Transforming Healthcare: The Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT) Revolution

The Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT), also known as the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), is reshaping the healthcare landscape. It involves a network of interconnected devices designed to store and transmit patient information securely, offering unprecedented opportunities for improving patient care, enhancing medical practices, and even transforming the health insurance industry.
In this comprehensive guide, we explore the diverse applications of IoHT, its advantages, challenges, and the latest trends shaping the healthcare sector.
What is IoHT?
IoHT, short for the Internet of Healthcare Things, is a network of interconnected computing devices utilized for storing and transmitting patient information. These devices include ingestible sensors that use the FHIR protocol to communicate data over the internet, ultimately creating a digital patient care record.
Applications of IoT in Healthcare:
For Patients: IoHT empowers patients with personalized care through wearable devices such as fitness bands and wireless monitoring equipment. These devices, including blood pressure and heart rate monitors, can send reminders, track vital signs, and provide continuous medical monitoring. This technology is particularly transformative for elderly patients and individuals living alone, offering a safety net for their health.
For Physicians: IoHT enables physicians to monitor patients more effectively by leveraging wearables and home monitoring devices. Physicians can track treatment adherence and assess the need for emergency care, leading to proactive healthcare interventions. Data from IoT devices enhances communication between medical professionals and patients, facilitating more tailored treatment plans and improved outcomes.
For Health Insurance Companies: Health insurers benefit from IoT-connected devices by using health monitoring data for underwriting and claims processing. This data aids in identifying suitable candidates for coverage and detecting fraudulent claims. IoT devices enhance transparency between insurers and clients, providing customers with insights into the decision-making process.
Types of IoMT Devices
IoMT devices come in various forms:
Wearables-on the Body: These include biosensors for real-time health monitoring. Some are even implanted under the skin for discreet, continuous monitoring. The key categories are consumer health wearables (e.g., fitness bands) and clinical-grade wearables (used under medical supervision).
In Hospitals and Clinics: Large equipment and smart devices are used for patient monitoring, supply management, and environmental control in healthcare facilities. Leading MedTech companies employ IoMT for diagnosing and maintaining medical equipment.
Community IoMT: IoMT extends to communities, enabling tracking of patients during travel and offering remote healthcare services in non-traditional settings, such as field hospitals and kiosks for medication distribution.
Advantages of IoT in Healthcare:
IoT in healthcare offers numerous benefits:
Enhanced Quality: IoHT improves the quality of care by enabling personalized treatment plans and data-driven decision-making, supported by technologies like cloud computing, big data, and IoT.
Improved Patient Experience: Real-time data from connected devices allows doctors to make more accurate diagnoses, resulting in individualized care and an enhanced patient experience.
Reduced Costs: Unnecessary doctor visits decrease, and homecare services improve, reducing healthcare costs. Combining automation with data-driven approaches can lower expenses significantly.
Challenges of IoMT Healthcare Networks:
IoMT also presents unique challenges:
Data Security: The exchange of vast amounts of medical data makes healthcare systems vulnerable to cyber threats. Real-time data monitoring, cyber threat analysis, and secure networking technologies are crucial to mitigate these risks.
Regulatory Compliance: Strict regulations govern the use and safeguarding of sensitive medical data, requiring healthcare organizations to adhere to guidelines like those issued by the FDA for medical device cybersecurity.
Technical Challenges: Ensuring secure communication among IoMT devices is essential. Outdated systems may struggle to adapt to evolving security guidelines and interoperability requirements.
Popular Trends in IoMT in 2022:
Several trends are shaping IoMT in 2022:
Nano-Enabled Medical Products: Nanotechnology-based medical devices, including medications and diagnostics, are gaining popularity for their potential in diagnosing and treating various health conditions.
Personalized Healthcare: Rising chronic conditions and health awareness are driving demand for personalized healthcare. Wearable devices and biosensors enable continuous monitoring and reduce the burden on healthcare institutions.
Connected Inhalers: IoT-connected inhalers help patients identify triggers for pulmonary problems and ensure correct usage, improving the management of respiratory conditions.
