A team of researchers from the College of Engineering at Texas A&M University have developed a mechanically robust conductive coating that can maintain performance under heavy stretching and bending.
Stretchable, bendable and foldable electronics are crucial for the development of emerging technologies like adaptive displays, artificial skin, and biometric and wearable devices. This presents a unique challenge of balancing electronic performance and mechanical flexibility. The difficulty lies in finding a material that can withstand a wide array of deformations, like stretching, bending  Fault detection & location  and twisting, all while maintaining electrical conductivity. Adding to the challenge is the need for this conductivity to be engineered into a variety of different surfaces, such as cloth, fiber, glass or plastic.
A collaborative team from the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering led by Dr. Jodie Lutkenhaus , associate professor and holder of the William and Ruth Neely Faculty Fellowship, has solved this problem through the development of a new surface-agnostic stretchable, bendable and foldable conductive coating, opening the door for a wide variety of flexible electronics.
Two-dimensional metal carbides (MXenes) were chosen as the main focus of the research as previous research has shown them to have a metallic-like conductivity. The previous research on MXenes has focused primarily on the materials in the form of sheets. Although these sheets have the desired c VPN gateway  onductivity, they are not stretchable and their integration into different surfaces has not been shown.

Rather than using MXene sheets, the Texas A&M research team created MXene coatings through the sequential adsorption of negatively charged MXene sheets and positively charged polyelectrolytes using an aqueous assembly process known as layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly (See image 1-A). The results of this process, described in depth in the latest issue of Science Advances, demonstrate that MXene multilayer coatings that can undergo large-scale mechanical deformation while maintaining a high level of conductivity (see video). The team has also successfully deposited the MXene multilayer coatings onto flexible polymer sheet, stretchable silicones, nylon fiber, glass and silicon.

Android Nougat Updates For Samsung Galaxy S7, HTC 10, HTC One A9 & Sony Xperia Z5
Samsung is reportedly starting the regular rollout of Android Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge units. Aside from Samsung’s 2016 flag bearer, HTC One A9 and Sony Xperia Z5 should be able to start tasting the Nougat flavor as well.
The Inquisitr previously reported that Samsung has begun to slowly roll out the Android Nougat firmware, making it available first to Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge owners who participated in the beta program. And then yesterday, a report from GSM Arena, revealed that the Korean tech giant has allegedly canceled pushing out the firmware update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge units in China due to some bugs. This withdrawal seemed to follow HTC’s action days ago, which also stopped the release of the Nougat update for its HTC 10, citing bug issues as well.
Meanwhile, an updated post from Sam Mobile confirmed that Samsung is now rolling out the respective Android Nougat firmware for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge units. It also mentioned that the update seems to be available also for the non-beta testers. The publication also noted the following:
“We can confirm that the update is indeed rolling out, as one of our Galaxy S7 Edge’s has started receiving the update. At this time, it seems the update is only available in markets where Samsung had launched the beta program, so we’ll be hoping the company doesn’t make consumers in other regions wait too long.”
With this confirmation, it looks like Samsung is really fulfilling its statement before mentioning January 17 as the release date of the Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The firmware update, a 1.2GB-heavy one, was first seen in S7 Edge units in China and UK, according to the report.
As for news on the HTC 10’s Android Nougat rollout, which was stopped momentarily, a reliable tipster recently revealed a timeline as to when the Taiwanese manufacturer will resume its release. @LlabTooFer, via a Twitter post, advised HTC 10 owners to relax and wait as he shared that the Nougat update will be available again for the European and carrier models of the HTC 10 “within the next three weeks.” The Nougat update for the HTC 10 is also expected to come with the security patch for January.
HTC 10 (EU + carrier versions) to get Android N with January security patch within next 3 weeks. Relax and wait.
“System is much more stable and responsive comparatively to the previously released US Unlocked version. It was worth waiting more…,” the leakster also added.
Another HTC smartphone that should start receiving the Android Nougat update now is the HTC One A9. While HTC 10 is the company’s 2016 flag bearer, HTC One A9 is their mid-range offering that arrived at launch with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. And finally, its Nougat update is here!
The rollout started rolling out yesterday night in the U.S., as announced by HTC’s vice president of Product Management, Mo Versi, on his official Twitter account.
