The nurses come by to pick up carryout lunches in big groups. Salads are easy enough; sandwiches get wrapped up and labelled; it's a pleasant, predictable start to the lunch rush.

One nurse lingers, leaves Juniper an extra tip — one so generous that Juniper almost refuses it outright. Ophelia must see the expression on her face or anticipate a counter, because:

Session One - Actual Notes

Wake up in the inn to old man, injured, banging on the door. Arrow in his shoulder. Ophelia heals him and Xinglu identifies the arrow as human. His village has been attacked, all children coming of age have been killed.

Cassian the courageous crypt has an eternal flame. One child came out of crypt bisected, implying necromancy. 

Ioxi is offended that Xinglu doesn’t eat anything but plain white rice. 

The innkeeper tells us that a human royal family - Castorly - has requested assistance regarding an uprising further in the same direction. 

Narlik finds the trail and we encounter 8 bandits. 

Initiative: Ophelia, Xing, Juniper, Bandit Group 1, Ixoi, Narlik, Bandit Group 2

We kill 3, 4 run away, and we make 1 - Steve - be our tour guide. 

Steve stinks

Steve sets off log trap and almost dies. Then almost dies again in pit trap. Steve is useless. 

Steve is a child and we are monsters. 

We make it to the town and its depressing. The towns inn tells us where the crypt is. We leave Steve and go on up the path. 

Ioxi discovers the Church is for The Water - protection against undead

Along the road we find an illusion of orcs, hear wolves howling - Juniper is afraid of wolves. Xing says come at me bro.  see two lights over a lake. 

It starts to get dark and foggy. Supernaturally so. Xing finds a body with no blood. 

We have been walking FUCKING FOREVER like an hour and a half the crypt is only suppose to a mile we haven’t found it. 

Think maybe endless maze? Portal? We turn around and head back.  Eventually find the lake. One light. Xing smells tobacco and we find a still lit pipe sitting on a rock at the base of a tree. We find an invisible body by throwing joe at it. Ixoi finds a ring that is magic. The pipe is also magic. We don’t know how. 

Xing takes the pipe and tobacco. We find 2 small row boats and drag them together. 

Boat 1: ophelia, preston, tristan, ioxi

Boat 2: xinglu, juniper, talasi, narlik 

Halfway across the lake we hear something large moving under the water. We need a bigger boat fuck. We go silent and carefully pass onto shore. Carefully. 

Through the fog we come across a cottage. There is a cauldron outfront -smells like gingerbread, looks very homey. This is clearly a witch. We don’t know it’s a witch. This is a red flag. 

The door is magic trapped with lightning because of course it is. Ioxi doesn’t die here which is good.

🏡 describe your ocs ideal house! give us a tour around! what’s their garden like? their bedroom? kitchen? where is it and how many people live there?

alexandria: ooo, this one's a little tough, because lexi kinda has a little bit of cognitive dissonance going on lol. she loves home and she always wants to be able to return to the reach, but she also is a very adventurous person and wants to explore the world! i think she has to strike somewhat of a balance between those two things (and she does eventually with the help of lucien). she does, ideally, want to have a home in markarth. it's kinda out-there, because before she can really do that, there's a LOT that has to go into rebuilding the rebellion, etc etc, but let's skip over that and say that things are all settled for the sake of the question. it's about idealism not realism lol.

she would want a pretty big house, not out of some materialistic thing but like !! she wants a big family (i talk abt children in this post), and she wants to be able to host big gatherings between all her friends, and she wants to have people stay with her when they visit. she wants a home that's just very open and welcoming and full of love, just like her. she would absolutely want to have a garden, as any alchemist would, and most of it grows ingredients like flowers, mushrooms, etc. she'd also like, cut off an arm and a leg if it means being able to plant as much jarrin root as she can, so that would def be there in her fantasy garden. and of course, she'd wanna have her alchemy lab right there for easy access.

