred in that way. Alfred was handsome and kind and sweet. He could certainly picture him as a good husband. But Alfred had just never seemed interested. Not in money or being part of a wealthy family or even in Arthur at all… It wasn’t determined that Alfred would win today, but if he were to … Would Arthur turn him down?

The nervousness made Arthur’s hands sweat as he was once again reminded of how his time was running out. Alfred cleared his throat a bit, unsure, when Arthur didn’t answer.

“I wish you the best of luck, Alfred,” Arthur said, meaning it.

Alfred beamed. “I’ll do my best.”

Alfred’s best was… clumsy. It looked as if the alpha had not prepared in the slightest. The schedule for the day started with Archery. After that, Hunting, a Luncheon, followed by a Trivia of the Kirkland Household, and finally, the party. Each event would award the competitors with points. It didn’t matter if the competitor scored low in the first event, they were still allowed to continue onto the next one, and complete in all of the events of the day. At the end of the day, the final points for each competitor would be totaled, and the one with the most points would be decreed winner and be eligible to marry Arthur (if Arthur agreed). It was made this way so that those who perhaps were not as skilled in archery could make up points in later events, or vice versa.

Arthur found himself too focused on Alfred to really see how any of the other competitors were doing. He wasn’t even sure who was leading at the moment, but he knew for a fact it certainly wasn’t Alfred. The alpha was struggling to even string a bow. Arthur wouldn’t doubt it was probably the first time he had ever picked one up. He felt pity for Alfred and wished he could go down and give him some pointers. It was no matter though, there were other events Alfred could score points in to make up for it. It was just a slow start, that was all.

But it seemed it was not just a slow start. In the Hunting event, Alfred didn’t know what he was doing either, and had even struggled to get on the horse. At the Luncheon, Arthur observed his manners at the table and found his etiquette to be lacking. However, he was excelling in drawing out forced laughs with his horrid puns. Arthur was at a separate table but could still hear those punch lines and the groans from the other alphas that looked at Alfred like he was just there to make them look better. He didn’t seem to mind, or… he didn’t even seem to notice. He carried on, a big smile on his face. He kept complimenting the food and thanking the butlers and maids that brought each dish out. Arthur smiled to himself, catching his eldest brother looking over at him when he did.

The last event of the day before the party was the Trivia. It was the history of the Kirkland household, the family history, everything important that had been crammed into Arthur as a child about his relatives and all that nonsense. Arthur watched hands raise, answers come. Alfred attempted to answer as many as he could but was often wrong… by a lot. The host of the Trivia event announced the end of the round.

“We will have a set of three bonus questions. These questions are specific to Arthur Kirkland, rather than the Kirkland family. These points will have no negative effect on your score if you are to answer them wrong.”

Each year there was a bonus round, it was promoted as a way to earn bonus points to help you out, but in all the years they’d done it, no one had managed to answer all of them, or even one of them. They were more personal to things about Arthur that his competitors often didn’t take the time to look into. Most of them had never even spoken to Arthur before or outside of this event, and so how could they know anything about him? It wasn’t really fair, but Arthur placed a lot of importance on this part of the day. He didn’t want some stranger marrying him. He wanted someone who knew him or even cared to know anything about him. These competitors might be trained in Hunting, have knowledge of the household, or have table manners, but… They were marrying Arthur, not the hunting grounds or anything like that.

Arthur sighed. All hope of Alfred had gone out the window too. Arthur had thought the Archery was just a blunder, but as the day had drawn on it had become apparent to him that Alfred had not prepared and knew little to nothing about any of the events. Even if he did have his bad jokes and charming smile and cute dimples…

“First question: How does Arthur take his tea?”

One hand shot up. Alfred’s. He’d been trying to answer all of the questions anyway so Arthur thought he was just going to guess at this one too.

“As sweet as it can be,” Alfred said. “Arthur likes as much sugar as the cup will hold. He doesn’t like anyone knowing how much he loves sweets but he just can’t help himself when it comes to tea.”

Arthur’s eyes widened, his posture straightening a bit, his attention more on Alfred now.

“That’s correct. Bonus points to Mr. Jones. Second question. What’s Arthur’s favorite flower?”

