A Clockwork Orange (1971, dir. Stanley Kubrick) had Milena Canonero as costume designer in her first gig; the movie also was very low-budget (almost all of it was shot on location rather than in sets), so most of the costumes are off-the rack except for some of Alex's fantasy sequences where I'm sure it's reused period stock.

Canonero's Droog costumes however remains one of the most iconic costume designs in film history; the combination of underclothes, suspenders, old-fashioned hats and cricket codpieces. The asymmetrical makeup calls to mind tribal warriors but also adds a little androgyny (despite them all being vicious misogynists). The final touch is gore prosthetic decorations, such as the eyeballs on Alex's cuffs, that feel like a forerunner to punk fashion. This kind of DIY costume design was also done to excellent effect by Bobbie Mannix on The Warriors and Norma Moriceau on Mad Max 2.

There's some other nasty 'Droog' gangs too; one of the torture sequences (more harrowing cos Kubrick was being a sociopath again and had Malcolm McDowell's eyes being scratched for real) has some other Droogs in different hats, whilst Alex's nemesis 'Billyboy' (played by Richard Connaught) wears a very different kind of Droog uniform; consisting of leather overalls, military wear (especially WWII German military), and clashing colourful frilly shirts.

McDowell also gets to wear a fantastic purple suede and snakeskin jacket - prop sites say it was designed by Canonero, but the first comment on this Propstoreauction youtube video says something different 'I actually sold this coat to Malcolm around september 1970 in Kensington market in London , it is a plum suede and python trim coat designed and made by a young Yugoslavian guy and bought from our stock. the film’s costume designer had no imput. Malcolm chose it. Priced at £120 in 1970, it was the most expensive item in the market'. Interesting - given it only appears in one brief scene, it would make sense that it was bought. He also gets to wear a red and white nightgown that presumably was also off the rack.

As for the rest of the film's outfits? They all scream '1971' and were presumably off the rack. though almost all the women have had their hair dyed in garish colours. I love the red outfits worn by Sheila Raynor as Alex's mother, as well as the vinyl-lined red jumper worn by the unnamed lodger. Also the multicoloured dress worn by the psychiatrist, and the red jumpsuit worn by one of Alex's victims. Also the Milk Bar security who wear spandex unitards with studded belts, for some reason?

There's a couple of fantasy sequences that Alex indulges in, that I'm mostly including so that someone can hopefully indentify which film their costumes are from - he briefly has a fantasy of being a Roman soldier torturing Jesus, as well as being an ancient noble. Then he has one as a soldier in Old Testament battles; again, I highly doubt these were made for the film given the very low budget and the briefness of these fantasy sequences (clips from other movies were used in these fantasy sequences after all), but I did notice the helmets worn by his warriors were familiar - because they had been reused by costume designer James Acheson in the Doctor Who serial 'The Mutants' a year later!

Downton Abbey actor to speak at AWTE Christmas lunch

Downton Abbey star Jim Carter will speak at this year’s AWTE Christmas lunch in central London.

Capacity for the event, which will raise money for Richard House Children’s Hospice, is 50% sold, according to organiser Michelle Laverick.

Carter, who played family butler Carson in the ITV series, will take to the stage at the event on December 3 at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms.

“Ticket sales are going really well,” Laverick said. “What we are finding this year is companies are booking full tables, rather than individual spots.

“It will be a star-studded event and definitely the most memorable event of the year.”

Laverick said she was “thrilled” that Attraction World would once again be sponsoring the event.

“Attraction World has always been a strong supporter of AWTE,” she added. “They have been a lot of change, so the fact they have continued with their support is excellent.”

The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince William of Wales. His titles will be Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.

THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT IS ISSUED BY THE PRESS SECRETARY TO THE QUEEN

The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince William of Wales. His titles will be Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.

Prince William thus becomes His Royal Highness The Duke of  Cambridge and Miss Catherine Middleton on marriage will become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.

DUKEDOM: Cambridge

In 1706 George Augustus (subsequently George II) the only son of George Ludwig, Elector of Hanover (subsequently George I of Great Britain) was created with other titles Duke of Cambridge.   On the accession of his father to the throne in 1714 he also became Duke of Cornwall and was created Prince of Wales.   On his own accession to the throne in 1727 the Dukedom of Cambridge merged with The Crown and ceased.

