1000 fans theory? tell me more?
hellooooo lovely. of course! welcome to the show!
The 1000 Fans Theory was an essay written by Kevin Kelly, who was (still is? Idk) an influential entertainment and media journalist in 2008. It’s been both widely celebrated, and debated, over the years, and while it’s still referred to these days, it’s not as solid as it once was due to the way creators of the entertainment industry (including influencers) use social platforms and communicate with fans, the awful economy, and the development of so many more media channels now involved in marketing. The artist-to-fan relationship these days is more important than ever, but so much harder to facilitate and uphold due to the influx and oversaturation of media, and people’s attention spans. So I use it loosely sometimes, but let’s dig in to the bulk of it.
This theory, in short, was somewhat initially proposed as an alternative path than trying to just aim for stardom.
The main takeaways from it are:
- the internet is extremely valuable for artists to cultivate and uphold the longevity of their direct artist to fan relationship
- a “true fan”, I guess what we’d call “stans” these days, is someone who will spend approx $100 a year (a bit over $8 per month) on your content/merch/music/art whatever it may be. 1,000 of those? You’re making $100,000 a year.
- however, this is premised on developing a direct relationship, so no middle men taking cuts (managers, publishers, etc.), which was proposed as we now have the internet to cut out a lot of those middlemen (which, again, over time, people have found a way to make money and become said middlemen)
Now, this theory was roughly reliant and in response to the Long Tail Theory, which is a business/marketing/strategy theory that doesn’t really hold up anymore, because of the powerful players in the industry adjusting algorithms and shoving the same big artists in our face over and over again. So it means that people aren’t connecting and finding artists in the way that they once were, because of “songs that you may like” or Twitter recommendations or sponsored ads or whatever, getting in the way. It’s harder to be a niche artist and gain the 1000 true fans or any fans at all, these days.
So, the direct fan to artist relationship is now so much different to what it was back in 2008. And there are heaps of middlemen in play. And everything is so expensive. And even if you were just getting $100,000 a year directly from fans, you would still be paying a heap of overheads running your own business/career.
Anyway
I refer to this theory mainly because it is so much more of a surefire way to have a long-standing and solid career, rather than jump in the deep end and try and spread yourself so thin to reach as many people as possible, that you actually miss out on True Fans and only receive casual fans. It’s the reliance on the algorithm, as opposed to the loyalty of your actual fans and fostering a community. And look… it works for some people. But oftentimes, these folks can end up as one hit wonders or have their career fizzle out hard and fast because they can’t rely on True Fans to buy everything they put out and engage with their posts. They’re seen as fake/money hungry/celebrities who don’t care about their fans. It’s just a different experience.
This theory is old, and works far better in relation to smaller artists when building a platform, and doesn’t super duper relate exactly to louis’ career by any means, but I will say that the dedication and fan loyalty that he has, in comparison to artists that have a more casual fanbase/not as many True Fans, will concrete his career and he wont fall. We won’t let him fall.
You can read the essay online, and also debates against it/updates to the world we live in now, and yeah, it doesn’t hold up as well anymore. But the point stands that if you have a dedicated amount of True Fans who will buy everything you put out, go to shows when you’re in town, engage with your content etc., you are way less likely to burn out hard. And he has our loyalty because of the artist-to-fan relationship we have. It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality. Having 1,000 fans who buy everything and go to your shows, over having 10,000 followers who barely engage with you, is a massive difference to a successful career, and is much to be said for the debates about louis’ streaming/follower numbers.
It may seem like common sense, but definitely is an interesting read when you deep dive into the essay. Anyway, that’s that!

“Seller services,” as Amazon refers to these and other sources of revenue, are a large and growing part of Amazon’s revenue — larger than Amazon Web Services and quite profitable. They also mean that letting a seller market off-brand products on your platform is often going to be more profitable than selling your own discount brands: Undercutting an independent seller’s small coffee-grinder business is, it turns out, a bad look and, in the big picture, maybe not worth the trouble. Sellers serve a lot of purposes for Amazon and joke among themselves about the free labor they provide. In exchange for access to the largest sales channel on the internet, they do a lot more than just pay Amazon its fees. They perform market research, obsessively investigating review data and marketplace trends to figure out what’s going to be popular on the platform next. (Recent red-hot third-party product types include miniature waffle-makers, reading lights that drape around your neck, and dog puzzles.) They handle customer service. They exert downward price pressure on one another, and they absorb a lot of risk (dozens of dog-puzzle sellers fail so that one may thrive). No matter what happens to them, whether their own businesses succeed or fail, Amazon makes money. This is a great deal for Amazon, and over the years it has become Amazon’s main deal — in 2021, the company estimated that activities on its marketplace created “more than 1.8 million U.S. jobs” and shared success stories from its hundreds of thousands of American sellers, some of whom had become millionaires. It was a slow and, in hindsight, astounding transformation in which the “everything store” substantially outsourced its store.

