hello , i hope you’ve had a good day! i would like to request a enhypen x m! older + taller s/o, the reader is a choreographer and so they help out their bf with memorising the dance steps as he is struggling! it can either be that the reader is the choreographer of enhypen new choreo or hes just assisting enhypen during m!reader free time
i hope it makes sense!
⋆。°✩ enhypen reaction - dancing with their choreographer bf
includes: established relationship, as always did my best to make these different from each other
a/n: thank you for requesting !! i hope you like it :)) feedback is always appreciated <33
older/taller male reader (he/him pronouns used)
requests open !! read my rules first
⋆。°✩ heeseung
(word count 191)
heeseung curses underneath his breath when he stumbles on one of the steps to their newest dance once again. you glance at him through the mirror in front of them - your way of subtly checking on him. your heart breaks a little when you notice his dejected expression and the way his lips quirk downwards into a slight frown.
“let’s take a break!” you yell out. you can hear small sighs of relief ripple throughout the room. you watch as heeseung slips out of the room before you quickly rush to join him. “hey,” you whisper. “how are you feeling?”
“i’m fine. it’s just a stupid dance anyway.”
“hee,” you sigh. you bring a hand up to cup his cheek, tilting his face up so he’s looking at you. “look, i know you’ve been struggling with the dance and you’re frustrated, but you won’t get any better by beating yourself up over it.”
heeseung lets you pull closer to press a kiss against his forehead. “we can stay late tonight and keep working on it, okay?”
“okay,” he nods. he wraps his arms around your waist, leaning against you. “thank you.”
⋆。°✩ jay
(word count 199)
“jay?” you furrow your eyebrows as you push the door to the dance studio open. the familiar sound of shoes scuffing against the polished floor and heavy bass greet you.
jay stands in the middle of the room in front of the mirrors. he pants as the song comes to an end. sweat sticks his shirt against his skin and makes his hair look damp. “hyung,” he sighs. you kneel down beside his phone, momentarily pausing his playlist before setting your bag down on the ground beside his.
“what are you doing here so late?”
“i can’t remember the new choreography,” he sighs. “i came back to practice but… i must’ve lost track of time. sorry.”
“no, it’s okay.” he remains silent as you join him in the center of the room, though you don’t miss the way his lips quirk upwards into a grateful smile. “do you want help?”
“help would be nice,” he nods.
you smile as you lean in to press a kiss against his cheek. his face flushes slightly at the action, though neither of you comment on it. you stifle a prideful smile, turning back to the mirror. “where do you want to start?”
⋆。°✩ jake
(word count 168)
you stifle a chuckle under your breath when you notice jake’s slight glare as your hand ghosts against heeseung’s back. he repeats the motion with your corrections once again, seemingly unaware of your boyfriend’s growing annoyance. “like this?”
“that’s perfect,” you nod.
“hyung,” jake calls, momentarily interrupting your teaching. “can you help me too? i think i’m doing it wrong.”
you playfully roll your eyes as jay chuckles from beside him. you stand behind him, firmly holding his hips as you repeat the same process of demonstrating the movements and then supervising his attempts.
his cheeks flush a light pink despite his previous confidence. you lean in closer so you’re right next to his ear, watching as his blush only continues to deepen. “you’re doing it perfectly.”
“alright, enough flirting,” jungwon calls.
“i thought we agreed you would leave the sappy stuff at home,” jay agrees.
“sorry,” you laugh as you step back, waving off their teasing with a shake of your head. “let’s get back to it.”
⋆。°✩ sunghoon
(word count 154)
your hands are gentle as they ghost against sunghoon’s waist to angle his body to the side. “here,” you murmur, demonstrating the move once again. “like this.”
“ah okay,” he nods. your gaze remains fixated on his footwork in the mirror as he repeats the steps once again, this time correctly completing the moves. “how was that?”
“that was perfect,” you smile.
“thank you again for helping me,” sunghoon chuckles. “i don’t know what i would do without you.”
you nonchalantly wave him off with a shake of your head. you wrap your arms around his waist from behind, leaning down to press a kiss against his cheek. “i don’t know why you worry so much about your dancing. you’re incredible, hoon.”
sunghoon’s cheeks flush a light pink as he twists around to face you. he leans up to pull you into a sweet kiss quickly before pulling away. “it’s all because of you.”
