Please feel free not to answer for any reason but I was wondering what people's opinions are on the communist resistance in Greece during WW2 and the civil war? I'm trying to learn more about modern Greek history since I'm not in Greece but I have no idea what people think about communists in Greece. Thank you and I hope you have a good day! :)
Hello! This is a great question with a very complex answer. I will try to keep my answer as short and simple as possible because I typically try to keep this blog politics-free (ok sometimes I too can't help it), for no other reason than that politics (or the poor understanding of politics) can poison and ruin any genuinely good-meaning Greek effort. It's the ultimate Greek vice and the true reason for 90% of our problems historically. Since antiquity.
During WW2 and the Axis Occupation of Greece the Left Wing formed EAM (the National Resistance Front) and its respective military faculty ELAS (Greek People's Liberation Army). The participation of the Greek people was massive. There was also a right wing resistance army (EDES), however it never managed to compare to the impact EAM - ELAS had. Whatever you may know abroad about the Greek Resistance in WW2 is 70-80% thanks to EAM - ELAS. This enormous contribution cannot be overlooked and it is respected unanimously by Greeks of all political ideologies nowadays. Maybe some ultra nationalists are a little more frugal with their praises but in general there is unanimous respect and commemoration of EAM's activity during the Axis invasion of Greece.
This however is not the same reception most (non-Communist) Greeks had and have for the Communists prior and especially after the end of WW2. I will try to turn an insanely long and complicated story into something simple. Greece in the first half of the 20th century was a conservative western oriented kingdom. Due to this, communists were usually perceived very negatively and in fact they were even persecuted and exiled during short lived right wing dictatorships. The Greek Communist Party (KKE) was legalised and outlawed all the time like it was a tennis match.
After WW2 and the impact of EAM - ELAS, the momentum the Left had in the Greek society was tremendous. At the same time war ravaged Greece was a state that had to be rebuilt from scratch. When the Civil War first broke out in 1944, some parts of Greece were still occupied by the Axis Powers, 90% of Greece's infrastructure was destroyed, 1/7 of the population had perished from famine or extermination and the government was only just returning from exile. So when we say it had to be rebuilt from scratch amidst utter chaos, it's literal. A National Unity government with a prominent Greek politician (we'd call him a socialist) with very good relations with the British and the Americans was established in the country with the direct open interference of the Allied Forces. Initially, there were plans that the official regular Greek army that had to be re-recruited would be 50% manned with trained ELAS guerillas, as a reward for their contribution in liberating significant parts of the country, while the rest 50% would be manned by the various right wing and pre-existing regular troops. Meanwhile, the Communists now expected the full restoration of their reputation in the country and the unquestionable legalisation of KKE. However, time passed and those plans were not signed and set into motion by the politicians as promised. On the contrary, the Greek government (and the British allies) demanded the disarmament of the ELAS fighters and most other troops without any sign of fulfilling their previous promise. Suspicions rose once more and ELAS did not comply. Things looked even more bleak when EAM ministers resigned from their position in the National Unity government.
Protests and rallies started taking place. Those were monitored by Greek government soldiers. During the Dekemvrianá (December 1944 events), some soldiers - following orders - opened fire in one of these rallies and killed protesters. There were 28 casualties and 148 wounded. This is the official opening scene of the Civil War.
Now, here's the thing. In its true essence, this initially was not a genuine civil war. This was one of the first "battles" of the Cold War. While the activity of EAM - ELAS was very convenient for the Allied Powers as long as they were fighting off Nazis and fascists, they were promising things to them. But once Greece was effectively liberated, there was an imminent danger that a country with such a leftist momentum and an army 50% made of leftist and communist troops would rapidly pass under the influence of Soviet Russia and Stalin. This is what was discussed in an infamous meeting of Winston Churchill with Joseph Stalin, with the involvement of Franklin Roosevelt. In this unofficial meeting, Churchill ceded most of the western influence in Eastern Europe in exchange with almost complete influence on Greece. See the infamous "percentages" they agreed upon:
Tumblr media
This was of course because the Americans and the British did not want to lose the access to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Greek navy and hand them over to the Russians.
All these led to the tragedies of the Greek civil war, a war that lasted 3-4 years with an estimated 80,000 - 158,000 death toll and huge consequences that left a trauma that has still not been mended in the Greek society. I won't go into the details of it - just some super rough summary. During the Civil War both sides committed atrocities to the extent of their means. The official army and the government were of course financially supported by the British and then the Americans, because after a while even the British could not handle how costly that war was getting. The guerillas had no support, no access to weaponry, finances or medications. They hoped for assistance from Soviet Russia but Stalin was honouring his agreement and did not meddle at all. This made them grow more and more desperate. That's when they turned to Yugoslavia and its communist political leader Tito. Tito opened the borders and provided the Greek guerillas with weaponry and medications. However, it was not exactly or solely out of his good heart. There was pressure applied to the communists that they should in turn assist and "strengthen" the presence of Slavs in Macedonia. Technically, Tito tried to infiltrate Macedonia through this assistance (the Republic of North Macedonia is where south Yugoslavia was). The Greek communists did make some confusing announcements in press, however it was more like desparate throw-away vague statements in order to ensure the continued support by Tito rather than a genuine unanimous agreement to hand over Macedonia to the Slavs, like they were accused by the Greek right wing. The Greek communists revoked soon after the mayhem that was caused. It is also true that there were Slav Macedonians that had joined the Greek guerillas, however even the pro-western Wikipedia page says that their numbers were exaggerated by the Greek right wing in order to defame the communists. In any case, the Communist party did a lot of suicidal things at the time. This is a personal input but in my opinion it didn't help that it was led by Nikos Zahariadis, one of the most confusing political figures in Greece's history. Maybe it is just me but I have never read any relevant historical source, even from a leftist political side, and managed to make sense of what Zahariadis was thinking or doing. Maybe it's just me but it's my humble truth.
