Let’s talk about writers and fanfiction

Over the past weeks I saw a lot of writers in my dash receiving tons of nasty anons criticizing their style of writing, writers I really  appreciate even if they don’t know me. Then came the plagiarism thing, so i decided to write a few things about the matter (forget my English, is not my first language 🙃)

I have to be honest, a year and a half ago, I thought of fanfiction as a silly thing until I decided to give it a try and read and definitely changed my mind. I have no idea how to write fiction is, the only approach I have about the subject is the journalistic writing I have to do for school and even if it’s different, I get that the feeling of posting something you’ve done can be scary, nerve-racking, gives you a lot of anxiety. Will people like it? Is it a silly thing to post? What if I said something wrong, if I’m misunderstood?

What I intend to say with this, is that it takes a lot of courage to publish something so intimate, something to which you dedicated a lot of time, effort and what you did with love, and also, for free. And I say intimate because I firmly believe that when writing fiction, a part of each writer appears there, a piece of how they are, what they think, their believes. As for example in the last chapter of BTY. I don’t know @balfeheughlywed , we never talked but I read a post recently about how that chapter meant for her to be a love letter to motherhood and it perfectly reflects her intention while mixing it with the story (beautiful chapter btw, I end up crying when Jamie started to talk to their bairn)

When it comes to feelings, many times the way to channel them is through writing. Other times it is through music, painting, dancing, etc. there are a lot of ways to express them, but since we are talking about written stories, let's keep it that way. I think what Lauren did was something beautiful, I’m not a mother but I thought of my mom and what she has been through, and it must have been a terrible yet beautiful experience. Other author I can think of right now is @whiskynottea with Death dreams. Her writing there is so beautiful yet so painful because she talks about things that happens in the real life. I sort of know how it is to live with someone suffering depression and let me tell you, it breaks your heart. Her portrayal of Claire as the partner of the one suffering, and Jamie as the depressed one seems so real, like you can feel what they feel in every chapter, and is a clever decision to add topics maybe not everyone is brave enough to talk about, be it depression, abortion, PTSD, miscarriages, some terminal disease…

Also, I want to comment on the subject of plagiarism. Since the beginning of last year I read OL fanfiction, and I can *shamefully* say that I read a lot, much more than all the books I have on my shelf that I didn’t read yet. And in many cases things are repeated, such as the meeting of the main characters, how they fall in love, the use of quotes from the original books, even the personalities of the characters involved. That doesn’t mean to plagiarize anyone’s work, in my opinion, it’s because within this community, many people think about the characters in a way (i.e. Frank being an abusive sexist who cheats on his partner and doesn’t care), many topics are repeated (Jamie being librarian, Claire being a doctor), what really changes is how each one writes a story based on it, and among everything I read, it's always different, because as everyone is different, so is their writing.

But also, we are in 2019 guys, I doubt there’s something that hasn’t been invented yet, everything gets recycled, so what’s the point in blaming people for writing similar things? Also, what a waste of time to be searching some specific quote of a fic and compare it with another one, i’m tired with only think about it.

For me, writing it’s a very difficult thing to achieve since I suck at words and have no idea how to express my feelings/what I want to say properly (you are seeing that now, haha). But these people out there who week after week transmit magic with each chapter, who write them in such a poetic way, research enough to give a quality content, deserve nothing but praise. If you don’t like what they write, there is only one thing to do, don’t read it. And if you have nothing good to say, it is better to say nothing. There is no reason to be filling their inbox with horrible comments, insults, pointing their mistakes if there’s no a constructive reason behind. Im always saying this but we don´t know what’s in each other lives, so maybe by leaving those things, you’re ruining their day.

There is a huge variety of styles to choose from, so it's a matter of looking for what you like and keep going. There are stories that are simpler to read, others more complicated, with metaphors, more description, maybe more elaborated (I don’t say that the simple ones are bad, but they are easier to read, at least for me, and I like it), some have shorter chapters, others longer. There are about J/C, about secondary characters, one shoots, multichapters, fluffy, angsty, canon divergence, AU... And luckily, the number of people who dare to write their own stories grows day by day, and the ones we already know improves every week, with every new story so, why don’t we go for kindness, good comments, and constructive criticism instead of sending hateful inboxes?

