another relationship PSA advice post:

okay so i know that i’ve already made a big post about this... but i just had a flashback to when that weird chick at public school was trying to set me up with men in their late 20s/early 30s back in 2012 when we were LITERALLY 16.

like one of the excuses i used back then to deflect this girl’s constant pressure of talking to those men was “uh, *zara*.... my drama teacher at catholic school literally turned fucking 30 last year (or back in 2010) and my whole drama class called him old as fuck! so these men are the same age as my drama teacher from catholic school!!!! how the FUCK is that okay and NOT creepy???? they’re LITERALLY OLD ENOUGH TO BE OUR BLOODY TEACHERS AND WOULD BE FUCKING ARRESTED FOR DOING ANYTHING TO US IF THEY WERE????!!!! PLEASE! GET! IT! THROUGH! YOUR! HEAD! THAT! THIS! ISN’T! FUCKING! NORMAL!!!!”

but she obvs deflected the above with: “but we’re old enough to and are legal to fuck, so just fuck them and it’ll be ok!!!! just suck it up and do it!!!” like i just wanna say to my younger followers that:

if anyone your age pulls you into this sort of totally fucked up situation, and just refers to sex by saying “just fuck them” or as just as “fucking” without realising that sex is actually FAR MORE than that... then they don’t care about your safety and boundaries AT ALL, and you should dump that friend, STAT.

after all, if they were really your friend, they would care about your safety and understand your refusals/rejections towards the men. they would also care about your bodily autonomy and boundaries and understand that you’re not comfortable with this situation.... and so, stop harassing you to flirt and sleep with these men.... which literally NO TEENAGER in their right fucking mind should be fucking comfortable with a man who is basically twice their fucking age (and old enough to be their goddamned teacher) flirting with them and wanting to sleep with them.

finally, NO NORMAL dude in their late 20s/early 30s should be finding a 16 YEAR OLD GIRL ATTRACTIVE. FUCKING PERIOD. after all, these men ARE FULLY AWARE that you are a kid. but they don’t actually care. and that’s because they’re looking for someone to manipulate and abuse/harass etc. because no woman their age will put up with their, more than likely, manchild bullshit behaviour. but a 16 year old girl, according to these men, will presumably put up with it, because teen girls don’t know anything about relationships and sex and life, but they (the men) obviously do. they’ll use that excuse so that then you’ll presumably follow EVERYTHING that they say and want you to do. and the friend that’s pulling you into this sitch is doing the same thing, by being complicit in the same grooming behaviours of those men.

JUST RUN FOR YOUR MOTHERFUCKING LIFE (if it’s safe to). report it if it’s safe to as well. please. because it’s not worth your safety and sanity dealing with either the fucked up friend who thinks men twice your age will apparently “keep you safe”/“look after you” (when they’re obviously fucking not!!!) if you “just fuck them”.... or dealing with the creepy adult men who SHOULDN’T BE FUCKING FLIRTING WITH A GODDAMNED CHILD IN THE FIRST MOTHERFUCKING PLACE ANYWAY.

in short, the real safety in this situation is caring enough about yourself to firmly set your boundaries and standards, which will allow you to block these people out of your life. listen to yourself. if it feels wrong (which for a good bulk of teenagers, it will feel really fucked up), let the friend know. call the friend out and these men out on their behaviour if you feel safe and confident enough in doing so.

if they actually take the time to listen and consider, the friend should realise that they’re wrong and stop.... and in general most decent & normal adult men should stop as soon as you say you’re a teenager and hopefully stop harassing you. if neither happens, just straight up block the men on social media like facebook or snapchat (which was where this girl was adding them for me) and just stand your ground with your friend if they don’t listen.... and report them if you feel like you can. then block them on social media too.

but if you get stuck in this situation and feel like you can’t get out of it, reach out for help to someone else that you can actually trust, like another friend that you’re actually closer with or something (like this girl I wasn’t actually close with at all) hopefully they’ll help you out and get you out of this fucked up sitch.

but don’t hate yourself if you’re stuck with the weird friend or unfortunately stuck in a relationship with one of those sickening men. because i easily could’ve been too, after all of their creepy “you’re so mature for your age 😊😊” etc comments. and it was all because i was young, insecure, naive and desperate for any kind of positive comments/feedback/attention because i’d never received any from any guys in my age group. you may feel the same. but DON’T FALL FOR IT. or don’t hate yourself if you do fall for those comments, because it is very, very easy to when you feel lonely and whatever in your teens. because, sadly, this is EXACTLY WHAT these men are latching onto. they are latching onto your low self image/esteem and giving you the attention that you want by giving you those seemingly nice compliments. they know that’s what you want: someone that’s ready to shower you in compliments. but once you get into a relationship with them, those “compliments” are probably likely to stop... as they’ll try to use the age gap against you, like i said earlier.