Those "defamations" and the consequent defeat in the war have been following Communists ever since. The way the right wing and the left wing have been accusing each other has not changed much - the former are accused of being muppets of the west and the latter are accused of being national traitors or Anthellenes (anti-Greeks). There was a Communist comeback during the Colonel Junta of 1967-1974. At the time their resistance to the regime was notable. However, after the fall of the colonel regime and the Metapolítefsi in 1974 - 1975 (the final change of the political system from a constitutional monarchy to a parliamentary republic) Communism was overtook by Socialism. Nowadays, even claiming there are true political ideologies in Greece is a joke, if you ask me. Of course there are right wing and left wing people, however the existing political parties look at where the wind blows and there is no genuine ideological vision, just corruption and incompetence.
To my understanding, there are two-three large categories of leftist / communists these days. Those of a boomer age or older who are stuck in the old days of KKE and the glory of EAM and are not in touch with current matters, some young people who indeed equate uttering the word "Greece" with being ultra-nationalist (but this new type of leftists has next to nothing in common with the communists of the 20th century, it's more like a rebel type going through a far too long puberty) and leftist people who genuinely envision the best for the country in the way they understand it but they have been receiving all the bad rap from the others. KKE was the fourth party in power in the elections of 2023 but there is another leftist party which is second in power.
And this was the short version of events. I hope I did not hurt or offend anybody with this and if I did, it was not my intention. Forgive any potential inaccuracies in my effort to turn a huge, extremely complex and even more extremely sensitive story into a tumblr answer.

IBM Maximo AWS Deployment Strategies
Tumblr media
The Business Value of IBM Maximo, a recent IDC report that surveyed 9 companies with an average of 8,500 employees, found that adopting IBM Maximo resulted in a business benefit of USD 14.6 million per year per organization, 43% less unplanned downtime, and USD 8.6 million in total equipment cost avoidances.
One comprehensive, cloud-based application platform for asset monitoring, management, predictive maintenance, and reliability planning is IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS). Maximo optimizes performance, extends asset lifecycles, and reduces downtime and costs for high-value assets using AI and analytics. Hosting Maximo on a scalable infrastructure maximizes performance, hence the current tendency is to shift it to the cloud. In this trip, MAS migration and deployment on AWS Cloud are gaining popularity.
The growing demand for Maximo AWS Cloud migration
Migrating to cloud helps enterprises improve operational resilience and dependability while updating software with minimal effort and infrastructure constraints. Due to the growing demand for data-driven asset management, firms must aggregate data from diverse departments to identify trends, generate predictions, and make better asset management decisions.
Last April, IBM said Maximo 7.6 and add-on support would stop in September 2025. All Maximo EAM customers must upgrade to the latest cloud-based MAS. Maximo migration and modernization are become increasingly significant to clients.
IBM has released new containerized versions of Maximo Application Suite as a Service (MAS SaaS) on AWS Marketplace with Bring Your Own License (BYOL) to assist Maximo migration to AWS. MAS SaaS on AWS is another milestone in Maximo’s integration of Monitor, Health, and Visual Inspection into a unified suite.
What makes MAS SaaS distinct
IBM Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) specialists use best practices to continuously maintain and administer MAS SaaS, a subscription-based AWS service. This partnership gives customers an industry-leading IBM asset management system underpinned by AWS’s size, agility, and cost-efficiency.
Upgrades and migrations to MAS 8 are possible with MAS SaaS. The data update is similar to prior upgrades, but ROSA and other dependencies require architecture changes. The migration is comparable to how clients transitioned from on-premise to Maximo EAM SaaS Flex, but with MAS changes. Perpetual on-premises customers would stop paying Service & Support (S&S) and purchase a SaaS subscription, on-premises Subscription License customers would start a new subscription, and existing MAS Flex and MAS Managed Service customers would start a new subscription to migrate to MAS SaaS.
Our IBM Consulting Cloud Accelerator (ICCA) technology lets firms plan migration and upgrade strategies before investing.
Maximo migration strategy of a global energy firm
IBM worked closely with an energy company confronting the following challenges:
Infrastructure needed for latest Maximo version takes longer.
WebSphere, Maximo’s core, experienced high-availability and performance difficulties.
Lack of data fabric and integration layer hinders cross-application data interchange.
Complex setup, failures, and security with manual end-to-end deployment.
Since Maximo Application Suite 8 (MAS8) tackles industry issues like failure risk, escalating maintenance costs, sustainability, and compliance laws, the customer chose it. The client chose AWS Cloud for its deployment flexibility, scalability, high availability, and secure architecture.
