Earth Engine in BigQuery: A New Geospatial SQL Analytics
Tumblr media
BigQuery Earth Engine
With Earth Engine directly integrated into BigQuery, Google Cloud has expanded its geographic analytics capabilities. Incorporating powerful raster analytics into BigQuery, this new solution from Google Cloud Next '25 lets SQL users analyse satellite imagery-derived geographical data.
Google Cloud customers prefer BigQueryfor storing and accessing vector data, which represents buildings and boundaries as points, lines, or polygons. Earth Engine in BigQuery is suggested for processing and storing raster data like satellite imagery, which encodes geographic information as a grid of pixels with temperature, height, and land cover values.
“Earth Engine in BigQuery” mixes vector and raster analytics. This integration could improve access to advanced raster analysis and help solve real-world business problems.
Key features driving this integration:
BigQuery's new geography function is ST_RegionStats. This program extracts statistics from raster data inside geographic borders, similar to Earth Engine's reduceRegion function. Use an Earth Engine-accessible raster picture and a geographic region (vector data) to calculate mean, min, max, total, or count for pixels that traverse the geography.
BigQuery Sharing, formerly Analytics Hub, now offers Earth Engine in BigQuery datasets. This makes it easy to find data and access more datasets, many of which are ready for processing to obtain statistics for a region of interest. These datasets may include risk prediction, elevation, or emissions. Raster analytics with this new feature usually has five steps:
Find vector data representing interest areas in a BigQuery table.
In BigQuery image assets, Cloud GeoTiff, or BigQuery Sharing, locate a raster dataset that was created using Earth Engine.
Use ST_RegionStats() with the raster ID, vector geometries, and optional band name to aggregate intersecting data.
To understand, look at ST_RegionStats() output.
Use BigQuery Geo Viz to map analysis results.
This integration enables data-driven decision-making in sustainability and geographic application cases:
Climate, physical risk, and disaster response: Using drought, wildfire, and flood data in transportation, infrastructure, and urban design. For instance, using the Wildfire hazard to Communities dataset to assess wildfire risk or the Global River Flood Hazard dataset to estimate flood risk.
Assessing land-use, elevation, and cover for agricultural evaluations and supply chain management. This includes using JRC Global Forest Cover datasets or Forest Data Partnership maps to determine if commodities are grown in non-deforested areas.
Methane emissions monitoring: MethaneSAT L4 Area Sources data can identify methane emission hotspots from minor, distributed sources in oil and gas basins to enhance mitigation efforts.
Custom use cases: Supporting Earth Engine raster dataset imports into BigQuery image assets or Cloud Storage GeoTiffs.
BigQuery Sharing contains ST_RegionStats()'s raster data sources, where the assets.image.href column normally holds the raster ID for each image table. Cloud Storage GeoTIFFs in the US or US-central1 regions can be used with URIs. Earth Engine image asset locations like ‘ee://IMAGE_PATH’ are supported in BigQuery.
ST_RegionStats()'s include option lets users adjust computations by assigning pixel weights (0–1), with 0 representing missing data. Unless otherwise specified, pixels are weighted by geometry position. Raster pixel size, or scale, affects calculation and output. Changing scale (e.g., using options => JSON ‘{“scale”: 1000}’) can reduce query runtime and cost for prototyping, but it may impact results and should not be used for production analysis.
ST_RegionStats() is charged individually under BigQuery Services since Earth Engine calculates. Costs depend on input rows, raster picture quality, input geography size and complexity, crossing pixels, image projection, and formula usage. Earth Engine quotas in BigQuery slot time utilisation can be changed to control expenses.
Currently, ST_RegionStats() queries must be run in the US, us-central1, or us-central2.
This big improvement in Google Cloud's geospatial analytics provides advanced raster capabilities and improves sustainability and other data-driven decision-making.

New ferroelectric device performs in memory calculations and could boost energy efficiency for edge computing
Tumblr media
- By Nuadox Crew -
A new study in Nature Communications introduces a device called an in-memory ferroelectric differentiator that can do calculations right inside the memory itself.
This means it doesn’t need a separate processor, which saves a lot of energy—especially useful for devices like smartphones, self-driving cars, and security cameras.
Most computers today use a design where memory and processors are separate. This setup wastes energy and slows things down because data constantly has to move back and forth. The researchers solved this by using ferroelectric materials, which can store data even when the power is off and create electric signals when their internal structure changes.
They built a tiny 40×40 grid made up of 1,600 of these materials, which lets the device act as both memory and processor. It can handle tasks like motion detection and video analysis directly in memory, without needing extra steps.
This device is also extremely energy-efficient, using just 0.24 femtojoules per calculation—up to a million times more efficient than today’s CPUs or GPUs.
Since it works with current chip technology and can be scaled up, it could lead to big improvements in edge computing and real-time tasks like processing medical signals or even solving math problems directly in hardware.

WHAT IS A PIVOT TABLE AND WHAT IT REALLY DOES TO DATA?
Pivot tables are really one of the great strengths of Excel and they've been a part of Excel for many years. They continued to be improved in every new version of Excel that's being released. What a pivot table allows you to do at a high level is analyze data really effectively. If we have a large data set in Excel and you put it into a pivot table, we will instantly be able to gain much more flexibility in terms of how you can look at that data vs. just having it in a static table. You can essentially move the fields or column headings around and view your data in lots of different ways really quickly and easily. All this might not make much Sense to you at this stage but it will become clearer as we go through some examples.
    THINGS, YOU MUST KNOW:
Before we directly get into the concept of pivot tables, we just want to take all of you through some rules and some guidelines with regards to the type of data that is suitable for a pivot table. Just because of the reason that, not all data is suitable for a pivot table. The best kind of data that suits the pivot table is transactional data.