HTC One A9 Unlocked Owners! We have received technical approval on the Nougat OS update, and OTA will begin tonight!
Sony is also commencing to put the Android Nougat firmware out there for its Xperia devices a few days after cellular certification company PTCRB certified the Nougat firmware with build number 32.3.A.0.372 for Sony Xperia Z5, Z4 Tablet, and Z3 series. According to Xperia Blog, the firmware update is currently live for certain variants of the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Premium.
The firmware should be available via Over-The-Air process or it can also be accessed using the Xperia Companion app on PC. Make sure to have a strong Wi-fi connection to avoid any download and installation problems once the 1.3-GB Android Nougat firmware becomes ready for the Xperia device. Meanwhile, owners of other recent Xperia models, the Z5 Compact, Z3+ and Z4 Tablet, may not have to wait very long for the Nougat firmware to arrive.

Nougat update for Sony Xperia Z5/Z4 Tablet and Z3+ receives certification
Looks like the Nougat update for Sony's Xperia Z5/Z4 Tablet and Z3+ series devices will soon be rolled out. That's because the update has been certified by PTCRB (a wireless device certification forum led by North American mobile operators). The update will move the build number from 32.2.A.5.11 to version 32.3.A.0.372. Sadly, there's currently no information on exactly when the roll out will begin, but given that the update has started collecting necessary certifications, that should happen sooner than later. Researchers Measure Wave Particle Energy Transfer router industrial   in Collisionless Space Plasma
www.inhandnetworks.com
Electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves are generated by the instability of hydrogen ions and cause nearby helium ions to accelerate.
The Earth’s magnetosphere contains plasma, an ionized gas composed of positive ions and negative electrons. The motion of these charged plasma particles is controlled by electromagnetic fields. The energy transfer processes that occur in this collisionless space plasma are believed to be based on wave-particle interactions such as particle acceleration by plasma waves and spontaneous wave generation, which enable energy and momentum transfer.
However, while the coexistence of waves with accelerated particles in the magnetosphere has been studied for many years, the gradual nature of the interactions between them has made observation of these processes difficult. Detection of local energy transfer between the particles and the fields is therefore required to enable quantitative assessment of their interactions.
Researchers from Nagoya University’s Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE) are part of a research team that have performed ultrafast measurements using four Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft to evaluate the energy transfer that occurred during interactions associated with electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. “We observed that the ion distributions were not symmetrical around the magnetic field direction but were in fact in phase with the plasma wave fields,” states Nagoya University’s Masafumi Shoji.
The energy transfer process from the hydrogen ions to the helium ions occurs via wave-particle interactions.
The high-time-resolution measurements provided by the MMS spacecraft were combined with composition-resolved ion meas industrial wireless  urements to demonstrate the simultaneous occurrence of two energy transfers. The first energy transfer was from hot anisotropic hydrogen ions to an ion cyclotron wave via a cyclotron resonance process, while the second transfer was from the cyclotron wave to helium ions, which took place via a nonresonant interaction and saw the cold He+ ions being accelerated to energies of up to 2 keV.
“This represents direct quantitative evidence of the occurrence of collisionless energy transfer between two distinct particle populations via wave-particle interactions,” says Yoshizumi Miyoshi from Nagoya University’s ISEE. “Measurements of this type will even provide the capability to identify the types of wave-particle interactions that are occurring.” The team’s findings were rec industrial m2m  ently published in Science.
It is hoped that this research represents a major step towards a quantitative understanding of the wave-particle interactions and energy transfer between particle populations in space plasma. This would have implications for our understanding of a wide variety of space plasma phenomena, includ IoT PLC accessing the Van Allen radiation belt, geomagnetic storms, auroral particle precipitation, and atmospheric loss from planets, such as the loss of oxygen ions from Earth’s atmosphere.

Bureau Veritas Partners With Advantech to Obtain Its First NEBS Certification
Successful compliance testing of Advantech SKY carrier grade servers paves the way for Taiwanese manufacturers to expand their footprint into the North American telecom market
TAOYUAN CITY, Taiwan, Jan. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Bureau Veritas has announced that it has partnered with Advantech successfully to obtain its first Network Equipment Building System (NEBS) certificate for the US market from a Taiwanese lab. Bureau Veritas, a Verizon Authorized Test Lab for NEBS, is a global leader in testing & certification of consumer and technology products whilst Advantech is a leading player in network computing platforms.