Another hand shot up before Alfred’s. It was Martin’s. “Obviously it’s the same as the Kirkland household’s- the Foxglove.”

“That’s in-”

“That’s stupid,” Alfred interrupted. “It’s obviously not the Foxglove. Artie’s favorite flower is a rose. Specifically red roses,” he said confidently. “Arthur always grows them in his private garden and likes to take care of them practically every day.”

“That’s correct. Bonus points to Mr. Jones once again. Final question…” Arthur was as straight up in his seat as he could be, more attentive than he’d ever been before. Alfred had… remembered all those things… about him? They had met before but not that often and Arthur didn’t talk much about himself. Even when he did, he didn’t think anyone listened- especially alphas. He remembered giving Alfred a rose once before, telling him he could use it to brighten up his desk at the bank. Arthur felt his heart race a bit.

“What’s Arthur’s favorite dessert?”

Alfred’s hand went up again with no hesitation. “Strawberry ice cream. Artie likes a lot of different flavors of ice cream, but he likes the sweetness of fresh strawberries and he especially likes them in ice cream. He always craves it around spring and early summer.”

Arthur… had never told anyone that. How could Alfred have known?

“That’s correct,” the host announced. “This event has now concluded. Everyone may now take some time to relax and freshen up before gathering in the ballroom for the party. Thank you.”

The competitors began getting up and stretching and chatting amongst each other, talking about how they think they did, or how many points they thought they had. Arthur couldn’t move, still stuck to the spot, eyes on Alfred. The alpha met his eyes from across the room and he smiled at him. He could see Alfred get up and walk towards him and felt his hand twitch. People moved between them, cutting them off from each other’s view. Arthur got one more glimpse, then stood up and ran from the room.

He ran to his bedroom, shutting the door behind him and walking to the window. There were people out in the lawn who were looking up at his window, pointing towards it and waving when they saw him stand there. Arthur closed the curtains. His heart was racing. Alfred… Alfred had answered every question right. And yet, he had gotten everything else wrong. Oh why had he been so ill-prepared in all the events? Unable to do a single thing. Even with the bonus points he was most certainly in last place. Even if Arthur wanted to chose him, he couldn’t.

Is that what Arthur wanted? Did he want to chose Alfred?

That dolt. That simple stupid American bank teller with his stupid puns and stupid blue eyes. That charming, sweet, wonderful alpha who listened to Arthur when Arthur went on about his boring books or his garden. Arthur felt tears sting in his eyes. He heard a knock on his door.

“Arthur? Dear?” It was his mother’s voice. Arthur wiped the hot tears away.

“Yes mother?”

She entered the dark room, finding Arthur still standing near the window, the curtains drawn closed. She sat on the edge of his bed. She had gone through the same thing as him, competitors asking for her hand in marriage through competition and events. She understood what he was going through. “You don’t have to chose anyone this year, you know…” She murmured, although she too realized he only had one year left to pick.

Arthur sighed and sat down on the edge of the bed next to her.

“That’s not it mother… I have decided…”

His mother perked up a bit, interested. “Really dear? Then what’s the matter?” Arthur looked down at his hands. “The stupid alpha didn’t score enough points,” he muttered.

Realization dawned on his mother’s face as she figured out who Arthur was referring to. She had seen the alpha’s performance throughout the day, had met the lad before, and she had seen her son and him talking a few times. She smiled and ran her fingers through Arthur’s hair.

“You chose him?” she asked. “Are you sure, Arthur?”

Arthur nodded, trying to stop from crying so his eyes wouldn’t be red and puffy during the party. “Even if we gave him a year to prepare for the next competition, there’s no guarantee he would win or even get enough points. And next year is the last… But… he was the only one who knew…” His mother smiled softly and kissed Arthur on the forehead.

“Let me talk with your father,” she said.

Arthur looked up at her. “You mean… you would… let me chose him?” he asked.

“We know this tradition is hard. It’s unfair to chose. We had hoped you would find someone through these parties and events that you would want to chose. And now, it seems you have.”