Approach to solution
This is how IBM accelerated the energy company’s Maximo move to AWS:
Used Infra as a code to upgrade Maximo from 7.6.0.9 to 7.6.1.2.
IaC allowed instance spin-up for auto scaling. This automation reduces the time to spin up and execute the new environment and addresses multi-AWS availability zone deployment latency.
Used AWS DMS for data migration and schema conversion.
IaC spun the DR environment on demand to reduce database replication (DR) infrastructure and expense. DR capabilities update data in availability zone and DR area.
Achieved data exchange across applications using IBM Cloud Pak for Data and standardized integration using IBM Cloud Pak for Integration components.
Solution components
Maximum Enterprise Application Management (EAM) has a 3-tier design with these components:
HTTP/Web Tier and Application Tier using IBM WebSphere and HIS installed EC2 instance under private subnet for application security.
Database Tier uses AWS Oracle RDS with replication for DR under private subnet.
AWS best practices were used to configure VPC with public and private subnets.
Application servers and deployment manager were autoscaled by Auto Scaling Group.
Maximum web-based UI resolution for external access using AWS Route 53.
WAF was the initial line of defense against web exploits.
Integration of Terraform and CFT IaC scripts provided autoscaling architecture.
AWS Reference Architecture
Max on RedHat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA) helps clients
Containerized MAS 8.0 runs on RedHat OpenShift. AWS, IBM, and RedHat developed an IBM MAS on ROSA reference architecture to help customers inexperienced with production containerization. ROSA, a fully managed, turnkey application platform, supports IBM MAS configuration and offloads cluster lifecycle management to RedHat and AWS, allowing organizations to focus on application deployment and innovation. This means IBM MAS clients don’t need to develop, administer, or maintain RedHat OpenShift clusters.
Operating Model and Maximo Migration
Top 3 Maximo AWS migration accelerators
Clients can migrate to the cloud using three IBM MAS deployment methods on AWS Cloud:
ROSA-powered MAS SaaS on AWS
ROSA-powered AWS MAS
Customer-hosted ROSA
Why use customer-hosted ROSA
The customer-hosted ROSA option for hosting IBM MAS in a customer’s VPC with ROSA is powerful. ROSA is perfect for MAS deployments because it seamlessly deploys, scales, and manages containerized applications.
The benefits of this choice are enormous. Full control over the infrastructure while still subject to the organization’s monitoring, controls, and governance standards allows businesses to customize and adjust the environment to their needs. This control includes adding MAS integrations and enforcing cloud security and governance requirements. ROSA charges are combined into one AWS bill and drawn from any AWS enterprise agreement, simplifying financial management.
AWS enterprise agreements and Compute Savings Plans offer infrastructure savings for MAS implementations. Because the ROSA cluster operates under the customer’s AWS account, customers can buy upfront ROSA contracts and get a one-year or three-year ROSA service charge discount.
Why IBM for Maximo AWS migration?

The Unsung Hero of the Gaming Floor: Understanding Casino MRO
The glittering lights, the rhythmic clatter of chips, the hum of slot machines – these are the sights and sounds that define the casino experience. But behind the scenes, ensuring this intricate machinery operates flawlessly, is a critical function often overlooked: Casino MRO. Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) in a casino environment encompasses everything from the meticulous upkeep of gaming equipment and complex surveillance systems to the general maintenance of the sprawling facilities. It's the silent guardian that keeps the reels spinning, the cards dealing, and the guests comfortable and secure. Without robust MRO, the illusion of seamless entertainment would quickly crumble, impacting revenue, guest satisfaction, and regulatory compliance.
The Scope and Significance of Casino MRO
The sheer variety of assets within a casino presents a unique challenge for MRO teams. Consider the following:
Gaming Equipment: Slot machines, table games (roulette wheels, blackjack tables), shufflers, and coin counters all require regular calibration, cleaning, and repair. A malfunctioning slot machine isn't just an inconvenience; it's a direct loss of potential revenue.
Security and Surveillance Systems: Hundreds, if not thousands, of cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems operate 24/7. Their continuous functionality is paramount for security and regulatory compliance.
HVAC and Environmental Systems: Maintaining optimal temperature and air quality is crucial for guest comfort and the longevity of sensitive electronic equipment.
Food and Beverage Equipment: Commercial kitchens, bars, and restaurants within a casino rely on specialized equipment that requires regular maintenance and prompt repair.
Building Infrastructure: From plumbing and electrical systems to elevators and escalators, the general upkeep of the physical building is a constant undertaking.
The impact of effective Casino MRO extends far beyond mere functionality. It directly influences:
Revenue Generation: Minimized downtime of gaming equipment directly translates to maximized playtime and increased revenue.

Regulatory Compliance: Gaming commissions impose strict regulations regarding the functionality and integrity of gaming equipment and security systems.
Safety and Security: Proactive maintenance of fire suppression systems, emergency exits, and surveillance equipment is vital for the safety of both guests and staff.
Brand Reputation: A smoothly operating, clean, and secure casino reinforces a positive brand image.
Data Points in Casino MRO
The application of data analytics is transforming Casino MRO, moving from reactive repairs to predictive maintenance.
Average Slot Machine Downtime: A major casino operator reported reducing their average slot machine downtime by 15% through the implementation of a predictive maintenance program, leading to an estimated revenue increase of $500,000 per month.