basically at this point, i’d come out of a year-long depressive episode/mental breakdown, so i was trying to build myself up again to be confident and everything.... and that’s why i became so suspicious of these men suddenly giving me those creepy comments/so-called “compliments” and my friend trying to set me up with them so forcefully. but yeah. again, DON’T HATE YOURSELF FOR FALLING INTO THIS IF ANYTHING HAPPENS, because it’s so, so easy, at that age, and in that state, to feel that you need love from anyone or anything. but please remember to set your boundaries and standards and stick to them before anything DOES happen. because you are WORTH your boundaries and standards and safety, despite what these people (as well as your depression or low self-esteem/image) tell you.

anyway, JUST BE SAFE OUT THERE Y’ALL.

this also falls under the whole “hoe phase” body positivity thing. like if you’re 17-19 and some friend is like “be a hoe with that dude in his late 20s/early 30s that keeps hitting on you on *insert chosen dating app here*”..... i again suggest to run from or ignore that guy and to ignore/leave that friend. because if there’s a 10+ year age gap between you and the guy/other person, there could/can be a BIG disparity (well i think there will be idk) in how the guy/other person will treat you....

like obviously it’ll depend on how decent the other person is generally.... but again, if they can’t pull someone their own age, but pull an 17-19yo instead, when they’re like 26-33 or whatever, then you’ve got some serious questioning to do towards that person, to yourself. like my questioning of the men on this hellsite, in this age bracket, that i had hitting on me at 17/18 on me, was: “but they pay bills/rent/a mortgage and shit.... like I DON’T EVEN FUCKING KNOW WHAT ANY OF THOSE ARE!!!??? why the FUCK are they even bothering with hitting on me when they’re adults that i’ve actually told that i’m still in high school????” and that was substantial enough to turn me off them tbh lmao. but yeah. just STAY SAFE in your hoe phases/sex discovery phases y’all.

How do i overcome my insecurities?

Hello,

Thank you for writing to Asking Jude. First, I want to say that overcoming one’s insecurities is not an easy feat! If or when insecurities “raise their ugly head” in our youth and they are not dealt with- they will carry into our adulthood. As I mature woman, I can truly say one can overcome their insecurities with confidence, patience, perseverance, tenacity, and positive self-talk. Even the most confident and outspoken personhave some things about themselves they are not completely happy or satisified with. It is completely natural to sometimes doubt the choices we have made, regtret the things we have said, or want to improve ourselves in some area or another. Overcoming self-doubts is a major part of growning up as we mature into adults. While insecurities do affect the young in their teen years, they can manifest themselves differently with age depending on varying intensity dependent upon one’s strength of character and their environment.

According to those from the psychology school of thought, the following 6-Step process can be used to help you work through your insecurities. These are progressive steps, thus it is important to go through each one fully before moving onto the next step. It is highly suggested you first need to commit yourself to the process. Moreover, you need to commit to putting in time and effort into this process, as well. This is the only way you will reap the rewards of seeing the results in your life. Please know this: Securing your insecurities is very important to everyone at any age of awareness! Check out the following steps:

Step 1: Identify Your Insecurities - The first step is all about awareness. You need to ID the insecurites you struggle with. Uncover irrational beliefs and unhealthy thoughts at the coare of your insecurities. Ask yourself the following questions:

- What do I tend to feel insecure about?

- What uncertainty exist that is making me feel insecure?

- What worries or fears are make me feel insecure?

- Why am I feeling insecuare aobut these things?

- What is the root cause of all these insecurities?

Step 2 - Practice Being Objective - It’s time to now challenge your insecurities. They are nothing more than your interperations you have created for yourself, others, circumstances, or about what will or will not happen. They are opinions and perspectives you have latched onto. In order to change these perspectives, they need to be challenged by you. You will need to think about them rationally by asking yourself the following questions:

- Is this really how things are or just how I imagine them to be?

- How could things be different to the way I imagine them to be?

- Are my expectations realistic in this particular situation?

- How else could I view or interpret this situation?

Step 3 - Reflect on Your Successes - Take a moment to reflect on your successes and accomplishments (large or small). Think about all you have done and achieved. If you have faced a challenge, think about how you can overcome it or how you overcame it. Think about the inner strenghts you had to call upon or need to create for the next time the problem arises again. Then, you ask yourself:

- What have I excelled at in the past?

