Who wants yesterday's papers?

I pride myself on being an early adopter when it comes to computers. I bought my first -- an IBM 8086 -- in 1981 for a king's ransom, over $4000. Paid extra to get an 8088 math processor doncha know. (I'm going from memory here, so forgive me if I have the #s wrong. Well, not the $s, that pain is burned in my brain).

What followed was learning the wonders of Lotus 1-2-3, later MS-DOS, BASIC-A, and other assorted foreign languages. This is all a long way around the horn to get to what I accomplished this afternoon: learning how to use ftp, a technology abandoned some 20 years ago. But it works for my purposes...getting files from an Android device to my PC.

Yes, there are other ways, but there are no USB ports on my device and I like the satisfaction of getting a new process tweaked in and working just the way I want. The path is:

IPTV>ONN>ftp>PC>PLEX>PLEX>wifi>SmartTV.

And amazingly it works.

IBM Plex is the font(s) used by the publishing group of my favorite author, Ilona Andrews, which is free to use for anyone who wants to. I think that's neat and I've been using it for books lately.

But I am bad at telling what font size looks good on the computer looks good in print! So I'm printing a selection of examples and made a book of it.

I used IBM plex sans and serif in 8, 9, 10 and 11 size, and then 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, 11.5. This will be my reference guide.

I printed it like it will be a case-bound (aka hardcover) book but I'm not sure if I'll actually make it a hard cover. Might experiment!

Edit from September: I never did bind these into an actual book. The signatures are still hanging around though in case I need to reference them..

Completely reworked the in-game UI of my game Crazy Critters Attack! I chose a more industrial style for the UI with big metal buttons, caution tape and LCD screens. I also docked the level progress to the left side of the screen instead of leaving it as a weird tab below everything else. Lastly, I picked some new fonts! Before I was just using one of my computer's built-in system fonts, and now I'm using Rubik and IBM Plex Mono.

This is a rant about Mai Yamok (ๆ)

To give some context, I’m a Thai person and I write semi-academic articles on the side.

When I saw this warning, I was delighted that they had spaces in front and also behind Mai Yamok (ๆ). Mai Yamok is used to denote a repeat of the last 1-2 words and according to the Royal Institute, you are supposed to leave spaces both in front and behind it.

This is due to the fact that in the olden days, Mai Yamok represented the number 2 which in the Thai numbering system looks like this ๒, you can probably see the similarities. Because of this, Mai Yamok is supposed to have spaces before and after like numbers.

Here is a comparison; the top row is a font made from 16th century Thai script called Thai Yo (ไทยย่อ), as you can see the number 2 and Mai Yamok is the same, middle row is the font used for government documents, Sarabun New and the bottom row is a sans serif font called IBM Plex Sans

But Thai people usually don’t do that, they usually leave a space behind (ie. เร็วๆ หน่อย) or no space at all (ie. เร็วๆหน่อย) and that annoys the hell out of me.

I am such a grammar police to a level that I always point out when they get it right (or wrong). It makes my reading comprehension worse, as I will immediately be taken out of the text due to this mistake. Many friends of mine are annoyed when I do this.

After this sidetrack, it is good to see that the team behind this actually know proper punctuation, the proper Mai Yamok spacing is not widely known and is usually practiced by Thai teachers or people who really care (like me). It’s refreshing to see they get it right ngl. I can sleep soundly tonight because of this 😭

„Was machst du eigentlich den ganzen Tag?“ – kurz WMDEDGT – fragt Frau Brüllen immer am Monatsfünften. Es soll die alte Tradition des Tagebuchbloggens zumindest für einen Tag im Monat beleben. Im Blog von Frau Brüllen werden die Beiträge dann immer gesammelt. Hier ist der aktuelle Monat.

Es ist ein ganz normaler Montag.

[3:00] Ich bringe das große Kind zurück in ihr eigenes Bett. Sie war vor einer halben Stunde unter meine Decke gekrochen. Eigentlich will ich einfach nur schlafen, aber wir hatten vereinbart, dass sie mal wieder eine komplette Nacht in ihrem eigenen Bett verbringen soll. Konsequenz in der Erziehung: so wichtig. Ich beiße in den sauren Apfel und trage das Kleinkind ohne Gegenwehr hinüber. Dann bin ich erstmal wach.

