On May 17th, 1955, during what was described as a generally lacklustre and even boring general election campaign, ‘the lull before the lull’, Prime Minister Anthony Eden did something dramatic and revolutionary…He went on the telly.

The BBC reported;

"…The Prime Minister, Sir Anthony Eden, has hosted a ground-breaking half-hour television election programme for the Conservative Party, pitting government ministers against newspaper editors in the first broadcast of its kind. Sir Anthony was flanked by four ministers; the Chancellor, Rab Butler, the Foreign Secretary, Harold Macmillan, the Health Minister, Iain Macleod, and the Minister of Labour, Sir Walter Monckton. Facing them were the editors of 10 major national newspapers, armed with questions said to reflect the concerns of the country…"

In a stark indication of how the tone of political debate has since changed, the BBC reported on a ‘challenging’ line of questioning from the editor of The Daily Mirror, Hugh Cudlipp;

"…At one point, he asked the Prime Minister to respond to what he called the common impression that Sir Anthony was ‘less well versed in home than in foreign affairs’. Sir Anthony, with a smile, admitted that it was 'a perfectly fair criticism’, but reminded Mr Cudlipp that his post as Foreign Secretary had led him to sit in Cabinet for 20 years - and the Cabinet, he said, dealt with domestic as well as foreign affairs. Indeed, he added, he had contributed 'more than somewhat’ on domestic affairs…"

Following the televised campaign in 1955, which reached one third of the population, the Conservatives increased their majority from 17 in 1951, to 60, with their manifesto slogan, 'United for Peace and Progress’.

In another indication that politics was slightly different in those days, Eden said this in the House of Commons;

"...The Rt Hon Gentleman, the Leader of the Opposition, and others have been kind in their welcome to me...I can only say to the Rt Hon Gentleman and to the Father of the House, too, that I have been deeply touched by what has been said this afternoon and that, for my part, I will do all I can to serve our country..."

But as much as television might have boosted Eden’s political fortunes in 1955, it helped to drive his demise less than two years later.

"…By the time of the Suez crisis, in 1956, a new line of confrontational questioning by television interviewers such as Robin Day meant Sir Anthony no longer had the freedom of the airwaves to say what he wished unchallenged. As the crisis turned against him, he withdrew from the cameras, appearing just twice in four months. After his resignation in 1957, he said he was convinced that television had contributed to his downfall…"

'Revelation Space' --A Review

I can't remember why I picked this one off the shelf in Foyles when we were visiting the UK back in April. I think I was looking for Iain M. Banks or possibly Ken Macleod-- trying to scratch that British SF Author itch in London seemed the appropriate thing to do at the time. Failing to find either of those authors, I went ahead and selected this one- having heard of Reynolds before, but never actually having read any of his work.

Turns out, I made a really, really good choice.

Set in the year 2551, the first half to two-thirds of the book is centered around three plot strands that gradually merge. The first centers around Dan Sylveste who is an archaeologist excavating the remains of a long-dead alien race, the Amarantin on a planet in the Delta Pavonis system that they call Resurgam. Sylveste is obsessed-- for, nearly a million years before, something destroyed the Amarantin and he has dedicated his life to finding out just what happened to them and caused their destruction Unfortunately, he doesn't much care about people getting in the way of his obsession-- there was a mutiny on the colony and some split to head back to the planet Yellowstone some decades earlier and now it appears Sylveste is on the wrong end of another mutiny and he's taken captive.

The next strand centers on the starship Nostalgia for Infinity (great name!)-- and its crew. Ilya Volyova is searching for a cure for their captain, Brannigan who has been infected with a Melding Plague that attacks human cells and machine implants and twists them into unstable combinations. Right away, you realize that this isn't the Starship Enterprise we're talking about here. The Captain is barely human anymore and has to be gradually warmed so they can communicate. The rest of the crew is in reefer/cryo sleep as they travel the distances between the stars and Volyova needs a new gunner because her current gunner Boris Nagorney has been driven insane by something-- she isn't sure she wants to know what- and she's forced to kill him. The Nostalgia for Infinity feels like a massive, deserted ship, with long, dark corridors and twists and turns and all kinds of surprises to be found-- lots of Nostromo from Alien and Event Horizon vibes with this one.

