Abseits vom Mainstream

Wie schnell die Zeit vergeht, Leute. Es ist Sommer. Also in Hamburg etwa fünf Tage lang, vermutlich. Aber immerhin. Zeit für ein bisschen ausgewählte neue Musik, die uns durch die kommenden Wochen zieht, während wir am gut gekühlten Getränk hängen und uns treiben lassen. Oder es vielleicht auch bunt treiben. 

Es ist derzeit ja nicht viel Gutes zu hören aus Österreich. Thorsteinn Einarsson sollte das ändern können, denn sein neues Album INGI ist verdammt gut. 22 Jahre ist er alt, schon 2015 wurde er mit dem Amadeus Austrian Music Award in der Kategorie „Songwriter des Jahres“ ausgezeichnet. Es folgte das Debütalbum und eine damit verbundene Tour sowie die üblichen TV- und Radio-Auftritte. Und es folgte Erfolg. Ein ziemlich beachtlicher sogar – wenn auch vorerst vorwiegend in Österreich. Dass sich das in absehbarer Zeit ändern dürfte, beweist nun sein zweites Album INGI. Einarssons Herkunft dürfte sich dabei auch als außerordentlicher Turbo herausstellen. Geboren wurde er nämlich in Reykjavik, wo er auch die ersten Lebensjahre verbrachte, bevor er mit seinen Eltern nach Salzburg zog. Irgendwann trennten sich seine Eltern und gemeinsam mit seiner Mutter verschlug es ihn wieder in seine Heimat, der er jedoch irgendwann entfloh, als es ihn zu seinem Vater zog, der in einer Rockband spielte und als Bassbariton tätig war. Es müssen die Gene sein, anders ist Einarssons massive Stimme nicht zu erklären. Vom berührenden Bass bis in einen eleganten Falsett beherrscht dieser junge Kerl sein wichtigstes Instrument ziemlich eindrucksvoll. Nun tänzelt er zwischen Rockmusik, den Wurzeln seines Vaters, und moderner Popmusik, die allerdings – man möchte fast sagen „typisch“ – isländisch klingt, ohne benennen zu können, was das nun genau sein soll. Man muss es hören. Gefällig ist das auf keinem Fall, radiotauglich aber doch. Und das vermutlich deshalb, weil es einfach gut ist. Einarsson macht Musik, die man mögen lernt, weil sie sich abhebt vom sonstigen Popeinheitsbrei. Sie spielt mit Erwartungen und bricht Muster auf. Diese Stimme ist besonders, weil es zwar einige Vertreter seiner Generation auch in Amerika und Großbritannien gibt, die über ein solches besonderes Organ verfügen, deren Popsongs aber allesamt austauschbar sind. Einarsson kreiert andere Klangwelten darum. Rock, Pop und manchmal auch ein bisschen die große fast schon opernhafte Geste, die aber nie aufgesetzt oder gekünstelt wirkt, sondern immer im Dienst der Stimmung steht, die es zu vermitteln gilt. Alles das auf dem berühmten zweiten Album geboten zu bekommen, das bekanntlich eines der schwierigsten ist, macht die Musik darauf umso wertvoller. Mögen ihm die Ideen und die Lust am Musikmachen niemals ausgehen.

