ENTRY SEVENTY-FOUR
Despite having a wide range in music taste, there's only a handful of bands that have really stuck with me through the years, getting me through the bad and helping me celebrate the good.
My top three of this handful are Nine Inch Nails, Tool, and Type O Negative.
A couple of days ago, I came across a comment section discussing Peter Steele's death. Something that was said, that was agreed with and emphasized on by multiple people, has been bothering me to my core since I read it.
Many people feel that Peter Steele would still be alive today had he "been with someone who gave a shit."
We might still have him around today "if he had someone who cared enough to get him to the hospital on time."
My heart sank and my stomach dropped after reading this. I immediately logged off. That didn't sit well with me at all.
I then tried looking it up. I felt discouraged and silly, giving up rather quickly. I thought I didn't know how or what, in specific, to search for anyway. I also thought there's a chance that it might not be true, that it's just talk, rumors, that kind of thing.
"Maybe people were just saying that because they don't like her. I have no clue!" Now I'm starting to question myself. I log back on to look for the comment section but everything refreshed and I didn't catch the name of the page that made the post.
True or untrue, the thought alone really fuckin disturbed me. I mean, it really did. He deserved someone to care for who he was outside of the celebrity. I hope to the Gods that those comments weren't true.
Peter Steele, aside from "musical genius" and "one of the most influential," was described to be kind, generous, helpful, supportive, inventive, and a hard worker.
When I'd see interviews with him on TV back in the day, and seeing interviews today when venturing around on YouTube, I found him to be very interesting, intelligent, and insightful. His dark humor was always fun too. And, of course, he was drop dead gorgeous. 🥰😌 The man was a living god, just saying.
Needless to mention the passion in the music he wrote and in the performances he gave (thank you TV and YouTube for letting me experience that by the way, I never got to see Type O Negative live).
He believed showing the world his heart would draw people to the band, and he was right. He said he wanted to be remembered as someone who helped people through hard times, and he is. It makes me sad to know he was sobered up, excited to make more music, and hopeful for the future just before his passing. Gut-wrenching when you think about it, and when you think about all the things he went through before that as well.
Being misunderstood, struggling with addiction, and the mental health issues involving Bipolar disorder, grief, depression, dealing with the aftermath of lockup, and feeling betrayed by his family. He also said himself he had huge problems with abandonment and loss, probably because he experienced those things more than we know.
In addition, being unlucky in love still blows my mind to this day. Especially knowing how he was worshipped by women all over this country, including me. How many of us out here would've worshipped the ground he walked on? And you mean to tell me some of the women that actually had a chance, screwed it up? Considering things like taking the breakups hard and being cheated on, he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, wasn't he? Some souls are just too good for this world, I swear. And his was one of them.
But that's what terrifies me... He was unlucky in love, so what if the comments are true? Literally makes me sick to think about, especially since the band, his childhood friends, tried to reach out to him when he was sick but was only able to speak with her. There's a dark aura all over that.
Someone please tell me it's a rumor, that he had a good woman at his side in those final days. Hearing about toxic exes shows where a person was lost and hurting, and he deserved better. He deserved peace and quiet and comfort. He deserved protection.
Men like this, regardless of how big and tall and strong they are, need to be protected. Their bodies are hard but their hearts are fragile. People that are kind-hearted will often suffer the most in life. The way he loved his women and the way he loved his animals showed he felt everything so, so deeply. He needed to be protected. Yes, men are biologically stronger than we women are, but they need us to protect them too, just in a different way.
My guess is that Peter's spirit is still with us, silently urging us all to never forget about Type O Negative. And we never will. RIP 💔

Jason does not have a good time in this chapter; once again, there is torture in this chapter. Nothing too graphic, but it's still there. Proceed with caution.
Bruce was frantic. His son was missing, and he had no idea where he could be.
“When did you see him last,” Maddie asked.
“When we came back,” he answered while looking at security cameras around the manor. He watched as Jason climbed over the gates and went down the road. Bruce should��ve kept an eye on him; he knew how Jason was.
“Oracle, can you find where Jason went?”
“I’m looking through the neighbors’ security cameras. It looks like he returned to the safe house where the Fentons stayed.”
Bruce watched as Jason went straight for his motorcycle. Then, he was ambushed by people in white suits. They had tranqed Jason with a neon green liquid. It didn’t even take 10 seconds for everything to play out.
The GIW had his son; there would be hell to pay.

As Jason woke up strapped on a cold examination table, he could already see Alfred’s look of disappointment and Bruce’s glare. Fuck. He should’ve stayed in the manor.
But the thought of being locked up for something he didn’t do had chafed him, so he decided to get his motorcycle before being locked up for an undetermined amount of time. Now he was paying the price.
Jason hadn’t seen anyone, but he was stripped down to his boxers, his dissection scar fully displayed. He couldn’t help but shiver. Jason stared at the white lights overhead, wondering how long it had been since he’d been captured and if his family knew he was missing.
He knew his family was coming for him. As the door opened and scientists with gleaming, glowing green tools entered the room, followed by the GIW agents, he wondered if they would arrive in time.

Agent K and Agent O were practically vibrating with excitement.
They hadn’t been able to catch the Ghost King, but they got something almost as good. A revenant. They had followed a faint ectosignature to a house close to Bristol. They had thought it was the ghost kid but found a different ecto-entity. Once they captured the thing, they researched the subject.
Subject R-198X: Formerly known as Jason Peter Todd-Wayne. The adopted son of Bruce Wayne. Jason Wayne had mysteriously come back from the dead. Bruce Wayne had spun a story that they had buried the wrong person.
Now they knew the truth; Subject R-198X had returned as an ecto-entity scum, which gave the US government free rein to experiment on the creature.
Agent Alpha was glad the facility was Superman proofed.
It was well known that Bruce Wayne funded Batman and, subsequently, the Justice League. It wouldn’t be good if the man could find his son. However, she was confident the Justice League would never find their base, and even if they did, they had the US government's full support.
“Let’s begin by seeing how the entity responds to poisons,” Agent Alpha said with a sadistic smirk.

“What do you mean you can’t hear his heartbeat?”
Bruce paced the manor as he yelled at the phone. He knew he should calm down and think logically, but he couldn’t help but remember the pictures the Fentons had shown him of the ghosts the GIW got hold of.
He could still see the dismembered body parts.
(Jason wouldn’t be able to grow them back. He was still alive!)
“I’m sorry, Bruce, wherever they have him, he’s well-warded against my powers.”
Bruce wanted to scream. He didn’t; he had to keep a cool head.
“Thank you, Clark,” Bruce hung up the phone and turned toward the Fentons. They were on the Batcomputer and, with the help of Tucker Foley, were trying to find where the GIW had taken Jason. Bruce hated being useless, but he knew the Fentons and their allies had a better chance of finding the GIW.
“This is my fault,” Danny’s words echoed in the cave. It got silent.
“No, it isn’t, akhi.”
Danny turned toward Damian, “They were looking for me. I led them to Gotham; Idecided to stay here even though I was haunted. It’s my fault.”
Jazz put her arm around Danny’s shoulders.
“No, it isn’t, little brother, and don’t you dare blame yourself.”
“Then who’s fault is it?”
“Not yours. The moment you, you take the blame off the real offenders.”
“She’s right,” Bruce couldn’t help but reassure his newest son. Jason may be missing, but he still had the duty to take care of the ones that were here, “Blame the government for passing the laws, blame Lex Luthor, blame the GIW,” blame me, he thought, “but it’s not your fault.”
“We’ll find him, sweetie,” Maddie said.
“Yeah, he’s part of the family, and we know what we do when someone messes with family! Right, Dann-o?”
Danny gave a watery smile before nodding, a steely determination entering his eyes.
“Right,” he answered back, his eyes glowing green.

Talia put down her cup of tea and answered the phone.
“Yes, beloved?”
“Jason’s been taken.”
Talia felt her blood freeze; she didn’t show any emotions outward.
“When?”
“Five hours ago.”
“And you’re just now telling me,” She said sharply.
“Hn,” was her beloved’s eloquent response.
“Do you know where he is?”
“We’re working on it?”
Talia wanted to rage against Bruce. This is precisely what she had warned him about earlier that same day! Now her eldest was missing. Still, she held her tongue. There was no point in bringing that up now.
“I’ll be at the manor in half an hour with a dozen of my best warriors.”
She hung up before Bruce could say anything. She had a son to save.

Jason held back the scream as the poison ate through him. Unfortunately, it didn’t kill him.
“The Subject seems to metabolize the poison faster than it can affect him,” the prick that had injected him spoke into a recorder.
“It stills hurts, fucker!”
“Subject is adept at mimicking pain. There is a liquid that appears to be sweat, and, like the other subjects, he is impersonating human screams.”
“It isn’t impersonating!”
“Agent Alpha, we can silence the subject now if you want. I have enough data to examine his screams later.”
“Do it,” a blond bitch in a white suit said.
“When I get out of here, I’m going after yo—umph,” one of the assistants gagged Jason before he could finish his threat.
“Now we are going to take out nails to see how fast the Subject regenerates,” the prick spoke monotonously into the recorder.
Jason clenched his fist, but it was to no avail. He screamed into the gag as they tore out his fingernails one by one.
“Interestingly, it seems that revenants do not bleed ectoplasm but what appears to be blood. We will take samples and compare them with human blood and ectoplasm. If there are little changes, there are probably more revenants than we know. Note: remember to look up how many people are ‘revived’ and look into them.”
Jason felt tears at the asshole's next words: “It is time to vivisect the subject.”
I'm sorry if this chapter has more errors than usual. Depression has me by the metaphorical balls. It took me all day to write this chapter, and I have no idea if it's any good. Apologies if I don't update on time next week. It really depends on how I'm feeling emotionally.

Garden Tools
an Autumn is Healing story (see previous or series)
Summary: Hydra has come for the Autumn and Winter Soldiers. Can Steve find you in time?
Keeping with how I've done all these bits, this is short and...not sweet (?) but hopefully still pretty cool. Warnings for canon-level violence and mentions of death/killing. WC ~1k

“Avant-guard,” the speakers shriek throughout the compound, red emergency lights flashing in the dark. “Quatre.”
They’re here. They’ve come.
Hydra knows that Bucky’s words don’t work anymore, but since you were recovered without any records—nothing written and no video of your activations—the good guys never could break your training.
Maybe you haven’t been the Autumn Soldier for a while, but you could be again.
“Larmes,” another word comes.
French, Steve jolts, they programmed you in French instead of Russian, a cruel joke to accent the ‘romance’ of your original purpose.
Where the hell are you? He and Bucky clear hall after hall trying to find Hydra’s infiltrators.
At the end of one stretch, they find Parker, squirrelly climbing the walls.
“Hey, guys, uh, what’s up?”
Bucky lowers the weapon he plucked off of a Hydra agent. “Would you get down here, kid? I’m not talking to you upside down.”
“Mer.”
“We were trapped in a containment chamber,” Steve starts. “By the time we got the door open, agents were on the ground. Did you do that?”
Peter shakes his head, which is exactly what Steve was afraid of, although the dead giveaway was finding puncture marks on the top of one guy’s skull, approximately the spacing of—
The three round another corner of hallway, and there it is: your metal rake from the garden.
“Vigne.”
Two more Hydra agents lay sprawled across the floor. A third is alive, crawling absently while gasping for air, something tangled in his legs.
Bucky flicks open a knife from his side to cut away the thrice-looped elastic from the guy’s neck, and Steve recognizes your skirt, long flowing fabric with little embroidered daisies, now dirty and speckled with blood, waistband ripped to remove the makeshift tourniquet.
Well, that’s not great. Steve’s nerves dial up to eleven as he meets Bucky’s wild concern.
The live agent gets zip-tied quickly.
Buck holds up five fingers. They only have a few words left. Either they find you or they find the agent on the intercom. Unless they’re too late…
“Charmante.”
Peter tilts his head, giant white ‘eyes’ shifting in confusion. “Is that..? Are those…ironic?”
“Comms hall.” Buck nods to the stairwell.
Peter motions to web himself up the middle of the staircase for speed but hesitates.
“Do it,” Steve grunts immediately, taking the stairs three at a time with Bucky close behind.
“Fin.”
They hear Parker make it into the hall long before they’re on the right floor, but Steve pushes his legs faster in the dark. There is only one place that would have power and access to the full announcement network while the main breaker is out.
The red flashing continues.
“Trente” rings out just as they open the door. Steve runs right into the legs of a man hanging from the ceiling rungs.
And there are your shirt sleeves tied together…
Steve sees the laser of a scope before he hears the struggle. Peter’s mild commentary as he dodges a few bullets and shoots webs to muzzle the gun echoes in the hall.
There are three more.
Steve and Bucky flank the edges of the hall in doorways, and Buck fires only one burst.
“Shit. The kid’s right there.”
Seconds later, through loud cries in Russian from the advancing agents, Peter crawls along the wall to duck into Steve’s alcove, and finally, Bucky can shoot.
Except he doesn’t. He stands there staring while Steve hears a thump.
“Négligeable.”
Around the corner, Steve peeks to see your legs around one agent’s head. You’re suspended from the ceiling and twist deftly, letting the second fall beside his comrade. Then you slink to the ground silently behind the remaining agent, the one still yelling something at Bucky, presumably some sort of order to obey. They aren’t here to damage the assets after all.
You have only those little booty shorts on beneath your tattered blouse, and from the hem of one leg, you pull out your hand trowel and shove it up through the man’s exposed jaw, barely pausing before storming halfway towards Bucky and turning into the comms suite.
Steve can’t make out the details of your face in the dark or faint amber glow. He has to get closer.
“Enchaîné,” the final Hydra agent screams, half into the mic and half at you standing there.
Too late, Miss Hyde and her Jekyll weeder are ready. 
You heave the bi-pointed instrument with the same precision as Bucky handles his knives, and it lands, sticking straight into the agent’s throat just above the edge of his tact vest and below the rim of his helmet.
That was the tenth word.
Everything freezes. Steve stares at your outline for a long moment before the lights flicker back to life.
“We’re back up,” he hears in his ear, “status report?”
“Hydra neutralized throughout Wing Two, first and fourth floors,” Bucky mutters in reply.
“And Autumn?”
Steve sees the tiny green light by your ear, the one that shines at the outer rim of your noise-cancelling headphones, a gift from none other than Peter Parker.
You turn around slowly, face completely blank, assessing.
Steve raises his hand, hoping you could not be activated through the headset, knowing that tech can only block out so much.
And then you focus on Steve and Bucky, suddenly shaking off the stiff fighting stance and curling into the shy posture he recognizes and loves.
“Autumn is secure,” he huffs in relief.
You pull back the headphones. Even from afar, Steve can hear the music blaring.
“…never gonna give, never gonna give…”
“Nooooooo,” Peter whines.
“…give you up…”
Bucky startles, thinking Parker’s found another agent on a security feed.
“I wanted to be the first to Rick-Roll her.”
“Hey, Pete,” you ask while bending over to rip your weeder out with a soft squelch, “you think you could add this guy to my next playlist?”
Bucky relaxes his weapon, grumbling, “children…”
Steve’s not sure whether to be alarmed or turned on.
“Let’s go gather your tools, Rosie,” he sighs, “and maybe get you another skirt…”

