"Recently, I went to see the [Arctic] Monkeys when they played in Sheffield and they all texted me individually to ask if I was coming to see the gig. All of them. There was no management or anything. I thought, ‘Well, I’ll go along and maybe there’ll be a guest area’. They got me a fucking car, man. They drove me straight into the dressing room area next to the tour buses and within five minutes we were having a beer and a joke. They haven’t changed. All that massive success they’ve had, their level of success is up there with Joe’s [Cocker], it’s huge and I can reliably inform you that they’re not arseholes. They’ve not changed and it’s beautiful to see. And it means I’m right as well! It’s not some kind of myth about this Sheffield idyll that Hawley has invented, it’s true. That level of success they’ve had, not only can it mess with your head, but it can destroy you as a human being. There are examples of that in similar bands where people are gargantuan arseholes. Again, I’m not naming any names, but you see it all of the time. Like I said, if you’re going to turn into a fucking balloon, make sure you’ve got someone to hold that string."

Richard Hawley - Prism Jeans
I was listening to Prism Jeans yesterday, have always been a big fan of English singer songwriter Richard Hawley. This was only released on the 2nd of May. Prism Jeans, Heavy Rain and Two For His Heels, the latter two shared below, are all tasters taken from Richard's forthcoming brand new album In This City They Call You Love, which wil be released on the 31st May.

One of my favourite singers is having a big concert with special guests in Sheffield in August. One of those guests is another one of my favourite singers, like top 3 favourites. I've never seen either live and I'm not sure if I'll ever get a chance like that again.

Quote
“I love what they do, because they do what bands should do which is stretch out and explore,” he said. “You can’t make the same record over and over again. I really like what they do and they’re mates.” Having previously worked together on Arctic Monkeys’ 2012 b-side ‘You And I’, Hawley had doubts over whether they’d be likely to collaborate again. “It might not happen,” he said. “I’m happy with what we did. Lightning might not strike twice and it might be pointless to go back, but if it happens again I’m sure it would be interesting.”

So Alex mentioned this Richard Hawley song in an interview and I think the question must have been something to do with songs that you relate to or like songs that were written for you. Something along those lines. Anyway it’s a great song!
youtube
It’s also very very melancholic… like because of the fact it’s a sad slow song, but also lyrically. I can just imagine Alex playing it and relating to the feeling.
The song explores life on the road as a musician through this jaded lens, there is a ‘cost’ to this lifestyle and you experience certain kinds of ‘loss’ too. The idea of being ‘born under a bad sign’ suggests fate has doomed or cursed the musician to this life that is so different to the way everyone else lives, it’s like life in a liminal space. On tour you are temporally out of place because you work at night. And critically this position, in which you are constantly moving, makes it hard to form proper romantic relationships. The last part where he repeats ‘everybody knows’, conveys slight paranoia, this public life is always on display and the people who witness it can easily pull you apart with their judgment or pity or disapproval.
Mind you this is just a theory I don’t know what I’m talking about 👀
