"Media Evolution and the Changing World"
How important it is to study the evolution of media?
Tumblr media
It is important to check the evolution of media so as to grasp how change in technology changes society. once you consider the analogue media technology of the 20th century it gives you an understanding of the differences between the society of the published era and our current situation. It's easier to determine how particular ideas and values may be so dominant after you understand how expensive and complex mass media was. This centralized control of the media. Alternative viewpoints did not have access.
The age of the tribes or the tribal age (1500 BC – 1500 AD)
“In tribal age hearing is believing” Tribal age is that the first period in history, as per McLuhan. within the Tribal Age, Ear is that the most vital sensory organ for obtaining information. It enables people to instantly receive information. All-round sound quality also promoted the community, and language was mainly a community experience. The sound feel isn't conducive to privatization; because you whisper or whisper directly into someone’s ear in order that others can’t hear it. Words with no substantive meaning, direct and vivid, only exist at the instant of hearing, because this era requires personal and intimate interaction, and hearing plays a key role during this era. this can be also called an acoustic era because the senses of hearing, touch, taste, and smell were way more strongly developed than the power to visualize. In natural situations, hearing is more important than seeing since it permits you to be all the more quickly mindful of your environmental elements. With sight, we are restricted to heading and distance. we will just detect what's obviously before us. On the off chance that a preying creature is behind us or taken cover behind a tree, we are pitifully unconscious without affectability to sound or smell. Hearing and smelling provides a feeling of that which we will not see, a big capacity within the Tribal age.
Tumblr media
The pre-Industrial Period/ Pre-Industrial age (Pre-1700’s)
Pre-industrial age or before 1700. Cave paintings or parietal art. Some theories suggest that cave paintings served as a means of communication, while others suggest that they served a religious or ceremonial purpose. Animals are a popular topic that produces the most amazing visuals, and the paintings are very similar across the world. Humans are typically shown as hand stencils created by blowing pigment onto a hand held against the wall. Clay tablets in Mesopotamia are written on a wet clay tablet and then dried in the sun or air. If they are done writing on the tablet they can erase it and make a new one out of it.
Papyrus paper was used for writing in ancient Egypt, and it may also refer to a text written on sheets of such material that are connected side by side and wrapped up into a scroll, which is an early form of a book.
In Rome, the Acta diurnal was used for public notices and announcements such as births, weddings, and deaths. Legal, municipal, and military notifications were among the other types of Acta. Only officials were allowed to access Dibao, which included official notifications and news. They declare it orally or in writing. Handwritten or engraved wooden blocks were used to print them.
Codices Maya Professional scribes working under the patronage of deities such as the Tonsured Maize God and the Howler Monkey Gods produce folding books.
Tumblr media
Industrial Age (1700's - 1930's)
Between the late 18th and early 20th centuries, the Industrial Revolution saw tremendous development in mechanization, industrial output, and societal transformation.
New technologies have greatly increased the speed with which people and commodities may be transported. Between Liverpool and Manchester, the first intercity railway was completed in 1830. The railways made it possible to carry more freight at a lower cost and in a shorter amount of time. Traveling from London to Manchester took four days in 1700, but only four hours in 1870.
The use of steam engines. The steam engine's development was crucial to the Industrial Revolution's success. It enabled steam trains, as well as steam-powered pumps and machinery, increasing labor productivity.
The Agricultural Revolution made it possible to produce more food with fewer farm laborers, resulting in excess employees who could work in industries. Crop rotation, selective breeding, economies of scale from larger farms, and improved transportation all contributed to this agricultural revolution.
Global commerce expansion. Britain's excellent shipping capability and Empire, which provided raw materials, aided them.
Tumblr media
The Electronic Age: (1930s – 1980s)
The industrial age and the electronic age are two different periods of civilizations. These civilizations are thought of in schools as part of the curriculum in basic computer study in Junior secondary schools. This article covers all that students need to know concerning the industrial age and electronic age.
The industrial age is a period of social and economic reorganization. Remember the stone age, the period when crude tools were used. During the stone age, production was done by the exertion of human efforts.
Although industry and machinery are an important part of today's world production. Another important factor was considered in the late 1950s. This vital factor of production, also known as the digital revolution, is known as the electronic age.
