1. (i’ve been waiting for the sun to rise where you are, so i can tell you you’re a) superstar

i posted the first chapter on january 12 2019 so it’s almost a whole year old and it’s not done because i love it to death so i just have to drag it on!! it’s a slow-burn and ballet/penpal au between Rosa and Gina that majorly takes place in Paris and i’ve honestly learned so much with superstar! also the overwhelming amount of support that it received makes me bewildered to this day! i am planning on doing a rewrite for it though after it’s finished because i’ve definitely grown as a writer through it

2. (you should see me in a) crown

this one is inspired by my best friend. she makes silly edits for it, and i think it’s one of my better idea -- a royalty/medieval-ish au in which Gina is the crown princess and Rosa is a knight-in-training, which always makes good for Rosa being Gina’s overprotective bodyguard! it’s again, a work in progress -- published in august and still ongoing with only three chapters because i haven’t gotten a lot of time to write, but i feel like it’s gonna be something that i’m going to really end up cherishing.

3. when love is the victim we’ll be the heroes

this is more recently published (december 13). i started writing this fic in the notes app on my phone while bored in school and honestly?? i think it’s a good idea, i’m sorta in love with it just a little bit, and i definitely want to see it evolve. it’s again, dianetti -- superhero au!! they both have superpowers, and are rival superheroes in new york. it’s a rivals to friends to lovers situation. i think it has potential, just again, i need to find time to actually write for it.

4. i’ll carry your pain (along with my own) // my blood was once my own (what have you done)

these two go hand in hand. they’re set in the same universe -- soulmates feel each other’s pain au. the first one is dianetti centered, and the next is peraltiago. i just love how i sat down to write the dianetti one on my day off, i just sat there for hours and the words just flowed and that’s creativity i haven’t felt in a long time. the peraltiago one was a little more tough to write i’ll admit but i’m not disappointed with the outcome of either.

Rules: Answer 11 Questions, Ask Eleven Questions, Tag Eleven People!

1. Have you ever based a story on a dream you’ve had?

Not a story, no, but a few poems! If I have a dream I want to remember, or one with someone who isn’t around anymore, I tend to wake up and immediately write it down. They always seem to come out of my head as poems. 

2. What do you do, when you hit a wall with a story?

I stare at the wall for a good long while, band my head against it a few times, then give up and go do something else. Sometimes I write poetry to get rid of the wall. Other times, I experience/watch/listen to/look at other art to kick-start my idea generator. I went to a slam poetry event last week and holy crap the idea generator was working overtime after and during that event. 

If I’m on a time crunch, I write the next sentence and delete it and rewrite it and delete it and rewrite it until it feels like I can keep going, then I go back and tweak it later. Sometimes the words need to be forced to get along on the page.

3. What kind of characters do you like to write best?

I really like writing quieter characters that have a lot going on under the surface. Most of my favorite characters are afraid to say something, or skirt around a certain topic a lot, or say something else every time they should be saying the right thing. Probably because I love puzzles. And I love subtext. 

The most challenging character for me was a storyteller dude who talked a lot and was very exaggeratey. But it was fun to figure out where his limits were.

4. What do you read, to get inspired?

I am a serial re-reader. I will grab my favorite books and skim through them to remind myself how the characters developed, find the lines that I love, and pick out all the wonderful things the writer did. It helps that I have a crazy good where-in-the-book-was-that memory. 

5. Do you listen to songs/any sounds while writing or do you need utter silence?

I listen to the same song on repeat each time I sit down and write. For my violinist story, it was a cello/violin duet of OneRepublic’s “Secrets.” I listened to it on repeat for like 6 hours. Now I guess it’s kind of my kick-starting writing song. Thanks, Pavlov.

It’s a different song every time I sit down, usually. Sometimes it’s instrumental, more often it’s not. Last time was “The Hymn of Acxiom” by Vienna Tang for 2 hours. My brain has to be able to block it out because it can’t operate without a minor distraction, I guess. I can write in silence, too, if I hit flow state.

6. What is your favorite author?

Hoo boy. Please don’t make me choose...

Rick Riordan, Lauria Halse Anderson, Neil Gaiman, Mackenzie Lee, Madeline Miller, Tim O’Brien, Rabih Alameddine, Margueritte Bennett (I have a signed Bombshells #1! Eee!), Bill Konigsberg, and Kieron Gillen, to name a few.