Equipment used in telecommunications networks is increasingly being transformed into Network Function Virtualization (NFV) infrastructure running on standard computer server technology. Adhering to standards and requirements such as NEBS for the North American market is essential for suppliers competing in this new, fast evolving market. NFV offers the potential of massive infrastructure economies to Communication Service Providers (CSPs) and is triggering an upswing in demand for NEBS-compliant servers needed in brownfield telecom central office environments as well as locations closer to users and devices at the edge of the network.
In response to growing demand for NFV NEBS-certified computing platforms, Advantech recently developed its new SKY-8000 server product line, targeting the market for mid and high-end carrier grade servers, designed for reliability, availability, maintainability and safety.
"The transformation of specialized equipment into a fabric of servers, switches, storage, and I/O running open source software opens up new opportunities for equipment manufacturers developing NEBS-certified products for the telecommunications market," said Ween Niu, General Manager, Advantech Networks and Communications Group. "Close cooperation between Advantech's Taipei design teams and the Bureau Veritas lab not only streamlines the whole certification process, but it helps pass on important cost and time-to-market advantages to our telecom customers."
"Bureau Veritas CPS E&E Taiwan is the only Verizon GR-1089 approved third party lab in Asia," said Mr. Tarik Mahammed, Vice President of the Electrical and Electronic Business Line in Asia for Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services Division. "As a leading NEBS testing service provider, our skilled engineers deliver customer-aligned solutions addressing all the risks with today's challenging environment. During our partnership with Advantech we reached a common understanding that we will collaborate further to support the Taiwan industry enabling locally designed and developed network equipment to reach not just the North American market, but global markets."
The total NEBS test solution covers EMC, safety and environmental testing. To verify the stability of equipment installed in a carrier's network, environmental testing is a critical component of NEBS. Unlike traditional safety standards, NEBS standards covers the personal safety of the equipment operator and service technician, and protects the network facilities to verify the integrity and stability of the overall telecommunications network. Today NEBS is widely accepted by the major telecom carriers across the United States.
"Advantech has been manufacturing network computing platforms in CPCI, ATCA and server form factors designed to meet NEBS standards for over 10 years. We have always worked closely with our Telecom Equipment Manufacturer customers during their NEBS certification process," said Betty Yang, Product Manager, Advantech Network Infrastructure Division. "With the advent of NFV, many of our customers are now partnering with us and rely on Advantech to undertake the NEBS certification process for them."
Jim Chiu, Sales Manager, Electrical & Electronic Business Line Taiwan of Bureau Veritas CPS stated, "At the start of a project such as this, we always provide market access/ technical insight to customers concerning the essential testing requirements for them to take into account. In this case, the EMC testing stipulated by NEBS is different to general EMC testing with products going through more specific EMC testing. We worked closely with Advantech's engineering teams at the commencement of this project meaning they took this into account during the product R&D phase and avoided non-compliances and project delays."
About NEBS
NEBS is an industry standard established by the telecommunication carriers in USA. It has become an essential criteria for them when purchasing telecom equipment destined for central offices, specific outside plant applications and in certain cases for customer premises equipment. NEBS-certified equipment demonstrates a quality and reliability assurance to meet strict network operability and safety requirements.

Pre-Reptile Bunostegos Akokanensisear &# credit card vending machine  8211; Earliest Known Creature to Walk Upright on All Fours
www.inhandnetworks.com
Bunostegos akokaensis: About the same size as a cow, this pre-reptile also stood the same way — upright with its legs underneath. It may be the earliest known creature to do so, according to a new study. Drawings: Morgan Turner
According to a new study from Brown University, the pre-reptile Bunostegos akokanensis the oldest known creature to have walked upright on all fours, roam dsl  ing the ancient supercontinent of Pangea about 260-million years ago.
A newly published analysis of the bones of Bunostegos akokanensis, a 260-million-year-old pre-reptile, finds that it likely stood upright on all fours like a cow or a hippo, making it the earliest known creature to do so.
To date all of the known pareiasaurs who roved the supercontinent of Pangea in the Permian era a quarter of a billion years ago were sprawlers whose limbs would jut out from the side of the body and then continue out or slant down from the elbow (like some modern lizards). Morgan Turner, lead author of the study in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, expected Bunostegos would be a sprawler, too, but the bones of the animal’s forelimbs tell a different story.