For writers: I can’t express how much happiness you give me every day, how I improved my English since I started reading. Reading every story makes me understand how you write the characters we love (and hate), how you understand them, how can you put them in different scenarios, different eras, in which they are presidents, florists, doctors, professors, businessmen, swimmers, make them go through difficult times, beautiful ones, and that so and all you make them shine. The possibilities you have are immense and I can’t wait to read everything they have to offer, because I’m sure is going to be a masterpiece. I know is easier said than done but it’s better to focus in the ones who really cares for the time you put into this, who waits impatiently for a sneak peak, an entire chapter, background information about your story, pics, whatever. Haters gonna hate and I personally believe it had nothing to do with you, they are just mean people, maybe bored ones who thinks is funny to send those kind of messages and don’t really care if they are hurting you in the process. Keep doing your thing, you are free to do it and there are a lot of people willing to read whatever you do.

Thank you for being brave enough to share a piece of you, of your creativity and sorry for being lazy and sometimes forget to leave a comment, or read the chapters 657946 years later, believe me when I say I do love everything you write and I end up laughing, crying, jumping in my bed when some characters kiss for the first time after a long slow burn, and sometimes completely shooked at the end of every chapter and wanting for more ❤️❤️❤️

Good Coffee. Awkward Conversation.

Who: Noah Puckerman and Abel Hayward When: August 27th noonish Where: Lima Bean, Lima Ohio What: Puck runs into Abel in Lima and they finally meet.

To say Puck was tired would be an understand. He already had issues sleeping due to some shit he saw overseas, but with Saph in town, it was fair to say sleep was the last thing on his mind. The recruitment office was usually slow around lunch time, so Puck decided to dip out and run to the Lima Bean for needed caffeine. His uniform brought about the usual stares, but he was used to it by now. Puck ordered a large coffee, black and stepped to the side to wait for it to be made. He accidentally bumped into the man next to him and muttered an apology before looking up. The man looked familiar, but he couldn’t place an exact name to the face. “Do I know you?”

Abel was thankful for his mom when she told him that she would watch Issy while he slept. Though, he couldnt sleep any longer and didnt want to grab something to drink at home. So he got dressed, grabbed his skateboard and headed to the Lima Bean. He was scrolling through the tag photos he was in when he felt someone bumped into him. He looked up and noticed that the other guy looked familiar. “Maybe? Lima is a small town and everyone knows everyone, right? Or has that changed in the past two weeks.” He pocketed his phone and took off his sunglasses to get better look at the guy.

Puck furrowed his brow slightly as he thought of all of the people he knew from Lima. Once the other man took off his sunglasses, it all clicked in Puck’s head. “You’re….Dani’s roommate, right? The ‘hottest male dork’ she knows,” he said with air quotes. Chuckling, he offered Abel his hand. “Sup, man? I’m Puck.”

“Arent you the guy who called me Captain Ab-merica last week?” Abel asked when he looked at the guy better. “Yeah, Im Dani’s roommate and that is me.” He chuckled as he shook his hand. “Not much, you? And Im Abel, its nice to finally meet you.”

He laughed at the accusation and shrugged a shoulder. “Yep. I mean to be fair, you had just posted a shirtless photo.” Hearing his name being called out, he turned around to grab the coffee and thanked the barista before facing Abel once more. “On a quick lunch break. Needed a pick me up…someone kept me up all night,” he joked before taking a sip of the hot coffee. “You wanna grab a table? I got like 20 minutes before I have to head back to the office.”

Abel raised an eyebrow when he heard Puck and pulled out money for a tip before he took a drink of his coffee. He did a spit take when he heard Puck and coughed. “Saph’s here?” He asked as he used the sleeve of his hoodie to wipe his mouth.  “Yeah, that sounds good to me. I got an hour before I gotta surprise my daughter but let’s grab a table.”

Puck raised an eyebrow at the spit take. “You ok, dude? Yea Saph’s here. Wait…you know Saph?” he asked as he made his way to an empty table and took a seat. “Yea Saphira surprised me at work last week. It’s been amazing even though Lima is boring as hell and there’s nothing to do here,” he added with a chuckle. “You have a daughter? How old is she?”