Arthur felt the tears well up again and leaned over to hug his mother. “Thank you,” he murmured, burying his face into her neck, feeling comforted as if he were a small child again.

Arthur felt as if he were floating through the party, unaware of most things. He felt nervous now even more than before. What if… What if Alfred didn’t accept him? He had run away earlier. What if Alfred had taken that as a bad sign and had left? He didn’t see the alpha at the party now, although there were a lot of people. Hor d'oeuvres were being passed around, family and competitors and many others stood around with wine or champagne in hand, chatting excitedly to find out the results.

A clink to a glass caught everyone’s attention. Arthur had made his way up to the main part of the ballroom, on a raised stage where everyone could see him more clearly. His father and mother were there, smiling proudly at him. His father winked in a comforting way towards Arthur.

It was customary that Arthur was to read the results and make the announcement to everyone. He took a sheet from a maid and stepped up to a microphone. “Thank you everyone for coming and participating today,” he said, hoping his voice didn’t sound as nervous as he felt. His eyes scanned the crowd of faces, trying and failing to find Alfred’s. “Thank you to the competitors for doing their best and working hard for this day,” he added. “As you know, the points from today will be added together, and the one with the most points will be decreed the winner.” Arthur looked at the list. He was always given the score from 3rd to 1st place and started from bottom to top. “I know you all put in your best effort. All of you trained and prepared and studied for the events of today. I saw many of you doing your best and working hard to impress me or show what you can do. I really do appreciate it.”

After searching Arthur’s eyes finally found Alfred. The alpha was near the back, looking at him, that same smile on his face, like he was trying to tell Arthur it was okay. He looked as if he knew he hadn’t won, but he was still happy for Arthur anyway. It made Arthur want to run away all over again. What ifs ran through his mind, making him doubt himself. Arthur took a deep breath.

“In 3rd place, with 380 points, Ms. Ava,” Arthur announced. The audience clapped for Ava, who looked disappointed. Arthur smiled at her. “Thank you… In 2nd place, with 410 points, Mr. Choi.” More applause erupted from everyone. Everyone grew quiet, waiting intensely for the 1st place winner.

“And in 1st place… with 25 points, Mr. Alfred F. Jones.” There were gasps of surprise, even Alfred looked incredibly shocked too. Some of the other competitors began to anger but the maids calmed them down. Alfred, you’re the one I chose… You’re the one I want to marry a-and I hope you want me to,” Arthur said. “If you would please come to the stage if you accept… I-I don’t care if you can’t shoot an arrow, or that your jokes are the worst I’ve ever heard… You knew the most about me and I want to know more about you. Do you- Will you accept?”

There was a pause and then some of the crowd began pushing Alfred towards the stage until he was right at the steps and then next to Arthur. Arthur turned to look at him, swearing he wouldn’t cry again.

Alfred smiled at him. “Thank you for wishing me all that luck earlier,” he said. Arthur laughed and Alfred continued on. “I want to get to know you more too so, I guess what I’m saying is of course I accept.”

Summary: (USUK main +CanFran) Arthur is about to make his debut into English society, but his father fears he has become too rowdy to contain. Desperate to avoid a scandal before the debut of his only Omega son he arranges for him to travel to America. Arthur is to live at a newly wealthy house where removed from society he can’t possibly get into trouble.

Arthur stood in front of an ornate glass waiting, the air exposing against his underthings. His gaze fell to the side where a mannequin with a half-formed outfit was placed. Outside of that everything was orderly. Against the wall there was a large wardrobe and a pile of folded fabrics. A desk was facing him atop it some books, neat stacks of papers and journals. Were they filled with more designs? His hands twitched wanting to flip through their pages to see.

“Sorry to keep you waiting.” Mr. Honda entered, that strange gleam still in his eye. Arthur tried to ignore it as he was made to stand traditionally. It wasn’t difficult, his posture was immaculate. This he knew, it was as easy as breathing. Mr. Honda’s hands moved deftly, sliding on a large piece of fabric. It was silky smooth and cool. The garment cascaded down his form as he was spun. He worked quickly as if he were afraid Arthur would stop him at any point. Arthur had been fitted many times before, but never this efficiently. 