7. There’s a zombie apocalypse and the CDC issues that the only way to kill the zombies, is to hit them with your least favorite book. What book, do you use to kill some zombies?

Beginners by Rebecca Wolff. Had to read it for a class. The prof said we had to read bad books and good books to learn from both and I cannot believe he considered this a good book. Everyone else in class had some serious issues with it. It could kill so many zombies, though. 

8. What do you think is going to be the next big “monster trend” in modern day literature? We’ve had Vampires, werewolves and zombies, what do you think is next?

Hmmm. Well. To get nerdy for a minute, monster trends tend to reflect societal trends. Vampires (Victorian Era) were about repressed sexuality and Gothicness. Zombies are/can be a metaphor for environmental collapse/global warming/nature coming back to kill us all because we messed up. Twilight vamps were about feminine wish fulfillment and how everyone hates teenage girls (so can we please give them some respect for the love of God).

If I were to throw a guess out there for the next monster... I mean, I want more monsters from different cultures’ myths and folklore. We had a big trend in dystopian recently, since we found out we were the monsters. Next might be... I dunno, fish people? Dark Tulpa-type monsters might be cool, too. I mean, we’ve got the Babadook. 

9. Which wip of yours is the favorite child? If you only have one WIP, which character is the favorite child?

H2H, no doubt. It’s the one that’s always in the forefront of my brain. Within that story, I think Gemma is the favorite child. I just learned that she can get a little intimidating when something is keeping her from helping people and that’s not what I was expecting from her. She keeps growing and changing as I keep writing and I love it. 

Fred is pretty great, too, though. My first note for him was “He totally gardens in khakis and knee pads.” 

10. What kind of things do you like to use to get in the writing mood?

Reading up to the point where I left off writing and getting inspired by other stories and music. When I was an actor, I used to listen to playlists I made to get in character before going out on stage, and the habit carried over to my writing. 

11. Outline or no outline?

90% of the time, no outline. Recently, outline. Ugh. I don’t like outlining because it makes my brain think I’ve already written the thing and then it doesn’t actually want to write the thing.

-dream jobs: oh man uhh. i used to think i wanted to be like a genetics/evolutionary biology professor and do research on evolution or cancer or hiv/aids and teach at like ucsf or something. or like work for nasa as an astrobiologist, or maybe work as a vet for a zoo. but now i don’t think i wanna do that anymore? to be quite honest if i could be 100% guaranteed whatever job i wanted i think i’d want to be a showrunner for an animated show on cartoon network or adult swim, like not something just with storyboards or animation, but like actually involved in the writing of the show. i’d love to write for a tv show on cartoon network or something like the office or brooklyn 99 or even a story-based video game, or maybe like do something where i get to just joke around and be funny all the time like what the mcelroys or game grumps do but. i have No Idea how to go about doing that and honestly i think jobs like that just happen to people randomly so it’s not really like, a Secure Job Option To Pursue. but i really hope somehow i end up doing something like that. i just wanna do something where i can create something meaningful that i’m proud of and see people connecting with it and feeling happy and inspired and less alone because of it, and maybe liking it so much a fandom or something grows around it. i’d be so fucking happy if that happened. 

-dream trip: i really want to go to new york with my jewish grandparents and see where they grew up and all the places they lived so i can finally experience all the places i’ve heard so many stories about? same thing with my abuelitos like i wanna go to mexicali with them or mérida in the yucatán and just see where they came from and where all their stories happened and meet all the relatives that they left behind when they came to the united states. also i think going to like, denmark or england or germany would be really cool? my friend studied abroad in england this summer and her snapchat story was full of dogs and random cows and those are some good things. i would very much like to softly caress a gentle english cow they have beautiful eyes

1. Which book has been on your shelves the longest? I still have a few books that were gifts for baby me, but I think Matilda was the first one I collected for myself.

2. What is your current read, your last read and the book you’ll read next?
 I plan to start reading “The Complete Guide to Self-publishing Comics” by Comfort Love and Adam Withers.  My last book was “Like Falling Stars” by Avalon Roselin, and the one after my current will prob be ”ALiCE” by Avalon Roselin in preparation for Grave Harvest. 3. Which book does everyone like and you hated? I could think of a few I read in school... First one that comes to mind is the Scott Pilgram series?