Abel nodded as he cleared his throat. “Im okay, I didnt know that Saph is here and that, I do. We’re acquaintances, Saph asked me to write that article on Quinn a few weeks back.” He took the seat across from him and placed his drink on the table. “Yeah, but some of the people aren’t bad.” He casually said, took a sip of his coffee and placed it back on the able. “Yeah, um. Well, she’s still currently my goddaughter but Im in the middle of the adoption process and she’s seven, actually. She’s been visiting my parents for a month, that way she’s not in the midst of everything that has been going down in LA and in New York but Dani and I got a house this past weekend and we want to surprise her with it.” He paused for a bit. “I saw that you had a thing at the school, how did that go?”

Leaning back in his seat, he nodded slowly. “Ah I gotcha. Saph is awesome. Best partner in crime I could as for. You’re a journalist? That’s cool. I can’t spell worth shit to do that.” He sipped his coffee slowly as he listened to the other man speak. “Seven? That’s a good age. My daughter is eight. She’s a firecracker. I heard yall were moving. Are yall all unpacked yet? Moving is a bitch,” he commented as he played with the coffee cup in his hand. “It went well. Got a decent amount of interest. Just wanted to let them know there are options out there if college isn’t their thing, you know?”

Abel nodded when he heard the other guy. “Yeah, Saph’s one of a kind for sure. Im a journalist, Im also freelance artist at Cy’s comics in New York, model and Im also a voice actor who’s going to be taking acting lessons when I get back. That way I can get more acting roles since I love it. Thats why they have editors.” He said with a smile and nodded once more. “Yeah, she’s seven and it is, but Im worried since she’s already sassy enough, that she will be more sassier and a firecracker. For the most part, but Dani’s unpacking the rest and getting Issy’s room together. It is, yeah but hopefully we’re done moving for a while.” He listened to him, took a sip of his coffee and placed it back onto the table. “Of course, yeah and I wish I had that kind of information when we were back in high school, but I guess I had my calling.”

Puck couldn’t help but smile. “Definitely one of a kind. I’m a lucky dude,” he responded with a nod. “Shit, dude. That’s awesome. Sounds like you’re living the dream…and it explains the shirtless pic,” he joked. “She’ll probably get a little more sassy. I feel like the sassiness doesn’t stop until like teenage years are done.” He shrugged and took a sip of his coffee before setting it down. “Everyone has their place in life I guess. I didn’t think I’d be doing this when I was in high school. But I ended up loving it. Life is weird like that.”

“Yeah you are.” Abel agreed with a smile and slowly nodded with a chuckle. “And the bunch of magazines of me on the cover in the store.” He let out a sigh as he listened to the other guy, knowing that he’s right. “Yeah and even with that, it won’t stop. Her mother was sassy. Not only that, everyone around her is sassy.” He pointed out and knew what he meant. “Yeah, that’s for sure. One thing is happening and then the next, your life is changed.”

“Sassiness is genetic. You’re screwed man,” he joked with a chuckle. “Agreed. You never know what the hell life is gonna throw at you until you’ve already been hit in the face by it.” Puck took a long sip of his coffee before setting the cup down once more. “So how long have you known Saph? Got any secret insider information for me?”

“I’ve been screwed ever since she learned how to talk.” Abel chuckled as he shook his head at the memories. “Exactly and you’re never prepared for that either.” He leaned in his chair and hummed as he thought. “I’ve known Saph ever since April/May? During that time, things were fuzzy as fuck around those two months. Just, don’t get on Saph’s bad side or anything like that.”

Chuckling, Puck finished off his coffee and pushed the cup to the side. “Kids, man. They’re a handful.” He drummed his fingers on the table top and nodded his head. “Ah so you two have known each other for a little while, nice. It’s nice to meet people who know Saph who aren’t Quinn.” Puck couldn’t help but laugh at the bit of advice Abel gave him. “Yeaaaa I don’t wanna even know what Saph’s bad side is like. I’m gonna treat Saphira as good as I can.”