⋆。°✩ sunoo
(word count 182)
sunoo’s eyes remain fixated on you as you slowly demonstrate the choreography. your movements are simple as you mark each step of the dance, explaining each part as you continue.
“does that make sense?” you ask as you finish. through the mirror you can see sunoo’s eyes still fixated on you, though he doesn’t react to the question. you furrow your eyebrows when he remains silent in response. “sunoo?” he flinches back slightly when you wave a hand in front of his face to catch his attention.
“huh?”
“are you paying attention?” you chuckle.
“sorry,” he whispers. his ears light up a light pink in embarrassment as he refocuses his attention on your words. “what were you saying?”
you walk around behind him, wrapping your arms around his waist. you lean down, resting your chin against his shoulder. “am i really that boring?” you tease.
“no, not at all! i’m sorry, you’re just… distracting.”
you raise an eyebrow as you lean in even closer to him. “distracting?”
he turns around to face you, pulling you down into a kiss. “distracting,” he repeats.
⋆。°✩ jungwon
(word count 154) he's so cute dksldns
your chest heaves as you hold your ending position for a few seconds, staring at yourself in the large mirror before you. sweat makes your shirt stick to your skin - an unfortunate side effect of spending hours dancing for a living.
you startle when a familiar pair of arms wraps around your waist. the unseen figure pulls you back against his chest, leaning his forehead down in between your shoulder blades. in the mirror, you can just barely make out jungwon behind you.
“hyung,” he murmurs. “it’s late. why are you still here?”
“sorry,” you whisper. you twist around to face him, pulling him into a hug. “i lost track of time.” jungwon blinks up at you with tired eyes. you smile, leaning down to pull him into a sweet kiss. “tired?”
he hums. “i wanna go home.”
“okay,” you whisper. you lean down to press a kiss against his forehead. “let’s go home.”
⋆。°✩ niki
idol!reader (word count 174)
you raise an eyebrow as niki tugs you along after him towards the studio. you stifle a chuckle as he eagerly shuts the door behind you before flipping the switch on the wall, illuminating the room. “you brought me back to work for our date?”
“i brought you here to dance with me,” he replies. he holds his hands out, gesturing for you to join him in the center of the room. “come here.”
you can’t help the small laugh that escapes you as you walk over to join him. niki rushes over to the corner of the room to connect his phone to the speakers before pressing play on a familiar playlist. the first few notes of your newest song play as he runs back to your side. “are we improvising?” you chuckle.
“you choreographed the dance,” niki smiles. “so, teach me.”
“you’re a very eager student,” you tease.
“only for you,” niki replies. he leans up you pull you into a kiss before refocusing on the mirror. “so, what’s the first move?”

I may or may not have made an entire AU surrounding Morro and a resurrection/redemption arc because let's be real Ninjago fans, Morro deserves it. The writers did him so fucking dirty.
I will eventually maybe be writing a fanfiction about this, but if anyone wants the rundown of my AU - most of the events pre-season 5 don't change, just get strung together a little better to make the plot flow more coherently. (Ie, the Ninja feeling creeped out in the Caves of Despair - the place where Morro died initially.)
Resurrection: It is around Day of the Departed when he is resurrected, though the Ninja don't find out he's alive until I want to say season 7. The Ninja think they see him in the distance but brush it off. There's no way, pfft, Morro is dead. The Cursed Realm is gone. Right? WRONG.
Redemption: While trying to figure out stuff about Krux and Acronix, not only do the Ninja find out that Morro has been alive, but that Morro has spent his new life living it the way he would have if Wu had never found him. He has a job and an apartment, he doesn't want to be a ninja. After everything Wu put him through... he just wants to be happy. He wants to live the life he never got to live. He doesn't care about being the Green Ninja anymore.
UNFORTUNATELY, the Ninja need as much help as they can to take down Krux and Acronix and are forced to try and get Morro's help. While there is a very VERY rocky start between the Ninja and Morro, they will eventually grow to trust them (Cole takes the longest surprisingly. It isn't until season 8/9 that he BEGINS to trust Morro)
Bass?: "But Tri where does this bass thing come from?"
Oh yeah either in Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu or VERY early Prime Empire - Jay and Cole accidentally introduce Morro to music and musical instruments. Morro falls in love with playing the bass and by the time of mid-Prime Empire, he's damn well near a pro at it to the point I already have a minigame planned for Morro to show off his skills with.
