Giant Rooks at Jahrhunderthalle Frankfurt, 11.02.2024

Biggest surprise of the evening: despite only arriving 1.5 hours before the doors opened (and being in the slowest entry queue, at least it felt like that...) we still made it to the front row! On the far right, but we still had a good view, especially as the guys always make sure to use the entirety of the stage, no matter how big it is. Giant Rooks' 2nd long-player How Have You Been? is out now and made it to n° 1 of the German album charts - congrats!! We got to experience a few songs live that weren't yet on the setlist a month ago in Luxembourg and also a more impressive stage equipment due to the much bigger size of the stage and venue (sold out btw!). The tour goes on, including mutliple dates in the UK and US, and I can only recommend to check them out if you haven't yet.

Without doubt Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer (1907-90) was one of postwar Germany's most successful architects: his office Kraemer, Sieverts & Pfenning (later Kraemer, Sieverts & Partner) for almost four decades decidedly influenced the architecture of the Federal Republic with high-profile buildings like the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt/Main, numerous bank and insurance buildings as well as other industrial and cultural buildings. Influenced by prewar International Style and the example of Mies van der Rohe Kraemer gave the young German democracy an international  Concurrently Kraemer as professor at Technical University Braunschweig together with fellow with fellow professors Walter Henn and Dieter Oesterlen established what came to be coined “Braunschweiger Schule”. 

Over time Kraemer idiom changed quite significantly and in later years became much more sculptural and brutalist, an indication of his moving with the times. In 2007 the publication "Gesetz und Freiheit - Der Architekt Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer" was published by Jovis Verlag alongside the eponymous exhibition at Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum and documents Kraemer's built and theoretical work as well as his teaching. Beyond topics like Kraemer’s early postwar educational journey to Chicago with students of TU Braunschweig the authors also don’t omit Kraemer’s high ranking position during the Nazi era: Kraemer served as architect of trust for the “Deutsche Arbeitsfront”, the German Labour Front, the regime’s single most largest organization, and in this capacity built for industrial enterprises and arms factories. Among these buildings also were forced labour camps. 

Through its broad approach the book provides interesting insights into the life and work of a very busy postwar architect: his design process, his influence as professor and his long-term relationship with architectural photographer Heinrich Heidersberger are equally addressed and draw a comprehensive picture of Kraemer the architect and human being.

Ahead of the Wall Of Eyes album release on 26th January there will be a series of events at a selection of independent cinemas between 18th and 25th January. Wall Of Eyes, On Film will celebrate the new album and collaborations with Paul Thomas Anderson.

The evening will include the world film premiere of Friend Of A Friend and a presentation of Wall Of Eyes, both directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and shot on 35mm filmas well as a Wall Of Eyes album playback in surround sound for one time only.

My second time seeing Philine Sonny live, and even though I have to admit I preferred the more intimate setting when she supported Ian Hooper and it was just her and her guitar, I was still very impressed by her performance (and that of her band). Definitely considering getting tickets for her headline tour in May 😊

[Video] IDLES und Coldplays Chris Martin präsentieren Video zu "Grace"!

Bevor morgen am 16. Februar das fünfte IDLES-Album "TANGK" erscheint, teilt die Band noch das Musikvideo zu "Grace". Das Ganze ist eine Nachbildung des ikonischen "Yellow"-Videos von Coldplay, mit moderner Deepfake-KI-Technologie angereichert, die den Eindruck erweckt, dass Chris Martin höchstpersönlich den Song singt.

IDLES-Frontmann Joe Talbot sprach nach einem intensiven Traum mit dem Coldplay-Songwriter über die Idee, woraufhin dieser nicht nur seinen Segen gab, um die spannende Idee in die Tat umzusetzen, sondern half später auch dabei, die KI weiterzuentwickeln, um das Video noch realistischer aussehen zu lassen.

Nach ein paar turbulenten Tagen in New York letzte Woche, wo die Band bei Jimmy Fallons Tonight Show vorbeischaute, um dort "Gift Horse" zu performen, sind IDLES nun zurück auf heimischem Boden in Großbritannien, wo sie einen Pop-up-Shop eröffnen und ein Wochenende lang Special Shows in London und Bristol spielen, um die Veröffentlichung von "TANGK" zu feiern. In genau einem Monat steht die Band dann auch hierzulande bei ihrer bisher größten Tour auf den Bühnen.