HVAC Energy Savings: One Las Vegas resort achieved a 10% reduction in HVAC energy consumption by optimizing their maintenance schedules and upgrading to more energy-efficient systems, resulting in annual savings of over $1 million.
Preventive Maintenance ROI: Studies suggest that for every dollar invested in preventive maintenance, casinos can save $5 to $8 in reactive repair costs and associated losses.
Wisdom from Industry Leaders
The importance of meticulous operations is echoed by prominent figures, even if their direct quotes aren't always about casino MRO specifically, their principles apply directly:
"The details are not the details. They make the design." - Charles Eames. This sentiment perfectly captures the essence of Casino MRO, where every small detail in maintenance contributes to the overall flawless operation and guest experience.
"Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things." - Peter Drucker. In the context of Casino MRO, this translates to not just fixing things quickly (efficiency) but implementing preventative measures and strategic maintenance plans (effectiveness) to avoid breakdowns in the first place.
"Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of intelligent effort." - John Ruskin. This applies directly to the high standards required in Casino MRO, where consistent, intelligent effort is needed to maintain the sophisticated equipment and luxurious environment.

What factors determine the pricing of IBM Maximo for businesses?
Tumblr media
When considering enterprise asset management (EAM) solutions, one of the most critical aspects for businesses is the cost. A prominent player in this field is IBM Maximo Pricing, a powerful tool designed to optimize the management of assets, maintenance, and operations across various industries. However, understanding what factors determine the pricing of IBM Maximo for businesses is essential to ensuring that it aligns with both budgetary constraints and operational needs.
IBM can vary based on several key factors that influence the overall cost. These factors include the scope of deployment, the number of users, the level of customization, and the specific industry requirements. Additionally, businesses must also consider the type of deployment (on-premise or cloud-based) and the level of integration needed with existing systems. In this article, we will explore these factors in detail to help businesses make informed decisions about the pricing of IBM Maximo.
Factors Influencing the Cost of IBM Maximo for Businesses
1. Scope of Deployment
The size and complexity of the business operations significantly impact the cost of enterprise asset management systems. Larger organizations with more extensive asset management needs, such as multiple locations or diverse asset types, will require a more robust system. This leads to higher costs due to the need for additional modules, more advanced features, and greater system capabilities.
For businesses with limited operations, a more basic version of the system may suffice, reducing the overall price. However, as businesses grow, the demand for scalability increases, often leading to higher pricing tiers for more extensive configurations.
2. Number of Users
Another critical factor in determining pricing is the number of users. Typically, these systems operate on a subscription model, where the cost increases with the number of licenses purchased for users. Businesses must account for both the number of individuals who will actively use the system and those who need access to data, reports, or dashboards.
For example, a small team may only require a handful of licenses, whereas a large organization may need hundreds of users, increasing the overall cost. The more users who need access, the higher the licensing fees will be. For more info, click here
3. Deployment Type: On-Premise vs. Cloud-Based
These asset management solutions offer flexibility in deployment options, which can affect the pricing. Businesses must decide between an on-premise solution or a cloud-based one.
On-Premise Deployment: With on-premise deployment, the software is installed and maintained on the organization’s own servers. This option typically involves a higher upfront cost due to the need for hardware infrastructure, system installation, and maintenance. However, it can be a suitable option for companies with strict data security requirements or those that prefer to manage their IT infrastructure internally.
Cloud-Based Deployment: Cloud-based deployments typically follow a subscription model, where businesses pay a recurring fee based on the number of users or the size of the deployment. The cloud option can be more cost-effective in the short term, as it eliminates the need for hardware and internal infrastructure management. Additionally, cloud deployments often provide easier scalability and integration, but the recurring fees can accumulate over time.
Both deployment options have their advantages and drawbacks, and the decision depends largely on the business’s specific needs, existing IT infrastructure, and long-term strategic goals.
4. Customization and Integration Requirements
The system is highly customizable to suit the unique needs of different industries and business operations. However, customization can significantly impact pricing. Businesses that require specialized features, workflows, or reporting will likely need to invest in customization services, which can add to the cost of the software.
Integration with existing systems, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, inventory management systems, or other business software, can also affect the overall price. The more integrations required, the higher the cost, as it may involve additional technical support, development, and system testing.
Customization and integration services can either be provided by the solution provider or third-party consultants, and the cost varies based on the complexity of the task.
5. Industry-Specific Requirements
Different industries have unique requirements for asset management and maintenance. The solution offers industry-specific functionalities that cater to sectors such as manufacturing, utilities, transportation, and healthcare. These solutions often include specialized features, compliance capabilities, and industry-standard best practices.
For example, the healthcare industry may require enhanced functionality for medical equipment management, while manufacturing businesses might focus more on maintenance scheduling and asset downtime tracking. The more specialized the requirements, the higher the cost, as businesses may need to purchase additional modules or features tailored to their industry.
6. Support and Maintenance Costs
Support and maintenance are essential components of the pricing structure. The solution provider offers different levels of support, from basic technical assistance to premium services that include 24/7 access to a dedicated support team, regular software updates, and enhanced troubleshooting.