I think about this graph sometimes. Or, rather, I attempt to think about it, and find I can't wrap my head around it. What was it like to live in a world where parents routinely outlived their children? In the world. Until about a hundred years ago, the world where parents routinely outlived their children was the only world that had ever existed.
From Antonia Fraser's The Weaker Vessel, about life for women in 17th-century England:
William Brownlow kept a meticulous recording of [his wife's] child-bearing from 27 June 1626 when their first child Richard was born, who died in October of that year, down to the birth of their nineteenth child twenty-two years later... At one point, between 1638 and 1646, seven children, born at almost exactly yearly intervals, died in a row: Thomas, Francis, Benjamin, George, James, Maria, and Anne. William Brownlow's exclamations of grief as each new tragedy struck show some attempt at reconciliation to the workings of providence -- "Though my children die, the Lord liveth and they exchange but a temporal life for an eternal one" -- but absolutely no diminuition in grief. Little George, his fifteenth child, managed to live from October 1641 to 29 July of the following year; when he died, his father wrote, "I was at ease but Thou O God hast broken me asunder and shaken me to pieces."
Or take the case of Peter the Great, quite possibly the most powerful man on earth for much of his reign: of his fifteen legitimate children, eleven died before their fifth birthday and a twelfth only made it to age six and a half. The chart above has a more expansive definition of "child" (to age 15) and even by its count, Peter the Great and the Brownlows were particularly unlucky. But still.
The other day, at a book sale, I picked up the diaries of Martha Farnsworth, who grew up in Kansas in the 1870s; her only child was born in January 1892 and lived five months. You can read the entries yourselves: January 24th, "The dearest, sweetest little treasure ever a mother had"; April 15th, "I can't thank God enough, for sending this baby into my life"; May 23rd, "My little treasure, don't get sick, for it makes mother's heart ache and ache"; May 31st, "My heart aches with fear"; June 27th, "God sent the angels for her and her terrible suffering ended and mine commenced."
And then I put the book back and went to pick up my kids from school.
And I think now: Martha Farnsworth would trade places with me in a heartbeat. Two children, both of them well past the age of five. One of them missed school today with a cold. I'm not worried. If you zoom out far enough I am in a cohort of the luckiest parents who ever lived.
So why don't I feel my good fortune more?
Part of it, granted, is that constant grateful joy is not necessarily the most useful tool in the parent's toolbox. Sometimes you have to stop thanking God that your children are alive and start pointing out to them that if they're going to borrow your phone then they need to tell you when someone's trying to reach you (for example). But in theory one can correct them, or have activities separate from them, and still think, "Wow, I'm a lucky dog," all the time, because if your kid is alive and healthy and growing then you are a lucky dog all that time.
I want to make a larger sociological statement, about how "X doesn't make us happier," for whatever feature of the modern world X, maybe should have very little value as a criticism. The tenfold decline in child mortality has to be one of the most profound shifts in human history; if we can take that for granted, then there may be no limit to our ability to make lemons out of lemonade. But I can't criticize other people for failing to do what I seem very bad at doing myself.

The Anomaly - Ch. 16
Ch: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16
Miguel once adored the thrill of being Spiderman. Miguel O’ Hara was surrounded by hardship and trauma, but Spiderman was free; nothing but the crisp, slightly polluted air of Nueva York and the tug of gravity. Spiderman was a hero, a protector, a symbol. It had been so simple to forget all the struggles of Miguel O’ Hara when he put on that mask. It felt good.
But there was still a man behind that mask. A man who fell folly to what many before him have; trying to live up to expectations. Spiderman was a hero; of course he wanted to make the city a better place. Spiderman was a protector; of course he would defend the Great Web from the anomalies that threatened to destroy it. Spiderman was a symbol; he had to be someone people rallied behind.  
But Miguel O’ Hara was just a man who spread himself too thin. Sleepless nights slaving away in his lab, developing the next tool to either deal with the anomalies or the tears in space they left behind. Skipped meals because there was always something that needed his attention, and when he did get a chance to eat it, they were quick things that were easy to shovel in his mouth. His eyes constantly ached from the orange glow of his monitors and followed him when he closed his eyelids for whatever short nap he managed to sneak in. 
To be Spiderman was an honor, a responsibility few could live up to. 
Being Spiderman ate him alive. 
There was no balance between Spiderman and self. Too many people relied on Spiderman-2099, and Miguel… Well, the people who used to rely on Miguel O’ Hara didn't anymore. 
There was no more ‘thrill’ in being Spiderman, only the arduous weight of sacrifice. He just had hoped it would only be his sacrifice and not the people around him. He should have known better. Things never went the way he wanted. 
It was a cold night in this particular New York. No one and nothing to keep him company at this odd 4 AM in Central Park besides his thoughts. No stars, not in this New York. Not in most. The moon drifted away from him, rapidly approaching the west to set and let the sun rise. 
Funny to think he was finally without work, yet still, very reasonably, sleep did not come easy to him. Miles and the Spot have been dragging him across the multiverse for over a month already. They were anomalies in more ways than one. Miguel couldn’t have imagined that between the two of them, he'd have more of a rapport with the Spot than the sweet kid Peter B used to gush about. Yet here was was, nursing aging wounds from Miles that were tended to by the Spot. 
Miguel never imagined being in this scenario in the first place. He always thought that if one of his nemeses were to get revenge on him, he would face a healthy sprinkle of torture until death, but… but not like this. He expected physical torture and the mental toll would simply be the result of that, but this was almost the opposite. Miles meticulously planned out every collapse of a universe, every murder of a Spider, all for him to watch; the beatings were almost an afterthought. 
Miguel would take any amount of hits if it meant he never had to hear the shrill chorus of death again, if it meant he never had to feel the violent vibrations as the air struggled to hold itself together, never had to watch the sky scream in flashing colors, or the ground shake as it caved to the inevitable. 
Miguel would easily choose to take their place if it meant his Spiders didn’t have to face the cruel end of Miles’ claws, if it meant they had a chance to stand against him, to never see the way their bodies fell after giving their all and still losing, or see the way Miles turned to him with glee in his eyes and their blood splattered against his baby round cheeks, or way the blood ran from their cooling corpses and sunk between the small divots in the concrete, an infection never able to be fully removed because it seeped into every pore and pebble and how could anyone even dream of being rid of it.
IF HE COULD GET THE RED OUT FROM BEHIND HIS EYES. 
If Miguel could just save them, he wouldn’t mind the eternal limbo between life and death. But he didn’t get that choice. 
Pain radiated from his palms. He unclenched his fists and retracted his talons. He exhaled a shaky breath. He sat quietly on the wooden park bench. A lone lightpost a few yards from him gave off a soft glow. It didn’t quite reach him. 
Should Miguel have done nothing? Should he have let be the universal distortion he discovered all those years ago? If he let those first few universes fall, would they be where they were now? Would those sacrifices have lessened the losses they have now? If he never picked up a long dead mantle would all those universes still remain? If George O’ Hara took his beating too far, would the multiverse be better off?
Maybe. 
Or maybe it would have all gone to shit anyway. 
What was Miguel even doing here? There were so many other things he could be doing, but here he was doing absolutely nothing. He looked up at the skyline, just making out the Oscorp building in the distance, a major tech giant in most universes. Maybe. Maybe not. His eyes fell back down to his lap. The blood from his palms stained his sweatpants. He looked back up to the skyline, at the blackened silhouette of the skyscrapers.
“It’s past your curfew.” Miles appeared from out of the shadows on the opposite side of the bench.
“I thought I only had a cage.” Miguel didn’t even turn to look at him. 
“No, you have a leash too and I opted to make it a little longer today.”
Because that was all he was to them; a pet. Even that was a stretch. Miguel was their toy, to push and pull, to beat and drag through the dirt as they pleased. He sighed. “What are you doing here, Miles?” 
“Just wanted to see what our ‘ol mittens got up to.”
“You got a tracker on these things,” he lifted up a cuffed hand. “Could have just stayed at the apartment.”
“Sure, but you could be scheming.”
No, he wasn’t. “And? You can’t cage my mind.”
Miles saw it as a challenge. “Says who?” “Says you. A lobotomy would defeat my purpose here, wouldn’t it?”
The boy scoffed and crossed his arms. “Whatever, man,” he conceded. He leaned against the bench and followed Miguel’s sightline to Oscorps’ logo. “So you have been planning your great escape.”
Miguel tried it many times, put up a fight even more, but these damned cuffs. Even when they gave him a full dose of his serum, he was still at their mercy. Scratch, claw, tear, no matter how beserk Miguel went, Miles would tell the Spot to stay out of it. No matter how battered, bruised, or bloodied Miles got, they fought until either collapsed. The kid was testing himself and he was getting better, but so was Miguel. 
“You can’t keep me here, Miles. It’s only a matter of time.” If they wanted to treat him as a pet, so be it. He was a jaguar pacing its enclosure, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. 
Miles huffed. “I’ll let you cook.”
Miguel’s nose scrunched. “What?”
The confusion transferred over to Miles, confused at Miguel’s confusion. “What?”
“Cook?”
“Like… you’re cooking?”
“Where– There’s–” Miguel looked around. “We’re not in a kitchen.”
“Like coming up with a plan and doing it well.” Miles sounded confused at his own explanation, or rather that he had to explain at all. 
This only confused Miguel further. “But how does cooking…?”
Miles gave him a strange look of disbelief. “Like getting ingredients and putting it together to make something delicious, I guess. Cook.”
“Oh,” Miguel said, finally nodding in understanding. “Like ‘dev.’”
Miles blinked furiously at him. “Dev?” 
“Like ‘who has the devs’ or ‘you’re dev.’”
“You’ve explained nothing.”
Miguel struggled to come up with an answer. It was like talking to his abuela. How do you explain such a 2099 colloquialism to… someone from the early 2000s. This was why he did his best to keep his language plain and devoid of any slang back at the Society. “It basically means plan. So ‘who came up with the plan’ or ‘you’re in charge’.”
Miles scoffed. “Who comes up with this stuff?”
“Probably the same sort of people who came up with cook.”
Miles snorted. “Was that a joke?” 
“I don't do jokes.”
“That kinda sounded like a joke to me.”
Miguel heaved a sigh. What was the point in arguing with the kid over something so trivial? He spent enough energy actually fighting him. “Do you really need to do this?”
“Do what?”
“Goad me into an argument.” His eyes trailed back to the looming building of Oscorp. 
“Why not?”
“Wouldn’t it be easier to kill me and be done with it? Move on to other things?”
“For you maybe.”
“You don’t think it would be better for your mental health to be rid of me?”
“That would imply I’m not doing exactly what I want to be doing.” So Miles has previously said. Questioning him was like walking in circles. 
Miguel leaned back, chin tilted up towards the black night sky. “I see through your facade, Miles. Trying to play off your playful violence for something it’s not.”
“What’s that?”
“Power. Control.”
Miles was coiled tight standing over him. “Are you saying I have neither?”
“I am.” He closed his eyes and let the chill press against his cheeks. “You have strength but are weak, and call it power. You chain me down and put a collar around my neck and call it control. But it’s not.”
“Then what–”
“Hey,” a distant voice called out, too deep to be the Spot.  
Miguel cracked an eye open. 
Miles snapped to look at the offending figure walking up to them. 
“You guys look like you’re having fun.” His face was obscured in the darkness of the hoodie pulled over his head. 
Miles crossed his arms. “What’s it to you?”
“Nothing, I was just wondering if you wanted to have some more fun.”
Miles took a step back. His face filled with skepticism and a hint of disgust. “I don’t know man. Sounds kind of weird.”
“No! Nothing weird! I got all sorts of fun things. Anything you need, my man. Amps, tabs, special k, blow, you name it, I got it.” 
“Blow?” Miguel asked incredulously. “What year are we in?”
“Whatever year you want it to be, my friend.”
Miguel rolled his eyes. “Not interested.”
“What about you, little man?”
“No,” Miguel answered for Miles before he could even think not to. His captor leveled him with a look, but seemed more interested in seeing how this played out. “He’s a minor,” he tacked on rather lamely.
“And that’s what makes drugs not ok?” Miles raised a brow at him.
“No,” Miguel ran a hand over his face. “I just meant that… It’s worse.”
“Oh, you mean it makes it extra illegal.” Miles brightened as the exasperation grew on his face.
“Sure.”
The guy waved them off. “Ah, that’s just what the man tells you. A lot of things that were illegal aren’t illegal now and vice versa.”
Miles tilted his head back at Miguel in a way that meant he was taking none of this seriously. “He’s got a point.” He grinned. A sickeningly familiar mirth. Miguel was just here for his entertainment, his suffering was his entertainment. To struggle was to feed into that. But still…
“He does not,” Miguel deadpanned. “It’s a false equivalency.”
Why was he even trying to protect this kid? Miles didn’t need him to save him from some shady, and quite frankly bad, drug dealer. Hell, given his history and his situation, Miles was the one who should be making sure he didn’t get tempted by the cloying promise of blissful oblivion. 
Now that he thought about it…
No. Never again. 
“I just want to have a little fun,” the dealer said. “First ones free.” Wow, this guy was bad at his job. That was such an old tactic to get people hooked on drugs. It was so obvious. Maybe this guy was being complacent because they hadn’t yet called the police. 
“Ooo,” Miles cooed, drawn in by the promise of free things. Oh, you got to be kidding–
Ah, that was it. He was still just a kid. 
“No,” Miguel said. 
“I mean, it’s free and you never know, maybe we’ll–”
Miguel shot up out of his seat. “No, absolutely not.”
“Aw come on, he’s old enough to make his own decisions,” the pendejo dared to say. 
“He’s a minor!” 
Miles bristled. The playfulness left his features, replaced by a scowl. Miguel didn’t care if he hated being called anything close to a kid; he was. He was a kid and there was no way Miguel was going to let this creep anywhere near him. 
The guy waved it off. “Ah, that doesn’t matter nowadays. How old are you, kid?”
“It’s none of your business,” Miguel stepped forward, shoving Miles behind him. 
“I mean you’re being a bit of a hypocrite. You were blasted out of your mind.”
“I was not.”
“What else would you be doing in a park at 4 in the morning?”
“I’m telling you to back off.”
“Ok, maybe you do need some free samples because you gotta chill, man,” the man so stupidly pressed. 
“I said no!” He loomed over the man. His eyes glowed a dangerous red. His talons peeking out from his skin. His nerves were on edge and his short patience was worn. He bared his fangs and snarled. “I won’t repeat myself again.”
The man tried to shove Miguel away, but he might as well have been a brick wall. “What the fuck?”
Miguel grabbed him by the collar of his jacket. “Maybe I do the world a favor, get some drugs off the street and a guy who doesn’t understand the meaning of no.”
“Fucking freak, let go of me!”
“Is that really the language you want to use right now?” He flashed his extended talons in front of the quivering man’s face. 
Fear overtook anger. “I-I’m sorry! I’ll go! I’ll go! Just let me go!” Miguel scoffed and basically dropped him. He hadn’t realized he pulled the man up closer towards him. He tripped, landing hard on his ass before scrambling away from them. 
Both he and Miles watched the man run off the way he came. 
“That was very unfriendly of you,” Miles said. 
“He’s alive, isn’t he?” Miguel sighed and ran a tired hand over his eyes. “Let’s just go back to the apartment.”
Miles shrugged and followed Miguel as they walked towards the exit. The silence between them grew. The Spot wasn’t here to interject with something dumb for them to comment on and Miles’ taunting playfulness evaporated. They passed by a large fountain as they left, from here it would take… far too long to get back. If he had his suit he could just swing back, unfortunately that was practically a dream at this point. He turned to walk towards the subway. 
“I can make my own choices,” Miles said eventually. 
Miguel blinked at him. “That much is very clear.”
“I don’t need you talking for me.”
“I wasn’t.”
“You did.” Miles stopped walking. “And we could have taken the freebies! I’m sure Mr. Ohnn could have found a use for them.”
“You know he’s not an actual doctor, right?” If anything, drugs were a little closer to Miguel’s field of study.
“I’m just saying, they were free!”
“That’s not the point.”
“Then what is?”
“I just wanted to get us away from that guy.” 
“It’s not him I was worried about.”
“What? Scared of some pills?”
Miguel sighed. “Not all of them are pills,” was all he could think to say.
“If you were that worried about it, then you should have just killed him!”
Miguel rubbed his temples. “Dealers are the lowest rung in the ladder and are often victims of addiction too. Killing him wouldn’t have changed anything.”
Miles scoffed, annoyed at the lecture. “I just don’t get why you were acting like he had a bomb.”
“Miles, I know what that stuff can do.” Miguel said plainly. “It ruins lives.”
“I know that!” Of course, he did. His dad had been a cop and his mother a nurse. 
“I was an addict.” Not of his own volition, but Miles didn’t need to know the details. “Technically, still am because of the serum.”
“Oh.” Miles fidgeted. Perhaps uncomfortable with the revelation, not that Miguel understood why; Miles knew of his regular serum doses. Perhaps because it boosted his powers it didn’t seem much like an addiction. And it wasn’t like he could really do much with this information in way of torture. 
Miguel shrugged and gestured for Miles to get moving. They still had about an hour commute to get back to the apartment. Joy. “You can go ahead. Trains run really infrequently at this time.”
Miles hummed, acknowledging the suggestion, but still followed behind Miguel until they stood at the entrance to the subway. He activated his gauntlets and stuck a hand out towards the skyline. “No scheming,” he said, playfulness returning to his voice. 
Miguel rolled his eyes. He took one step down before pausing. So did Miles. “Oh,” he said. “And don’t do drugs, not unless you want to become like me.”
“Alone, powerless, and miserable.”
“And about to brave the stench of the New York subway for over an hour.”
That wrung a laugh from Miles’ lips.