for the bedroom, it's like entirely decked out in religious paraphernalia; hanging taproot, antlers, furs, spriggan heads, skulls and bones, and literally sooo many things like that. she has a habit of decorating any place she stays in more than a few days with at least a few of her religious touches, so if it's a permanent home? it's just one big shrine to namira and hircine. for her kitchen, i don't think she's that into cooking, but she'd have a modest kitchen. she mostly cooks to Not Starve, but she has a few recipes that she's very emotionally attached to (salmon stew and juniper berry pie to be specific), so she'd a nice oven to make it whenever she wants to give her family a little treat!

ophelia: filly is much more traditional than lexi; she was born in markarth, but hardly spent more than a year there before leaving. she grew up in the reach, travelling between different camps, and i think she really loved it. she's very fond of the karth river and would want easy and immediate access to it. so her #1 ideal place to live would be karthspire camp! an island right in the middle of the river?? sign her the fuck up. the city is stuffy, the homes are too quiet, and it's all far too dwarven for her taste. she doesn't like the carved stone; she's much more fond of the natural view of the mountains as they are, of living under the open sky, of hearing the rushing current of the karth at all hours of the day.

karthspire is a pretty large camp, so they definitely should have a decently sized garden to sustain themselves! there's a good bit of alchemy ingredients there, but most of it is probably food for the whole community. as for a kitchen, it's probably very big because it's all just one big, shared space. she probably does enjoy helping with the cooking, as they have to make large batches to make sure everyone's fed and so it's a process that takes quite a few people every time. she does rly enjoy it though!! she loves helping her community and it's always a fun social thing to cook together.

her bedroom though is the main thing she cares about cause like. she's a vaermina worshipper. she spends like 50% of her time sleeping lol, it's part of her job to the community. she usually only sleeps 12 hours a night, but there have been accounts of vaermina worshippers sleeping for days or weeks on end, so it's very important for her. that's part of why she likes living literally right on top of the river; the water acts as a great white noise to lull her to sleep. unless it's the dead of winter, she likes sleeping in the open tents, surrounded by fresh air and the creaking of the wooden planks as people walk back and forth while patrolling the area. she has a nice bed, not one of those stone atrocities you'd find in markarth, covered in nice furs and surrounded with lavender. she also definitely likes the staple hanging taproot!

alexandria: we all know lex, she LOVES flowers. like yes, they're pretty, but she's an alchemist, so she sees them as ingredients rather than decor lol. i feel like she probably ends up developing a little bit of a taste for 'em bc of her work so she ends up baking flowers into bread and pies sometimes.

i actually have a stupid anecdote about this! when she was around 19, she had a brief fling with this cute redguard boy who was staying at the inn for a few months. her brother, robin, gave him a little tip. "she loves flowers! you should bring her some when you see her :)" so he got his hands on some nice desert flowers and made a bouquet to give her when they met for a date. and lexi, who's never seen this type of flower, got super excited. the boy was like "ah yes i've successfully wooed her," but then she just. plucks one from the bouquet and eats it, and he just:

it's dumb as hell LMAO, but anyway that's how he learned that alexi is a huge alchemy nerd. the gesture did fly tho, because the #1 way into an alchemist's heart is dope ingredients.

as for what her favorite flower is, she loves red mountain flowers! they're great for restoring and fortifying magicka, so she uses them a lot. but in terms of appearance, she definitely likes yellow mountain flowers best! yellow is her favorite color, it reminds her of markarth a lot ♥

ophelia: she also loves flowers! both as an alchemy thing and just because they're pretty lol. many of vaermina's followers are extremely good alchemists, so she appreciates flowers a lot for their uses. her favorites are lavender, because they help her sleep easily so she always keeps some on her and in her room. i don't think she's the sort to make flower crowns very much (she's more partial to using things like polished bone or antlers), but if she did, she'd probably like to loop nightshade flowers around the horns of her forsworn headdress !!