Market Outlook: The IoMT market is on a growth trajectory, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.9% from 2019 to 2025. In 2020, the market size was USD 219.5 billion, projected to reach USD 534.3 billion by 2025.
Conclusion
The Internet of Healthcare Things is revolutionizing healthcare by providing real-time data, personalized care, and cost-effective solutions. IoMT devices are reshaping patient care records, enhancing communication between patients and healthcare providers, and driving innovations in healthcare. As IoMT continues to evolve, it holds the promise of further improving the quality and accessibility of healthcare services.

How does graystripe keep insulting stonefur?
minor spoilers for chapters 1 and 2 of "in offering to hestia" (i.e., more than can be inferred from the premise, but if you've, say, read the househunter jokes...)
so BASICALLY greystripe...well let's start with he doesn't have a riverclan value system. i'm not going to harp on this too much because i've rambled about it already, but the key points of contrast here are:
thunderclan warriors are usually given explicit directions; riverclan warriors would find that insulting
thunderclan does not expect fathers to be involved with the raising of their kits; riverclan has a more egalitarian approach
thunderclan is (relatively) meritocratic; riverclan is strongly nepotistic
thunderclan leadership is absolute; riverclan leadership is...at the very least, led more by a council than a single cat (leader + deputy + seer + keeper, where the leader synthesizes the physical, spiritual, and social needs of the clan as informed to them by their deputy, seer, and keeper)
thunderclan has...i don't know the right word, but their relationship to worship is very individual and not much an explicit part of their daily lives; riverclan embeds spirituality into their daily routines verbally (if that makes sense, i think if you've read some of my works on the two clans this might be clearer than me trying to phrase it as a direct comparison as such)
there's a lot more, but those are the big ones. interesting note here that riverclan's relationship to egalitarianism and nepotism (in and out of ioth) is not cut and dry. they have Nuance and Layers and the way their leadership interacts with the rest of the clan is at play. but that's not relevant here.
so. why does he insult stonefur (accidentally) all the time? well, stonefur:
isn't given explicit instructions on what to do during his day
is the primary caretaker for his kits
has power in riverclan on the sole grounds that he is leopardstar's mate
has real power in riverclan in a role that thunderclan has no good equivalent to
has a religiously significant role that impacts day-to-day life in riverclan
so greystripe's perceptions of stonefur are complicated (he knows him as An Honourable Warrior, but now he's getting to know him personally), but focusing on the five bits i'm going through:
he's not going to see stonefur as "doing something" for the clan, because there's little/no verbal acknowledgement of it
he's not going to see stonefur as raising his kits (especially when they're still nursing and therefore leopardstar is necessarily also often in the nursery)
he's not going to see why stonefur has authority
he's not going to understand that stonefur legitimately has authority
he's not going to have respect for the religious elements of riverclan, which stonefur is invested in
greystripe, of course, isn't trying to be insulting. but he knows leopardstar hates him, so he sees mistyfoot as the cat to keep on his side if he wants to stick around, without realizing stonefur has equal or greater importance to that.
so he's not focusing his efforts on figuring out how to Effectively interact with stonefur which means
he's not going to acknowledge the things stonefur does for the clan (in clarification, that while no one is going to tell stonefur to repair the elders' den, the elders are still going to thank him. greystripe is looking for the first part to do the second part)
he's going to assume stonefur is helping leopardstar raise their kits (diminishing the work stonefur is doing)
he's not going to look to stonefur as someone who can instruct him/give him something to do, i.e., he's going to look to mistyfoot for something to do (in camp, which is stonefur's space)
he's not going to listen to stonefur like he would mistyfoot or leopardstar
he gets that he doesn't understand their religion but he's not going to understand the implications of that wrt stonefur
so he just...fucks up a lot because he doesn't realize that he can fuck up in a given way.
uhhh if that was unclear lemme know i wrote it in a few blocks without rereading in between writing sessions so hopefully it was coherent

إنترنت الأشياء عندما تكون إنترنت الأشياء الصحية
IoT to IoHT
(PGD) patient-generated data

I just got out of class for the day, and I really wish I could help jog your brain more, specially since you said you were gonna @ me, but alas I'm my own worst enemy and I have stuff to do I've procrastinated way too much on. So, in the meantime have a few religion questions.