He was now facing away from the glass. Mr. Honda pulled at his waist, but luckily not too tight. Something tied at the top of his back. It felt soft and luxurious. He didn’t speak until he was done.

“Amazing..I thought it would fit, but even I couldn’t predict this. It’s as if I made it for you.” He seemed genuinely impressed. Arthur turned to look at himself, gasping, his hand reaching up to cover his mouth.

A floor length gown. It was very much the style of the plains, domestic. Arthur didn’t wear many gowns outside formal events and even more so ones that were so …puffy. Despite being a day dress it poofed out from right under his mid-chest. It wasn’t so big as a debut gown, but it was enough. The colors soft greens on top and creamy beige down. There were buttons that went all along his spine up to his neck that allowed for the tight fit on top without the constraint of a corset. The collar was see-through and made of a different material that was sure to shine in the light. A small emerald ribbon tied around his neck.

It had some Victorian influences, but there was a prairie overlay that couldn’t be denied. A beautiful and functional dress. The creamy beige of the skirt reminded him of his favorite tea with milk, the design only noticeable at the very bottom where fancy stitching dotted the hem. He smiled at the detail. He couldn’t help spinning to see how it moved. He took a moment to admire the back. The bow that Mr. Honda had tied was a delicate forest green silk. The ties started at each of his shoulder tips tying across his shoulder blades to meet at the center, but it was the buttons that went down his back that drew his eye. He stretched out his arms to see the detailing on the bishop sleeves. They were airy, with only a tease of the outline of his arm. He wondered over the fabric.

“How is it so comfortable?”

“I’m glad to hear it. I went through many prototypes and more than a couple of fabrics, but this one came specially from Asia. I mixed a couple making sure it wouldn’t add too much weight.” Arthur listened completely fascinated by the process.

“Oh Arthur dear! Don’t keep us in suspense we are simply shaking out here! Mr. Jones hardly knows what to do with himself, please do relieve us! Do you need any help I could lend some assistance or-“ Arthur immediately cut him off his cheeks flaming.

“No!! I-er-no thank you. I’ll be out in a moment.”

Arthur’s hands felt clammy as he gripped the soft material, he could feel a small amount of sweat slipping down his back. He simply couldn’t back down now. His heartbeat moving quicker, he took a deep breath stepping out of the room.

Arthur’s eyes immediately found Alfred’s. He had been looking at a hat but dropped it as Arthur stepped out. Alfred’s eyes widened as they glanced over him.

Arthur suddenly felt shyer than before. He worked hard not to care what Alphas thought of him, but Alfred seemed to have slipped through. Now he looked on nervously for his opinion.

The garment was beautiful, a soft look. He found it to be a perfect mix between two worlds that didn’t usually meet, refined nobility with an average omega sensibility, but did he look unappealing in it? Well of course he didn’t typically wear this style and even more so because it was unique to the area. Alfred had said it himself right? It wasn’t his type, it seems at every turn he’d done everything to push him away from anything that belonged in his world. As if Arthur didn’t already know that. His thoughts were spiraling his mood, his eyes dropping to the side, he didn’t want his disappointment to seem so obvious.

Alfred suddenly moved forward. His scent suffused him as he closed the gap. Arthur looked up, his hands beginning to fidget.

“I know it’s not-“ he didn’t want Alfred to tease him so he countered first, but was interrupted anyway.

“You look beautiful.” Alfred’s statement surprised him, his voice carrying a quiet secret. A secret he found himself desperately wanting to uncover.

Alfred swallowed, not knowing what to do with himself. The omega before him was transformed. He wore a fashion that lent itself to these parts, to his home. The alpha in him clawed at him, his instinct wanting to be free. Free to—he pushed it down, his urges lashing out at him.

Arthur had always looked and carried himself every bit the spoiled socialite, but like this that mask slipped away. Arthur looked like an omega he would be allowed to court. An omega for him and his instincts had reacted instantaneously to that. The bars he’d put in place in his mind melting away. A whiff of Arthur’s heavenly scent and he felt something take over in him, the words slipping out before he meant to.