The level of support required will influence the overall pricing. Small businesses with fewer operational complexities may opt for basic support, while larger organizations may need comprehensive support contracts to ensure the system runs smoothly and efficiently.
7. Training and User Adoption
For businesses to realize the full potential of the system, proper training is essential. While some basic training may be included in the cost of the software, more in-depth training sessions or ongoing education programs often come at an additional cost. Training expenses can include classroom sessions, online tutorials, and on-site training from the solution provider or third-party trainers.
User adoption can also play a role in pricing, as businesses may need to invest in resources to ensure that their teams are fully equipped to use the system effectively. This can include providing resources for onboarding, continuous education, and process improvement initiatives to maximize the benefits of the solution.
Summary
When evaluating pricing for enterprise asset management systems, businesses must take a comprehensive approach to understand all the factors that contribute to the total cost. By considering the scope of deployment, number of users, deployment type, customization needs, industry-specific requirements, support levels, and training, businesses can tailor their asset management solution to fit their unique needs and budget.
While the initial cost may seem high, the long-term benefits of an optimized asset management system can far outweigh the investment. Such systems provide the tools needed to streamline operations, reduce downtime, and improve asset performance, making them a valuable investment for businesses aiming for operational excellence.

India's Resolute Position on PoK: EAM S. Jaishankar's Kashmir Settlement Vision
Tumblr media
India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently spoke clearly on the Kashmir question during his recent London visit. He made it a point to underscore that the Kashmir dispute is completely solvable with Pakistan's withdrawal from the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), which he called the "stolen" portion of Kashmir. This makes clear India's firm position regarding the territorial integrity of Jammu and Kashmir.
Developments in Jammu and Kashmir After Article 370 Abolition
Since the abolition of Article 370, which accorded special autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian government has taken a number of steps to bring the region closer to the rest of the nation:
Developmental Initiatives: The government has initiated a series of infrastructure developments for the purpose of accelerating economic growth and enhancing connectivity within the region.
Social Justice Initiatives: Attempts have been made to provide different social welfare schemes to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, as long as they get benefits equal to other Indian citizens.
Voting Participation: Elections have been conducted in the area with high turnout of voters, showing the participation of the people in the democratic process.
Jaishankar pointed out these developments as proof of considerable advancement in working on internal concerns of the Kashmir question.
The PoK Factor in Kashmir Solution
Tumblr media
In spite of these developments, Jaishankar reiterated that the Kashmir problem would be completely solved only when Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is handed back to India. He said, "We are waiting for the return of that part of Kashmir, which Pakistan has kept illegally." This view is in line with India's historical claim over PoK and is a testament to the country's determination to establish its territorial claims.
India-China Relations: The Significance of Border Stability
Besides that of Kashmir, Jaishankar also discussed India's relationship with China:
Distinct Dynamics: He said that both nations, both of which have more than a billion people, have a complicated history and are charting their course as aspiring global powers.
Border Peace: Jaishankar stressed that peaceful and stable conditions along the border are important in order to help develop a stable bilateral relationship. He stated, "If the border areas are unstable, it will surely affect our relations."
This reinforces India's position that unsettled tensions along the border can slow down the advancement of bilateral relations.
Strengthening India-UK Relations
During his London trip, Jaishankar had a meeting with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy to confer on the strength of India-UK relations. Their conversation covered:
Tumblr media
Trade Agreements: Looking into options to enhance bilateral trade and investment.
Strategic Cooperation: Defense, security, and counter-terror cooperation on key issues.
Regional Issues: Discussion on geopolitical events in regions such as Ukraine, Bangladesh, and the Middle East.
There was an articulation of mutual desire for reinforcing bonds and concerted efforts towards resolving global challenges.
Global Implications of India's Stance
India's hardline approach towards PoK has a number of international implications:
Diplomatic Relations: India's unequivocal statement of its territorial claims can impact its diplomatic interactions with nations engaged in South Asian affairs.
Counter-Terrorism Efforts: Reasserting claims over PoK emphasizes issues regarding cross-border terrorism emanating from that area, leading to demands for international cooperation to combat the threat.
Regional Stability: A settled Kashmir issue, as India envisions, can result in increased stability and economic growth in South Asia.
Conclusion
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's recent remarks depict India's unyielding attitude towards the settlement of the Kashmir dispute, laying stress on the need to regain Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Combined with continuous development and integration work in Jammu and Kashmir, India seeks a holistic and sustainable solution to the long-standing dispute. Besides, India's attention to developing amicable relationships with the countries bordering it like China and expanding cooperation with influential world powers like the United Kingdom emphasizes its role in building international and regional peace.

discipline, discipline. that was the way, the only way, the van der rohe way. scout was a third generation architect, taking classes in the building that was named after her grandfather, walking through the halls her father built. they only knew one way: brutalist. though it would eventually be changed to modernist, the concrete walls accented with soft wood and wide glass panes. if there is a lesson to learn from such a softening, scout has yet to understand. all she does know is that it changed her from the inside out. a change so gruesome it left her with a scar across her throat and an inability to talk about her mother.
all that rests on her shoulders, and yet she comes across as quiet, collected, and calm. there seems to be nothing that can truly ruffle her, belayed by moments of complete outburst and meltdown. the world caves in when not properly regulated, medicated, or ordered in the particularities that the van der rohe inheritance has aligned. for scout it is an internal violence, something that turns completely inwards and implodes, it finds outlets in ways that people disapprove of. they cannot imagine it might have been external violence, she too does her best to ignore if it might be one day.