4. Which book do you keep telling yourself you’ll read, but you probably won’t? 
Uhhh... I mean, I never actually finished the last Harry Potter book?  I was so bored by the end I quit reading it and never returned. x’D

5. Which book are you saving for “retirement?”
 Not sure.

6. Last page: read it first or wait till the end? Always wait. 7. Acknowledgements: waste of ink and paper or interesting aside?
 I like reading them, actually. 8. Which book character would you switch places with?
 All the stories I read are horrifying, I wouldn’t want to be in any of the characters’ shoes. 9. Do you have a book that reminds you of something specific in your life (a person, a place, a time)?
 If I listed them all, we’d be here all day. 10. Name a book you acquired in some interesting way. Okay so I enjoy telling this story: I was the reason “ALiCE” ever made it to print.  It started when Avalon and I were sitting in my car.  I had been reading some of her writing online and she asked me what my favourite character from her writings was.  I told her it was Michael and I think the only reason she didn’t hit me was because I was driving.  It was around the same time that I told her if she published “ALiCE”, I would illustrate it.  I feel like I had some leverage because she likes my art a lot, and in the end I got what I wanted. c: 11. Have you ever given away a book for a special reason to a special person?
 We don’t give books away in this house. 12. Which book has been with you to the most places?
 Probably any of my “Inuyasha” manga. 13. Any “required reading” you hated in high school that wasn’t so bad ten years later? I don’t re-read that shit.  “The Great Gatsby” can lick my ass. 14. What is the strangest item you’ve ever found in a book? I found a library card in a book once... 15. Used or brand new?
 Mostly used, sometimes new. 16. Stephen King: Literary genius or opiate of the masses? He’s aight.  I like Firestarter. 17. Have you ever seen a movie you liked better than the book? Like the HP films got better as the books got worse?  Also, if anime counts, I like the anime of “Ouran High School Host Club” better than the manga. 18. Conversely, which book should NEVER have been introduced to celluloid?
 There are some anime adaptations that should burn.  “Chobits” specifically. 19. Have you ever read a book that’s made you hungry, cookbooks being excluded from this question? 
Harry Potter food, man. 20. Who is the person whose book advice you’ll always take? No one’s, really.  I am so picky when it comes to media that it’s hard to suggest things to me.

10 Random-ish facts about me

Oh, yay, I love doing these! Tagged by @darugha to write 10 facts about myself. 

1. I have autism. SHOCK! HORROR! Actually, it’s not that surprising if you’ve known me long enough. But I am very close to neurotypical so when people find out for the first time that I do indeed have autism they don’t believe it. 

2. I’ve never seen Pulp Fiction. Everyone has seen this film except me. I get funny looks from my friends as though watching Pulp Fiction is the one thing in life you must do in order to qualify as a hipster. TBH, I don’t really care. I may watch it sometime in the future. But I’m in no rush to see it. 

3. I used to be in a school choir. When I was small, I apparently had such a lovely singing voice that my mother said I should join the school choir. I wasn’t in it very long, though. Probably because at the tender age of 7, I wasn’t ready to perform in front of a live audience, which the school choir did every week. 

4. I am working on a novel. If you’ve met me in real life, you’ll know that I am working on a novel. I mention it often enough. I’ve been working on it for nearly four years now and I feel like I’m almost there with it. Once I’ve finished this draft, I will start properly sending out copies to literary agents. Failing that, there’s always self-publishing!

5. I can speak Japanese. Sort of. While I was doing my MA in creative writing, I embarked on a basic Japanese language course. It lasted twelve weeks and I can’t say I gleaned very much out of it but it was kind of fun to do regardless. 

6. I have an MA in Creative Writing. Talk about a useless arts degree, right??? Well, no, it hasn’t been entirely useless. It helped me get the job I’ve got now. Want to move onto better things, though.

7. I’ve been with my boyfriend for 6 years. Yep. And still going strong, I’d say. 

8. I swallowed a coin once. When I was three, my Nan (who’s a bit silly, if I’m honest), used to give me coins. Like, real actual coins. So I did what every three-year-old did -- I put one in my mouth and swallowed it (that sounds so dirty out of context but it’s what happened!). It got lodged in my throat and I was throwing up everywhere so I had to go to the hospital and nearly died. Yeah. I’m not sure if my dad has ever forgiven my Nan for that. 