What we actually mean by transactional data isn't necessarily to do with financial transactions. It can be any kind of data, where each record corresponds to a measurement of something.
For example: It could be a record of a sale in a store or maybe it might be something like a measurement for the amount of rain on a particular day.
2. Your data must be organized. It must be one record per row.
3. Pivot tables really don't work well with blank rows. If you will be having data with black rows or in unorganized manner, you need to make sure that the data is consistent and remove any blank rows.
4. We won’t be able to work with pivot table, if we will be having blank cells in our data. If there is any, we used to a put a 0 in. So that it's not left blank.
5. The most important thing you need to know before learning how to use pivot table is that your information or your data must have column headers. Pivot tables utilize column headings heavily.
6. There is one more thing that we like to always advise you is to put your data into a table prior to creating your pivot table. Now, you might think looking at your data is already being in a table format. Because this grid structure in Excel has a kind of like a table structure and may confuse us.
Tumblr media
There is a command on the home ribbon “format as table” and you can pick any one you like. It will then put your data into a table and that's useful for a number of reasons which will become clear as we go further.
We will just going to click somewhere in our data and go to “format as table”. After doing so, what Excel will do is it will say “where is the data for your table” and it basically picks up all of the data surrounding the click. We've got a tick in the box that says my table has headers.
Tumblr media
Hit, OK button.
Now, let us get into the main stream.
Pivot tables automatically summarize your data for you. So, you can slice and dice it in a million different ways. You can forget about creating lots of summary calculations.
Let Excel do the work for you.
We're looking at our order sheet here and our sample file.
Tumblr media
The first thing that we might want to do is take a look at what we might be interested in in knowing and how we might want to summarize this data. For example: we might want to know sales or quantity by product number.
Now, what we can do is we can go over to the insert tab and click either the blank pivot table option or recommended pivot tables.
Tumblr media
We'll start with recommended pivot tables, so that you can see what that looks like.
What Excel does in the pop-up that appears is give you a few different options for how you might want to summarize the data. This is an example: “Price by product number”: we might not be as interested in that here are some another ways of summarizing data as well.
Tumblr media
We will be actually starting with a blank pivot table.
For this, we'll go back to the insert tab and click on pivot table.
Tumblr media
A pop-up appears that basically asked us, if we want to insert this into a new worksheet or an existing worksheet.
Tumblr media
We'll just click “OK” and then there appears a new sheet.
On the left hand side which is highlighted is your blank pivot table space and on the right hand side is your list of fields in the original table and areas on your pivot table.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have got filters, columns, rows and values on the bottom right corner.
To see how this works, the first thing that we'll try to do is just select our total cost button and what this is going to do is move that total costs field over to the values area in our pivot table.
You can see that, all it is just summing all of the total costs in the previous sheet.
Tumblr media
Now, to add some dimension to our pivot table, we will actually take the order category to rows.
This is going to put the order categories in rows and tell us how much sales we have for each of those order categories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's just a way to slice the data up for us.
We will just trying to analyze our data with different perspectives.
Now, uncheck order category and let us see costs by product number.
Drag product number down to the rows and we will see that total cost column and broken up those costs by product number.
Tumblr media
Just clear your table for the next analysis and start fresh.
We're going to take a look at quantity.
Move quantity over to the values field and this will going to sum all of the quantity that we've sold.
Tumblr media
We can take our product number drag that down to the rows and this is going to tell us the quantity that we've sold by product number. Because, we've got product number in the rows and our quantity is in the value section.
Tumblr media
Okay, one thing that we can do too is add an additional field into our rows area and we'll put order category right before the product number and can switch the order as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is going to group or separate our quantity sold by the order category and then by the product just another way again to slice up our data and you can actually add as many fields as you want to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Move over that order category to the columns and product numbers in the rows. This will not only tell us by product number but also by order category that how many we've sold. This is really going to be helpful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving order category over the filters section. This allows us to filter our quantity sold by order category.
Tumblr media
We'll just select multiple items and then we want to take a look maybe at small and normal orders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This will filter down all of our quantity sold by small and normal orders and then by product numbers in those rows.
So, you can start to see how many different ways there are to start exploring your data.
We can actually also change our headers just to make it a little bit easier.
Tumblr media
We can also go to the design tab and it gives us different options to format our pivot table.
Tumblr media
Another thing that we can do is, we can right click the values and then sort it by largest to smallest. So that, we can easily see which ones were the top three sold and which ones were the bottom three by sorting it and making it easier for you all.
Tumblr media
Being a beginner, this is what you all can try to do in Excel with pivot table.
This might seem a bit tricky in starting to read and analyze the data in pivot table but, it really simplifies a lot of data to greater extent.
Keep your learning curve constant.

Soul Seer, Pt. 7
Tumblr media
Pairing: Loki x Reader
Warnings: Nothing really in this chapter
Author’s Note: Takes place right after Avengers 1, with time travel elements and hints of Infinity Wars. Does NOT follow cannon after Avengers.
* * *
Chapter 7
“Good morning.” You knocked on the door frame. “Mind if I come in?”
Steve Rogers looked up from a conference table covered in reports. He had a cup of coffee in one hand and was wearing generic issue SHIELD workout sweats. Stubble shadowed his jaw. “Sure. You, ah, look good.”
“You look like you a week-long nap is in order.” You tried to smile. “Delegating isn’t really in your wheelhouse, is it?”
His conflicting feelings hit you even though he only frowned. “I give orders just fine.”
“True, but you still have to be working just as hard as everyone else… even if you’re already running on fumes.” His scowl deepened at your words. You stepped closer, voice softening. “I’m sorry. I tend to let my mouth run away from me. It’s just that I can see that you are far more exhausted than you look. Stopping to sleep for a bit is completely understandable.”
The Captain stared at you for a long moment before nodding. “You’re right. That why you’re down here? To send me to my room?” He tried to joke.