Souta?: It means "Sudden, sound of the wind" and "thick, big, great". It's a Japanese surname. Morro gave it to himself because he felt weird about the fact that everyone had surnames but himself. (And also he probably needed one for his job.)
Ghost Blade?: He may not be dead anymore, but because he WAS dead for so long, a lot of his energy is still connected to being dead, so bam. He can manifest a PHYSICAL ghost weapon. Might be a little OP, I don't care.
Also explains his gi, there are some changes to it BUT he remains very attached to his dead gi design + all gi designs I come up with for the different seasons will be based on his Possession gi. (the ninjargon letter M where his weird animal brooch used to be (which he wears on his shawl instead) pants/sleeves cutting off halfway down his calves/arms!)
Lloyd: Morro and Lloyd grow to see each other as brothers. Morro, having been in Lloyd's body and mind has a deeper understanding of him than anyone else could. Morro becomes VERY protective over Lloyd and due to this his relationship with Kai is one of the first ones he forms. Morro hates Wu and Misako (and S8+ Garmadon) for the way they've treated this boy. Morro isn't afraid to argue with Wu on certain things regarding Lloyd. Morro becomes the big brother to Lloyd whom he always wanted in his own life.
Islands, Seabound, and Crystallized: Oh boy, this will be fun because technically all three of these COULD have been connected to Morro (Islands and Seabound DEF were and Crystallized SHOULD HAVE BEEN). Anyways, I kill off Morro at some point in either Master of the Mountain (which I would LOVE to do the most because Cole at this point is one of the closest Ninja to Morro and it would HURT HIM SO FUCKING BAD, and be more of a driving force for his character arc), Islands, or Seabound to make it easy on myself plot-wise BUT he gets resurrected by Harumi in Crystallized because this dumb bitch thinks that just because he used to be a villain means she can convince him to become a villain again. Morro becomes a double spy.
Euphrasia?: Her element in the show is white. Morro's is green. She's not the new Elemental Master of Wind, she's the fucking Elemental Master of AIR and I will stick by that. Even canonically, I refuse to acknowledge it. If I get far enough as writing for Dragons Rising, I will definitely give Euphrasia and Morro a sibling dynamic.
Anyways! Yeah! This is but a preview of what my Resdemption-AU has to offer. If anyone wants to hear more about it, I could talk about it for FUCKING hours.
Oh!!! And I want to give credit to @sunfloraas because I took A LOT of inspiration from her Morro design because it's that good!!!

100 Albums To Understand Muse - Part 8 [STYLE Series #004 - Muse (August 2010)]
MEW
Frengers
(2003)
World debut of the Danish band, boasting melancholic melodies, the transparent high tone voice of Jonas Biele and guitars that, like Muse, grew up on The Smashing Pumpkins and the Pixies. Their latest release, 'No More Stories…….' succeeds in building a dynamic world with a more progressive experimental spirit. -S
MILES DAVIS
Pangaea
(1975)
A masterpiece of the so-called ‘electric period’ of the 1970s. If you think it's ‘jazz’, you'll be surprised. Basically, the cool and sophisticated worldview of this album is the opposite of that of the passionate Muse, but I think there are similarities in the ‘once in a lifetime’ energy that pervades the band's live performances. -M
MONIQUE HAAS
Debussy : Suite Bergamasque / Deux Arabesques / Children's Corner
(1995)
Debussy is a composer that all piano players have a keen interest in. The images that emerge from his poetic melodies are simple, yet they have an impressionistic intensity that leaves a strong impression on the listener's heart. He is also one of Matthew's favourite composers. Enjoy the limpid sound with no ill effects. -M
MY BLOODY VALENTINE
Loveless
(1991)
The second album from MBV, led by roaring guitar master Kevin Shields, and a milestone in shoegaze, still influencing everything from acoustic to neo-shoegaze. Whispering vocals float gently between walls of dissonant, layered guitar noise. It will leave the listener in a trance and lead them into a dreamlike world. -I
MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE
The Black Parade
(2006)
US alternative punk band that recognises a variety of influences from Queen to punk. The band made their breakthrough in Japan with this album. Muse toured the US with this album in 2007 as a frontliner. When Muse took the stage at Wembley Stadium in the UK a few months later, they fronted the band in return. -H
NED'S ATOMIC DUSTBIN
God Fodder
(1991)