The Power of Digital Marketing in the Modern Business Landscape
In the era of digital transformation, the way businesses market their products and services has evolved dramatically. Traditional marketing methods are no longer sufficient to reach and engage today’s tech-savvy consumers. Instead, digital marketing has emerged as the cornerstone of modern marketing strategies. This comprehensive article explores the various facets of digital marketing, its core components, and the profound impact it has on businesses.
Understanding Digital Marketing
What is Digital Marketing?
Digital marketing refers to the use of digital channels, platforms, and technologies to promote and sell products or services. It encompasses a wide range of activities, including search engine optimization (SEO), content marketing, social media marketing, email marketing, pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, and more. The primary goal of digital marketing is to connect with potential customers online, where they spend a significant portion of their time.
The Evolution of Digital Marketing
Digital marketing has its roots in the early days of the internet, but it has rapidly evolved with advancements in technology. The proliferation of smartphones, social media platforms, and high-speed internet has revolutionized how businesses reach and interact with their audiences. Today, digital marketing is data-driven, highly targeted, and capable of delivering personalized experiences to consumers.
Core Components of Digital Marketing
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
SEO is the practice of optimizing a website to rank higher on search engine results pages (SERPs). By improving the visibility of a website on search engines like Google, businesses can attract organic traffic from users actively searching for relevant products or services. SEO involves keyword research, on-page optimization, link building, and technical SEO.
Content Marketing
Content marketing focuses on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience. This can include blog posts, articles, videos, infographics, eBooks, and more. The goal is to provide valuable information that addresses the needs and interests of the target audience, thereby establishing the business as a trusted authority in its industry.
Tumblr media
Social Media Marketing
Social media marketing involves using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others to promote products and engage with customers. Businesses can create and share content, run paid advertising campaigns, and interact with their audience in real-time. Social media marketing helps build brand awareness, foster customer loyalty, and drive website traffic.
Email Marketing
Email marketing is the process of sending targeted emails to a list of subscribers. It is a powerful tool for nurturing leads, promoting products, and building relationships with customers. Effective email marketing campaigns include personalized messages, promotional offers, newsletters, and automated workflows to keep the audience engaged.
Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising
PPC advertising is a model where businesses pay a fee each time their ad is clicked. Platforms like Google Ads and Bing Ads allow businesses to create ads that appear on search engine results pages or partner websites. PPC campaigns are highly targeted, enabling businesses to reach potential customers based on keywords, demographics, and interests.
Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing involves partnering with third-party websites or influencers to promote products in exchange for a commission on sales generated through their referrals. This strategy leverages the reach and influence of affiliates to expand a business’s customer base.
Analytics and Data
Digital marketing relies heavily on data and analytics to measure the effectiveness of campaigns. Tools like Google Analytics, social media insights, and email marketing analytics provide valuable information on user behavior, campaign performance, and return on investment (ROI). By analyzing this data, businesses can make informed decisions and optimize their marketing strategies.
The Impact of Digital Marketing on Businesses
Increased Reach and Visibility
One of the most significant advantages of digital marketing is its ability to reach a global audience. Unlike traditional marketing methods limited by geography, digital marketing allows businesses to connect with potential customers anywhere in the world. This increased reach translates to higher visibility and brand recognition.
Cost-Effectiveness
Digital marketing is often more cost-effective than traditional marketing. Many digital marketing strategies, such as SEO and content marketing, require minimal financial investment compared to print ads, TV commercials, or billboards. Additionally, digital marketing campaigns can be scaled to fit any budget, making it accessible to businesses of all sizes.
Tumblr media
Enhanced Targeting and Personalization
Digital marketing enables businesses to target specific demographics, interests, and behaviors. This level of precision allows for highly personalized marketing messages that resonate with individual consumers. Personalized marketing not only improves customer engagement but also increases conversion rates and customer loyalty.
Real-Time Engagement and Interaction
Social media platforms and other digital channels allow businesses to engage with their audience in real-time. This immediate interaction helps build stronger relationships with customers and fosters a sense of community around the brand. Real-time engagement also allows businesses to respond quickly to customer feedback and address any issues promptly.