[5:00] Nach dem nächsten Schlafzyklus klettert wieder eine Maus über mich drüber. Konsequenz in der Erziehung: so egal, wenn man einfach nur schlafen will.

[6:25] Fünf Minuten vor dem Wecker kann ich den kleinen Herrn nicht mehr ignorieren, der schon längst hellwach ist, seine Morgenmilch und Aufmerksamkeit möchte. Klein-Lea und ich stehen auf. Dann mache ich Morgendinge: Nasszelle, Brotboxen, frühstücken, Zähneputzen, Kinder einsammeln, ihnen die Zähne putzen, alle anziehen und für die Kita einpacken.

[8:30] Nachdem ich die Kinder abgeliefert habe, komme ich im Büro an. Etwas mehr als eine Stunde habe ich noch meine Ruhe, bevor die erste Kollegin kommt.

[10:30] Ab nun beginnt ein Meetingmarathon, der fast ohne Pausen bis zum Feierabend anhält.

[18:15] Ich fahre nach Hause. Dort erwartet mich eine Mutter, die auf dem Boden kriecht, um die Kinder zu belustigen, die freudvoll schreien. Wie schön, dass alle gut drauf sind. :)

[18:45] Mich hat außerdem ein voller Teller mit noch lauwarmen Nudeln erwartet. Ich aß sie und faltete noch schnell die Wäsche aus dem Korb, den ich aus dem Keller mitgebracht hatte. Nun bringe ich Klein-Lea ins Bett.

[19:30] Das Zubettbringen hat heute wieder mal ein wenig länger gedauert. Es gibt Schlimmeres, als Geschichten von Rabe Socke und Conni vorzulesen.

[20:00] Ich blogge noch eben (winke-winke!), dann schauen wir Tagesschau und ein Stückchen vom Dschungelcamp weiter. Wir sind schon bei Sonntag – vor einer Woche. Ein bisschen hintendran sind wir, also bitte nicht spoilern!

[22:00] Wir werden ins Bett gegangen sein.

¡Hola! La verdad es que sí, todos mis ratos libres son para BG3 desde el día que salió 😂

Mis fuentes favoritas... A ver, mis fuentes más constantes son Playfair Display/Abril Fatface, Raleway, Open Sans, y Source Code Pro/IBM Plex Mono. Son "the ol' reliable bunch"; sé que si algo no funciona, es posible que les ponga alguna de estas y quede bien. Como fuente decorativa, creo que areminiscentsmile es de mis fuentes favoritas para usar, sobre todo en proyectos personales, porque no sé por qué siempre encaja con las temáticas que solemos montar los partners y yo.

Pero como fuente que haya usado lately y que quiera usar más a menudo, diría que una que mencioné hace poquito, Gloock. Es una fuente muy linda y del estilo de PD/AF, que nunca viene mal tener en el arsenal. Estaría bien que tuviera más weights/itálica, pero por demás, es una fuente muy versátil.

Um cemitério para animais, denominado Jardim dos Animais, localizado em Rio Branco, pode estar afetando a qualidade da água na vizinhança. Por isso, o Ministério Público do Estado do Acre (MPAC) recomendou a suspensão das atividades até que sejam avaliados os riscos de contaminação.

A recomendação é da Promotoria de Justiça Especializada de Defesa do Meio Ambiente da Bacia Hidrográfica do Baixo Acre e solicita a suspensão imediata de novos sepultamentos no local, até que haja a conclusão de estudos técnicos que avaliem o impacto ambiental das atividades do empreendimento.

Na recomendação, o promotor de Justiça Alekine Lopes aponta que há a suspeita de que o funcionamento do cemitério pode estar afetando a qualidade da água de um açude nas proximidades e de um poço pertencente a um morador vizinho ao cemitério.

No documento, o órgão destaca que é responsabilidade do empreendedor comprovar a inexistência de riscos ambientais, por meio de apresentação de estudos técnicos que confirmem a regularidade ambiental do lugar.

O MP estabeleceu o prazo de 15 dias para que sejam realizadas análises laboratoriais da água do açude e do poço. Os laudos deverão ser enviados à Promotoria.

Além disso, o local deverá adotar medidas preventivas, incluindo a apresentação de um plano de manejo e descarte adequado dos resíduos.

O MPAC também fixou o prazo de 30 dias para que o cemitério informe as providências adotadas para o cumprimento da recomendação.