“No, actually. Loki is going to roll out a plan to Fury’s people, and he asked me to be certain you were there.”
“I wasn’t invited to that meeting.” Steve stood up, squaring his shoulders.
“Neither was I.” You smiled. “But look who set it up.”
“Loki wants me there? You’re certain?”
“He was very specific.”
“Give me five minutes.” Rogers put down his coffee and left the room. A few minutes later he returned in a fresh uniform. “Let’s go.”
Waiting for the elevator he kept glancing sideways at you. “What?”
“Just trying to figure you out.” He sighed. “You seem like a good person. Stable. Yet you’ve been in Loki’s head. You seem connect now. I just don’t trust him.”
“Probably a good plan.” You smiled. “And for what it’s worth, I’m trying to figure me out, too. But I can promise you, I’m not a liar and I’m not going to betray Tony’s trust.”
The elevator doors opened and you both stepped in. He turned to you with an smirk. “You, for some weird reason, I trust.” He laughed. “I’m learning to quickly adapt to weird.”
“Good to know.” You smiled. The Captain’s straightforward and honest personality made him a bit of a calm amongst the stormy auras of the spies which made up the highest ranks of SHIELD and the unique people of Stark’s organization.
Through the glass wall of the conference room, you could see Loki standing at the head of the table scowling at the man sitting to Fury’s left. Stark, too, scowled. Your paced slowed as the aggravation and hostility hit you full force.
Steve’s steps faltered as he quirked an eyebrow at you.
“Just got kicked in the teeth by their bad attitudes.” You shook your head. “It’s okay. My shields are stronger than yesterday.”
“You let me know if you need anything.” Steve offered, placing his hand on the small of your back. He looked up to see Loki’s eye turn to him, eyebrows high. “Though, I’m sure Loki won’t let them get away with much.”
“I’m sure.” You walked through the door as Steve held it open. All of the seats were taken, so you stood towards the back, beside two men in black SHIELD gear. Steve edged in between you and the men. The man beside Fury stopped talking and stared.
“Were you supposed to be here?” He said, it wasn’t really a question.
Stark rolled his eyes. “Griffin, it’s fine. Go on.”
“She doesn’t have clear...”
“Continue.” Loki hissed.
The man, Griffin, looked at Fury for the nod before continuing his brief. “The hanger is being used to store the alien equipment until it can be identified further and crated. We will need you to train a team of technical SMEs to head up the inventory logistics.”
“Ah,” Loki looked at the ceiling. “There it is.” He paused before looking at Tony. While staring the man in the eye, he pulled up a complex set of calculations on the 3D display. Everyone looked confused, but Stark and Banner leaned forward. “I took the liberty to review the calculations of the containment field for your arc reactor powering the tower. With some modifications and improvements that I’ve provided here, you will be able to create a large enough containment chamber to effectively disintegrate the material while modulating intensity due to variable non-earth element fusion events. Of course, the bleed-off excess energy will be immense. Therefore, I have included a conversion device allowing the energy to be transferred into your existing National power grid.”
The room was silent. You could feel the question and uncertainty screaming off everyone but Banner and Stark. They were both bright with concentration and wonderment. Tony sat back, his hand over his mouth. Banner slowly took his glasses off, turning an opened mouth stare to Loki.
“What?!” Fury finally broke.
“This would power the whole country for, what? Um...” Tony rubbed his face.
“At yesterday's consumption rate, 11 years, 4 months, and 22 days.” Loki answered plainly.
“Tony,” Steve had an idea what they were talking about, but he wanted to be certain. “What is Loki’s proposal? Exactly?”
“It’s a furnace.” Banner answered. “A way to destroy all of the alien material and convert it to useable electricity.”
“It would take months to build.” Stark was staring at the calculations again. “But it would be worth it, a billion times over.”
“Well,” Griffin shrugged. “That’s one way to get rid of the slag. It doesn’t address the training you need to provide...”
Loki shut down the 3D model. His face went hard. The room went silent again. “No. There will be no cataloging assets. No training on Chitauri weapons. No alteration to Earth technology. It all burns.”
The room exploded. Everyone shouted at once. You flinched back from the onslaught. Loki shouted “ENOUGH!” at the same time Steve shouted “QUIET!” - The room froze.
“I don’t think that decision is up to you, Loki.” Fury said calmly. “The technology out there...”
“Will shift the balance on the world stage, immediately.” Steve scowled.
“There are bigger things in the universe, Captain.” Fury scowled.
“But we still have to live here. A shift that big will have major geo-political consequences, and not necessarily for the better.” Steve retorted.
Banner looked between the two before turning back to Loki. “You said Thanos would be coming.”
“I did.”
“So we need every advanced weapon we can get.” Griffin growled.
“How effective are traditional munitions against your suit? Against your shield?” Loki asked.
“Chitauri weapons are the AK’s of space race, huh?” Tony sighed.
“I would suggest something of a more innovative nature.” Loki nodded.
“I can’t agree with this.” Griffin growled.
“If we move as if we are going to keep all this alien technology, it will cause global turmoil. If we say we’re going to share it, there will years of posturing and infighting before anything gets accomplished.” Steve leaned forward, hands on the table.
“But if by destroying it, we can provide clean energy to bring the world’s powers together to work on a solution...” Banner muttered.
“It’s a step in the right direction.” Rogers nodded.
You leaned back against the wall, eyes catching Loki’s. He was good. The corner of your lip tipped up. The hard, determined lines of his face never changed, but you could see the gold shoot through the green of aura. You felt the satisfaction.
Ghost like finger swept down your cheek, down your jaw, around the back of your neck. The urge to tip your head back for a kiss was overwhelming. Instead you smiled and closed your eyes. The touch vanished and you looked up to see his eye sparkle with mischief.