“A lot of the animals that lived around the time had a similar upright or semi-upri din rail  ght hind limb posture, but what’s interesting and special about Bunostegos is the forelimb, in that its anatomy is sprawling — precluding and seemingly directed underneath its body — unlike anything else at the time,” said Turner who performed the analysis under the supervision of Christian Sidor while a student at the University of Washington. Now Turner is a graduate student at Brown University. “The elements and features within the forelimb bones won’t allow a sprawling posture. That is unique.”
The findings allowed Turner, Sidor, and her co-authors to characterize how Bunostegos might have looked, standing like a cow and about the same size.
“Imagine a cow-sized, plant-eating reptile with a knobby skull and bony armor down its back,” said co-author Linda Tsuji of the Royal Ontario Museum, who discovered the fossils in Niger with Sidor and a team of paleontologists in 2003 and 2006.
Four forelimb findings
Turner examined much of the skeletons of several individuals. The findings that matter most, however, are all in the forelimbs. In particular, four observations make the case, she said, that Bunostegos stood differently than all the rest, with the legs entirely beneath the body.
The shoulder joint (1), humerus (2), knee-like elbow hinge (3), and a longer ulna (4) together make the case that Bunostegos stood with its legs under its body.
The shoulder joint — the glenoid fossa — is facing down such that the humerus (the bone running from shoulder to elbow) would be vertically oriented underneath. It would restrict the humerus from sticking out to the side.
Meanwhile Bunostegos’ humerus is not twisted like those of sprawlers. In a sprawler, the twist is what could allow the humerus to jut out to the side at the shoulder and then orient the forearm downward from the elbow. But the humerus of Bunostegos has no twist, suggesting that the foot could actually reach the ground only if the elbow and shoulders were aligned under the body, Turner said.
The elbow joint is also telling. Unlike in sprawling pareiasaurs, which had considerable mobility at the elbow, the movement of Bunostegos’s elbow is more limited. The way the radius and ulna (forearm bones) join with the humerus forms a hinge-like joint, and wouldn’t allow for the forearm to swing out to the sides. Instead, it would only swing in a back and forth direction like a human knee.
Finally, the ulna is longer than the humerus in Bunostegos, which is a common trait among non-sprawlers. “Many other sprawling four-legged animals have the reverse ratio,” Turner said.
Going back 260 million years
The idea that Bunostegos would be an outlier in terms of its posture matches well with the idea that it was somewhat of an outlier in its choice of habitat.
“Bunostegos was an isolated pareiasaur,” Turner said.
Way back when, Niger was an arid place (like some of it is today) where plants and water sources might well have been few and far between. Scientists have associated walking upright on all fours with a more energy-efficient posture than sprawling. For the long journeys between meals, Turner said, the upright posture might have been necessary for survival.
The significance of such an early example of the upright posture is that Bunostegos dates very far back on the evolutionary tree, pushing back the clock on when this posture shows up in evolution.
But Turner said she wouldn’t be surprised if other animals of the time are eventually also found to have similarities to this posture, which evolved independently in reptiles and mammals several times over the eras.
“Posture, from sprawling to upright, is not black or white, but instead is a gradient of forms,” Turner said. “There are many complexities about the evolution of posture and locomotion we are working to better understand every day. The anatomy of Bunostegos is unexpected, illuminating, and tells us we still have much to learn.”
At Brown, Turner is working in the lab of Stephen Gatesy, where she is studying a Industrial IoT Products   continuum of postures and locomotion in ancient creatures. In addition to Turner, Tsuji and Sidor, Oumarou Ide of the University of Niamey in Niger is an author of the study.
The National Science Foundation supported the research.

Halide, A New and Improved Programming Language for Image cashless payment   Processing Software
www.inhandnetworks.com
An image undergoing basic processing steps; exposure adjustments, then noise reduction, to arrive at the final image (bottom). Graphic: Christine Daniloff
In an effort to improve image-processing software, a team of researchers developed a new programming language called Halide, which is easier to read, write and revise and is significantly faster because Halide automates code-optimization procedures.
Image-processing software is a hot commodity: Just look at Instagram, a company built around image processing that Facebook is trying to buy for a billion dollars. Image processing is also going mobile, as more and more people are sending cellphone photos directly to the Web, without transferring them to a computer first.