Spider-Man remains one of the biggest mystery of the moment. Everyone is dying to know who that masked superhero is, his name is all over the news to relate his latest exploits. Tonight wasn’t any different, Spider-Man was on TV to show his last arrest, but this time, something changed: it was the first time he was shown hurt. You were eating with your family when the footage of Spider-Man being stabbed was shown, it was so unexpected that you dropped your cutlery when you saw the scene. There was no way of knowing what happened next, because the video cut, to slide back to the news’ presenter. The rest of the dinner was in a big silence, you could only hear you brother’s sobs because he saw his new hero being hurt.
After dinner, you went upstairs to put your brother to bed, seeing his puffy eyes made you think about what happened and even thought you did your best to tell him that Spider-Man was fine, you knew he wasn’t truly believing you.
You went back to your room, you shivered when the cold air hit you as soon as you opened the door. You often forget to close your window, you never really cared because you knew Spider-Man was always around to watch over the neighbourhood, but after tonight’s incident, you knew nobody was looking after criminals. Switching on the light, you made your way to your window to close it. But you couldn’t help but scream when you turned around and noticed an unknown figure on your bed.
“Honey what’s wrong?” You father asked loudly from downstairs. 
You looked at the red and blue masked superhero, lying like dead on your bed. “N-nothing, I just… Saw a spider on my bed” You replied, bringing your hands on your heart to make sure he was still beating after you almost died of scare.
You ran to your bedroom, carefully closing the door to prevent your parents from seeing what was happening in your bedroom. You slowly walked back to your bed, not being able to look away from the masked superhero but you clearly had no idea of what to do. The only thing you knew was that he was stabbed and probably bleeding to death on your bed, or even worse, he was probably already dead.
His chest was lifting up and you took that as a sign that he was still breathing, but it wasn’t erasing the part that he was still hurt and that he could soon stop breathing if you stay still. You walked closer to your bed, before kneeling in front of it, so your face was on the same level on his. You slowly brought a hand to his neck, to the separation of his face mask and bodysuit, to lift up the mask in order to find out if he was wounded on his face. Yes, just like everyone you wanted to know what was Spider-Man, but you also wanted to make sure he was fine.
Your fingers finally touched the soft red fabric and as you were going to take his mask off, you felt a strong grip around your wrist, making you lose your balance and falling back on your butt.
“Don’t” He grunted in pain, placing his hands on his wounds as he felt a terrible pain rushing through his body.
“I-I’m sorry” you blurred out, blinking your eyes to make sure that everything was real.
“Sorry for barging in like that” He apologized as well, but you could tell that speaking was hurting him. “Saw your open window and I was too tired to-” He tried to explain but you didn’t let him finish.
“It’s okay. Don’t speak” You ordonned as you gave him an old piece of fabric that was laying around. “Apply pressure on your wound” You said as you took your phone out of your pocket. “Now you’re here and I’ll try my best to keep you… alive” you told him, hoping you’d reassure him a little. But in all honesty, he didn’t seemed worried at all, not like you who were shaking because let’s face it, you didn’t know what to do at all, hence the fact that you were using your phone to make some research. You’ve watched some tv shows were they would deal with this kind of plot; someone helping another person wounded, but reality could be quite different.
“What are you doing?” He asked in a low voice.
“Googling ‘how to treat a stab wound’, because as you can see, I’m a student, not a doctor” You snap at him “Sorry, I can come off as mean when I’m stressed” You apologized in a more calming voice. 
You quickly read some articles trying to memorize the most important gesture. You needed to be quick if you didn’t want him to bleed to death, and what was worrying you was that you had no idea if any organs have been touched. “Take off your suit or whatever that is” You asked him and he executed right away.
“Ouch” He grunted every time he was moving an arm.
“Let me help you” You proposed, helping him get off from his suit. “Oh, I’m sorry” you apologized when you had to pull harder because the fabric of his suit was sticking with the blood. You stopped pulling away his suit right under his waist, the wound was visible and you didn’t want to find out what was under his waist. Just thinking about this made your cheeks turn into a slight shade of red. Your eyes wandered over his abdomen, you could only feel his pain when you saw many bruises next to the fresh cut wound. According to his abdomen and some fresh research, no organs have been touched, and you simply need to clean the wound and stitch it.
“Focus. It’s a life or death situation” you mentally said, trying to find the boost of confidence you needed to help him. “Okay, don’t move” You told him before realising what you just said “Yeah, sorry, I know you can’t go very far” You apologized as you got up, you asked him to be quiet as you left your room, closing the door behind you. You tiptoed to the upstairs bathroom, trying to make no noise to avoid many questions from your parents. Taking back your phone, you looked at the listed items you needed to treat Spider-Man’s wound: you luckily found a saline solution, after searching in many drawers, you found a small stitching kit and you mentally thanked your father for being a fan of camping, because he had a kit for any situation. You grabbed some bandage before going back to your bedroom.
“Still alive?” You asked, closing the door with your legs because you hands were full. You carefully dropped the items on your nightstand when you saw the superhero lifting his thumb to tell you that he was still with you.
You gave him one of your stuffed animals, in the movies that’s what they do, they give something they can hold and squeeze if they’re in pain while they’re being stitched up. “You might want to hold on to that” You advised him, and he grabbed it right away, already holding it with a strong grip.
“Thanks”
You sat on the edge of the bed, trying to find the best position so you could treat his wound. The bleeding seemed to have stopped, which was a big relief to you “You know, taking off your mask would be useful, like knowing if you’re turning white because you’re dying” You said as you carefully poured some saline solution on the superhero’s wound. You saw him quiver in pain, making you apologized as you kept cleaning the wound.
“I will never take it off” He let out, once you had finished cleaning the wound, feeling less pain. Of course he couldn’t take off his mask, especially with you around. He wasn’t ready for you to discover his true identity; Peter Parker, also known as your best friend. If Peter could tell you the truth, he’d say that he ended up at your house because he knew you’d be the best person he could trust with that, perfectly knowing you’d help him without asking questions.
“I’m Y/N, by the way” You introduced yourself, you had just read that talking with the injured person was a way to keep him conscious. You were ready to talk about anything as long as it will keep him alive.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Spider-Man” he replied and you chuckled at his words, and you could tell by the sound of his voice that he was proud of himself for joking around like that.
You were about to start the worst part, stitching him up, when you heard a loud knock on your door. “Y/N? Are you okay? What’s with the noise?” You recognized your mother’s voice and you started to freak out. There was no time or place for you to hide Spider-Man, so you knew you had to come up with some lies so your mother wouldn’t come inside. You ran to your door, and opened it slightly, stucking your head in the small opening. “Y/N, it’s late! What are you doing?” She asked, trying to open the door so she could enter.
“I’m… uh…” You hesitated, not finding any believable lie. “I’m watching… porn?” you blurred out, crossing your fingers she’ll believe you. Her eyes were wide open, blinking more than she should, her mouth in a “o” shape.
“Oh my dear… Okay, that is totally normal, if you-” 
“It’s okay. I’ve got it. Good night mom” you told her before closing the door. You were quite surprised with your own lie, and even more surprised that she believed it.
“Nice one” He slowly laughed
“Yeah well laugh while you can, the next step is gonna hurt like hell” You warned him, sitting back to your previous spot. You looked at your phone once again but just reading the many articles made your vision blurry, and you felt like you could throw up at any moment.
“Hey, you can do that” The superhero tried to reassure you. You nodded your head, and started preparing for the following steps. You sterilized the tools you were gonna use, you put on some gloves your mother used when she was cleaning the bathroom. But even the words of encouragement from the masked hero wasn’t enough, you hands were shaking like crazy and you struggled to put the suture material to the needle. But you had to hurry, and when you looked at his wound once again, you felt the boost you needed and you eventually succeeded.
“Don’t hesitate to destroy my stuffed animals and I’m sorry for what’s gonna happen” You warned him, and he nodded, giving you the signal to start. You took a deep breath and started working. The superhero flinched in pain as soon as you pushed the needle in his skin and you bite your lips as you saw him in deep pain. The you twisted your hand clockwise so the needle was coming up on the other side of the wound. You tried your best to have the needle coming out straight across from the first needle hole, as you had read on an article. 
You weren’t even thinking anymore, you just tried to reproduce whatever was on the pictures to your best, and you managed to suture a few inches, hearing the muffled groans of the mask hero. You were completely proud of yourself, but you didn’t had time to congratulate yourself, because you hadn’t stitched the whole wound, so after taking a big breath, you repeated the same steps, still talking to the superhero, mostly to calm yourself and distract you from the butchery that was happening on your bed.
To finish, you used the bandages to wrap and protect the wound. “Promise me you’ll see a doctor soon, I’m not sure how it’ll look in a few hours” you said, as you packed everything back in the suture kit. You quickly realised that you heard no answer and his body hasn’t moved either. “No! No wake up!” you half yelled, shaking him a little to wake him up. You knew he wasn’t supposed to sleep, well you didn’t know but you assumed, because he was just weak and if he was sleeping, his state could get worse, and you frankly didn’t want to have a dead man on your bed.
“I wasn’t sleeping, I was just thinking” he answered, trying to lean against your bed frames and pillows.
“Oh”
“Give me your phone” he asked and you executed right away. He thanked you and typed something before handing your phone back.
“What’s that? A superhero’s number?” You jokingly asked as you looked at the written digits.
“Someone that works with me, tell him to pick me up and he’ll take care of me” He explained in a low voice.
“Why didn’t you give me that sooner?” You asked raising your voice.
“Because I was gonna bleed to death on your bed? And I was too weak to move. At least now I can use my web to get out of your room.” He retorted and you had to agree.
You called the number and talked to a certain Happy Hogan, he seemed pretty worried about the superhero’s safety, but you heard a big sigh of relief when you told him he was fine. And just like you’ve been told to do, you asked Happy if he could come as soon as possible at your address, to pick up the masked vigilante and drop him off to a proper doctor.
“He’ll be there soon” You said as you hung up. You carefully moved your desk chair to bring it closer to your bed so you could keep an eye on your patient. Your alarm clock was showing that it was close to midnight and you could sense that the two of you were totally exhausted.
To keep yourself awake, you grabbed a book from your nightstand and dived in reading. From your position you could still clearly look at the printed letters and survey his breathing. 
You eventually found yourself distracted from your reading, when your eyes were glued to his body. You didn’t had the occasion to take a closer look earlier because of the rushed attempt at saving his life, but you had all the time until Happy shows up.
His chest and abdomen were covered in bruises, some were fresh, others were a few days older and it pained you to see his bruised body, you couldn’t imagine the pain he must be in. Your eyes stopped at his abs and your cheeks went red again, then your eyes went all the way up again to look at his arms. Strong arms, with nicely shaped biceps, you couldn’t lie, it was a really nice view. You stopped at his mask, you let your imagination to find out what person was underneath the mask. 
“Don’t stare” You heard someone chuckle and you felt your face going all red.
“I wasn’t” You mumbled, hiding your face in the book. You couldn’t say if he was mad or happy about it, because the mask was blocking every movement from his face. “Your voice” you blurred out, trying to create a new subject so you could move on from that awkward staring moment.
“What’s wrong with my voice?”
“It’s a weird voice” You replied.
“I know, it’s not my real voice” He explained, he was indeed using a technology that was changing his voice’s sound, to avoid being recognized by his voice, especially with you around, who clearly could recognize your best friend, if he was using his normal voice.
Your phone vibrated and you saw a text from signed from Happy, saying that he was outside. You got up from your seat to take a look at the window, where you a saw a parked car in front of your house. “Looks like your ride is here” you said, turning around to find a already up Spider-Man, he was walking funny due to his injuries but he looked in a better shape than when he came here earlier that night.
“Thank you, for everything” He said, walking to join you next to the window.
“Just did my best” you shrugged “And be careful, okay?” You asked, now that you’ve seen how wounded he was, you couldn’t help but worry about his next fight.
He nodded and threw his web on the other side of the street. “See ya!” He said before jumping out of your window, he landed next to the car, it wasn’t a perfect land but he didn’t tripped and fell, and you were glad to know him safe, in good hands.
You closed your window and changed into your pajamas. As you were about to climb into your bed, you noticed big blood stains on your bed, you let out a long sigh before taking away the bed sheets, tossing them at the other side of your room. You were too tired to change the sheets, and you decided to sleep without sheets and covers for this one night.
You woke up a few hours later when your alarm went on, surprisingly, you weren’t too tired even though you slept less than usual. You hurried to get ready to school, dropped the stained sheets in the laundry machine, and went straight to school. You were dying to find your friend Peter, to tell you all about your crazy night, but at your biggest surprise, he was nowhere to be found. You assumed that he was either late or already in his class, and decided to look for him again during the lunch break.
“Peter, you will never know what happened last night” You exclaimed, a giant smile on your face as you were running to the table he was sitting at, in the refectory “Hey, what’s wrong? You look unwell…”
“Oh don’t worry.. I wasn’t looking and tripped in the stairs back in my apartment building” he lied
“You should call May, she needs to pick you up!” You suggested, worried about your best friend’s health.
“I’m fine as long as I don’t move too much.” He assured you, hoping you wouldn’t add two and two and find out about his secret identity. “Anyway, what did you wanted to tell me?” He asked, changing the subject to avoid any questions.
“Spider-Man was at my house yesterday!” you whispered, bringing your face closer to his, so only him could hear that.
“No way!” Peter faked a surprised face. Of course he knew what happened last night, because he was here! But he really wanted to hear what you were about to say.
“It happened after he got hurt! I helped treating his wound and he stayed a few hours before one of his friends went to pick him up” You explained, you didn’t go through all the details because it was lunch hour and you knew you weren’t ready to have some flashbacks from what you did last night.
“It’s like you saved his life” Peter pointed out, bringing a new smile on your face
“Yeah, I guess you could say that” you said, sensing a feeling of pride rushing through your mind. Before attending you next class, you asked Peter to call his aunt because he needed to rest at least this day, after his fall in the stairs. 
On your way back home, you stopped by at a kiosque to take a look at today’s press articles. There was no update on Spider-Man’s situation in the local news, and most of the newspapers were worried, already planning an hommage, thinking he died somewhere in the street. You knew that he was safe and he was probably resting somewhere, to be at the top of his form to starting catching criminals again.
A few days had passed since you played an improvised nurse for the masked superhero, and he still hadn’t made his comeback, but you were probably the only person not worried about that. You decided to left your window open every night for a few hours, hoping he’ll swing by some night, to tell you that he was back.
He eventually came one night, as you were working on some homework by your desk. He cleared his throat to announce his presence, which made you jump out of scare. But when you turned around towards the noise, you were relieved to find him crouching on your window ledges, holding a stuffed animal in his hands. 
You walked up to him and he handed you the animal “It’s because I almost destroyed one of yours” he babbled. Peter was mentally thanking himself for wearing a mask, so you couldn’t see him blushing.
“You didn’t have to!” You thanked him, holding the stuffed animal closed to your chest and closed to your heart. “I love it” you continued, slightly blushing. “By the way, how do you feel?” You asked for an update on his wound. He managed to come back here so you figured he was feeling better, but you’d rather have his confirmation than making your own assumptions.
“I’m doing awesome, thanks to you!” He began, watching your face going from worried to happy. “Don’t worry,I’m being careful. And if I end up hurt again, I know where to go” He continued “You’re a really good nurse” He said, using his webs to get out before you could say something.
You watched him swinging in the air, holding the stuffed animal pretty tightly, hoping he’d come back soon.

