#I'm Livejournal/Myspace era

Me all "hmm, that last reblog is a bit... much" and then "no wait, my dad doesn't follow my Tumblr so I don't have to worry about putting this kind of stuff on his dash when he's at work" and then "wait, my tumblr is pinned on my twitter" and then "WHAT IF MY DAD HAS A TUMBLR!"
If he does, I'm sure he knows better than to check it at work or in front of other weirdo normal people.

Tumblr media
Tumblr glitched while I was trying to answer this, but thankfully I took a screenshot of everything before refreshing because I legit cannot find that draft or question anywhere now, sorry. So here we go again...
I'll link to the post here. (btw any annoyance that might seep into my tone in my recent answers is NOT directed at the actual people asking... y'all are lovely). So that post is done in a very similar tone to the Ryden primers that the pre-split fandom posted, but I'm getting the sense that this is very very different... like that person seems to actually believe the content that they're posting is straight up facts (and even if they don't, the fact that you're referring to it as "infamous" probably implies that other people are at least treating it as real facts, so I'm still going to address it like the tone is serious). Here's an explanation of how the majority of the fandom used to view Ryden.
A lot of their pictures no longer show up, so I'm going to leave a wayback screen recording here for reference:
I'll just comment as I go through it if I have something to add:
I suppose that the tone of someone's comments is open to interpretation, so idc as much about whether those are misread or not.
That supposed AIM convo was shared as a myspace bulletin by Brent's brother Blake during the summer 2006 season when he was trying to stir up shit and was busy posting other inaccurate info too. I'm just saying to take it with a grain of salt.
Ryan’s lj post on 9/27/05 was about the release of AFYCSO that day. He talked a lot in interviews that season about how it was weird for him to see so many fans singing his lyrics back to him.
uhh most of the pictures that this person lists "from this era" of 2004/2005 are actually from 2006. so they definitely know what they're talking about here lol.
they list one of Ryan's livejournal posts and then say "I'm not sure of the exact date, but I know it was some time in 06." It was from June 24, 2006.
lol Audrey.
re: the Myrtle Beach theory
why is the part where Ryan called Brendon a golden god in late 2006 any different than when Brendon said this about Spencer that same season?
re: the 2006 mic-sharing & stage gay
fans would positively scream when Ryan & Brendon approached each other, especially in the last half of 2006. this moment in Munich in October 2006 seemed no different... the guys absolutely knew what they were doing.
the VMA performance just seemed like Ryan was still using Brendon as a safe space to look at so he wouldn't stare at his feet or guitar, but that is still very much something you could turn into a Ryden thing so carry on haha.
about the Rolling Stone interview
I'm laughing at the "squint a little harder" comment about finding Ryden content in 2008. That is so accurate.
re: Dylan's myspace (yes, Keltie ran a myspace for Hobo that anyone could grab pics from).
Ryan absolutely sounds like he's saying dude... also that would be normal.
the picture of the bracelet is normal
I'm just going to link to this post since it addresses many similar inaccurate points about early 2009.
I was about to side eye them so hard for posting the Lana Jade letter as real, but at least they added that she made multiple posts explaining that it wasn't her. And yes, obviously Brendon's best friend was Shane (not Ryan).
omg Ryan's tattoos are not about Brendon. Those are Tom Waits lyrics. Ryan was good friends with Thomas Dutton. About a year before getting the tattoos, Ryan was hanging out with him on tour in the UK and later told Kerrang that “a friend of mine in Forgive Durden turned me on to Tom Waits when we were in the UK… I’ve been listening to him ever since. His voice is so rough and dark. I’d never really heard anything like that.”
the sharing beds idea was misunderstood in the Billboard interview... all 4 guys slept on bunkbeds in the same room when they were recording AFYCSO. That's what Brendon's referring to.
re: the Bishop Gorman tshirt… Ryan was hardly that size in high school. But Brent went to Bishop Gorman too (and so did Paulina, who was also friends with Brendon). Brendon did borrow some of Brent’s stuff in 2004/2005 (like money for food while they were first touring). Just saying… it's def interesting, but it’s not an automatic Ryden connection.
I didn't read Spencer's tone in that out.com interview the same way... there's some relevant bits in this post.
about the red shirt
here's my general tag for Ryden stuff