- Why have I excelled at these things?

- What personal attributes were of value at the time?

- How could I bring that mindset to this or any other situation?

Step 4 - Assess Your Circumstances- By using your higher level of self-confidence, you can now evaluate your circumstances. Upon feeling insecure about something, we convince ourselves (and see them) as going a certain way. We tend to dwell on the worst case scenario that forces us to retreat back into the safety of our own comfort zone. One cannot be proactive when one is filled with uncertainty because uncertainty freezes you making it difficult to move forward. What you need now is Certainty, thus ask yourself:

- What is the worst could possibly happen if I take action despite my insecurities?

- So what? Who cares? Things may not be as bad as I make them out to be.

- How could I possibly turn a horrible experience into an opportunity for something better?

- What is the best thing could happen if I act to move beyond my insecurities?

Step 5: Engage in Positive Self-Talk - Now it is time to prime your body/mind into action! The best way to do this is to give yourself some positive self-talk. For example, repeat the following to yourself:

- I am confident and a capable person!

- I believe I can do this!

- I will take 1 small action to get the all rolling!

- I will learn from my mistakes & keep it moving forward without hesitation! The longer you take to decide whether to take action or not, the more doubts will creep up and raise its ugly head making you feel more insecure.

Step 6 - Making a Commitment - Commit to overcoming your insecurities, which is not just done or said in your head. You make it become a part of your life. Overcoming one’s insecurities is about breaking from old habits and patterns of behavior. In turn, you replace them with empowering habits, daily rituals, and routines which support your positive goals and objectives. Also at the same time, you nuture a new set of beliefs that align with those positive habits. Eventually, you will acquire the mental strength and force to overcome your insecurities.

Everything is subjective (based on personal feelings, taste or opinions). We interpret things based on our own past experiences, beliefs, values, and expectations. The guiding force is not what happens to us, but rather how we interpret each experience we encounter. So, secure your insecurities in life and know that you are the strongest advocate when it comes to making positive changes in our life. I hope this helps.

bruh moesha made 30 seem hella old. im freaking 29, im definitely not old.

do all 30 year olds feel this? is this fucking cliche? is this what being a millenial feels like?

freaking. andell seems like she should be at least 45 shes had a business forever, she looks oldish, hella independent with ehr own moneey, yeah she keeps getting played by her lover but the d is probably great and she doesn’t need “love” bc she’s not dependent on it for basic necessities. but she needs love so she has hope. she’s woke but understanding when someone who doesn’t understand yet. she supports the kids but says it like it is. i can def see some bits of myself in her but bruh, at least 35? bc im 29 and 1 im not as independent, and 2, im def not as old.

but i also kind of get how shes a 30 year old but do 30 year olds get the respect of older people? does andell get respect from older people? idk man tv makes teens look like 20-something and 30 eyar olds look like my mom. dee hangs with andell, she’s def not 30. but then again we hang with older people, no?

are 30 year olds friends-ish with teens and like older folks all at once a millenial thing? i mean i def have older friends bc of work, and hang with my siblings who are a generation older and as a teacher i talk to kids who are teens but i wouldn’t be friends with them? unless you consider my nieces and nephews, and some much younger coworkers.

but if im “superior” to them in some way im basically a mentor and ugh. maybe andell is 30.

that same moesha episode has gotten me thinking about highschool. and what a fucking shitfest it was. i mean, why the hell was i so pressed instead of just being a fucking kid? like, i def ended up where i wanted to and realized it sucked even more (college), esp the way i did it initially, but once i got over the fucking ivory tower and american dream bc i reallized it was never made to include me to a certain extent (the whole identity crisis over foreclosure of identity from the every day--being unwanted by the same thing interpellating its allegiance to you, how all that crap felt of being a --insert almost every pressed identity grouping here-- at a fucking --insert ever agrandized fucking included, repressive identity force here--insitution. high school wasn’t bougie enough i think. like everyone was like closer to the ground class wise so maybe it didnt feel like a big enough ocean yet. a friend told me post highschool or maybe at graduation that im going to be the big fish in the little pond trying to swim in the ocean or some quote like that. fucking i was, if not socially which i honestly didnt even try and fucking got ostracized from anyway, def on top academically and fucking TEACHERS were trying to push me down but like i still got to exactly where i wanted to go. and i fucking had a wonderful time there. got kicked out but became a whole ass human being who found so many homes with people and so many loving arms and caring friends and fucking insane moments and memories and fucking became who i am today--a fucking cool as andell like adult with a full and complete social life if not financial or career life like im ok dude. ive accomplished enough even if capitalist might make me feel like i havent accomplished anything. much like the racist ass teachers made me feel and the racist ass kids made me feel about being smart in a fucking shitfest and where the other brown kids were just in competition with me. i had no friends. i lie, i had a few. and i had the respect of a few. and i guess that makes like maybe a dozen people--hold on let me count, i think 9 people, that im cool with from high school, 3 who are close to me, 1 who fucking hates me post-college life and would try to talk shit or ruin me maybe but i miss her and we were fucking close at some point. and then a bunch of people who probably dont give a shit no longer bc we’re all adults who need to move on with our lives. i hope theyre not petty and hate me just bc of high school.