A prime example of the ‘gleeful rock’ that dominated the UK indie scene in the early 90s. The first album, featuring snarling twin basses, blistering fuzz guitars, danceable driving beats and sweet and sour melodies, was a #4 hit in the UK. In their heyday, the three Muse members were in secondary school and Matthew's first gig was with the Neds. -I
NEW ORDER
Low-Life
(1985)
Formed by the remaining members of Joy Division after Ian Curtis (vo) committed suicide. The band's melodious bass was a distinctive feature, and it swallowed techno, disco and later house, and used synths extensively. The killer 80s synth-pop tune 2 shines with its piercing uppercut. -I
NINA SIMONE
I Put A Spell On You
(1965)
A classic album from the Philips era by a singer-songwriter who transcended genres such as jazz-blues and R&B. Muse covered ‘Feeling Good’, a standard that has been taken up by many different faces, but Matthew was introduced to it by Nina's version. The title track featuring Screaming Jay Hawkins is also full of atmosphere. -S

a/n | i'm in love with jay, also this is not proof-read, i'm sorry
------------------
The muffled sounds of music blaring from the club accompany you and Jay on the dimly lit streets. You only started enjoying yourself in there, moving your body to the rhythm between the sweaty bodies of the club attendees around you.
But at this moment, you are standing outside with this young man known as your closest friend, your ears are ringing a little and you feel a little light-headed. Jay holds onto your arms so as to steady your slightly wobbly form and you whine.
“The party only begun like,” You flick your head to the side to get some hair out of your face. “This second.”
“No, it ended just now.” Jay sighs, used to this. “You’ve already had too much.”
“I’m not even drunk.” You whine, tugging Jay with you towards the source of deep bass thumping. “C’mon, Jay, you’re no fun.”
“I’m really just trying to keep you safe here.” Jay’s grasp on you stays firm, but gentle. The skin is warm on your arms where this fingers are holding onto you.
“If you’re so worried, why did you agree to coming here in the first place…”
Jay pretends to think for a second, but he knows the answer already.
He wasn’t able to resist your pleading. He never was, not even at the start of your friendship, but as he started feeling closer to you, then attracted, your effect on him only grew tenfold.
Obviously, Jay did not plan on falling for you – someone he felt might be unattainable and his complete opposite in personality, but alas, no one had the ability to choose who their heart yearns for.
So he is stuck in the friendzone, a place where he put himself in the first place. He tries to pass it off as him being a protective friend, but really, it’s obvious to all his friends that he has feelings for you.
“Mmh. I know now.” A lopsided smile makes its way onto your face as you finally straighten up from your hunched-over position.
You lean dangerously close to Jay’s parted lips and you whisper.
“You’re into me.”
A moment of silence passes. Jay’s breath is caught in his throat. He feels as if the world has stopped around him, leaving him and you in this very place in time forever. The noises from the club, the chatter of a few people walking by, the howling of a dog from afar, everything seems to be muted.
Jay looks at you, really looks. Your eyes are sparkling at him, the dim, warm tones of the streetlamps around illuminate your face and he thinks he’s wouldn’t want to be anywhere else right now.
You start laughing a second after, moving away from his face, as if you’ve just told the best joke of year or the century, even.
“’M just kidding.” You sigh, almost as if you’re disappointed by his lack of response. “I know you don’t like me like that.”
“And who told you that?” Jay finds his voice again, moving his hands so that he’s holding onto your wrists now, softer than before.
“Huh? I thought- I know you see me as a friend.”
“How are you so sure?” It’s Jay’s turn to crowd into your space now, leaning closer, meeting your confused gaze with determined eyes.
You don’t have a reply to that.
If you hadn’t sobered up until now, Jay’s warm palm sliding up your arm and only stopping to rest on your cheek would have removed any effect the alcohol had on you.
Jay darts his eyes around your face, searching for a sign that you wanted him to stop and move as far away from you as possible, but he only finds an amused glint to your stare.
Still, you’re the one who makes the final move to close the space between your bodies. You press your chest to Jay’s and your lips to his plump ones. Your hands find their way to the nape of his neck, caressing the hair growing there.
