I have a running theory of why the writing in s1 and s2 of Nancy Drew is arguably stronger and that it has little to do with the number of episodes and instead the approach to storytelling but alas that's all I can say for now

Ok ok ok– I just started watching Chaos Theory, not even done with episode 1, but I'm too emotional about my baby boy Darius. He's so grown!! Like I saw the trailer and teaser but seeing him for a solid 10 minutes, how tall he is, how much deeper his voice is, how he talks and interacts with others, he's not baby anymore!! He's also so sad :( Oh and his phone call with Brandon. It's too much. I can't take it ( I love the angst)

And the animation is SOOO good. Ugh I love it so much. Okay that's all I had to say. For now...

Honestly, I think some of the fixation is that some people don't want Sam to be an excellent actor and resent that he clearly is (or, allowing for subjectivity lol, that he is clearly viewed that way by viewers and critics), they don't want the attention/praise he gets to feel earned, for whatever fandom competition reasons. He's pretty hard to actually criticize, acting-wise (not that someone being generally viewed as great means they can't have people who aren't feeling it for whatever reason--look at Meryl Streep and Pauline Kael), so I think that's the one thing they can try to latch onto, I guess? To be fair, I don't think that's all of it, I think some people don't feel like he sounds like a contemporary French person and still love his performance. They just don't generally fixate on that. It's interesting reading those other asks talking about his accent being great and specific, because I've seen SO many French people talk about him having a great accent or at minimum a good one (the only review of the show I ever saw from a French publication singled him out), and then some French people who don't think the accent is convincing but love his acting regardless, so maybe it is down to regional differences and what he was trying to put into the voice, since we know it was meant to be unusual. I felt like Sam, Assad, and Jacob all created voices that felt fully embodied and true to their characters, including accents, so I loved that, whether or not they were all perfectly accurate (I don't speak French and I'm not from New Orleans so I'm just going by what other people say lol). Delainey too, even though she had so little time.

The whiplash I got reading your asks, haha. It's really interesting! It seems to be such a contentious topic, but it's fascinating ro read such different opinions on it. I'm not familiar enough with French accents / regional French accents to really comment on it beyond saying that I love Sam's Lestat voice, but I appreciate the conversation and everyone taking their time to share their thoughts and experiences!

i just keep thinking about how maximum ride is actually already primed to do that whole "sequel series about the protagonist's kid where we find out the protagonist was a horrible parent for no reason" because you know what? max did have reasons to be a horrible parent! she would've been a bad parent because she wasn't raised right! she wasn't even raised!! she got 2 years with jeb acting like a normal dad (during which he didn't even tell her that he was her dad) and otherwise, it seems like her only frame of reference was those few months with anne and then whatever she saw on tv. james patterson didn't have to have max abandon hawk for her to be a bad mom, but he opted for that instead of admitting that, yeah, max is unsuited for motherhood and, in fact, wouldn't have WANTED to be a mom.
