What makes an epic? Is it length? On that count, Hawaii would qualify; the full roadshow version (which I watched on VHS – it’s not readily available) runs 189 minutes with overture, intermission, and exit music, and even the readily available version runs 160. The Hokusai Sketch-Books: Selections from the Manga

This is a gem of a book. Written and edited by novelist James Michener, this is an absolutely lovely production of an important book. While this copy is a stated first edition, it is stamped as a review copy, and I think it was originally issued with a printed dust jacket. But the real joy of this book is Hokusai’s incredible work. With hundreds of images printed in three colors and organized by theme—people, fauna, flora, landscape, etc.—Hokusai’s brush breathes life into even the most mundane of scenes. And the images are of such finished quality and depth that calling them “sketchbooks” feels like a gross understatement.

The Historical drama movie (also known as Master Of The Island), starring Charlton Heston and Geraldine Chaplin, is adapted from James Michener's Hawaiian trilogy and is the second part, telling the story of the island between the Kingdom of Hawaii - whose capital was Lahaina - till the annexation of the island in 1898 by the USA , documenting the arrival of Chinese and Japanese laborers who helped the island grow and prosper with their agricultural techniques