FARTHORPE

Known as the gateway to the true north, Farthorpe is a small town which lies along the high road just before the landscape turns into the tundra that covers the north of Haelion. The town itself is generally considered unremarkable as anything but a stop along the road for supplies -- except for during the three days around the Winter Solstice, when their religious practice inspires a remarkable and renowned festival that attracts travelers from all over the continent year after year. 

THE FESTIVAL OF THE LONG NIGHTS

The people of Farthorpe worship Einaies and Einias, twin gods of change and cycles. The solstices, thus, are the holiest days of the year for them, and for hundreds of years they have been throwing the grand Festival of the Long Nights every winter solstice. Beginning at sundown on the day before the solstice, continuing through the solstice itself, and ending at the sunrise following the night after the solstice, the festival is held only when the sun has dropped below the horizon during those three days, with time for rest and reflection during the day.

During the festival, large white tents are set up in a field just outside of town where local artisans and traders from nearby towns can set up stalls with goods, art, and rich, warm traditional foods like fried dough and mulled wine. 

Games and activities at the Festival include:

HIDDEN MASKS - Einaies, goddess of change, is oft represented by elaborately carved masks, many of which are sold by local artisans at the festival. The children of the town conduct elaborate hide-and-seek games while wearing these masks, and can often be found anywhere within the town or in the surrounding areas hiding from their playmates. Occasionally, by the second day, when enough mulled wine has gone around, some of the town’s adults will start their own game, with a pool of tal as a reward to whoever is found last. 

THE FLOATING DANCERS - Einias, god of cycles, is frequently worshipped in the form of a cyclical dance; during the festival, several of Einias’ clerics participate in a three-day-long "floating dance,” suspending themselves in the air on long white silk scarves. 

FEATS OF STRENGTH - arm wrestling competitions and other similar strength contests are popular at the festival, with spectators placing bets on competitors, are a good way to win a few tal, and as long as no one notices, gamblers and competitors using magic to influence the outcome of the contest isn’t strictly forbidden.

GAMES OF LUCK - gambling of other sorts is popular, too, in the festival, with the people of Farthorpe believing that Einaies and Einias manifest their blessings on devoted followers by bestowing good luck. Games such as roulette and luck-based card games are popular throughout the festival, with a number of stalls set up for betting games like thimblerig or three-card-monte.

SEARCH FOR THE SILVER MOON - akin to a real-world Easter Egg Hunt, the third night of the festival is known for the Search for the Silver Moon -- small white orbs filled with prizes such as sweets, small trinkets, and occasionally a few tal are hidden in obscure or hard-to-reach places throughout the town for people to find, while one single orb of bright silver is also hidden. Though nothing is contained within the silver orb, the one who finds it is ceremoniously crowned King, Queen, or Regent of the Solstice, and given an ornate silver crown to wear for the remainder of the festival and good luck for the remainder of the year. 

THE TENT OF FORTUNE - a traveling mage by the name of Horatio Rime makes his way to the Festival every year and sets up a tent in which, for 2 tal, he will tell the fortune of anyone in town, with an accurate if vague prediction of what they will face in the year to come. There is often a long line in front of his tent, as everyone in town wants to hear what he has to say.

OUT OF CHARACTER

About a week north along the high road from Balgud, on the way towards Lodorwind, the King’s Gambit is making a rest stop to gather supplies in the small town of Farthorpe, their visit coinciding with the three-day Festival of the Long Nights.  They will arrive the day before the festival and stay in town for the duration, leaving the morning after the final night. A shop inventory of items available for purchase in the town or at the festival can be found below the cut -- please message the main if you would like to purchase anything while in town.

Two new characters will be joining the party while the Gambit is stopped in Farthorpe -- the Druid, Juniper Farheart (played by Wren) and the Spy, Nightjar (played by Roman). Please welcome these new characters, create bonds with them, and have your characters meet them anywhere in or around the festival.