if you had to base a new riverdale season off three movies, which would you choose and why? they could be tonal choices or you can pluck entire elements of the movies and work them in.
ok i broke the rules bc i didn't stick to movies, i went novels and pop culture with it too. and i also kind of embroidered a few references together around each main riff in a way that i think COULD be riverdalian, but these are my 3 selections:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
jt leroy (2018). trashy iffy-hot-take kristen stewart/laura dern movie about a very 2000s literary scandal/internet drama run Too Far into irl drama that i think riverdale would know better what to do with. two ideas (this is a jughead plot btw):
put jughead in the dissociated trauma-projecting controlling persona-having laura albert/jt leroy role and rope veronica and reggie and their monetary-business motivations into the scam angle. monica posh savannah knoop stuff and rattling veronica and jughead around in a jar together intensely in a campy way
or step lightly outside the bounds of this script into the real livejournal and myspace based drama of it all and jughead's sometimes-characterization as a guy who needs help unpacking metaphor even though he's swimming in it. make him into one of the many emo band boys (ryan ross?? ryan ross????) who related so so so so sosososo much to the writing of jeremiah terminator and then had a whole crisis when j.t. was unmasked as a middle-aged woman with a metaphorical literary persona.
permissible bonus web-weaves: james frey a million little pieces and oprah, augusten burroughs and running with scissors. we're doing the 2000s obsession with author authenticity is-this-really-autobiographical-if-it's-not-literally-true-or-are-you-shaming-your-family-for-NOTHING questions and scandals. but we're especially doing the emo community freaking the fuck out about blorbo from their novels doing a catfish online to extend the persona just that much further.
Tumblr media
the avril lavigne replacement conspiracy theory (linking the wiki even though what i'm REALLY thinking of here is this moving pandemic essay alexander chee my beloved posted that i can't locate now, riffing on themes of feeling like a ghost inhabiting your own life after a major trauma). they can work in some other famous body double / replacement and assassination conspiracies (paul is dead, jfk) too but avril is the main reference and this is a betty plot.
pull in some actual alexander chee images and motifs too maybe, his novels about csa grooming trauma and having complicated feelings about your intimate abusers via like grandiose opera/paris siege metaphors (the queen of the night) and fox demons (edinburgh) betty would eat, i fear, even if they're a step off her normal serial killer media mix. dark betty has the range <3
Tumblr media
stephen king's the long walk / suzanne collins' the hunger games / battle royale / state-sponsored brutal murderous game show authority abuse dystopia media homage in general!! especially when it's homoerotic and full of ptsd and institutional abuse, because clearly this is a plot primarily for archie and the lads. imo the long walk ("how bad do you have to hate yourself to join the military" but it's game show horror) and the hunger games ("child stardom is traumatic institutional abuse especially in the era of social media and society simply pretends not to see it" but make it a ya game show adventure) should be the main references, but we could work the academic/art-competition angle of battle royale for kevin. as a treat. ok yeah and maybe work in that arnold schwarzenneger movie the running man too while we're here picking up interwoven motifs at the store. why not!

its been so fucking insane being online since like. the mid to late 90s and seeing how its changed, and how its changed SOCIETY
my family were early adopters of computers and internet, because my dad worked in IT (not one of the rich jobs in it lol), so I got to see it grow from "Thing a bunch of nerds use" to "thing everyone uses". I got to see the Usenet Oracle, I got to see the "information superhighway" era when everyone was rushing to put everything informative on here. I got to make a geocities site when I was a teenager, made out of ms paint collages. I played on forums before flash was a thing, and i remember as flash rose up as a thing you had to download before you could use instead of acting in realtime, all the way to its fall. I was (inadvisably) on 4chan in its early days and saw the advent of the Rickroll, and got to watch as that went mainstream. I had a myspace and a friendster and a livejournal, I had Digg back when it was known as the major competitor to Reddit. I watched as webcomics drifted from "two gamers on a couch" and stick figures into stuff art students made to show off their skills, into it being far too much effort for not enough pay like it is today. I was in IRC chats playing Mafia long before anyone knew what Among Us was.
Idk. I'm hardly the longest-running user of internet around these days but it really is bizarre looking back on all that and seeing what its all led to. In retrospect it all seemed inevitable, but things always do. I know we can never fully go back to how things used to be, but I do hope whatever phase of the internet comes next, its a little more like the whimsy and joy it once was, and a little less like the discourse and drama hell it currently is.