“he saw her first” the words stung you more than you thought. but what if he hadn’t? what if he saw you first? but what if, he loved both you and her?
“why couldn’t he love the both of us?”
“darling, it was 1941. he was this.. scrawny little thing, and no girls ever showed interest in the kid. during training, he was.. brave. he was tough. sure he was a little smaller than the rest of us, but he didn’t give up. not steve. after the serum, peggy was all for him. steve wanted her since he got there” bucky rubbed your arm slowly as he spoke, and all you focused on was playing with peter’s hair. 
“why didn’t he love me more?” your lip quivered, bucky sighing softly and kissing your forehead, swaying the swing softly. “why.. why did i waste all my time and energy, and love, pouring my heart and soul out to this man? the man who i thought i’d marry. i should’ve known he didn’t love me as much as he did her, he looked at that locket so damn much. every time he looked at me, recently, the.. the spark, the love wasn’t there anymore” you run your fingers through peter’s hair, leaning down and kissing his cheek. “at least i have peter. he’s my rock, i love this kid so much” you look at bucky and tuck a piece of hair behind his ear. “and you, buck. i’m glad i have you, you’re the sweetest thing ever, i’m so happy you’re alive, and here with me” you rest your hand on his cheek, rubbing your thumb over his cheek.
“i’m glad i’m here with you, too” your smiles fade, bucky slowly going forwards before peter wakes up frantically, you and bucky pulling away.
“wha- huh- i- oh, hi yn” peter smiles up at you and you stroke his cheek, and other playing with his hair.
“tired, my love?”
“yes, i need to go lay on a bed” he sighs and rests his head on your thighs.
“bucky, can you carry him to the car? that way he can crash at mine and we can talk more?” bucky nodded, picking peter up and peter smiles.
“you smell good. and your metal arm is still awesome” peter said tiredly and you smile, scratching his head. bucky set him down in the back of the car, buckling him and putting the seat down. you and bucky get into the front, bucky driving.
you lay your head back against the headrest, looking at steve still sitting on the bench, talking to sam. a tear fell from your eyes, and you wipe it away. bucky reaches over and intertwined his fingers with yours. you run your fingers over the back of his hand, bringing it up and giving him a kiss on his skin. the apples of his cheeks turn a light pink, a smile on his face. “is... the james buchanan barnes... smiling?” you tease and he laughs, pinching your thigh.
“only around you, doll” he winks and you laugh, holding his hand on your lap as he drives to your house.
it felt empty as you walked into the house. all the stuff you and steve got together, didn’t feel right anymore.
you helped peter upstairs and laid him in your bed, taking off his shoes, pants, blazer and shirt, leaving him in his tank top and boxers. you comb your fingers through his hair and kiss his forehead. “love you peter”
“mm, love you” he mumbled and snuggles into his pillow. you take off your shoes and walk out, closing the door and putting them in your room. bucky knocks and enters the room as you take off your necklace. he sits on the bed, crossing his fingers and putting his hands on his lap.
“buck, you know you have clothes here, right? or you can borrow..” your eyes drop to the floor and he smiles.
“i don’t have to borrow anything, where’s all my stuff?”
“in the drawer” bucky searches through the drawer to find a comfy outfit, while you unbuttoned your shirt. bucky stood up and watched you slide it off of your body, his breath hitching in his throat.
‘she’s just perfect, why couldn’t i have seen her first?’
his eyes go back to his clothes, closing the drawer and keeping his eyes on his clothes. he set them on the bed and looks up through his eyelashes, seeing you were in your comfy clothes now. he looks up and smiles softly at you, looking at the bed and unzipping his jacket. he slides it off his body, pulling his shirt over his head. 
“yn do you have a hair tie?” he asks and you nod, taking it off your vanity and turning around, your eyes going a bit wide. 
“bucky! your chest! your arm!” there was a missing piece to his arm, and cuts all along his chest. 
“it’s fine, my arm still works” he chuckled softly and you raise your eyebrows as it malfunctions and he winces in pain. “okay.. maybe it doesn’t work the best, but it still- ow” he holds his arm and gives you a small smile. you sigh and shake your head, going over to him and sitting him on the bed, looking at his arm. 
“change into your comfy shorts and follow me” he picks them up but accidentally throws it across the room. 
“can.. you help?”
“why is it only malfunctioning now?” he put his metal arm behind him and stood up. you unbuttoned his pants pulled them down, his breath caught in his throat. he steps out of them and you slide on his shorts. 
“i don’t know, but i don’t want to accidentally hit you or peter”
“come on” he followed behind you, thinking over and over how much he wanted to tell you how much he liked you, but you had just broken up with steve, and he didn’t want to tell you just yet, or ruin the friendship you two had. 
you two head into the basement where there was a bunch of computers and tools, bucky taking it all in. “how did i not know this was here?”
“well, you weren’t around much to realize it” you make a joke and he chuckles softly. “alright, can i see the arm please?” bucky detaches it from his body and sets it on the table, turning his absent arm away from you, insecure. “buck, no need to turn away, you’re still the cute goofball with or without your arm” he blushes and smiles, and you grab your tools. he looks down at you working, brushing his hair out his face a lot. 
“having only one arm is so annoying sometimes” he huffs and you smile, combing your fingers through his hair and putting it back in a bun. “thanks sugar”
you smile and go back to working, bucky looking around at all of the things. he hops down and looks closely, smiling when he sees drawings of all of the avengers. “how’d you learn to tinker?”
“tony. i’ve known.. knew.. him since i was 12, and he helped me build this. he taught me everything i know. you need your suit fixed? come see me. i fix them up for every avenger” you smile and bend over, looking deeper into his arm. bucky turned around and saw you bent over, sighing softly. 
“oh my..” he breathes and walks across from you, leaning over and watching you. “impressive, i think i might keep you around” he winks and the two of you laugh. you finish the last things of fixing the arm, picking it up and checking it all out. you walk over and put it on, bucky moving it, smiling when it doesn’t malfunction anymore. “you’re amazing, yn! thank you” he smiles and kisses your cheek, making you blush and smile. 
“anytime, barnes” you whisper softly and look up at him, brushing a piece of hair out of his face. you turn up the volume of the stereo, smiling up at him. “dance with me?”
bucky smiles and you wrap your arms around his torso, hands holding onto his shoulders with your cheek against his chest. bucky’s arms are around your back, rubbing his hand up and down your spine with his cheek on top of your head. 
it was nice, the feeling of bucky. bucky was such a good and loyal friend, you loved him with every bit of your heart. 
bucky’s heart raced as he danced with you, wanting to kiss you and tell you how much he liked you, maybe even loves you. but you just broke up with steve, and probably don’t have feelings for anyone else. he didn’t want to make you love him, he didn’t want to change your mind on steve, he just wanted to take your time.

I’ve written one before where Peter takes the reader to get her wisdom teeth out right here, but I chose Tom for this one bc I love him and no one ever requests for him
We’ve all seen the clip of him after he got his wisdom teeth out using his ice pack as a phone
I’m pretty sure I wrote smthn about it already but I cant find it so maybe not??
Anyways
He’s chaotic on drugs man
He’s terrified to go to the dentist
You have to drag his butt into the car
He screams every time you try to pull him off of the couch
Harrison comes over and is like my man why is there so much screaming and finds you pulling his leg and him clinging onto the arm of the couch screaming his head off
He helps you take poor boi out to the car
Tom swears that he’s never speaking to either of you after this
“I’m moving out and we’re never having another movie night or three am snack run.”
“Then maybe I won’t have to deal with your insane fear of dentists anymore.”
“hEY”
You get him to the dentists office but instead of going inside he slips out of your arms and runs back to the car 
He tries to lock himself inside but you worm your way in there and grab him
“Get your butt into that office or I swear to god I’ll never speak to you again”
He pouts but walks to the office
The receptionist asks him what his name is ten times because it comes out as

“Excuse me sir?”

“One more time?”

“For Christ’s sake his name is Tom Holland we’re here for his noon appointment!”
The receptionist likes you now
“Thank you ma’am.”
You and Harrison sit on either side of him because he keeps trying to escape
The amount of times that you had to grab his arm because he was halfway out the door was unbelievable

Tom is not happy
“So what we’re going to do is numb you and then cut out-”
“The more time you spend describing what parts of my body you’re cutting out of me, the more time you give me to run away.”
The doctor shuts up after that
You hit the back of his head ‘lightly’ for being so rude
They drug him up and let me tell you he is clingy
“Y/NNNNNNNNN, come lay with me in this cool chair!”
“Tom, no, that chair is just for you”
“But I want it to be just for us.”
Harrison is both laughing hysterically in the corner and filming the entire time

The  doctor comes back in with all of his hella sharp tools

He closes his eyes and he’s out

You just laughed
“Did you mean it?”
“Of course Y/N.”
“Then that’s all I care about.”

Was delving into some history about the Jacobite Uprisings while listen to appropriate tunes when I stumbled upon the character of Second-sighted Sandy.
I ramble on sometimes in posts, but I think it's an interesting tale.......
This guy is the stuff of legends, he is said to have been present at the raising of the standard in 1715, sometimes called Mars Uprising. As the name would suggest Sandy is said to have been blessed, or cursed with the ability to see into the future, I will get to that part later, he was still alive when the '45 kicked off and while was too old to fight he watched as the army marched south, out of the Highlands.
In Caithness Sandy was also known for his powers of warding off evil, not a bad arsenal! In the book The Lore of Scotland: A Guide to Scottish Legends there is a tale that an epidemic was affecting all the herds in the area and Sandy was sent for, from his home in the Crofting village of Housty, Sandy immediately set to work ordering all the fires in the neighbouring crofts to be put out. He then erected a large framework with wood, like a door frame and placing a third stake through a hole in the crossbar, telling the men to turn this piece like the old days, as if trying to kindle a fire, he also said that the men had to wear only wool, and that they have no metal on their person, not even a hobnail in their boots. The men set to work and all day tried in vain to kindle a flame, but to no avail. Sandy ordered the crofts be searched as he was sure his instructions were being ignored, word came back all the hearths in the area were cold. 
Sandy disappeared for a while, returning later with, what must have been the tools of his trade, some spell breaking equipment, in silence he set out, with water and silver deving where the evil spirits were. he locals looked on anxiously as he performed this ritual and after a while Sandy jumped up and told the onlookers to follow him.
So off they traipsed till they got to Achscrabster, near Thurso, and where lived an old woman, said to have dabbled in the black arts, Sandy asked the old dear why she hid fire in her house, when he asked it all be extinguished, she denied the accusation.
"Ye needna" said Sandy and went to the spot where a pot lay, inside were a number of live embers, which were duly put out.
The next day the men started the kindling process, this time a spark came with little effort and a fire was started. Sandy got the menfolk to drive the cattle through the smoke, the ground also had been scattered with fairy dust, the cattle were cured and the old lady was banished from the area for bring the bad spirit. The tale is not explained further, but the book goes on to say that folklore during Tudor Times in England said Water and Silver were used by conjurors, or "cunning people" 
That's the only real story I could find about Sandy, other than in the '45 Sandy, by this time too old to fight, still held the ear of certain people, one was, Sandy Don, or  Alexander Gordon of Auchintoul was a Scottish general who fought in the Russian army under Peter the Great, but was also a veteran of the previous uprising in 1715, like Sandy Gordon was by this time too old to fight, but he was the 'Nestor of the Rising' and "invaluable in counsel" Both men would have known each other, Gordon no doubt used Sandy for advice, as the Princes generals sought out the veteran soldier. 
Now as I said Sandy gets no mention in our lore that I could find, after curing the cattle, but he does get mentioned in song, two songs in fact, written about 30 years apart, and this is how we know of his involvement during two Uprisings, the first was said to have been written after the Battle of Sheriffmuir, and is called 'Up and warn a' Willie"  the second verse reads......
But when the standard was set up Right fierce the wind did blaw, Willie; The royal nit upon the tap Down to the ground did fa', Willie.--- Up and warn a', Willie, Warn, warn a'; Then second-sighted Sandie said We 'd do nae gude at a', Willie.------
The two  lines are repeated at the end of the song, which I can't find a recording of unfortunately. While Sheriffmuir  was certainly not a defeat for the Jacobites, it was the end of the uprising. This song was one collected and rewritten by Rabbie Burns later in the century, Burns tells us the Highland expression "Up and warn a' Willie" referred to the Crantara, or a call to arms, but that Lowlanders, continually wary of the Highland clans took the phrase to be the more directly threatening "Up and waur them a'.
The second song is one that a lot of you will know, The Hundred Pipers. Many of us Scots will remember the tune warmly as it was played when when STV was "starting up" in the morning, long before we had 24 hour TV. Anyway I'm rambling again. 
Although 100 Pipers is attributed to Lady Nairn, just like Burns she collected and rewrote many old tunes, again it's the second verse or Sandy pops up.......
O! our sodger lads looked braw, looked braw, Wi' their tartan kilts an' a', an' a', Wi' their bonnets an' feathers an' glitt'rin' gear, An' pibrochs sounding loud and clear. Will they a' return to their ain dear glen? Will they a' return oor Heilan' men? Second sichted Sandy looked fu' wae, An' mithers grat when they march'd away.
And what better way to round the post off than with Kenneth Mckellar belting out the song, remember to turn up full blast to annoy the neighbours, as I've just done at 1.45 am!