MISSIONS

1. AN EASY COIN. With gambling such a large part of the Festival’s entertainments, it would be easy to make some quick tal with a smart bet, a strong arm, or a sneaky trick. Whether its  in the arm-wrestling contest, the hide-and-seek game, or through some other method, people are loose with their money and looser with their mulled wine, so if you keep alert you’ll find any number of opportunities. ( REWARD: up to 100 tal ) OPEN TO MULTIPLE PAIRS

2. RISKY BUSINESS. Local artisan and mask-seller Lark Lysander is furious that her out-of-town business rival has set up a stand just three stalls down from the shop she sets up every year at the Festival. She’s offering some cash or one of her rare enchanted masks to anyone willing to intimidate him into closing up shop early. ( REWARD: 50 tal or an enchanted mask of roughly equivalent value ) OPEN

3. THE OUTSKIRTS. Late into the first day of the Festival, a few travelers reported that a pack of violent owlbears had been spotted just beyond the field where the Festival is taking place. The town guard is offering a reward to whatever adventurers will drive them off or get rid of them while the rest of the town is asleep for the day. ( REWARD: 50 tal ) LLYR & KHOVAKRI

4. THE GRINCH WHO STOLE SOLSTICE. Several merchants at the festival have reported wares and tal going missing while their back was turned, and they believe the same person to be behind each of the many thefts. They have come together to offer a reward for whoever can catch the thief and return their stolen merchandise to them. ( REWARD: 40 tal ) OPEN 

5. A TEST OF ILLUSIONS. Though magic is not as rare here as it was in Balgud, the arcane arts are still impressive to a town so far from the university at Lodorwind. Several local children have been telling rumors of a great wizard or sorcerer come to the festival and, pockets loose with their saved allowances, they might be willing to throw a few tal each to a particularly impressive mage willing to put on a little show for them. ( REWARD: 45 tal ) OPHELIA & SYLVAR

6. A RARE COMMODITY. Legend has it that the first snowfall of the year in the region around Farthorpe causes the blossoming of sale’tomah, a rare and mystical herb with powerful arcane healing properties, known as the only cure for several curse-related diseases. When the snow begins to fall for the first time just past midnight on the second day of the festival, it only makes sense to leave town and scour the surrounding areas for any sign of the flower, which fetches a high price in places like nearby Lodorwind -- if you can pick it before someone else gets to it. 7. AN ABOMINABLE PROBLEM. On the way into town, the Gambit splits up for a while, and someone hears a cry for help -- an elf just a little ways off the high road has stumbled into a Yeti’s den, drawn the Yeti out of its hibernation, and found herself outmatched. Not only is it a good deed to help a fellow traveller in need, but any bodies in the Yeti’s den might have treasure on them if you can get to them. ( REWARD: 70 tal ) JUNIPER & PHOENIX 

8. BODY GUARDS. Local mischief-making children grown bored with their elaborate game of hide and seek have taken it upon themselves to try to interfere with the Floating Dancers, daring each other to see who can get one of them to come down first. The head priest at the temple, a human woman named Olivia Rosen, is seeking two bodyguards to keep watch over the dancers as the festival comes to a close to prevent the children from interfering any further. 9. A LEGENDARY PREY. Fortune-teller Horatio Rime predicts that you will be the one to finally track and corner the legendary Great Bear, a giant creature said to roam the southern parts of the Haelion tundra; according to legend, the Bear will grant one wish to anyone worthy enough to defeat him in honest and fair combat. ( REWARD: one wish spell ) SYLVAR & BREN

10. ROGUE KALASHTAR. Farthorpe is a good place to hear rumors of strange travelers passing through on their way north, and one particular rumor seems to have taken the town’s attention captive lately: that of a man who could speak telepathically, though the memories of those he encountered along his way seem to be unclear... 11. Chapter 1: I Guess You Could Call it a Fellowship

Xinglu woke up in the early morning hours to the loud thudding sounds of someone banging on the door of the nearby inn. His friends and companions had decided to stop here for the night, but Xinglu had never much liked being cooped up inside when the option for sleeping in the fresh air under a sky full of stars was an option. He stood from where he’d been laying on his bed roll, laid out in the grass behind the inn which was now damp with morning dew, and went to see what the commotion was all about. From the corner of his eye, he noticed Narlik - their Grippli companion who, much like Xinglu, preferred to sleep outdoors - crawling down the roof to peek over the side of the building as well. 