emily antonia. she/her. prehistoric millenial. a relic of the Before Times.
obligatory welcome post. this is a marvel sideblog. i follow from @sithdownani.
about me: i still have the original .zip file containing every single issue of marvel's civil war that i downloaded in 2010. old enough to remember printing copy-pasted a"friend"gers tower-era fanfics from livejournal so i could read them in the middle of my university history classes. literally wept for joy when they announced avengers 1 was greenlit by paramount studios. i am ancient. don't mess with me.
what i like: wanda. tony stark. loki. steve rogers, a.k.a. peter's original father figure. deadpool's sparkly nail polish collection. wandavision has been my otp since kindergarten. wanda and pietro are magneto's kids period. the one where literally everyone adopts peter parker. earth 3490. did i mention i love wanda? i really love wanda.
favorite fandom tropes: clint in the vents. peter, resident Youth of avenger's tower, eating peanut butter straight out of the jar at 2 a.m. steve sleeping on a grease-stained sofa in the corner of tony's workshop. bucky and sam being buckyandsam. coulson will always be everyone's favorite. kate and yelena are everyone's problem.
what i do not like: people forgetting that a lot of these comics were written for kids who felt (and feel) like outsiders. fandom drama. The Bad Ending.
under the cut: myspace survey from 2008 (to really drive home that i am too old to be here) in case, for some reason, you want to know more about me:
1. Ever been to a professional sports game? i bleed los angeles blue
2. Ever get engaged? yeah. i'm getting married about it.
3. Have you ever been on TV? yes.
4. Ever been to prom? only under duress.
5. Ever stayed up for 24 hours or more? i once hallucinated a blue coyote running across all 15 lanes of the southbound 405 through some part of orange county because it was 3 a.m., i'd just ended my third consecutive 12 hour work shift of the week, and my daily commute was 2 hours one-way
6. Have you ever been to a concert? favorite performance i ever saw was a defunct j-pop boyband front-man who happened to be playing at the nokia club for mysterious reasons
7. Have you ever been in a car accident? sideswiped by a big rig the day of my university music department audition. got a scholarship for showing up anyway.
8. Did you ever learn another language? studied classical latin in high school because apparently i had big plans for updating the roman empire
9. Do you wear make-up? you mean modern war paint? i sleep in it, baby
10. Ever caught the stove on fire? once caught the house on fire with a loaded drier and burned the entire place to the ground
11. Ever meet someone famous? in my misspent youth i was almost internet famous for writing a novel about two guys who ate a lot of ramen and beat the shit out of each other.
...so yeah, that's me. 'sup.

ANONYMOUS ASKED : i'm very tempted to join this but even when the 2000s where my times i feel a lil bit insecure about how my muse would develop in this setting, i mean: is this gonna unfold like any other city/town rp? focusing on character development and such just with myspace instead of instagram and livejournal instead of tumblr? if it's not much to ask, could you give me some insight into how this is gonna work? maybe elaborate on your idea?
Tumblr media
this is such a fair question ! i am trying to aim for a city rp kind of vibe with an open world / slice - of - life concept but with the added caveat that it just so happens to take place during a time without as much social media or internet influence ya know ? so more room for the characters to have in person interactions and to touch on a sort of nostalgia of the era that i know a lot of people my age & older may have ! ultimately , i want it to feel like you're playing a character in an episode from an early 2000s sitcom set in 2004 or a movie from then ya know ? and i encourage all our muns to sort of take that energy of ridiculous situations we watched some of our fav characters get themselves into and see how the maneuver thru them , if any of that makes sense ? hopefully it does and if not , feel free to mssg me and i'll do my best to explain it . thank you for your question !

Formerly known as Wish Upon A Blue Moon
I wasn't using Tumblr as often as other sites so I'd closed it but I want a place to reconnect with people if twitter goes down. There I am networked with #SpoonieChat and #NEISvoid plus #FatTwitter and various political discussions. I follow lots of history and Anthro accounts there too. It looks like it's going downhill fast with Elon in charge and acting out. Being older and chronically ill I wasn't, at first, looking for another social media site. I don't have energy to keep up with many. I've been on the internet since the early 90s and my first college Unix-based forum. I've gone through livejournal (still have mine) and have a dreamwidth account, a Facebook, a Wordpress blog, another blog I lost track of, a Myspace (too many blinking things) and ran my own Invision Power board forum which dwindled after Facebook sucked up a lot of the oxygen. I'm weary of starting over.
Being chronically ill with increasingly fragile health in the era of Covid, however, is socially isolating. So I want to be reachable in more than one place since people will spread out to different sites as twitter suffers inept and even malicious management.

thinking about how in a hundred years from now (if *joker voice* society exists as we know it still) the internet will have entirely new social networks and memes and everything that's huge right now like twitter and tiktok and facebook and youtube will be the equivalent of myspace and livejournal except amplified by x100 bc they'll be relics of a bygone era...like it's crazy that we're here to witness the Beginning of big social networks on internet because if humanity manages to pull through and survive the next couple hundred years the internet isnt going to just go away...it'll evolve and people are gonna be making memes about the "old internet" and it's just crazy to me that like if I great grandkids they'll be like "wow grandma did you really use to have a tumblr account?" and theyll be all using some new shit we cant even conceive of yet and all the shit we use now will be considered old people stuff...like wtf. we make fun of our grandparents for using old people shit but someday that's gonna be us...idk I'm very drunk and it took me a long time to type this but im having an existential crisis right now