Reviewing time for MAG143 /o/
- Aaaaaand the winner of the Ny-Ålesund mini-arc is… Elias. Which seems to be the Trend of season 4.
(MAG135) ELIAS: Fine. Consider it a test – things are… coming, things that will need Jon to be far stronger and more willing to use his connection to our patron. His performance during The Unknowing was… disappointing. I needed a way to force him to harness his ability more acutely than he had before. The coffin was a useful tool; Daisy an adequate bait. BASIRA: Then you messed up. Way he tells it, he doesn’t know how he got out of there. ELIAS: But he did. And his powers were no small part of it. Even if he required some assistance, they were what saved him. And he’s still achieved what no one – mortal, monster, or anything in-between – has ever been able to. He climbed out of The Buried. BASIRA: [DRY SIGH] What was the point? You won’t be getting your ritual off from in here so, what do you need him for? What’s so important you need him stronger? ELIAS: I have been observing a recent increase in people and supplies being moved to the small town of Ny-Ålesund, in Svalbard. An increase which I believe may be linked to a rather desperate attempt, by the People’s Church of the Divine Host, to perform a crude ritual of their own. To bring their… “Mr. Pitch”… into the world.
* Here we have a rare case of Elias potentially straight-up lying? Manuela… wasn’t doing anything; what was up with this “increase in people and supplies”? …… or was that because tourist season was right around the corner. I mean. He didn’t EXPLICITLY say that those were related to The Dark, only that it could be related. (And, after all, he encouraged Basira to see the aurora borealis right after…)
* It’s still unclear whether Elias is indeed in control (did he really know that Breekon was on the verge of delivering the coffin the following episode, back when he talked to Basira in MAG127?) or just Really Lucky and shameless enough to pretend that everything falls into place when it serves his interests… but with The Dark, he was absolutely spot-on that capitalizing on Jon’s fears would do wonders. And he’s been keeping a verrry close Eye on the Archives, apparently: MAG135 was the episode Jon tried to Know if Gertrude had managed to neutralise The Dark’s ritual, and failed, and was a bit worried that they could still be up to something; cue Elias, right after, mentioning that there was a cell still active in of Ny-Ålesund. In the same way, he had previously (at least claimed to have) used the fact that Daisy was alive and prisoner of the coffin as a motivation for Jon to go in, experience The Buried and… apparently get a power-up, or at least learn a bit more to use his own powers (although Elias acknowledged implicitly that Martin setting up the tape players helped with that at least a little).
* It’s still not absolutely sure whether Elias was the one who sent Jared after the Institute (the official target was Jon, but it could have been a decoy; the consequences, at least, where in Elias’s favour since… the Archives team absolutely shattered following the attack, with Martin asking for Peter’s protection, Melanie getting more Slaughter-y, and Basira getting colder and more strategical). But since Jon woke up… he’s been completing the set of experimenting the fears / getting live (or extracted) statements from spooks tied with other patrons / getting injuries. Previously to his coma, Jon had collected:
~ The Web: close encounter with A Guest for Mr Spider when he was 8. (No live-statement from Spook, no official scar… but the lighter and spiders around him, and the Mother-of-Puppets sending Oliver in MAG121 to push Jon to make a decision, make it very clear that Jon has never truly escaped The Web since back then.)
~ The Eye: was it when he witnessed the other boy getting taken by Mr Spider, without trying to help him? Was it because he began working at the Institute? When he began working in the Archives? When he read his first statement, took the first live one? When he got his first nightmare?
~ The Corruption: heavily injured and scarred by The Hive/Jane Prentiss in MAG039/MAG040. (No live-statement, but Jane’s written one in MAG032, and Jon felt it Strongly.)
~ The Spiral: slashed/stabbed by Michael in MAG047, got lost in The Spiral’s corridors in MAG078-MAG079, also went through Helen’s door in MAG101 and now MAG143. Michael-The-Distortion gave his live-statement in MAG101.
~ The Desolation: shook hands (and effed it up) with Jude Perry in MAG089, received her live-statement in the same episode.
~ The Vast: got “dropped” by Mike Crew in MAG091, which possibly messed up his lungs a bit; received/prompted his live-statement at the same time.
~ The Hunt: found by Daisy in MAG091, then strangled/knifed? by her, and also Hunted by Julia in MAG107. Forced (unknowingly) Daisy to give her statement in MAG061, received a partial one from her again in MAG132; received Trevor&Julia’s statement in MAG109.
~ The Stranger: got deceived by Not!Sasha all through season 2, got strangled by Nikola in MAG097, got kidnapped by Nikola for a month (MAG099 to MAG101), got moisturised by Nikola, was in the middle of The Unknowing when it happened, and managed to See through Nikola (MAG119, “I see you”). “Extracted” Breekon’s statement in MAG128.
… Elias was pretty glad about Jon’s progress when he was on the run from the Institute (MAG080: “Well, he was always going to need to fly the nest at some point. Go out and see the world for himself.” “He might die.” “It’s always a danger. Almost always.” / MAG092: “You were doing fine before you forced this little scene. I suggest you continue.”), and that’s when he got New Experiences. And now, in season 4:
~ The End: should have died in The Unknowing explosion but was too “inhuman” for this, and got stuck “on an edge” during his coma, apparently chose to not die (is that why his injuries heal so fast? We’re not sure it’s Beholding’s effect – it’s possible that, like The End’s victims, Jon… just can’t die anymore because he didn’t want to die and was touched by Terminus). Received Oliver Banks’s statement in MAG121.
~ The Slaughter: got slashed by Melanie right after he extracted her bullet in MAG125, has a scar from it on his shoulder. No live-statement, unless Melanie’s story from MAG117 counts…?
~ The Flesh: got two ribs taken in MAG131, received Jared Hopworth’s live-statement in the same episode.
~ The Buried: got stuck three days in the coffin in MAG132, got scraped everywhere from the walls closing in and experienced the full extent of Too-Close-I-Cannot-Breathe there. No live-statement from spook so far.
~ The Dark: “Saw” the Dark Sun and killed it in MAG143, right now unclear whether his eyes got impacted (;; he didn’t see that it was Helen before she spoke…). Received Manuela Dominguez’s live-statement in the same episode.
Which leaves…
~ The Lonely: Peter Lukas is still running the Institute, and Jon is missing Martin-who-is-working-for-Peter-and-tempted-by-the-Lonely a LOT. No live-statement from spook yet but, I mean, Peter is still… “right there” (and not there at all).
Elias had hired Melanie, might have known that Breekon was coming with the coffin (as he began to manipulate Basira right before he visited, and then claimed he had made her leave the Institute in order to let Jon descend into the coffin), pushed Basira(&Jon) to go to Norway to stop The Dark, and asked Peter to work as interim head director while he would be in prison (and there is still the matter of Jared’s commissioner). If he needed Jon to complete the set… then yeah, a lot of his actions have gone in that direction?
- Whatever Elias was aiming for, it Smells like he reached it. Was it for Jon to go through a True Dark Experience, which required to find the very few leftovers of the cult? Jon did, getting in contact with the Dark Sun. Was it to take a live-statement from a Dark avatar? Jon did with Manuela. Was it for Jon to push his powers further? Jon did, by staring directly into the Dark Sun. (Was it for Jon to kill his physical eyes? Status unclear at the moment but… it might have happened without characters realising it yet, because the place was dark.) Was it to get Jon to act as an actual avatar, feeding from people’s fears and traumas and terrorising them? Jon did, at least twice, with Floyd in MAG141 and with the unnamed woman in MAG142 who… might have become a Fear battery for him. Other possibilities: he needed Basira&Jon to be away because something was meant to happen at the Institute and/or with Elias’s legal procedure; or the aim was also to make Martin fall deeper into The Lonely/turn his back on Jon, etc. So many possibilities.
And Elias hasn’t moved from prison (… as far as we know) and yet it feels like he’s just. Winning At This Season.
(Though: I’m expecting Elias to be VERY pleased and insufferable about Jon very casually taking live-statements from unwilling people, who specifically Did Not Want to tell him and had… done nothing to deserve the nightmares and the Beholding-torture… but technically, it’s also possible that Elias might be a bit irritated? Because Jon gave the Institute’s name, back in MAG142, and seemed to have acted immoderately for the past three weeks? Elias was all about “moderation” back in MAG092, and he… himself acted with a lot of self-restraint, technically – he has been an utter asshole on all accounts, but he also used his powers sparingly, and never unprompted: Daisy was threatening him in MAG081, Melanie had tried to kill him twice before he traumatised her in MAG106, and he did the same to Martin as a last resort in MAG118, because Martin was doing everything to push Elias to use his powers on him. Comparatively, Jon… has been worse, in MAG141/142, attacking innocents for his own profit, and now aware of the consequences (and honestly, I’m still ill-at-ease at the amount of violation that was at play in MAG142 – even without taking Jon into account… I felt like it was the most intimately violent testimony we have ever heard in the series…). I don’t really believe that Elias is not currently SO VERY PLEASED by Jon’s behaviour, but it could be a twist that he’s, in fact, a bit cross that Jon went wild without any self-control.)
- Once again: MAG135 was a Very Striking case of Elias seemingly reacting to Jon’s concerns – Jon hadn’t been able to tell whether The Dark’s ritual had been neutralised or not, and Elias came up with the Worrying News about The Dark being active right now, in front of Basira, right at the end of the episode. So Elias might be keeping a close eye (ha) on Jon’s doubts, using them to manipulate him and push him in the direction he wants… and you know what Jon hasn’t hidden at all in season 4 and frequently lamented over?
That he’s been worried about Martin.
I have a bit of trouble picturing Elias giving Martin to Peter because he thought it would give Jon his Lonely scar (… because it would have meant, for Elias, to acknowledge that Martin was becoming extremely important to Jon at the end of season 3, and I’m not sure that Elias knew about it or would… acknowledge it at all. He was extremely contemptuous of Martin back then) but… this is definitely something he might be capitalising on now, and hahahaha ;; Martin… Martin, I don’t think you’re likely to die soon-ish (my bet is rather on Daisy orz), but you’re utterly unsafe…
- MMMMMMMMMMMmmMMMmmmm.
There was no mention of Elias’s acquaintances with Rayner in this episode, nothing about his “friendship” with Rayner – Manuela hadn’t named him in her written statement, either, only designing him as “the Head of your Institute”. If it was something about stoner!Elias’s backstory, I think she would have mentioned him here? I mostly have trouble picturing when it could come up, now that it seems that The Dark’s arc has been wrapped up – their ritual failed, Rayner is dead, most avatars are dead, the cult has been mostly eradicated, their Dark Sun was destroyed (there is still the question of what derailed their ritual, but we don’t need to hear much more about the cultists themselves).
I’m still not “feeling” it on a personal level (… or maybe I simply adore the idea that stoner!Elias is his True Backstory, that it’s not a matter of something having taken on his identity) but it does lend even more credit to the theory that Elias is actually Jonah Magnus, since we got confirmation that Jonah and Rayner knew each other in MAG138… and still nothing about Elias&Rayner on their own.
… in any case, WOW did Elias go out of his way to make sure The Dark would be a Done Deal. Manuela pointed out that the Institute (Gertrude? Or more?) had been keeping an eye (ha) on Hither Green (“Hither Green was, I believe, where your Institute was watching, but Natalie’s efforts were a small and meagre part of the greater effort.”), and it was the first place to fall. Elias tipped the police and sent them after the cultists and Rayner in February 2017 (which he confirmed in MAG135), ensuring Rayner’s downfall when it was already akin to kicking a puppy (Manuela: “I can only assume we were too weak to hide from you, and you struck when Maxwell was vulnerable.”). And now, he sent Basira&Jon to take care of one of the last avatars. It sounds very extra and… personal. (But then… it was hinted in MAG053 that proto-Dark and proto-Eye had History, as conflicting sides.)
- tl;dr Basira:
(MAG135) BASIRA: [DRY SIGH] What was the point? You won’t be getting your ritual off from in here so, what do you need him for? What’s so important you need him stronger?
ARE YOU SUPER SURE ELIAS IS NOT ACTUALLY GETTING HIS RITUAL OFF FROM IN THERE.
(YES, I am aware that this is a LOT of Elias Mentions for an episode in which… Elias wasn’t referred to even once aside from the “son of a bitch”. But. But. He pushed in that direction so hard…
And as Melanie had spat in MAG102, “It’s not just being stuck here, Jon. It’s not just me. He’s manipulating you, he’s manipulating all of us. Can you seriously not see that? He’s pulling all the strings, and I don’t think there’s any other way to stop it.”, and once again, what do you know about the Spiders and what is the exact nature of your relationship with them, Elias.)
- Consequences-wise, the Ny-Ålesund trip is potentially dramatic and tragic and filling me with dread (whatever Elias is aiming for, it feels like it might be coming… closer). But in practice, for the arc in itself? It was the most anticlimactic and hilarious thing ever: I was suspecting that Elias might have been highly misleading and that The Dark’s ritual might have been taken care of already, but I was expecting at least actual threats. Jon had mentioned people wearing the symbol of the Church, when he came back to the Institute, and there was still the matter of The Beast, and potentially the Dark Sun, even without Rayner, which could have been enough to Hurt? But no. The Dark Sun wasn’t usable as a power of mass-destruction. The Beast was revealed to have been slain by the cultists themselves. Rayner was confirmed (unless later twist) to have died to Basira and the other Section 31 officers back in season 2, more than a year ago – also confirming that… Natalie might have killed Rayner herself, when she stabbed a possibly possessed Leo Altman as retribution. The ritual had already failed more than three years ago.
Plus, there was the added Hilarity of Manuela spending the episode blaming Gertrude for their plans crashing, and thinking that she was meant to be neutralised by a powerful enemy… only to be told that Gertrude had died three years ago, and probably not even because of her involvement with The Dark, and that everything that happened might have been (partially) unrelated to Gertrude’s actions.
The episode felt like a kind of respite, ironically, after the build-up of MAG141/MAG142: instead of action-packed and threats and danger and dread, we got a few answers, and more questions. Elements tied in, and some things remained mysterious – but also highlighted.
- I’m…………… so mad……………… Jonny…………………………
So, with Manuela’s mention that:
(MAG143) MANUELA: Instead, we began the search for his successor, a new host for his… continuation. He would regain his strength, and we would plan our next move. It was difficult, though. The approaching culmination had meant Maxwell had not prepared another host, and the search for another vessel was… long and involved. Finally, about eighteen months ago, we found one: a child, whose father had, by coincidence, been directly marked by The Dark.
So, “Callum Brodie”, who got kidnapped by the cultists in February 2017; Elias tipped the police to their location, and the police officers interrupted the ceremony which should have allowed Maxwell Rayner to body-hop:
(MAG073) ARCHIVIST: You said it started with a kidnapping case? BASIRA: Yeah. Callum Brodie. Twelve… twelve years old. Disappeared from his home in Dalston three weeks ago. Sitter was asleep when the mother came home, the front door was open, there was no sign of him. There was no forced entry so it started out as a missing persons case, but they got a witness claiming he’d seen three unknown figures entering the Brodies’ home that night, so it was kicked up to Serious Crime.
Twelve years old in early 2017, only his mother mentioned, and a father who had been touched by The Dark.
(MAG052) ARCHIVIST: […] Martin hasn’t had much luck tracking down Mr. Brown himself. According to [Caroline Brodie], his ex-wife, she left him in 2004, after his dismissal from the prison service pushed him further into alcoholism, and he became abusive. She said she got a single letter from him in 2009, asking for reconciliation, but she never replied. Martin says the letter was postmarked from Waterford in Ireland. But he’s been unable to track Mr. Brown any further.

So Callum’s father was probably Phillip Brown, the statement-giver from MAG052 (the… utterly awful prison guard, who was fascinated by Robert Montauk and described his last months at the prison, including Rayner’s visit), and Caroline left him when she was pregnant or had very recently given birth. I hate.
- A bit curious about what made it so hard to find a new body for Maxwell Rayner…? What were the prerequisites, since Manuela admitted that the fact his father had been touched by The Dark was a “coincidence”…? What are the things making a body Fit for body-hopping into…?
- In the list of things I’m happy (and sad) about: we finally got… a few things about Julia’s mother, and what pushed Robert Montauk to do what he did é_è
(MAG143) MANUELA: I was but newly joined when [Lynette] fled the Church, and Maxwell had her silenced. But I remember her brute of a husband. He fed the beast for us, you know, when first he believed [Lynette] might still be saved. Then, later, we faithful served as his fuel to banish it. But, not for long.
So, Julia’s mother disappeared because she tried to escape (that’s true cultist logic ;;), and Robert initially worked for Rayner, thinking he could save her (hence why he was receiving calls from Rayner for his next missions), before eventually turning against them when he realised there was no hope (hence why his last victim was specifically a cultist). It… even explains why no bodies were found, actually, if he was “feeding” them to the Beast (literally or in a spooky way):
(MAG012, Julia Montauk) “The one question they kept asking me over and over during the investigation into my father was whether I knew where the rest of the bodies were. I told them the truth, that I had no idea. They claimed they wanted to confirm the identities of the victims, which they couldn’t easily do with what was left.”