How do RC cats view prayer? Do they think the StarClan cats expect something in return for their answering them or do they think their assistance is freely given? Do they address it to whoever? To StarClan as a whole? If addressed to individuals, do they think factors such as the nature of the request or whether or not it's a direct ancestor affect how effective the assistance is going to be? How are their views on all this similar and different from other clans?
me: i want to talk about riverclan rn
me: *doesn't answer this for over an hour*
anyway that's Minor okay.
i skimmed thru the whole wikipedia page for prayer just to make sure i'm not like. u'know. Terribly Biased here.
so. riverclan places the Least emphasis on prayer as an act of...what's the word. fuck. asking for things. they certainly do it, but compare to thunderclan, where prayer focuses almost solely on requests. (shadowclan and windclan fall somewhere in between. skyclan (modern) is almost exclusively phrased as, "the [strength/etc] to [request]", but also in-between.)
the general view is that...if you're, okay. stepping back for a second because answering questions in order here is not Entirely Helpful. but. riverclan places a lot of emphasis on ancestor worship. (not that they would Call it that, mind.) and there's...a Lot to that re. communication with the dead and the shrines and holidays.
so. why? well -- because it's good. it's the right thing to do. uh. fuck. is it filial duty? is that the phrase? fuck. whatever. you know it's just. what you're supposed to do.
so: riverclan doesn't Really do direct requests to individuals in the same way, say, thunderclan does. (thunderclan, feat. i had to look up thrushpelt's mom for that one line in icyhwm.) there's the understanding that Directly Asking those who have passed would be...rude? disrespectful? like -- you are only caretaking their memory because you want something.
riverclan, again, can avoid direct communication when it comes to Tasks To Complete.
but. you know. if a cat were to go to their mate's shrine and mention their kits were close to being warriors and they sure hope their assessments go well, the implied meaning is, please help them do well.
i'll cut past that, i just wanted to establish what it looks like.
anyway, so making a request is a bit of an effort. it's kind of like...the emotional experience of wanting to ask your mom something so you do nice things and you swear you don't want anything and then you try to thread the needle so you've asked her long enough after she's forgotten but recently enough she's still in a good mood. y'know? is that a reasonably common childhood experience? i think it is?
right like. of course you're not being Extra Attentive because you're going to mention something that it sure would be nice if they helped out with. etc.
that said, the idea is that you're already dedicated enough that it wouldn't be rude to make a request.
but. well. yeah. that Varies a Whole Lot. and regardless, it would be Terribly Rude to not bring Something or the Other if you had a request.
(cats who feel...like. cats who feel they don't like...like they've hurt someone/done wrong/etc might specifically separate speaking to the dead and the act of bringing a gift, as a sort of -- i don't want you to fulfill any requests. they're trying to fail in an obligation, but then repay their debt.)
in day to day life, the general idea is related to...like. actions and physical space. embody what you want to see in your life. make places beautiful and harmonious for good things. etc.
and then the Other Thing is that there are a few major holidays. i don't want to...okay. i don't want to Swear to this because atm i don't want to check in the long-ass file this is written down in (icbtyssm, ch. 3), but. i BELIEVE it is greenleaf's end that is accompanied by placing things in the river as a form of request. there's...a lot of variety to what this means, but it's an appeal to the moon.
there's no form of repayment. the moon is the mother of all cats, but she also trascends them. she does not guarantee any request, but...you make it anyway.