The electronic age is also called the information age or digital age. It started in the 1970s and continues to this day. This is a stage of transition from a traditional industry to an information-based economy.
The electronic age is the information age, and electrical switches make it possible. Today can no longer be fully described as the electronic age. We can classify this time as Internet of Things (IoT) time. Because we are gradually relying on robots and machines to perform functions previously performed by humans.
With the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning, machines can learn human emotions. This enables them to make decisions that humans should make, thereby supporting production.
Tumblr media
Information Age (1900s- 2000)
The Information Age refers to the idea that information availability and control are the distinguishing characteristics of this new phase in human history. The development of personal computers ushered in the Information Age, also known as the Electronic Age, Digital Age, and New Media Age. The "information era" began in the 1980s. Big businesses used mainframe computers, which allowed them to handle information (although laboriously) and perhaps make it available. That lasted until Google came up. Google performed something unique in history: they "broke" Goodhart's rule. That is, their sole metric for determining the relevance of a web page became a target, which Goodhart claims indicates it is no longer a quality metric. They become authoritative after a few years of excellent programming, a tidy model, great luck, timing, and a fanatical concentration on search quality. That was the Information Age's final game—Google won and received a little reward from the whole planet for making the world's information available for free. Now we're approaching a new era with unrestricted access to information, the ability to construct virtual worlds, machines that are smarter than people, and sci-fi like robotics, among other things.

Halogen Levels in Earth-Forming Meteorites Lower Than IoT and M2M Connectvity Previously Thought
www.inhandnetworks.com
Researchers have found the halogen levels in the meteorites that formed the Earth billions of years ago are much lower than previously thought.
The research was carried out by international team of researchers, led by the Universities of Manchester and Oxford, and has been published in Nature.
Halogens such as Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine, form naturally occurring salts which are essential for most life forms – but too much can prohibit life. When previously comparing halogen levels in meteorites that formed the planet, the Earth should have unhealthy levels of salt.
Many theories have been put forward to explain the mystery Cellular modem   of why, instead, Earth salt concentrations are ‘just right’ remote PLC programming  . The answer turns out to be quite simple – previous estimates meteorites were just too high.
Using a new analytical technique, the team looked at different kinds of chondrite meteorites, a type of primitive meteorite approximately 4.6 billion years old.
Dr Patricia Clay, lead author of the study from the University of Manchester’s School of Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES), said: “These kinds of meteorites are remnants of the solar nebula, a molecular cloud made up of interstellar dust and hydrogen gas that predates our Solar System. Studying them provides important clues for our understanding of the origin and age of the Solar System.”
How the Earth acquired its volatile elements has long interested scientists. To answer the question the team re-examined one of the largest collection of meteorites assembled for this type of study.
“No single model of Earth formation using the old meteorite measurements could easily account for the halogens we see today. Some of these models needed catastrophic planetary wide removal of halogens without affecting related elements – which just didn’t make sense.” Dr Patricia Clay, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences
They found that previous estimates of halogen levels in meteorites were too high, but the technique used by the team helped them avoid contaminated sources.
Dr Clay explains Industrial IoT Products  : “No single model of Earth formation using the old meteorite measurements could easily account for the halogens we see today. Some of these models needed catastrophic planetary wide removal of halogens without affecting related elements – which just didn’t make sense.”
Professor Ray Burgess, co-author and also from The University of Manchester, added: “The new simplified model we have developed is a big step forward in understanding how key ingredients essential for life were brought to our planet, including water that probably helped distribute the halogens between the planetary interior and surface.”
The results were a huge surprise, and time after time each meteorite measured was found to have halogen levels far lower than previously thought, and remarkably consistent between different types of meteorites.
Professor Chris Ballentine, co-author from the University of Oxford and who designed the study, added: “Another big surprise of the study was just how uniform the halogen content of very different meteorites actually is – this is an incredibly important picture into the processes that formed the meteorites themselves – but also means that whatever meteorites formed the earth the halogen ingredients for Earth’s recipe remains the same.”

Single’s Day kicks off ‘Peak Season’ mobile style
The ‘peak’ season is nearly upon us: this weekend’s Single’s Day on 11 November kicks things off and then we pretty much head into six weeks of peaks, as Black Friday now becomes a month long exercise. In fact, Wiggle has started already. And this year, mobile is going to play a really big part. Are you ready?