Na gut, dann schreib ich jetzt doch etwas über Ivy Flindt. Ivy Flindt ist ein Hamburger Duo, das bereits im April sein Album veröffentlicht hat. Anfangs hab ich hin und wieder Live- oder Behind-the-Scenes-Videos gesehen und immer wieder war mir das zu gekünstelt. Da waren zwei Menschen zu sehen, die sich der Tatsache bewusst waren, dass da eine Kamera läuft und irgendwie so agierten, wie jemand agiert, der einen guten Musiker bzw. eine gute Musikerin spielt. Irgendwie kam ich darauf nie so ganz klar. Deshalb schob ich das Album In Every Move erstmal weit von mir weg. Doch die gute Presse, die ich hier und da aufschnappte, schürte auch meine Neugierde. Und jetzt, einige Wochen später, und ohne seitdem wieder irgendein Video von den beiden gesehen zu haben, hörte ich also das Album und kann seitdem nachvollziehen, warum es so gelobt wird. Eine besondere Anekdote gibt es, die mir dann letztlich dabei geholfen hat, zu verstehen, warum dieses Album so geworden ist, wie es nun klingt. Ich liebe das Album Long Gone Before Daylight von den Cardigans. Cate Martin, die Stimme von Ivy Flindt offenbar auch. So sehr nämlich, dass sie alles daran setzte, Per Sunding, seinerseits Produzent des großartigen Long Gone Before Daylight, davon zu überzeugen, auch ihr Album zu produzieren. Und so verwundert es auch nicht, dass jedes gesungene Wort, jeder Ton, jede Stimmung nahezu perfekt aufeinander abgestimmt ist. Alles passt tadellos zueinander. Es ist, als würde man das schönste Etwas seit langem sehen oder – wie in unserem Fall – hören. Atmosphärisch dicht, urban und echt ist das alles. Und vermutlich könnte ich noch ein paar Buzzwords in die Runde werfen, was ich vermutlich müsste, weil sie alle zutreffen. Ivy Flindt verstehen ihr Handwerk, allen voran Micha Holland, der zweite Teil des Duos, der kreative Kopf hinter den Instrumenten, wenn man so will. Und Martin, die Stimme des Duos, liegt die Kunst am Herzen. Die Kunst in ihrer Gesamtheit, die über den bloßen Song hinausgeht, also die Inszenierung mit einschließt und idealerweise auch in besonders eindrucksvollen Videos mündet. Man spürt diese Hingabe, wenn man sich durch ein paar Arbeiten klickt und hängen bleibt. Aber dieser Perfektionismus ist es, der dafür sorgt, dass ich nicht vollumfänglich warm mit den beiden werden kann. Was Nina Persson auf Long Gone Before Daylight gelungen ist, davon ist Martin noch zu weit entfernt. Nämlich den Mantel der Kunst abzustreifen und das Leben zuzulassen. Ein Leben, das eben nicht perfekt ist. Ein unperfektes Leben, das eben auch eingefangen gehört. Ein bisschen wirkt In Every Move auf mich so, wie das eine Foto von 27 Versuchen, das man auf Instagram online gestellt hat. Das Foto, auf dem der Lichtstrahl so perfekt sitzt wie die Haarsträhne und der aufsteigende Dampf aus der Kaffeetasse nicht besser still stehen kann für diesen einen Moment, in dem es einem gelungen ist, den Auslöser zu betätigen. Wäre ich böse, würde ich urteilen, dass mir das alles so perfekt ist, dass es fast schon antiseptisch ist. So antiseptisch, dass es fast scheint, als würde Martin mit Desinfektionsmittel gurgeln. Ich bin aber nicht böse. Ich wünsche mir nur ein bisschen weniger Kunst und dafür mehr Leben. Davon gibt es zwar genug, aber – und da sind wir uns doch alle einig – davon kann es eigentlich nicht genug geben. In einer Welt, in der nur das Perfekte zu gewinnen scheint, tut es gut, wenn das Leben auch eine gewisse Beiläufigkeit bekommt oder Schmutz oder Risse. So, wie es etwa Long Gone Before Daylight vermittelt. Das Intro Magazin etwa lobte die klaren, starken Worte, mit denen die komplexen Gefühle eingefangen werden. Ich denke eigentlich nur: Warum genau ist das erstrebenswert? Ist es nicht gerade spannend, Komplexes komplex sein zu lassen? Wie fängt man Etwas ein, das nicht einzufangen ist? Ivy Flindt ist das offenbar gelungen, wenn man dem durchaus überschwänglichen Presse-Echo glauben darf. Ich finde: Man darf daran auch scheitern. Es macht die Ergebnisse vermutlich sogar ehrlicher. Und da schließt sich der Kreis, denn mehr Ehrlichkeit bedeutet weniger Streben nach einer Art von Kunst, die vor allem eines bleibt: kühl.

Während meines Studiums haben sich Richard Hawley und Morrissey in mir ein Kopf-an-Kopf-Rennen in Sachen Beliebtheit geliefert, aus dem der Mozzer immer als Gewinner hervorgegangen ist. Das hat sich in den letzten Jahren geändert. Nicht nur, weil es sich Morrissey mit seinen wirren Äußerungen in der rechten Ecke bequem gemacht hat, sondern und vor allem, weil Hawley einfach die bessere Musik abliefert. Bestes Beispiel: Während Morrissey gerade ein neues Album veröffentlicht hat (das ich – ganz nebenbei – doch für sehr gelungen halte), das jedoch ausschließlich aus Coversongs besteht, hat Hawley die Nummer sicher gemieden. Stattdessen gibt er in elf neuen Songs einen derart entspannten Crooner, dass man nicht umhin kommt, ihm zuzugestehen, dass er Morrissey sehr sehr weit hinter sich gelassen hat. Hawley entwickelt sich auf Further sogar weiter: Ob der laute Opener Off my mind, das ungestüme Is there a Pill? Oder das markante Galley Girl – auf seine älteren Tage entdeckt Hawley den Lautstärkeregler, den er dann auch gleich mal ordentlich aufdreht. Dass es trotzdem noch anschmiegsamere Stücke gibt, ist natürlich mehr als Fanservice. Es schlagen vermutlich zwei Herzen in seiner Brust und dass diese ihn jung halten, spürt man knapp 35 Minuten lang. My Little Treasures ist das Herz des überaus erfolgreichen Musicals Standing At The Sky's Edge, das wiederum nach Hawleys sechstem Studioalbum benannt ist. Das Musical, das die Entwickelung des ambitionierten Musikers eindrucksvoll einfängt, wurde von der britischen Presse umjubelt und war Abend für Abend ausverkauft. Außerdem war es am Austragungsort, dem Sheffield Crucible Theater, das bisher erfolgreichste Musical seit seiner Eröffnung 1948. Wie dem auch sei: Hawley ist ein umtriebiger Kerl, der das Sinnieren über die Welt und das Musikmachen liebt. Er probiert sich gern aus, entwickelt sich stetig weiter, erzählt auf Further unter anderem vom Tod seines Vaters, der Begegnung mit einigen Lebensgefährten des Verstorbenen und den Geschichten, die der Sohn so zum ersten Mal über seinen Vater zu hören bekam. Hawley singt von Gefühlen, die ihn übermannt haben, von der Loyalität, die es zwischen ausgewählten Menschen geben kann und der Zeit, die uns alle verändert. Mein Lieblingsstück ist nicht ohne Grund Time Is, das man getrost einen Grower nennen kann. Es entwickelt sich von Strophe zu Strophe, wird kraftvoller und bietet jedem Zweifler die Stirn. Mir graut der Tag, an dem die Meldung die Runde macht, das Hawley nicht mehr unter uns weilt. Möge er noch lange leben und so gute Musik veröffentlichen.