An old man, human by the look of him, was being ushered inside by the inn-keeper and even in the dim morning light, Xinglu could tell he was injured. Looking down the dirt and gravel path the man had just come from, the dhamphir went to check if there was an immediate danger following him.

Unfortunately, Xinglu must have still been groggy from the abrupt awakening, and he lost his footing, slipping on the newly wet grass and falling in a manner that was utterly undignified for a monk of his stature. Xinglu stood up quickly and glanced around, taking some relief that Narlik must have already slipped inside which meant that no one saw that particular misstep. He dusted himself off before anyone could see the dirt on his robes and headed inside to see how the old man fared.

Ioxi was already up and working on getting a fire started in the hearth, undoubtedly to get breakfast started while Juniper was sitting nearby with Talasi next to her, his boots kicked up on the table in front of him. Ophelia was the one busily fussing over the old man - an arrow was protruding from his shoulder and his cloak and shirt were soaked with blood.

“I’m afraid I’m going to have to break it,” she was saying in her posh accent, nodding to herself and snapping the arrow without giving the man a chance to protest. He grunted in pain, which turned into a moan when she pushed the head all the way through his back to remove it, and holding it up triumphantly, “There we are!”

Xing reached out and took the arrow, turning it over in his hands, inspecting the head shape and craftsmanship. Ophelia briefly placed her hands over the man’s injury where they glowed purple with the necromancer’s answer to healing. The old man shuddered at the chill of her spell, but it did the trick and his wounds evaporated. 

“Thank you,” he rasped, still shivering faintly - it wasn’t an unusual reaction to necromatic magics, “Please, you must help - the village where I live - we have a ceremony every year for the children who are coming of age. We’ve been attacked and they’ve all been killed. Please, you must help us!”  

“Whatcha thinkin’ about there, Xing?” Juniper chimed in, looking at Xinglu who was still holding the arrow that had come out of the old man. They had known each other a long time and Juniper was one of the few people who had learned to read the abnormally quiet dhamphir. “This is human-made,” he answered quietly. Narlik jumped onto the nearby table, his tongue shooting out to reach the arrow and Xinglu let him take it. Even broken in half, it was very nearly too big for the little frog-boy to use properly. 

“Well that about figures, don’t it?” Juniper remarked rhetorically, turning her attention back to watching Ioxi fix breakfast.

“I was shot on my way here… I didn’t see by who…” The old man groaned. 

“Please, do tell us more,” Ophelia pressed the old man earnestly, “Tell us everything you can about what’s happened.”  

“The Crypt of Cassian the Courageous lies near our village, and within it is the Eternal Flame. Every few years, the children who are coming of age gather and we throw a little ceremony for them. They must go forth and retrieve some of the flame, and return it to our church. One of the girls… she was bisected when she came out again. Cleaved in -” 

“That’s a big word for a human,” Juniper remarked without looking up, “Bisected, I mean. What is that, word of the day?”

“It is impressive for a commoner,” Tristan chimed in, agreeing. He was Ophelia’s younger brother, visage completely obscured by his armor. It was almost too easy to forget that Tristan was very, very dead. 

”Maybe he’s more educated than most,” Ioxi offered neutrally, their attention more focused on the beautiful sunny side up eggs they were frying and the bacon that was crackling musically in the skillet.   

“Don’t mind them any, please continue,” Ophelia gave her companions a reproachful look, and Juniper shrugged. 

“We fear the state of the girl… well, it could imply necromancy,” The old man finished, trying his best to ignore the dismissiveness of adventurers. 