Measurable Results
One of the key benefits of digital marketing is its measurability. Businesses can track the performance of their campaigns in real-time, using various metrics such as website traffic, conversion rates, click-through rates, and more. This data-driven approach enables continuous improvement and ensures that marketing efforts are aligned with business goals.
Challenges and Future Trends in Digital Marketing
Keeping Up with Technological Advancements
The digital marketing landscape is constantly evolving, with new technologies and platforms emerging regularly. Businesses must stay updated with the latest trends and tools to remain competitive. This requires ongoing learning and adaptation.
Data Privacy and Security
With the increasing reliance on data for personalized marketing, businesses must prioritize data privacy and security. Adhering to regulations like GDPR and ensuring transparent data practices are crucial to maintaining customer trust.
The Rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
AI is transforming digital marketing by enabling more sophisticated data analysis, personalization, and automation. AI-powered tools can predict customer behavior, optimize ad targeting, and enhance customer experiences. As AI technology continues to advance, its role in digital marketing will likely expand.
Voice Search and Visual Search
Voice search and visual search are gaining popularity, driven by the widespread use of smart speakers and mobile devices. Businesses need to optimize their digital content for these new search methods to remain relevant and accessible to consumers.
Conclusion
Digital marketing is an indispensable component of modern business strategy. Its ability to reach a global audience, deliver personalized experiences, and provide measurable results makes it a powerful tool for driving growth and success. While the digital marketing landscape presents challenges, staying informed and adapting to new trends will ensure businesses continue to thrive in the digital age. Investing in digital marketing is not just about staying competitive; it's about seizing opportunities to connect with customers in meaningful ways and building a sustainable future.

hello everyone, annoying spaniard here!!! these last few days i've been stressing over assignments so i didn't have time or will to post one of these, but i'm back and this post is gonna be a bit longer so yay!
if you don't know what i'm doing, i'm just playing pokemon scarlet and violet and commenting on any references to my culture i come across :) here's my previous post btw
let's start with porto marinado's marketplace!! markets are big in spain, they can be found all throughout the country and i feel there's not a single market that served as inspiration for the paldean one, below i'll just add the ones i know the most / the most representative ones: the la cebada and san miguel markets in madrid, the la boquería market in barcelona, and the central market in valència
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
staying on this topic, i also really like kofu as a gym leader and specifically as a chef! as you could already imagine by looking at paldea, food is incredibly important in spain, it is part of our cultural identity and it plays a huge part in almost every aspect of daily life. there's 283 michelin stars in the country, and spanish chefs have won the title of best chefs in the world on numerous occasions. cooking shows are very popular, and in most of them there's always a section where the chef goes to the market to get fresh produce, just like kofu does! his personality reminds me a lot of famous tv chef karlos arguiñano, while his design is more similar to chef josé andrés, an incredible human being who's done a lot of humanitarian aid around the world and who recently got awarded with a honorific plaque in kyiv by ukrainian president zelensky as well as with the order of honor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i've already commented on this but i hadn't seen the actual postal office building until now; the colour of mail service here is yellow, just like in the games :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i found a new restaurant which means new food yay!!!
Tumblr media
the first dish is just pintxos, similar to tapas but make them basque, and that area is really big on fish and seafood so it makes sense than their pokemon counterpart also has them!
even if arroz con leche is usually associated with argentina, it actually originated in spain and it is a traditional dessert still handmade in rural areas and widely consumed all over the country
ceviche is peruvian!
the fourth dish is probably a reference to espetos
the fifth is just pasta lol
even though levincia is 100% inspired in valència, both because of its location and its modern / technological look (also its name), the business area looks like it took inspiration on the cuatro torres business area and the AZCA district in madrid, the heart of business stuff in the country.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(btw the four towers in the pic are now five so much closer to their pokémon counterparts)
also as a quick note i find very funny the fact that the largest company in paldea seems to be a construction one, as the 2008 spanish economic crisis started (among other factors) due to the high speculation within that sector lol
Tumblr media
i also find iono a hilarious concept for a paldean gym leader cause streamers are actually very popular in spain, i would say most young people (including myself) follow at least one streamer, and just looking at the top streamers list for november 2022, i'm counting 4 spanish streamers in the top 50 of the world. spanish youtubers are pretty high in the hispanic twitch community and for what i've seen on the internet recently younger latines are beginning to associate spain with twitch and streamers which lol. and of course, i cannot talk about spanish streamers without talking about ibai llanos, probably the most influential person to young people right now in the country (and a pretty good influence that is); he has the 4th most-followed twitch channel in the world, he's won the streamer of the year award in 2020 and 2021, held many irl events that have broken twitch view records, and has managed to rival mainstream television. in fact, spanish television seems to hold an absurd grudge against streamers and sees them as direct competitors, it's all very bizarre and makes all of iono's thing even funnier.