scout van der rohe was born to name alone, and alone she would be for her entire life. the only child of elias junior and noemi van der rohe, she was beloved for what she meant to the arts community. her father was a second generation architect, with a firm niche in the world of architecture. and her mother had worked up from pianist to conductor of the toronto symphony orchestra, spending her entire career on the grandest pieces to be brought to stage. only those two could produce a child with a natural predilection for the humanities, a perfect blend of all of the arts. each child was intended to be a genius just the same as their parents. but there was only scout, there was never a second. not even the son which might have carried on a name so beautiful, so crucial. each person had their ideas for why it might have happened, but they didn’t say, not in the presence of the little girl who had to shoulder it regardless of the answer.
what others assumed had to be generational wealth was nothing more than history, pushed along by completed jobs and the naming of another center. her grandfather had famously shirked his salary rather than let his designs be altered, and he demanded the same level of commitment from his son. it left them with a legacy, a loyal following, with nothing more than recognition alongside a handful of other innovators in the field. what was an art exhibition to a month’s rent, who could dictate eternity in dollar amounts. they were about more than that, and she had to be greater than the sum of humanity’s parts. her relationship to this idea, and her grandfather was tense at first. he remained hesitant to see if she had the talent that had been so wrought from nothing in his own lifetime. he had come up from a few buildings in europe to this grand moment, where he looked down at cherubic cheeks and wide eyes, and had to decide if it would be enough. but once she had her grandfather’s blessing and more— far more than she wanted from him, she was let in on the secrets that made them so great.
she remembered the day that her mother woke her to tell her that elias senior had passed, the relief that flooded through her. to know she would not have to spend any more time in his cold home, his sparse drawing room. but her life did not change drastically enough, the path was set for his son, his tiny granddaughter even after he was in the ground. they moved into that cold home, the pine drawing table became her father’s to finish all the creations that needed a brutal touch. their only reprieve was travel. the residencies and the galas, the opening nights and six-month stays in towns that respected art and culture. scout became well-travelled quickly, vying for her own hotel rooms and her privacy in the small towns of germany and italy which requested architects and conductors for their legacies and renown.
her father had always known that there was only one way to keep a roof over his family’s head, no matter how small the project. but more importantly, he knew there was only one way to make sure that the history books never forgot the contributions he and his father made for this great nation. the buildings would stand long after all of them had gone to grave, and he refused to let a single one be unlabelled. here is the bank that elias van der rohe designed, here is the community center that the junior supervised brick by brick. here are the floors made up of bones and blood and sweat and tears. and here was the body, cast in concrete, buried and hidden away for those not clever enough to know where to look. an old trick, passed on from father to son— and eventually to daughter.
she went to college as dictated, a few years where she did not walk the white halls of the family home. she hand sketched each design with pencil and ruler as her grandfather had done for years as she watched, sat on his knee. she graduated with honors and an internship at the one place that she knew she must accept. after all, the company would be hers one day, and there was plenty left to learn that a college degree could not show. her father was sure to teach her quickly what it really took, after all this time there would be no one left to show.
it was lockstep with each design, the need for control, perfection, balance and symmetry. those who were in the way must be adjusted or removed completely. she couldn’t say when she knew that the legacy of a van der rohe was not merely in architecture but in murder. there was suddenly just a day when she saw her father push an intern into a closet for later, and a day when he asked her if she really knew what it meant to inherit the family legacy, all of it, unending in responsibility. of course, one it was there, she could see it everywhere. each sharp edge and unpolished step was made for injury just as much as it was for function. the buildings were built for so much more than she had considered, and so much more than she wanted in this life. she didn’t let the secret go, she held tight to it, but that didn’t mean that fate was done with the knowledge.
the fbi found the first body in the first presbyterian church in new hope pennsylvania, as it was undergoing renovations to make office space. interpol found the last bleeding out on the toronto philharmonic stage. it had seemed for days like the walls were closing in on them all, a tension at the dinner table of performance anxiety, and was in fact much more. her mother had asked her to join her at the dress rehearsal of the latest concerto, a residency that had been years in the making, and finally would come to fruition. and there, elias van der rohe jr. had charged on stage with the knife outstretched and stabbed his wife of twenty years. there he stood in crimson glory before anyone could claim to know what he did or didn’t do, what he wanted with the world writ large.
she wished she could have saved her mother, but she was barely able to save herself. the violence had left her paralyzed, a dawning connection between each and every. her father called her on stage, and she had a fleeting moment of the spotlights her mother so loved, the attention that her father craved. and then the knife was at her neck, her blood covered the stage in a stain that they wouldn’t be able to completely scrub out. even now, after everything, there is a pink tinge under the hottest lights. but she survived somehow, her neck held by an officer who didn’t let go until she was in surgery. she survived, on kindess she couldn’t extend another, on something she didn’t even fully understand.