“You mean to say,” Fury was leaning forward on the table. “You want me to go to the World Security Counsel and tell them we’re destroying all the alien weapons in exchange for putting the utility companies out of business? That’s not going to fly, gentlemen.”
Loki stood at the head of the table, looking every bit the royal he’d been raised to be. “You’re going to tell them the Chitauri weapons are useless in the defense of your world against alien forces, and your only specialist refused to tell you how to use them against your own people. I will, however, help you clean up the damage. I will assist your finest minds with their plans to protect this world. I will help you harness the energy and materials necessary to turn those plans into reality. I will fulfill my oath. I will not be a tool for your government, or any other.”
He paused, turning a small smile to Bruce. “Unless the good doctor wishes to order me to teach the people of SHIELD the secrets of alien weaponry.”
“I, ah,” Banner’s eyes shot around the room. “Um, I think, ah...”
Loki’s brow arched. So did Fury’s. You felt like laughing.
“Just go with your gut, Doctor.” Steve said kindly.
Banner took a deep breath. “I’m going with Loki’s plan.”
“That’s not -” Griffin growled.
“Don’t.” Fury bit off. “There’s no point. So, this continues as a salvage operation. Sweep up the alien technology as quickly and as safely as possible. Run down anything that lands in the wrong hands. Quarantine at a protected location.”
“So we’re done here.” Griffin frowned.
“This meeting is, yeah.” Fury closed his folder, standing to leave. The SHIELD personnel began to file out behind him.
Loki pulled out a chair and sat down. He crooked a finger to beckon you over. His hands pulled you down to sit on his knee. You smiled, the calmness on your face not betraying the nervousness you felt at everyone’s scrutiny. “I would like your assistance with the next meeting.”
“We have representatives from the Office of Emergency Management, the National Guard and the city coming in.” Stark explained.
“Emotions will likely be running high and there will be a great deal to accomplish in a short time.” Loki’s hand slid down your back.
“You need someone to cut through the posturing and get to the point?” You asked.
“It would definitely be better coming from you.” Stark rocked back and forth in his chair. He swung around to look at Rogers, who now rested a hip on the table. “So, did you just decide to pop in or we’re you following Y/N through the halls?”
“I asked her to fetch the Captain.” Loki admitted freely.
“Pieces on a chess board, huh?” Stark rolled his eyes.
“What?” Steve asked.
“You have to admit, Cap, what you said was critical to shutting SHIELD’s plans down.” Stark shrugged.
You saw anger flare to life around the Captain as his brow creased, glaring at Loki. “You used me! You had her come get me just to manipulate me.”
“Captain, I can assure you...” Loki began but was cut off.
“I can’t trust you at all.” Steve pushed off the table, and turning to leave. “Not at all.” He stormed away.
You stood up to follow, but Loki’s hand on your waist stopped you. His face remained impassive, but you knew better. Leaning forward, you pressed your lips to his cheek. Brushing another kiss over his ear you whisper, “Let me make it right.”
Loki looked at you, but did not answer. You ran your fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck. “I’ll be right back.”
He nodded once.
You ran from the room, trying to catch Steve before the elevator came. You got your arm in the doors just in time, causing them to open again. He stood there, hands fisted and jaw tight. “I don’t want to hear it.”
“Well, too bad.” You got in the elevator with him. “Steve, you said what you said because it’s what you believe. You can’t argue that with me.” He just glared at you. “Loki recognized that you would take the stance you did. It’s consistent with your known beliefs. Someone needed to say SHIELD couldn’t have the alien weapons because it would shift the balance of power and it couldn’t be Loki. It would be immediately dismissed if it were. Coming from you, it’s worth more. Think about it, Steve.”
He just sighed heavily and rubbed his eyes with the heels of his hands.
“You’re exhausted. On edge. I understand why you got mad.” You sighed as well. The elevator doors opened and you both stepped off into an empty hall. “Loki may have manipulated the situation to assure the outcome he wanted, but he did not manipulate you. You responded honestly. If anything, Loki knew he couldn’t do what he needed to do without you. He needed you to be there to moral voice in the room.”
“He could have just asked.” Steve grumbled.
“Really? You don’t think Griffin wouldn’t have said you were in cahoots with Loki if he had?” You squeezed his forearm. “Steve, your reaction had to be in the moment and honest. You’re poker face sucks.”
“Did Loki tell you all this? Did you know when you came to get me?”
“No.” You shrugged. “Between my own talents and being able to work through all the stuff I learned while I was in his head... I guess I’m beginning to understand how he thinks... sometimes anyway.”
“He know you’re tell me this?”
“Yes. He would never do it himself.” You smiled up at him. “Not to be mean, just because he wouldn’t think to do it. But I want to do what I can to keep us, I don’t know, just okay. Things are going to get tough. I think we’re all going to need each other and things being so raw makes it hard.”
Steve nodded. “Okay, I’ll think about what you said. I think I’m going to take your advice, too.”
“Get some rest?”
“A little.”
“Good.” You hit the elevator button. Steve began walking away. You called out to him one last time. “Steve. Thank you, by the way, for always checking on me, too. I really appreciate it. Sleep well.”
He waved at you as you disappeared into the elevator.
As you stepped out of the elevator, heading back to the conference rooms, you nearly ran bodily into Loki. His arms wrapped around your waist, pulling you tight against his chest. Your hands instinctively slipped over his shoulders. He inhaled deep, nose trailing over the skin of your temple.
“Did you calm the Captain?”
“I did.”
His tongue slid along the sensitive flesh beneath your ear. His breath hot. “You wish to assure his alliance.”
“I think he’s a friend worth having.”
Loki’s lips captured you lower lip before his tongue slid over yours. He pulled away much too quickly. Beneath his tight control, his simmering desire, you felt something else... “A friend to you or I?”
You sighed. His long experience on the outside, the one not included, left a painful echo.
