There's a lot of things to say about queer spaces and communities, and how great they are. but i have a lot to say about how horrible they are. more specifically how horrible they are to men

This entire thing is based on my, and my friends experiences as men and trans men in the queer community

In general, men are made to feel unwelcome in queer spaces, we're made to feel like we're intruding, as if we're a danger to everyone. Our opinions are ignored and pushed aside, our existence glossed over whenever discussion happens.

Look at all the "queer art boards" you see here on tumblr, or all the people shouting inclusivity in queer spaces. 99% of the time, those art boards and all that inclusivness is simply sapphic + non binary people. All the art posted is about women, trans women, and sapphic relations, all discussion is always about sapphic people and non binary people. I don't remember the last time men came up in such a discussion when it wasn't in a horribly negative context.

Speaking of negative context, it has become a wide spread thing in both queer spaces and progressive spaces that whenever something goes wrong where a man was somewhere involved, the response is "ugh, men". Which is plain sexist and bigoted, but that bigotry is considered cool and hip in the queer community.

And the few times any of us tried to speak up in these spaces before, we were waved away, our opinions dismissed because we are men.

i'm making this post because i'm so tired, so tired of not seeing representation for me. not feeling welcome in communities where i'm supposed to, not feeling like the spaces are safe, because for men they aren't

Okay, this is definitely a controversial topic so I'm going to preface this by saying that this is my own personal opinion.

I think that anyone of any gender or sexuality can write for whoever or whatever they want, that's the beauty of fan fiction. In that same regard, anyone can choose what types of fan fiction they choose to consume. For example, I don't really read a lot of mlm content simply because it doesn't appeal to me and I can't relate to it.

Unless something is super problematic (like underage sex or nonconsensual scenes as a few examples), I think that people can write whatever they want, and if you don't like it, then don't read it.

I wasn't aware that people hated cishet men crushing on Wanda? I personally don't care, as long as cishet men aren't interacting with my posts and fetishizing my content. I post sapphic/wlw posts, so having a cishet man interact like that would be unwelcome.

As long as minors aren't interacting with my content, and people aren't being creepy about the things I write, I don't really care who interacts with my stuff.

And I can't seem to differentiate "woman/man-aligned" from "woman/man-adjacent" in my head. Because i see woman-aligned grouped with terms like "wlw/sapphic people and woman-aligned people who love women" or "women and woman-aligned" often in blog bios saying who is and is not welcome to follow (here is the only place I've seen male-aligned - as "do not follow if you are male/male-aligned")

I have come to understand the intention of the -aligned langue - in the West we are all subject to two gender roles in society and while our actual genders may be nonbinary/queer we often find ourselves more aligned with/familiar with/receiving a similar experience to one gender role than the other. And so the terms should allow discussion about general western society-broad experiences based on assigned or perceived categories.

But it just feels now like they're used to say "basically a woman"/"basically a man" or "a woman/man but don't want to admit it"

And I feel like it leaves trans people in an awkward state. What if you're AFAB but you aren't medically transitioning and never "'pass""? Are you still woman-aligned because you are treated as a woman by strangers and the medical institution? What if you're AMAB who is medically transitioning, but later in life? Do you ""qualify"" for being woman-aligned or do your years of being perceived as a man mean your societal treatment makes you man-aligned?

(Note: I put ""pass"" and ""qualify"" in double quotation marks to show how dubious I find the concepts)

I guess what I'm getting at is I worry the use of "woman/man-aligned" is getting a bit trans exclusionary. Because I have never really seen them defined (except as purely identity based which is not how I perceive them being used) it looks as if they're being used to say all AFAB people (except potentially stealth trans men) can claim woman-alignment/are really women, and all AMAB (except potentially stealth trans women) must claim man-aligned/are actually men.

I don't know if I've just misinterpreted it all though. What are other people's perceptions and experiences with this terminology?
