Non parce que je viens de finir d'une traite le tout nouveau Adamsberg, Sur La Dalle, et j'ai vraiment envie de parler de notre commissaire, de Louis, Violette, toute la bande, de cette nouvelle enquête tarabiscotée et brillante...

No, cuz, I just finished binge-reading the whole new Adamsberg, and I really want to talk about our police chief, Louis, Violette, and the whole Brigade, and this new convoluted and brilliant investigation...

Et aussi demander à la populace pourquoi il n'y a pas plus de fic Adamsberg/Veyrenc. Je suis sérieuse, 2 fics seulement sur AO3, j'ai recherché sur le web et rien d'autre, alors que le potentiel de ce ship, s'il-vous-plaît !

And also wanna ask the crowd why there's not more Adamsberg/Veyrenc works! Seriously, only 2 fics on AO3, and I went searching on the web, nothing more, even though this ship has so much potential!

Et d'ailleurs pour ceux qui ont lu Sur la dalle [I don't think it has been translated in English yet, so I'm not translating this part, but if you're interested in my thoughts on Adamsberg/Veyrenc, send me an ask] , on en parle, de l'immense naturel de Jean-Baptiste pour admirer paisiblement ses collègues hommes ? Comme dans chaque bouquin depuis son arrivée, pas mal de passages sur la beauté de Veyrenc (Jean-Bapt ton crush is showing), et là, le nombre de réflexions qu'il se fait sur le commissaire Matthieu... De l'autre côté, le Matthieu en question est en pâmoison devant Adamsberg aussi, faut le dire. C'était fascinant.

Et dans ce dernier volume, pas de spoilers, mais le seul perso qui soit systématiquement sur la même longueur d'ondes que Adamsberg est Veyrenc. Il n'y a pas un seul moment où il est dubitatif, ou critique, non, au contraire. Ils n'ont définitivement pas assez de "scènes" rien qu'eux deux, mais chacune de leurs conversations en solo ou de leurs interactions devant le reste des personnages les présentent comme étant totalement synchronisés et évoquent leur très longue histoire commune. J'aurais tellement aimé que Vargas nous donne plus d'interactions entre eux deux. Il y a deux passages en particulier qui m'ont rendu folle, le passage du taureau et le passage du "film d'Adamsberg", ceux qui ont lu le livre sauront de quoi je parle.

Bref. Six ans d'attente avant le prochain tome de nouveau ? Je sens que je vais craquer et finir par écrire mes propres "chapitres manquants"... Alleeeez les gars, qu'on remplisse ce tag un peu, à vos stylos et vos claviers ! Je suis sûre que beaucoup d'entre vous peuvent être inspirés.

Anyway. Six more years before the next book again? I feel like I'm going to snap and end up writing my own missing scenes... C'mon guys, let's fill up that tag! I'm sure so many of you could be super inspired.

An intellectually nonconformist friar investigates a series of mysterious deaths in an isolated abbey.

It's not subtle, good and evil are clearly marked. The location is a plus.

It's hard not to think of Sherlock Holmes when listening to wise-cracking Connery. I think at one point he even uses the word "elementary". It's entertaining, but it also feels a little out of place compared with the rest of the film.

Who stood out for me was Ron Perlman. He gave a surprising performance.

I liked the conclusion that it's important to be able to laugh at the powerful. You have to mock and ridicule them.

THE NAME OF THE ROSE (1986): Long, disappointingly unfocused, frequently unappetizing adaptation of the Umberto Eco novel, starring Sean Connery as the impishly named Brother William of Baskerville, a highly intellectual Franciscan monk of the 13th century who visits a Benedictine monastery with his young novice Adso (Christian Slater), hoping to find a mundane explanation for a series of mysterious deaths before the Church sends in an inquisitor (F. Murray Abraham) to look for demonic scapegoats.

It starts off well, but it loses focus on the mystery with an extended late second-act shift into the evils of the Inquisition and schisms in the Church, which so derails the plot that the movie never recovers, rendering the eventual solution to the mystery something of a damp squib. Connery is marvelous — he makes William's powers of ratiocination entirely convincing, and his avuncular mentor relationship with Adso (which I have a feeling George Lucas watched with attention in writing the STAR WARS prequels) is appealing — but the still-gawky teenage Slater is terrible, the only significant female character (a horny peasant girl played by Valentina Vargas) never gets a name and has hardly any dialogue, and almost every character other than William and Adso is presented as a kind of Tod Browning grotesque — in particular a young and very hammy Ron Perlman as a mentally challenged hunchback named Salvatore who speaks in a weird pidgin of different languages. After a while, I found it increasingly hard to take, and the ending was unrewarding. CONTAINS LESBIANS? The characters are aware that gay people exist, but no. VERDICT: Almost worth it just for Connery, but by about the 90-minute mark, it feels like he's trying to hold back the tide.

La télévision du café retransmettait un match de football bruyant. Le commissaire regarda un moment les hommes qui couraient en tous sens sur le gazon, dont les mouvements étaient passionnément suivis par les clients qui mangeaient tête levée vers l’écran. Adamsberg n’avait jamais compris cette affaire de match. Si cela plaisait à des gars de lancer un ballon dans un but, ce qu’il pouvait très bien comprendre, à quoi bon installer tout exprès une autre bande de gars en face pour vous empêcher de lancer ce ballon dans le but ? Comme s’il n’existait pas, à l’état naturel, assez de gars sur terre qui vous empêchaient sans cesse de lancer vos ballons où cela vous chantait.