His hand lifted and Arthur’s fell in easily, without a thought, as if they were both in a trance. He spun him effortlessly showing off the full effect. The dress moved fluidly, it wasn’t so big that Arthur had to hold part of it to move. The elegant buttons drew the eye to the shape of his back, the way Arthur moved spoke of years of refinement in the art of perfect form and Alfred felt as if it was too distracting. The bow called to him drawing his gaze, so elegant yet so simple to unravel making it a true tease, just a small tug and that’d be it--

It was a heady daydream that he forcibly reigned in, battling with his instincts to do so. He dropped Arthur’s hand when he was left no other excuse to keep it. He felt his hands balling as he brought himself back. It couldn’t be further from the reality. This was exactly why he hadn’t wanted Arthur to try it on. He had been worried with good reason, but now it was confirmed, and he didn’t like that knowledge of himself.

“I was wrong before. I mean--it’s lovely, it suits you well.” He attempted to pull back, but his hand had already managed to linger, grazing at the fabric of the skirt. He took a step back, hoping some physical distance might help.

Arthur was praised and suddenly the dress felt hot on his skin. He wasn’t sure what he had been expecting much less how to react. Alfred’s unexpected actions had caused his breath to shorten, his heart to beat faster than he wanted. “Oh. Thank you.” He coughed to ease the tension he felt. Alfred had given him a compliment. He could feel how pink his cheeks must be and that only made it worse.

“Oui, but isn’t it much more than that?” Francis was suddenly there taking hold of his arm. “Arthur I must say you look like it was meant for you. Mr. Honda was right it fits you like a dream, it simply must be yours!” Francis pointedly looked at Alfred.

“Yea, of course. We’ll take it.” Alfred’s voice was strangely hoarse. “A gift, something to remember by…the place of course.” They exchanged a glance and something in Alfred’s eyes held a line of heat that made Arthur’s heart quicken again. What a traitorous emotion.

“I can purchase-” Arthur scrambled for his coin purse.

“Do you mean to insult me then?” Alfred’s words were so formal that Arthur stopped. He sounded so a gentleman like that.

“No I just-I can-” he scrambled to cover himself again, now starting to get flustered.

“Arthur allow me.” Alfred’s easy grin returned with only a small edge to it. “Just cause I live out here doesn’t mean I don’t know how to treat an omega proper.” Alfred’s gaze spoke more than his words could, there would be no defying him.

Arthur nodded, his hands clasping over each other, then moving to fiddle with the fabric unable to keep still. “Thank you Alfred. That’s generous of you.” Alfred gave a nod and walked with Mr. Honda to the counter to discuss the payment.

“Well well well!” Francis dramatically fanned himself. “Now we’re getting somewhere!” Arthur turned to face him. Alfred’s presence had washed him away to the background now he came to the forefront.

“I’m afraid I don’t follow.”

“Come now Arthur it’s as obvious as day and night. I can see now how fortunate you are that I have arrived.” Arthur scoffed.

“I’m sure whatever you are imagining, not that I care to know, is distorted.”

“Hmm, if you insist though if anything I feel this place has done you wonders.” Francis had an annoying smile in place.

“How did you come to such a conclusion?”

“You aren’t quite as…prickly here or perhaps that isn’t quite right. It might just be you’ve met your match.” Francis gaze returned to Alfred drawing Arthur’s own to him.

“Mr. Jones is certainly no match for me,” Arthur spoke hotly, crossing his arms.

“Calm even breaths mon cher you’re getting awfully red.” Francis threw in one last cheeky response before Mr. Honda reached them.

“Mr. Kirkland please allow me to make some final fittings on your new gown.” Arthur followed glad to be rid of Francis.

Mr. Honda worked just as before, quietly and efficiently. Arthur had to admit he’d never received a gown this quickly. It usually took some time and corrections. Perhaps this type of garment was more forgiving than others. As he wondered over it, he couldn’t help but end up wondering about the creator himself.

“Have you lived here long?” Arthur’s curiosity got the better of him. It was only polite to make some conversation however. 

“I moved here seven years ago. Originally, I was just passing through, but something about the place called to me. Inspired me I suppose. The people have been kind and I have never needed much. I have been very fortunate.” Mr. Honda gave a gentle smile as he spoke. He did seem truly happy, Arthur felt a pang of envy.