The final strand centers on the assassin Ana Khouri, who lives on the planet Yellowstone (in Epsilon Eridani) and is hired by a mysterious figure known as the Mademoiselle to assassinate Sylveste. With the assistance of the Mademoiselle, Khouri joins the crew of the Nostalgia for Infinity as the new gunner and they depart Yellowstone to head back to Resurgam to find Sylveste.

(Should be noted: I've never read Altered Carbon books, but I've seen the Netflix series and there are similar vibes here. No warp drive or fancy interstellar travel, so they deal with the effects of time dilation and years pass between point A and point B-- which again, strikes me as very real, very ground in the hardest of sci-fi interstellar travel and the effects it has on people. That aspect of this is really well done, to me.)

Once back at Resurgam, the crew's mission becomes clear. They want to find Sylveste so he can cure the Captain- and eventually, after threatening the colony below, they get him delivered to the ship. Sylveste has other ideas, however: he threatens to trigger the antimatter bombs hidden inside his artificial eyes that could destroy the ship and render him unable to aid the Captain. He wants to go to Cerberus, a nearby planet orbiting a neutron star that he believes holds the answers to the questions has sought for his whole life. Sylveste gets the answers he was seeking: Cerberus is actually a massive beacon, aimed at alerting machine sentience to the emergence of new space-faring cultures so they can be destroyed. That sentience is what destroyed the Amarantin and as the book ends, the characters all think they have done enough to avoid awakening it once more.

Overall: The hardest of science fiction, there is a lot to recommend about this book. First of all, it's incredibly well-written. The crew of the Nostalgia for Infinity isn't one you will forget anytime soon-- the ending, which goes into full-on cosmic/Dave Bowman/Star Child territory is the perfect climax to this big, meaty book. I love that this future is complicated. It's not shiny and pretty and easy-- technology comes with costs to human biology in this world. It's a struggle out there in the cold dark, but people are doing it anyway. I hate getting sucked into trilogies I wasn't planning on reading, but this one has its hooks in me well and good, so I guess it's onto the next two! My Grade: **** out of ****

Tragedy struck when the naval yacht Iolaire struck a reef on approaching Stornoway Harbour in the early hours of New Years Day 1919.

It has been described as the blackest day in the history of the Western Isles when more than 200 servicemen returning from the First World War died as their ship went down in sight of Stornoway harbour. Despite being Britain’s worst maritime disaster since the Titanic, the loss of the Iolaire remains little known beyond the isles.

The disaster occurred at 1.55am on 1st January 1919, when 205 Lewis and Harris men drowned as the HMY Iolaire sank in heavy seas. They had survived the war and were returning home for the New Year celebrations when the ship struck the rocks at Holm, 20 yards from the shore.

A report in the Stornoway Gazette recorded the impact of the tragedy:

No one now alive in Lewis can ever forget the 1st January 1919, and future generations will speak of it as the blackest day in the history of the island, for on it 200 of our bravest and best perished on the very threshold of their homes under the most tragic circumstances.  The terrible disaster at Holm on New Year’s morning has plunged every house and every heart in Lewis into grief unutterable.  Language cannot express the anguish, the desolation, the despair which this awful catastrophe has inflicted.  One thinks of the wide circle of blood relations affected by the loss of even one of the gallant lads, and imagination sees those circles multiplied by the number of the dead, overlapping and overlapping each other till the whole island – every hearth and home it is shrouded in deepest gloom.

Messages of sympathy were received from far and wide, including from the King and Queen and from Lord Leverhulme, who had purchased the island of Lewis the previous year. He also led calls for a disaster fund to be set up and fund raising events were initiated.   The Cinematograph Exhibitors’ Associations of Edinburgh and Glasgow arranged to take collections in all picture houses under their control for a week. A fundraising concert was arranged in the Usher Hall in Edinburgh on 14 February 1919, at which Scott Skinner, the acclaimed  fiddler and composer and many others performed.

A naval inquiry held at the time was not made public until 1970. It had concluded that no blame could be attributed to anybody as the ship’s log had been lost and all of the officers had perished.

The subject of my previous post, Iain Crichton Smith’s penned a poignant poem The Iolaire, about the tragedy, Peter May touched upon the tragedy in hius novel, The Chessmen, part of the Lewis Trilogy.

No other area of the country saw such a high percentage of its young, male, fight and die in the war.

Local man John Finlay Macleod’s actions were crucial in saving 40 lives. Macleod saw the crash from the shore, grabbed a rope, and jumped in the water to set up a rescue line. The other 39 survivors either swam to shore or were rescued from the wreck, meaning that the rescue line was responsible for more than half of the rescues that night.