once she was cleared from physicals and therapy, when she had moved everything to a storage unit, unable to sell what one day might be evidence, she only knew she wanted to get out. she had to. there was some way to step away from this lineage of the brutal, the triaged. with a high profile in art circles, and a lack of funding throughout, she only had a few options to consider. and finally, it seemed possible through the military. who could deny service to the country that had taken them in all those years ago. and the write-off on the degree that would have otherwise taken her years to pay off if she had stepped into something other than her father’s legacy. the army called her a civil engineer and refused anything other than the most practical solutions to their problems. of course, those somehow also ended up being brutal, in the most roundabout of ways. still, service was good for her in as many ways as it was bad. the order, the discipline, keeping her focused on the task at hand and not the bloody past or the stormy future. it came with the nicknames, the jokes, the tasteless photos, and those who wanted to test if she was her father’s daughter.
she’d been in canada when the outbreak hit, sending a ripple so far up the region that it had been it was lucky that santiago was as close has he had been. he’d given her a point man in the sudden chaos. otherwise, scout would have just been a gun and nothing more, a loose cannon of confusion and misdirection. she didn’t even think to try and make it back down to the united states until he set the course. this last drastic shift in her life has left her unsettled, unable to logically think through a daily schedule unless she’s given direction. luckily for her, her family made sure that she had skills which would be indispensable to a world that had crumbled. only she was capable of rebuilding from scraps and the most basic of ingredients. only she could hang on to the last of her sanity with white-knuckled fierceness.
HEADCANONS
in the past had been medicated for anxiety, ocd, and was being monitored for adult-onset schizophrenia at the time of the outbreak. the diagnoses have been more or less ignored, noted as merely eccetricities in greatness. the acceptance of a prescription was nearly tantamount to treason when she’d first brought it up. it’s no matter now, as there isn’t a pharmacy in the last hundred miles that has had what she’s scribbled in her journal.
she was taught piano from a young age, and actually excelled in it more than the maths it took to design buildings. despite this natural predilection, the lessons were dropped from her curriculum when she entered high school so that she could focus on design classes. it also marked the last of the times that her mother and she spent any significant alone time together outside of the philharmonic walls. her path had been chosen for her, and noemi did not fight to break her from it.
speaks french, english, spanish, italian, german, and can read latin. her father’s favorite trip to take was italy, where they could see how long the truly great works of art would last. he made sure that wherever they went, whether for his work or noemi’s, that scout would have manners for their gracious hosts and ask intelligent questions in her youthful way. an accessory more than a daughter on those trips, she still preferred it because then her parents were not looking at her quite so closely.
CONNECTIONS
gray gardner: the two of them don’t know, but they’ve got quite a lot in common including half of their dna. while noemi’s first family was but a brief detour on her path to orchestral success, she did give birth to gray. her parents were quick to annul her marriage and move the baby to a different home before she had a chance to decide for herself. it was only a few years later that she was married to elias, and the rest is history. though, there would forever be the lurking reminder of the son she had given up, the one person in the world who might have understood her little daughter.
santiago diaz munoz: when the outbreak hit in canada, she knew a little about how to survive. but she knew nothing about direction or duration, or how it would even be possible. santiago pulled her from the ruins of the philharmonic building and the two of them made up the foundation of the group that would eventually make its way down to new york. she trusts him with her life, although she’s unsure exactly how long they should be staying in this building.
anora horowitz: she’d always been cautious of romantic relationships. when she was younger, it had been a matter of scheduling. there was no way to keep track of everything that she needed to do (needed to be) if there was love on the line. but once her parents were dead, she’d been searching for something to tether her to this reality. and it turned out anora was looking for something fun to poke at: a serial killer’s daughter in the palm of her hands. needless to say, the relationship didn’t last.

Why Is Abu Dhabi's EAM Setup Crucial for Asset-Heavy Industries?
Tumblr media
Businesses that depend on substantial physical assets, like those in manufacturing, utilities, construction, and oil and gas, need to effectively manage their equipment in order to be competitive in the rapidly changing industrial landscape of today. Establishing Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) in Abu Dhabi is turning into a crucial tactic for these asset-intensive sectors, particularly given the Middle East's quickly expanding economy.
Being a center for infrastructure, energy, and technological advancement, Abu Dhabi offers a special setting where good asset management is not only advantageous but essential. Here are some reasons why asset-intensive industries in Abu Dhabi need a strong EAM system.
Optimizing Asset Lifecycle
Value Businesses that rely significantly on assets make significant investments in facilities, machinery, and infrastructure. An EAM system aids in equipment lifecycle extension, maintenance forecasting, and asset health monitoring. Over time, this results in lower capital expenditures and a higher return on investment. Proper EAM implementation guarantees that nothing is missed in the massive and complicated asset deployment of Abu Dhabi-based businesses.
Cutting Down on Downtime
Costly disruptions result from unforeseen malfunctions. Real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance are made possible by a well-planned EAM configuration, which reduces downtime. Abu Dhabi's industries, especially the utilities and oil & gas sectors, cannot afford equipment failure. Continuous equipment performance and stability are ensured by implementing EAM software with professional consultation, such as Velthrad's Ongoing Consultation services.
Risk management and compliance with regulations
The industrial rules of Abu Dhabi place a strong emphasis on efficiency, safety, and environmental compliance. Monitoring regulatory requirements, conducting audits, and overseeing safety inspections are all made easier with an organized EAM setup. Businesses' legal and reputational risks are reduced, and compliance with national and international standards is guaranteed.