“Does your mate approve of all this?” Mr. Honda chuckled.

“It’s all a bit of a long story I’m afraid I wouldn’t know where to begin with that.”

“You’ll have to tell me sometime then, perhaps over tea?” Mr. Honda stepped in front of him adjusting the waist, he paused to look at him.

“You are peculiar Mr. Kirkland.” Arthur wasn’t sure what he’d said to prompt that response. “I’d be happy to visit you. I do love the Jones Estate, Alfred takes wonderful care of it. It’s no wonder he’s so respected.” Oh. Right. He shouldn’t be extending invitations to a place where he was only a guest, he blushed at his own impudence. Somehow though he doubted Alfred would mind. 

“The grounds are lovely.”

“Yes. It’s that type of scenery that’s inspired this set I’m working on, the feeling of walking through a never-ending field. Domesticity, with the touches of a past life. Forgive me I do get carried away when speaking of my craft.”

“No-I. I do understand.” Arthur could feel that connection to fashion as well. His interest had started from his mother but had grown a life of its own. 

As he gazed at his reflection, he felt it truly was a lovely piece. Something that fit in this place with all its wildness and forestry. That Alfred had been the one to purchase it for him, that he’d thought it suited him after all, made him feel odd. As he was worked on he couldn’t help the feeling of lightness entering his body. It took him a moment to realize what he was feeling was happiness.

 In the end Mr. Honda got the measurements he needed to make the final alterations. The dress would be sent to the estate as early as the end of the day, which was the fastest service Arthur had ever received. He complimented and thanked him for the lovely work, promising to return soon.

They had spent enough time in the store that he’d grown an appetite. Arthur wasn’t sure how they were to dine, but now that he had been eating so well, it wasn’t a need he could ignore as easily. 

“I know of a place a couple blocks away that serves fine food.” Alfred spoke sensing Arthur’s need.

They walked a couple of streets. Arthur admired the craftsmanship that he could see. There were buildings in progress, the smell of fresh wood followed. The buildings looked newer than he was accustomed to and each store front was decorated with charm. A bookstore quickly piqued his interest.

“Oh what about that place down there! That sign is certainly eye-catching! Is it a show, an opera perhaps?” Francis could never keep his thoughts quiet, but Arthur still glanced towards the place he had been indicating. It was on the other side of the street where a building looked to be in the final stages of being built. Down that alley you could see a place nestled into the crook. There was indeed a large sign promising food, a place to lodge, and musical talent. Arthur didn’t have much of an opinion until Alfred stepped forward.

“That’s a saloon. Definitely a place to steer clear from.”

“Mr. Jones surely you know what must come to pass when you deny me.” Alfred chuckled, the sound filling him up from the inside out. Though he teased for once Arthur wasn’t particularly taken with the idea himself. Was such a place clean? Although he was intrigued by the possibility of drink and he couldn’t deny there was some curiosity. He might have read a book or two that dealt with these places. Naturally he’d never been allowed in a bar, this might be his one chance to see what the fuss was all about.

“Nonetheless, it can get dangerous and I hardly think your families would approve.”

“Aww, I’m sure both of you are more than enough to keep us safe. Come Arthur this is exactly why we came! To experience it all before debut!”

He’d been ready to move on, but those final words quieted him. He hadn’t thought about his debut in a while. His mind having been busy with other things. Even if time seemed to stand still in a place like this, that wasn’t really the case, sooner than he realized he was to return to London and then…

In that moment Francis made up his mind, crossing on his own. He stepped into the street careful over his shoes, at the same time a cart was running by. It happened instantly as Matthew flashed by Arthur rushing to half-push-half-scoop Francis across the street away from the near collision.

“Watch where you’re going!” A woman shouted as she continued on. Arthur had a hand over his heart. He noticed that Alfred was by his side, close, his arm laying curled around his waist for just a moment as if Arthur had been the one in danger. He dropped it quickly, but Arthur could still feel the print of it on his person causing an unwelcome sensation in his stomach.