Abel nodded in agreement. “They are, but Im grateful for her.” He chuckled a bit before he shook his head when he heard Quinn’s name. “Yeah, we have and thank god, no.” He ran a hand over his face and looked at him once he leaned back once more. “You and I both.” He sat up a bit straighter before he gotten comfortable in chair and smirked a bit. “Speaking of that, we both know that Saph can handle anything. However, I started to care about Saph a bit more ever since the car accident.” He picked up his cup, twirled it around his in hand and looked at it for a bit. “Though, if I hear one thing about you upsetting Saph, in any form that’s not from happiness or hurt Saph. I know a bunch of guys who owe me a favor and I know that they’re not afraid to send you swimming with the fishes and I also know that they would make everything like an accidental kinda thing.” He looked back at Puck and continued to move the cup. “These guys, aren’t small, believe me. I wish I can say that they’re small and wouldn’t hurt a fly. However, I’ve known them for at least four years and I can at least name about, fifty guys who disappeared without a trace and the cops never solved their case. A bunch of cold cases.” He stopped the cup and placed the cup onto the table. “So, if you hurt Saph, I’ll make sure to be the journalist on that case and I will make sure Saph will be protected. Capisci?”  

He smirked softly as Abel spoke before reverting to the blank face he was trained to put on in the face of threats. Puck crossed his arms over his broad chest and listened carefully to what the other man was saying. “Heard and understood,” he replied. “But you should know, I care deeply about Saph. And I will never, ever, do anything to hurt Saph. Saph is the best thing that has happened to me in a very, very long time. I may be stupid…but I’m not dumb enough to fuck up what we have.” He leaned forward and offered Abel his hand. “You’re a good man, dude.”

Abel had to keep himself from chuckling after that, he couldnt believe that he went full Italian and he wasnt even Italian. “Good, if you do, I’ll let Saph deal with you then I’ll involve the guys.” He replied before he shook the other’s hand. “Eh, I try to be a good man, but thank you and you’re a good man too.”

“That’s fair,” he replied as he took his hand back. Checking his watch, he cursed softly to himself. “I gotta head back to the office. I’ll hit you up the next time I’m in New York, man” he commented as he stood up from the table. “See you around, Abel.”

“You better, or I would be hurt.” Abel replied as he watched the guy stood up and finished his drink. “See ya man.” He stood up as well and threw his drink away before he checked his own watch, knew that he needed to head back to surprise Issy.

Sorry for the long post aaaa1: Let’s start with a tricky one; what is the real reason you are confused right now? im curious. why do you resent that one art professor and not the other two?

Sorry this took awhile mate! Gonna put the read more after the first paragraph and also add pics because I think it’s funny. Well more or so I’m coming to terms with things(finally) and just finding it funny at this point.

I’ll start with the other two professors first as I’ve come to realize with professor 2 really had more of a mindset of “x” has been done before so why are you doing it? Or something like that and then kept trying to push me to add animation to my work when repeatedly I said I wasn’t interested in doing that. Because A) I’ve animated before and it’s tedious and just not in my interests. B) I just wanted to work environmental/location concept art but that got derailed hard in that class.

They were very nice but that one class could have gone better. And then they knew how much work animation would be since I had them for another class that semester and had us do various animated things without much time to really learn the programs. Seriously don’t try and force someone to change their work. Introduce them into new things but don’t try to force and belittle something else they are doing. Just it doesn’t engaged you(by sight like seriously?) then it’s not for you(no as in a brushing off way). I don’t need to change it for it to be engaging the way you think it should be engaging. Like some of my classmates works may have not been up my alley but the discussions we had were engaging.

Professor 1 never really forced their influences in class nor critiques really and any misunderstandings we(using the term because it wasn’t just me) had were during critiques was just the whole Fine Artist brain vs Visual/Commercial Artist brain (because that’s what illustration/comicbooks/game design falls under in a way) not working but after that we were cool and they’re still one of my favorite professors. They got me into the idea of drawing from sounds (scrapping/scratches/etc.) though that one class was rough as I had constant migraines from a molar coming in. Really enjoyed a lot of the experimental sessions we had. I need to see what they’re up too.

Also wasn’t too keen on professor 1’s portfolio class as I felt like that missed the point of what a portfolio class is supposed to be but then again they were weird with their classes which made them interesting as a professor. One more thing, didn’t like their mindset of “well you’ll get sick and tired of what you’re doing in a few years and wish you were doing something else” towards visual/commercial art. This was said to a classmate of mine that was interested in stuff like me(they’re still buddy buddy).

Took awhile to process that statement. But they’re still one of my favorite professors. When I get home I should take some pics of things I did in their class.

