Secrets of Computational Photography, #1: The front jacket. Download your FREE copy at my site (link in bio or darinboville dot com). Bob Aufuldish and I talked about the various design principles we thought would govern the book and then he created several candidates for the cover. This was not initially one of them, as I recall. From those original design ideas we iterated and then Bob showed me this one and I knew we had it. Simple, spartan. My name isn’t even on the front. Maybe not good for “branding” but I think very good for the book. Like we did throughout the book, we used the project images themselves as design elements—the background from Geological Exploration of the Moon, the text colors a “cut out” showing a glimpse of an image from Hello World! The title, Computational Photography, comes from our first book project meeting. Bob suggested it, noticing my way of working on many projects—setting a few algorithmic-like ground rules and then esthetically guiding the output. I wasn’t sure I liked the it at first but thought we’d use it as a working title.