If ever there was a contextual relationship between “smart” and “pop”, Sweden’s Ivy Flindt has it, and it is exceptional! Vocally light and lilting, the phrasing used by lead vocal Cate Martin is by no means cookie-cutter pop. Here on Young And Pretty from the duo’s long-player, In Every Move (August 2018), you get a taste of all that. 

A collaboration of two creators, Ivy Flindt combines the aforementioned Cate Martin and Micha Holland, painting pictures with the music they create, which as it turns out is in keeping with their larger goals and ambitions; composing, photographing and painting an inspiring attitude that reflects life. So Ivy Flindt isn’t so much a musical duo, but a creating force of two committed individuals. 

Nevertheless, musically, Ivy Flindt demands attention. There are tons of textural and aural experiences painted within the eleven tracks contained in In Every Move. Recently (April 2019) a single bundle was released for When You’re Not Around taken from the long-player. These eleven tracks are wrapped in an instrumentally minimalist approach, which tends to highlight the lyric and the delivery. For the most part, In Every Move is not for casual listening, it is meant to be experienced from the first words to the last refrain.

The Name Garden: Q&A Monday

Hey everyone! Sorry for missing last week’s Q&A - I’m still quite sick. I’ve just found out that I have an autoimmune disorder called rheumatoid arthritis, and will be beginning a low-dose chemo treatment as of next week. So things might be a little behind for a while still, but I promise to try keep on top of everything!

In the world of names, I’ve been hearing quite a lot of new ones! My mother is a kindergarten teacher, and the year has just started up, so she’s shared some lists of first names with me. It is very clear that the trend in 2013 was unisex names for girls; lots of Emersyn’s and even one I’ve never heard - Macaitie. What are some new names that you’ve been hearing?

Q: Hey there! I love the name Scottie (or Scotty) for a girl. I like the idea of it being a nickname for something a little bit more formal though. So far I've heard of Scotia and Scotlyn as options. I prefer the latter but I'm not too crazy about either. Any alternative suggestions?

A: Hello there! There are a few options. Firstly, a name similar to the two above is Scotland. Secondly, you could go with Prescott, which is quite unisex, but definitely has the ability to be shortened to Scottie. Thirdly, there is Scarlett, which doesn’t make Scottie jump to mind, but it really has all the elements in it to make that nickname, and I think it would work. Lastly, there’s the similar name Scout that you could consider, or even just going full out and using Scottie as the full-name!

Q: What do you think of the name Joshua for a girl?? It has something I really like but I'm not sure.. also what type of person would you associate the name Joshua in a girl?

A: To be honest, I don’t like it at all. My taste in names tends to lean very feminine for girls, and there’s rarely a unisex name that I prefer on a girl than a boy. So it’s just not my style. But if it holds something important, or something that you really like, then it’s fine to use it! 

As for the type of person I associate with it, that’s hard. I tend to see names growing to fit the person, not the person growing to fit the name, if that makes sense! Plus I’ve never considered a female Joshua! I suppose I’d see either a sporty kind of girl, or a girl that’s arty and a bit different from everyone else.

Q: Could you do a research post for the name Charlise and Felinda? It's my grandparents' names and I've never heard of them before.

A: Sure thing! I’ve never actually heard of Felinda either! Can I just clarify with you on what gender these names are used on, and what nationality? 

Charlise is a form of the Afrikaans name Charlize, which is their feminine form of Charles. I’ve never heard of it for a boy, and can’t see any details on it for a male, however, if it was used for a male, I’m more than happy to spend some time digging deeper.

As for Felinda, knowing the nationality will help me narrow down the search. At this point, I can only imagine that it’s a Portuguese variant of Felina or Belinda, or maybe even a mash-up, but I’d like to research a bit further! I can also see that it’s very rarely used as a surname, and some indications that it may be related to Flindt. So there’s more to go!

Charlise (female) will be posted on March 1st. Sorry that I can’t give you any more information at this point!

Ivy Flindt is an exceptional indie pop duo comprised of members Cate Martin (vocals, organ) and Micha Holland (guitar). Their album, In Every Move, is produced by Per Sunding, best known for his work with The Cardigans. Their music resembles Nordic vastness, with confessions of devotion and retreat, while breathing melancholy with every note, and is recommended to the fans of Feist, Beth Gibbons of Portishead, Imogen Heap, Sia, The Cranberries and Dido.