“There is no difference.” You breathed against his lips.
Loki’s hand came to the back of your head as he kissed you hard. You felt his fingers press into your lower back, pressing you against him. Passionate, deep, the kiss carried as much emotion as heat. You moaned into his mouth, unable to contain it. His lips curled up, even as he kissed you.
“My pet, you are a delight.” He spoke against your lips, still holding you tight against him.
“Not so bad yourself.” You whispered.
“Keep that a secret. I have a reputation to uphold.” He nipped you lower lip lightly between his teeth. “Speaking of which, we need to get to our meeting. How does the saying go? I’ll be the be the bad god, you be the good mortal.”
You giggled. “Is that like bad cop, good cop?”
Loki leaned over and whispered in your ear. “Yes, but with more magic and delicious noises.”
You laughed.
The elevator doors opened. Natasha stepped off with a group of people, Loki released you as she scowled at you both. Pulling you back against the wall as the seven people walked by, Loki breathed against your ear. “I fully intend to finish what I’ve begun, my pet. This is but a minor delay.”
“Promise?” You whispered to Loki as you smiled politely at the last gentleman to exit the elevator, an older Police Chief. Something cold, and feeling distinctly like his fingertips, tweaked your right nipple. You jumped, looking at Loki standing a off to your left. Magic.
He just gave you a wicked smile. Oh, yes. It promised.

Biomed Grid | Alzheimer’s Disease and Metabolic Dysfunction: No Association Between L72m Ghlr Variant in Brazilian Population
Introduction
In Alzheimer Disease (AD) the pattern of expression of the orexigenic hormone ghrelin is modified [1]. The neurocognitive function have influence for certain peptide hormones by the communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system (CNS) [2]. DA is a neurological disorder a profound and progressively cognitive decline is observed, including memory loss, by the functional and morphological deterioration of the hippocampus and temporal lobe with accumulation of aggregates of the amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) [3]. In these areas of cognitive system and memory a reduction of ghrelin was observed in AD brain [4,5]. Ghrelin is a hormone with a plethora of functions. It is codified by the GHRL gene and contains four exons but only exons 1 and 2 code for the mature peptide [6]. A family of related peptides that can be generated by alternative splicing and/or post-translational modifications from GHRL gene [7]. The L72M (C/A, rs696217, p.L72M, 408 nt) variant is located in exon 2, outside the coding region for mature ghrelin [8]. This variant was associated with increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome [9] which has been considered as a risk factor to AD [10].
Ghrelin is known to play an important role in regulatory system for growth, energy homeostasis and metabolic function [11], is a hormone that stimulates hunger and, interestingly, increased during sleep. Ghrelin has a significant role in neurotrophy, particularly in the hippocampus [4] and in some inflammatory process [12]. It also acts in cognition [5], memory and learning processes. This hormone was correlated with a number of eating and drink disorder [13], and neurological disorders [14,15] such as AD [4,5,16] and influence both synaptic and structural plasticity of determined regions of the brain [2]. Considering that the AD is deeply affected by the metabolic and inflammatory conditions and ghrelin carry out the regulation of energy balance [5,17] and inflammatory processes we selected a variant of GHRL that was associated with metabolic syndrome and obesity [18], the L72M, to verify the relationship of this variant with AD by a case-control association study. Seminara et al., in review working, argues about the potential therapeutic benefits of ghrelin as a neurocognitive agent and a promising approach to DA [19]. In this context is important to consider the frequencies of variants with potential pharmacogenic as is the variant L72M for DA.
Materials and MethodsPopulation samples
The Brazilian subjects samples, were obtained from Paraná and São Paulo States, from 395 elderly, being 194 AD patients (mean age 76.1±8.77; males: 73, females: 121), with age and sex matched with 201 healthy controls (mean age 71.9±8.25; males: 58, females: 143) as of Behavioral Neurology Department UNIFESP/EPM, Geriatric Ambulatory of FAMEMA and Cognitive Dysfunction Ambulatory, Hospital of Clinics UFPR by Paraná State. The AD patients were diagnosed according to the NINCDS-ADRDA (National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke-Alzheimer’s disease and Related Disorders Association) criteria for probable AD [20,21]. The diagnoses were made in the specialized hospitals in diagnosing AD by the dementia experts. We considered patients with at least one year of evolution of AD, and were contemplated homogeneously all the stages, mild, moderate and severe of the disease. The control group has been previously described [22].
All subjects gave informed consent for participation in this study and this research is approved by the institutional Ethics Committee study (Protocol number 1192.117.11.08). All experiments were conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki.
Laboratory Analysis
Venous blood was obtained from all of the participants in a periodic clinical consultation and stored at -40ºC after separation of plasma. The total genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples using a Qiagen extraction kit , according to the manufacturer’s instructions, or by a standardized salting out method [23]and then diluted to a final concentration of 20 ng/ μL. Genotyping of the missense L72M (rs696217; C_3151003_20) variant was performed with the TaqMan genotyping kit assays (Applied Biosystems) by Real Time PCR in a Mastercycler realplex 2. The reactions were performed in the following steps: (1) 50 °C/2 min, (2) 95 °C/10 min, (3) repeat 50 times 95 °C/15s, interspersed by 60 °C/min
Statistical Analysis
Allele frequencies were obtained by direct counting the alleles from the observed genotypes. The Hardy-Weiberg equilibrium (HWE) was calculated manually. The chi-square test, used to compare categorical variables, was calculated using Clump software and SPSS version 17.0 for Windows; (Chicago, III., USA). A value of p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results
The genotype distributions of the L72M variant of the GHRL gene were in Hardy–Weinberg (HW) equilibrium in patients (X2 = 1.52) and controls (X2 = 0.03). Genotypes and allele frequencies of the GHRL variant analyzed are summarized in Table 1. The genotypic and allele distribution of rs696217 did not show significant differences between cases and controls.
