The beautiful yellow robe à la française with burgundy échelle designed by James Acheson is genuinely a work of art. Laura Benson initially wore it as Emilie in the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons. Its intricate details and stunning color combination make it so memorable that it was immediately identifiable when it appeared a second time worn by Mira Sorvino as Marta in the 1994 film Barcelona.

While the Marquise gets the most eye-popping wardrobe in this movie, really all the costumes are good. I've always liked this fresh and springy-looking gown, especially with the little cap and apron. I thought at first that the pattern was of cherries (which would be, cough, thematically appropriate) or apples, but it seems to be strawberries. According to FrockFlicks, the same material was used in Marie Antoinette (2006).

Hands down my favorite Will Ferrell movie. And in honor of the season here we are 😊

Definitely a lot of product placement in this movie. Which if you don’t know is a Marketing term and how a lot of movies and tv shows make money to support their creation. We had Bob the Builder doll, Mr. Potato Head, Barbie and Etch-a-Sketch all with in the first 3 minutes of the movies. Wonder how much they paid for that 🤔

We have poor little Orphan Buddy who sees a teddy and decides to go for a late-night crawl and ends up traveling around the world and ends up back at the North Pole.

We have the wonderful Bob Newhart playing his adoptive father. When they are in class, I don’t understand why he’s in the front row. He’s so tall, he can see from the back, I’m sure.

I totally say Cotton-Headed-Ninny-Muggins in a good number of conversations. I would hate to be the Jack in the Box toy tester. Talk about ANXIETY!!!!

I wonder how much back and neck pain doing all of these scenes with having to hunch down. I like how they have some of the characters based off of the old Rudolf Claymation movie.

How is his outfit able to keep him that warm? I mean he traveled through the snow-covered mountains; you know that shits cold, and he’s got on leggings and an elf hat. It’s not free candy!!! 🤢

Meeting his father. James Caan, for the first time. Christmas Gram time! His awkward song “Guess what? I love you, I love you, I love you”

I love watching him go up the elevator 😂 "it's a Christmas Tree"

Enter the love interest, Zooey Deschanel. “Best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is to sing loud for all to hear.”

I love that Mary Steenburgen is in this movie. She is also in another one of my favorite WF movies, Step Brothers. “You can call me night hawk.” Tell me why his name tag says Wanda, but in the line up on IMDB he’s named, Gimbel’s Manager 🤔 wonder if it was a recast at the last minute?

Faizon Love is another of my favorites. But from a totally different movie. The Replacements. Probably the only football movie I like.

The gif I use the most is “You sit on a thrown of lies.” Mainly to my friend Heather 🤣 when I’m teasing her about something. Or calling her a cheater because of a card game 😂

I wonder how that candy spaghetti tasted. I half want to try it and half want to throw up 🤢

I swear he has some kind of ADD, maybe its all that sugar 🤣

There is NO WAY Mark Acheson was 26 years old at the time of this 😂 he looks like he’s at least 40 something.

Enter Peter Dinklage, “the elf” that’s too far from the North Pole for WF. I love when he climbs on the table and just attacks him 🤣

Make the Buddy sighting seem like he’s bigfoot 😂 I swear this movie ☠️

And what saves the day? None other than ZD “the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”

A Clockwork Orange (1971, dir. Stanley Kubrick) had Milena Canonero as costume designer in her first gig; the movie also was very low-budget (almost all of it was shot on location rather than in sets), so most of the costumes are off-the rack except for some of Alex's fantasy sequences where I'm sure it's reused period stock.

Canonero's Droog costumes however remains one of the most iconic costume designs in film history; the combination of underclothes, suspenders, old-fashioned hats and cricket codpieces. The asymmetrical makeup calls to mind tribal warriors but also adds a little androgyny (despite them all being vicious misogynists). The final touch is gore prosthetic decorations, such as the eyeballs on Alex's cuffs, that feel like a forerunner to punk fashion. This kind of DIY costume design was also done to excellent effect by Bobbie Mannix on The Warriors and Norma Moriceau on Mad Max 2.

There's some other nasty 'Droog' gangs too; one of the torture sequences (more harrowing cos Kubrick was being a sociopath again and had Malcolm McDowell's eyes being scratched for real) has some other Droogs in different hats, whilst Alex's nemesis 'Billyboy' (played by Richard Connaught) wears a very different kind of Droog uniform; consisting of leather overalls, military wear (especially WWII German military), and clashing colourful frilly shirts.