“Are you alright?” He asked, his gaze focused intently. Arthur nodded his heart not slowing even as the danger had passed. “Good. It seems like at least one of y’all has learned not to be so needlessly reckless.” Alfred’s voice was gruff at his ear. Arthur flushed the memories returning once again. He looked towards the ground, but his mind quickly supplied distraction. Would he ever offer the same lesson to Francis? Bile filled his mouth and a feeling welled up at the thought. He didn’t want that. He almost couldn’t stand the thought. The ferocity of the emotion shocked him back into the present. 

Alfred was offering his arm and Arthur unable to say anything took it as they crossed correctly.

“Is that enough excitement for you then?” Arthur instantly scolded as he reached them, his anger flashing into his scent. How could he be so foolish as to run into the street without a single look?

Francis looked pale. His hands were gripping tightly to Matthew’s vest. He turned to Arthur a sheepish smile forming as he did so. “I suppose I did get a little ahead of myself.” Francis looked up at Matthew his eyes sincere. “Forgive me.”

“Please next time allow me to accompany you.” Matthew had a peculiar red tint across his cheeks. Arthur figured it was from the exertion since he had no scent to clarify, betas could be difficult to read.

“I won’t forget.” Francis seemed relieved with the response, his cheeks flushing. After a moment he spoke with the same enthusiasm as before. “I could use some water, after all this trouble we might as well follow through.” Francis looked between them before he settled his gaze on Alfred.

“Mr. Jones please I implore you. I don’t think I can walk much further in these shoes. I’m sure I’m not the only one feeling the strain of the day, Arthur and I are not used to so much exertion. Please take pity and indulge us our adventure. I promise we’ll behave just as you ask.” Arthur felt appalled to be used again, much less in this manner. Would the man ever learn any shame? He didn’t know what Francis thought he was going to accomplish using him of all people to try and gain sympathy. Alfred would rather toss him out than show care--but no that wasn’t true was it? Alfred had shown him much care in the past…

No, Arthur was sure it was only because of his father. Didn’t it always come back to him? Their contract for the summer. After it ended Alfred would never give him another thought.

“…s’pose for a bit, we have come this far..” Alfred was rubbing a hand over his mouth and chin as if he was still not amiable to the idea. Then why was he agreeing? “But I’ll have you stay close at all times.” Alfred tugged on Arthur’s arm as if to emphasize almost causing him to topple over onto him. He truly needed to re-evaluate that strength of his, not that Arthur wanted to be dwelling on that.   

“Of course!” Francis took Matthew’s arm and began gleefully walking towards the saloon. Arthur rolled his eyes but followed suit. He was still tightly bound by Alfred and as they stepped closer to the entrance his grip only tightened. It made him feel safe as they passed through the doors.

The saloon was one large open room. The first thing Arthur felt was the smoke and the scent. It assaulted his senses. A mixture of strong Alpha scents permeated the air. Arthur placed a knuckle to his nose crinkling at the combination. He found himself holding tighter to Alfred not that he appeared to be letting go anytime soon.

The room was open but sectioned off. There was a bar where most of the occupants sat at. Several tables around there for dining Arthur imagined. There appeared to be a stage, but the curtain was drawn. There were only a couple of people dining. Furthest to the right there was a staircase. He wondered what lay above. Alfred and Matthew allowed them the time to sate their curiosity.

“Welcome, welcome oh my don’t y’all make the cutest pairs!” A friendly omega hostess greeted them. She had auburn hair stacked up in curls on her head. There were flowers and jewels interwoven on top. Though he wasn’t accustomed to it, that wasn’t what shocked him.

Her outfit was impossibly tight around her bosom, it continued down to her waist. Her bright pink skirt was hitched up to the side high enough you could see her black heels and the beginning of laced stockings. It looked as if her outfit was meant to reveal more if she moved. She didn’t seem bothered by the staring. It was Francis who spoke first.

“Wow I-I must make a comment. Are those pearls in your hair?”

“Aww isn’t it kind of you to notice! I put em in this week actually, add a little bit of fancy sparkle dontcha think?” Well they did add something he supposed. Just what kind of place had Francis dragged them to?