“Oh, I suppose we should go take a look. It may be someone else who is wise to the great love of Urgathoa!” Ophelia gushed happily. 

“We aren’t going anywhere on an empty stomach. Breakfast first!” Ioxi replied, “Who wants a plate?” They held up one of the cooking dishes from over the fire for emphasis. 

A flurry of hands went up - everyone except Xinglu and Tristan. “Can we get a pound of your best beef, raw?” Ophelia requested.

“Uh… sure,” The inn-keep agreed falteringly, going to fetch the hunk of raw meat for the two siblings. He returned a moment later, and offered it to them - and Tristan wasted no time in digging into the uncooked meal eagerly. 

Ioxi tried to slip a cooked egg into Xinglu’s bowl of plain white rice, but he lifted it out of their reach, eating peacefully, “Please at least salt the rice!” the little halfling all but begged him. Ioxi found Xinglu’s love of plain, unseasoned white rice to be offensive - a fact that most halflings would likely agree with. With all the flavors and food in the world… it really was an affront to nature. Even more so than Tristan and Ophelia eating raw flesh - at least Ophelia would season it first. 

“I don’t see why we should get involved with some necromancer who's going around cuttin’ people in half,” Juniper remarked over her plate of fresh food, “We already got one of those,” she motioned in Ophelia’s general direction. 

“What if he’s the wizard we’re looking for? Or maybe at least knows of the wizard,” Ioxi thought out loud. 

“There might be treasure,” Talasi drawled, nudging Juniper with a grin. 

“...see, now those things might convince me, peach,” she grinned back. 

The Inn-keeper cleared his throat, “A letter also came this morning. The Castorly family further west has requested assistance regarding an uprising. They’re requesting aid from anyone in the area.” 

“Now that’s interesting,” Juniper piped in.

“I wonder if they mean they want assistance squashing a rebellion or if they want help making a rebellion against the Castorly currently in charge,” Ioxi mused outloud. 

“Either way, that’s a weird fucking thing to put out into the world as a general call like that… where absolutely anyone could get ahold of that information,” Juniper replied. 

“I wonder if a lesser family member doesn’t agree with how the monarchy is being handled,” Ophelia agreed. 

“What sort of fool would advertise they were planning to overthrow their government so… blatantly?” Juniper replied.

“I believe we’ve met them before, haven’t we?” Ophelia asked no one in particular, “Before our city fell, when we still had our crowns. They’re a human nation.”

“That explains it,” Juniper replied, going back to breakfast. 

“Why do you hate humans so much?” Ioxi chimed in curiously.

“Hate’s a strong word, dumplin’ - I just think humans are rather short-lived and stupid.” 

“Excuse me?” Ophelia raised an eyebrow at her, as the only (living?) human in the group, it was fair enough she take some offense. 

“This ain’t a secret, beansprout.” 

“I’m sure she just means peasants, Ophelia,” Tristan offered, trying to keep the peace. 

“Oh, of course. Peasants really are rather.. Dirty and poor,” Ophelia relented, pacified. 

“Yeah… poor people are the worst,” Juniper, a poor people, rolled her eyes. A bit of sarcasm evidently missed by Ophelia.

“Why don’t we examine what’s going on with these poor dead children and then we can continue onto Castorly’s land - it’s only a little further in the same direction. We won’t be going out of our way at all,” Ophelia decided. 

“Alright,” Ioxi agreed, nodding along. 

Juniper and Talasi shrugged in unison, “Seems fair enough.” 

The party finished their assorted breakfasts quickly after that, then gathered their gear and headed out onto the open road. “I can find the trail!” Narlik piped up helpfully, hopping over to the road, where a trail of blood was clearly visible among the blood and gravel.

The party fell into step behind the Grippli and headed out away from the tavern and into the more forested area outside of town. It wasn’t terribly long that they reached a point with high raised cliffs on either side of the road, each jutting out in an opposing way- as though they had at one point been a single large hill that a wizard passing through didn’t want to climb or go around, and so had blasted their way directly through. 