Making Decisions Based on Data
Data is the new gold with the advent of Industry 4.0. Large volumes of asset data are collected and analyzed by EAM systems. Businesses can make well-informed decisions on asset investments, upgrades, and replacements with the help of EAM setup in Abu Dhabi. Businesses have access to intelligent analytics for proactive asset strategy planning when combined with Velthrad's knowledgeable, continuing advice.
Cost Optimization and Budget
Control Unplanned maintenance or ineffective procedures frequently cause budget overruns in asset-heavy organizations. A thorough EAM system facilitates real-time cost tracking, efficient budget planning, and the identification of cost-saving opportunities. In order to remain competitive and lean in a changing industry, Abu Dhabi organizations are increasingly using customized EAM solutions.
Digital Transformation and Scalability
EAM systems provide the foundation for digital transformation as Abu Dhabi develops into a smart industrial city. Future-ready infrastructure is made possible with a scalable EAM system, which includes mobile maintenance solutions and IoT interfaces. EAM is a fundamental instrument for expansion, whether it be through cloud solutions or ERP system integration.
Conclusion
The EAM system in Abu Dhabi is a strategic necessity for asset-heavy enterprises, not merely an operational update. A properly deployed EAM system guarantees operational excellence, cost effectiveness, and long-term sustainability given the region's diverse assets, competitive needs, and regulatory environment.

Numerous businesses worldwide have adopted enterprise asset management solutions to manage assets, equipment, IT systems, and other resources efficiently and effectively, avoid potential hardware or machine failures, cut downtime, and maintain continuous operations. Several companies allowed remote working as part of their efforts to preserve and defend their employees' well-being following the pandemic outbreak, which resulted in a persistent demand for EAM solutions. Due to this factor, demand for enterprise asset management solutions is expected to increase notably in the forecast period.
Organizations across the world are increasingly concerned about data security at the time of implementation of an advanced IT or cloud-based EAM solution. Several manufacturing organizations wanting to improve business efficiency, asset management, and industrial operations believe security and compliance as the main barriers restricting the deployment of EAM solutions. For instance, in October 2022, Oracle launched an asset-based customer service for Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications Package to assist organizations in improving service effectiveness and customer experience.

In the Oil and Gas industry, there has been growing adoption of EAM solutions for various applications such as providing on-shore offshore data replication for real-time asset visibility, service management of oil field equipment, and project management. EAM is used to leverage big data for gaining significant insights from structured and unstructured data. In the Oil and Gas industry, communication and transparency help the supply chain which assists the business in understanding every facet of the extraction and production cycle. Additionally, the growing adoption of EAM solutions in the manufacturing sector boosts the demand of the market. With the emergence of Industry 4.0, maintenance has become a crucial part and companies have started to assess the advanced technologies to assist them go beyond traditional run-to-failure and preventive maintenance approaches. The digitization of asset management and raid development in technologies such as edge devices, SaaS-based tools, and others resulted in a significant increase in the adoption of EAM solutions in oil and gas and other manufacturing industries.
Growing demand for cloud-based EAM solutions
As the on-premise deployment of enterprise asset management solutions involves high capital investment and time, there has been a shift in focus toward the cloud-based deployment of EAM solutions. On-premise mode of implementation requires enterprises to make significant investments in finding the right servers, communication infrastructure, storage devices, and others. Furthermore, it requires skilled professionals in order to maintain the functioning of the system. On the other hand, cloud-based EAM solutions require little hardware which set to drive the market. Additionally, deployment of cloud-based EAM provides more reliability over on-premise mode more reliability with a cloud-based system as manual upgrades and installation of new features aren’t required. It also provides high data security and easy maintenance. These solutions make it easier for enterprises to gain business intelligence and optimize the use and value of enterprise asset management software and solutions, thereby driving the market.
Enterprise Asset Management Market Challenges
Security and Confidentiality Concerns
With the increasing digitization, there has been a significant rise in cyber-attacks. Therefore, data security has become a major challenge in small, medium, and large-sized enterprises. Implementation of new advanced digital technologies has become increasing and making their data vulnerable to risks. There is a substantial rise in cyber-security concerns with the transfer of data or information from the field to the cloud, as malicious ransomware can attack servers, networks, and communication channels, thereby restricting the growth of the market. Many companies are developing digital twin solutions in order to test and build various types of equipment for a virtual environment and predict asset conditions, and unplanned failure. They can reveal elements of Intellectual Property (IP), including details of automation and control systems operations. Therefore, service organizations from highly regulated industries restrict to adoption of modern enterprise asset management solutions, thereby hampering the growth of the market. Additionally, the adoption of cloud-based EAM solutions is an expensive approach. EAM cloud-based solutions can end up costing more than the one-off perpetual license fee expected with an on-premise solution. Subscription costs can add up with cloud-based EAM solutions. When the business expands, cloud-based software grows in capabilities, which results in extra costs. This is the major challenge that hampers the growth of the market. Data security is a major concern across organizations as data loss may cost the company a heavy amount and could reduce the brand image of the organization. Besides, if the implemented solution fails to address any of the parameters, it would impact the daily operations of enterprises and affect their workforce productivity, which may result in further capital loss, which hampers the market.