The kiss doesn’t last long by any means, but mere minutes feel like hours with Jay pulling you impossibly closer to him, as if he was trying to touch every part of you at once.
You two part after a while, just staring at each other in dazed silence.
“I guess you really are into me.” You smile with adoration.
“As you are into me.” Jay mimics your expression, but doesn’t let you say anything else as he leans in to kiss you again, as long as you’ll let him.

‘Liberation’ is the third solo LP from composer, arranger, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Sly5thAve. Layered with orchestral arrangements, jazz improvisation and Hip-Hop production, ‘Liberation’ is an accomplished record of courage, musical conviction, and growth.
Known for his sophisticated compositions, Sylvester Uzoma Onyejiaka II AKA Sly5thAve’s first experiences with large scale arranging were with the Club Casa Chamber Orchestra and recording instrumental covers of popular modern songs. Notably, his orchestral tribute to Dr. Dre, ‘The Invisible Man,’ garnered widespread praise and attention, even earning the admiration of Dr. Dre himself. Through these recordings Sly5thAve felt he had found a way to make people connect with orchestral music; “I’ve long felt orchestras around the world are inaccessible to most people – whether it be the programming or the cost, or the location”.
The LP is Sly5thAve’s first full album of original orchestral arrangements and features the musicianship of Sly5thAve’s collaborators and Ghost Note bandmates - headed by Snarky Puppy's multi-Grammy–winning percussion duo Robert “Sput” Searight and Nate Werth, alongside previous collaborator Roberto Verástegui.

"Feel my heartbeat."
manny accidentally flirting with pope my beloved<3
+
"That was insane! You guys are insane!" Manny exclaimed. "I thought he was gonna kill us!"
"Yeah, that was crazy," John B agreed.
"That was literally crazy! I can't believe you hit him with the door, Sarah!"
Sarah met his eyes and sent him a forced smile.
"Perrito, cállate, por favor," Edgar breathed from the back. Manny didn't know a lot of Spanish, but they knew what shut up meant.
"Sorry," they said. Edgar waved the apology off.
Manny felt like a thousand wasps were flying around in his body, waiting for the chance to burst from his skin. He'd never been in a situation like that before, with guns and violence.
"God, that was insane," they muttered under their breath.
"Manny, for the love of God, stop talking," Kie snapped. "You're rambling shit is usually cute, but you gotta read the room, dude."
"Don't call 'em dude," Edgar said, voice unusually stern.
Kie scoffed. "I didn't mean it like—"
They began to bicker, but Manny's attention was stolen by someone's hand on his arm. He turned, and was face to face with Pope.
"That was crazy," he said, voice hushed.
Manny's entire body lit up with his words. "I know. Feel my heartbeat."
They grabbed his hand, pressing it to their chest. Their heart was still racing, like the bass of a techno song from 2008.
Pope's face fell, and he froze, looking at their overlapped hands. It was as if he was a rebooting computer. After a long moment, he cleared his throat, nodding too fast and too hard. "Yeah, uh, it is really fast." He pulled his hand away, making Manny frown.
"Was that.. Did I make you uncomfortable? I'm sorry," he said.
Pope shook his head. "No! No, it was.. It's okay. 'M not uncomfortable."
Manny but the inside of his cheek. "You sure?"
Whatever Pope was about to say was cut off by Edgar calling up to JJ in the driver's seat as the Twinkie pulled into a place Manny didn't recognize. "Why are we here, Jay?"

Fine. The Furry Roster, part 1 of however many parts it takes:
All the Gordons are cephalopods. Reasoning: Freeman's deep sea thing + Swap's tentacles + Doc is strange and bizarre + Freeman compares Loverboy to a cuttlefish in Act 1 + Literal Actual Octopus "Gordon".