Let’s start with Single’s Day. This modern day cyber peak – which builds on a 1990s movement to create an ‘anti-Valentine’s Day’ for all the single people out there – on 11 November has increasingly seen sales online boom as people buy themselves and their single chums gifts. What has become interesting about Single’s Day here in the west is that Chinese shoppers are increasingly buying British goods (great news post-Brexit: we really need to build on this), because they perceive them to be of great quality.
This is a real fillip for the UK online retail space as it is slowly, year-by-year, producing a nice little sales peak.
And this peak is set to grow. As we report, a study by Royal Mail, more than half (55%) of shoppers in China bought items from British brands in a three month period, spending an average of £104 per month – with 79% of them shopping on mobile.
China’s e-commerce market is a busy place with the average online shopper spending £123 per month, compared to £89 in the UK. It’s set to get even busier. Three in four shoppers claim to have recently increased their rate of online shopping while confidence has risen 30% within two years. 79% of China’s shoppers make purchases via their smartphone (up from 70% in 2015), compared to 28% of UK shoppers.
This peak is set to grow year by year as more people buy more things and makes for a nice boost to sales in the run up to the Black Friday period.
What is interesting about the Royal Mail research is that so many people in China buy over mobile, both through apps and m-web. To capitalise on this, UK retailers need to be mobile ready. They also have to be ready to ship to China – but that’s another story.
This readiness for mobile retail isn’t just going to be driven by Chinese shoppers. This year’s peak season here in the UK is also shaping up to be mobile-led too. According to Astound Commerce’s “Competing For Customers During the Holidays and Beyond” – which surveyed 2000 customers from the US and Europe to unveil holiday shopping habits this season – a good quality mobile app or mobile web experience will cause four in ten consumers to make a purchase from a retailer, showing how mobile is becoming an ever-more vital part of the retail process.
While marketplaces, social media and more web-enabled bricks and mortar stores are also going to play a role, mobile is increasingly becoming central to the peak season shopping frenzy.
Of course, this is driven by the need to seek out and act on bargains as they happen, which mobile allows shoppers to do, but there is also the more subtle development that sees peak season encourage ever-more use of the mobile among shoppers. Each year more do it and then continue using it throughout the next 12 months.
This means that shopping slowly becomes a mobile pastime. And you need to be ready.
This readiness is going to involve many things. As we report, hero images on mobile sites – images that quickly and easily help users see what is for sale – are being pushed not only as a way to make sites convert better, but as something that should be standardised across m-commerce. Too many sales, especially in grocery, DIY and beauty are lost because images on mobile sites just aren’t up to the job that researchers at Unilever, in collaboration with by the Cambridge Engineering Design Centre and standards setters at the world’s leading standards body GS1 are pushing the idea hard.
Mobile retail is also going to involve lookin at how to add Virtual and Augmented reality to the shopping experience, through the mobile device. Amazon has added augmented reality features to its iOS app across Europe, allowing shoppers to view certain goods in place in their homes, and so has Ikea. And consumers are chomping at the bit for this kind of user experience. The majority of consumers (51%) say they expect to be offered better retail experiences than those currently available, according to a report commissioned by Manchester mixed reality business DigitalBridge examining the use of technology in retail.
Artificially intelligent chat agents and the Internet of Things (IoT) are also bringing more mobile-led pressure on retailers as consumers pick up their smartphone and expect all sorts of experiences. Some are getting this: Bank of Scotland is trialling AI-driven customer service through its app and Vodafone is making IoT available to all with its V service, but most retailers still have a long way to go. Let’s hope the mobile push of peak will inspire them to make 2018 a bumper year for mobile and customer experience.

Quick Guide to Digital Tech: Big Data
Overview
We do our shopping, our financial transactions and insurances policies online. We stream music and movies online and chat with our friends through social networks. Everyone of us leaves permanent data traces that can be analysed.
The term Big Data describes not only the data itself, but the ability to use it and mine insights from it. These insights we are able use to identify trends and patterns in previous and current behaviours, as well as to predict and thereby influence the future. The preferred outcome is an understanding of the world around us.