At the same time, digital-photo files are getting so big that, without a lot of clever software engineering, processing them would take a painfully long time on a desktop computer, let alone a cellphone. Unfortunately, the tricks that engineers use to speed up their image-processing algorithms make their code almost unreadable, and rarely reusable. Adding a new function to an image-processing program, or modifying it to run on a different device, often requires rethinking an industrial IoT Gateway  d revising it from top to bottom.
Researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) aim to change that, with a new programming language called Halide. Not only are Halide programs easier to read, write and revise than image-processing programs written in a conventional language, but because Halide automates code-optimization procedures that would ordinarily take hours to perform by hand, they’re also significantly faster.
In 4g-lte   tests, the MIT researchers used Halide to rewrite several common image-processing algorithms whose performance had already been optimized by seasoned programmers. The Halide versions were typically about one-third as long but offered significant performance gains — two-, three-, or even six-fold speedups. In one instance, the Halide program was actually longer than the original — but the speedup was 70-fold.
Jonathan Ragan-Kelley, a graduate student in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Andrew Adams, a CSAIL postdoc, led the development of Halide, and they’ve released the code online. At this month’s Siggraph, the premier graphics conference, they’ll present a paper on Halide, which they co-wrote with MIT computer science professors Saman Amarasinghe and Fredo Durand and with colleagues at Adobe and Stanford University.
Parallel pipelines
One reason that image processing is so computationally intensive is that it generally requires a succession of discrete operations. After light strikes the sensor in a cellphone camera, the phone combs through the image data for values that indicate malfunctioning sensor pixels and corrects them. Then it correlates the readings from pixels sensitive to different colors to deduce the actual colors of image regions. Then it does some color correction, and then some contrast adjustment, to make the image colors better correspond to what the human eye sees. At this point, the phone has done so much processing that it takes another pass through the data to clean it up.
And that’s just to display the image on the phone screen. Software that does anything more complicated, like removing red eye, or softening shadows, or boosting color saturation — or making the image look like an old Polaroid photo — introduces still more layers of procePredictive Grid Analyticsssing. Moreover, high-level modifications often require the software to go back and recompute prior stages in the pipeline.
In today’s multicore chips, distributing different segments of the image to cores working in parallel can make image processing more efficient. But the way parallel processing is usually done, after each step in the image-processing pipeline, the cores would send the results of their computations back to main memory. Because data transfer is much slower than computation, this can eat up all the performance gains offered by parallelization.
So software engineers try to keep the individual cores busy for as long as possible before they have to ship their results to memory. That means that the cores have to execute several steps in the processing pipeline on their separate chunks of data without aggregating their results. Keeping track of all the dependencies between pixels being processed on separate cores is what makes the code for efficient image processors so complicated. Moreover, the trade-offs between the number of cores, the processing power of the cores, the amount of local memory available to each core, and the time it takes to move data off-core varies from machine to machine, so a program optimized for one device may offer no speed advantages on a different one.
Divide and conquer
Halide doesn’t spare the programmer from thinking about how to parallelize efficiently on particular machines, but it splits that problem off from the description of the image-processing algorithms. A Halide program has two sections: one for the algorithms, and one for the processing “schedule.” The schedule can specify the size and shape of the image chunks that each core needs to process at each step in the pipeline, and it can specify data dependencies — for instance, that steps being executed on particular cores will need access to the results of previous steps on different cores. Once the schedule is drawn up, however, Halide handles all the accounting automatically.
A programmer who wants to export a program to a different machine just changes the schedule, not the algorithm description. A programmer who wants to add a new processing step to the pipeline just plugs in a description of the new procedure, without having to modify the existing ones. (A new step in the pipeline will require a corresponding specification in the schedule, however.)
“When you have the idea that you might want to parallelize something a certain way or use stages a certain way, when writing that manually, it’s really hard to express that idea correctly,” Ragan-Kelley says. “If you have a new optimization idea that you want to apply, chances are you’re going to spend three days debugging it because you’ve broken it in the process. With this, you change one line that expresses that idea, and it synthesizes the correct thing.”
Although Halide programs are simpler to write and to read than ordinary image-processing programs, because the scheduling is handled automatically, they still frequently offer performance gains over even the most carefully hand-engineered code. Moreover, Halide code is so easy to modify that programmers could simply experiment with half-baked ideas to see if they improve performance.