Tumblr media
also - and i realise this is only a thing that happens in the spanish version of the game but it brought me immense joy and i wanted to share it with you - all of iono's lines and in general all of her gym was full of references to twitter memes and basically internet slang, it was both delightful and painful. here are some of my favorites:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
she would say 'hacer la combatición' ('do the fightation') instead of 'combatir' ('fight'), and this is a reference to twitter slang; instead of saying 'morir' ('die') people would just type 'hacer la morición' ('do the diation'). it's just a funny and nonsensical way of saying it, that's it. also i've said this irl so it's one of those expressions capable of jumping outside of the internet into everyday vocabulary
at one point she calls you 'monstro/a' ('monster'), which is an expression the singer and celebrity rosario flores uses during the the voice auditions (she's a coach there) a lot, to the point it became a meme.
this one made me holler because it is one of my favourite expressions and one i use all the time... anyways when you defeat this trainer (i believe he's the first one?) he says 'emosido ganados' ('we have been beaten'). the correct way of writing that phrase is 'hemos sido ganados', and it is a reference to this graffitti which has become a staple in the twitter reaction meme repertoire ('emosido engañado' reads 'we have been fooled', the correct way of writing it is 'hemos sido engañados'). i unfortunately also say this one irl from time to time rip me
and that's all for this post!! i hope you liked it!
here's next post :)

💍, 👠, and 🌈...for the ask game 🤭🤭🤭
WOAH these are such good questions, thanks for sending!
💍: Within my world, there are seven major countries and six known nations, so luxury items may vary from region to region! There are of course all the typical luxuries sought after from the more capitalistic nations such as precious minerals and gemstones. For example, in Gormcairn silk is indicative of high status because of how expensive its material is to purchase and work with, and is generally only worn by the upperclass.
On the flipside, there are cultures boast high populations of magic users and as a result, heavily covet certain physical items that boost certain magic rituals or physical items. I know this is a bit odd because the question specified 'luxury,' but I feel like elaborating a bit more, so here we go. When I first began conceptualizing the world for example, I imagined that the horndust from unicorns, or more specifically, yeti antlers were an invaluable treasure for a multitude of reasons:
The aforementioned species are rare (they live in an isolated continent that's the equivalent of this world's Antartica)
Yetis are a sentient species that highly value their antlers for both practical and social reasons (the ability to channel magic, attract mates, etc. etc.)
Of all magic enhancers out there, yeti answers are unreasonably effective for reasons others have yet to discern yet
In short, you just don't just get yeti antlers anywhere purely because of how inaccessible they are, and the ethics that entail retrieving it. Question of morality aside (for those that are able to stomach it), the effort of attaining one is more of a pain in the ass than it's worth. The slimmest chance you're ever to find a yeti antler on the more temporal continents is via postage on particular black markets, and on the off chance that you are able to find one, it costs nothing short of not just an arm and leg but also a good number of your internal organs. It is an item boasted only by the shadiest and wealthy; anyone selling something like that is aware of the jaw-dropping price for such an item and is no doubt milking that for all it's worth. I imagine if there were ever a list for priciest (illegal) items, it's making top ten with relative ease.
👠: The world I've crafted (which I refer to as the Ouroverse for the time being) is a fantasy-orientated one, they lack suuuper super modern technology such as internet and cellphones and computers and whatnot, but they're far from being in the middle ages. The more earthbound species will travel via train, hot-air balloon or even in the more steampunk-esque blimps of sorts which essentially function as early airplanes. There are of course ships and cruisers as well, and horse drawn carriages and the like. The creatures that are also capable of flight (such as the dragons, pegasi and peryton) will travel as such.
🌈: No idea if there's anything in particular I've been waiting someone to ask me. I will simply say I haven't scratched the tip of the iceberg yet in regards to what I've had in my mind for this world I literally refer to it as my little 'worldbuilding beast.' Just a bigggg dump universe for essentially creating an entire planet and its creatures within from the ground up. In the near future I intend to create documents underlining the history, the politics, the conflicts and struggle of each nation and country and the species therein that it cannot be contained into a single doc and will span 15 of them, actually. I'm insane, I know.