Freeman/Storyteller: Architeuthis/Giant Squid
Swap/Overlord: Vampire Squid (they're really weird AND the vampire thing)
Doc/Hypnos: Firefly Squid (those fuckers GLOW)
Player/Power Trip: Blue-Ringed Octopus (chill but also dangerous)
Gordon B/Leading Light: Cuttlefish
Seven/Last Resort Gordon: Giant Pacific Octopus
Worldstop crew:
Malcom Challender: Unicorn (something something his ability to manipulate Source seemed magical to the AI? Really it's just because our Malcom fictive has a ponysona but no actual fursona)
Darnold: Pitbull (seen as aggressive but tend to be sweethearts; very loyal)
Benrey/"Forzen": Blue dragon sea slug / garden snail (Benrey is a slug, but his Forzen disguise is quite literally him retreating into his shell)
Y2KVR crew:
Benrey (also Loveletters Benrey): Heterometris spinifer/Giant blue scorpion (for obvious reasons + they're blue)
Spork (also Valentine): African Gray Parrot (They're smart as FUCK)
Coomer/Lovetap: Mantis shrimp
Bubby/Dr. Feelgood: Fire salamander
Forzen/DJ Heartbeat: Mongolian death worm (this is not a real animal, however, they are supposedly attracted by rhythmic thumping similar to a heavy bass beat)
Darnold/Smooth Operator: Cinnabar chanterelle (yes, the mushroom. Consider the emails to be similar to the mycelial network. I know this is getting weird. It will get weirder.)
Tommy/I Don't Remember His Lovecore Name: Common crow
The Restrictor: Raven (Half-Life G-Man is associated with ravens sometimes)
More will come soon.
"blackmailbutler asked:
Furry Roster Part 2 Of Something:
Admins:
Admin C: Tri-color Monitor Lizard
G-Man: Komodo Dragon
Da Boss: Blue Poison Dart Frog
Admin F: Blue jay (Like a blue jay, most of his aggression is a bluff; he's loud and abrasive, but doesn't actually want to fight)
Admin P: Praying Mantis (green and can sort of punch things)
Admin Darnold (he is mentioned one time in Act 1): Clownfish (orange + Darnold is mentioned to have been taking care of Joshua, which made us think of Finding Nemo because of the whole parental figure thing? Mostly going on vibes because we know nothing of him.)
Mad Science Team:
Sleepless: Canada Goose (Acts like an asshole most of the time + Canada + probably loud as fuck)
Harold: Protogen (it's MY furry AU and *I* get to choose the species. AND Protogens are COOL)
Electrobubby: Electric eel (duh)
Politerey: Duck (mostly because we are a Benrey and Forzen siblings truther)
Project Coolatta: Lace Monitor Lizard
The Old Man: Lace Monitor Lizard (they're monitors to call back to a certain other father-son duo, but unlike GVRV and C, they're the same species to represent them NOT being estranged)
Merch Team/The Last Resort:
The Party Pontiff: Mantis shrimp
Wheels: Okay so you know how people make anthro planes? That but a Greyhound bus. Yes he still drives an actual bus. I told you last ask that it'd get weirder!
Tommy Bahama: Marine iguana (He does the beach tour IIRC. Plus I wanted him to be a lizard like some of the other Tommies.)
Dr. Perky: Golden orbweaver (laser grid = spiderwebs, plus golden/orange color scheme)
The Bellhop: Tropical leatherleaf slug (Vibes only. Plus he can retract one of his eyestalks to fit the one-eyed thing.)
???:
Barney Calhoun: Harbor Seal
Alyx Vance: Leopard/Deer (based on our pre-existing furry!Alyx. Eli is a deer, and she wears a little headband with some of his shed antlers on it.)
Capital M: Changeling (think MLP. What do you mean that's just the ponysona that I got assigned by the system. I don't know what you're talking about.)"
----

Chimes of Freedom
Three years ago I did an oral history of Orbital's "Chime" for MOJO. This is it...
Paul Hartnoll: From the age of 13 I was in school bands and local bands in Sevenoaks, usually playing guitar. Then when I was 16 and my brother was 20, about ‘84, ‘85, we started getting drum machines and what have you together. We were listening to electro, hi-NRG, Tackhead, Cabaret Voltaire, Chakk, Severed Heads. We’d turn up at local discos with a Front-242 or Dead Or Alive record, or a bunch of electro 12”s, and pester the DJ to play them. Then, when house came along in ‘86, ‘87 – the stuff like (The House Master Boyz’) House Nation and (Nitro Deluxe’s) This Brutal House - we immediately thought, Great! This is like electro and hi-NRG together!
Phil Hartnoll: I was doing an apprenticeship, so I had a bit of money, and any spare cash I’d spend on synths. I never had aspiration, I just wanted to know what synthesiser sounds were. Paul was much more driven, he wanted to be in a band. We gradually got tapes together, we’d give them to a few people, then Paul found this guy Jazzy M.