(riverclan has other stuff going on with the moon. some of their beliefs are actually very similar to common loner beliefs. for example, on the night of the sleeping moon/new moon, all riverclan cats who are able (i.e., of reasonable age and in reasonable health) stay up all night, so that the moon can take her rest.)
vaguely related, but riverclan views shrines as...touchpoints to starclan, specific to a cat. that's why their maintenance is so important: once one falls into disrepair, there's no guarantee that connection can be reestablished. (yes, tnp is terribly distressing because of that. cats do what they can, but -- who knows if the spirits can reconnect to them?)
that's also why the timeline of their construction is so important: they believe it takes somewhere between a full day and a full three days for a cat to complete the journey down the river. no one knows for sure, and no cat in starclan has ever said. but if you fail to build a shrine in that time, there's no guarantee their spirit will be able to find it.
it's also why their locations are generally secret. while the intentional destruction of a shrine is a severe crime, it's a hard crime to prove, and do you really want to take that chance?
anyway, as for efficacy: when it comes to ancestors, it's...much like thunderclan (who is going to appeal to a specific individual based on some aspect of their life), they're not going to ask like. a seer to make sure their apprentice does well in their training.
but the understanding is -- if you have held your part, they will do what it is in their power to assist you.
and for the moon, it's...you hope. requests are often more symbolic in that sense: two cats too young to formally court (i.e., apprentices) might send matching flowers to her. cats may send trinkets from an ex to symbolize moving on, as a different cat offers one from their mate/...suitor? as a symbol of dedication. it's a request from you to the moon that is not necessarily of public meaning.
in some sense, it's similar to a new year's resolution. the moon rarely interferes in the lives of cats. but. you know. maybe she will give you strength -- or send someone to you.
as for the other clans:
thunderclan is deeply about direct requests to specific ancestors, but they agree that prayer is personal.
windclan and shadowclan both focus on prayer as a group affair, which puts them at big odds with riverclan.
shadowclan also has their own moon thing going on, but the moon is less a figure of love and more...of all-seeing-ness. riverclan celebrates on no moon nights because fuck, if you're going to be up, why not have a good time? shadowclan celebrates because there's no moon keeping an eye on you, so fuck, why not have a good time?
(well okay, think like. a kit getting to stay up as late as they can stand. no one is doing any purge shit. it's just...a night when everyone lets their hair down, so to speak.)
yeah. i'm sure there are other details i'm missing, but that's the Big stuff for other clans.
OH MY GOD I ALMOST FORGOT
okay this is (naturally) specific to ioht but for Prayer Purposes keepers have a whole set of traditions. i'm still like...fleshing them out, but.
you're really, really not supposed to ask keepers for something unless you have a very desparate need. (a) it can be hard for keepers to leave camp and you don't want to give them a reason to stick around by making them feel needed. (something which is also close to thunderclan beliefs, and why keepers have special funeral rites.) and (b) they've given a Lot of themselves to the clan as is. (this also applies to leaders, deputies, and seers. it's just that like. there are reasons you might ask a seer for something no other cat could provide, and deputies are usually not as high up on this priority list. leaders are usually left alone, but they don't have point (a) as additional motivation to avoid making requests of them.)
keepers aren't viewed as having any Explicit additional power, but you know. they tend to be well-loved. so. they might be able to rally forces, so to speak. or say you don't know Who to ask. then -- you can ask a keeper.
and because of family and riverclan and so on, there's a whole shrine (well, like, it's complicated it's one place with many shrines but they all blend together and...) and protocol to it. (the family of a keeper usually makes them a private shrine as well. no one is sure if they're visited, and it's not a practice that is Discussed, but they want a private place to grieve. of course, it's known about, and some question if it should be permissible. what if it's keeping them tethered in two places? what if it makes it harder for them to move on? it's a hot riverclan theology debate, phrased purely through hypotheticals.)
anyway i'm still sorting out some ideas and what not. the current keeper is general the only cat with open access (for maintenance, where "the keeper of the shrines" comes from), but they're not in charge of moderating visitation. that's the seer's responsibility. it's only accessible during certain periods.
since there's no Assumption that you're making a request, you'd only get side-eye for spending undue time or making excessive visits. sometimes you just want to pay respects.
but there's a whole protocol and stuff to it. i'm not decided when Exactly it's open, other than i'm tinkering with storms? for reasons re. storm related celebrations in riverclan. it'd be a time when, if what i'm currently marinating pans out, the keeper Couldn't maintain the shrine, meaning it could be visited freely without interfering with what they're doing.
uh. yeah. i mentioned "keepers have special funeral rites" and literally never elaborated on the matter. so. that's half of it.