Table 1: Genotypes and allele frequencies of L72M GHRL gene variants in Alzheimer Disease (AD) and Elderly control (EC), and results of comparisons by χ2 (p) between them.
Discussion
Although many researchers have shown that ghrelin is involved in the neuropathology of AD [4,5], the only study of genetic association between GHRL gene and AD was performed in a Japanese population [16], and this is the first study in a Euroderived population. Similar to our study, Shibata and collaborators [16] did not find association between L72M and AD, but their described genotype frequencies were significantly different from our cases and controls (p < 0.0001). In Shibata’s study [16] the heterozygote genotype was more frequent than expected and the genotype frequencies were not in HWE. Even so, our data are consistent regarding absence of association in a different population. The L72M variant frequencies from our sample did not differ from another Brazilian population study [24] and other Euro-derived population [25], we did not find statistical difference between the frequencies (p > 0.7 and p > 0.2 respectively).
The L72M variant has been associated with obesity [8] higher triglyceride levels, dietary fat intake and lower HDL-cholesterol [9], higher body mass index (BMI) [26], fat mass and visceral fat [27], modulation of glucose-induced insulin secretion [28], risk for type 2 diabetes [29] and increase in prevalence of metabolic syndrome [9]. This variant, L72M, associated with these various disorders correlated with a physiological condition of insulin-resistance, may modulate glucose-induced insulin secretion [30]. In a study with Wistar rats, Antunes et al., suggest that the fasting ghrelin have a role in the pathogenesis of insulin-resistance by the possible loss of insulin inhibitory effect may be an adaptive metabolic adjustment. More studies are needed to understand these pathways [31]. Currently many positive associations have been reported between Alzheimer’s disease and metabolic factors such as obesity, abdominal adiposity, [29] diabetes and insulin resistance, BMI [29], abnormal glucose and insulin levels [32], and metabolic syndrome [10]. Metabolic disturbance is an important factor contributing to neurodegenerative diseases; however, the neuropathological mechanisms underlying these changes are not yet clear [33]. The GHRL gene is very complex and can be regulated at multiple levels [7]. The L72M variant, located outside the coding region for mature ghrelin, could alter the stability of the mRNA or interfere with the splicing of the prepro-hormone. Despite the recent evidence that suggests a strict link between metabolic disorders and AD [10,34], in this work we did not find association with the variant of Ghrelin that has a known correlation with metabolic effects. Gahete et al. [1] argues for a need to establish the precise role of the ghrelin system in AD. Although the L72M mutation does not affect the susceptibility to AD, it does not exclude the possibility of action of other variants or epigenetic control factors of GHRL gene in Alzheimer’s disease.

Earth Engine in BigQuery: A New Geospatial SQL Analytics
Tumblr media
BigQuery Earth Engine
With Earth Engine directly integrated into BigQuery, Google Cloud has expanded its geographic analytics capabilities. Incorporating powerful raster analytics into BigQuery, this new solution from Google Cloud Next '25 lets SQL users analyse satellite imagery-derived geographical data.
Google Cloud customers prefer BigQuery for storing and accessing vector data, which represents buildings and boundaries as points, lines, or polygons.
Find an Earth Engine raster dataset in BigQuery image assets, Cloud GeoTiff, or BigQuery Sharing.
If no weight is given, pixels are weighted by geometry position.

What are Excel formulas used for?
Excel is not just a grid where you can enter numbers in columns and rows. With this program, you can do all the mathematical operations you can imagine. You have to know how to create formulas. Yes, you can use Excel to calculate the totals of a column or row of numbers.
This great and multifunctional program performs operations with the application of formulas in its cells, the same in which you can do calculations of all kinds. Please take advantage of the power of Microsoft Excel, and learn how to perform excel index function with formulas, which can be from simple arithmetic steps or so complicated that they include conditional statements and nested functions.
Tumblr media
A formula always begins with an equal sign (=), followed by numbers, mathematical operators (plus and minus signs, for example), and count function in excel, which can extend its power. Thus, all Excel formulas use a primary and easy-to-memorize syntax.
Watch how to make a formula in Excel:
Begin each formula with an equal sign (=), which tells Excel that the string of characters you will enter into the cell is a mathematical formula.
Coordinate references: it is when you detail the parts of your operation. They are the letters of your columns plus the numbers of your row.
Arithmetic operators for basic calculations: you can use any, be it addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
Press "Enter" when your formula is the way you want it.
Alter the order of the operation: if you put a parenthesis, this will be done in the first instance.
Basic Excel Formulas
In Excel, you can perform certain mathematical operations without needing a complex formula or a function you have to execute. Technically, addition is an Excel formula. The others are used as special operators in Excel.
SUM: The formula adds the values you can have in the cells. You can do it separately or through intervals.
Subtraction: To subtract two or more values, you must put the subtraction symbol (-).
Multiplication: to multiply values of one or more cells, you must put an asterisk (*) between them.
Division: To divide the values of one or several cells, you must put the slash (/) between them.
Excel maintains the logical order of math operations, multiplication and division first, then addition and subtraction. In addition, sumifs function in excel supports the use of parentheses to give precedence to operations that should resolve first before others.

Reference formulas
Excel reference formulas are enormously helpful when working with databases, tables, or large volumes of information. And on this page, you will find content that will help you improve and better understand its use. Some of the primary Excel lookup and reference formulas are:
VLOOKUP. vlookup excel allows us to look up a value in the first column of a table and then returns a value in the same row from a specified column.
DIRECTION. It creates a cell reference in text once the row and column numbers have been specified.
COLUMN. It allows us to get the column number of a reference.
LINE. It gives us the row number of a reference.