And we produce a lot of data. That much, that 90% of all data created since the dawn of mankind was created in the last two years alone. The amount every day should be around 58 million DVD’s if that picture helps us getting any closer. With the exponential growth curve that applies, we will have 45 zettabytes (ZB) of data in 2020 - well, you got it - much data.
The concept of analysing huge amounts of data is not new, but the speed at which this is done has changed dramatically. Johannes Kepler, the german astronomer found the three laws of planetary motion by analysing massive amounts of data. Data he inherited from his teacher Tycho Brahe and later laid the foundation to Newtons theory of universal gravitation. What we might call big data of the 17th century took the great scientist Kepler 9 years to compute.
Kepler had volumes and variety of data and had to question the veracity of his data, but the velocity was pretty manageable. Now imagine the velocity of Facebook and Twitter. When analysing data for insight discovery, we in terms of big data define it by the four V’s, which are:
Volume - the amount of data
Velocity - the speed at which data is generated
Variety - the kind of data available, and
Veracity - the trustworthiness of data
From these element we hope to be better at making decisions and optimise processes. Corporations have been early adapters of big data with Facebook, Netflix, Google and Amazon up in front seats. Real-time social media data, movie streaming behaviour, web search and shopping data, as well the fast growth of sensor data from smart connected devices and objects hold tremendous value for companies.
Innovations in artificial intelligence and machine learning accelerates the development even further. The ability to use big data to better understand customers, their behaviours, preferences and current use is used to create predictive models and optimise processes and experiences. Maintenance, supply chain and stock management, even human resource management can be optimised and marketing does already or will have to love it in the coming years. In the end all areas of the business can be optimised with big data and business leaders hoping to get help through data-driven decision making, and to get a tool to increase business results.
There are certainly some concerns with big data. First of all it can be very difficult to get insights out a constantly growing pool of data and many companies simply lack skilled people being able to do the analysis. If you job description today is data scientist or analyst, you will have a pretty safe job situation for years to come.
Second, interpretation of data can be inaccurate or victim of misinterpretation. There are examples like that of orange painted cars that have only half as many defects as average. That insight is an example of one that probably should be let alone.
Last but not least there are concerns in terms of security and privacy. Also when not intended for abuse or malicious use, companies, organisations and governments also hold a big responsibility storing peoples data and keep it safe from security breaches. People though seem increasingly willing to hand over their personal data in return for products and services that makes their lives easier. And honestly. When is the last time you read the terms and conditions of that online service before clicking the accept button? I for myself just did that on the 56-page long wall of text from iTunes - again.
The following examples will give a few ideas of data-driven decision making, insight discovery and process optimisation. There are endless possibilities, that make it difficult to categorise - here just a few:
Examples
Healthcare
Google Flu Report: initiated in 2009. People with the flu will probably go online to find information about treatments, so Google decided to track that behaviour, hoping it might be able to predict influenza outbreaks faster than conventional methods. These Google Flu Trends are often used as an example of big data done wrong, since the predictions proved to be anything but accurate. It still works as an early-warning signal, rather than a substitute for traditional data collection methods used.
Government / Law Enforcement
Modern day elections have catapulted the term big data up to front pages of non-tech media. The use both in terms of predictions and its role in the campaigns of political parties have been discussed intensively especially in recent months, but if you have the urge to refresh yourself I recommend this article by Wired Magazine.
Some police departments in the USA manage neighbourhood patrols based on big data for predictive policing.
Sports & Entertainment
Elite sports clubs: have embraced big data, by analysing the performance of competition and individual players. Top soccer clubs like Manchester City or Bayern Munich employ entire data analyst teams. Every running path, every tactical shift, and every freekick variant is tracked and analysed for coaches to be used for match-day preparations.
Netflix Series House of Cards: was an example of the use of big data to determine what viewers like to see, before the series was recorded. Netflix knew that the director David Fincher was popular among its audience, the actor Kevin Spacey had always done well on the platform, as had the British version of House of Cards. In the intersection of these three elements, Netflix’s decision to outbid their TV network competition was based on a ready-made audience for the show and showcases a great example of a company excelling at data-driven decision making.
Online Shopping
Amazon’s recommendations engine. Amazon found out that the best recommendations were not made by comparing customers to other customers, but to analyse the relationships between products customers previously bought or intensively engaged with on the Amazon platform. It is said that about 30% of all sales at Amazon are related to these recommendations, and if I look at my own history book section in my book shelf, I am guilty as charged.