Jazzy M: My show was called The Jacking Zone, and it was the first ever proper house show on London airwaves. The stuff was already coming in from Chicago, but I wanted to hear if people could make it here in the UK - so on my radio show, I asked, Are you making music? Come and bring it to me!, bold as brass. So (Paul’s pirate DJ friend-of-a-friend) Jack Man Jay brought me this tape. It’s wondrous to think back that I had no other information but ‘Paul from Kent.’
Paul: I went up to see Jazzy in this record shop in Croydon, My Price I think; it was quite terrifying, really, because he was like a John the Baptist of house music, such an evangelist, a real character. He ran around the shop collecting all these 12”s, then went, ‘What you do is brilliant, but it’s too fast, and you need to copy these records.’ I said, I haven't got any money. He just looked at me like this was an abstract concept, and went, ‘Money? Nah, you can have them. Copy those, come back when you need some more.’ He became my mentor right up to the time when I finally gave him Chime.
Phil: The way Paul wrote Chime was very impulsive and instinctive, that non-thinking-about-it creative vibe is really captured there. Normally he’s much more the musician, the nerdy one who’ll sit down and work things out, where I’m just a Tasmanian devil - Wurrrrgh, press that, what’s this do? - so actually it was funny for him to do such an unconscious, unconsidered kind of track.
Paul: I was just trying out a way of recording where I did it all live to the four-track, without worrying about mucking about and syncing different tracks. I started about four in the afternoon, I think it was a Wednesday, a couple of hours before I went to the pub. I guess I was trying to do something a bit Detroit techno, but really, I just took some random samples from my dad’s easy listening records, put in the ‘dum dum dum du-du-dum’ bass at the beginning, job done. Right at the end I thought, What’s that weird sound? and it was the descending string bit. Sounds OK, I’ll put that in… and that was literally it.
Phil: His mates were sitting on the sofa hassling him to finish it as he did the live recording to tape! I’ll be honest, Chime never floated my boat massively because that sort of Salsa-ey rhythm didn’t really sit right with me, but I realised it really stuck out as quirky and weird, which is why it worked for us and helped as break through. And it really did go mad.
JM: He brought it into me at Vinyl Zone at the weekend, the shop was packed with DJs, I put the tape on and the whole place went spare – ‘I want it! I want it!’, thinking it was a new 12”. I was really cheeky, like, Ha ha, no you can’t have it, it’s not released! Right that minute, I went, I’m having this. I’d been working on setting up the Oh’Zone label so it felt like perfect timing, spiritual almost.
Paul: Jazzy told me to go home and re-record it, but with an extra bit at the end where it all comes back in – ‘and do it on a metal tape as well.’ I spent £3.25 on a cassette to record it on, the most expensive one I’d ever bought, and I was thinking, It’d better bloody be worth it.
JM: I’ve still got that tape, it’s a TDK MA90 with just ‘CHIME’ written on it. The brilliant thing is, that’s what we mastered the vinyl off - 12, 13 minutes whatever it is, no edits, nothing, just straight on to the Oh’Zone 12" (released in December 1989). And that was my label launched! 1,000 copies, then another 3,000, it kept getting bigger. I even played it out off the cassette too, before the vinyl. I remember it was Clink Street or one of those really grubby underground raves. The whole place went absolutely crackers. Johnny Walker was DJing there too, he worked at Polydor which was in the same building as Tong - so that’s how he got to know about it.
Pete Tong: Soon as I heard it, I had to sign it. I did the deal with Jazzy on the track, then rolled it into a bigger deal with the boys - because I knew I wanted a longer-term thing for them with (London records dance imprint) FFRR. It was a bit of a seminal moment for British homegrown electronic music; before them we had DJs going into studios with the help of engineers – S’Express, Bomb The Bass, M/A/R/R/S - learning how to make records cut-and-paste style. Then the next big wave was the talent doing everything themselves: The Prodigy, Underworld, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. And Orbital really set the tone for that.
Helen Mead: My first thought on getting the record was, Wait, this isn’t The Orb! And second - and this is how trendy everything had become - I thought, Oh they’re supposed to be named after orbital raves? God that’s so over. But with their live shows, they started something else. At the time I had such a battle to make people realise that there could be any link between dance music and live music, whereas I knew they interlinked.