The pics are of the memorials to this tragedy, the original obelisk dates to 1960 and is joined by a nearby cairn. For the centenary of the sinking, the Outer Hebridean arts institution An Lanntair commissioned a group of artists including Arthur Watson, Marian Levan, and Will Maclean to create an additional sculpture to be incorporated into the memorial. Recognizing John Finlay Macleod, the bronze showcases a coiled rope and was unveiled by Prince Charles in January 2019.

Last Names With Fairy Lore

There are many clans and last names with fairylore, and when I come across them in my research, I try to remember to write them down. The list below are all the names that I have found so far.

Macphee, MacFee, MacFie, MacPhie

According to legend, Macphee, MacFee, MacFie, and MacPhie all came from the name Mac Dhubhshith (dubh-sith), which means “black fairy.”

“A family in North Uist is known as ‘Dubh-sith,’ Black fairy, from a tradition that the family have been familiar with the fairies in their fairy flights and secret migrations.” Carmina Gadelica, Volume 2, by Alexander Carmicheal, [1900],

Munroe’s

Vougha is another name for Kelpies, which a family of Munroe’s are said to come from.

“And it is said that a family of Munroes had, many generations ago, married with the Vougha of Beann na Caltuinn, Their descendants had manes and tails till within the last four generations.” Popular tales of the West Highlands

Pellings

“Pellings” supposedly came from the name “Penelop,” which is a fairy that that is in their bloodline.

 “There are several persons and even families who are reputed to be descended from these people …. These children [Penelope’s] and their descendants, they say, were called Pellings, a word corrupted from their mother’s name, Penelope. The late Thomas Rowlands, Esq., of Caerau, in Anglesey, the father of the late Lady Bulkeley, was a descendant of this lady, if it be true that the name Pellings came from her; and there are still living several opulent and respectable people who are known to have sprung from the Pellings. Macpherson

The black chanter of Clan Chattan was supposedly gifted to a Macpherson by a fairy admirer. Read more about it here.

‘Feadan dubh Chlanna Chatain,’ the black chanter of the Clan Chattan, is said to have been given to a famous Macpherson piper by a fairy woman who loved him." Carmina Gadelica, Volume 2, by Alexander Carmicheal, [1900]

 Mackay

A Mackay was also given something from a fairy sweetheart; though this time it was a flag. Sadly, I can’t find any further information about this flag.

Macleod

The Macleods claim two fairy items, the fairy flag in Dunvegan, and a chanter called “The Silver Chanter of the Fairy Woman.” There is an audio recording from 1969 that mentions the fairy flag here. This is an item you can still go see at Dunvegan Castle.

"The famous fairy flag at Dunvegan is said to have been given to a Macleod of Macleod by a fairy woman. The Mac-Crimmons of Bororaig, the famous pipers of the Macleods of Macleod, had a chanter called ‘Sionnsair airgid na mna sithe,’ the silver chanter of the fairy woman." MacCrimmon

John MacCrimmon was given a chanter by a fairy sweetheart. There is also an audio recording about this from 1954 here, though it is not in English.

"As ‘Iain Og,’ young John MacCrimmon, was practising in ‘Slochd nam piobairean,’ hollow of the pipers, at Bororaig, the lovely fair Thy beauty and the music of thy pipe, Have brought a fairy sweetheart to thee, I hand thee now the silver chanter, That will be melodious ever under thy fingers. MacNamara, O’Sullivan, O’Flaherty, MacKerra, Gossocks, McVeaghs.

O’Flaherty and O’Sullivan families of Kerry, MacNamaras of Clare are all said to be the offspring of mermaids.

MacCodrum

The entire MacCodrum clan of the Outer Hebrides claim to be descendants of a selkie bride.

"…while the entire MacCodrum clan of the Outer Hebrides, known as “The MacCodrums of the Seals.” claimed to be the offspring of a union between a selkie and a fisherman. In this case, the sign of preternatural parentage was not delicate beauty but an hereditary horny growth between the fingers that made MacCodrum hands resemble flippers." Urqhart

A family of Urqharts are also descendants of selkies.