“You can just flail around and try different things at random, and you’ll often find something really good,” Adams says. “Only much later, when you’ve thought about it very hard, will you figure out why it’s good.”
“There’s a lot of excitement about using a domain-specific language like the one they chose to do, but there really haven’t been a lot of success stories,” says John Owens, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California at Davis. “And I think this is going to turn out to be a terrific success story. It really has all the pieces you want from a completed system, and it’s in a really important application domain.”
“I can also see it inspiring a lot of future work,” Owens adds. “I think this is going to be a really high-impact project.”

Cyanobacteria Engin industrial iot gateway  eered to Make Raw Materials for Fuels from Sunlight
www.inhandnetworks.com
Cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, can be engineered to make raw materials for fuels and chemicals from sunlight.
In a newly published study, UC Davis scientists detail how they engineered cyanobacteria to grow chemical precursors for fuels and plastics, taking a step forward in establishing independence from fossil reserves.
Chemists at the University of California, Davis, have engineered blue-green algae to grow chemical precursors for fuels and plastics — the first step in replacing fossil fuels as raw materials for the chemical industry.
“Most chemical feedstocks come from petroleum and natural gas, and we need other sources,” said Shota Atsumi, assistant professor of chemistry at UC Davis and lead author of the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The U.S. Depart substation monitoring  ment of Energy has set a goal of obtaining a quarter of industrial chemicals from biological processes by 2025.
Biological reactions are good at forming carbon-carbon bonds, using carbon dioxide as a raw material for reactions powered by sunlight. It’s called photosynthesis, and cyanobacteria, also known as “blue-green algae,” have been doing it for more than 3 billion years.
Using cyanobacteria to grow chemicals has other ad DIN-Rail router  vantages: They do not compete with food needs, like corn’s role in the creation of ethanol.
The challenge is to get the cyanobacteria to make significant amounts of chemicals that can be readily converted to chemical feedstocks. With support from Japanese chemical manufacturer Asahi Kasei Corp., Atsumi’s lab at UC Davis has been working on introducing new chemical pathways into the cyanobacteria.
The researchers identified enzymes from online databases that carried out the reactions they were looking for, and then introduced the DNA for these enzymes into the cells. Working a step at a time, they built up a three-step pathway that allows the cyanobacteria to convert carbon dioxide into 2,3 butanediol, a chemical that can be used to make paint, solvents, plastics and fuels.
Because enzymes may work differently in different organisms, it is nearly impossible to predict how well the pathway will work before testing it in an experiment, Atsumi said.
After three weeks growth, the cyanobacteria yielded 2.4 grams of 2,3 butanediol per liter of growth medium — the highest productivity yet achieved for chemicals grown by cyanobacteria and with potential for commercial development, Atsumi said.
Atsumi hopes to tune the system to increase productivity further and experiment with other products, while corporate partn industrial wireless  ers explore scaling up the technology.
Co-authors of the paper are graduate student John Oliver, postdoctoral researcher Iara Machado and Hisanari Yoneda, a visiting researcher from Asahi Kasei Corp.

New Research Shows Vocalizing credit card vending machine   Birds Could Tell Us More About Speech Disorders
www.inhandnetworks.com
New genomics research from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial  VPN router  Intelligence Laboratory suggests vocalizing birds could tell us more about speech disorders.
Think that sparrow whistling outside your bedroom window is nothing more than pleasant background noise?
A new paper from a researcher at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) suggests that we can apply what we know about songbirds to our understanding of human speech production — and, therefore, come closer to identifying and potentially even industrial cellular modem3g modem   reducing the prevalence of disorders like stuttering and Huntington’s Disease.
In a paper published in Science this month, CSAIL postdoc Andreas Pfenning and collaborators at Duke University compared genetic maps of brain tissue from three groups: humans, vocal-learning birds, and non-vocal-learning birds and primates.
Their results showed that there are more than 50 different genes that display similar activity patterns in humans and vocal-learning birds — patterns that are distinct from those in the brains of animals incapable of vocal-learning. That is, if a gene was more active in humans, it was more active in songbirds, but not in non-songbirds.