Paul: We’d only played one show before, as The Hartnoll Brothers, amazingly supporting a local Kent go-go band. But a friend of ours (Johnny Delafons) drummed for the Shamen, and we ended up meeting them (Orbital played their first gig supporting The Shamen at the Islington Town & Country Club 2, February 1990)
Mixmaster Morris: Doing the Synergy tour with The Shamen was their first proper live gig. I took them out to buy sequencers to make it easier to do the live sets, and the first time I ever heard them play was their first soundcheck. Everything was moving so fast in 1990, and I’ll always associate Chime with that. It was in the charts as we were touring, so it just got more and more popular, everyone got more and more crazy. The Shamen weren’t in the charts at that point, they didn’t have a hit ‘til 91, so Orbital got bigger than everyone else on the tour. They were still only getting £10-15 a night like the rest of us, mind.
Phil: When we did Chime on Top of the Pops (on March 22, 1990), we were a square peg in a round hole. We were so awkward standing there trying to mime - we thought we were being all clever having everything unplugged. Ugh, it was pretty painful. We had a big argument with them asking why we couldn’t play live, but at the end of the day you can’t refuse Top of the Pops! Then of course we had Snap! on afterwards doing, “I Got The Power!” and they just showed us up even more.
Paul: Between us, 808 State, The Shamen and their mates, it really felt like the beginning of something, of people deciding they didn’t like the old nightclub regime and wanted something new. From there we got involved with (crusty tribal rave promoters) the Megadog lot. It was very word of mouth, it was really about being evangelical for this culture. Very different to all the Sunrise and Energy raves which we’d play - they were run by blaggers who were only in it for the money, and they would run things very shoddily.
PT: They were very much in tune with the free parties, the traveller mentality, the DIY mentality. And they presented themselves as a band from the start. Them, The Shamen, The KLF, I think they showed the way. To this day, I tell producers starting out, If you want to be seen as a band, you’ve got to act like it, not just another DJ making a record.
Phil: Playing it live was where the magic came in for me. It was so simple, just a few samples, the 303 - which was my little baby to mess around with - and couple of other analogue synths, it was really easy to jam it out. You can hear how much we’d go off on one with it on Son Of Chime (released on the Live At The Brain album, 1990). Sometime around this we went up to Liverpool, that guy James Barton who started Cream asked us to do a private do for him and his mates, about 100 people. As soon as we’d played it, they’d go, Play Chime again, play Chime again! We must’ve played it for half an hour, maybe more.
MM: They played Synergy shows all through 1990, and we were doing underground parties at the same time - the whole point of those was to do an all-night party with no DJs, only live electronic music. A classic one was at a rehearsal studio in Willesden - maybe 1,000, 1,500 people, well overcrowded - which kickstarted (touring Megadog rave event) the MIDI Circus and was a precursor to Experimental Sound Field in Glastonbury in 1992, where Underworld, Orbital and everyone played for the whole weekend.
HM: It was probably 1993 before people realised how big this whole scene had become: that’s when you had Aphex Twin, Sabres of Paradise, Leftfield, all coming through. So Chime was big, but I don’t think anyone knew how big it was all about to get.
Paul: I could never get sick of hearing Chime. Aside from just being proud of it, it’s given me my entire life of doing music. How could I ever not get a thrill from that?

Milton Nascimento & esperanza spalding discuss their new album 'Milton + esperanza'
Premiered Aug 8, 2024 #esperanzaspalding#MiltonNascimento#Milton_esperanza
Watch the short film featuring Milton Nascimento & esperanza spalding, as they discuss their new album 'Milton + esperanza', out now.
“It’s like a magic, that you know when it’s happening, and you can help make it happen. It’s like you can invite it to come visit you. You can invite it to come through you. And it’s magic, that I guess, I’m always hoping will descend, you know, into the music. The whole time I was always praying for the album to feel like a big ship, that’s traveling through the cosmic waters of the world. And the ship is going so smooth, and you’re [Milton] standing at the back going like this, “Wa, wa.” Like throwing magic out from your hands to everybody who’s seen the boat go by. And I wanted the album to feel like that, to feel like this magical wow-thing going by; and after it passes, you just feel like wow. That was the inspiration for the album.” – esperanza spalding
