Verse 14

Some manuscripts have Καὶ μετὰ instead of Μετὰ δὲ.

μετὰ with the articular aorist passive infinitive τὸ παραδοθῆναι (from παραδίδωμι) and the accusative subject Ἰωάννην means, “after John was arrested”.

Ἰησοῦς is the subject of ἦλθεν (from ἔρχομαι) which is modified by the locative prepositional phrase εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν.

The present participle κηρύσσων (from κηρύσσω) is a participle of manner modifying ἔρχομαι. τὸ εὐαγγέλιον (ESV, NASB, NET: “gospel”; NIV, NRSV, HCSB: “good news”) is the direct object of κηρύσσω, modified by τοῦ θεοῦ which could be a genitive of source (“good news from God”) or perhaps an objective genitive (“good news about God”); NIGTC cautions that no one genitive sense may be exclusively intended.

Verse 15

The participle λέγων (from λέγω) is a second participle of manner with ἦλθεν. It is seen as redundant and so omitted in NIV & HCSB. ICC says it is probably not original, but Metzger has no note on this. 

ὅτι indicates direct discourse, omitted in most translations.

ὁ καιρὸς is the subject of the perfect passive Πεπλήρωται (from πληρόω, most translations: “fulfill”; NIV, NLT: “the time has come”). NIGTC notes that the translation “fulfilled”, while etymologically correct, is misleading since the term is used to denote the the realization of prophecy; the sense here is simply that the allotted time has filled up, and so now the Kingdom has come. NIGTC says, ‘the decisive moment has now arrived.’ EGGNT says the perfect is intensive, focusing on the present reality.

ἡ βασιλεία is the subject of the perfect ἤγγικεν (from ἐγγίζω), which is also intensive. Although ἐγγίζω could mean either “is near” or “has arrived”, NIGTC argues that the perfect tense, along with the previous clause about the time being fulfilled, indicates that Jesus is not saying merely that the Kingdom is near, but has arrived. The genitive modifier τοῦ θεοῦ could be subjective (“God reigns”), or perhaps indicates possession or source.

The present tense of the imperatives μετανοεῖτε (from μετανοέω “repent”; CEV: “turn back to God”) and πιστεύετε (from πιστεύω) indicates general precepts, valid for a variety of parties at different places/times (EGGNT). The object of the thing to be believed in is rarely depicted with the preposition ἐν, here ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ.

Verse 16

παράγω (11x) here is “I pass by” (BDAG), from παρά + ἄγω “I lead, go”. ESV: “passing alongside”; NASB: “going along”; NIV: “walked beside”; NET: “went along”. The participle παράγων is temporal-contemporaneous with ὁράω below. The locative prepositional phrase παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν modifies παράγω. It is not unusual for prepositions (here παρὰ) to be repeated after prefixed verbs.

Σίμωνα καὶ Ἀνδρέαν are the compound direct object of εἶδεν (from ὁράω). τὸν ἀδελφὸν is in apposition to Ἀνδρέαν, modified by the genitive of relation Σίμωνος.

The hapax legomenon ἀμφιβάλλω, from ἀμφι “around” + βάλλω “I cast, throw”, is “I cast [a net around fish]”. The present participle ἀμφιβάλλοντας is the complement in a double accusative construction after ὁράω. ἀμφιβάλλω is modified by the locative prepositional phrase ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ.

ὁ ἁλιεύς (5x) strictly means “sailor” (cf. ὁ ἅλς, “salt”, in 9:49), but by implication means “fisher, fisherman”. The understood subject of ἦσαν is Σίμωνα καὶ Ἀνδρέαν, and ἁλιεῖς the predicate nominative.

Verse 17

The subject of εἶπεν (from λέγω) is ὁ Ἰησοῦς, which usually has the article in Mark. αὐτοῖς is the indirect object.

The adverb δεῦτε (12x) is used as a hortatory particle meaning, “come here!, come on!” (BDAG), used to address parties of two or more (the singular is δεῦρο, 9x). Most translations render δεῦτε with ὀπίσω μου (lit. “Come after me”) as “Follow me”.

ὑμᾶς is the direct object of the future ποιήσω (from ποιέω), with ἁλιεῖς as the complement in a double accusative construction. EGGNT says the construction is ‘marked’ by the aorist infinitive γενέσθαι (from γίνομαι), although the construction would be intelligible without it (and is omitted by some translations). ἁλιεῖς is modified by the objective genitive ἀνθρώπων.

Verse 18

The aorist participle ἀφέντες (from ἀφίημι, here “I leave”) is temporal-antecedent with the aorist ἠκολούθησαν (from ἀκολουθέω). ἀκολουθέω takes a dative direct object, here αὐτῷ, and is modified by the adverb εὐθὺς; NIGTC says the role of εὐθὺς here ‘is more to keep the story going with vigour than to comment on the specific nature of their response.’  

τό δίκτυον (12x) is, “net”. τὰ δίκτυα is the direct object of ἀφίημι.

Verse 19

προβαίνω (5x) is, “I go ahead”, “advance” (BDAG); most translations, “going on”. The aorist participle προβὰς is probably temporal-antecedent with ὁράω below.

ὀλίγον, the neuter accusative of the adjective ὀλίγος, “little, few”, functions as a locative adverb modifying προβαίνω: “a little farther” (most translations).