9. I’ve published some short stories and a couple of poems. They were only in student publications (and like hell if I got paid for it!) but I have been published in various small magazines and anthologies throughout the past few years. Doing an MA in writing does that for you, though I hope to be published one day for real. 

10. My favourite writer is David Mitchell. Author not the comedian. His books are legendary. In case you don’t know, he wrote Cloud Atlas, but my favourites among his works have to be Ghostwritten and number9dream.

why did you choose your url ?

my main is @/childofthecycle and the acronym for that is cotc !! but @/cotc was taken so i doubled it haha

why did you start your blog in the first place ?

i just wanted a blog where i could rb and post about my interests aside from the aesthetic i post about on my main, and those interests quickly became more kpop related !! i also wanted to post edits, and eventually started writing fics a few months later.

why did you choose your icon ?

i change my icon somewhat frequently just based on other icons i’ve seen and liked. recently i’ve been loving the look of simple line art as an icon, and i love how cute yet edgy this image is !! just like me hehe

why did you choose your header ?

i’ve been playing around with photoshop a lot lately and i wanted to make a header with a cool shape !!! the coloring and design kinda came naturally from there. and i thought adding the lovestay and loverboy doodles would be a cool personal touch :)

it depends, i guess. if the subject of the post pertains to a lesser known topic or has any valuable resources, i’ll be more likely to reblog it. but i HATE posts that guilt trip people into sharing them without providing resources on how to help the situation.

also, i think it’s safe for people to assume my blog is safe for/open to people from all walks of life, so i don’t really feel the need to reblog any “rb if your blog is safe for [blank]” posts. y’all know me. i’ll be ur bestie no matter who u are. <3

short answer: yes !!

1. Does music inspire you to write?

Not unless I’m doing songfics as a warm-up or something. I usually use it as a tone/mood guard rail as I’m writing. That’s why I make story/character playlists! They keep me on track, especially if I’m revisiting a scene I haven’t thought about in a while.

2. Which WIP did you learn the most from writing?

My Romanian story, for sure. I had the help of my thesis director/mentor with that one, thank God. I learned how to establish a scene quickly, how to do flashbacks like other people do them, how to incorporate languages without messing up the pace or losing the reader, and how to write historical things. 

I learned a whole lot about what not to do from my Story That Shall Not Be Named Because It Bad, too. 

3. Is there something your OC should be afraid of that they aren’t?

I think Gemma should be more afraid of being found out than she is. I mean, she’s technically a witch (an unregistered magic practitioner, because of her potion-making which is classified as pseudo-magic) who has no social security number, lives in secret, and does illegal internet things. She could get into some serious trouble. There are even more nasty consequences that I can’t reveal because spoilers, but let’s just say she has no idea they could happen and they ain’t pretty.

4. Is there something they don’t need to fear, yet do? Irrational phobias?

Yep! It’s one of the cores of her character. She’s afraid of being left alone, abandoned, kept out of her found family. Being used for her skills and ignored as a person. I don’t think they’re irrational, but she has never listened when people tell her not to be afraid of those things.

5. Do you prefer reading physical books or e-books?

Physical books, by far. E-books for my college student wallet, though. They saved me when I didn’t have time to order books, too. I have a crazy good “where in the physical book did this event happen” memory. Like, I can name an event and flip to the page very quickly based on how far into the book it was. Very handy for citations. And I love the feel/smell of a book in my hands and all the contorting I do when I read one (seriously, I almost always end up upside down or completely sideways in a chair).

6. What’s some details of your world building that you like?

All the little things! Academic internet piracy network to help witches, how magic interacts with daily life, tweaking folklore to fit story lore, 

7. Have you ever created a magic system? What was it like?

Oh, boy! Yes, I have made several. My favorite might be the one from my TV show where the only magic is healing/life manipulation magic. The way it works is that when healers do their thing, they physically take on their patient’s injuries. If you have a broken arm, now the healer has a broken arm. Works with diseases, too. Here’s the snippet from the Show Deck about it:

In the darkest corners and dingiest alleys, magic pulses through the veins of the downtrodden. Seen as evil and taboo, magic operates by the law of an eye for an eye, a life for a life. Sacrifice fuels these dark arts, and those who manipulate them are covered in scars and never-healed wounds. Healers operate in the shadows and lead short lives, field medics are scarce, and the king has two sorcerers by his side at all times, bound by a blood contract to give their lives in his name.