Genloss was amazing. I already made a post about it when it happened, but I have so much more to say. Like I think this is going to be my longest post yet kind of more to say.
So, first of all, Ranboo's character design. I'm going to call the Ranboo before the urn broke and he awakened(?) before!boo, or just b!boo. b!boo is very interesting. For starters, the moment he woke up and noticed that he was wearing the mask, he tried to pry it off. which i found strange, though i don't know why. the mask itself, also, wasn't all glowy before he awakened(?). The glowy level of the mask, I think, is measuring how aware he is of his situation and, frankly, the strangeness of it. Maybe it's just Ranboo being Ranboo, but it is a bit strange that he just went along with whatever was going on and adapted to his surroundings. b!boo was just trying to leave. back to the glowy mask. It was off for b!boo and on for Ranboo and was flashing during the TV bits. And when the urn was knocked over, the button we pushed was "haunt." like there was some kind of spirit turning off Ranboo's awareness. And the hand that actually pushed it over had something green on it, that I see after rewatching some segments (now available on the ranboovods channel!). Like slimecicle or his ghouls. In addition, when the urn fell, b!boo didn't seem to notice it at first, even though it did make a sound he should have heard right away. The showfall media logo on the back of the mask I found interesting too. this may just be a little easter egg or marketing, but it may also be implying that showfall media is in some way canon to the genloss universe. plus the little glowy lines on the mask are kind of reminiscent of cat whiskers, which was probably not intentional or at least not important but i find adorable. The mask, also, probably serves a purpose other than being a mask and possibly more than measuring his level of awareness as previously theorized. his voice is muffled under it and it frankly doesn't look very comfortable, making it inconvenient as a mask. also it seems somewhat odd to me that the aforementioned measuring device and the mask are the same object.
when b!boo touched the ashes that were in the urn, he panicked and shouted "no" repeatedly and awakening(?). when he saw the ashes at first though, he merely remarked that "that wasn't supposed to happen." almost like he realized that touching the ashes was going to awaken(?) him and he didn't want that to happen, he didn't want to lose his awareness. and when the newly awakened(?) ranboo was looking around, he gestured to the camer and referred to it as a "weird painting." and when he looked behind the curtain for the keys, a demon figure was visible. this might have been slime, but the horns seemed bigger and the whole thing odd of slime to do. although ranboo seemed surprised by the demon (or perhaps the thunder and lightning that showed simultaneously) he didn't seem to think it was odd at all. the tape of doctor jekyll and mister hyde was of course suspicious, and i don't think I need to tell you why.
I found it odd that the house seemed to be arranged in one long line. likely just for ease of filming, but the arrangement seems to be canon thanks to camera moving through the wall during the period where ranboo was. sleeping. this in addition to the "basement" being at one end and the "attic" at the other. and then there was the dollhouse in the basement. some people were saying things about jerma? i don't know that much about him, honestly, or that stream he did (no offense intended i am new to the internet) but it's intersting how the lock was it the bed and the cabin is arranged like a dollhouse too. I also find it a matter of interst that RAnboo desdribed the basement as "well-lit."
the boss fights were weird. like i know they could have made the fighting more realistic and all, but with the layout of the house and the INCREDIBLY strange cooking show and the finidng the keys to open the door in the first room, it just looks like a video game. and just the way everyone acts and everything.
but one last things (i will almost definitely make additions to this)
during the cooking show, when ranboo was bieng threatened with pocket dimentiosn, he mentiosdf that hed been to the forest bvefore. a forest oly b!boo went too. so i dont know what to make of that, frankly. bye.

Digital marketing info!
Certainly! Digital marketing encompasses a wide range of strategies and tactics aimed at promoting products or services using digital channels. Here's a beginner's guide to digital marketing:
Understanding Digital Marketing: Digital marketing refers to any marketing effort that uses electronic devices and the internet. It includes various channels such as search engines, social media, email, websites, and mobile apps.
Key Components of Digital Marketing:

Become a Digital Marketing Pro: Learn the Basics NOW!
What is Digital Marketing?
Digital Marketing refers to the marketing of products and services of a company or business through digital channels such as search engines, websites, email, social media, mobile apps, etc. It involves the use of electronic devices and the internet. Digital marketing is often referred to as online marketing, internet marketing or web marketing.