Technology in general
IBM Watson: is fuelled by big data and algorithms and uses artificial intelligence and machine learning across industries, like health care, insurance, and manufacturing. IBM Watson came to fame for winning the TV quiz show Jeopardy in 2011. Cognitive computing is a big bet for IBM, with the Watson business unit having more than 10.000 workers and heavy investments. I recommend a NYT article to dig into that story or of you need more information on the term artificial intelligence, see a previous edition of this series about AI and machine learning.
The concept of Internet of Things (IoT): aims to take things and turn them into connected smart objects - anything from watches, to coffeemakers, cars and buildings. These sensor enabled objects gather huge amounts of data, that need big data analytics to allow us to gain insights. With the amount of IoT devises exploding in the coming years, big data will be essentials for hardware producers and platform providers a like, as well as for our experiences as consumers and co-creators. More on the Internet of Things in the quick guide series.
State of the technology and future outlook
Big data can seem like a somewhat abstract term that companies, people and business leaders struggle to get their heads around. What we see currently is expectations to gain value from big data is growing at a very fast pace, as are investment levels and complexity. As the tools and skill-sets to collect and analyse data becomes less expensive and more accessible, even better uses will be developed. Everything from healthcare, natural and social science to criminal prevention is possible. Marketing and advertising automation reminds us of the concerns, but hold tremendous value and opportunities for businesses, as do innovations in robotics, artificial intelligence, sensor technologies and micro computing.
It is often said that data is the new oil, and it is hard to argue against that. The difference though is still that we know exactly how to turn oil into fuel, and that is not the case yet for big data. But big data is here to stay, nothing will remain untouched. Potential is tremendous and will influence all parts of business, society and science. Businesses who excel at it will without doubt gains significant competitive advantages. They do together with organisations and governments also hold ethical responsibilities of keeping the data safe and use it in a sensible manner.
If we do that, we can master big data and with its help create a better world (or a better business if that is what you came for). If not big data will dominate us.

New Method Could smart grid sensor   Accelerate Graphene Production
www.inhandnetworks.com
This visualization shows layers of graphene used for membranes. (University of Manchester)
Engineers at the University of Exeter have developed a new cheap and simple mass production technique for graphene.
A team of engineers from Exeter’s Centre for Graphene Science have developed a new method for creating entire device arrays directly on the copper substrates used for the commercial manufacture of graphene. Complete and fully-functional devices can then be transferred to a substrate of choice, such as silicon, plastics or even textiles.
Professor David Wright, from Exeter’s Engineering department and one of the authors said: “The conventional way of producing devices using graphene can be time-consuming, intricate and expensive and involves many process steps including graphene growth, film transfer, lithographic patterning and metal contact deposition. Our new approach is much simpler and has the very real potential to open up the use of cheap-to-produce graphene devices for a host of important applications from gas and bio-medical sensors to touch-screen displays.”
To demonstrate the new process, the team have produced a flexible and completely transparent graphene-oxide based humidity sensor that would cost pennies to produce using common wafer-scale or roll-to-roll manufacturing techniques, yet can outperform currently available commercial sensors.
The new research features in the latest online edition of the Institute of Physics’ respected journal, 2D Materials.
Professor Monica Craciun, also from Exeter’s engineering department and co-author added: “The University of Exeter is one of the world’s l Industrial Wireless M2M gateway eading authorities on graphene, and this new research is just the latest step in our vision to help c Industrial VPN router  reate a graphene-driven industrial revolution. Graphene Paint Makes Impe secure web based scada   rmeable and Chemically Resistant Coatings
www.inhandnetworks.com

New research from the University of Manchester demonstrates how a thin layer of graphene paint can make impermeable and chemically resistant coatings, which could be used for packaging to keep food fresh for longer and protect metal structures against corrosion.
The surface of graphene, a one atom thick sheet of carbon, can be randomly decorated with oxygen to create graphene oxide; a form WiFi   of graphene that could have a significant impact on the chemical, pharmaceutical and electronic industries. Applied as paint, it could provide an ultra-strong, non-corrosive coating for a wide range of industrial applications.