Biomed Grid | Head Injury Criterion: Mini Review
Mini Review
DHead Injury Criterion (HIC) is the most important parameter in terms of human survival; it is indicative of brain injuries due to the impact of the head in numerous cases, with a vehicle. This index can be estimated by integrating the resulting acceleration of the head (measured in its gravity center) in a time window according to the following definition:
Where:
a) R (t) is the resulting acceleration, in g, measured in the gravity center of the head;
b) T0 the simulation start time in seconds;
c) TE the simulation end time in seconds;
d) t1 and t2 represent respectively the initial and final instant of a time interval, expressed in seconds, during which the HIC assumes the maximum value; the width of this interval is conventionally equal to 36ms [1].
The optimization is done by varying t1 and t2, i.e. the initial and final instant. In addition to the HIC36 there is the identically defined HIC15 with t2 - t1 = 15ms [2]. The 36ms interval is designed to understand the maximum load for impact waveforms that last longer than 36ms. The analysis of probability of injury of both HIC15 and 36 shows that the former is more restrictive. The severity indices do not provide a direct interpretation of the injury; moreover, they are defined with respect to different physical domains. For this reason, various mappings are developed to translate a scale severity index of Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS). The NHTSA specified criteria for converting the values of HIC to the probability of injury p(AIS ≥ i) with i between 1 and 6. Since Euro NCAP [3] is based on the definition of the risk level of injuries mainly on the p level (AIS ≥ 3) (or, that is the same. AIS3+), the corresponding function is shown in relationship 2, where: Φ indicates the normal cumulative distribution, the mean μ = 7.45231 and the standard deviation σ = 0.73998.
For p (AIS ≥ 2) HIC36 and (AIS ≥ 4) HIC36 the numerical values are μ = 6.96352, σ = 0.84664 and μ = 7.65605, σ = 0.6058 respectively [1,4,5] (Figure 1).
Figure 1: Conversion criteria by equation 2.
p(AIS3+) HIC36 = φ ((ln (HIC36)-μ)/σ) (2)
A recent NHTSA research [7] on injury improvement criteria, includes the review of existing regulations, and specifies a HIC for the 50th percentile of male ATD (Anthropomorphic Test Devices). Beginning in 2000, the NHTSA final rule adopts limits that reduce the maximum time to calculate the HIC to 15 milliseconds (HIC15) compared to the previous HIC36 and the revision of the limits for different sizes of dummies fixing in 700 the threshold value of HIC15. The structure of the head for the whole family of dummies used in FMVSS 208 [8] is essentially a rigid padded aluminum shell that does not deform as the human skull deforms under load. The amount and type of deformation in the human skull, due to a load, varies significantly with age and with marked difference between very young children and adults [9]. The value of the HIC can be linked to a level of injury of the AIS scale. However, one can note that there are no unified and universally recognized conversion factors. Some studies, including those conducted in [10], try to link the acceleration of the head to the probability that this can be fatal to humans or do not cause injury. The result of the work consists of a table where the probability of injuries of different entities, defined according to the levels of the AIS scale, is highlighted (Table 1). More recently the expressions that determine the probability of AIS + injury (between 1 and 6) in function of the HIC were derived [11] in the case of an adult eliminating the cumulative distribution function.
Table 1: Head injury on AIS scale
Calculating the HIC value over the 36ms interval, the correlation equations for AIS3 + and AIS4 +, are [12]:
p(AIS3+) = 1/ [1+exp((3,39+200/HIC36)-0.00372*HIC36)] (3)
p(AIS4+) = 1/ [1+exp((4,90+200/HIC36)-0.00351*HIC36)] (4)
Calculating HIC value over 15ms, correlation equations are:
p(AIS3+) = 1/ [1+exp((3,39+140/HIC15)-0.00531*HIC15)] (5)
p(AIS4+) = 1/ [1+exp((4,90+140/HIC15)-0.00501*HIC15)] (6)
These equations are substantially derived by the curve proposed by Prasad and Mertz [2] expressed in a sigmoid form; one can assume that they give a better approximation than the relationship Figure 2 shows the trend of the probability curve in the case AIS4 + as a function of the value of HIC; the probability of AIS4 + is about 17% for HIC36 = 1000 or HIC15 = 700 and 5% for HIC36 = 650 or HIC15 = 400. It increases to 55% for HIC36 = 1500 or HIC15 = 1100 (about).

I had a great week. I caught up on more small stuff and put some more work into the new gallery downloaders.
downloaders
Unfortunately, tumblr decided to kill their 'raw' url access this week. There is not a lot of firm word from tumblr on the issue, but there is some scattered conversation around, and it seems it is dead and not to return. Whatever the ultimate reason for this, it broke our tumblr downloader, so v318 has an updated tumblr parser to fetch the 1280px versions of urls. I have also taken the opportunity to switch the tumblr 'gallery' parser over to the new system, so the tumblr downloader now fetches and associates neater 'post urls' for its file import objects rather than raw file urls and adds 'creator' tags. However, because of the URL changes, your tumblr subscriptions will hence hit their 'periodic' file limits and likely redownload some 1280px versions of files you already have in raw--if this affects you heavily, you might want to pause your tumblr subs before you update and carefully experiment and curate what happens after you are working again in v318. Note that some artists (like lmsketch) attach a lot of images to their posts, so if your periodic limit were 100--and that 100 now means 'posts' instead of file urls--you are potentially talking a lot of files that are going to be redownloaded! Again, I recommend heavy tumblr subscribers pause before update and maybe consider recreating their tumblr subs from scratch with an initial file limit of 10 or so.
The multi-gallery download page has some more improvements this week. I've fixed an issue where the sub-downloaders on the same page were unintentionally all sharing some bandwidth rules with each other. Multi-galleries also now have an 'added' column. And the 'pause' ⏸ and 'stop' ⏹ characters used in the lists on the multi- pages are now editable, also under options->downloading, for those who have trouble viewing this unicode.