Digital marketing mainly comprises Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Social Media Optimization (SMO), and Search Engine Marketing (SEM). We can say that it can be divided into three parts SEO, SMO, and SEM. However, Email Marketing and Affiliate Marketing have also become important components of digital marketing over the past few years. So, in digital marketing, we mainly deal with the following components:
SEO
SMO
SEM
Email Marketing
Affiliate Marketing
Tumblr media
Why choose Digital Marketing?
Non-Digital Marketing, which is the traditional means of marketing, includes the usage of physical means of marketing. These are generally in the form of physical prints such as posters, flyers, newspaper advertisements, and billboards. Even at the first glance, it is quite apparent why almost every business is choosing to get into Digital Marketing.
The primary and the most fundamental reasoning for this is the amount of reach that is possible with it. There are smart devices everywhere, from televisions, laptops, computers, and tablets to smartphones. Even cars have smart systems enabled in them where you can access the Internet. All of these facilities present a blank canvas for advertising your brand.
Tumblr media
How does Digital Marketing work?
There are two ways in which Digital Marketing is implemented by brands and businesses:
B2C (Business to Customer)
B2B (Business to Business)
B2C (Business to Customer):
When a brand or a company has to sell a product or service to individual customers. In fact, 95 percent of the time, the ads and marketing that you see online are examples of B2C campaigns, e.g., an ad for a candy bar, a promotional video for a safety razor, or a movie trailer. All of these marketing efforts are targeting individual consumers and not organizations.
B2B (Business to Business):
B2B is conducted for very specific products. You wouldn’t generally see B2B products being advertised on platforms with traffic from the everyday crowd. These marketing campaigns are low profile, professional, and in most cases, marketed directly (or pitched) to the client. This client can be a small business or a corporate giant. We can take heavy-duty cooking machinery used in big fast-food restaurants as an example. What would be the point of running a TV ad for an industry-level chimney? None. This sort of marketing is done through B2B-specialized salesmen who use custom-made marketing material, PowerPoint presentations, and word of mouth to pitch their product.
Tumblr media
Not surprisingly, billions of marketing dollars spent on traditional channels is already starting to shift to digital marketing campaigns and this will continue to increase as the Web matures.

Play to Profit
The Monetization of the Gaming Community
Gaming communities have long been on the same page with shared joy, camaraderie, and the love of gameplay. However, as the gaming industry evolves, substantial transformation is noticeable. The question arises: Are gaming communities gradually pivoting from being about play to becoming driven by money? In this blog, we delve into the changing dynamics within gaming communities, exploring how the desire for profit reshapes the nature of gaming.
The Emergence of Monetization Platforms
Tumblr media
The rise of streaming platforms like Twitch has undeniably altered the landscape of gaming communities (Nucciarelli et al. 2017). Initially conceived as a platform for gamers to share their experiences, Twitch has evolved into a cash cow for many. The introduction of features like channel subscriptions, donations, and ad revenue has spawned a new breed of content creators—entrepreneurial gamers seeking financial gains. While these platforms provide opportunities for streamers to monetize their passion, some streamers like CDawgVA host Charity Streams where all proceeds of the stream go to charity (Shrivastava 2023).
E-Sports and the Commercialization Wave
Tumblr media
E-sports, once shunned upon, has now exploded onto the mainstream scene, bringing both recognition and commercialization (Hou, Yang & Panek 2020). The mass marketing of e-sports events has transformed competitive gaming into a multi-billion-dollar industry where sponsorships, advertising deals, and massive prize pools have become the norm (Abanazir 2021). With the increase in momentum of internet usage, evolution of technology backed by the increase in viewership of Esports online due to the pandemic, this has led to its rise in growth (Yue, Rui & Chiang 2020).
The Gamification of Monetization within Games
In-game purchases, microtransactions, and virtual currencies have become common features in gaming today. While these elements contribute to the revenue stream for game developers, they have also reshaped the dynamics of gaming communities (Anderson, 2018). The gamification of monetization introduces a commercial nature into the gaming experience, blurring the lines between play and profit. In this case, players are not just participants; they are consumers in a virtual marketplace. This shift challenges the traditional idea of gaming as a leisure activity driven by a love for play.
Conclusion
Overall, it can be seen that the nature of gaming has gradually been commercialized. While economic opportunities are prevalent, it is important to preserve the core values that define gaming cultures: fun, joy, and good gameplay (Jones, 2020). Striking a balance between play and profit is crucial to ensure that gaming communities remain vibrant and true to their roots. As monetization continues to weave its way into the gaming scene, maintaining the essence of shared joy, enthusiasm, and genuine connection is key to preserving the unique and cherished spirit of gaming communities.