Cambridge was previously a Royal Dukedom and four sons of James, Duke of York (afterwards James II) who died in infancy were all created Duke of Cambridge.   As an Earldom Cambridge was a medieval Royal title.   Edward IV was Duke of York and Earl of Cambridge till proclaimed King of England in 1461 when his titles merged with The Crown.  

His father and grandfather both Richard Plantagenet were both Earls of Cambridge and the latter was also Duke of York.   Edmund of Langley, 5th son of Edward III and great-grandfather of Edward IV, was created Earl of Cambridge in 1362 and Duke of York in 1385.

The Dukedom of Cambridge created in 1801 became extinct on the death of the 2nd Duke of Cambridge in 1904.   Cambridge existed as a Marquessate from 1917 when it was conferred on Queen Mary’s brother till 1981 when the 2nd Marquess died and the title became extinct.

EARLDOM: Strathearn

Strathearn has had Royal connections since Robert Stewart, High Steward of Scotland, was created Earl of Strathearn in 1357.   In 1371 he succeeded his Uncle as King of Scotland becoming Robert II and the Earldom merged with The Crown Robert II created his 5th son David, Earl of Strathearn in 1371. Subsequently in 1427 the 6th son of Robert II was created Earl of Strathearn.

In 1766 George III’s younger brother Prince Henry Frederick was created Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn.   He died without issue in 1790 and in 1799 Queen Victoria’s father was created Duke of Kent and Strathearn.   These Dukedoms became extinct on his death in 1820.  Finally, Prince Arthur William Patrick Albert, 3rd son of Queen Victoria was created Duke of Connaught and Strathearn in 1874.  He died in 1942 and was succeeded by his grandson who died the following year 1943 since when Strathearn as a title has been extinct.

BARONY: Carrickfergus

An Irish Viscountcy of Chichester of Carrickfergus now held by the Marquess of Donegall was created in 1625  but Carrickfergus alone only existed as a title between 1841 and 1883.   The 3rd Marquess of Donegall was created Baron Ennishowen and Carrickfergus, of Ennishowen, co: Donegal and Carrickfergus, co: Antrim.   He died in 1883 being succeeded by his brother and the Barony became extinct.

Carrickfergus is County Antrim’s oldest town.  The word means Rock of Fergus andas an urban settlement it predates Belfast. It is on the north shore of Belfast Lough and is the site of Carrickfergus Castle which dates from circa 1180 and is one of the best preserved Castles in Ireland.

India- New Delhi

We arrived in New Delhi after a 40 hour traveling day, surprisingly not too tired even if we only slept a couple of hours. I watched a total of 7 movies during these 2 flights, sadly without popcorn :o)

Delhi is incredibly crowded (18.6 million / 2016), the polution is very high & the smog is visable. Our eyes and throat burn after being outside.

We are so thankful to be here during the winter season. The temperatures vary from 10 during the night to 21 Celisus in the afternnoon. I cannot imagine the effects of the polution at 40 deg.C along with the smells of the streets enhanced by the heat!!

Our hotel is well situated in Connaught Place, walking distance to certain sites and the metro. Our room is small but very clean with plenty of hot water.

After a good night’s sleep we decided to get our train tickets to Agra before everything would be booked on the day we wanted to leave. Sounds easy enough, eh? Well, it took all day!

As soon as you go outside a tuk-tuk driver or « good samaritan » wants to know where you are going; do you want a ride; do you need help finding something... we will help you, you are our guests here in Delhi. What they want is to bring you to their tourist office to get you to buy tours or tickets of some kind. The tuk-tuk is very cheap but they don’t bring you where you want to go - « first we stop at tourist office to help you ». And when you say no thank you we would like to walk, they follow you and try to convince you by telling you it is not safe where you are headed or the road is blocked or the place is closed. It is really intrusive to say the least.

Richard & I have found refuge in the Metros. Here no one bothers you, they are all going about their day going to work. We do get stared at because there are very little tourists who take the metro. We smile and they smile back. We also only speak french to each other and always walk on the side of the street against the traffic - this reduces the number of tuk-tuks stopping. The sad thing is, there are probably many honest workers but you have no idea who to trust.

This is the Red Fort built in 1639. It was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal dynasty for 200 years. Today this monument is home to a number of museums & gardens.

You can see the smog in this first picture- it was a sunny cloudless day.

The market where vendors sell everything from fruit to car parts.

Tomorrow we are continuing to Agra by train.