i wonder if any respect me now lol. aside from those i know, do any of them like feel bad kind of for not being a better person to me? maybe i was a bitch too though. but thats only bc i was lowkey power hungry and just wanted to get into fucking the college of my dreams and had been fed that academic success led to fianncial success and overall joy de vivre or however oyu fucking spell it.

id still be down to be friends with whoever wants but dont have the time or energy to deal with the pettiness. i think this year was supposed to be our 10 yr reunion and idk if theyll do it bc of covid or not but fucking would i even wanna go? im still so traumatized from it idk if id wanna be judged that hard again.

fucking, i wish i was chiller back then. had realized i could be creative and look good and be more confident if i wanted to. but i guess i wouldnt be who i am had that shit not happened but i also suffer from extreme anxiety adn depression now so like maybe, people could ease up on the judgement and hatred and constant barriers and shit talking and like, lowkey bullying down a notch. these white and white washed brown kids had me fucked up.

i wish i had just like, been able to chill and be accepted a little more. but i wish the people who were chill with me couldve been more comfortable or confident in being who they were.

i remember ending freshman year, confident that i would have friends at the end of high school sitting between the coolest and queerest two people i could imagine showing off my hot pink ipod 3G or whatever. and then hanging out in the city with a few people on the last day. i dont even remember what we did. maybe olive garden in times square? it was def times square. the big toys r us in the city with the dance dance revolution. who the fuck were the people with us? was that even freshman year or is that a memory from some other time? i dotn fucking remember much of the good times in high school anymore. more shitty times.

but fucking, if people had been loyal would i have been a diff person? def s j and j and then later n but w during the first year and d all hugn out with me in college. and made freshman year bareable and some sitll continue to make life bareable and for me to feel loved in this day adn age adn i know the freindshipsare genuine now but i wonder if id have more people from high school as my friends just bc i fucking get attached to people bc of the whole empathy thing and like we knew eachother for good chunks of our lives, we should keep up with eachother and make sure we’re ok. but also like, did we even show care back then?

i wish id lived the teen life a little more though. like my husband did. like so many of my more normal than me feeling friends did but i wonder how many of my college friends actually liked their high school years lmao.

Dedication

This one goes out to all my teen librarians.

I saw a question/declaration come up twice in the last week. Once in person, once online. So, I thought I’d share where I’m coming from.

When it comes to teenagers in the library, a question libraries often wrestle with is whether or not it’s good to have a dedicated space for teens. Meaning an area for use exclusively by teens, usually closed off from the rest of the library in some way.

This is an issue of EXTREME passion for some folks, and I totally get it. I’ll be as fair as I can.

Arguments In Favor:

1. Many Teens Don’t Have A Space Dedicated To Them At Home Or Elsewhere:

I know this isn’t exclusive to teens, but it’s true. Lots of teens might not have room at home they could call their own.

2. It Can Give Teens A Sense Of Belonging In The Library

I might go so far as to say ownership.

3. It’s Hard To Get Teens In The Library

There are probably a ton of librarians out there saying, “I don’t struggle with this at all.” Well, bully for you. Teens, especially older ones, are a group that we don’t always see a lot of. If a dedicated space brings them in, I can think of much worse uses of a space.

And thus ends my arguments in favor. I think they’re very typical, and I don’t want to undervalue them.

Arguments Against:

1. The Problem of Dedicated Use

I want to take away, for a moment, from the idea of a teen space and talk about spaces dedicated to an audience.

There are some problems inherent in saying that a given space is for the exclusive use of one group. I want to talk about this from a practical standpoint, less so a “this is ageism” standpoint. It totally is, because where is the dedicated space for seniors? But that’s not the big problem I have with it.

