@vinduri asked ❝ by nightfall, you will be at the doorway of your destiny. ❞  from finrod
Tumblr media
the green knight starters || accepting for all muses
The last day in Rivendell could not have come fast enough for Boromir son of Denethor II. A place of rest, many had called it, a homely house, welcoming and still, so that one might not even notice the passing of time at all. To Boromir, these descriptions seemed mad. Still the place might be, but his mind and body were not, each counting every day of the two months he had been prevailed upon to wait here, it's denizens seeming lack of care for the time passing making his own growing tension even more stark.
Hence, when addressed by this towering elf-lord, he is forced to strain a respectful expression out from his scowling face and attempt to school his manners and reactions, no matter how uncanny or unknowable this creature might appear to him. "Is that not so at every nightfall, and every sunrise as well? Destiny comes at a man so fast, it renders examination irrelevant as far as I have seen," he leans back upon the bench he has occupied in an effort to calm himself with a view of the roaring waterfall that cascades into the valley, "though, if my destiny is to walk out of your gates only to trip, fall and be carried away on the river, I would know of it and perhaps think better of opening that doorway for now."
The sardonic tone he adopts comes naturally, but the humour in it is somewhat lost on him as he once again recalls the... incident... at Tharbad and the losses of both horse and pride he suffered because of it.

For Want of a Ring by @tathrin (G, Gimli & Legolas, 4k):
The aftermath of the Battle of the Hornburg is a time for the survivors to rest and heal, a brief pause in the long march to war. The same is true of the lone Dwarf and Elf who fought there—but the members of the Fellowship of the Ring faced peril long before this bitter night, and some scars sit deeper than any mere bandage might soothe.
The Ring has gone beyond their reach now, with but one casualty from their Company to its name so far; but that does not mean its dark whispers do not linger still within the hearts that heard it.
But what could tempt an Elf of Mirkwood to look upon that terrible Shadow with aught but loathing?

Sam meets Frodo for the first time.
A Corner of the Hall by Zdenka (G, Aragorn & Bilbo, ~550 words):
Aragorn gives Bilbo the promised help with his song.
a red book pressed into his hands by dirgewithoutmusic (G, Bilbo & Frodo, Sam & Frodo, 2.4k):
Even on the sweet walks of the Shire, things come along that sweep you off your feet—adventures, wizards, children. Bilbo came down, a month after he’d adopted this strange, quiet boy on a whim and a wonder, and found his whole (second) living room scattered with some unholy combination of paint, jam, and mud. Frodo sat in the middle of the mess, with dirty hands and innocence plastered all over his face.
Bilbo leaned on the door because something in that bright grin had taken his balance from him. He went for a mop. He had not felt so at home since thirteen dwarves had tumbled through his round green door. He felt like Frodo had stolen something from him and then given it back better than it had left.
Thievery, perhaps, ran in the family.

Men think much about the stories of old days in Gondor; and Denethor has given long thought to the rhyme and to the words Isildur's Bane, since Boromir went away.
‘He is not as other men of this time, Pippin, and whatever be his descent from father to son, by some chance the blood of Westernesse runs nearly true in him; as it does in his other son, Faramir, and yet did not in Boromir whom he loved best. He has long sight. He can perceive, if he bends his will thither, much of what is passing in the minds of men, even of those that dwell far off. It is difficult to deceive him, and dangerous to try.'
Gandalf speaking of Denethor and his sons, Return of the King, Minas Tirith.

OC in Fifteen Lines (or Less)
Thank you so much for the tag, @darknightfrombeyond!
Rules: Share 15 or fewer lines of dialogue from an OC, ideally lines that capture the character/personality/vibe of the OC. Bonus points for just using the dialogue without other details about the scene, but you're free to include those as well!
I am going with my LotR protagonist, Idrin, because even if her fic is under revision, I do have the most on her.
"He asked, indeed, but I could not go. I feel safer in the City, and I have duties here."
Idrin's lip twitched. "Some might name it expedient instead."
"It must be a desperate errand that would take them so far beyond the Anduin," she mused. "Our doom then lies with them, and with Isildur's Bane — whatever that may be — or so I read the riddle."
"'Twas madness to send them there. Surely it would be more prudent to conserve our force and man the City’s walls instead?"
"It has been many years since such accounts succeeded in frightening me," she added: "growing up in a household of men makes one familiar with the gruesome bits of battle."
"You may wait outside while I stitch the wound, if you wish, but the healers treating those severely wounded would welcome aid. Glaewen will show you."
"The soldiers may not mind the lack of bathtubs," she said, "but I have no desire to scour the riverbank for a private spot in order to bathe."
"Warfare may be a man's business, but daggers can be handled by women, also."
"I have spent more than fifteen years helping my aunt run the household, giving instructions to cooks and man-servants and maids, seeing to preparations for feasts and arranging housing for guests; this is my responsibility."
Idrin's eyes flashed and her nostril flared. "Be careful, Merilwen. Some of these scrolls are hundreds of years old."
Tagging: @themaradwrites @asirensrage @thecharmedburrowspn-files @bisexualterror @bi-ologistofthehills @anqelwiithhxrns @mabonetsamhain @foxesandmagic @bluebell-winter, and since I'm too tired to think properly, anyone who wants to do this!

I'd forgotten how much tension Tolkien gets out of setting Faramir up as Boromir II. Faramir and his men are the first non-Gollum people Frodo has encountered since fleeing from Boromir. Faramir seems kind and good and reasonable, but so did Boromir, and Faramir looks so much like his brother. He claims he wouldn't take up Isildur's Bane if he found it by the road, but he doesn't know what Isildur's Bane is. He hasn't faced the temptation that Boromir has. Who's to say he wouldn't change his mind when he found out what Frodo was carrying?
Frodo's quest so far has been one long series of running into people who can help them; there's generally a very clear line between who they can trust and who they can't. (Gollum is a borderline case where they have to accept his help, but know they can't fully trust him.) This is the first time Frodo run into someone who could be good, but might turn to evil. Boromir's betrayal changed everything. It gave Frodo new experience with the treachery of men. In a sense, it was a loss of innocence, a coming-of-age moment. He doesn't have Gandalf to help him judge character anymore; he's on his own (with Sam, who doesn't know any more than he does). He's got good reason to be cautious.
This meeting specifically plays into all his fears--what are the chances that the first man he meets after fleeing Boromir is his brother? There's no clear line between good and evil; the potential for both exists in the hearts of all men. He can't trust or doubt too much, and trying to navigate that line introduces a more nuanced kind of danger to their quest, and it's a fascinating turn for the story to take.