Graphene oxide solutions can be used to paint various surfaces ranging from glass to metals to even conventional bricks. After a simple chemical treatment, the resulting coatings behave like graphite in terms of chemical and thermal stability but become mechanically nearly as tough as graphene, the strongest material known to man.
The team led by Dr Rahul Nair and Nobel laureate Sir Andre Geim demonstratedpower line sensor previously that multilayer films made from graphene oxide are vacuum tight under dry conditions but, if expose to water or its vapor, act as molecular sieves allowing passage of small molecules below a certain size. Those findings could have huge implications for water purification.
This contrasting property is due to the structure of graphene oxide films that consist of millions of small flakes stacked randomly on top of each other but leave nano-sized capillaries between them. Water molecules like to be inside these nanocapillaries and can drag small atoms and molecules along.
In an article published in Nature Communications this week, the University of Manchester team shows that it is possible to tightly close those nanocapillaries using simple chemical treatments, which makes graphene films even stronger mechanically as well as completely impermeable to everything: gases, liquids or strong chemicals. For example, the researchers demonstrate that glassware or copper plates covered with graphene paint can be used as containers for strongly corrosive acids.
The exceptional barrier properties of graphene paint have already attracted interest from many companies who now collaborate with The University of Manchester on development of new protective and anticorrosion coatings.
Dr Nair said “Graphene paint has a good chance to become a truly revolutionary product for industries that deal with any kind of protection either from air, weather elements or corrosive chemicals. Those include, for example, medical, electronics and nuclear industry or even shipbuilding, to name but the few.”
Dr Yang Su, the first author in this work added: “Graphene paint can be applied to practically any material, independently of whether it’s plastic, metal or even sand. For example, plastic films coated with graphene could be of interest for medical packaging to improve shelf life because they are less permeable to air and water vapor than conventional coatings. In addition, thin layers of graphene paint are optically transparent.”

Lyon vs. PSG: Former Champions Look to Close Gap On Ligue 1’s Runaway Leaders
www.inhandnetworks.com
Worry not, for natural order in French football has been restored. Monaco’s brief spell as champions in France looks to be swiftly coming to an end, as Paris Saint-Germain are back on top of Ligue 1 with a plumped-up 11-point cushion.
PSG, the moneymen across the channel, have won the domestic title for four of the last five seasons, and Unai Emery’s team is cantering toward a fifth. Monaco’s sensational campaign last season prevented PSG from closing in on the record of successive championships in Ligue 1, currently set at seven and held by Lyon.
The dominant force as French football settled into the 21st century, Lyon won the title every year from 2001-02 to 2007-08. In the years under Paul Le Guen and, then, Gerard Houllier, Lyon was the immovable object. But now they are on the other side of the field, tasked with turning this season into more of a competition.
Keep up with this story and more by subscribing now
On Sunday (January 21), Emery takes his team, made up of £199 million man Neymar Jr., French starlet Kylian Mbappe, and Edinson Cavani, on the 300-mile journey south to the Groupama Stadium. Lyon are third in Ligue 1, level on points with second-place Monaco, in the chase for PSG.
His chances appear slim having lost all of the past four meetings, with an aggregate score of 10-3. But, on closer inspection, the trip south has proved to be a difficult one for PSG: over the past four seasons, the club has only left Lyon with victory on one occasion and have been beaten twice.
This year, PSG meet Emery’s team in formidable form having dropped points in just three of their 20 league games so far this season. Lyon’s defense, which has not kept a clean sheet in the past three games, has the added concern of Mbappe and Neymar this season, but Cavani may be the biggest threat.

The Uruguayan striker is the leading scorer in Ligue 1 with a massive 19 goals in 20 games, an average of one goal every 81 minutes. Neymar’s nine assists this season have certainly helped Cavani’s tally.
Lyon’s threat comes from 24-year-old Spanish striker Mariano, who was developed at Real Madrid and signed in the summer for a fee of little over £7 million; it has proved to be a bargain. The striker has scored 13 goals in the league for Lyon and developed a smart partnership with former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay, who has eight goals and five assists to his name.
Lyon manager Bruno Genesio will be relying on the duo to be on their best form, as well as a resilient defense, should his team continue their impressive for at home to PSG and breathe some life into this Ligue 1 season.