Also looking up the whole “all art is political” thing again because I did realize I’m a bit rusty on the subject, I’m seeing how broad they’ve made that statement and why it’s become such a heated subject. I can see all art has become politicized in some fashion. Main issue I’ve seen people more or so locked into the mindset sociopolitical statements for art and less the whole it being a sum of your being/what you want to express/etc. and for some it’s “I like to make art because it’s fun.” We’ve gotta be mindful of looking at the past with a modern lens. So I guess I can add onto my explanation several posts again and I’m more or less in agreement with the semicolon. I see art more as a form of expression which can be anything. By default it is not political. Art can be anything, which doesn’t always mean pretty or look the same like everything around it. There were genres of art that were more that were experimental in both the process and the meaning i.e. challenging 1)how art was made 2)how we perceive it and 3) how we interact with it. Probably some of my favorite movements art the Conceptual and Photorealism. I have a few others but I have to make sure I’m not mixing them up with something else. Okay let me stop there and get back on track.

So…Professor 3 yeah..this is gonna be a long one so buckle in! It was a series of things besides them reading in and pushing context that isn’t there for a lot of people. First meeting them in a different class when they were a guest professor for critique wasn’t a pleasant observation. We understand you have somewhere to be at a certain time, don’t repeat that, and then don’t derail a student presenting their stuff which then delays the rest of the class. So kinda of a disrespectful start which didn’t change much.

Then my portfolio class with them… yeesh. Pretty much a repeat of the other portfolio class 100% which it really shouldn’t have been(it was a different professor for the other one) and then making it mandatory for us to produce new art for that class alone which was not that realistic for anyone cause if you’re taking portfolio 1 or 2 you are manning like 3 or 4 studio class and not scouting your non-school life. I still think people just showed what they were doing in other classes because nobody had time for that or needed extra stress.

I think they also had a serious case of selective hearing or ignoring when it came to certain subjects when explaining ones body of work which just made the ‘critiques’ awkward and drag on more than they should have. It’s like there was an adversion to try and learn just a smidge of different artist interests and what they like making things or why they are doing this certain thing. I’m paraphrasing this quote they said that I remember but it rubbed me and several people the wrong way. “You shouldn’t create it if it already exists and you should only create things it if they may make sort of statement,change, impact, etc.” . Like:

Also feel like they had a bit of “white savior complex” because man some of their suggestions of what I should do were really racist. And the insensitive insisting that the context of my comic was some escapism story that was a critique on the social political climate of America and it wasn’t. Like ignore that it’s really is/more of a coming of age story for the main female alien character and her learning about other worlds/cultures/etc and them growing as a person and seeing the faults in the empire she was raised in. And yeah they hard ignored if not derailed more of me elaborating on the story and characters. Glad the other ‘guest list professors picked up on the detailing and tried to fix things but at that point it was pointless but did appreciated their effort.

Just lots of sighing and facepalming and a few of my close classmates were a bit bug eyed from some things professor 3 said. I know they meant well in the end but they missed the mark by several miles.

Otherwise had no issues with my other professors throughout the years especially for the directed study courses. Funnily enough my handbuilding/ceramics professor gave me better advice than most of the professors in my selected degree on finding jobs, work studies, and some other things. Not counting my graphic design teachers because they were super YES. Well this has been cathartic and I hope this satisfies your curiosity anon.

This feeling around camp has been so strange and I'm not sure if it's because I won or just because every tribal isn't gonna be the same. I had more people talking to me for the first tribal like right after results were posted and serious game talk with the whole tribe. Yesterday night only Sam, Lily, Christine and Dan messaged me but we didn't even talk game. (Well I guess that's about the same amount of people, but like the conversations were less in depth like they were the first time.) I just feel aimless in this game and I don't really have a good strategy. I'm not even sure I want to make it far because it always gets ugly once you get far enough. Lily just solidified our alliance of 4 (Dan, me, Sam, and her) and I think it'll be easy enough to ride it out with them for a while. Lily and Dan seem to closest and I know in the past Sam will have multiple close allies and not necessarily stay loyal to one overall. Kelsey freaking randomly disappeared again! If anything I'd trust him a bunch because he's new and I can influence him more easily probably into giving me information and voting with me, but I can't do that with this weird continued activity/inactivity. Might he actually be a catfish? We will never know. Also!! Silly Gabby and Jonny having too much fun in One World last night. I knew Jonny was in Rakiura but that's basically it. I'm not close to Veronica (as in I have not talked to her since Day 1) so I have low chances of finding out from her, but I talked to Billy last night and asked him to ask Chrissa about it. My allies are Rhea, Kait, and Darian (even if he did vote for me). I like Emma but I know she's probably upset about the first vote. Sam and Steven, you can go. I can try and bring in Andie and Amanda close to me, but it will be fishy to do it now. That's on my tribe. I like Jenn too, and Sam, and Shea <3. You never know in this game, I might go out, but I think my position in the tribe may increase? I can see it. I love Rhea so much. She's the purest cinnamon roll I've ever met. <3 100%