Also, Jon finally got answers to some of his veerrry old interrogations:

(MAG143) MANUELA: To begin our seven-day feast, we slew the still and lightless beast, and drank of its stagnant blood, submerging the first of the sacrifices in the brackish water it had blessed with its stillness. Maxwell plunged its claws into his chest, freeing the darkness within him, and we waited; and we sang; and we exalted in divine stillness.
… was the brackish water actually the beast’s blood all along? (Though it seems to be the essence of The Dark overall: Halley had been drowned in it, and “Rayner” in himself is mostly liquid, as he tried to take possession of Callum through it, and was shot and killed when it was out.)
I’m !! that it turns out that… the cultists themselves killed the Beast. I wasn’t expecting that. Though it’s probably meant to come back by itself, as Robert Montauk showed:
(MAG052, Philip Brown) “I was tense, ready to fight off Montauk if he decided to make a move, but instead, a soft voice came from out of the darkness. I didn’t recognise it, but I thought it sounded like it came from the old man, and I don’t think he was talking to me. [STATIC] “You didn’t think you could kill it for long, did you?” That’s what it said. […] I could once again see Montauk and the old man sat there, motionless. It didn’t seem like they’d moved an inch, though as I went to take Montauk back to his cell, I noticed that he was crying. I didn’t mention it. I’ll be honest, I was kind of freaked out by the whole thing.”
(MAG143) MANUELA: He fed the beast for us, you know, when first he believed [Lynette] might still be saved. Then, later, we faithful served as his fuel to banish it. But, not for long. That’s the thing about Darkness, isn’t it? You try your hardest to eradicate, flood your surroundings with light, but it’s always there at the edges – waiting for the glow to weaken, to return and cover you forever. Robert Montauk discovered that the hard way. And someday, so will your Gertrude.
So yep, it will… come back one day, probably.
(- Fun stupid facts! MAG052, describing Robert Montauk’s death… had been interrupted by Basira delivering a tape to Jon. So we had a small meta connection between her and The Dark, AND with The Eye, since the tape she delivered was labelled “Alexandria” and was one of the rare Beholding statements, that Jon listened to in MAG053, about the old Serapeum, which might have been a proto-Archive.)
- Manuela had some Drive too, in her reverence and grandiloquence, but I was mostly Conceal Don’t Feel / “DON’T YOU DARE TELL HER” all through her statement because. She was assuming that Gertrude was still alive and coming for her. And aouch, might have been Harsh to learn that no, these two randos are not here on behalf of Gertrude, but have been scrambling through things for the past two years and a half after she was killed.
- It’s interesting (and also very funny.) how The Dark is simultaneously… very threatening, and not that much. Manuela was incredibly scary in her statement, in MAG135, mostly because of the concept of her “fear battery”? The way they proceeded with Julia’s mom was really… heart-wrenching (you can’t leave and stay alive for long)? They killed so many people for their ritual, just like The Stranger?
(MAG143) MANUELA: We had hundreds of sacrifices prepared and ready, plunged into darkness and terror for days on end. […] I began to drown the sacrifices. Too soon, perhaps. But it worked, to keep it going, and keep it together.
… but at the same time.
(MAG143) MANUELA: Maxwell had always had the visions, the drive. Whatever was inside him pulled him to this end, to this great undertaking, like a magnet, and I was so very honoured to be his right hand…! Natalie and the others followed, but they did not truly understand. […] BASIRA: You said the Dark Sun was still here. MANUELA: [SNORT] Fine. If you’re so keen to take everything, undo the work of centuries… it’s just through that door. [FOOTSTEPS] BASIRA: Jon? ARCHIVIST: [SIGH] [STATIC:] How dangerous is it? MANUELA: Only myself, Maxwell and Natalie could even look upon it. It will annihilate you both in an instant.
We know that Manuela had joined the cult around the time Julia’s mother tried to escape it (“I was but newly joined when [Lynette] fled the Church, and Maxwell had her silenced.”), and we know that Robert Montauk was active for five years before being arrested in 1995, which means that Manuela met Rayner around or shortly before 1990. So, she has been in the cult for more than 25 years at this point. Meanwhile, she was looking down on Natalie, who was still Amongst The Big Ones, and we know from MAG025 that Natalie:
(MAG025, Mark Bilham) “That changed last October, when Natalie’s mum died. I don’t know how it happened, exactly. Heart failure, I think. It was sudden, I know that much, and it hit her hard. I mean, obviously it did, it was her mum, but I think… I think she lost her faith. […] That month was sad, but it’s not what Kathy wanted us to talk to you about. No, it was what happened afterwards. It was after Natalie found her new Church. It was Kathy who told me about it. This must have been about two months after Natalie’s mum died. I must have asked how she was doing, if she was feeling any better. Kathy said that, yeah she was. Apparently, she’d found a new congregation and seemed to be getting some comfort there.”
… had joined the cult in December 2014. Three months before the ritual. HOW do you take them super-seriously when you learn that one of their highest-ranking people had JUST joined the cult and was just very enthusiastic and also dramatically off-the-mark about what was happening.
(- Yes, I’m saying this, fully aware that shit, Jon has been Head Archivist for less than three years (… and even less if you take his coma into account), is already The Archivist, is deep in spooks… while Gertrude had been active for around fifty years, and at least aware of rituals for forty years, as she mentioned in MAG137 about The Slaughter. It’s not about time, it’s about… willingness and compatibility? And Jon went in very deep, very fast.
But if Natalie was able to look at the Dark Sun in merely three months… we’re a bit lucky that she died during the Section 31 operation, before she could have ascended to more?)

An increase which I believe may be linked to a rather desperate attempt, by the People’s Church of the Divine Host, to perform a crude ritual of their own. (MAG143) MANUELA: Natalie and the others followed, but they did not truly understand. Not truly, with their talk of “peace” and “unity” and “Mr. Pitch”. A friendly name, to try and hide from a concept they couldn’t grasp.

Because literal crusades may have been used in the past as a pretext to attack the old Serapeum in Alexandria, according to MAG053? And on that note:
(MAG143) MANUELA: Our congregation in Alaska disappeared the next day, and Russia as well. One by one, it seemed our scattered Whisperers Of Night were falling, and holding it together, keeping the lightless world anchored to our star, bringing it closer… was becoming an almost unbearable strain on Maxwell.
(MAG053) GERTRUDE: And there’s even one, unnamed contemporary historian, that describes the mob attacking the Serapeum not as Christians, but using a phrase which roughly translates as: “Those who sing the night”.
I think “Whisperers Of Night” might be a different translation for the same original term as “Those who sing the night”, like “Circus of the Other” and “Another Circus”? =D If so, nice touch!
- One of my Biggest Questions regarding the Magnus verse has been around Gertrude’s time of death – pet-theory of mine being that she might have… not actually died when ~blood was found in her office~ and that she went off the radar for a while before Elias caught up to her.
We got a few more details in the chronology, and characters insisted to put her death around the time of the failed ritual, so in March 2015… while we know it can’t have been The True Story because Gertrude recorded a statement in April. Chronology-wise:
* March 11th 2015: Mark Bilham managed to escape the ceremony happening in the Hither Green Dissenters Chapel, reported Natalie Ennis’s disappearance to the police when they arrived. (MAG025)
* March 14th 2015: “Antonio Blake” (Oliver Banks) gave his statement to Gertrude, explaining that she should die soon – he saw this “the night before last” (so the night from 12th to 13th March) and there is around ten days before it should happen, which would predict her death for around March 22nd / March 23rd 2015. (MAG011)
* March 15th 2015: according to Elias, when he went to the Archives, “Gertrude wasn’t there, but her desk was covered in blood. […] The police tested the blood and confirmed the DNA matched to Gertrude, though I don’t know why they had her on file. They judged there to be almost a gallon of blood spilled, far more than the human body can lose and survive so, I assumed she was dead”. (MAG040)
* March 16th 2015: “four days before the eclipse was due”, Maxwell Rayner felt a “disruption” (given by the collapse of the ritual at Hither Green); the different cells of The Dark began to disappear. (MAG143)
* March 20th 2015: a total solar eclipse happened in Ny-Ålesund and, according to Manuela Dominguez, should have marked the culmination of The Dark’s ritual. Basira hadn’t given the date but had already highlighted that it might be linked to Edmond Halley and John Flamsteed and Halley’s comet. (MAG108, MAG143)
* April 4th 2015: Gertrude records a written statement about The Stranger, mentions that she’s not in a good shape (“I had hoped I’d have a chance to recover. I can still barely stand.”), though, in context, it could be due to her theft of the gorilla skin from the Stranger gang… or because she purposely injured herself and lost too much blood recently. At least, still alive and kicking when she doubly shouldn’t be – both according to Oliver’s prediction and to Elias’s declaration. (MAG087)
* May 15th 2015: a scream is heard at the Hither Green Chapel, but the police find nothing. Jon is absolutely clear on the date (“About a month after this statement [April 19th 2015] was given, on May 15th 2015”) and points out that “according to the official file, May 15th 2015 was the day Gertrude Robinson, my predecessor, passed away.” (MAG025)
… And I realised, thanks to this post, that. Actually, March 22nd 2015, which was the day Evan Lukas died “from heart failure” (MAG013: “Congenital, they said. Some problem with his heart. Always been there, but never diagnosed. No warning. One in a million chance.”)… was the day Gertrude was supposed to die.
I have no clue re: what happened to derail The Dark’s ritual – I don’t think that it simply failed because twist, no ritual can ever successfully be carried to completion, since that would lower the stakes too much at this point in the series. But the way Manuela described it:
(MAG143) MANUELA: I… don’t know exactly when it all started to come undone. I think Maxwell first felt the ripples four days before the eclipse was due. [SIGH] It was strange… Like a pause in the hysterical whimpering and fruitless prayers of the sacrifices. And a ripple that was felt through the waters, and the stagnant blood that bound us. A disruption. We would later learn that this was the collapse of the ritual at Hither Green – but it was only the first. Our congregation in Alaska disappeared the next day, and Russia as well. One by one, it seemed our scattered Whisperers Of Night were falling […]. And then… it stopped. It just… stopped. All at once, that loving embrace was stripped from us, and it began to retreat, to recede back into the place that it had come from. We were so close…! … We were so close… […] We left, half of us dead, and the other half destroyed by coming so close to the true essence, [SIGH] and being denied. In my most wretched hours, I wonder… perhaps it was us…! Perhaps… we simply lacked faith. We weren’t worthy…! The world wasn’t worthy. But… no. We were ready. We had earned our Dark rapture. And we were robbed.
It feels, a bit, like a slow degradation, with cells dying one after the other, isolated from each other. I wonder if Evan Lukas (or the Lukases) were involved somehow, for that one…?
Anyway, this is still very much a Mystery so… we might get a clue another time. Maybe thanks to Adelard Dekker, in person or through an old letter?
- I’mmmmmmm thinking that we might get an answer re: Gertrude’s last activities / what happened specifically that made Elias kill her / what was happening between them… because the subject of Gertrude’s last activities and death had reemerged lately, with… some indecision from characters:
(MAG135) ARCHIVIST: [SIGH] I’ll keep digging. If there is another ritual upcoming, I’ll need all the information I can get on it. I can’t believe Gertrude didn’t have a plan for it. I hope I’m just being over-cautious, that it’s already long since dealt with, but… we’ll see.
(MAG139) ARCHIVIST: Statement ends. [INHALE] … Nice to see Gertrude [EXHALE] also used to get a lot of threats. So far it doesn’t seem that any went… desperately well. Except for Elias, of course. But he didn’t threaten, did he? He just… did it.
(MAG143) MANUELA: [HUFF] Coward. So, how did she do it? It’s been three years, waiting, guarding this place without hope. At least, do me the courtesy of telling me how she collapsed our moment of triumph. ARCHIVIST: You really don’t know, do you? MANUELA: Know what? ARCHIVIST: … Gertrude’s dead. She died right around the time of your ritual. MANUELA: Ha! So: stopping us took everything she had. BASIRA: You wish. She was murdered. Unrelated, as far as we can tell.
(Still hoping that Elias&Gertrude’s last interaction was recorded? We already heard gunshots in a few episodes, this one included, and we even got Leitner’s Extended Sounds Of Brutal Pipe Murder live. Wouldn’t be “too shocking”.)
- I’ll be laughing for months and months about the fact that:
(MAG143) BASIRA: [SIGH] So, what, this was another waste of time? What, no Church, no Dark Sun? … I’m gonna kill that son of a bitch…!
… Basira canonically called Elias a “son of a bitch”. Which. I mean. SUPER FAIR. But.
(A bit rude for Elias’s mother, Basira; I’m sure that, even if she was utterly awful, she wasn’t absolutely responsible for Elias’s… everything.)
- And a big “IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHHHH” for cop!Basira handling Manuela, leading the interrogation (telling Jon when to step in with his powers), and using Daisy’s weapons.
- Jon demonstrated multiple powers in this episode… but nothing was a True Novelty nor out of line compared to season 3 – except for the way he pressured Manuela into giving her statement.
* Actually, there were a few parallels with MAG096, and the way Daisy&him had caught and interrogated “Sarah”: Jon using compulsion, a few jokes thrown around, Daisy-or-Basira handling the physical aspect of it.
* Jon did casually admit to compelling random people… but he had already Done That in MAG107, when needing information:
(MAG107) ARCHIVIST: [SNIFF] [EXHALE] The… the hospital was… The hospital was interesting. It’s all very well being able to get people to answer your questions, but if they genuinely don’t remember something, it’s not always as useful as it seems.
(MAG143) ARCHIVIST: [SIGH] I don’t know. Everyone back at the research base seemed… pretty sure this place was empty. BASIRA: And you believe them? ARCHIVIST: They weren’t lying. BASIRA: Wait, you… did your sp–… ARCHIVIST: Oh, yeah, no, I, I don’t think they noticed. BASIRA: So they were serious. It’s been empty for… what, a year?
… Still not Super Great but at least… not new and, presumably, consequences-less apart from (lack of) ethics considerations. (MAG103 was worse in that regard and, hopefully, without much consequence for the person Jon had compelled.)
* Jon was also… not frantic during the interrogation? Basira was the one leading it, and Jon compelled when she prompted him too, like it had happened with Breekon:
(MAG143) BASIRA: Who are you? MANUELA: [GRUNTING] BASIRA: Jon? ARCHIVIST: [STATIC:] Who are you? [STATIC INCREASES, PRESSURING.] MANUELA: [PANTS] … Manuela. Manuela Dominguez. (Which. Is indeed a useful ability to use against monsters/dangerous spooks but… still, Basira won’t be the one to hold Jon off on it. It works as long as they’re dealing with killers and dangerous people, if it’s about finding ways to prevent them from causing harm… but I’m a bit afraid that Basira indeed makes use of Jon’s abilities, and seems to be… so encouraging when it can serve her.)
* It’s honestly the pressure he now uses to “get” statements that makes my stomach twist (in a bad way)? It’s been three episodes in a row that the person clearly didn’t want to tell their story, and were forced to, and we got ample descriptions in MAG142 of how… deeply violating and shattering it was for the victim:

You thought the best way to find it was by… slurping it out of his brain? ARCHIVIST: He didn’t exactly seem inclined to volunteer the information.
(MAG142) WOMAN: […] and he says he wants my story. He says he needs to hear what happened to me. And I… I wanted to tell him to–to–to to go away, I–I wanted to–to to kick him, and run. But… I… [SHAKY DUMBFOUNDED EXHALE] I sit down. … And I start to tell him… everything. About the job, about the collapse, ab–about the hand… And more than I told you, even, and–and… as I do, it’s… it’s like I’m there again. Like I can feel it grab my ankle, a–a–a cold, dead hand, and I just…! I just can’t stop talking, like I cannot shut up…! MARTIN: A… [RESTRAINED EXHALE] Are you alright? WOMAN: No?! No, I’m not! (That’s a double-standard: it feels Fictionally Satisfying when he does this to a serial killer, because uh, had it coming, you can bear some unpleasantness in your life, too. But… same as last week: I’m still too upset about MAG142, even if Jon feels bad about it in the future, or is called out on it… I’m still a bit reluctant at the idea of being sad for him over anything, now that I know he harmed MAG142’s woman so badly, and that it will be likely a permanent state of trauma for her…? Still not sure Jon can still work as a protagonist at all after that? Though this episode offered a nice balance for me: I didn’t feel like I was meant to Feel many things, but mostly think and observe; there was something a bit more mechanical, even when Jon mentioned that he thought he was going to die… probably because he was talking with Helen, who was also detached. But I’m curious to see how these things will be handled once Jon is back at the Archives, and now that both Martin&Basira know about it…)

- Same thing as Jon forcing Dangerous Spooks to spill it all out: it feels kind of satisfying to have Helen… swallowing them in her corridors – they had it coming, and it means they won’t be hurting people anymore, and as long as it’s Spooks eating Spooks, they can do whatever between themselves, I’m not As Emotionally Invested And Sad/Upset as when innocent people get hurt :w

Though: Helen was waaaay more instable in this episode than previously? She sounded carnivorous and playful, a bit like a cruel child, here, while she was… colder and a bit more detached back in MAG131 and MAG115. Is it also because she’s not in the tunnels? Or because she’s settling in as The Distortion and getting more… all over the place…? But still coherent so far – since Helen repeated that “I told you – I’ve decided to help” and is sticking to it? (How long will that last…?)
- Will Manuela and Jon still have the dreams, or will it be “cut” because Manuela is inside of/being digested by the Distortion now? According to MAG120, the door was closed and Jon wasn’t opening it in his dreams, so… (And if there are dreams: will they be pitch-black and absolutely useless.)

Her spontaneous reaction was to try and discourage him from doing Something Dangerous And Potentially Deadly. So: she cares, she doesn’t… want him to die, even though she witnessed him grabbing Floyd and forcing him to tell his statement and condemning him to the nightmares that she herself used to be plagued with. Which means that… yeah, a lot of her dryness, of her cautiousness and calculation, has been… less sincere than she was pretending? That she tried to behave a certain way, while feeling another – that she still has sympathy for Jon and doesn’t think he would be better off dead, even though she knows that The Eye still has its chance ritual-wise, even though she saw that Jon’s powers have been all over the place since he woke up. And I’m… surprised and stupidly hopeful that he did realise right away that he had crossed a line / wronged Basira / hurt her feelings? What the HELL happened with the live-statements from MAG141/MAG142, for Jon to… Listen, I can’t call Floyd and that woman “statement-givers” when the stories were forcefully grabbed and torn out from them, and Jon didn’t even seem to realise that he was hurting them so deeply – although he DID acknowledge that Floyd would get nightmares (but his “And I am sorry about that.” didn’t sound like he was sorry AT ALL).
There is still the mystery of what happened shortly before the trip because, really, season 4 had not been going in the direction of Jon getting desensitised to random people’s sufferings (and, for example, only caring about his assistants)? Like, at all? He was very detached about Gertrude’s methods and horrified about what had happened to Jan Kilbride (MAG130: “Even so, and… leaving aside the matter of Gertrude’s actions for a moment…” / MAG133: “So use me. Because if you go it alone, you are going to die. Even Gertrude worked with people. We make bad decisions when we don’t communicate…”), he was uncomfortable about the fact that he was aware that other people were still trapped in the coffin, although he hadn’t been the one to put them there (MAG135: “… Is locking it up the right thing to do? There are other people in there. And Daisy and I got out, but– … No, I, uh… I can’t think about that. Even if I could somehow be sure of recreating our escape, I–I can’t save everyone that’s been taken. I–It’s not my job to try, I– And I can’t spend another three days in there, I just… I need to let it go.”), he had mentioned to Daisy that he was ready to suffer as long as it meant not losing anyone (MAG136), doubting so much (MAG139)… and then he just. Switched? What happened, for him to suddenly sound much more mechanical…? As mentioned with previous episodes, was it due to his attempt at peeking through The Lonely…? Was it because the Institute/Archives have a sort of stabilising effect on him, and he was outside in all three cases…? Was it because Jon chose, very deliberately, to power up through live-statements in order to be ready for The Dark, and is… drunk with power right now?
- At the very least: Jon has sounded significantly… more detached? In MAG141/142. Still able to have various inflections, but there is something more… matter-of-fact than in previous episodes? A bit closer to how he sounded in season 1 – though more fast-paced? And sounding tired, but not in the same way as previously in season 4. Not exactly snappy but…
(MAG143) BASIRA: [SIGH] Eyes peeled. [SILENCE] ARCHIVIST: … Was that a joke? BASIRA: Yeah. [SILENCE] Any clue where everyone is? […] Don’t move. [GRUNTS, PANTS. A SPIT.] ARCHIVIST: Oh! … Charming.
… dryer, instead of the previous softness? He was complaining about having so many doubts, in MAG139, and in the last few episodes, he’s been… going along with the flow without much hesitation. Not pleased but not startled nor hesitating. So what happened…
(- Still casually self-destructive/going for the potentially Lethal options, though, and Daisy had been spot-on when highlighting to Martin that he was “self-destructive” – something Jon had himself acknowledged without using the word, at the end of MAG136.
There might have been multiple feelings at play when he marched on to watch the Dark Sun: their goal was to neutralise The Dark/make sure they couldn’t succeed with their ritual, and taking it out seemed like the wisest option; curiosity/desire to see it; and… grabbing an occasion to die, if it were to happen. He did acknowledge that last one:
(MAG143) HELEN: … How was it? ARCHIVIST: Mm? HELEN: Looking upon The Dark. ARCHIVIST: I thought I was going to die. HELEN: You seem to think that a lot. I remember when you thought you were going to die at my threshold. ARCHIVIST: … Yeah.
And he accepted, right after, to go through Helen’s door again, which really doesn’t scream like the action of someone with Self-Preservation. And he was still afraid, if his breathing is any indication, although… quieter and less melancholic/shaking than when he had gone into the coffin.)
- Jon’s way of just. Going straight for the statement, in MAG141/MAG142, makes me think of a certain Beholding creature and:
(MAG053) GERTRUDE: My biggest concern right now is whatever creature Mr. Heller encountered down there. It was… 56 years ago. But if it’s still alive, I should be careful. What was it? A guardian of some sort or perhaps… perhaps it too was… once an Archivist.
(MAG092) ARCHIVIST: So it’s… it’s back to breadcrumbs, and statements, and risking my life talking to things that barely remember how to be human anymore? […] Am I… Elias, am I still human? ELIAS: Jon, what does human even mean? I mean, really? You still bleed, you can still die. And your will is still your own, mostly. That’s more than can be said for a lot of the “real” humans out there. … You’re worried about ending up like that thing, lurking in the dirt under the streets of Alexandria? Don’t be. Just do what you need to, and you’ll be fine. Understood?
I mean, YEAH, some things have changed a bit since then (… can Jon still die nowadays?), but. Still. He’s coming a bit closer to Creature Kept In Tunnels And Thirsty For People With Spooky Stories…

(MAG143) MANUELA: We had been worshipping in the deepest dark, and yet, when it crossed the sun, I felt it roll over us, like a cooling balm on a summer’s day, plunging us into a deep, black void, far more complete than I can ever convey with mere words. It was more than beautiful: it was divine…! And as we unveiled our new and absent sun, the sacrifices who remained screamed, and fell in holy agonies, and the world of endless night we had been promised began to pour in, shining out and all around us. […] ARCHIVIST: [BREATHING LOUDER AND MORE SHAKINGLY.] [UNSEALING A METALLIC DOOR; HEAVY DOOR SLOWLY SLIDING OPEN.] [CREAKING, SPARKLER-LIKE STATIC SATURATING THE RECORDING.] ARCHIVIST: It’s… beautiful… MANUELA: [DISTANT, PANTING] … No… NO!!! [STATIC SUDDENLY DISAPPEARS.]
So, for Jon, it was just “beautiful” – and not “divine”.
And he literally killed it with his eyes.
And there were a few mentions of the fact that the word “see” now has different meanings for Jon, in this episode:
(MAG143) ARCHIVIST: I never said we were. Just said I couldn’t see anybody. BASIRA: Oh, I thought you meant like… “See”–see. ARCHIVIST: Uh… no. BASIRA: We need to figure out proper terms for this st– [SLIDING NOISE] … What are you doing? […] Ask her how we can destroy it. ARCHIVIST: I know how. … I just need to see it. BASIRA: “See” as in…? ARCHIVIST: As in… actually see it.
So.

Jon wasn’t able to tell that Helen had arrived, at first, which meant… he hadn’t seen her. And the shattering sounds when Manuela fled may have meant that they couldn’t see anything anymore (torches? Basira said there were no lightbulbs). And Jon was, or sounded hurt. And it didn’t feel like they knew where the others were.
(MAG143) ARCHIVIST: [PANTING] No, I–I’m, I’m okay… [SOUND OF GLASS SHATTERING.] ARCHIVIST: [SCREAM] BASIRA: Get down! [FOOTSTEPS RUNNING AWAY.] [TWO GUNSHOTS.] ARCHIVIST: [PANTING] Basira…?! BASIRA: I’m alright, just… just one second…! ARCHIVIST: Hum… BASIRA: Stay here. ARCHIVIST: Look, I’m okay, I can help…! [FOOTSTEPS LEAVING] [SILENCE ONLY COVERED BY THE MACHINERY SOUNDS, AND HIS PAINED GRUNTS AND LABOURED BREATHING.]
So. Did Jon just get a Dark scar and… killed his eyes while killing the sun…?
(I missed that but, apparently, Jonny recently mentioned he was working on disability representation, and it had been highlighted by a few persons that Jon-going-blind could easily feel like cheating because he has other powers to… compensate/replace his actual sight (the classic trop of the disabled superhero that isn’t actually disabled), but. The end of the episode was a bit confusing and leaving room for Jon or Basira (she came back really soon…) to… have actually messed up their eyes, and not having realised it yet because the whole place was still in the dark.
And what would happen, re: written statements, if Jon were to lose his eyesight? Would he still “feel” the statement anyway or… would he be unable to read them anymore, and thus forced to seek live-statements to feed the Eye and/or to rely on the assistants reading them – when he was on the run back in season 3, he barely read anything during two months, but Martin&Melanie did and Elias had pushed in that direction, so it might have been having an effect on him too…?)
- … What is next? What will happen, now that Jon&Basira are apparently meant to come back to the Archives right away?
* The fact that Elias had been Basira’s secret intel might come out of the bag pretty soon:
(MAG143) BASIRA: [SIGH] So, what, this was another waste of time? What, no Church, no Dark Sun? … I’m gonna kill that son of a bitch…! ARCHIVIST: No, I… [INHALE] I think it’s here. I, I can feel it, like a… a hole in my mind. […] MANUELA: That’s… I– … Then why are you here? Maxwell is dead. The ritual failed. What’s left? ARCHIVIST: [INHALE] A good question! [EXHALE] Basira? BASIRA: You said the Dark Sun was still here.
Either Basira is going to be Beautifully Enraged at Elias, either… yeah, it’s coming. And Basira got totally manipulated and used the whole way…………… (Another question being: has Jon been suspecting that Basira’s intel was Elias for a while, and had been hiding his suspicions to try to see what Elias was aiming at…?)
* Will Jon be allowed to visit Elias, now…? I mean. We had no mention at all that Jon had even asked to visit Elias – but Elias had made sure that Jon couldn’t visit him, because ~ he’s at a very delicate stage right now~ (MAG127), though since then… a few things have changed. (It’s still unlikely given her legal status, but I’m very curious about the possibility of Daisy having a one-on-one with him at some point…)
* There will be the matter of… Jon’s actions re: live-statements. Were the woman and Floyd the only cases, or are they other victims? How many? When did it begin? Why – was it pure instinct, or partially deliberate from Jon? And are the assistants supposed to manage him, and how…? If not Basira, who, in the Archives, will be able to tell Jon off, if he’s now casually hurting people? Martin was prompt to find excuses for him (even after he listened to this woman’s story! He had trouble putting the blame on Jon, and was still considering Jon’s feelings more than his victim’s!) and sounded ready to fly to Norway when he learned that Jon was on a dangerous mission. Daisy has a clear head about responsibility and regrets/remorse and hating the harm she did, but she also… heavily presented Jon as a victim in MAG142. Basira saw Jon forcing Floyd to tell his story, knowing the consequences, and still had the reflex to protect him a few days after. I’m a bit worried that none of them would be ready to truly… shackle Jon or confront him about MAG141/MAG142…? Although there is still Melanie who… will probably take none of his shit, if she hears about this.
(I’m legitimately curious about how she would react, were she to listen to MAG142’s tape. She doesn’t have the bullet anymore, so probably not going into a Slaughter rage, but… of all of the assistants, I think Melanie is likely to have the most Intense reaction if she learns about Jon’s current actions.)
* More live-statements means more dreams, and there is still the matter of MAG120’s tape: Elias was addressing Jon directly in that one, it was supposed to be a message, at least towards the end. Did Jon listen to it already? Will he find it soon? … Will we get another statement from Elias about Jon’s dreams, now that there are… more…? (Did Jon’s overall behaviour change in them? Is he still horrified or… not anymore/just plainly curious faced with people’s suffering…?)
* Re:Melanie, there is still the matter of her spending a lot of time away and being “quiet” since she began therapy. It could mean something awful (Web/Annabelle being the prime suspect)… but it also could be. Actual good therapy, working wonders for her.
* Rituals-wise: the status of Corruption is unclear, and we still don’t have anything about Vast (unless MAG141 was touching to it)… and as long as Martin hasn’t pooled his resources with the others, Jon can’t know that The End and The Web are presumably not in the run for a ritual, nor that The Lonely has already failed. So there are still researches to be done, for him, in those directions. (… Though maybe Martin could have told Daisy right after the end of MAG142’s recording…)
* I wonder if Daisy will tell Jon that she spoke with Martin, that Martin was worried about him…? That it’s still possible to talk to Martin…?
Title for MAG144 is out and is…………………… interesting……. If we hadn’t had the Coffin mini-arc so recently, I’d have said Buried, but it’s unlikely, so… The End, maybe? Something related to MAG065 and/or about technology and/or about tape recorders? Something about The Web’s intentions? Vast thing, and they’re digging Mike Crew out of his grave?? Lonely one and it’s actually about the graveyard/their failed ritual? I’m mostly considering Beholding stuff – Gertrude’s notes, Elias’s plans, the tunnels under the Institute and/or the thing in Alexandria and/or Schwarzwald, the specific book that Albrecht had first sent to Jonah, or a Jon first-person statement (à la MAG040 and MAG080) about the last three weeks? I don’t know but… it’s an interesting title.

