I just took a 6pound package (for WORK) that I wanted to hand off on the way home to FIVE different post offices that were all:
1) closed without notice despite opening hours saying otherwise
2) packed at evening rush hour so if I waited I'd have missed my train home
3) opening exactly half an hour after i arrived at each of their locations in a cascading failure
Making me lug this fucking thing three miles through two cities over two days only to end up back at the office with it this morning.
I'M about ready to FUCKING STAB SOMEONE.
Any takers?

Being a Billiken at the JFRC
One of the biggest reasons I decided to go to the university that I attend was study abroad prospects. Not only does SLU have a huge selection of study abroad programs, but the costs of approved study abroad programs is covered by financial aid. After a meticulous search for a perfect program, I found the John Felice Rome Center, through Loyola University of Chicago. Even though it isn’t through SLU, the JFRC is an amazing option that’s really popular with Billikens!
Study Trips: Who doesn’t like to travel? In my year at the JFRC, I was able to go on a fall break trip and a spring break trip. My fall break trip was a ten day tour of the amazing country of Greece, complete with history, dancing, and a trip to the beautiful island of Mykonos. I also took a spring break trip to the Balkans, where we learned the history of the region from people who lived it, as well as partied in the Serbian capital of Belgrade. The trips are led by amazing and knowledgeable people, and (at least) one of the SLAs comes along too. There are other study trips that go for a day or two, or for weekends. No matter what, you’re bound to have the time of your life!

Classes: Okay, when you study abroad, sometimes classes aren’t your priority. The classes at JFRC, though, are too cool not to like! The class size is small, so it’s really engaging, and the professors are top notch. Plus, a lot of classes are either on-site or partially on-site, which means that you have classes in places like Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Colosseum. You definitely don’t want to miss classes at JFRC. (Plus, there’s no class on Friday!)
Faith: Faith is a huge reason why people choose SLU, and the Jesuit tradition is alive at the JFRC. Students there are welcome to both daily and weekly masses, held by Father Bohr and Father Al. Being in Rome, the heart of Roman Catholicism, also means that you have no shortage of churches to visit. It also means that St. Peter’s is a short bus ride away, and the JFRC has so many opportunities to get you there. Once a semester, classes are cancelled so students can go to a Papal Audience, and JFRC also helps secure tickets to masses with Pope Francis! There’s also a pilgrimage every semester to Assisi, a small town in Umbria where St. Francis of Assisi hails from. You won’t leave hungry, without prayer, or sober.

Internships: Looking for something to boost your resume? Check out the internship program, led by the fabulous Nadia Cristiana. In my second semester, I had an internship at the Pontificio Istituto di Archeologia Cristiana, where I had the best internship ever working in a higher education and archaeological organization. No matter what your interests are, you’ll be hooked up with an amazing internship.
Location, Location, Location!: The JFRC is located in the neighborhood of Baldiuna, which is about half an hour away from the city center. The campus is self-sufficient, but it’s also close to stores, restaurants, and public transport. Rome itself is in a great location, where you can fly pretty much anywhere in Europe, and take an inexpensive train to Venice, Florence, or Milan. My independent travels took me from Paris, Prague, and London to Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland!
Community: Of course, there is a huge sense of community at the Rome Center. Even though everyone has their own group, we are like a family. We live together, study together, eat together, play calcio together, and travel together. The JFRC is small, but it’s a family. Since there’s a lot of Billikens at the JFRC, there’s a strong sense of community in that respect. As this picture from Billiken Kendall Robinson shows, there’s a sort of comradery between JFRC’s Billikens!

Week 2: JFRC Trip to Umbria
Buonasera! Catching up with the blog slowly, but surely. Here’s an update from Week 2 of my Study Abroad adventures!
There are about 200 students studying at the JFRC this semester. We all took an orientation trip to Umbria the second week of our program in hopes of making new friendships and experiencing new lifestyles throughout Italy. Our first stop was in the Italian town of Narni. Sound a bit familiar? Well, if you’ve heard of the famous C.S. Lewis book, “The Chronicles of Narnia”, the setting is based off this town. Exploring the town and seeing some of the similarities from the book/movie was really interesting. Check it out:

Narnia
After scoping out the streets of Narni, we got to wander through the vineyard. Our group got a tour of a really nice vineyard *somewhere* in Umbria and learned about the process of how the wine was made from vine to bottle. By the end of the tour, we got to try a red wine, white wine, and rosé. I’m a huge red wine fan but my favorite was definitely their rosé.
Lesson #4: All Italian wine is delicious and it’s hard to choose favorites.

It wasn’t the most exciting weekend, but I definitely grew a lot closer to my squad and got to meet a couple other cool people in our program. I think it was because we all bonded over the fact that the weekend was a bit boring...but hey, atleast something good came out of the pressing monotony we all felt.
They say it usually takes two weeks to get adjusted to a habit or lifestyle and one that I adjusted to was the Italian diet.

If you don’t like any of the stuff listed above, don’t come to Italy.
Ciao!

I'm Sarah, and I'm studying abroad this semester at the JFRC in a neighborhood of Rome called Balduina. I know I'm going to be going out and trying new things, so I thought I'd start a blog for my own memories and maybe to help out some other people thinking about studying abroad. I've never blogged seriously before, so here goes nothing.
Pictured above is the courtyard of the JFRC campus. Surrounded by trees, the JFRC is a sight to behold and smells amazing (so long as you stay on campus). I haven't been in Balduina long, but I think I'm in love. The weather is amazing, especially since in Chicago it's probably freezing right about now, the people are friendly, and I feel like I can relax.
Classes aren't in session yet, but I have been so busy since I arrived in Rome. Between orientation and meeting new people and getting out to see the city, it's been a little crazy. I want to remember as much as I can, so I'm going to end this introductory post and start writing down what I did this week instead.
Ciao ragazzi!

Orientation Trip to Umbria!
Umbria is kind of a weird region to go to in Italy because it's not a tourist-y place, but it was still very cool.
We stopped in Montefalco to visit a Winery and do some wine tasting. Wine for breakfast? Vabene. Also my SLA (RA on steroids) is hilarious. On the bus he used the microphone to introduce the winery, also saying that it is owned by American TV personality Stephen Colbert and everybody freaked out. Until he said just kidding. He likes to do shit like that. But anyway, the wine was good. The view was amazing. Cool architecture.
Then we went to Bevagna I believe. It's this cool medieval town that's very picturesque Italian. We learned paper making, candle making, coin making, and silk making. Interesting..? I do want to go back and buy some postcards though. Then went to our hotel in.. Spoleto? I was very confused with the names. There was this cool bridge that people jumped off a lot to commit suicide apparently. Tragically beautiful? At night we went to Foligno where we had our first Apperitivo, without realizing that we were eating snails. All I can say it was interesting.. The last day we went to Spello, a very cute town at the top of a hill. Awesome view, cool buildings, cool church. Which pretty much explains a lot of Italy's cities.
All in all it was fun. I'm trying not to sound so bored.