Jesus is the understood subject of εἶδεν (from ὁράω). The direct object of the verb is Ἰάκωβον ... καὶ Ἰωάννην. Ἰάκωβος becomes “Iacobus” in Latin, which evolved to “Iacomus”, and the -co dropped out of the French “Jaimes”, then into English as “James”. The article τὸν is substantival, modified by τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου (lit. “the one of Zebedee”); “son” is understood, a common construction with familial relationships in NT Greek. τὸν τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου is in apposition to Ἰάκωβον and τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ is in apposition to Ἰωάννην.

EGGNT says αὐτοὺς is a third direct object of ὁράω, with the participle καταρτίζοντας below functioning as the complement in a double accusative construction, literally “he saw Jacob ... and John ... and them restoring the nets”. ICC says instead that καὶ αὐτοὺς means, “who also”, i.e. “who also were in a boat”, as were Andrew and Simon. Most translations omit καὶ αὐτοὺς and take the participle as a complement to Ἰάκωβον ... καὶ Ἰωάννην.

καταρτίζω (13x) is “I put in order, restore” (BDAG), from κατά + ἄρτιος “ready, complete, functional”. This could mean a variety of things, from “mending” (most translations), “preparing” (NIV), “cleaning” or “folding” (BDAG). The verb is modified by the locative prepositional phrase ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ; τὰ δίκτυα (see v. 18) is the direct object.

Verse 20

Jesus is the understood subject of ἐκάλεσεν, modified by the adverb εὐθὺς; αὐτούς is the direct object.

ἀφίημι here is, “I leave” (see v. 18). The aorist participle ἀφέντες could be temporal-antecedent with ἀπέρχομαι below, although most render it as an attendant circumstance participle, with an indicative “they left”. τὸν πατέρα is the direct object of the verb, with Ζεβεδαῖον in apposition. The locative prepositional phrase ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ modifies the verb.

ὁ μισθωτός (3x) is, “hired worker”, from ὁ μισθός “wage”. Most translations, “hired men”; ESV: “hired servants”. The prepositional phrase μετὰ τῶν μισθωτῶν also modifies ἀφίημι.

The subject of ἀπῆλθον (from ἀπέρχομαι) is Jacob and John from verse 19. ἀπῆλθον + ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ (lit. “go away behind him”; see v. 17) is rendered by most translations as “followed him”.

268 Directors and the end of the blog

This post marks the end of the Ask a Director experiment. I’m so grateful to all who have contributed, supported and engaged with it over the past six and a half years. 

This blog was started at a time when I felt incredibly alone in the directing field. I had always been taught that a director operates solo, that it was a lonely career and above all, it was based on scarcity. This was a style of working and living that didn't fit for me. I wanted to talk to other directors about their practice and thoughts about the field, both national and international. This blog was started as a way to connect, to uplift other directors and to create a conversation about the changing field and practices. 

It's surpassed all of these goals and brought me more joy than I can name. 

I'm now at a moment where my practice and advocacy are taking different and exciting paths and it's time for me to put this site to bed. I remain committed to uplifting other directors, to talking about the practice, to flattening hierarchies, to opening doors for new ways of working, and leading rehearsal rooms, companies, and classrooms away from silos and vacuums. Featuring these 268 different directors was just the beginning. 

I encourage you all to hire them (and others), advocate for them (and others) and choose to work in a system that values connection and generosity.

Noong huling bahagi ng 1980s, tumulong ang IBM na lumikha ng isang network ng mga supercomputer center na tinawag na NSFNET (ang National Science Foundation Network), isa sa mga unang network na gumamit ng TCP / IP. Mahalaga na ipinanganak ng proyekto ang Internet na nagbabago sa ating mga kabuhayan magpakailanman. Bago ang Internet, ang mga siyentipiko at mananaliksik ay kailangang maglakbay — madalas sa labas ng bansa — para sa pag-compute ng mga mapagkukunan at upang makipagtulungan sa mga pangunahing proyekto. Noong unang bahagi ng 1980s, isang maagang Internet ay nagsimulang lumitaw: isang primitive, regional telecommunications network na nag-uugnay sa maraming mga pambansang laboratoryo at mga supercomputing center na ma-access lamang ng mga may kasanayang eksperto. Malaki ang papel ng Internet sa larangan ng edukasyon. Ang pamayanan ng akademiko ay sumailalim sa malalim na pagbabago sa mga taong ito, na ipinapalagay ang mga bagong sukat na naiimpluwensyahan ng mga application na hinihimok ng teknolohiya. Ang Internet ay isang napakahalagang mapagkukunan ng impormasyon para sa mga mag-aaral at isang tool upang mapahusay ang kanilang pagiging produktibo (Jones, 2002; Metzger etai., 2003; Kirschner & Karpiński, 2010). Tinutulungan nito ang mga mag-aaral na mapalawak ang kanilang kaalaman sa akademiko sa pamamagitan ng pag-access sa mundo ng impormasyon at sa pamamagitan din ng madaling pakikipag-usap sa kanilang pamayanan sa akademya (Telia, 2007). Hindi alintana kung gaano karaming mga kalamangan at kahinaan ang tungkol sa kung paano maaaring tulungan tayo ng internet at socials media sa aming mga pag-aaral sa akademiko, hindi maikakaila na binago ng rebolusyon na ito ang ating pangkalahatang lipunan at ang aming kabuhayan. Karamihan sa atin ay magtatalo tungkol sa kung paano ang modernong paraan o ang tradisyunal na paraan alinman ang mas mahusay ngunit ang totoo ay ganap na nakasalalay sa tao kung ginugugol niya o hindi ang kanyang oras nang matalino sa pag-aaral.