I have also made the 'only get a gallery page every x seconds' option global to the whole program (it was previously per-downloader). Being able to create twenty new whateverbooru queries at once with a single click of the paste button is powerful and great, but it also meant spamming servers with many heavy gallery requests all at once, so now all downloaders share the same slot that comes up every x seconds. The delay option is under options->downloading. I recommend 15s for downloaders and 5s for subscriptions. Let's see how 'global' works, and if it is an annoying bottleneck, I will see about making it per-domain.
Subscriptions now auto-compact whenever they sync. This means they delete old fully processed URLs they no longer need to calculate file velocity just to keep them running snappy. You shouldn't notice any change except maybe a faster-loading 'manage subscriptions' dialog.
A couple of unusual data problems meant that xbooru and gelbooru were not searching well in the new system. I have fixed these, so if you got affected by this, please rerun your queries and let me know if you still have any problems. I also added gallery parsers for rule34.paheal and mishimmie (the paheal update should finally fix the 'paheal gets gallery urls in file results' issue!). Advanced users might like to refer to the gelbooru situation (and tumblr and artstation api gallery url classes) to look at url classes's new 'next gallery page' component, which lets you define an easy logical way to predict the next gallery page from a recognised gallery url and now acts as a fallback if the gallery parser cannot find one (as is usually the case with api results!).
full list
downloaders:
extended url classes to support 'next gallery page' generation--a fallback that predicts next gallery page url if the parser cannot provide it (as is often the case with APIs and unreliable next-page-url galleries such as gelbooru)
integrated this new next page generation into new gallery processing pipeline
updated gelbooru, tumblr api and artstation gallery api url classes to support the new next gallery page business
fixed the url class for xbooru, which wasn't recognising gallery urls correctly
wrote new gallery parsers for rule34.paheal and mishimmie (which are both shimmie but have slightly different gallery layout). this should finally solve the 'one paheal gallery url is being parsed into the file list per page' problem
'fixed' the tumblr parser to fetch the 1280px url (tumblr killed the raw url trick this past week)
misc text/status fixes
wrote a gallery parser for tumblr that fetches the actual tumblr post urls and hence uses the new tumblr post parser naturally! (tumblr post urls are now more neatly associated as 'known urls' on files!)
note that as the tumblr downloader now produces different kinds of urls, your tumblr subs will hit your periodic limits the next time they run. they will also re-download any 1280px files that are different to the previously fetched raws due to the above raw change (protip: keep your subscription periodic file limits low)
cut the 'periodic limit' subscription warning popup down to a much simpler statement and moved the accompanying help to a new help button on the edit sub panel
multi-gallery pages now have an 'added' column like multi-watchers
the new 'pause' ⏸ and 'stop' ⏹ characters shown in the multi-downloader pages are now customisable under options->downloading (some users had trouble with the unicode)
the watcher now shows the 'stop character' if checking is 404/DEAD
fixed an issue where the new gallery imports on the same multi-page were all sharing the same identifier for their ephemeral 'downloader instance' bandwidth tracker, which meant they were all sharing the same '100rqs per 5mins' etc... rules
the page and subscription downloader 'gallery page delay' is now program-wide (since both these things can run in mass parallel). let's see how it goes, maybe we'll move it to per-site
subscription queries now auto-compact on sync! this means that surplus old urls will be removed from their caches, keeping the whole object lean and quick to load/save
gallery logs now also compact! they will remove anything older than twice the current death velocity, but always keep the newest 25 regardless of age
.
misc:
the top-right hover window will now always appear--previously, it would only pop up if the client had some ratings services, but this window now handles urls
harmonised 'known urls' view/copy menu to a single code location and added sorted url class labels to entries (which should reduce direct-file-url misclicks)
greatly sped up manage tags dialogs initial calculation of possible actions on a tag alteration event, particularly when the dialog holds 10k+ tags
greatly sped up the second half of this process, when the action choice is applied to the manage tag dialog's current media list
the buttons on the manage tags dialog action popup dialog will now only show a max of 25 rows on their tooltips
some larger->smaller selection events on large pages with many tags should be significantly faster
subscription popups should now 'blank' their network job controls when not working (rather than leaving them on the old job, and without flickery-ly removing the job control completely)
the file cache and gallery log summary controls now have ... ellipsized texts to reduce their max width
fixed an issue where larger 'overriding bandwidth' status wait times would sometimes show instead of legit regular smaller bandwidth wait times
removed a now-superfluous layer of buffering in the thumbnail grid drawing pipeline--it seems to have removed some slight lag/flicker
I may have fixed the issue where a handful of thumbs will sometimes remain undrawn after several fast scrolling events
gave the some-linux-flavours infinitely-expanding popup message problem another pass. there _should_ be an explicit reasonable max width on the thing now
added a 'html5lib not found!' notification to the network->downloaders menu if this library is missing (mostly for users running from source)
help->about now states if lz4 is present
gave 'running from source' help page another pass, including info on running a virtual environment
in file lookup scripts, the full file content now supports string transformations--if this is set to occur, the file will be sent as an addition POST parameter and the content-type set to 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded'. this is a temp fix to see if we can get whatanime.ga working, and may see some more work
if the free space on the db dir partition is < 500MB, the program will not boot
if the free space on the db dir partition is < 1GB, the client will not sync repositories
on boot the client can now attempt to auto-heal a missing local_hashes table. it will give an appropriate error message
misc post-importing-cleanup refactoring
next week
I still have a few more small things I want to catch up on, but it isn't so urgent now, so I'd like to get started on the new 'searcher' object, which will be the final component of the downloader overhaul (it will convert the initial 'samus_aran' search phrase into an initialised search url). I feel good about it and may have some test ui for advanced users to play with by v319.