McDowell also gets to wear a fantastic purple suede and snakeskin jacket - prop sites say it was designed by Canonero, but the first comment on this Propstoreauction youtube video says something different 'I actually sold this coat to Malcolm around september 1970 in Kensington market in London , it is a plum suede and python trim coat designed and made by a young Yugoslavian guy and bought from our stock. the film’s costume designer had no imput. Malcolm chose it. Priced at £120 in 1970, it was the most expensive item in the market'. Interesting - given it only appears in one brief scene, it would make sense that it was bought. He also gets to wear a red and white nightgown that presumably was also off the rack.

As for the rest of the film's outfits? They all scream '1971' and were presumably off the rack. though almost all the women have had their hair dyed in garish colours. I love the red outfits worn by Sheila Raynor as Alex's mother, as well as the vinyl-lined red jumper worn by the unnamed lodger. Also the multicoloured dress worn by the psychiatrist, and the red jumpsuit worn by one of Alex's victims. Also the Milk Bar security who wear spandex unitards with studded belts, for some reason?

There's a couple of fantasy sequences that Alex indulges in, that I'm mostly including so that someone can hopefully indentify which film their costumes are from - he briefly has a fantasy of being a Roman soldier torturing Jesus, as well as being an ancient noble. Then he has one as a soldier in Old Testament battles; again, I highly doubt these were made for the film given the very low budget and the briefness of these fantasy sequences (clips from other movies were used in these fantasy sequences after all), but I did notice the helmets worn by his warriors were familiar - because they had been reused by costume designer James Acheson in the Doctor Who serial 'The Mutants' a year later!

This red gown, designed by James Acheson was first worn by Glenn Close as Marquise de Merteuil in the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons. It was spotted again on an extra in the 1993 Hocus Pocus.

April: Yellow Redux

Dangerous Liaisons / Glenn Close as the Marquise de Merteuil

Today I learned that this style of jacket is called a caraco. According to Wikipedia, the caraco was adapted from styles worn by working-class women first became fashionable for informal wear in the 1760s, which is right around the time this movie is set. So the Marquise is up to the minute in style but also comparatively dressed down--though it's amazing to think of calling this beautiful silk jacket and skirt "dressing down"!

The black accents and accessories definitely add to the effect. Note that her gloves have yellow stripes on the back, so they match the outfit. She also wears earrings of gold with black beads (probably jet).

Costumes for The Mists of Avalon (2001) were created by James Acheson and Carlo Poggioli. Jim was born in Leicester, England, and has 31 costume designer credits from a 1970 tv movie to 2015. He has three Oscars, for his work on The Last Emperor, Dangerous Liaisons, and Restoration. His entry among my best 1001 is Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.

Carlo has 40 costume designer credits from a 1992 Italian movie, to eight episodes of a 2023 series. His other notable credits include Cold Mountain, The Brothers Grimm, and Divergent.

BACKGROUND.

Eli always knew he was meant to be the high lord, even if he knew he would never get it. His father was only high lord a few years before his sudden death. He and his siblings were taken in by his father's second in command, a strong man with a wise and sweet heart. Eli grew to detest him.

When he was old enough to start acting out, he did. His temper grew shorter and he started to really take note of the world around him. He started to speak less and it started to concern a lot of people... He used to be a talkative, happy kid.

At the same time, his mother started to become depressed over the death of his father. He and his siblings tried to keep their mother happy as long as they could but the only thing she held onto was that one day, she could see his father again.

Although, as he got older - his mother started to get happier again and that was because of the new high lord, his fathers second in command.

By the time he was a teenager, the two of them had remarried and Eli's anger and resentment continued to build. He almost refused to talk to either of them for years, just as he started to plot his revenge and his first step was to take out the heir.

Growing up, he and Richard's son were the best of friends, one day he thought they would be like their fathers. When Eli realized that his friend would be the heir and not him, the young fae took matters into his own hands. It was labelled an accident, of course, Eli was devastated about it. There was a funeral and a period of mourning.

Years later, Eli took his second more important plan into action. He had worked hard to get close with the new lord, as well as reconnecting with his mother. He was the next in line, of course.

When the lord mysteriously died, Eli managed everything. He played the role of the devoted son so well and he was rewarded. The new high lord of spring was crowned.

He has always and still, keeps his siblings at an arms length but now that he has been the lord a while, things are starting to become trickier. Eli's way of ruling was harsh and he only sought out more power. He was starting to become what he always wanted, though. To him, that was the greatest reward... Even if he had no one to share it with along the way.