"...the Folk-Lore Society, in 1895, studied magic lantern slides taken of Baubi Urqhart of the Shetland Islands. On the basis of family stories and a seallike appearance, Baubi claimed to be the great-great-granddaughter of a selkie captured by her ancestor." Mor

The Mor’s can never be drown thanks to a promise made with a mermaid

"They acquired this immunity through the foresight of their father, James Mor, who in 1883 was still living to tell the tale’. He found a mermaid’s belt, and withheld it until she promised that none of his family should ever be drowned." Sea enchantress; the tale of the mermaid and her kin by Benwell, Gwen (1961)

As well as that, a Dòmhnall Mòr was constantly lifted by the fairies

MacVurichs

MacVurichs of Uist have something to do with the supernatural, but the recording is in gaelic and I can’t understand it.

 MacArthur

According to this recording from 1969 there is a certain place that no MacArthur should pass by. Why? Well, according to the story, Neil MacArthur was on his way home when he saw a woman he thought he knew. He put his arms around her, only to realize she had no nostrils (a washerwoman description). He was compelled by her magic to meet with her over six months, and would have died on his last visit, but his mother-in-law placed protective charms on him.

"The woman put a curse on Neil’s descendants. She said that evil would happen to them if they passed a certain place after sunset. The contributor says that the MacArthurs heed this warning to the present day [1969]" AN ENCOUNTER WITH A FAIRY WASHERWOMAN

Laings

The Laings are supernaturally good workers because one of their ansestors was trapped in a fairy mound. While there, she was forced to bake until a fairy helped her escape. She left with the new ability.

Widwick

After helping deliver a baby she did not at the time know was a fairy, a midwife in Yell named Merran Widwick accidently got fairy oinment in her eye (giving her the ability of second sight) and was blinded in that eye. Audio recording here, and another here.

Merran Windwick, only recently deceased [in 1972], was a great midwife and healer who lived in a remote area of North Yell near high banks [cliffs]. One night she returned home late and was sitting down to her supper when there was a tap at the door. Her sickly daughter answered it to a strange man. Merran cursed the people who were annoying her so late, but the man said that he lived not far from her and persuaded her to come to help his wife, who was having a child. He took her to the clifftop and made the stone rise to reveal a staircase. She went into the fairy dwelling and delivered the child. The fairy had no money to pay her, but instead offered her long life or knowledge beyond all understanding. She chose knowledge and from then on knew everything that was to pass. Years later she went to a roup [public auction] to sell a cow and saw the stranger again. He asked her which eye she saw him with. She told him and he blew in the eye; she lost her sight in that eye. link

 Coutts

The grandfather of Maalie Coutts lived in Mid Yell found a fairy child (of a trow) and took it home, but had to release it when it threatened to blow down the house with wind.

The fairy host used to lift Niall Sgrob and they once asked him to kill a girl.

They used to take Niall Sgrob from Barra with them. He would get a feeling when they were coming and he had to go with them. One night a girl was milking at a house which Niall often visited. The cow she was milking dropped dead. The next night Niall Sgrob said he had killed the cow. The fairy host had asked him to kill the girl with a fairy needle. He killed the cow instead. The host saw the blood and thought the girl was dead. He told them they should always shut the door when milking. link

Buidhe

A Buidhe went into a fairy hill, and was trapped there for seven years until another human rescued him.

"Greusaiche Buidhe went to get whisky for a wedding and went into a fairy hill. He was there for seven years, until another man rescued him. He thought he had only been there a short while." link

Coronation Street star Helen Worth to bid farewell to the cobbles after 50 years

The actress, 73, will bid farewell to the cobbles at the end of the year after she celebrates her golden anniversary next month. She will leave the show following a “major storyline for the Platt family”, which she is due to start filming next month. Helen Worth has worked on Coronation Street for 50 years (Ian West/PA) Worth said: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. “I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding. “I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. “The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.” Having joined the cobbles in July 1974, Worth’s character has been a prominent figure in a number of explosive storylines gripping the soap over the years. Her ill-fated love life has come to define the character, having suffered an affair and the deaths of four of her five husbands. • March 27 2024 - It's announced that Kate Brooks will be Corrie's new Producer, leaving Laura Shaw as the remaining Producer for Emmerdale, Brooks snd Shaw will both work under MacLeod

• Even though some say Kate Brooks actually left Emmerdale a while ago, as of the April 5 episode, both she and Laura Shaw are still listed as Producers in the credits, while Iain is still not listed

A press event soon would be great, as the 10000th episode is coming up in June (I think) and they always plan some big story for summer anyway. I'm interested to see if certain stories will be changed or dropped all together and if we will be seeing more character exits.