“Nice place for an ambush,” Talasi drawled, looking up at them, as the group noticed a poorly concealed trip line not far ahead. 

 Narlik seemed to agree, hopping on ahead, and with a few nimble jumps, had climbed all the way to the top of the cliff. Sure enough, four bandits were crouched low against the stoney surface, and four more were across on the other side. The little frog boy took a deep breath and whippit! His tongue shot out to snap the bow out of the hand of one of the bandits, who screamed, startled, “What the fuck!?” 

In a heartbeat, Xinglu was on top of the cliff face as well, with Ophelia climbing up the stone face right behind him. Without a word, he did a spinning kick to the first bandit he saw, following through with a solid kick to the face when the man was still trying to recover from the first impact. He may have under-estimated his own strength when he heard the tell-tale crunch of bone and the man tumbled over the side of the outcropping to land lifelessly on the trail with a morbid thwap. 

“Mercy,” Juniper remarked, not having bothered to move from where she was standing on the path, cringing at the noise the body made when it hit the ground in disgust. She hung back with Talasi, a safe distance from the fighting - the kitsune girl had never been much built for violence. 

“Can you give us a reason why we shouldn’t kill you all?” Ophelia asked, standing at her full height - over six feet and imposing for a human, her wickedly curved scythe glittered menacingly in the afternoon sun. 

“Uh…” The bandit she was staring down stuttered.

“Not good enough,” she sighs, and brought the weapon down, cleaving the man in two with a wet sounding squelch.  

“Keep one alive, would you?” Juniper called up to Xinglu, “I want to talk to ‘em.” 

The other four bandits on the opposite side of the path were standing, looking unsure of if they should even try to stand and fight, or if  running while they had the chance was the wiser course of action. Xinglu looked over at them, drawing himself to his full height, and pulling back the paper talisman that usually hung in front of his off-color eye, fixing the group with a look of pure intimidation. It was effective in sending the other four absolutely bolting for their lives. 

Xing escorted the last standing bandit back down the stone face and over to Juniper who looked him over. 

“Howdy, peach. What’s your name?” She asked sweetly. 

“Uh… Steve?” The bandit remarked, nervously. 

“He stinks,” Ioxi remarked, wrinkling their nose. 

“He reeks,” Juniper agreed and with a wave of her hand and the simple cast of a Prestidigitation spell, Steve the Bandit was clean - quite possibly for the first time in his life. 

“...thanks?” Steve said falteringly. 

“Listen, Steve, I’ll make a deal with you,” Juniper said, “You be our tour guide for all the traps your companions there set,” she nodded towards the trip wire by the tree line, “And we won’t do to you what we did to your little friends. Deal?” 

“Uh, yes, yep,” he agreed quickly, watching in abject horror as Tristain tore an arm off the body that had previously been a friend of his and started to eat it like one would a drumstick. 

“You’re not even going to season that?” Ioxi remarked mostly under their breath, a hint of offense creeping into their voice.  

“We should take this one with us,” Ophelia said cheerfully, and Tristian, still chewing, tied a rope around the corpse’s waist in order to drag the body along with them. 

“Try not to pay them any mind,” Juniper redirected Steve the Bandit’s attention back to her with her most charming smile, “Why don’t you start by disarming that one for us?” she asked sweetly, pointing to the wire just ahead. 

“...Okay,” he agreed reluctantly, walking up to the line. Steve crouched down by it, examining the set up for a moment, then he pulled out a dagger and cut the line. 

A massive log came swinging down from the trees, impacting Steve with a thunk, and knocking him to the ground with a groan. “I guess that was one way to disable it,” Juniper sighed. 

Ophelia stepped forward, “Are you sure we need to keep this one?” she asked, already calling upon her dark magic to heal the boy. 

