The digital IS physical
Our technological doublespeak is worrying because it enables us to forget that all technology has a physical presence. Once we divorce the physical from the digital, we forget that the same rules of the physical world apply to the digital.

The image above is from this Wired story on one Google data center. These centers are physical manifestations of our data. The “cloud” is not vapor, it’s racks of servers inside of giant warehouses with air conditioning blasting away. And that’s not even touching on the extended content delivery networks that exist at ISPs to ensure that content such as streaming video reaches us quickly.
Digital goods need to be housed in something physical. As a result, we are confronted by age-old problems of scarcity: there is only so much space for servers in the world.
Here is Bill Gates completely missing the point of the physicality of digital goods:
Software doesn’t work like this. Microsoft might spend a lot of money to develop the first unit of a new program, but every unit after that is virtually free to produce. Unlike the goods that powered our economy in the past, software is an intangible asset. And software isn’t the only example: data, insurance, e-books, even movies work in similar ways.
Software, even if it does not get sold on physical media, must still be transmitted through physical systems. As a result, it is subject to the same constraints as physical goods. Take Netflix’s content delivery network. This network provides Netflix with a geographic advantage that allows it to be close to customers and deliver fast streams. However, there is only so much space for these servers to be close to people. There is scarcity despite the fact that the movie exists digitally.
Why is turning the digital into something non physical worrying? I think we are at a point now where we think we do not need the physical anymore. Everything is just streamed or in the cloud and so on. As a result we stop requiring physical proof of something’s existence. And that is why we also live in a world where companies can exist that produce nothing and lose money indefinitely. It’s why we are comfortable with known Ponzi schemes such as Uber, slack, chew and the endless list of startups going public.