IoT and The Rise of the Machines in Healthcare
As connected devices proliferate within health care enterprises and across the health care ecosystem, cybersecurity risks abound.
During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the health care sector was profoundly affected by cyber-attacks on connected devices, we learn in the report, Rise of the Machines 2021: State of Connected Devices – IT, IoT, IoMT and OT from Ordr.
For this annual report, Ordr analyzed security risks across over 500 deployments in healthcare, life sciences, retail, and manufacturing sectors for the 12 months June 2020 through June 2021.
In health care, outdated operating systems present some of the greatest risks: 15% of medical devices and 32% of medical imaging tools run on outdated operating systems. “This is because many medical devices remain in operation for a number of years and cannot be easily replaced for cost reasons,” Ordr explains in the report.
In medical facilities, one-half of the cyber-attacks were on medical devices, the circle graph illustrates. The next most-likely connected devices to be attacked in health care were IP Phones (22%), followed by network devices (11%).
During the pandemic, health care providers needed to deal with the security of devices rapidly procured and deployed within institutions and also outside the walls of providers, such as in field hospitals meeting the surge of coronavirus patients.
“During the chaos and confusion, threat actors launched cyberattacks,” Ordr observed in the wake of the public health crisis.
In this Rise of the Medical Machines, the major risks for health care organizations were that,
68% of health care deployments had more than 10 FDA recalls
32% of medical imaging devices were running on unsupported operating systems, and
15% of medical devices were running on unsupported operating systems.
Among the top medical devices most threatened were infusion pumps (48%), patient monitoring (15%), and glucose monitors (just under 5%).
Ordr’s CEO Greg Murphy warns: “As the number of connected devices climbs, the number and sophistication of attacks targeting them will grow.”
Health Populi’s Hot Points: Beyond the Internet of Things, RAND has been thinking about the Internet of Bodies, how wearable (external) and digestible or implantable (internal) sensors can help people track wellness and illness with the promise of benefiting overall health.
These can cover us head-to-toe, inside and outside as the drawing from RAND’s report on IoB illustrates. The IoB ecosystem includes the technologies that are part of the health care Internet of Things, as well as EHRs, robotic surgery systems, and smart ventilators which also generate data about peoples’ health and wellness.
These technologies are emerging from both the medical-tech developers as well as consumer-grade and -facing companies: think HIMSS and RSNA vis-a-vis CES/the Consumer Technology Association. I noted the Yin-and-Yang-and the Blur of this health data ecosystem in 2013 when I attended CES, HIMSS and South-by-Southwest in a matter of weeks, kicking tires on digital health developments at all three events.
Back to the Ordr report, noting the rise of also the Internet of Stranger Things, abounding. In addition to a proliferation of Alexa devices, which we know are also part of consumers’ and providers’ health care voice-enabling devices, Ordr points to connected cars, connected fitness, and connected games.
Take Peloton, which grew like topsy during the pandemic: the connected fitness category, which Peloton exemplifies, is fast-expanding based on the Consumer Technology Association’s latest forecast on consumer electronics, 2017-2022: connected exercise equipment was scarcely quantifiable in 2017 (selling 284,000 units with revenue of $142 million). By 2022, CTA projects that connected exercise equipment will reach sales of 2.5 million units with revenues of $4.5 billion.
That $4.5 bn is akin to four and a half blockbuster drugs in the pharma world.
We can expect connected fitness, gaming, voice, and autos will all connect to our health care in the growing Internet of Healthy Things. The supply and demand side for this is clear to forecast in my scenario planning these days.
What’s unclear is how public policy and regulation can/will meet this moment. There are ethical and privacy/security issues abounding as the Internet of Healthy Things abounds. How to protect vulnerable groups of people? How to ensure that devices are meant for well-being and not exploitation? How to protect peoples’ privacy, using perhaps the GDPR or CCPA (California’s privacy protection) as models for a national approach to American health citizens’ privacy? How to ensure insurers, employers, and others use IoHT and IoB data in the context of health and wellness with the opt-in of health citizens?
Let’s ensure the inevitable Rise of the Machines bake in trust and privacy-by-design to benefit all health citizens.