These findings dramatically advance existing research that previously only identified one gene (“FOXP2”) involved in both human and avian language centers. Pfenning says the work shows that genetic experiments involving birds could help scientists learn more about which genes might be involved in different speech conditions in humans.
Pfenning, who received his PhD from Duke in 2012, says he was hopeful that such correlations would be found, especially given that the manner in which birds learn specific song patterns is so similar to how humans learn to form words.
“Studying fine motor behavior is vital for a lot of neurological disorders in humans, but traditional research subjects like mice are difficult to quantify for those kinds of actions,” says Pfenning. “With birdsong, meanwhile, there are far more exact metrics, like the precision of the pitch, the timing/rhythm of the notes and even the higher-level ‘grammar’ of different songs.”
The researchers utilized multiple massive datasets for the study, including the avian genome, the songbird genome that was completed in 2010, and the “Allen Brain Atlas” that was used for humans and primates. The work is part of nearly 30 studies p industrial LTE router ublished this month by the Avian Genome Consortium, which seeks to sequence the genomes of all 48 major bird groups — only three of which had been sequenced before the consortium got to work in 2010.
Beyond the paper’s implications for specific speech disorders, Pfenning is optimistic that further research could help illuminate how our languages have evolved in the bigger picture.
“Are there common features in the evolution patterns of different animals that can tell us more about the history of human language?” he asks. “Our study is an exciting first step, and we’re just scraping the surface of what’s possible.”

Study Shows Increased Mortality Risk from emark certified   Red Meat Consumption

“This study provides clear evidence that regular consumption of red meat, especially processed meat, contributes substantially to premature death,” said senior author Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. Image from iStock .
Say goodbye to fast-food burgers and hello to fresh garden salads. While observing 37,698 men for up to 22 years and 83,644 women for up to 28 years, a new study found that regular consumption of red meat, particula WiFi M2M Router rly processed red meat, was associated with increased mortality risk.
A new study by Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers has found that red meat consumption is associated with an increased risk of total, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality. The results also showed that substituting other healthy protein sources, such as fish, poultry, nuts, and legumes, was associated with a lower risk of mortality.
“Our study adds more evidence to the health risks of eating high amounts of red meat, which has been associated with type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers in other studies,” said lead author An Pan, research fellow in the Department of Nutrition at HSPH.
The study was published online in Archives of Internal Medicine.
The researchers, including senior author Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at HSPH, and colleagues, prospectively observed 37,698 men from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study for up to 22 years and 83,644 women in the Nurses’ Health Study for up to 28 years who were free of cardiovascular disease and cancer at baseline. Their diets were assessed through questionnaires every four years.
A combined 23,926 deaths were documented in the two studies, of which 5,910 were from cardiovascular disease and 9,464 from cancer. Regular consumption of red meat, particularly processed red meat, was associated with increased mortality risk. One daily serving of unprocessed red meat (about the size of a deck of cards) was associated with a 13 percent increased risk of mortality, and one daily serving of processed red meat (one hot dog or two slices of bacon) was associated with a 20 percent increased risk.
Among specific causes, the corresponding increases in risk were 18 percent and 21 percent for cardiovascular mortality, and 10 percent and 16 percent for cancer mortality. These analyses took into account chronic disease risk factors such as age, body mass index, physical ac 4g router tivity, and family history of heart disease or major cancers.
Red meat, especially processed meat, contains ingredients that have been linked to increased risk of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. These include heme iron, saturated fat, sodium, nitrites, and certain carcinogens that are formed during cooking.
Replacing one serving of total red meat with one serving of a healthy protein source was associated with a lower mortality risk: 7 percent for fish, 14 percent for poultry, 19 percent for nuts, 10 percent for legumes, 10 percent for low-fat dairy products, and 14 percent for whole grains. The researchers estimated that 9.3 percent of deaths in men and 7.6 percent in women could have been prevented at the end of the follow-up if all the participants had consumed less than 0.5 servings per day of red meat.
“This study provides clear evidence that regular consumption of red meat, especially processed meat, contributes substantially to premature death,” said Hu. “On the other hand, choosing more healthful sources of protein in place of red VPN router   meat can confer significant health benefits by reducing chronic disease morbidity and mortality.”
Support for the study was provided by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Cancer Institute.
Other HSPH authors include Qi Sun, Adam Bernstein, JoAnn Manson, Meir Stampfer, and Walter Willett.