We’ve got astronomy/astrology, carving/linguistics/physical art/symbology, politics/making powerful friends/handshakes/marketing/political science, geology/archaeology/product design. Also some secret types that involve psychology, sound design/sound engineering, and water treatment/environmental science/architecture.

There are also pseudo-magical professions that blend with tech and science, like potion making!

8. What was your first favorite book?

I’m 90% sure it was the American Revolution Magic Tree House book. Or one of those books. They were the best.

9. What time of day are you most motivated to write?

7pm-4am. Yep, I hate it. I’m trying to push it closer to 2pm-9pm but it’s tough.

10. If you could step into the shoes of one of your characters for a day, which one would you pick?

If we’re talkin’ H2H characters, I honestly would not have a preference. Everyone in that story is pretty dang chill. If I had to choose, I’d go with Jill or Treena. They’re both artists and artisans who have cool houses and great friends.

11. What are some little quirks you like to give characters? Ex: a lot of mine have freckles Just Because.

There are Many. A lot of my characters have curly hair because I have curly hair. Many of them are left handed (especially my sword-wielding ones). A bunch of them have scars. A lot of them know curse words in other languages.

1. What do you want to see more of in the book world? (more rep, more of a specific genre, etc)

I have a rant about this, but to sum up: fewer straight white men dominating publishing, more open acceptance for new voices and ideas, less focus on easy-sell formulaic stories, less prejudice against certain genres... the list goes on. Also, in the publishing world, fewer submission fees and more journals that pay.

2. What time of day are you most productive writing-wise?

Answered above! Evenings and nights. It’s starting to shift to late afternon to late evening though, which is a nice change.

3. Do you have a designated space where you write?

Nope! I usually use my laptop wherever I can sit down or stand without my back screaming at me. I hate writing on my phone, though. Too small, too many typos.

4. What kind of platforms/programs/tools do you use to write? (Word, notebooks, Google Docs, Scrivener, etc)

Scrivener! It’s so helpful for my disorganized ass. I only use Word for academic papers now. When I’m having trouble getting ideas out of my brain, I write by hand in a hard back spiral notebook. I can’t stand writing in journals without spirals. 

5. Hardcover or paperback?

I like both. When I read, I sit weird and hardcovers prevent the pages from bending, but paperbacks are good for traveling with. And they’re cheaper. But hardcovers are so pretty... 

6. What’s your favorite story trope? Are you using it in your wip(s)?

There are a lot of tropes and I can never pick just one. I like friends to lovers, almost everything in LoTR and all those high fantasy things, complicated political/family dynamics, etc. I don’t typically like to write the same things I like to read, though. I have trouble naming them sometimes, but I know I use a bunch of them. 

7. If you had to send your favorite OC on a blind date with a character from someone else’s book, who would that character be and why?

Oh boy. I’m watching the Lord of the Rings extended editions right now, but I’ll try not to be biased.

If I were trying to be funny, I’d set Fred up with Aziraphale from Good Omens. I feel like they could have some good weird conversations.

Gemma and Nicholas Flamel from The Alchemist would be fun, too. Or Oz and Boromir. 

8. Do you write scenes in order or out of order?

I like writing them in order, but sometimes that doesn’t work out like I want it to. Now it really depends on the story. I wrote the first part of AOPC out of order and it messed with my head a little, so I’m trying not to do it for my longer projects. My short stories are always written one and done, in chronological order, usually. Especially the ones under 2k words. WYSiOaD was written in order, then switched around to fix the flow and plot.

9. If your favorite OC was a superhero, what would their superpower be? (assuming, of course, they aren’t a superhero to begin with!)

I do have superhero/villain characters! Here’s some others, though:

Gemma - Empathy / Transferable Rapid Healing and/or Regeneration

Oz - Truesight / Invulnerability

Mel - Animal Friendship or Shapeshifting / Conditional Foresight

Fred - Domino’s luck power but backwards and framed like happy accidents that always seem to work in his favor. So... Mr. Magoo.

Teva - Earth sculpting or something like earthbending

10. Describe your ideal writing session.

I sit and I write a whole short story in one hit. Then I wait and edit another day. 

I am a simple bean.

11. What do you think would turn your protagonist into a villain?

Seeing what was lost and having it torn away forever before she gets to claim it again.