OKAY! So now that I actually have time, I've been talking to people on my tribe a lot more. I've been talking to Billy, Chrissa, Jonny and Gabby and they all are reasonable people. Whilst talking with them we talked about how Hunter is pretty inactive in the game and that we could look at him as a potential first boot from the tribe. The whole twist of us being in One World and only have individual immunity has kind of flipped the entire game on it's head. Usually, weaker members of the tribe are targeted because they're a liability but weaker players don't really matter as much this season because tribal immunity exists. Which means that people that are stronger in challenges may start to be targeted to give those weaker people a better chance at winning individual. Honestly, good job Ricky and Monty because I've never seen this before and it's kind of fun. 

Well I didn't win the last challenge... My document glitched and I lost most of my pictures, but the fact that I would have won still keeps me going!

Veronica should be going tonight, but I question if it should be shea. But I think Veronica is a good vote right now and shea would be better for the following vote. My, my, my. What a LOVELY week this has been. So currently, our tribe is back at it again with dat council swag. I didn't do well in immunity, like I knew I would. However, if anyone can win, I'm very glad Miss Moana SNATCHED the title. Last tribal council, I flopped. I was inactive and that's unacceptable so this week I'm really pushing myself to be a deciding factor force like Ariana Grande deciding to snatch weaves when she breathes. With my reputation currently, I don't think people really assume that I even have it in me to be strategic. Little do THEY know...they are wrong. AHAHAHAHAHAHHAA. Now, Seamus has informed me that the vote is Shea. However, Seamus is a GOOBER. Shea and I have really become close and the fact that Seamus literally pms me to vote Shea BEFORE asking me how I am shows his inner Kesha: his True Colours. I don't really like the fact that Seamus is just treating me like a free vote because I know what his intention. I already can smell that he wants to drag me as a cute, innocent vote until he makes the merge with his best friends and takes me out. THAT'S going to be a no zone. Although that is the persona I'm going for, I feel like Seamus already has suuuuch a big plan for getting to the end and...I'm not a part of that. And if you're going to count me out, henny, count on getting to stepping. Or something exotic like that, tee hee~! I feel really nervous for Shea. I told her that Seamus was wanting to eliminate her and she immediately almost spoiled everything. She's an emotional player and that's the kind of I want to keep around. Those are the ones who never see through my fakeness and the kind that are targeted before good ol' sweetheart me. The only other option is Veronica so for this week, I'm going to try and flip a few people to do so. The last vote was so unified that it's quite scary actually...if things keep going the way they are, I have no doubt that eventually it'll be my log chopped by the axe. My advantage for this week's vote is that no one really has a reason NOT to trust me. With Veronica, they KNOW she's a scrappy player. And I believe I can use that to my advantage. Y'all don't know me, y'all don't know what I've been through! And NO ONE is going to believe that cutesy little Arianator weeabo is pulling strings. I learned from my past Tumblr competitions that playing aggressively gets out fast. I know now playing passively gets you treated like a child. Here...everything has to be subtle. Small little touches, here and there. And if you do enough of that, maybe the trickle of water can erode the rock. That's what I'm hoping to do here. If somehow, we can do the impossible, not only will I establish myself as a real C.O.M.P.E.T.I.T.O.R in this tribe, but I'll have pulled off a blindside that's really shocking and game changing. ALRIGHT...So I'm really hoping Shea goes this tribal cause like....He can't be chill for one second in this game.  Literally the plan was to get Veronica out but once he hears his name he quits? C'mon now.. Don't even get me started on Kelsey telling him his name was thrown out cause like!?!? We're doing that so no one gets in trouble here why are you doing this!?!?