Rule of Rose: Item List
I’ve built on cheviot‘s (proboards) extensive item list by adding the unused Japanese items. The complete listing is behind the cut!
In their words:
Unlike most games, there are many items you can never get, as any find target is considered an item. It appears a large number of weapons, (sickle, hammer, mop, fork, shovel) were deleted during production of the game. Also a different costume (Robot, special weapon Master Wrench) seems to have been done away with not to mention a whole other chapter and another diary ("J's" diary). There were also two other butterflies , (butta & buttb. The blue butterfly is buttc) a dead rat, a key for the radio room and Record Room key as well as two additional keys... and lots of other odd items. A brief explanation- the first column is the numeric code that represents the item in the game. the second column is the item name. The third column identifies properties of the item and the fourth column is the item description.

David Bowie: Map of London locations connected to his life

David Bowie is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
If he was still alive, he would have turned 74 on January 8, but instead this year marks the fifth anniversary of his death from cancer.
His legacy includes 29 albums, almost as many movies and numerous awards.
He was also born and raised in south east London.
We’ve tracked down some of the locations around the area with important connections to the superstar.

Burnt Ash Junior School, Rangefield Road –  While at Burnt Ash Junior School from 1955 to 1958, David was in the school choir and played the recorder.
Bromley Technical High School, Oakley Road, Keston –  Now known as Ravens Wood School, a young David studied here from 1958 to 1963 and particularly enjoyed art classes (and gained his only O Level in the subject) under teacher Owen Frampton, the father of rock musician Peter Frampton.
School of Art, Croydon – Bowie briefly studied at School of Art in Croydon (now part of Croydon College) after leaving school.
24 Foxgrove Road, Beckenham – Now known as David Bowie, he moved to Beckenham from Kensington in March 1969 and lodged with Mary Finnigan.
The Three Tuns pub (now Zizzi), Beckenham High Street – Bowie and Finnigan set up a folk club, which later became Beckenham Arts Lab at the Three Tuns in May 1969.
Croydon Road Recreation Ground, Beckenham – Bowie and the Arts Lab hosted the first free festival as a fundraiser at the Croydon Road Recreation Ground on August 16.

Haddon Hall, 42 Southend Road, Beckenham – Bowie lived on the ground floor of the now-demolished building, between October 1969 and May 1972 when he moved to Maida Vale. He painted the ceilings silver.
Bromley Registry Office, Beckenham Lane – Bowie married Angie on March 19, 1970. They divorced in 1980.
Underhill Studios, Blackheath Hill, Greenwich – Bowie began work on the album that would become The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in 1971 at Underhill Studios, Greenwich, now Gee-Pharm. 
Avery Hill College, Eltham – Bowie’s legendary Ziggy Stardust tour played Avery Hill College on February 25, 1972
The Greyhound, Park Lane, Croydon – The Ziggy Stardust tour came to Croydon’s Greyhound on June 25, 1972

Passport to the Brave New World: the Vaccine

I have already written about the currency reset and other features of a technocratic future waiting in the wings. —New levels of visible surveillance, social credit scores, universal guaranteed income, Internet of Things, energy-use quotas, smart cities.
—Events can move in several directions, going forward. In this article, I explore one of those directions.
The occasion is this fake pandemic; the big hammer is the vaccine against the phony COVID.
As Fauci mentioned a couple of months ago, it could be a DNA vaccine—new technology—which means it is really gene therapy. Synthesized genes are injected into the body. They purportedly set up immunity. Actually, they PERMANENTLY alter the genetic makeup of the recipient. Jabbed: How the Vaccin... As you can imagine, this creates the opportunity to put many different genes into humans. To try to invent “new humans.”
The so-called immunity certificates Fauci is now talking about? They would be issued to people who test positive on the new antibody tests for COVID-19—which is an interesting turnaround, because, since 1984, positive tests results have generally been taken to mean “infected.” Why the shift?
Because there is a need for these immunity certificates—as an INTRO to condition the population to an IDEA.
If and when the COVID vaccine arrives, the certificates would be used to signify immunity for all those who take the shot.
It would function as a license. Your passport into the Brave New World. You’re “immune,” so you’re allowed to move out of fear mode. And circulate and travel and enter schools…
For DNA vaccines, the reference is the New York Times, 3/15/15, “Protection Without a Vaccine.” It describes the frontier of research. Here are key quotes that illustrate the use of synthetic genes to “protect against disease,” while changing the genetic makeup of humans. This is not science fiction:
“By delivering synthetic genes into the muscles of the [experimental] monkeys, the scientists are essentially re-engineering the animals to resist disease.”
“’The sky’s the limit,’ said Michael Farzan, an immunologist at Scripps and lead author of the new study.”
“The first human trial based on this strategy — called immunoprophylaxis by gene transfer, or I.G.T. — is underway, and several new ones are planned.” [That was five years ago.]
“I.G.T. is altogether different from traditional vaccination. It is instead a form of gene therapy. Scientists isolate the genes that produce powerful antibodies against certain diseases and then synthesize artificial versions. The genes are placed into viruses and injected into human tissue, usually muscle.”
Here is the punchline: “The viruses invade human cells with their DNA payloads, and the synthetic gene is incorporated into the recipient’s own DNA. If all goes well, the new genes instruct the cells to begin manufacturing powerful antibodies.”
Read that again: “the synthetic gene is incorporated into the recipient’s own DNA.”
Alteration of the human genetic makeup.
Not just a “visit.” Permanent residence.
The Times article taps Dr. David Baltimore for an opinion:
“Still, Dr. Baltimore says that he envisions that some people might be leery of a vaccination strategy that means altering their own DNA, even if it prevents a potentially fatal disease.”
Yes, some people might be leery. If they have two or three working brain cells.
This is genetic roulette with a loaded gun.
And the further implications are clear. Vaccines can be used as a cover for the injections of any and all genes, whose actual purpose is unannounced.
The vaccine masters have a problem. They know their genetic technology is far from perfect. Plans to re-engineer the human race are not a simple one two three.
For example, consider the latest and greatest genetic tool, called CRISPR.

Technologynetworks.com (6/26/17): “CRISPR gene editing is taking biomedical research by storm. Providing the ultimate toolbox for genetic manipulation, many new applications for this technology are now being investigated and established. CRISPR systems are already delivering superior genetic models for fundamental disease research, drug screening and therapy development, rapid diagnostics, in vivo editing and correction of heritable conditions and now the first human CRISPR clinical trials.”
All hail. 
It’s called CRISPR, a much faster, more precise, and cheaper technique for editing genes. Researchers are in love with it. You can find hundreds of articles and studies fawning over the innovation.
At phys.org, however, we have this, ahem, warning note (5/29/17): “…a new study published in Nature Methods has found that the gene-editing technology can introduce hundreds of unintended mutations into the genome.”
Oops.
“In the new study, the researchers sequenced the entire genome of mice that had undergone CRISPR gene editing in the team’s previous study and looked for all mutations, including those that only altered a single nucleotide.”
“The researchers determined that CRISPR had successfully corrected a gene that causes blindness, but Kellie Schaefer, a PhD student in the lab of Vinit Mahajan, MD, PhD, associate professor of ophthalmology at Stanford University, and co-author of the study, found that the genomes of two independent gene therapy recipients [mice] HAD SUSTAINED MORE THAN 1500 SINGLE-NUCLEOTIDE MUTATIONS AND MORE THAN 100 LARGER [GENE] DELETIONS AND INSERTIONS. None of these DNA mutations were predicted by computer algorithms that are widely used by researchers to look for off-target effects.” (Emphasis is mine.)
“’Researchers who aren’t using whole genome sequencing to find off-target effects may be missing potentially important mutations,’ Dr. Tsang says. ‘Even a single nucleotide change can have a huge impact’.”
Genetic roulette is alive and well.
Spin the wheel, see what numbers come up. Good effects, bad effects, who knows? Step right up and take your chances.
Of course, researchers who admit these tremendous problems remain optimistic. They look forward to “refining the method.” That’s a cover for: “we really don’t know what we’re doing right now.”
Unfortunately, much science operates in this fashion. Launch a new technology, and turn a blind eye to the consequences. For example, place mercury, a devastating neurotoxin, in vaccines. What harm could result—aside from the destruction of children’s brains.
Here is more gushing PR, otherwise known as throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks: “There are weekly press releases and updates on new advances [in CRISPR] and discoveries made possible with this technology; the first evidence is now emerging that CRISPR-Cas9 could provide cures for major diseases including cancers and devastating human viruses such as HIV-1.” (technologynetworks.com)

And just in case you think only the most careful and competent leading lights of the genetic research community would be permitted to get within a mile of CRISPR, here is more from technologynetworks.com:
“CRISPR-Cas9 systems, tools and basic methodology are very accessible as ready to go toolkits that anyone with lab space and an idea can pick up and start working with…In response to a growing need, companies such as Desktop Genetics have developed open access software to accelerate CRISPR experimentation and analysis.”
That’s good to know. “Anyone with lab space and an idea” can jump on board and have at it.
Do your own cross breeding of the pregnant phrases, “What could possibly go wrong,” and “Nothing to see here, move along,” and you’ve summarized the situation.
“They say they cured my anemia, but now I turn green and purple and I keep falling down.”
If all this isn’t enough to make you see the dangers of CRISPR, consider this statement about engineering human immune cells (T-cells) in a “safer” way. From statnews.com (June 23, 2013):
“The experiment would alter the immune system’s T cells only after they’re removed from a patient. That gives scientists the chance to screen the CRISPR’d cells to make sure only the three intended genes, all involved in making T cells find and destroy tumor cells, are altered. But after those T cells are infused back into a patient to fight melanoma, sarcoma, or myeloma, the CRISPR system can keep editing DNA, and tracking such edits becomes like following a polar bear in a snowstorm.”
Not very comforting. Once set in motion, even under the most protected and limited conditions, CRISPR can keep on working, scrambling genes in unknown ways.
So…when it comes to DNA vaccines, aka gene therapy, a plan to precisely re-engineer humans could quite easily descend into uncontrolled chaos.
And the controllers and elite funders of the vaccine know that.
What to do?
With the global population as their guinea pigs, perhaps they would start small. Introduce the slightest possible gene-alteration, stand back and see what happens. Try out a gene that would ordinarily—hopefully—achieve next to nothing. Try to measure the results.
Viewed from one angle, the whole fake epidemic is a set-up for the vaccine, and for mandatory vaccines.
I have written about the special exemption from liability recently issued by the US Dept. of Health and Human Services. Basically, anyone associated with pharmaceutical strategies undertaken “against the coronavirus” cannot be sued, regardless of “adverse effects” of medicines or vaccines.
Taking a stand against mandatory vaccines—any and all vaccines—is more important than ever.

Elise Cooper Interview with Alfred Gough and Miles Millar
Double Exposure by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of the TV series, “Smallville,” brings to life a unique storyline. Set in the 1960s to make the story believable, they explore the question, what if Hitler did not die in the bunker, and is still alive?
The plot begins with a KGB Russian agent, turned CIA asset, smuggling a film canister over the Berlin Wall.  Because the East Germans shot the agent as well as the canister the CIA now needs help in attempting to repair it.  They turn to David Toland, a decorated Korean War veteran, who wanted to leave his combat days behind him. Now the Director of Preservation for the Library of Congress's National Film Archive, he is asked to restore the film by CIA Agent Lana Welles.  The film shows Hitler is still alive, well, and dangerous. Because there are those that want to restore the Third Reich, Welles and Toland put their lives in danger as they attempt to pursue Hitler all over the world. Traveling to Russia for clues, they are saved by Simon Lean who is masquerading as a best-selling author. They join forces in their pursuit to find Hitler and to end his attempt at regaining power.
The novel is action-packed as the characters journey around the globe from Washington DC to Europe to South America. Betrayals, lies, deceptions, and deceits are at the heart of the story. David realizes that not everyone is who or what they are, learning that trust is a rare commodity with all the many traitors and moles.
Elise Cooper:  Since you both are screenwriters why didn’t you try to make a movie?
Alfred Gough and Miles Millar: We initially imagined Double Exposure as a movie, but as soon as we started breaking the outline, it became clear that the scope of the story was too big and would be more suited to a novel with the period setting, the globetrotting locations, and the elaborate action set-pieces. Although Double Exposure is our first novel, we came to it after spending the entirety of our professional lives as screenwriters. We approached the story exactly the same way we would if we had been writing a movie or TV pilot. Like any great movie thriller, we wanted the narrative to have a propulsive drive. We loved the idea of starting with a real historical event and then using it as a jumping off point to spin our own wild, globe-trotting yarn.
EC: You are the creators of “Smallville,” the TV series about the life of Clark Kent before Superman?
AGMM:  We were not huge comic book fans, but were fans of the superhero film, “Superman,” starring Christopher Reeve and directed by Richard Donner. We got the perspective from it, and with the TV series tried to stay true to the spirit, even as today’s Superheroes have become corporatized. When we started there was no Marvel universe.  What we tried to do is dramatize the emotions of Clark Kent regarding how and why he became a hero.  It was right after 9/11 where the mood of the country shifted and embraced Superman.  It was the right show at the right time.  He was the defender of America, which has been redefined and reinterpreted for every generation of Americans.
EC:  Why the 1960s?
AGMM:  Film restoration at the time was fairly new.  When the Internet and technology is taken away the world is opened up more.  There is not the crutch of the computer, cell phones, Google Maps, and DNA.  The hero is challenged more.
EC:  Are you both movie fans considering you included the classics “King Kong,” “The Great Dictator,” and the “Nun’s Story?”
AGMM:  We are both die-hard movie buffs and have dedicated our professional lives to the art form. We first met at USC Film School and hit it off because we shared the same taste in movies. We wanted to write a book with movie references.  It was a fun element of this story because we infused David’s job into the story.  We hope readers caught all the references.
EC: How would you describe David?
AGMM: David Toland’s skill as a film restoration seemed unique, and was one that hadn’t been explored before in either a novel or a movie. We imagined him as the Indiana Jones of film restoration. He is conflicted about his life as a soldier so he escaped to this job so he does not have to deal with the real world.  Now he is put in a situation that has world altering consequences.  
EC:  So what film personality describes David?
AGMM: He is a combination of Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Jimmy Stewart, and William Holden. He has the quality of being the “every man” until he is pushed and then has an edge to him.
EC:  How would you describe Lana?
AGMM:  She plays things close to the vest and is very serious.  She has to conform to being a woman in a man’s world.  We wanted her to be the one to drive the plot.  She is a strong female character who is mysterious and keeps David guessing.
EC:  So what film personality describes Lana?
AGMM:  She is a combination of Lauren Bacall, Veronica Lake, and Rita Hayworth. Lana has plenty of attitude and is strong, feminine, and smart.  
EC:  How would you describe Simon?
AGMM:  Self-serving, in it for himself.  The best party guest.  A mercenary without much moral compass.
EC:  So what film personality describes Simon?
AGMM:  A combination of David Niven, Alec Guinness, and Peter O’ Toole. He is English and a scene stealing character.
EC:  Why all the different settings?
AGMM:  It is a globe-trotting adventure story. We wanted to use the Hitchcockian glamor and tone.  Hopefully, readers take the journey with the characters who went from Washington DC to Russia to Europe to South America. Remember many Nazis went to Spain and South America on submarines.
EC:  Can you explain the quote, “Films lie to tell the truth?”
AGMM:  Everything about a movie is manipulation.  The story has a cast of characters, and particular scenes.  Putting it all together is for the emotional response.  
EC:  Is there going to be another book?  
AGMM: We would love to continue David’s story in a series of novels. The jumping off point will have David restoring a piece of film that launches him on another unexpected adventure. We have already written the outlines to two follow-ups, but we obviously need to wait and see the reaction to Double Exposure.