“He might be able to point out other traps along the way,” Juniper answered, motioning for Steve to continue leading the way down the path when he’d recovered from Ophelia’s healing chill. 

The party hadn’t been walking long when Juniper noticed a poorly disguised pitfall trap on the path ahead. Xinglu, escorting Steve the Bandit at the front of their procession didn’t seem to see it, so she grabbed the back of his robe to stop her old friend from (another) unfortunate fall. 

Beside her, Ioxi did the same with Steve, clearly having also taken note of the trap immediately in front of them, “You’re really not good at this,” they remarked. 

“I do think he’s outlived his usefulness,” Ophelia lamented with a sigh. 

“He’s just havin’ an off day, aren’tcha, peach?” Juniper answered for him. 

“Sorry…” Steve muttered, eyeing Ophelia and Tristan nervously. 

Luckily for everyone involved (especially Steve) the rest of the trip to the town was uneventful, with no more traps, bandits or any other misfortune befalling them. 

“This place looks lower than a snake’s belly in a wagon rut,” Juniper drawled quietly as they wandered into the town square. It was littered with decorations laying limp and soggy in the mud- a long abandoned celebration. Instead, the town was almost eerily silent without a single soul in sight, as though the whole area was hushed under mourning. It probably was. 

“Shall we see who might be available in the bar?” Ophelia asked, pointing to a rickety looking building just off the town square. 

“Maybe we can get elevensies,” Ioxi agreed, a touch hopefully, it was about time they stop for another meal, after all. Especially after all that walking. 

“Tristan, you should wait out here with our… acquisition,” Ophelia directed, with a casual nod towards the dead body her brother was still dragging along behind him at the end of a rope. 

“Yes, of course, wouldn’t want to frighten the peasants,” he agreed. 

The rest of the group, sans Tristan, headed inside. It was quiet and unusually somber for a bar - a sad g,ray building full of sad, gray people all drinking sad, gray drinks in silence. 

“It’s a dirge in here,” Juniper muttered under her breath to Xinglu, “Howdy!” She greeted the barkeep - and the entire room - with a wide smile. 

The townsfolk looked up at this strange group of visitors, morose and uninterested, “Hello,” the keep answered, seemingly for everyone. 

“It’s to our understandin’ that ya’ll have had some might horrible misfortune as of late. An old man came to find us a town over, and told us about ya’lls children. We’ve come t’ see if there’s anything we can do t’ help.” 

“What are you, one’a them adventuring fellowships of heroes or something?” 

“I guess you could call it a fellowship of sorts,” Juniper agreed. 

With Juniper talking it could be a while before they headed out anywhere - and it was looking less and less like elevensies were going to happen, so Ioxi opted to slip out of the bar while their companions were chatting to have a look around the depressing village. 

On a path heading out of the town, just a short walk away and up a small hill, Ioxi found a small church dedicated to The Watcher - one of the primary human Gods - known for his protection against the undead. Ioxi looked back down the hill where Tristan was chewing on an arm bone while he waited outside the tavern. The Watcher didn’t seem to be working today. Still, the irony of a potential necromancer in a town loyal to The Watcher wasn’t lost on Ioxi - and it was definitely suspicious. They decided to head back and see if the others were ready to get on with their trip - they didn’t love the idea of spending the night in this sad, gray town. 

“Thank’s a bunch for takin’ him off our hands!” Ioxi arrived just in time to catch the rest of their party leaving the tavern, Juniper in the middle of a farewell, “Behave yourself, Steve. Get a real job, mind yer manners. Bathe.” 

“We’ll find out what happened to your children,” Ophelia promised, chiming in on the way out the door, “The crypt they keep talking about isn’t far - just a mile or so up the road,” she continued, thinking outloud, “We should be able to make it there and back before nightfall. It’s still early in the day.” 

“Yep,” Talasi agreed, ideally spinning the cartridge on his revolver. 

“Sounds good to me,” Ioxi agreed, and Xinglu nodded quietly.