Let’s say you did have a space dedicated to senior citizens. You decided to revolutionize the library. After all, baby boomers are aging, and they certainly represent a core audience of users. So you put out some sweet recliners, a big-ass jigsaw puzzle...you know what? Forget the seniors. This is where I want to hang out.

Anyway, you have the space.

This creates a couple problems.

First, how will you regulate the use? You will need an employee dedicated to that space whenever it’s available, checking that no whippersnappers are making their way into the senior area to use the space or resources you might have inside.

You will also need to empower that employee to make decisions. It’s probably not reasonable to force adults to show an ID. If we can flip back to teenagers for a second, are you going to question someone who looks 12? Because I looked 12 until I was about 18, and I was a little sensitive to that fact. So, if I was hassled about entering a space that was supposedly for me, reminded yet again that I was a little behind developmentally, I don’t think I’d head back there soon.

Whatever is decided needs to be consistent and manageable.

Regulating use is a problem, and here’s the flipside: Do you then force seniors to use the senior space? Let’s say a senior is occupying a computer outside the senior space. A 20-something comes along and says, “Hey, the computers are full. I notice there’s a senior citizen using one, and that dude could totally use a computer in the senior zone, which are unoccupied.” This person is making a valid point.

2. Collections

In most of this I try to be fair, however I think having the teen collection in the dedicated teen space is a big problem.

I visited a library set up like this once. I get it. If you have a space for teens, there should be stuff for them in there. But I wanted to check out their comics, and I couldn’t. I mean, I COULD. They had some signage indicating that it was okay to pop in for the sake of materials. But I didn’t think it was worth it. Especially as an older man.

Sidebar:

The comfort level going into a teen space like that is different for an adult man than an adult woman. An adult man who is around teens is suspicious to most people. You might be disagreeing right now, and if you are, I’m betting you’re an adult woman. Some of my female colleagues have done things I would NEVER do, such as giving rides on the sly. I would sooner call a taxi and pay for it to get a teen home than give a ride myself. I don’t say that as a bad thing, I say that as a show of the fact that things are just a bit different. We work in a female-dominated industry, and the comfort level of the world at large when it comes to adult men being around teens is probably a blind spot for many of us. I’m putting it out there, I think adult male patrons are even less likely to get a material from the teen area than an adult female patron.

End sidebar.

There are lots of issues. Will an adult reader of teen fiction be ashamed they’re reading teen fiction and be hesitant to ask to access it? Will an adult reader put stuff on hold and miss out on browsing opportunity? Will a young child who reads above their level (in terms of grade level or interest maturity) have a barrier between them and the stuff that’s suited to their needs/interests?

Point being, if you are going with a dedicated teen space, I would strongly encourage you to keep the majority of materials outside. Curate some stuff, bring it in, have it on display and accessible, but the collection needs to be for everyone.

3. Practical Concerns

We talked a lot about whether we wanted a dedicated, closed teen space when we did a renovation years ago. We decided against it. The main reason is that during most of our open hours, there are very few, if any, teens in the building. From 9-4 on weekdays, it’s highly unlikely you’ll see teens hanging around. We also don’t have a big audience on weekends. Mostly it’s an afterschool crowd.

What could we do to create a space that works during the majority of our open hours?

What we did was to create a teen space that’s not exclusive, but it encourages use by teens through furniture styles, appearance, and proximity to relevant collections. Also, when we receive complaints about the noise level in the area, we gently remind the non-teen users that this is a teen area, it’s busier after school, and might we try and move them to an area that’s less active?

In other words, we HAVE a teen space, but it’s regulated by being pro-teen rather than anti-adult. Which means that it is useful during times when teens can’t/won’t use the library.

4. Space or Warehouse

I’ve worked for people (and you probably have too) who totally want a teen space, but for all the wrong reasons. They don’t really like teens all that much, and for them, warehousing them somewhere separate is the ideal situation.

I think it’s a good, healthy thing for teens and adults to learn how to coexist in a space. Rather than forcing them apart, I think it’s good for teens and adults to interact without a referee present. One is available if things get out of hand, but isn’t necessarily monitoring the area at all times.

I don’t think this to the extent that I condemn teen spaces or think they’re a terrible idea. For lots of setups, and depending on the audiences you see in your library and the issues you’re facing, it might be a great solution. You might have surplus space. Maybe your library has a space that works really well for this purpose.

What I am saying is that you shouldn’t beat yourself up for not having an exclusive teen space or perhaps not even wanting one. Because there’s something to be said for not having one, and you never know. Maybe working around it will serve you better in the end.
